REDELL COUNTY, N.C. -- A man was hit by a train and killed while looking for a legendary ghost train that is said to haunt the Bostian Bridge, near Buffalo Shoals Road in Iredell County. Now he can ride the Ghost Train...
A group of about 12 amateur ghost hunters were on the train trestle at about 2:45 a.m. Friday, according to the Iredell County Sheriffs Office. Next time, leave this to the professionals...
They were there in hopes of seeing a ghost train that crashed on the Bostian Bridge on Aug. 27, 1891. Legend has it that the ghost train returns to haunt the tracks on the anniversary of the crash, which killed 30 people and injured many others. Can ya see it?
Nah. Let's move out on that trestle...
A Norfolk Southern train rounded the bend and several people were caught on the trestle, deputies said. Most of them managed to get out of the trains way, but 29-year-old Christopher Kaiser was hit and killed, deputies said. Here it comes! Oooops, wait a min...
The trains operators made every attempt to stop and to warn the people, deputies said. Don't worry, folks! It's only a Ghost Tr...
The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Deputies said they are looking for additional witnesses who left the scene after the accident. See ya next year, folks. Well...most of you.

In China, many local (not express) trains have no toilet, just a hole in the floor straight onto the tracks. It serves as an effective deterrent to keep people away who don't belong there.
#4
Our trains also used to dump directly on the trackbed, EPA made them stop as it "Polluted the streams the trestles went over".
(when it rained the Poop washed away into whatever was near)
Standard toilet, not squatty, otherwise the same.

Bottom line, the average granola cant afford a pair of $200 eco-friendly denim jeans. Obviously, there needs to be a tax on the capitalist garment industry to subsidize the sustainable clothing sector. Also, governments will need to develop price control mechanisms to address the remaining cost inequity. This will also require an international fund to distribute wealth to the third world countries trying to establish labor unions. And maybe there should be a huge global conference for bureaucrats and activists to call attention to this injustice.

No first you have a luncheon in some exotic place to discuss holding a meeting in some other exotic location to discuss holding a pre-conference meeting where the final conference agenda and attendees are hand selected.
Then you have the actual conference (again in some exotic location - preferably somewhere with plenty of 5-star hotels and hookers) followed up by a couple of follow-up meetings.
Then you decide on a list of talking points to advance the agenda and issue that as the 'final report'.

Seriously...you don't know who she is? She was/is the lead singer for The Pretenders.
And, as was previously commented on, she doesn't look too bad for a 60 year old rocker with some hard miles on her. Not to mention that she's been rode hard and put away wet a few times. 8-)

Seriously, S.A.M., I never heard of her before. I also don't know who they are, though from your context I suppose they're some sort of musical group. Loud, probably.
The last CD I purchased (the only one in years) was Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream."
Just a guess, but I doubt these Pretenders would fit anywhere within my musical tastes.
YMMV.

The panorama from Gundaling Hills is especially beautiful in this afternoon. You can see the whole city, its surrounding orchards, and the crater of Mount Sibayak, a volcano that has been dormant for centuries. To the west is Mount Sinabung (another dormant volcano), while the Karo plains lie on the south.
#3
Hmmmm, dormant for centuries....well, guess what. On the geologic timescale, that's about the time of a sneeze. Or maybe half a one. Lots of volcano's of late. If this keeps up, with enough ash being ejected we may see some rather serious weather effects.
Ash is the major concern so far as long range effects of a volcano, the other dangers are primarily local in nature.

where are the UN scientists to add up all the carbon emissions?
I bet it gives off the carbon of 3000 Australias, making all our expensive efforts at carbon reduction futile, meaningless waste of money. But you can't hobble the "rich" world and empower the third world by blaming a volcano.... no black balloons for you
Hope the supervolcano goes off and reduces the global population down to say 100 million. That is enough for sure. Then if we all agree to just have 2 kids each the world will be a much nicer place.
After crunching through the data for 100,000 hours of processing time per run, the model returned an estimate of the motion of both large tectonic plates and smaller microplatesincluding their speed and direction. The results were remarkably close to observed plate movements.
In fact, the investigators discovered that anomalous rapid motion of microplates emerged from the global simulations. "In the western Pacific," Gurnis says, "we have some of the most rapid tectonic motions seen anywhere on Earth, in a process called 'trench rollback.' For the first time, we found that these small-scale tectonic motions emerged from the global models, opening a new frontier in geophysics."
One surprising result from the model relates to the energy released from plates in earthquake zones. "It had been thought that the majority of energy associated with plate tectonics is released when plates bend, but it turns out that's much less important than previously thought," Gurnis says. "Instead, we found that much of the energy dissipation occurs in the earth's deep interior. We never saw this when we looked on smaller scales."

In the new model, the researchers were able to resolve the largest fault zones, creating a mesh with a resolution of about one kilometer near the plate boundaries. Included in the simulation were seismological data as well as data pertaining to the temperature of the rocks, their density, and their viscosityor how strong or weak the rocks are, which affects how easily they deform. That deformation is nonlinearwith simple changes producing unexpected and complex effects.
"Normally, when you hit a baseball with a bat, the properties of the bat don't changeit won't turn to Silly Putty. In the earth, the properties do change, which creates an exciting computational problem," says Gurnis. "If the system is too nonlinear, the earth becomes too mushy; if it's not nonlinear enough, plates won't move. We need to hit the 'sweet spot.'"

[Pak Daily Times] Floodwaters made another break on Saturday in the levee protecting Thatta city, as thousands of residents fled for high ground and left the city nearly empty.
Both sides of the area's main road were crowded with people from Thatta and nearby flooded villages fleeing the floodwaters. Many had spent the night sleeping out in the open.
Hadi Bakhsh Kalhoro, the Thatta disaster management official, said more than 175,000 people had left the city, leaving few behind.
Some are heading for nearby towns or cities, he said, with thousands also headed for the high ground of an ancient graveyard.
He said the latest levee breach had happened early on Saturday and would worsen the flooding situation.
Protest: Flood victims blocked a road in Thatta to protest the shortage of aid, most of which is randomly thrown from trucks into crowds of needy people.
"The people who come here to give us food treat us like beggars. They just throw the food. It is humiliating," said 80-year-old Karima, who uses only one name. She was living in the graveyard with more than two dozen relatives.
The floods also displaced thousands of minority Hindus in Sindh. About 3,000 were living at a centuries-old Hindu temple inside the sprawling graveyard.
Meanwhile, authorities have been battling for days to save Shahdadkot, raising an embankment several kilometres long as the water has crept higher.

Tepid? It's that good?
[Pak Daily Times] Americans are giving a paltry amount for relief efforts in Pakistan compared to other overseas disasters. They were more than 40 times more generous for the Haiti earthquake. Perhaps because "death to America" demonstrations aren't very common in Haiti.
Reasons include the slow-motion nature of the calamity, relatively scant TV coverage, and - unmistakably - the fact that Pakistan is viewed warily by many Americans. Well, call me "mean spirited", but I just have a hard time with paying for a local Rage Boy's nice new tent...
No disasters are alike. Yet a month into Pakistan's flood catastrophe, with 8 million people in dire need and a fifth of its territory affected, the donation comparisons are startling.
InterAction, an umbrella group for US relief agencies active abroad, says its affiliates have raised about $12 million thus far for Pakistan, compared to more than $500 million at the same stage of the Haiti earthquake relief effort earlier this year. The American Red Cross, traditionally the biggest recipient of disaster relief donations, has collected about $2 million for Pakistan and is dipping into a contingency fund to support its work there. At the same stage, it had raised about $100 million in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, more than $670 million for Hurricane Katrina and about $230 million for the Haiti quake.
"People find it complicated to understand our relationship with Pakistan - how the government works, who to trust," said Stacy Palmer, editor of the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
"It was easier to look at a place like Haiti and know a quick response was needed," she said.

At a party last night. A good friend is an American Red Cross official. The RC is about tapped out in its international relief efforts. Haiti took a lot, and the RC is NOT getting much in the way of donations for Pakistan.
One thing she said that stuck with me: floods (in her experience) always engender fewer donations than earthquakes and hurricanes. A flood is a slow-motion disaster so people don't see the problem as quickly or as well as they do with an earthquake.
She then noted that middle America doesn't seem to be well disposed towards Pakistan (Ed. really?). Many Americans see Pakistan as an enemy and as a corrupt state. Combine these facts and you have an explanation for why the money isn't flowing in.

Well, considering the hatred they gave us after we helped them during their last disaster (earthquake), most Americans figure our aid is unwanted. F--- 'em seems to be a justified attitude.
Go grub money off the Saudis and other rich Mohammedans. Its your own religion's fault they don't give money - Mohammedans do not have charity that Christians do. Muslims figure Allah did it to you because you deserved it. So, Muslims, suffer the evils of your false god and his paedophile prophet. Peace be upon you - the peace of the rotting dead bodies.

token australian would like to say: me too. Not giving them a cent. Also, I totally understand why the US would not donate - you guys are suffering baad economic woes.
Plus I don't seem to recall Pakistan sending any aid for Hurricane Katrina...
Nor the bushfire victims in Victoria
I do remember Islamist fanatics blowing up hotels in Mumbai though.
so why should I care about them now? It's the cradle of Islamofascism.
They know they live in a flood zone. If they spent less time banging their heads on the ground worshipping Alan and more time digging drainage systems, building dams and dykes and levies they would not be in this mess now.
AND further they know they live in an earthquake zone, so start building to code. Next magnitude 7.8 to hit i'm not sending a dollar then either.
#7
AND further to that, they know they are prone to the odd famine - stop having 6, 7, 8 or 9 children. Stop at 2 please, there is too much pollution on the planet and too many people.
I'm not donating next time you can't feed the hungry mouths you have created.
Also, memo to Pakistan: marrying your cousins is a dumb idea.
[Pak Daily Times] Three people, including two children, have been killed and 40 others injured in an earthquake which struck Iran's biggest desert, Dasht-e Kavir, state television reported on Saturday. The 5.9 magnitude quake struck on Friday south of the northern city of Damghan. In a separate report, the state television website quoted secretary general of Iran Red Crescent, Zaher Rostani, as saying that an elderly woman was also among those killed in the quake. The website said six villages near Damghan were damaged in the quake which was about 278 kilometres (167 miles) east of Tehran. The tremor, which struck at 11:53 pm (1923 GMT) Friday, was also felt in the capital Tehran. Iran sits astride several major fault lines in the Earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating. The worst in recent times was a 6.3 magnitude quake which hit the southern city of Bam in December 2003, killing 31,000 people, about a quarter of its population, and destroying the city's ancient mud-built citadel.
These people are not taking the hint: Allah is not pleased with their behaviour. Perhaps if they stopped working on nuclear bombs and supporting covert wars against Iraq and Israel, the ground would stop trying to shake them off.

[Iran Press] Helicopter crash in Venezuela has killed ten members of the country's National Guard who were on a mission to track drug traffickers near the Colombian border.
The crash took place in western Apure State near the Colombian border on Friday as three officers along with seven soldiers were taking off on a counter-narcotics mission.
"Three officers and seven soldiers belonging to the Bolivarian National Guard force died late Friday in an accident involving a helicopter... that was search for narcotics traffickers," Commander General Luis Alfredo Dominguez was quoted by the state news service AVN.
The cause of the accident, which occurred near the town of Buena Vista in Apure, remains unknown.
"These citizens were killed in the line of duty, in fact, we have now captured one of the people we were looking for," Dominguez said.
Venezuela lies on the main route that carries Colombian cocaine destined for Europe and the United States.

Muammar Gaddafi arrived in Rome on Sunday as Italy prepares to mark the second anniversary of a friendship treaty signed between them and Libya.
Gaddafi landed with his customary following of female bodyguards, Arabian thoroughbreds and his Bedouin tent, the proposed location of which has been the subject of much debate.
As usual and by design.
Gaddafi and Berlusconi will attend ceremonies on Monday to mark the anniversary and underscore strengthening relations. Gaddafi will also attend conferences, exhibitions, and meet with with Italian business leaders.
Gaddafi and his posse retinue are expected to entertain pedestrians with "spontaneous" walks round Romes city centre that amused the locals the last time he was in town. The street performer Libyan leader will also stage a repeat of the remarkable event of his last visit, when 200 attractive women recruited by an agency were invited to a villa and lectured on Islam by the ringmaster Libyan leader himself.
The women, who had come expecting a party and lavish gifts, were given copies of the Koran and a book of demented proverbs sayings by Chairman Gaddafi, as well as a 50-euro note.
"This has been your host, Muammar - thank you for playing Camel For A Day! You've all been great sports. Let's give them a big round of applause, folks."
This time, the guests have been warned they will be attending "an important project of integration between two peoples adhering to different traditions and religious beliefs."
Remember to bring some caffeine and something to doodle on.
Under the treaty signed two years ago, Italy offered a formal apology and financial compensation for the hardships suffered by Libyans during the colonial era. In return, Gaddafi promised to halt the waves of illegal migrants. This led to a series of bilateral investments estimated at 40 billion euros. Much of that money has come from Gaddafi, the main recipient of the countrys oil wealth. Over the past two years, the Crackpot Colonel has acquired stakes in many Italian companies, and he's now the fifth-biggest shareholder on the Milan stock exchange.
"Gaddafi's purchases have been guided by Berlusconi himself," said La Repubblica's Livini. "Nowhere is this more the case than with Unicredit," he added, referring to the hugely influential bank. Livini says these investments allow him to play a part in the management of numerous companies, including Il Corriere della Sera.
Meanwhile, Italy is now Libya's main trade partner, and Italian firms have have secured advantageous contracts in Libyas transport sector and in the development of natural resources. But the next step of the alliance, selling Italian arms to Libya, is likely to prove more dangerous controversial.
[Pak Daily Times] Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid Punjab President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said that Pakistan is caught amid unprecedented disasters because of the rulers' wrongdoings and the nation should pray to God for mercy in these testing times. Or, maybe, Allah is displeased with dicks like Chaudhry...
He was talking to a delegation of the Dawat-e-Islami on Saturday. The PML-Q leader said that the recent floods had brought unprecedented miseries and hardships for over 20 million Pakistanis, who had lost everything, including their homes, cattle, valuables and loved ones.

The white tag cloud by a white for whites to celebrate our many names:
Like white on rice. Whitey. White chocolate. Snow bunnies. Crackers. Honkies. Hicks. Rednecks. Caucasians. Uncolored folks. Not of Hispanic, black or Asian origin. Limited to one check box on forms under race. The people unable to use the N word without unleashing a sh78storm. The girls white guys often try to hook up with until they can date a more "exotic" minority who supposedly are more docile, prettier, and cook better. Round eye. Pale face. Albino. Gwailo. Don Imus. Laura Schlessinger. Gringo/gringas. You know what Im talking about, cause you've heard them all before, too, Im guessing.
Oh, I am even allowed as a white to address specifically other whites without being racist?
My favorite, it read "A niece of Martin Luther King, Alveda, also assisted this overwhelmingly white."
I made a comment complimenting their erudition ;-) (never approved, of course), now it reads "A niece of Martin Luther King, Alveda, also addressed this overwhelmingly white assistance."
RICHMOND, Calif.California officials are outfitting preschoolers in Contra Costa County with tracking devices they say will save staff time and money. Getting them ready for the new Progressive America - where everyone will have to wear a tracking device.
The system was introduced Tuesday. When at the school, students will wear a jersey that has a small radio frequency tag. The tag will send signals to sensors that help track children's whereabouts, attendance and even whether they've eaten or not. How often do they take attendance in CA? How the heck can a RFID tag tell if a student has eaten? And what business is it of the schools anyway? Will a lunchroom monitor force-feed little Jenny the "Chef's Surprise" lunch if she doesn't eat enough of it?
School officials say it will free up teachers and administrators who previously had to note on paper files when a child was absent or had eaten. The fact that you have administrators and teachers walking around noting the location of each student and how much the've eaten give a broad hint for another cost-cutting move - but the Teachers mafia union might not like it.
It cost $50,000 and was paid by a federal grant.

You'd hate to have a teacher take roll, after all. That's two minutes of work. Save who money? What teachers will they eliminate to save two minutes a day? Looks like they simply have a cost of new technology instead.
Who'd allow their kids to become slaves so their kids don't have to answer "here". Sheesh.
And who'd actually believe that tracking devices, no doubt made in China, would actually be reliable enough to use more than a month.

I lived in Richmond, CA for years: it's an urban abyss. This won't work. Nothing will work except burning at city completely down and turning it back into productive farmland.
#9
So how exactly will this save time and money? Will teachers and administrators take a pay cut because they no longer have to do the heavy lifting of taking attendance or announcing lunch? And teacher's unions wonder why people think they're a bunch of overpaid, lazy incompetents.
Or could it be to get young Johnny and Janey used to being electronically monitored? It's not so bad, right, kids? Right, mom and dad? By the time you're 25 or 26, you won't even notice. And it's for your own good.
Trust us...
#12
saw this on the news... teachers claim that monitoring the kids in the halls between activities and on the playground is taking a toll on them. district claims that by not having having to hire staff to monitor the halls and playground, they can save $$$.
total boondoggle. the district is not going to downsize the positions filled now by hall staff and playground monitors. also very bad idea to rely on the devices to ensure kids are ok. you can see on the screen that johnny and billy are on the playground, but no idea if they are hitting each other or hurt.
some asshat from the school praised the idea that parents could check out their kids using the touch screen without having to interact with staff -- as a convenience parents would appreciate.
big WTF
