Five US soldiers killed in fresh Afghan violence
KABUL: Five US soldiers were killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday, NATO said. "Four soldiers were killed in eastern Afghanistan." NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said. "The fifth died in an insurgent attack in the south of the country, where the insurgency is at its fiercest," it said in a separate statement.

The deaths occurred, a day after eight NATO troops were killed in bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan. French military officials said on Tuesday that a soldier serving in Afghanistan was killed when the armoured vehicle he was travelling in, tumbled into a ravine.

The United States is bearing the greatest burden, losing 1,267 soldiers since the war began in late 2001.

Nine Allar Dal militants held in Shariatpur
Apparently they didn't rate a cross-fire or a shoot-out ...
Police arrested nine suspected members of banned militant outfit Allar Dal in Shariatpur Zila Stadium area on Monday evening.

The law enforcers seized Leaflets, a training manual for militants and a diary containing guidelines to implement the organisation's motto from the arrestees.

Acting on a tip-off, law enforcers cordoned the southern part of the stadium at around 7:00pm and arrested the nine while they were holding a meeting.

BREAKING NEWS: Gunman Holds 1 Hostage in Maryland--UPDATED: It's Over
30 Minutes ago

Writing a different lead...

Three people held hostage instead of just one, one wounded, the bad guy.

More here.

Police are monitoring a hostage situation as an unidentified gunman described as "of Asian descent" entered the Discovery Channel Building in Silver Springs, Maryland firing at least one shot, according to news reports.

Police say the suspect is also holding what appears to be an explosive device in the lobby of the building.

The assault began just after 1300 hrs when the suspect entered the building after firing one shot from a firearm.

It is uncertain what the demands of the suspect is. News reports say portions of the building have been evacuated including a child care center.

#1  I think this is the first instance of a lone nut terrorist having his own domain. (No, I won't link it, and apparently it's collapsed under the load anyway).

#2  Some reports have him an environmental wacko, either objecting to the show "Whale Wars", or:

"A note posted online July 18 issues a list of demands to the Discovery Channel, saying the station "MUST broadcast to the world their commitment to save the planet." It lists 11 demands about airing shows that would promote curbing the planet's population growth, finding solutions for global warming and dismantling "the dangerous US world economy."

"All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions," it reads.

"In those programs' places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it."

The manifesto was published on savetheplanetprotest.com. The site is registered to James Lee, who gave a post office box in Canada as his address. There is no confirmation from authorities that the Web site has anything to do with the current situation at Discovery."

#7  Someone has already noted that the nut frequently refers to Thomas Malthus, and that rang a bell.

John P. Holdren is adviser to Obama for Science and Technology, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology (PCAST).

A search of Holdren's book, ECOSCIENCE: POPULATION, & RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENT reveals that Holdren cited "Thomas Malthus" writings about overpopulation on pages: 379, 731, 741, 742, 743, 791, 792, 797, 800, 801, 878, 889, 898, 950, 1017.

So apparently, the two of them have something in common.

#9  A different official, who spoke on condition of anonymity for the same reason, said Lee previously protested outside the building, where he was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct in February 2008, according to court records.

Police reports indicate he paid homeless people to join his protest and carry signs outside the building. He gave one individual $1,000 for what he considered a prize winning essay.

At one point, a crowd of more than 100 people gathered around Lee, who referred to money as "just trash" and began throwing fistfuls of it into the air.

At the trial, The Gazette of Montgomery County reported, he said he began working to save the planet after being laid off from his job in San Diego. He said he was inspired by "Ishmael," a novel by environmentalist Daniel Quinn and by former Vice President Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth."

#18  His Manifesto which Drudge Report has a link to. Sounds stragely like the agenda for Obama's EPA.

The Discovery Channel MUST broadcast to the world their commitment to save the planet and to do the following IMMEDIATELY:

1. The Discovery Channel and it's affiliate channels MUST have daily television programs at prime time slots based on Daniel Quinn's "My Ishmael" pages 207-212 where solutions to save the planet would be done in the same way as the Industrial Revolution was done, by people building on each other's inventive ideas. Focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution. A game show format contest would be in order. Perhaps also forums of leading scientists who understand and agree with the
Malthus-Darwin science and the problem of human overpopulation. Do both. Do all until something
WORKS and the natural world starts improving and human civilization building STOPS and is
reversed! MAKE IT INTERESTING SO PEOPLE WATCH AND APPLY SOLUTIONS!!!!
2. All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. In those programs' places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it.
3. All programs promoting War and the technology behind those must cease. There is no sense in
advertising weapons of mass-destruction anymore. Instead, talk about ways to disassemble civilization and concentrate the message in finding SOLUTIONS to solving global military mechanized conflict.
Again, solutions solutions instead of just repeating the same old wars with newer weapons. Also, keep out the fraudulent peace movements. They are liars and fakes and had no real intention of ending the wars. ALL OF THEM ARE FAKE! On one hand, they claim they want the wars to end, on the other, they are demanding the human population increase. World War II had 2 Billion humans and after that war, the people decided that tripling the population would assure peace. WTF??? STUPIDITY! MORE HUMANS EQUALS MORE WAR!
4. Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is. That, and all its disgusting religious-cultural roots and greed. Broadcast this message until the pollution in the planet is reversed and the human population goes down! This is your obligation. If you think it isn't, then get hell off the planet! Breathe Oil! It is the
moral obligation of everyone living otherwise what good are they??
5. Immigration: Programs must be developed to find solutions to stopping ALL immigration pollution and the anchor baby filth that follows that. Find solutions to stopping it. Call for people in the world to develop solutions to stop it completely and permanently. Find solutions FOR these countries so they stop sending their breeding populations to the US and the world to seek jobs and therefore breed more unwanted pollution babies. FIND SOLUTIONS FOR THEM TO STOP THEIR HUMAN GROWTH AND THE EXPORTATION OF THAT DISGUSTING FILTH! (The first world is feeding the population growth of the Third World and those human families are going to where the food is! They must stop procreating new humans looking for nonexistant jobs!)
6. Find solutions for Global Warming, Automotive pollution, International Trade, factory pollution, and the whole blasted human economy. Find ways so that people don't build more housing pollution which destroys the environment to make way for more human filth! Find solutions so that people stop breeding as well as stopping using Oil in order to REVERSE Global warming and the destruction of the planet!
7. Develop shows that mention the Malthusian sciences about how food production leads to the
overpopulation of the Human race. Talk about Evolution. Talk about Malthus and Darwin until it sinks into the stupid people's brains until they get it!!
8. Saving the Planet means saving what's left of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human
population. That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies!
You're the media, you can reach enough people. It's your resposibility because you reach so many
minds!!!
9. Develop shows that will correct and dismantle the dangerous US world economy. Find solutions for their disasterous Ponzi-Casino economy before they take the world to another nuclear war.
10. Stop all shows glorifying human birthing on all your channels and on TLC. Stop Future Weapons
shows or replace the dialogue condemning the people behind these developments so that the shows become exposes rather than advertisements of Arms sales and development!
11. You're also going to find solutions for unemployment and housing. All these unemployed people makes me think the US is headed toward more war.
Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what's left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture. For every human born, ACRES of wildlife forests must be turned into farmland in order to feed that new
addition over the course of 60 to 100 YEARS of that new human's lifespan! THIS IS AT THE
EXPENSE OF THE FOREST CREATURES!!!! All human procreation and farming must cease!
It is the responsiblity of everyone to preserve the planet they live on by not breeding any more children who will continue their filthy practices. Children represent FUTURE catastrophic pollution whereas their parents are current pollution. NO MORE BABIES! Population growth is a real crisis. Even one child born in the US will use 30 to a thousand times more resources than a Third World child. It's like a
couple are having 30 babies even though it's just one! If the US goes in this direction maybe other countries will too!
Also, war must be halted. Not because it's morally wrong, but because of the catastrophic environmental damage modern weapons cause to other creatures. FIND SOLUTIONS JUST LIKE THE BOOK SAYS!
Humans are supposed to be inventive. INVENT, DAMN YOU!!
The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not
stupify the people into destroying the world. Not encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans.
Saving the environment and the remaning species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels.

The humans? The planet does not need humans.

You MUST KNOW the human population is behind all the pollution and problems in the world, and
YET you encourage the exact opposite instead of discouraging human growth and procreation. Surely
you MUST ALREADY KNOW this!
I want Discovery Communications to broadcast on their channels to the world their new program lineup and I want proof they are doing so. I want the new shows started by asking the public for inventive solution ideas to save the planet and the remaining wildlife on it.
These are the demands and sayings of Lee.

#19  Malthus is one of the most widely cited people in western scholarship and anyone at all who has an interest in population issues would be familiar with him.

Malthus was the guy who, back in the 1800s said we were all doomed. Kinda sorta the Paul Ehrlich of his day. Certainly a famous name, but it is a big leap from there to being one of the most widely cited people in Western scholarship.

And yes, Holdren is a nutjob, even without mention of Malthus.

#25  No, Steve, Malthus was not some guy who said we were all doomed and he was nothing like Paul Ehrlich.
He was an Anglican clergyman who opposed the pie-in-the-sky utopianism of his day, a utopianism that was one of the bedrocks of Marxism. Malthus did not advocate war and pestilence as a check on population, he merely stated that they were an inevitable outcome of over-population.
Marx and Engels condemned Malthus. Engels called Malthus's hypothesis "...the crudest, most barbarous theory that ever existed, a system of despair which struck down all those beautiful phrases about love thy neighbour and world citizenship."
Malthus comes up in any discussion of population or environmental policy and was a strong influence on Keynsian economics among many other ideas, so I will stand by my statement that he was one of the most important intellectuals of the modern era.

#26  Will the MSM report "Left-wing radical environmental extremist terrorizes hostages...? Will Katie Couric, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and Chris Matthews mention this? Somehow I doubt it. Instead they will probably call for an investigation of the police who did the shooting. And they will call for a ban on guns. I know that is not rational and doesn't reflect the reality of the story. That never bothered them in the past.

#29  Maggie Flater4451: There is a big difference in appreciating the value of Malthus theories in context to their time, however, both this nut and Holdren were of a similar mindset to Ehrlich. That *government* should force people to not have children through sterilization and fertility reduction.

The extreme of this was seen at a "scientific" meeting in Texas, where a "world renowned ecologist", Dr. Eric R. Pianka proposed that a massive plague of airborne ebola, wiping out 90% of humanity, would be a *good* thing, and his colleagues gave him a standing ovation.

Later he received more applause from a banquet hall filled with more than 400 people when the president of the Texas Academy of Science presented him with a plaque naming him 2006 Distinguished Texas Scientist.

This is wrong, and evil by the purest, most unequivocal definition of evil. And such people are in the Obama administration.

This is about the closest thing to the pride, arrogance, and viciousness one would expect from fallen angels, not human beings.

2 Yemenis won't face U.S. charges
U.S. officials announced Tuesday that two Yemenis arrested in Amsterdam after a flight from Chicago will not face charges in this country, but experts said the case exposed the strengths and weaknesses of U.S. aviation security.
'Strengths'? Did the 'experts' find any?
Department of Homeland Security officials, who allowed the men to go on their way despite suspicious circumstances, concluded that the system worked.
That's just an idiotic statement to make as one can see from the rest of the story. There are far too many coincidences, mistakes, and happen-stances even if this wasn't a dry run for a terror bombing in the near future.
It is useful to help the enemy think one is blinder and more stupid than is the case. It causes them to be less careful and less creative in their plans.
Bags containing strange items -- including a cellphone taped to a bottle of Pepto-Bismol -- were scrutinized, and the men were monitored as they continued their trip, officials said.

But counter-terrorism experts said U.S. authorities should have taken more time in searching and questioning the men, one of whom was in this country on an expired visa, a law enforcement source said. That in itself would be a crime.

The system worked? DHS would claim the system worked while the plane was going down. They would spin it that the plane had not yet crashed. Why don't they get someone in there to head up DHS who knows something about security instead of some political pogue? How about ex-military? Police? Border patrol?

Sniper kills U.S. soldier in Tikrit
SALAH AL-DIN / Aswat al-Iraq: A sniper killed a U.S. soldier in central Tikrit on Tuesday, raising the U.S. fatalities in August to four soldiers, a source from the Salah al-Din police department said.

“The incident occurred during the visit of the U.S. command in Salah el-Din to the police station in central Tikrit on the occasion of the end of U.S. combat troops’ mission in Iraq,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The death has brought to 4417 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, including 47 in 2010.

#1  American patrols have always been fired upon there. Unfortunately this type of incident will bcome commonplace as US troops move about Iraq. The enemy is still there and now can be assured that an American combat offensive against them will not take place. Tikrit should have been destroyed years ago.

#2  Combat is over now. The troops will be used for target practice by our enemies with no repercussions. We can now call our military, "blue helmets".

#3  Where do these snipers come from?

I know Bosnian jihadists like Juda the sniper have been recruited to fight US forces in Iraq and reports of Chechen snipers and fighters battling US lead forces also in Afghanistan.

Bomb explodes near U.S. convoy in Nassiriya
THI-QAR / Aswat al-Iraq: One U.S. army vehicle was damaged on Tuesday when a bomb exploded targeting a U.S. convoy in southern Nassiriya, according to the media spokesman of the U.S. army.

"A logistic support convoy was attacked early Tuesday (Aug. 31) by a bomb blast on the highway between Thi-Qar and Basra in southern Nassiriya," Major Alan Brown told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

"The explosion damaged one of the convoy's vehicles," he added, without giving further details.

#1  About 3,000 people joined a rally in Gaza to celebrate the attack. Hamas military wing spokesman Abu Obeida was among them and told The Associated Press: "The Qassam Brigades announces its full responsibility for the heroic operation in Hebron."

I have no pity for what is soon to happen to these "people"...

They danced in the streets following 9/11 as well. Slay them ALL! The sooner the better.

#5  when they had their little rally would have been a real god time for a missile strike.

#6  Barak added that the attack "is likely an attempt by the low-life terrorists to prevent the diplomatic process and to hurt the chances of the talks opening in Washington.”

# 3000 celebrated these murders. Sounds like the general populace are low life terrorists also. I think the peace process is DOA or before arrival.

#7  I think the peace process is DOA or before arrival.

As far as I can see, the only one who thinks this might accomplish anything at all is His Presidentness himself.

#8  The US labeled the deadly shooting Tuesday “a tragedy” while urging both sides not to take steps that would jeopardize direct peace negotiations set to be launched Thursday.

I think I just threw up a little in my mouth. Hamass - the government of Gaza - intentionally targets and murders unarmed civilians and all the US can say is 'it's a Tragedy - lets negotiate with the murderers....'

Someone, perhaps even the entire U.S. State Department, needs a good, HARD, kick in the ass.

#9  A few days ago, some Rabbi Yousif wished doom upon the "Palestinians" as a private citizen, and Abbas et. al. howled about it as if the Israeli government itself had done it. Now these guys kill four Israelis, one of them a pregnant woman, and it's total silence. Best case is that these guys acted privately. But you know they didn't.

#10  Wall 'em off, cut off all aid and let them make their own way in their own little hell.

They are so bloodthirsty, nothing will be alive in a year.

#11  So was this the peaceful, freedom-loving Hamas or the kill-the-jews Hamas?

As for the celebrations, if I were to wake up one day and read that the Israelis had gone all medieval on these murderous sumbitches, my only question would be "What took you so long?"
