O'bama drains a pint, wins Irish praise
Downing a Guinness is a rite of passage for any visitor to Ireland, but too often the VIPs, including some U.S. presidents, disappoint the Emerald Isle.

Not President Barack Obama. He may be criticized for taking too long to make up his mind at times, but he didn't hesitate Monday when offered a pint of the dark brew. Obama downed it in four slurps and won cheers across Ireland for it.

"The president actually killed his pint! He gets my vote," said Christy O'Sullivan, "he's the first president I've actually seen drink the black stuff like he's not ashamed of something."

But on Monday, an American president finally savored his pint the way a local expects. Audiences watching the moment - deliciously drawn out by Obama for close to a minute - shouted encouragement at their TVs and cheered as he took a hearty swallow and polished it off. Mrs. Obama drank her half-pint, then got behind the bar herself and pulled two pints.
A minute? That's not much of a slam. Besides, O'bama is an elite and detests the little people. Why would he want to win their praise?
Obama even ended up with a bit of a frosty moustache, another trademark of tackling a creamy-headed stout.

"I tried one of these and I realized it tastes so much better here than it does in the states," he said. "What I realized was that you guys, you're keeping all the best stuff here."
Tasteless buttering up of the natives. Europeans like to brag about their wonderful beers but the truth is a hell of a lot of excellent beer is made in America these days. Wouldn't expect O'bama to know that, or broadcast it if he did.

Four NATO soldiers killed in Afghan bombing
Suicide bomber kills four civilians in bazaar near Jalalabad

KABUL/JALALABAD: A roadside bomb attack killed four NATO soldiers near Kabul,
May the knowledge they died to keep us safe bring comfort to those they left behind.
while a suicide bomber struck a crowded bazaar near Jalalabad on Monday, killing four civilians and wounding another 14 in a remote town in the east of the country.
The Taliban, like jihadis everywhere making friends the only way they know how.
In the first incident, a roadside bomb went off and killed four foreign soldiers in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.

"Four ISAF service members died following an improvised explosive device attack in eastern Afghanistan today," ISAF said. "It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities."

ISAF did not give further details of who was involved, what exactly happened or where it occurred, in line with its policy.

In the second incident, a suicide bomber struck a crowded Afghan bazaar on Monday, killing four civilians and wounding another 14 in a remote town in the east of the country. "Four civilians were martyred and another 14 were wounded," provincial governor's spokesman Faizanullah Pattan told AFP, adding that he did not know what the attacker's target had been.
Nor the age and mental capability of the suicide bomber...
There were no government offices or military patrols in the area where the incident happened in the small town of Najeel Khail in Alishing district of Laghman province, about 100 kilometres east of the capital Kabul. The explosives were strapped to the bomber's body, the spokesman said.
And the Taliban have not claimed the attack. No surprise.

Brit attack helicopters to be deployed to Libya
The Daily Telegraph has learned that Apache helicopters will fly into Libya from a Royal Navy warship, in a joint operation with the French. As many as 18 British and French helicopters will be deployed to support rebels trying to consolidate gains against Gaddafi's forces.

The helicopter operation -- expected to be supported by Special Forces troops -- will take the allies closer still to a full ground operation in Libya.

Whitehall officials said that later this week, the Apaches will begin flying missions in from HMS Ocean, a helicopter carrier in the Mediterranean.
That avoids certain ground deployment issues, but they still need people at/near the front to call in targets, don't they?
Their use was authorised by David Cameron at a meeting of the National Security Council after the Prime Minister asked military chiefs for new ways to increase the pressure on the Libyan regime.

"We are constantly looking for ways to intensify the diplomatic and military pressure on the Libyan regime," said a spokesman for Mr Cameron.

One of the helicopters' principal tasks will be to enforce a 16-mile buffer zone around the beseiged city of Misurata. Some semblance of normality has returned to the city since rebels captured the airport and attacked Libyan army artillery positions more than a week ago.

British military planners said the helicopters would help the rebels entrench their control over Misurata and deal a symbolic blow to Col Gaddafi.

"It is very important that we sustain that buffer zone to demonstrate the sense of normality that is building in Misurata now that it is no longer significantly under threat from Gaddafi," one source said.

The Apaches, which carry Hellfire missiles and 30mm cannons, will target mortar batteries, light military vehicles and individuals including snipers and commanders. The helicopters have been highly effective in Afghanistan, targeting Taliban leaders and foot-soldiers in Helmand.

HMS Ocean is currently carrying three Apaches, whose crews have been practising for the Libyan operation in Cyprus. Another helicopter will arrive in the area later this week, and two more are on standby in the UK.
A helicopter carrier and it has THREE copters? Sheesh...
As many as 12 Tiger and Gazelle helicopters will also fly from the BPC Tonnerre, a French carrier that sailed from Toulon this week.

The Anglo-French operation in Libya is now in its third month, with warplanes targeting Gaddafi's forces with bombs and missiles on a daily basis. Despite repeated claims that the regime is weakening, ministers are increasingly anxious about the rebels' lack of progress against loyalist forces.

The helicopters will help replace low-flying American gunships that were withdrawn from the operation in March by President Barack Obama, who arrives in London today for talks with Mr Cameron. Officials said that Britain and France will continue to press Mr Obama to commit more US forces to the Libyan operation, although the president remains reluctant.

Military experts said deploying helicopters will make the Nato campaign more effective, but not without risks.

"Attack helicopters can go lower and slower than fighter bombers and their missiles and cannon can be useful precision weapons. Although they are vulnerable they can take can take advantage of terrain in ways that fast jets cannot," said Benajmin Barry, a defence analyst at the International Institute of Strategic Studies.

Mr Cameron and President Barack Obama will make their strongest statement of support for democracy protests across the Middle East and North Africa on Tuesday. The two leaders will threaten military action as a last resort to regimes using violence against the protesters, in a notable shift in Mr Obama's position, who remained silent during the early weeks of the Arab Spring.

"We will stand with those who want to bring light into dark, support those who seek freedom in place of repression, aid those laying the building blocks of democracy," they wrote in a joint statement.

In a press conference on Monday, William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, and Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, singled out the "unacceptable" use of force by Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. The EU followed the US in imposing sanctions on him on Monday.

In terms of the relationship between Britain and America, Mrs Clinton joked: "If there were any closer alignment, we would worry about each other."

#1  A helicopter carrier and it has THREE copters? Sheesh...
At first blush,'Sheesh' seems about right, but please remember that over the past couple of years Britian has repeatedly cut their military forces' hardware, parking all the Harriers, serious talks on-going about reducing the size of the F-35 buy, the EADS A400M transport is on life support, so having only 3 helos available is probably just enough to keep the aircrew current, or perhaps provide minimal SAR coverage.
If any of our British cousins can shed more light, please chime in.

#2  Most of an LPH helicopters would be for transport. A dozen transport and 4 attack helos would be a good complement for a small LPH.

#4  Military experts said deploying helicopters will make the Nato campaign more effective, but not without risks.

Risks!?! Gee...do ya think? Do you really think the Q-Team didn't anticipate this platform and might have a stash of Hot-Shots? Hows bout just a simple Heavy cal. sniper fired at a static target. And if ya'll think that golden-pellet RPG in close proximity thing is just in the movies - it ain't. There are enormous risks to this sort of engagement even when there's a clearly defined 'Military' mission. But there's a good chance that this muddlefuck inchoate strategy of half-measures and symbolic gestures is gonna get the NATO boys kilt while some Diploshit tries to get the AU or some other dysfunctional organization to broker a deal.

Welcome to "Strategic Leadership of the 21st Century".

Yes, but is that the good news or the bad news?

#6  Yes, but is that the good news or the bad news?

Yes.

A chopper can be booking it at 160 knots doing a NAP of the earth (Near As Possible) and by the time you hear it and look up, it has passed you. The downside is, if the pilot blinks, he is dead if he does it in a canyon.
I was in the 101st and I trust the rotory aircraft to get in, hit the target and vanish without being seen more than sending fixed wing aircraft to do the job. There are risks, but they can be well managed with a trained crew.

#7  Geez, a NATO clusterfuck a couple months in, and they start rolling out the *promise* of Apaches. This feels more and more like the '99 Kosovo war, take two.

This is going to end with Russian peacekeepers occupying the oil terminals, isn't it?

#9  And the 'endgame' is.............?

Good (if rhetorical) question.

Officially it'd be whatever objective listed in the UN resolution is. Considering that they tend to be more elastic than a Russian gymnnast, it could be Lebanon all over again.

#10  And what is the ideology of the parties who the UK, etc seeks to defend? Remember what happened when Jimmah and Andrew Young thought it was smart to support mobs in iran? Onetime democracy is really dictatorship. Jimmah never learned that.

Gunbattle in Yemen as transition deal collapses
SANAA - Yemeni loyalist forces fought a gunbattle on Monday with opponents of entrenched President Ali Abdullah Saleh one day after he backed out of an accord for him to step down.

The clashes in Sanaa cast further dimmed prospects for a political solution to a three-month crisis in which youth-led demonstrators, inspired by protests that swept aside the leaders of Egypt and Tunisia, are demanding an end to nearly 33 years of Saleh rule.

“There is heavy gunfire and violent clashing between government forces and Sheikh (Sadiq) al-Ahmar’s guards,” a witness said, referring to a powerful tribal leader who has sided with the protesters.

One person was killed and 15 people were wounded, one of them a reporter of the state news agency Saba, witnesses said. The pro-opposition Suhail television said five of Ahmar’s guards were killed and 35 wounded.

The shooting, which shattered windows at Saba’s offices, followed the collapse of a transition deal mediated by Gulf neighbours that Saleh was to have signed on Sunday and would have given him immunity from prosecution, ensuring a dignified exit.

The U.S. embassy closed its consular section to the public for at least two days due to a “fluid security situation”, the mission said in a statement.

The government accused Ahmar’s men of firing on a school and the Saba building. Ahmar’s office said government forces opened fire when his guards prevented them from entering a school where Ahmar said loyalists were stockpiling weapons.

South of the capital, loyalist gunmen opened fire on the headquarters of the Islamist party Islah, the biggest member of Yemen’s opposition coalition, in the city of Ibb.

US judge denies bail for Florida imams
MIAMI: A US judge on Monday denied bail for a 76-year-old Florida imam and his son accused of sending $50,000 to support the Pakistani Taliban.
Good! One sensible judge! Clone that man!
Pakistan-born Hafiz Muhammed Sher Ali Khan, the head of one of Miami's leading mosques, and his son, Izhar Khan, who is also an imam at another south Florida mosque, were arrested on May 14. The two men were among six people, including three other family members of Hafiz Khan, indicted on charges that they conspired to provide money and support for the Taliban, which the United States considers a terrorist organisation.

The Khans, both US citizens, appeared in a federal court on Monday for a hearing attended by several dozen supporters from their mosques.
Boy howdy, makes you wonder if they really meant the pledge of allegiance at their citizenship ceremony...
Did they give up their Pakistani citizenship when they took American? So many people don't, nowadays. I have a friend whose son has Mexican citizenship through his father, Canadian citizenship by birth, and with both parents got American citizenship last year.

US couple pleads guilty in Hezbollah funding case
TOLEDO, Ohio — A married couple pleaded guilty Monday to charges that they planned to ship money to Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group listed as a terrorist organization by the United States. The plea deal will spare Hor and Amera Akl from potential life sentences.
Pity...
The couple planned for a year to send up to $1 million for Hezbollah, which the U.S. government lists as a terrorist organization and blames for numerous attacks on Israel, federal prosecutors said. An FBI informant provided them with $200,000 for the first shipment that was to be hidden in an SUV before they were arrested last June, the government said.

The Akls, dual citizens of the United States and Lebanon, both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Hor Akl also pleaded guilty to money laundering, bankruptcy fraud and perjury charges.

In exchange, prosecutors dropped an arson charge against the husband and wife that carried a mandatory 10-year sentence. They also dropped a money laundering charge against Mrs. Akl. Hor Akl now faces a sentence of a little more than seven years in prison, while his wife could receive up to four years. Both could have faced 30 years to life in prison if they would have been convicted on all charges at trial.

Sanford Schulman, an attorney for Amera Akl, said he wanted her to fight the charges, but understood why she agreed to plead guilty.

“I’d probably take the deal myself,” he said. “I don’t know if they caught the bad guy today, but they got what they wanted.”

The plea agreement required both to plead guilty. Hor Akl’s attorney, David Doughten, said it was a fair deal.

Investigators built the case using telephone recordings and an informant, said Justin Herdman, an assistant U.S. attorney.

Hor Akl traveled to Lebanon in March 2010 to arrange the delivery of money, he said. He returned to the United States claiming that he had met with Hezbollah officials, according to court documents. The Akls expected to make about $200,000 in fees to transfer of funds, Herdman said.

Both told U.S. District Judge James Carr in Toledo that they didn’t dispute any of the government’s allegations.

Amera Akl will be sentenced June 20, while a sentencing date has not been set for her husband. The couple, who have three children, remained free on bail after their pleas.

Geez fellas get it straight Hezbollah is as Iranian as the rug on your panty waist floor. Why does the press continually misrepresent the magnitude of the problem with moslem extremism?

I guess that would be giving George, Dick and Rummy too much credit wouldn't it?

Dual citizenship = Dual loyalty
(Or in this case no US loyalty.)
Maybe this is a good time for the US to rethink this policy.

Three LI men killed in clash with tribesmen
LANDIKOTAL: In a clash between Mangal Bagh led Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) and Zakha Khel volunteers in Zakha Khel areas on Monday, three LI men were killed while six volunteers of the Zakha Khel tribe sustained bullets injuries.

The LI fighters had reportedly tried to capture some of the posts in Soor Ghar and Alwayi, but the Zakha Khel fighters repulsed their attack, administration sources said.

The political administration and security forces had recently set up a free medical camp at the Mishtara Frontier Corps (FC) camp in Zakha Khel’s far flung areas to give an impression that the situation was under control in Zakha Khel Bazaar after the expulsion of banned LI fighters from the area, however the LI attackers still showed their presence in some parts of the area.

Tribal clashes kill five more in Kurram
PARACHINAR: Clashes between two tribal groups entered their third day in Lower Kurram Agency as five more people were killed and 13 injured in fresh fighting in parts of the agency, official sources said Monday.

The tribal groups of Khwar Kalay and Balishkhel villages in Sadda tehsil opened fire on each other with automatic weapons that resulted in the death of five people. The clashes between the two groups erupted on Saturday over a land and water dispute. Residents of these villages have started migrating to safer places.

On Sunday, nine persons were killed and several others injured, as the death toll of three days of fighting has mounted to 15. The situation in Balishkhel, Khwar Kalay, Shalozan, Bughdai and Luqmankhel is still tense, and the tribal people have demanded the government to take cogent measures to restore peace.

Naval chief says no security breach
KARACHI: Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir rejected on Monday the reports of "security breach" at the Pakistan Navy's airbase PNS Mehran that was attacked by a group of terrorists in Karachi on Sunday night, saying the attack on the airbase could not be termed "security lapse".
Oh absolutely your Admiralness, sir...
"Terrorists wanted to cause damage to the assets of the navy. And it was clear that they targeted naval forces," Noman Bashir told a news conference at the conclusion of the anti-terrorist operation at PNS Mehran on Monday.
The admiral at Pearl Harbor didn't keep his job, either...
To summarize: bad guys got onto the base although it was guarded, wreaked a great deal of havoc, and some got away. This is something other than a security breach. What, exactly, will be explained at a later time.

Naval air base siege ends
Round-up of the fight in case you missed it.
KARACHI: Security forces regained control of Pakistan Navy's airbase PNS Mehran at least 16 hours after a group of heavily armed terrorists sneaked into the naval facility, killing 10 personnel and wounding 15 others.

The terrorists, who laid siege to the naval base, fought a pitched gunbattle with the security forces that started after 10:30 pm on Sunday and continued until mid-Monday. The attackers also destroyed two US-built P-3C Orion aircraft worth $36 million each and set off explosions in some sensitive depots inside the base from which smoke billowed up the whole Sunday night.

"We have cleared the base. The operation is over and the base is now under our control," Pakistan Navy's spokesman Commodore Irfanul Haq said.

According to Interior Minister Rehman Malik, four to six Taliban terrorists, aging between 22 to 25 years, had entered the naval air base in Karachi on Sunday night from three points using two ladders and cutters.
Excellent perimeter security there boys...
It's not a security breach, it's not a security breach, it's not a...
"There are believed to have been four to six terrorists. Four are confirmed dead. Two are suspected to have run away," he said, adding that one of the attackers was believed to have blown himself up.
Presumably one of the dead ones.
Nevertheless, sources contradicted Malik's version, and maintained, "All the four terrorists were killed. None of them managed to flee." The sources said that two of them were gunned down during an exchange of fire while the two others blew themselves up.

Malik said the terrorists triggered a series of explosions and destroyed two surveillance aircraft P-3C Orion. Commodore Haq said the attackers, who climbed over the wall into the base, had besieged the base's hangar areas where naval jets were parked, adding that naval commandos managed to save other aircraft parked there.

Ten security personnel, including one navy officer, three navy firemen, three navy commandos, a sailor and two paramilitary soldiers, embraced martyrdom, Malik told a press briefing at the Sindh Chief Minister's House on Monday after the operation.
I imagine they were more displeased than embracing the martyrdom. Their families, too.
The minister further said that 17 foreigners, including 11 Chinese and 6 Americans, were rescued by naval commandos. The foreigners were there to give training to naval personnel about Orion planes.
That's good news.
Rockets, LMGs, machine guns, hand grenades and other sophisticated weapons were believed to be in possession of the terrorists.
That's a lot of weapons for four hard-boyz...
The sources said the four attackers, who had entered the base from Malir riverbed, gave tough time to security personnel. Reportedly, navy and army commandos engaged the terrorists in a gunfight while rangers officials stood at the outer cordon to prevent their escape. After the last terrorist blew himself up at around 9am, security forces made a thorough search of the area. Heavy contingents of police rushed to the spot but were not allowed to enter the base by naval authorities. Mediamen and rescuers were also kept outside.

Banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed the responsibility for the attack.

"It was revenge for the May 2 American raid that killed al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden," Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan told a foreign news agency by telephone from an undisclosed location. Police surgeon Hamid Pedhiar, who carried out autopsies on the four terrorists' bodies, said the bodies of two attackers, who detonated their suicide vests, were mutilated and beyond identification.

Attacks targeting Iraqi forces kill 2, injure 20
KIRKUK, Iraq — Two bomb blasts targeting security forces in different parts of Iraq Monday killed two people and wounded 20, underscoring Iraq’s instability, though the nation’s prime minister insisted that security forces have been mostly successful in curbing insurgent attacks.

Police said a car bomb killed two people and injured 10 in Kirkuk, a northern Iraqi city torn by ethnic tensions. Another bomb in Baghdad also wounded 10, including four Iraqi soldiers.

In Kirkuk, 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of the capital, police Col. Ghazi Mohammed Rashid said a car exploded as a security patrol was driving by. The blast killed two people who happened to be near the car when it blew up. Five police were among the 10 wounded.

A few hours later, the Baghdad car bomb exploded next to an army patrol in the northern Shiite neighborhood of Kazimiyah. A police officer and doctor at Kazimiyah hospital said six bystanders and four soldiers were wounded.

#1  Iraq is how big? Say, about as big as Texas? Something like that?
Full of Moslems, of course, but I hear it has so much Oil that you can get some simply by sticking a stick in the ground.

A country that big and you get 2 killed and 20 "injured"? ( and they were ALL Moslems).

2 ( count them) killed in a country that big. And that's news? It's obvious to me ( how about you?) that killing 2( count them) is not going to bring down the govt or impede progress to and from the local privy.

I would say that the opposition to the "security forces" was not up to strenuous exercise, wouldnt you? Maybe they are just laying around smoking the hookah most of the time. Cause their efforts arent very impressive. AND you get the suspicion that they arent very bold, daring and brave persons on a mean average. But then, they are Moslems.

Its their culture. Smoke a hookah, dont take chances or presume to be especially effective, pray five times a day, and then run away. Allahu Akbar.

AND down to the six bystanders out of the twenty, that means the other 14 didnt even come to the hospital for treatment. Cant win a war killing just 2 of the enemy in a country of how many million? The Moslem bomb makers seem to be rather lazy and unimaginative on the whole. They only wounded the soldiers and killed "bystanders". Yay team.
Well, I am sure Allah will be right on this one for HE is bountiful and just and compassionate and has a more stately nose than any infidel.

Malaysia aid ship ends sea attempt to Gaza
KUALA LUMPUR -- A Malaysian aid ship attempting to land in Gaza after being warned off by Israeli naval forces last week has been forced to abort its mission after engine trouble, activists said.

Matthias Chang, who is heading the mission for the Perdana Global Peace Foundation, told AFP on Monday that the MV Finch was now stuck six nautical miles from Egypt's El-Arish port.

"At about 5:30pm local time (0330 GMT), our vessel developed engine trouble and we lost our steering capability, so we had to stop our attempt to reach Gaza by sea," he said.
"Nice going, Moshe."
"Thanks, David."
"However, the Egyptian foreign minister has given his assurance that we will be allowed to unload our humanitarian cargo and that it will be taken by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency into Gaza," Chang said,
Unless it somehow disappears along the way. Egypt is pretty chaotic at the moment, after all.
adding that Egypt is bound by international law to lead the vessel to safety.

"Although we were not able to reach Gaza by sea, we have achieved our aim of breaking the Israeli embargo by breaching their protection zone last Monday and if the Egyptians deliver on their promise, we will have also achieved our aim of delivering aid to Gaza," Chang said.

Perdana Foundation officials said the MV Finch left Greece on May 11, carrying plastic pipes to help build new Qassam rockets restore the sewage system in Gaza.

However, Israeli naval forces fired warning shots at the vessel when it was in Israeli waters, about 400 metres (yards) from Gaza, and forced the ship into Egyptian waters.

Chang said the 12 activists and crew onboard the ship, had on Monday told Egyptian authorities to either allow the vessel to dock and unload its aid or they would carry on to Gaza by sea. As the Egyptians did not respond to the ultimatum, Chang said the ship left the waters off El-Arish, heading towards Israeli waters.

Malaysian journalist Alang Bendahara, who was also aboard the vessel, told AFP the aid ship was escorted by an Egyptian navy patrol vessel, which cautioned that Israel's naval forces could attack if they entered Israeli waters.

"The mood onboard the ship was very subdued as we were contemplating what would happen but it was clear that everyone was determined to continue so that we could get this much needed aid to Gaza," he said.

An official from the foundation Samsudin Hitam confirmed that Egypt has promised to allow the MV Finch to dock and unload its cargo on Tuesday.

#1  According to Malaysia's news agency, Bernama, the MV Finch has been disabled about a week. Their reporter on board complained that "the port authorities had no sent medical aid and clean water" and that the ship would run out of water soon.

Also, the leader of the "humanitarian mission" was on the third day of a hunger strike in protest of the Egyptians not granting port access.
