Security agents are on high alert after intelligence reports indicated that Al-Shabaab militants were planning attacks in Kenya and other African countries with their soldiers to Somalia. Information from Kenyan intelligence agencies and the 2014 US Global Threat Assessment report indicate that government buildings and other installations could be targeted. Also targeted are Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Uganda because of those countries' troop contributions to the African Union peace-keeping force in Somalia.
Mr David Kimaiyo, the Inspector-General of Police, Thursday said that security had been beefed up in the areas identified as potential targets.
"We have our intelligence reports and have enhanced security across the country for some time now. It is not as a result of the warning issued on Wednesday," he said.
Mr Kimaiyo insisted that the beefing up of security was not as a result of the latest reports. A joint team made up of officers drawn from the National Intelligence Service (NIS), Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) have covertly been operating over the past few days in the places identified as terrorist risks.
On Wednesday last week, a team of 20 officers from the General Service Unit's Recce Squad was deployed at a shopping mall as a precautionary measure.
One embassy in the outskirts of the city centre also wrote to the police requesting enhanced security. In its letter, the embassy said it feared that some of its interests in the Horn of Africa and in East Africa could be targeted by terrorists. Said part of the letter: "This Embassy received warning that the terrorists group Al-Shabaab is preparing an armed terrorist attack... The Embassy therefore requests the relevant Kenyan authorities to immediately strengthen and enhance the security of the embassy's compound."
Information from the police indicate that terrorists could be planning two simultaneous attacks.
Already, airports, especially Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, have introduced tougher security measures which require that all vehicles be stopped and searched at entry points while the occupants should alight for frisking.
Among the new rules is a requirement that all airline passengers arrive at the airport an hour before the recommended reporting time to ensure they have sufficient time for the security checks. The security standard was raised a level higher two weeks after a small explosion at the airport which was blamed on security lapse.

The European Union Naval Force warship FS Siroco on Wednesday transferred five suspected Somali pirates to the Seychelles, where they will be prosecuted for acts of Piracy in the Indian Ocean.
On Saturday 18 January, the French vessel FS Siroco, in cooperation with a Japanese maritime patrol aircraft and a helicopter from the vessel JS Samidare in support of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF/CTF 151) anti-piracy task group, freed the crew of an Indian Dhow that was believed to have been used by the five suspected pirates as a mother-ship in the attack on an oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden a day earlier. Private security on board repelled the attack, which was the first recorded incidence of Somali piracy in 2014.
The EU Naval Force said its personnel were able to gather a significant amount of evidence to prosecute the pirates. On that basis, the Republic of the Seychelles has accepted the transfer of the suspected pirates with the intention to prosecute them.
The EU, including through the EU Naval Force (Navfor), has developed a successful partnership with the Republic of Seychelles in the fight against piracy. The transfer agreement signed in December 2009 has up to date allowed for 47 (including WednesdayÂ’s five) suspected pirates to be transferred. With 33 pirates now prosecuted, the Seychelles play a leading role in achieving a legal finish against pirates in the region, the EU Navfor said.
Maciej Popowski, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, and current Chairman of the international Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS), said: “We thank the Government of Seychelles for their continued collaboration which shows the quality of our relations and their very active role in fighting piracy in the Indian Ocean.”

In fashion reminiscent of Itchy and Scratchy,
The Marshal is putting to use his Apaches.
If you want to stir shit in Abdel Fattah's Sinai,
Pucker up, buttercup -- kiss bye-bye to your hiney.
Sure, Jawn will be fretting and tutting, "For shame!
This endangers my phony-ass peace process game!"
But if he keeps on finding and blowing 'em down,
Then al-Sisi looks like the new sherif in town.

[Ynet] IAF launches retaliation attack on Gazoo in wake of rocket fire, targeting 'terror activity site and a weapon manufacturing facility,' wounding four in latest round of escalation in south
Israeli fighter jets attacked the Gazoo Strip on Friday morning in response to rocket fire on Israel Thursday, targeting an arms warehouse and rocket launch site, and injuring four Paleostinians.
Sources on both sides confirmed the attack, which came hours after a rocket fired from the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-run Paleostinian enclave hit the Jewish state. According to the IDF Spokesperson Unit direct hits were confirmed, and "the terror organization Hamas is responsible."
Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon confirmed reports that the IAF struck three direct Hamas targets in the Gazoo Strip early Friday morning: "We will not tolerate rocket fire on Israel," he said.
"The IDF and other security forces will continue to chase after those who shoot at Israel or try to execute terror attacks, and they will not hesitate to attack those attempting to do so."
Paleostinian security sources said two strikes targeted training sites of Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas's armed wing, in Beit Lahiya in northern Gazoo were hit.
In two additional air strikes at sites west of southern Gazoo city Rafah two Paleostinians were maimed, the sources said.
The attack came a short while after a rocket fired from Gazoo hit in an open area in the Sdot Negev Regional Council, causing no damage or injuries. Residents reported to hearing blasts.
A statement from the Israeli military said that in response to the rocket, its aircraft targeted "a terror activity site and a weapon manufacturing facility in the northern Gazoo strip and a weapon storage facility" in southern Gazoo.
Tensions have recently risen in and around Gazoo after a year of relative calm, with six Paleostinians and an Israeli killed since December 20 and Death Eater rocket fire sparking retaliatory air strikes.
Last week, at least one rocket hit an open area in the Eshkol Regional Council and two rockets hit open areas near Eilat. No injuries or damage were reported
On January 22, the IDF killed two Paleostinians, one of them identified by Israel as a Death Eater from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine ... Paleostinian Marxist movement, founded in 1967. It is considered a terrorist organization by more than 30 countries including the U.S., European Union, Australia, Canada, and Antarctica. The PFLP's stated goal is the establishment of a socialist State in Paleostine. They pioneered armed aircraft hijackings in the late 60s and early 70s... who the army said was behind recent rocket attacks.
Hamas recently confirmed it had deployed forces in Gazoo to "preserve the truce" with Israel, brokered by Egypt, which ended the last major confrontation in November 2012.
While Hamas does not routinely launch projectiles at Israel, but the State holds the Islamist terror group that seized power in Gazoo in 2007 responsible for any such attacks, as it is the ad hoc sovereign of the enclave.
170,000 rockets
On Wednesday, Military Intelligence Chief Brigadier General Aviv Kochavi said that despite a drop in the number of missiles and rockets threatening Israel, their level of precision has drastically risen.
"Some 170,000 rockets and missiles are threatening the State of Israel from all regions. Up until recently, the number was much greater and it has decreased, but it will go up again.
[Ynet] Paleostinian sources reported that 15 people sustained injuries in festivities with IDF troops at the Jalazun refugee camp near Ramallah. Reportedly, Israeli defense forces used crowd dispersal measures.
[Ynet] Two young Palestinians sustained injuries as a result of IDF gunfire at an East Jerusalem checkpoint, the Palestinian news agency Maan reported.
Golly! What d'you suppose the lads did to trigger that response?
[Ynet] Official sources in the Gazoo Strip have reported that a Paleostinian man who approached the border fence with Israel east of Beit Lahiya was shot by an IDF force.
He sustained a leg wound and was evacuated to a hospital in the northern part of Gazoo.

Islamist militants in the southern Philippines have vowed to crush a massive government offensive aimed at breaking the resistance of a breakaway faction of the country's largest Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) currently negotiating with Manila.
Abu Misry Mama, "Abu Misery Mama"?
a spokesman for the group called Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), said the government offensive only brought misery for thousands of civilians who fled the military assault in the provinces of North Cotabato and Maguindanao. He said, "The only losers here are the civilians who are affected by the government offensive in North Cotabato and Maguindanao."
The 6th Infantry Division, which is on the forefront of the military offensive, said as many as 40 militants were killed since the assault began on January 27, a day after Philippine peace negotiators and the MILF signed the last of the four annexes that would pave the way for an expanded Muslim autonomous region in Mindanao.
Col. Dickson Hermoso, citing intelligence reports, insisted that at least 40 militants had been killed and that many more were injured in the government offensive, an allegation strongly denied by Mama.
"Hermoso is a propagandist and liar, and I tell you that all he said was a lie. We have no casualties, although seven BIFF are slightly wounded in the fighting," Mama said, adding they destroyed at least three armored personnel carriers and a battle tank in the clashes.
Hermoso also said that the BIFF harbors foreign terrorists and had been attacking military and civilian targets in Mindanao, but Mama just laughed off the military report. He said, "I also heard the news and Hermoso is saying that we have foreign terrorists in our ranks, but the BIFF does not need any foreign fighters, we can fight on our own and defend ourselves and the Muslims in Mindanao. This is all propaganda of the military."
Hermoso said the BIFF has targeted civilians and were behind the series of bombings, killings and extortion. He said BIFF leaders are facing many criminal charges and so were their members.
Miriam Ferrer, head of the Philippine peace panel, said over the last 9 months, BIFF militants repeatedly harassed troops and terrorized local communities. They planted roadside bombs, shot at soldiers, took school teachers as hostages, and in one instance, even beheaded a civilian captive. She said, "The ongoing military operations are geared at degrading the BIFF's capability to continue to cause harm to the government forces, civilians and the peace process."
Ferrer said the government and the MILF have taken necessary steps to ensure the operations will not spill over to involve MILF militants or cause unnecessary or prolonged hardship to civilians. She said the MILF is assisting in the operations by helping the government contain the movements of the BIFF.

[An Nahar] Lebanese troops exchanged fire with unidentified Syrian gunnies near the country's border with Syria Friday, a security source said, after two-cross border incidents in the area.
There were no casualties in the shootout, which came after at least one was killed by shelling from Syria and a deadly rebel attack against Syrian forces launched from inside Leb.
"Lebanese army forces exchanged fire with gunnies near an army checkpoint in an area near the town of Wadi Khaled," the security source said.
He added that the gunnies, believed to be Syrian, had escaped afterwards.
The fighting came after a barrage of shells fired from Syria hit the Akkar border city, killing a Syrian man and wounding three other people.
Nearby, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels had launched an attack from Lebanese territory against two villages near the Syrian town of Tal kalakh.

[An Nahar] Syrian opposition fighters launched from Lebanese territories an attack on Friday against two Alawite towns in Syria's Homs province, killing at least 5 people.
"At least five Syrians were killed in an attack by the fighting Islamic brigades on the border towns of Bahlouniyeh and al-Ghaida," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
"Among the dead were soldiers, border guards and national defense forces," it added.
The Observatory noted these towns, which are situated in the countryside of the Tal Kalakh village, are inhabited by members of the Alawite sect.
Intense festivities took place on Friday afternoon between the Syrian army, supported by national defense forces, and the Islamic brigades' fighting forces in the surroundings of al-Hosn and al-Zara villages in Tal Kalakh, according to the same source.
"Obtained information said Syrian forces took over the surroundings of the medieval al-Zara tower and that many people were killed in the battles."
One man was reportedly killed and several others were maimed as northern Lebanese towns came under attack earlier on Friday.
And on Thursday evening, heavy gunfire was heard in several towns in the northern city of Akkar as a result of the ongoing festivities.
