Back in the good old murderous Middle Ages, this is why the wealthy and powerful started having their own chapels, on their property, because it was so easy to assassinate people in a public church.
And of course shortly after that, it became a status symbol.

Senate investigators have found that private Afghan security forces hired to guard US bases in the 'Stan have ties to the Taliban, crooks & Iran. The report was adopted by the Senate Armed Service Committee unanimously.
The United States military has almost no independent information on the Afghans guarding the bases, who are employees of Afghan groups hired as subcontractors by Western firms awarded security contracts by the Pentagon. At one large American airbase in western Afghanistan, military personnel did not even know the names of the leaders of the Afghan groups providing base security, the investigators found. So they used the nicknames that the contractor was using -- Mr. White and Mr. Pink from "Reservoir Dogs," the 1992 gangster movie by Quentin Tarantino. Mr. Pink was later determined to be a "known Taliban" figure, they reported.
In another incident, the United States military bombed a house where it was believed that a Taliban leader was holding a meeting, only to discover later that the house was owned by an Afghan security contractor to the American military, who was meeting with his nephew -- the Taliban leader.

[Al Jazeera] Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai, the Afghan president, has inaugurated the first session of a peace council that he had set up last month to facilitate reconciliation with Taliban and other bands of Islamic bandidos.
In his inaugural speech on Thursday, which also happened to be the ninth anniversary of the US invasion, Karzai said a lot was expected of the council.
"The Afghan people in each province, district and village are expecting a lot from this peace council," he said.
"The high peace council is a source of hope for the Afghan people," he said, adding that the international community is supporting the panel.
Karzai has long called on anti-government forces to renounce violence, sever ties with Islamic snuffies and embrace the Afghan constitution.
However, The infamous However... questions are being raised about the composition of the council.
Al Jazeera's Sue Turton, reporting from the Afghan capital, Kabul, said the presence of several ex-Taliban fighters and warlords in the 70-member council has been criticised by rights groups.
"Human rights muscle are saying that the international community shouldn't be backing this high council, it should bring in people who know more about peace and about war," she said.
But close allies of Karzai have justified the council's make-up, saying these are the kind of people that understand what it takes to bring about a compromise.

SANA, Yemen Yemeni authorities announced on Thursday the arrest of seven suspects in the attack on the motorcade of the British embassys No. 2 all from an area in the capital that has become synonymous with militancy.
The neighborhood of Nuqum in Yemens capital of Sana not only plays host to the U.S. and British embassies but contains a sprawling slum on the eastern half of the city which security officials say is full of Islamist extremists with Al-Qaida connections.
A security official explained that police forces dont regularly patrol the slum for fear of getting killed and only occasionally conduct massive sweeps.
He added that wanted militants move freely through the neighborhood disguised as women in all encompassing cloaks. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of his personal safety.
Much of the area consists of shanty towns that have mushroomed in the shadow of the Nuqum mountain, creating a densely populated neighborhood of twisting, unpaved alleys winding between ramshackle buildings.
Only a few main roads cut through the area and one of these is the main route from the embassies to downtown Sana.
With embassies increasingly turning into impregnable fortresses, militants have shifted their focus to the armored SUVs in diplomatic motorcades, security officials say. Both recent attacks on British convoys, however, only inflicted light damage on the heavily protected vehicles.

(KUNA) -- A Mohammedanjugged in Britain used funds donated to a refugee camp to carry out two bombings in India to "get Dire Revenge" on Hindus, a court heard Thursday.
Mohammed Hanif Umerji Patel had a prominent role in setting up a refugee camp for Mohammedans made homeless during religious unrest in Surat, Gujarat, where rioting seems to be a traditional pastime India, in 1992.
An extradition hearing at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court was told that Patel and three others decided to use the funds donated to carry out two blasts in 1993.
An eight-year-old schoolgirl was killed and many other people injured during the two grenade attacks in Surat - the first on a busy bazaar and the second on a crowded railway platform. Patel, known as Tiger Hanif, was wanted by police around the world for 17 years before he was traced to a grocery store in Bolton, Lancashire, by Scotland Yard investigators earlier this year.
The Indian authorities want Patel, of Bolton, extradited to face allegations of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause an kaboom.
Prosecutor Clare Montgomery said: "This defendant took a prominent role in setting up a refugee camp for Mohammedan refugees.
"The refugee camp had a fund that was set up to collect donations and it was agreed by this defendant and three other witnesses that the fund would be employed to buy weapons." A witness statement of a co-conspirator, Mohmad Ghadliali, said that a meeting was called between himself, Patel, and two other men, when they decided to obtain weapons "for Dire Revenge", Ms Montgomery said. She said it was decided to carry out the first attack on January 27 1993 when a live grenade would be thrown into a busy market.
However, The infamous However... bombers aborted the plot when they saw police in the area.
The next day they returned to the site and successfully exploded the device, killing an eight-year-old girl who was passing through on her way home from school.
O brave, brave Lions of Islam, blowing up a little girl!
Ms Montgomery said a second attack was planned in April 1993 at a railway station which conspirators believed would cause the police to stop a planned Hindu rally.
"Once again, a live grenade exploded into the crowd - mercifully no-one was killed but there were a series of injuries," she said. Patel is also accused of helping one of the bombers escape police capture by providing him with money, a weapon and a passport. Up to 13 people were later jailed for between 10 and 20 years for the blasts. The hearing continues.

An unidentified armed robbery suspect, abandoned by his accomplices, was beaten and stabbed to death by a mob of food vendors and customers Thursday afternoon in Juarez, Chihuahua, according to Mexican news reports.
The lynching took place at the Parral barbeque restarant near the intersection of calles Benemérito de las Américas y Plutarco Elías Calles, when a group of four suspects attempted to hold up the restaurant.
As the suspects started to leave as it became apparent they were robbing the place, a crowd fell upon the last suspect and beat him to death. His other three accomplices escaped the crowd's wrath.
The owner said the crowd's reaction was a natural one and took place all at once.
This is the third such event in Juarez in three weeks, the last being a mob in the Villas de Santiago district Wednesday morning where a mob fell upon a burglary suspect and attempted to immolate him.
Mexican Federal agents rescued the suspect before the crowd could set fire to him.
Either way, he won't be robbing anyone else. Perfect reform method - mehbe decent Mexicans should step up its use.

All of which show remarkable success in reducing recidivism.
The ruling class in Mexico has refused the wishes of the people to re-institute the death penalty, even though the 'bad guys' obviously have no problem in using it.

this is what happens when you have no functioning police force or justice system.
it's the same in Kenya.
Nobody bothers calling the police who will just ask for bribes and do nothing anyway.
I, as a Western tourist, could have anybody killed I wanted in Kenya. All I have to do is walk down the main street in Nairobi and suddenly shout : Stop Thief - he took my mobile phone! and start running after the poor hapless victim.
Within 20 seconds people would stream from all around and kick that person to the ground and kill them before my eyes.
Wouldn't matter if they stole from me, or if I was mistaken, or if I was just a psychotic serial killer who wanted to strike in a novel way. they'd be dead.

Just as government derives its power from the 'consent of the governed', so does law and justice. When people perceive that the ruling class is unable or unwilling to provide justice, they start carrying it out themselves. That gets a response from the 'authorities' more so than the crime that provokes it, because they view it as a threat to their 'legitimacy' and power.

Not in Chihuahua, it hasn't and I suspect it hasn't because of the cops are every bit sick of the crime bullsh*t as the average Mexican citizen is. In the three crimes in the last three weeks, four in the last five weeks, not one citizen who has killed a criminal has been charged.

not one citizen who has killed a criminal has been charged.
That I know of...
Rinse the linked article through Google Translate and see if you don't get the same impression I got: that the uprising within the restaurant was sudden, completely spontaneous and absolutely merciless. Three of the bad guy's companeros cleared the area as soon as they realized what was about to happen.
Even after newly inaugurated Chihuahua state governor Cesar Duarte warned Monday that Chihuahuans should not take the law into their own hands, we have two such events in just three days immediately following that speech.
One wounded, one dead and no charges against anyone.

IIRC in one of those stories, 'suspected' leaders/motivators of the local 'committee of justice' left town to avoid contact with authorities.
Like all free men, they had every right to dodge process, and it's not quite the same thing as standing still and letting authorities charge you with a crime.
Authorities in the Islamic Republic of Netherlands improperly supplied nuclear equipment to the sanctioned Atomic Energy Organization Manhattan Project of Iran (AEOI), the Dutch Economic Affairs Ministry wrote in an October 4 letter obtained by The Jerusalem Post.
According to Economic Affairs Minister Maria van der Hoeven's letter, "That shipment contained a helium-leak detector, which was ordered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in line with its technical cooperation program with Iran, [but] was shipped to a banned recipient (AEOI)."
The UN agency's involvement in the delivery of EUsanctioned material raises thorny questions about the role of the IAEA in monitoring Iran's illicit proliferation efforts. Yeah, like how ElBaredei spent that $7M he got from Iran.

The US killed a senior aide to Osama bin Laden who served as a key link to al Qaeda, the Taliban, and other jihadist factions in Pakistan.
Mohammed Usman, a Pakistani citizen from Punjab province who was wanted for the murder of a policeman in 1997, was killed in one of the five Predator strikes this week in Pakistan's Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan, according to the Asia Times. Usman was a key member of Ilyas Kashmiri's Brigade 313, al Qaeda's military formation in Pakistan, and also helped to unite al Qaeda and multiple Pakistani terror groups.
Usman, who is also known as Chotu and Punjabi Usman, was a prominent member of Pakistan's jihadist circles during the 1990s, and went to Afghanistan after the US invasion following the 9/11 attacks in 2001.
The strike that killed Usman had apparently targeted high-profile Arabs, Uzbeks and Europeans in North Waziristan - American intelligence was unaware that he was in the area; he was collateral damage.
[Dawn] Interpol notified its members on Thursday that India has issued arrest warrants for five Pak citizens, including two army officers, for alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, an official said.
India asked Interpol to issue the so-called ''red corner notices'' for the five Paks, said R.K. Gaur, a front man for India's Central Bureau of Investigation.
The notices follow a probe by India's National Investigation Agency into the role of American David Coleman Headley, who pleaded guilty in the United States in March to participating in the planning of the attacks, which killed 166 people.
The five Paks wanted by India are Maj. Sameer Ali, Maj. Iqbal, Illyas Kashmiri, Abdur Rehman Hashim and Sajid Majid, Gaur said.
Iqbal was Headley's handler who arranged funds and training for him, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. It said Ali was also named by Headley.
Arrest warrants for the five were issued by a New Delhi court in July following a request by the National Investigation Agency.
In July, Indian Home Secretary G.K. Pillai accused Pakistain's Inter-Services Intelligence agency of orchestrating the Mumbai attacks. Pillai said the information, which Pakistain has denied, came from Headley's interrogation.
A court in Mumbai in May convicted and sentenced to death Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the only surviving gunman from the attacks. He has appealed his death sentence in the Mumbai High Court.
Kasab was one of 10 Paks who attacked two luxury hotels, a Jewish center and a busy train station in India's financial capital in November 2008.

[Haaretz] Israeli aircraft struck a car traveling south of Gazoo City late Thursday afternoon, wounding three people, Paleostinian medical officials and witnesses said.
According to Paleostinian witnesses, the Golf car was hit by one missile. Medical officials confirmed the three people injured in the strike were taken to a hospital in the centre of the Gazoo Strip.
The report was not confirmed by the Israel Defense Forces.
The reported strike came hours after Israeli aircraft hit targets belonging to Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, in an overnight raid on the enclave.
The Israeli raids were in retaliation for rocket attacks that had been launched from the salient on southern Israel, causing no injuries.
According to the Israeli military front man's office, a total of 165 rockets and mortars have been launched from the Gazoo Strip at Israel so far this year.
