Afghanistan
Suicide car bomber kills 11 police, soldiers in Afghanistan
[DAWN] A suicide boom-mobileer killed at least 11 members of the security forces and maimed more than 20 civilians near a police checkpoint in eastern Pashtun-infested Logar province in Afghanistan on Saturday, local officials said.

The Taliban did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack and could not be reached for comment, but the holy warrior group carry out daily attacks on the country's army and police.

"The jacket wallah detonated his car near a residential area in Azra district of Pashtun-infested Logar, killing four army soldiers and seven local coppers," Din Mohammad Darwish a front man for Pashtun-infested Logar's governor said.

Violence has increased in Afghanistan over the past year as foreign troops prepare to withdraw by the end of 2014.

The government is reluctant to release figures on casualties, but more than 4,000 police and soldiers were killed fighting Taliban holy warriors in 2013 and this year's toll is expected to be higher.

Afghanistan's president Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
, who took office about a month ago after months of destabilising deadlock over who won the election, said he hoped to achieve peace with the Taliban.

"Peace is not easy but is a mandatory," Ashraf Ghani told a news conference in Kabul on Saturday, two hours after the attack.

"If it was easy then it could be achieved during the past years."

Dozens of Libyans pledge allegiance to top IS leader
[ARABNEWS] Dozens of residents of a town in eastern Libya have pledged allegiance to His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
, leader of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
forces of Evil fighting in Syria and Iraq, according to a video and a resident.

Around 50 young people could be seen in a video posted on social media gathering in Derna to support Baghdadi, who calls himself "caliph," or Moslem leader, of Islamic State, an Al-Qaeda offshoot.

A Derna resident confirmed the authenticity of the video, taken late on Friday.

There has been growing concern among Western nations and Libya's neighbors that Islamic State is trying to exploit lawlessness in the oil producer where forces of Evil and other militias who helped topple Muammar Qadaffy
...a reminder that a single man with an idea can change an entire nation, usually for the worse...
in 2011 are carving out fiefdoms.

Derna, a port halfway between the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi and the Egyptian border, has since 2011 turned into a gathering point for forces of Evil and Al-Qaeda sympathizers.

Fifteen members of Islamic State, led by an Egyptian and a Saudi national, traveled to Derna from Syria in September trying to rally support and establish an Islamic State branch in Libya, Egyptian security officials have said.

Youth driving through the town waiving Islamic State flags could be seen after the visit, according to a video on social media.

Authorities were unable to open ballot boxes for Libya's parliamentary elections in June in Derna due to threats from hard boys. Militants also executed an Egyptian for alleged murder in Derna stadium.

Derna, already a stronghold of bandidos hard boyz under Qadaffy, has also made headlines with pictures of Islamic courts and cop shoppes.

Massive explosion near Benghazi Medical Centre as city-wide clashes continue
[Libya Herald] A huge boom-mobile detonated in the early hours of the morning near Benghazi Medical Centre (BMC) has damaged nearby homes and property as festivities in the city centre between pro-government forces and Islamists across Benghazi continue into their sixteenth day.

Residents in Fuwayhat near to BMC told the Libya Herald that the massive kaboom occurred beneath a bridge in the area at around 4 am. The blast did not result in any casualties, they explained, but did break windows in surrounding houses and even caused some minor damage to the hospital itself.

Elsewhere in the city fighting continued predominantly in the Ras Al-Beida, Sabri, Salmani, Maskeen, Laithi and Buatni areas.

Speaking yesterday on Sky News Arabia, LNA front man Mohammed Al-Hejazi said pro-government forces now held sway over 95 percent of Benghazi and had the backing of not only the people of Benghazi but most others in the country.

Head of Saiqa Special Forces
...Libya's elite army unit, insofar as they have one, formed from a mixture of paratroopers and commandos. The group emerged from a militia with the same name in 2010. It now numbers a few thousand and reports to the Ministry of Defence. It deployed in Benghazi in an attempt to control the carnage. As a result, it has been attacked and several of its officers murdered. The force is popular in Benghazi for its stance against Ansar al-Sharia group...
Investigations Unit Fadel Al-Hassi told this newspaper that fighting in Benghazi's district of t Laithi had centred around a medical supply warehouse which began yesterday afternoon. Several shells and missiles rained down on the area over the course of the festivities.

Hassi said two civilians had been killed by snipers from Benghazi Revolutionaries Shoura Council (BRSC) with three more civilians injured when they were caught in the crossfire during fighting in the area.

Jumhuriya Maternity Hospital in the Sabri district had to be evacuated yesterday because of fighting in the area. Hopes of transferring the facilities to the BMC did not succeed, apart from a skeleton staff for emergency caesarians, because facilities there are overstretched, according to BMC sources.

In Buatni, the Libyan Red Islamic Thingy was prevented from rescuing five families because of the intensity of festivities there. However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
seven families were evacuated by it in Ras Al-Beida and Sabri.

The Red Islamic Thingy has also been providing safe passage for engineers working in the Salmani area to restore power there.

Elsewhere the organization has continued to retrieve the bodies of combatants killed in the fighting. Five were taken to BMC for identification yesterday. Reclaimed bodies have often been left for a matter of weeks.

Seems nothing is said about damage to the bridge so I assume the kaboom failed. Either that it was one of those dreaded red wire green wire training accidents.

Egyptian helicopters fire on Sinai villages
[Dhaka Tribune] Egyptian helicopters have bombarded several villages in the northern Sinai Peninsula region, witnesses reported, after a rise in attacks against soldiers in the unstable and often violent region.

Residents told Al Jazeera that the assault was launched on the villages of al-Tuma al-Mukataa and al-Mahdiya. The army this week vowed to stamp out gangs operating in the region.

No casualties were been reported in Friday night's shelling.

On Saturday, Egyptian security officials said a roadside kaboom had struck an army vehicle, also on Friday, injuring seven soldiers. Armed groups have been battling security forces in the Sinai Peninsula for a decade

The blast near the city of el-Arish, near the Gazoo border, came a week after an attack in the same area killed 31 soldiers.

It was the deadliest attack targeting security forces since the army toppled former president, Mohammed Morsi, in July.

Another car kaboom in Mogadishu
Comes as a surprise, huh...
At least one person was killed and two others wounded on Saturday in a car bombing in Somalia's capital Mogadishu, police said.
This is another one. Not the other one.
"One person was killed and two others wounded this morning after a bomb attached to the car was remotely detonated," said Mohamed Dahir, a police commander in the Hodon district where the explosion happened.

Witnesses said that the person killed and one of the wounded were inside the car when it exploded, while the third injured victim had been near the vehicle on the street.

42 Boko Haram militants killed in Nigeria attack
[Pak Daily Times] At least 42 Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
holy warriors have been killed in a clash with military forces in a failed attack in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
's Borno State, a security source said on Saturday.

The holy warriors on cycle of violences and one Hilux vehicle invaded Sabon Gari, near Biu, about 189 kilometers from Maiduguri, on Friday morning but were repelled by miliary troops who have been on ground before the holy warriors arrived, the source told Xinhua. "Our men were mobilised to Sabon-Gari to repel the attack with support from the youth vigilante in the area and we dealt with them well," a military officer in Maiduguri who did not want his name in print said.

Audu Uba, a youth vigilante in Biu also confirmed the incident, adding that the military troops in the area pursue the flee holy warriors up to a nearby village where they were intercepted and killed. Germany Arrests ETA Fugitive Bomb Expert
Not all terrorists are jihadis. Only most of them.
[AnNahar] German police incarcerated
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
one of the most wanted runaway members of the Basque separatist group ETA
ETA or Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (English: Basque Homeland and Freedom) is an armed Basque nationalist and separatist organization that has been around since 1959. It demands independence from Spain and France for the Greater Basque Country. The group is proscribed as a terrorist organization by most civilized countries. More than 700 members of the organization are incarcerated in prisons in Spain, La Belle France, and other countries, though members do seem to find ready hospitality in Venezuela.
, Tomas Elorriaga Kunze, who is wanted for forgery and bomb-making, the Spanish government said.

Elorriaga Kunze, 51 -- known by the alias Teo -- had been on the run for 15 years after a string of convictions in La Belle France for belonging to an gang, the interior ministry said in a statement late on Friday.

A Gay Paree court issued a European arrest warrant for him in 2009.

"He is one of the members of the terrorist group ETA who has spent the most time in hiding," the ministry said in a statement.

It said he was a trained industrial engineer specializing in electronics and telecommunications and had various roles in logistics and procurement of bomb-making equipment.

"He contributed with his technical know-how to the making of bombs, bombs, activation by mobile telephone and new generation remote controls with which the terrorist organization caused dozens of deaths over recent decades."

Elorriaga Kunze was arrested in a joint operation by German and Spanish police.

German police said a Spanish ETA member was arrested on Friday in Mannheim in the west of Germany, but would not confirm his identity. They said the suspect would be extradited to La Belle France.

ETA is blamed for the killing of 829 people in a four-decade campaign of bombings and shootings for an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southwest La Belle France.

It has been weakened by the arrests of big shots and in October 2011 declared a "definitive end" to its armed activity, but has not formally disarmed nor disbanded as the Spanish and French governments demand.

20 militants, four security personnel killed in Orakzai clash
[DAWN] At least 20 murderous Moslems and four security personnel were killed on Saturday in a clash in the northwestern tribal region of Orakzai, official sources told Dawn.

Three security personnel and a number of murderous Moslems were also injured during the clash in lower Orakzai's Shirin Dara area, sources said, adding that the firefight lasted several hours.

This could not be independently verified as journalists have restricted access in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

Saturday's clash comes as the army is engaged in an offensive against local and foreign murderous Moslems in the northwestern tribal regions of North Wazoo and Khyber.

Orakzai is one of Pakistain's seven semi-autonomous tribal regions in the area, where Pak Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked murderous Moslems are said to have carved out strongholds.

Two Saudi fighters die in Kobani
[ARABNEWS] The recent allied bombing of IS targets in Kobani killed two Saudi fighters among many others, a London-based Arabic daily reported.

The two Saudi nationals were fighting for IS against the Kurds in Kobani on the Turkish-Syrian border. They have been identified as Muhammad Al-Shaheen and Saleh Al-Qobaisy.

Al-Shaheen, also known as Sattam Al-Jaziri, was one of the early members of the fighting fronts in Syria and joined ranks with the forces of Evil in the northern Syrian city of Aazaz two years ago. He volunteered for suicide kabooms and had driven explosives-laden cars a number of times without achieving his goal.

Al-Shaheen was sent to Kobani to fight the Kurds, but he returned without completing his task. While heading for Jarabuls city, northeast of Aleppo, he was injured in a mine blast which compelled him to go back to Kobani. On his arrival at the battle zone, he was killed in an Allied bombing on Thursday evening. Fellow terrorist Saleh Al-Qobaisy also died in the same incident, the report said.

Espionage prompts ISIS to expel its Kurdish fighters from the Hamrin battle front
[Iraq News] On Saturday, a local source in Diyala province said that acts of espionage committed by Kurdish members of ISIS to aid opposing Kurdish Peshmerga forces lead the commander of the Hamrin area to dismiss all Kurdish nationals from ISIS who were fighting on the Hamrin battle front located northeast of Baquba.
Did they expel them or execute them? The story isn't clear.
The source said in an interview for IraqiNews.com that âthe so-called Wali of Hamrin area (50 km north-east of Baquba), nicknamed Abu Zakaria Pakistan passed a resolution that includes the dismissal of all its Kurdish fighters from the Hamrin front, especially in the parts of Jalawla and Saadia.â

The source, who asked not to be named, added that âThis decision came after internal security breaches due to the covert cooperation of some Kurdish members of ISIS with Kurdish Peshmerga forces by providing information on the activities and movements of ISIS units, which led to targeted strikes, resulting in heavy losses in lives and equipment among the organization ISIS.â

ISIS militants line up, kill 50 tribesmen in Iraq
ISIS group extremists lined up and shot dead at least 50 tribesmen and women in Iraq's Anbar province, officials said on Saturday, the latest mass killing committed by the group. The shooting happened late on Friday in the village of Ras Al Maa, north of the provincial capital of Ramadi, Anbar councilman Faleh Al Issawi said.

Militants accused men and women of the Al Bu Nimr tribe of retaliating against them after being displaced from their homes when the group seized the Anbar town of Hit last month, Al Issawi said.

"These killings are taking place almost on a daily basis now in the areas under the control of the ISIS group and they will continue unless this terrorist group is stopped," Al Issawi said.

An official in the Anbar governor's office confirmed the death toll.

On Thursday, authorities found the bodies of 48 Sunni tribesmen killed by the ISIS group in Anbar.

Meanwhile on Saturday, the United Nations mission in Baghdad said that at least 1,273 Iraqis were killed in violence in October, a slight increase compared to last month amid the ISIS group's assault. The UN report said violence killed 856 civilians and 417 members of Iraq's security forces, while attacks wounded 2,010 Iraqis. The worst-hit city was Baghdad, with 379 civilians killed, the report said.

The UN figures do not take into account causalities in Anbar province nor some other militant-held parts of Iraq.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
All Crossings Closed, Gaza Is Totally Isolated From The World
[Ynet] Rocket on Israel has led to the closure of Kerem Shalom and Erez, while Egypt is waging war on the tunnels into its own territory; with no way in or out, Gazoo is being pushed further into a corner.

The creation of the so-called Rafah buffer ‐ a strip 14 kilometers long and about half a kilometer wide ‐ came in response to last week's attack in the Sinai that killed 33 Egyptian soldiers.

Egypt military operations succeeded in destroying 1,500 smuggling tunnels, but the satellite photos have revealed hundreds of tunnels, inside mosques in Rafah, inside bedrooms and inside stores.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who has waged war in recent months on both the smuggling tunnels from Gazoo and the terrorism in the Sinai Peninsula, explained in an interview with the Kuwaiti media that "efforts continue more strongly and most of the tunnels have been closed." He again claimed that "outside hands" were behind the deadly attack, and that the Egyptian military had been able to eliminate a number of the snuffies involved.

Egypt military operations succeeded in destroying 1,500 smuggling tunnels, but the satellite photos have revealed hundreds of tunnels, inside mosques in Rafah, inside bedrooms and inside stores. Initial action led to the establishment the buffer zone and the speedy evacuation and demolition of 800 homes, with local residents compensated for their removal.

The move sparked criticism from al-Sisi's opponents, and Al-Jazeera
... an Arab news network headquartered in Qatar, notorious for carrying al-Qaeda press releases. The name means the Peninsula, as in the Arabian Peninsula. In recent years it has settled in to become slightly less biased than MSNBC, in about the same category as BBC or CBS...
described it as "expulsion". The Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
i network, which is affiliated with the Moslem Brüderbund, even quoted Egyptian civilians and political activists who claimed that this was the Egyptian version of the "1948 Nakba". The Egyptian state media, on the other hand, emphasized civilian understanding for the action, and the newspaper "Al-Ahram" quoted the evacuated residents as saying that they "stand by the state after the snuffies made their lives hell."

Rocket fire from Gazook territory is defined by Israel as the first gross violation by Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, since the end of Operation Protective Edge. It also led to the decision to close the two crossings into Gazoo - Kerem Shalom for goods into southern Gazoo and Erez for people in the northern Strip ‐ both to pressure Hamas and to clearly demonstrate to Gazoo's residents the price of the rocket fire.

The Israeli response comes at the height of movement of goods, funds and building materials for the rehabilitation of the thousands of homes and buildings damaged or destroyed during the summer fighting.
The Israeli response comes at the height of movement of goods, funds and building materials for the rehabilitation of the thousands of homes and buildings damaged or destroyed during the summer fighting. It "joins" the closure of the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian side, and is in practice totally disconnects Gazoo from the rest of the world. Hamas has already asked Egypt to open the crossing on its side, in order to prevent a humanitarian disaster.
Still working on the concept of consequences, guys?
For now, it is not clear who was behind the rocket fire at the weekend, given that Hamas has enforced the ceasefire and prevented firing at Israel - even by independent factions.

The organization itself has recently returned to experimenting with rockets inside the Gazoo Strip, and in the last two weeks at least eight rockets were launched, most of the sea, and even restored its ability to produce rockets. Its activities are being conducted in a kind of political void, given that Hamas' negotiations with Israel have been frozen by Egypt

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Battle for Kobane Rages as Iraqi Fighters Arrive
[AnNahar] Fighting raged in the Syrian border town of Kobane on Saturday after jihadists launched a new assault on Kurdish militia bolstered by the arrival of heavily armed Iraqi peshmerga forces.

The roughly 150 Iraqi fighters, many of them chanting "Kobane", received a hero's welcome as they crossed the border from Turkey late Friday to join fellow Kurds trying to repel the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group.

The town has become a key battleground whose capture would be a major prize for the jihadists, giving them unbroken control of a long stretch of Syria's border with Turkey.

Fierce festivities in and around Kobane have killed about 100 IS fighters in the past three days, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Fifteen Kurdish defenders also bit the dust on Friday, according to the Britannia-based monitoring group, which relies on a wide network of sources inside Syria.

It said in total 958 people had been killed since IS launched an assault on Kobane in mid-September -- 576 IS jihadists, 361 Kurdish fighters and 21 civilians.

Kobane's defenders have been pleading for reinforcements and the peshmerga armed with machineguns, heavy artillery and rocket launchers traveled through Turkey to Syria from Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region.

They stood atop their pick-ups, waving to onlookers and brandishing their rifles in the air as they crossed the frontier into Kobane. Turkish police lined the road holding anti-riot shields.

Ankara also allowed dozens of lightly armed Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
rebels to cross into Kobane this week.

Intense fighting erupted late Friday in the town and continued during the night as Kurdish fighters fended off a new IS attack in the north of the city, the Observatory said.

Gunfire and kabooms were heard on Saturday morning although the peshmerga forces were not thought to have yet joined the fighting, it said.

U.S. hopes of creating and training a moderate rebel force as a counterweight to jihadists and Assad's forces suffered a blow after Al-Qaeda affiliated snuffies drove rebels of the Western-backed Syrian Revolutionary Front from their bastion in the northwestern province of Idlib.

The Al-Nusra
...the current nom de guerre of al-Qaeda in the Levant, which isn't to be confused with al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant...
Front jihadist group captured the village of Deir Sinbel and seized arms and tanks from the SRF, the Observatory said Saturday after 24 hours of combat.

The moderate rebel group, backed by the West and various Arab countries, favors the establishment of a democratic state in a post-Assad Syria.

In Iraq, government forces Friday attacked the strategic jihadist-held town of Baiji, which has been out of Baghdad's control for months, regaining control of two areas, army officers said.

Baiji lies on the main highway to Iraq's IS-controlled second city djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, and its recapture would also help to further isolate snuffies in the city of Tikrit, to the south.

U.S. officials meanwhile said Washington was drafting plans to deploy American military advisers to Iraq's troubled western province of Anbar and to help arm Sunni tribes to fight IS.

About 600 U.S. military advisers are already based in Baghdad and in the northern city of Arbil.

But as IS has steadily rolled back the Iraqi army in the west, U.S. and coalition officials have grown increasingly convinced of the need to station advisers in Anbar to assist the Iraqi troops.

"We're going to have to help stiffen their resistance and provide some help outside of those two cities, Baghdad and Arbil, and specifically to help them in Anbar province," a senior U.S. military officer said on condition of anonymity.

#1  Iraqi Kurdish troops bring out heavy guns in Kobane

ERBIL/SYRIAN-TURKISH BORDER - Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga troops entered into the battle for the besieged city of Kobane in earnest on Sunday, as the sound of heavy weaponry they brought with them from Iraq echoed across the Syrian-Turkish border, according to a Rudaw team on the Turkish side.

US-led coalition planes pounded Islamic State (ISIS) positions in the city overnight in the most intense bombing in weeks, with local witnesses counting between five and seven strikes between 10pm Saturday and 7am Sunday. Planes hit another ISIS position late Sunday morning, which was followed by fierce Kurdish gunfire nearby.

Sources within the Peshmerga confirmed that Kurdish Region troops had deployed to various positions within the city accompanying People’s Protection Units (PYD), the Syrian Kurdish force that resisted the militants alone for two weeks without airstrikes, and six weeks without help on the ground.

Meanwhile hundreds of civilians fleeing the fighting were seen on the border. The Turkish military prevented a number of people from delivering food, water, and other supplies to the crowd as they waited to cross.

A large number of cars could also be seen, as many refugees entering Turkey with cars were not able to pay the automobile toll, which costs $700 according to several Kobane residents. (Link)

#6  “The peshmerga forces that joined the resistance in Kobane and our forces launched a coordinated attack. The attack was launched on the position of the gangs around the town with Katyusha rockets. No information has yet been obtained regarding the result of the attack”, said the YPG Press Centre. The YPG Press Centre has issued a statement on the 48th day of the Kobanê resistance, saying that in the last 24 hours 43 gang members have been killed. The statement also said that the YPG and peshmerga had carried out a coordinated attack on the gangs using Katyusha rockets.

The YPG has provided detailed information regarding the clashes that intensified in the northwest of Kobane, in Municipality Street and Azadi Square of the town. YPG also reported that YPG and peshmerga forces jointly launched an operation targeting the ISIS gangs with rockets.
YPG said while the attacks of the ISIS gangs were repulsed, gangs suffered heavy losses in the counter attacks launched by YPG forces.
YPG said their forces launched operations against the positions of the gangs in the Kaniya Kurda area to the northwest of the town.
YPG said: “As far as ascertained, 14 gang members were killed in the operation. Our forces seized 2 heavy machine guns, 1 rocket, 1 AK 47 and a large amount of ammunition belonging to these weapons. Our forces also seized the bodies of 3 gang members”.

Ah the always compassionate Turks. /sarc What incredible scumbags the Turks are. Whya re we still treating them like an ally, when their behavior shows them to be hostile?

1. Withdraw all US and NATO forces from Turkey.

2. stop all aid, military and financial to Turkey, kicking them out of NATO.

3. Stop all trade agreements with Turkey from which they draw any benefit.

4. Back the Kurds for their revolution and insurgency for their homeland inside SE Turkey, and do so in a meaningful manner, such as promising full military support if Kurdistan is attacked.

5. Just to piss off Erdogan, back Greece in all disputes, especially Cyprus.

#14  JohnQC,

To my surprise I am finding the best source is Twitter. Kurds are heavy Tweeters. They check each others images, videos and reports as they are intensely concerned about what is going on in their region so they are quick to fact check and correct their information as well as we are.

The Pesh, YPG, YPJ, FSA and many others including ISIS have numerous hashtags throughout Twitter.

I have to do a lot of Arabic to English translations but I find the Kurdish resistance fascinating.

#21  Ebb, Very true - no putting the Kurds back into the corner. I've "trained the trainers" to the west of Iraq for people indigenous to the Kurdish region. And "visited" there briefly in better times.

Its time we quit pretending and simply supported the Kurds overtly throught the region. The Cult of Apo (Abdullah Öcalan) is worrisome, but its also a lever. He's 66, and he has already moved philosophically from the marxist toward western/democratic social ideaology, If *he* gets credit for being a founding father (ego!) of Kursdistan, there might be a route to get the PKK into a liberating and militaristic but non-terroristic (no civilian targets) force. They've already renounced civilian targets years ago.

The western press needs to catch up, and stop parroting the Turkish/Erdogan propaganda.

April 2014 Article

IRBIL: Iran has supplied weapons and ammunition to Iraqi Kurdish forces, Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani said Tuesday at a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Irbil, capital of Iraq's Kurdish region.

The direct arming of Kurdish forces is a contentious issue because some Iraqi politicians have said they suspect Kurdish leaders have aspirations to break away from the central government completely. The move could also be seen by some as a prelude to Iran taking a more direct role in broader Iraqi conflict.

"We asked for weapons and Iran was the first country to provide us with weapons and ammunition," Barzani said.

#39  That pattern camo is similar to the tricolor "pinks" the US used to have, back toward Desert Storm post-chocolate-chip. Its common enough in the region, plus the Navy was wearing similar up until a few years ago.

As for the training, all the training in the world isn't going to remedy the lack of heavy weapons, especially artillery. Light infantry can only do so much on its own.

The rocket attack is more of whats needed - interdiction that I'm always nattering on about. ISIS is not putting their top end troops from what those videos show. Those are not the hard Chechen fighters, those are hamburger volunteers.

The PKK videos I have seen, although likely edited with bias aforethought, show some pretty good fire discipline versus the usual Arab irregulars' pray and spray.

As far as training in the region, nothing recent, but I know others who have done some of that as late as this past winter. A bit of snow in the area.

Problem with getting old is your friends get old too, and fewer of us still able to be active with anything more than a keyboard, and fewer of us still around. Thats how things go - one can hope to preserve the lessons learned so they don't have to be relearned. Academics like Obama seem to think they don't need institutional memory for anything. Damned fools.

God help the Kurds, because in the end, we aren't going to do much with the current leadership in place.

Air strikes fail to stem flow of foreign fighters to Syria
Foreign fighters continue pouring into Syria at a rate of more than 1,000 a month, a pace that has not changed despite the US-led air campaign against ISIS militants, the Washington Post reported late Thursday.

The numbers suggest that while the air strikes have not deterred foreigners, they have also not incited larger numbers to counter the American-led campaign, the paper said, quoting US intelligence and counterterrorism officials.

"The flow of fighters making their way to Syria remains constant, so the overall number continues to rise," a US intelligence official said.

But it could be weeks before a change in the rate becomes apparent, because of a lag in the intelligence that the CIA is examining, the Post quoted US officials as saying.

It said the trend over the past year suggests there are more than 16,000 foreign fighters in Syria, the Post said.

Reasons for the flow include sophisticated recruiting campaigns by radical groups in Syria like the ISIS militants and the relative ease with which people can travel to the country from North Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

#8  No need for ISIS to "overwhlem" Turkis intel, when its the Turkish Intel guys who are tacitly supporting them.

Think Pakistan->ISI->Taliban->Afghanistan.

Now transpose to Turkey->MIT->ISIS->Syria

#9  Plenty of ISIS "volunteers" crossing the border into Syria from Turkey. Unlike Kurds, the Turks look the other way when the ISIS guys cross.

MIT head Fidan is an Erdogan crony. The leak of his comments about casually being able to generate a false flag attack were news (ignored in the west) back in March. The leaks of voice recordings verifying this were one of the reasons Erdogan tried to censor the internet earlier this year.
