Arabia
Abaya made compulsory for Pakistani women pilgrims
[Dawn] Upon the directives of Saudi Authorities, Pak women cannot perform Hajj this year without wearing Abaya.
Just because Saoodi wimmin can vote in meaningless local elections and (one day) drive a car openly doesn't mean that they're going to extend these rights to other Muslim wimmin...
The Ministry of Religious Affairs took notice of Pak women pilgrims without Abaya and issued notices to the National Airline and Directorate of Hajj. The notice said that the airlines will face penalty of 5,000 Saudi Riyal and suspension of Hajj director if the condition of Abaya is not fulfilled.

The measures were taken after a flight carrying women pilgrims to Soddy Arabia yesterday without Abaya. Consequently Saudi Authorities urged Pakistain to follow the dress code for women pilgrims.

#1  If the women aren't encased in black potato sacks there's just no way to keep those Saudi menfolk under control and it's the women's responsibility for preventing such problems. Sort of like in New York City, where short skirts are to blame for r*pes (I saw that recently someplace.)

Roseanne Barr - Bankers should be beheaded
Remember when the Tea Party threatened America with its latent violence, proven when a couple of union thugs beat up a rally attendee? Good times, good times. Via RCP, we now hear the counterpoint from the Hollywood Left, as Roseanne Barr appeared on Russia Today to lay out her vision of American politics. It's not enough to occupy Wall Street -- Barr wants to bring back the guillotine and start using it to redistribute the wealth:

"Part of my platform is, of course, the guilty must be punished and that we no longer let our children see their guilty leaders getting away with murder. Because it teaches children, you know, that they don't have to have any morals as long as they have guns and are bullies and I don't think that's a good message," Barr told Russia Today (RT).

"I do say that I am in favor of the return of the guillotine and that is for the worst of the worst of the guilty.

"I first would allow the guilty bankers to pay, you know, the ability to pay back anything over $100 million [of] personal wealth because I believe in a maximum wage of $100 million. And if they are unable to live on that amount of that amount then they should, you know, go to the reeducation camps and if that doesn't help, then being beheaded," Barr said with a straight face.

Imagine if anyone had said anything remotely like this at a Tea Party rally about socialism and socialists, even in jest. And this isn't just some unknown provocateur -- Barr is one of the most successful entertainers and producers in Hollywood, or at least she was at one point in time.

If this was humor, the only part that was funny was the economics. I'm pretty sure ABC didn't pay her in hippie beads when she ruled the Nielsen charts in the 1980s and 1990s. Her sister filed a $70 million lawsuit for her share of the proceeds from the TV series Roseanne (thrown out for statute-of-limitations issues), which strongly suggests that Barr exceeded her own "maximum wage" limitation. Besides, it's always amusing to hear economic policy from someone who doesn't know the difference between "wages" and "wealth," even more so than when some political leaders can't tell the difference between "price" and "cost."

Just remember that when conservatives organize into grassroots movements, it's almost always about protecting their own property and individual liberty. When leftists decide to start grassroots movements, like OccupyWallStreet or Barr's example of leftist populism, it almost always involves seizure of property, threats of violence, and eventually re-education camps and the guillotine.
I say we start with the fat cow that spouted this communist bullshit.

#1  I think we should behead them too.

But for very different reasons.
And possibly in a metaphorical manner, not with an axe.

Punjab CM assures justice to Shahkot rape victim
[Dawn] The Chief Minister of Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday visited the home of a rape victim and assured the family that the culprits responsible for the crime will be punished, DawnNews reported.

Sharif also said that he wished the main culprit in the case had not been granted bail by the court.

Speaking to media, Sharif said that a committee had been set up to investigate the issue. He said that justice will be brought to the raped student.

He further stated that the main culprit is on bail until October 4, although he wished that the court had not allowed that. Sharif said that the girl wanted to study further and the government will be responsible for all of her educational expenses.

According to the details, the 16-year-old girl, a first-year student at a local college, was gang-raped in the Shahkot area of Punjab.

The police have locked away four alleged criminals involved in the act while the key culprit is on bail until October 4.

Iraq
Erosion of main pipeline stops Iraq’s oil exports through Turkey
KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraq’s oil exports through the main oil pipeline, carrying Iraqi crude through Turkey, has stopped entirely, due to leakage, caused by erosion of the of the main line close to Salahal-Din Province, a source at Iraq’s North Oil Company in Kirkuk reported on Thursday.

“Oil exports stopped from Kirkuk since Wednesday morning, across the Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline, because of a case of leakage of crude oil from the main line," the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency, noting that the "leakage happened at the limits of Shirqat township of the province of Salahal-Din."

He said that technicians were sent to the scene to replace the eroded part of the oil pipeline.

He pointed out that "the quantity produced from Kirkuk oil fields before the suspension of exports was up to 600,000 barrels per day, while the exported quantities reached between 400,000 to 450,000 barrels per day."

#4  I see leakage from corrosion quite often. Also from collapse, impacts, & other external trauma. But have yet to see leakage of a main line from erosion - wells can frequently produce sand along with the oil, and can 'sand-blast' holes in flowlines close to the wells, but sand is supposed to be removed before it reaches main pipelines, and if it does get there, it settles out in the line and plugs it up rather than eroding it, because the velocities are a lot less. Perhaps this is a translation issue.
Posted by: Glenmore || 10/03/2011 7:41 Comments || Top||

#5  I used to do a fair amount of non-destructive testing when I was in the construction biz.
I would generally see erosion at 90-degree bends.

I would think a high pressure oil pipeline would have very few 90-degree bends though.
Never really noticed it at lesser bends, but at the flow rate and pressure they are running, yeah, I guess it could. But like Tipover said, a little maintenance would go a long way on that.
Maybe they need British Petroleum to come back in.

#6  The pipeline is a prime example of why the Saudis are paying so many ex-pats so much money each month to maintain all of that very expensive military equipment that they have purchased over the years. Otherwise, it is junk within a few years with Arabs working on it.

Southeast Asia
Breast Slapping Boasts Bigger Breasts
In 2003, breast slapping was officially approved as a natural alternative to plastic surgery.
One beauty shop in Bangkok has been licensed to perform the non-surgical treatment and owner, Khemmikka Na Songkhla, better known as Khunying Tobnom, claims that proper application of the technique, which involves six ten-minute sessions, can be painful but effectively boost breast size by up to two inches.

Khunying is planning to reveal her technique to 10 people but at a high price. The going rate is 8-million Thai baht ($263,504) to teach the secrets of breast-slapping.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran supreme leader urges restraint over bank scam
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday called on politicians and the media to refrain from "making a fuss" over a $2.6 billion banking scam, state television reported.
Cheez, our Crony Socialist government can pee away that much before breakfast...
"Some people are seeking to use this (scam) as an excuse to bash the authorities," Khamenei said in televised comments.

"The media has covered the issue and that is fine, but they should not drag on... and to continue to make such a fuss and uproar (which) is not in the interests" of the country, Khamenei added.

On Monday, 11 lawmakers, including influential conservative MPs, wrote a letter to parliament speaker Ali Larijani requesting a probe into the conduct of the president's clique in the case, according to media reports.

They sought an investigation into "violations of the law committed by the president, his chief of staff, the president of the Central Bank and the economy minister," the reports added.

On Monday, Khamenei told critics to "let the officials do their job," while also calling on the authorities to "show no mercy to the saboteurs and the corrupt."

The remarks come as the huge scam, widely reported by the media since early September, has provoked hardline conservatives to sharply criticise the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Khamenei would have no problem at all selling Short Round down the river, but the bank fraud could whip up enough anger to bring down the Mad Mullahs™, and he can't have that.
The fraud, billed in the Iranian media as the country's "biggest-ever," apparently saw a private group accumulate $2.6 billion through forged letters of credit approved by half a dozen Iranian banks.

The controversy intensified when media opposed to Ahmadinejad published a letter attributed to his chief of staff and principal adviser, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, in which he reportedly asked the economy minister to facilitate the group's operations.

Iran postpones Ahmadinejad's ride into space
IRAN'S plans to send a live monkey into space have been postponed indefinitely, the country's top space official said, quoted today by the state television website.

"One cannot give a set date for this project and as soon as our nation's scientists announce the readiness (of the project) it will be announced," said Hamid Fazeli, head of Iran's Space Organisation said.

Fazeli had said in mid-June that a Kavoshgar-5 rocket would be launched "during the month of Mordad (July 23 to August 23) with a 285-kilogram capsule carrying a monkey to an altitude of 120 kilometres."

He gave no reason for the postponement.

"Our scientists are exerting continuous efforts on this project... our colleagues are busy with empirical studies and sub-system testing of this project so it is a success," he said.

In mid-March, Iran's space organisation announced the launch of the Kavoshgar-4 rocket carrying a test capsule designed to house the monkey.
