Truett Cathy, Chick-fil-A Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Dies at Age 93
Restaurant Chain to Remain Privately Held, Closed on Sunday
ATLANTA, Sept. 8, 2014 – In a message sent to employees today, Chick-fil-A® announced that its
founder and chairman emeritus, S. Truett Cathy, died at 1:35 a.m. Monday at the age of 93. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones.
Born March 14, 1921, in Eatonton, Georgia, Cathy was four years old when his family moved to Atlanta, where he attended Boys High, now known as Grady High School. In 1946, Cathy relied on a keen business sense, a strong work ethic and a deep Christian faith to build a tiny diner in the Atlanta suburb of Hapeville, Georgia. He developed it into Chick-fil-A, which today has the highest same-store sales and is the nation’s largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain based on annual system-wide sales. It was at the original
restaurant that Cathy created the sandwich that became the company’s signature item. Credited with creating the original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich and pioneering in-mall fast food, Cathy
built one of the nation’s largest family-owned companies, as Chick-fil-A reached $5 billion in annual sales in 2013. Currently, there are more than 1,800 Chick-fil-A restaurants operating in 40 states and Washington, D.C.
Remarkably, Cathy led Chick-fil-A on an unparalleled record of 47 consecutive years of annual sales increases.Cathy’s oldest son, Dan, became president of Chick-fil-A in 2001, and chairman and chief executive officer in
2013, while Truett Cathy continued in the role of chairman emeritus until his death.
Cathy was a devout Southern Baptist who taught Sunday school to 13-year-old boys for more than 50
years. As an extension of the founder’s faith and the clearest example of incorporating biblical principles into the workplace, all Chick-fil-A restaurants—without exception—operate with a “Closed-on-Sunday” policy. Rare within
the food service industry, this policy allows employees a day for family, worship, fellowship or rest, and also underscores Cathy’s desire to put principles and people ahead of profits. Chick-fil-A will remain privately held and closed on Sundays.
Cathy was often quoted as saying: “I’d like to be remembered as one who kept my priorities in the right order. We live in a changing world, but we need to be reminded that the important things have not changed. I have always encouraged my restaurant operators and team members to give back to the local community. We should be about more than just selling chicken; we should be a part of our customers’ lives and the communities in which we serve.”
Cathy’s business approach was largely driven by personal satisfaction and a sense of obligation to the
community and its young people. His WinShape Foundation, founded in 1984, grew from his desire to "shape winners" by helping young people succeed in life through scholarships and other youth-support programs. In addition, through its Leadership Scholarship Program, the Chick-fil-A chain has given more than $32 million in financial assistance to Chick-fil-A restaurant employees since 1973. As part of Cathy’s WinShape Homes® program, 13 foster care homes were launched and operated by Cathy and the WinShape Foundation to provide long-term care for foster children within a positive family environment. WinShape Homes has provided a safe and secure home to more than 450 children in which they could grow physically, spiritually and emotionally. WinShape Camps® was founded in 1985 as a residential, two-week summer camp to impact young people through experiences that enhance their Christian faith, character and relationships. Each summer, more than 18,000 campers attend WinShape Camps.
In 2003, Cathy helped his son and daughter-in-law, Bubba and Cindy, celebrate the opening of WinShape RetreatSM, a high-end retreat and conference facility located on the campus of Berry College in
Rome, Georgia. The multi-use facility hosts marriage-enrichment retreats along with business and churchrelated conferences, and in summer months houses WinShape Camp for girls, directed by Cathy’s daughter, Trudy Cathy White.
Cathy received countless awards over the years, including most recently becoming a Georgia Trustees Inductee (2013); Fayette County (Georgia) Chamber of Commerce Dreambuilder Award (2012); Children's Champion Hunger Award (2011); World Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award (2010); Salute to Greatness Martin Luther King Jr. Award (2009); William E. (Looking Glass Books, 2011). He also was co-author of The Generosity Factor with Ken Blanchard (Zondervan Publishing, 2002).
In addition to presiding over one of the most successful restaurant chains in America, Cathy was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeannette McNeil Cathy; sons Dan T. and Don “Bubba” Cathy; daughter Trudy Cathy White; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

[Dhaka Tribune] The blockaders have locked a number of classrooms of different faculties at Chittagong University (CU) by putting "super glue" at the locks on Sunday the eighth consecutive day of indefinite strike at the campus halting the academic activities.
Earlier, the blockaders bombed on campus-bound shuttle train for the second time during enforcing their strike on Saturday.
Despite passing eighth days of the strike started from August 31, university authorities are still silent over the issue while the protesters have been carrying out spell of subversive activities in a bid to halt the academic activities.

[Channel News Asia] MOSCOW: Russia will retaliate against a new round of Western sanctions over Ukraine and may block flights through its airspace, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview published on Monday (Sep 8).
Medvedev also suggested that Western sanctions would not make the Kremlin change its course, adding that Russians - like the Chinese - would simply pull together in the face of new punitive measures.
The European Union is expected on Monday to consider new sanctions against Russia, in a further blow to the country's ailing economy already teetering on the brink of recession. Brussels said it was ready to review the need for new sanctions if a truce agreed between Kremlin-backed rebels and Kiev forces holds in eastern Ukraine. Bugger! There goes my Fall Volga River cruise and stacking doll swap meet.

That would be a very stupid move. While this would indeed hurt airlines like Lufthansa (their flights to China, Thailand, Japan etc.), it would hurt Russia much more. First they lose the fees, second Aeroflot would certainly face retaliation.

As Ukrainian forces abandoned their positions at the airport at Lugansk, those forces have been redeployed to the northwest along the Donetsk River to deal with the latest rebel attacks.
Up until the ceasefire pro Russian militias had been trying to drive Ukrainian military forces away from the river crossing near Schasyte and at other points in the area. The move was in line with the militias' other moves to expand their area of operation as quickly as possible as the truce was being negotiated.
Another purpose behind the increased tempo of operation was to drive Ukrainian artillery away from two of the main cities in contest, Donetsk and Lugansk. While the airport had been abandoned, destroyed by Ukrainian forces, the Donetsk airport remains in Ukrainian hands and at least one apparent center for artillery missions into the city.
According to the Ukrainian military blogger Roman Burko, militia attacks up until the ceasefire were nearly constant, and pro Russian militia have been trying at advance in other areas to the north of Donetsk, namely near Gorlovka. That city was a point of contention between the belligerents for several days as an unidentified Ukrainian armor unit attempted to drive into Donetsk from the north, but had been encircled near Zhdanivka and Rozivka. At last report, those Ukrainian forces were forced to withdraw to Debaltsevo under heavy artillery fire.
Further south along the southern coast of Donetsk oblast, according to Burko, one day before the ceasefire went into effect, pro Russian militia attempted to drive towards Mariupol, but were repelled.
Pro Russian militia encountered the Ukrainian Azov Battalion near the village of Shyrokyne, which is 23 kilometers east of Mariupol.
According to the data supplied, the area around the village had been fortified just before the attack took place. Militias used a tank company and a mechanized rifle company, supported by a 122mm artillery battery and 122mm rocket launchers.
The attack was repulsed when a Ukrainian artillery unit hit one heavy truck carrying militia infantry, and other forces destroyed or disabled two tanks. Militia forces responded with artillery fire, presumably as their forces were withdrawn.
Ukrainian forces defending the village reported five wounded.
Also, according to Burko, additional Russian troops in the Rostov region, just across the border were recorded moving in convoy along the Rostov-Taganrog highway, some of them detachments from larger divisional formations.
Among the units identified were battle groups including elements from the Russian 1st Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 2nd Guards Motor Rifle Division (Naro-Fominsk), the Russian 12th (or 13th) Tank Regiment of the 4th Guards Tank Division (Naro-Fominsk), the Russian 25th Motorized Rifle Brigade (Vladimir) and the Russian 27th Motorized Rifle Brigade (Vidnoe).
All of those units are from the Russian Western Military District, which protects approaches to the Moscow Military district and the Russian capital.
The brigade sized units are likely independent units attached to armies or military districts, but the regimental units are attached to divisional units, which indicate that the Russian have at least mobilized parts of the their maneuver forces in the Western Military District.
Also, the Russian army issued a call-up three weeks ago of all reservists for refresher training on new weapons systems. The call is said to end October, when presumably those reservists will be sent home.

Appears the neighborhood failed to improve in the subsequent two years. Time to blame his personal bias, hip hop, white people, and move on.

I'm a white American, who happened to be married to a black woman for seven years (we got married in 1989, in Florissant, Missouri, about two miles north of Ferguson). As a US Army Officer, I served under two black company commanders, a black Brigade Commander, and a black Division Commander. As an Infantry Training Company Commander, my First Sergeant, my Executive Officer, my Supply Sergeant, and my Senior Drill Sergeant were all black. I was proud to work with them all.
With all that said, in America today, I wouldn't be caught dead (at least, not more than once) anywhere near any place at which a significant number of blacks congregate in the streets, or out in public. Too many are predatory, feral animals. There are many upstanding, hard-working blacks who deserve my respect - and none of them are out in the streets with the feral animals.
There is a cold wind blowing across America, leading eventually to an endpoint that is not going to be pretty.

Sounds to me like he wanted to offload the Hawks and needed a pretext. You don't want to appear to be too willing to sell; people start to wonder what's wrong with what you're selling.
