Taliban call to kill collaborators
Mullah Omar, the leader of the Afghan Taliban, has reportedly issued a new directive in which he calls on his fighters to capture and kill any Afghan working for foreign forces.

Nato said they stumbled upon the five-point directive after intercepting a letter that the Taliban chief wrote to his field commanders.

The letter calls on commanders to fight foreign troops to the death and capture them whenever possible as well as instructing fighters to obtain more heavy weapons.

The appeal also instructs Taliban field commanders to recruit anyone with access to foreign military bases in order to obtain information on international troops.

One order in the letter specifically calls on fighters to capture and kill Afghan women who are "helping or providing information to coalition forces".

If genuine, the letter marks a turnaround from a directive issued by the Taliban a year ago when Omar urged fighters to avoid harming civilians even if they had been captured.

"We believe this guidance provides important insights into recent events as you may be aware the Taliban are causing an alarmingly high number of civilian causalities, and they have also begun attacking those who have chosen to serve the people of Afghanistan as public servants," Brigadier-General Josef Blotz, a spokesman of the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said at a news conference in Kabul on Sunday.

Blotz said he was "100 per cent sure" the letter was from the Taliban leader, although he could not reveal how it had been verified in order to protect Nato's sources.

The Taliban could not be immediately reached for comment.

Violence is at its worst in Afghanistan since US-led forces overthrew the Taliban in late 2001 for refusing to give up al-Qaeda members following the September 11 attacks in the United States.

Omar, seen as the founder of the Taliban movement that emerged during the civil war of the early 1990s, has not been seen in public for years. He is believed to be in Pakistan.

While other leaders are believed to be more involved in the day-to-day command of the insurgency in Afghanistan, Omar is still considered the spiritual head of the movement.

Mogadishu fighting kills 14 civilians
Somalia's Shebab insurgents have launched a fresh drive to topple the country's weak president, sparking fighting in Mogadishu that killed at least 14 civilians, medics and witnesses said on Monday.

The al Qaeda-inspired militants, who last week claimed deadly suicide bombings in Kampala, rekindled their bid to seize northeastern neighbourhoods from which they could directly threaten the transitional government's key infrastructure.

"The fighting broke out late on Sunday and stopped overnight but resumed early on Monday when the terrorist groups attacked our positions in Shibis and Abdulaziz neighbourhoods," government security official Ali Mohamed Dhere told AFP.

The Peugeot 505 was later found abandoned on the road to Ain Essebt in the Setif region.

According to a new National Gendarmerie report cited by Liberte on Monday, there were 116 abductions nationwide during the first six months of 2010.

FBI, ATF aid car bomb inquiry
Experts with the FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are helping Mexican authorities with their investigation of the July 15 car bombing in Juarez that killed three people.

"The FBI sent a small team to the crime scene to consult with our Mexican counterparts and we have offered them technical assistance with the car bombing," El Paso FBI Special Agent Andrea Simmons said Sunday. "We would only be involved if the Mexican government asked for our assistance in some way."

The ATF is also assisting, said Tom Crowley, a spokesman for the agency in Dallas.

#4  The only way Christians will ever get by when they live in a country with a lot of Muslims, is to do like the Hindus do, or preferably like the Sikhs do. Tit for tat revenge, from individually to a religious riot.

However, the "Untouchables" 'Chicago Way' is more effective. That is, when attacked, escalate. This is more how Israel at least used to do it. If the Muslims kill an Israeli, the Israelis would kill 10 Palestinians. And the Israelis showed the good taste to kill 10 war makers, not just a random herd of women and children.

You'll never be friends with Muslims, which of course was never to be in the first place. But you will keep them from exterminating you.

Even the Ottomans did this with restive Arabs. Whenever they would cut up rough, or be in open revolt, the Turks would send in a punitive expedition, and much like what Saddam did to the Kurds, slaughter a few thousand of them. This would settle them down for a generation.

2 Pakistani Christians killed at courthouse
Gunmen killed two Pakistani Christian brothers accused of blasphemy against Islam as they left court on Monday, a government minister and police said.

The men were chained together when the attack took place in the eastern city of Faislabad as they were being taken back into custody after their court appearance.

They were arrested a month ago after leaflets allegedly bearing their names and featuring derogatory remarks against the Prophet Muhammad were found in the town, said Shahbaz Bhatti, the minister for minority affairs. He said mosques in Faislabad had called for the men to be attacked.

Attack on British security firm in Iraq kills 4
[Al Arabiya Latest] A suicide car bomber ploughed into a convoy carrying employees of a British company in northern Iraq on Monday, killing four of them and wounding five Iraqi civilians, Iraqi security officials said.

The suicide bomber targeted the last vehicle of the convoy in restive Mosul, a dangerous city where al-Qaeda remains active, and the force of the blast threw the armored vehicle 40 meters into a ravine, killing everyone inside, police said.

"I saw the other members of the convoy bring out four dead foreign civilians from the smashed car. One of them was beheaded," an Iraqi military officer, asking not to be named, said by telephone from the site of the attack in northern Mosul.

Iron Dome passes final tests, ready for duty by November
Project director: Iron Dome provides complete solution to all rocket threats to Israel from Lebanon and the Gaza Strip and can be used to protect Israel's most vulnerable regions, even Sderot.
If true it's a game changer

#1  Yeee... I've been kind of expecting a shooting war this summer. The information that Iron Dome won't be online until November isn't exactly reassuring, for the same reason that people are concerned about American billionaires dying before the end of 2010 - because their respective deadlines are perverse incentives.

Hezb now has an incentive to spend their reserves of rockets before they forcibly depreciate.

#2

This Death Star is fully operational!
Posted by: Albert Ebbager8936 || 07/20/2010 9:43 Comments || Top||

#3  It is an exaggerated claim. Iron dome needs 15 seconds to fire. A Kassam can hit an Israeli city within 14 seconds. Also it is an economic disaster as each Iron Dome missile costs about $100,000.

A better solution would be the laser defense proposed by some US companies two years ago.
Posted by: BernardZ || 07/20/2010 11:19 Comments || Top||

#4  The concept of Iron Dome needs to be strongly augmented with fairly inexpensive and very effective C-RAM systems.

The Germans make a good 35mm C-RAM system which they will be fielding soon, and even a good old fashioned radar controlled Bofors-L70s would help the cause.

But in the final analysis, what Israel really needs are a whole bunch of 8-inch howitzers. For some stupid reason, they only currently have 155mm.

Ideally, have a couple of low tech 16-inch naval guns secret and underground near the border as well. With a max range of 23.5 miles, they will totally devastate any Hezbollah or Syrian positions within a large area, including any tunnels and underground bunkers.
Posted by: Anonymoose || 07/20/2010 11:22 Comments || Top||

#5  What the Israelis really need is a few arclight runs over southern Lebanon. Too bad our illustrious president has more sympathy for the Hezzies than Israel.
Posted by: Ebbang Uluque6305 || 07/20/2010 11:49 Comments || Top||

#6  Arclight runs? They can put Q-ships off the coast as well, and maybe even drop used F-150's on the positions.
Posted by: No I am The Other Beldar || 07/20/2010 13:47 Comments || Top||

#7  Errr...does anyone actually know that Iron Dome detects where a rocket will fall? If it will not impact a city, no interceptor is fired.

That's the whole point of this system, what makes it unique. But that's about the 11,000th time today I've seen criticism of the cost-effectiveness.
Posted by: gromky || 07/20/2010 13:53 Comments || Top||

#8  gromky: But what is proposed as a feature, that it, minimizing harm downrange, is actually a bug. If a 35mm C-RAM misses its target, optimally you would get a high explosive ballistic lead rain about 4km downrange.

As in "we accidentally forgot to set their airburst fusing, and wiped out a Hezbollah ground unit by accident. Oops."

Oh, yeah, and those missiles are expensive.

[Ma'an] A tunnel worker was killed Sunday night after he was electrocuted while working in the tunnel complex along the Gaza-Egypt border in Rafah, medics said.

Chief of ambulance and emergency services in Gaza Muawiya Hassanein identified the worker as as 22-year-old Imad Assaf from Jabaliya in the northern Gaza Strip. Assaf's body was taken to the Abu Yousef An-Najjar Hospital in Rafah, Hassanein added.

Israel nabs Hamas cell accused of deadly shooting
[Dawn] Israel has arrested five Palestinians accused of being members of a Hamas cell responsible for killing an Israeli policeman in the West Bank, the Shin Bet security service said Monday.

It said the men, all in their 20s, confessed to killing the policeman near the West Bank town of Hebron on June 14 and handed over three Kalashnikov rifles they used. The arrests were carried out a week after the attack, which wounded two other policemen, but were only made public Monday in a statement released to the media.

The names of the arrested men were not released, and it was not possible to confirm the details with their families or lawyers. Hamas Web sites mentioned the arrests but did not explicitly link the group to the attack Monday.

Nine wounded in bombing in southern Thailand
Nine people - three soldiers, three defence volunteers and three villagers - have been wounded in a bomb explosion at a roadside bus shelter in Narathiwat's Sungai Kolok district.

The blast took place yesterday about 5pm while a six-member patrol unit from Narathiwat Task Force 36 was stopped at the shelter near a three-way junction on the Asian Highway in Sungai Kolok municipality. They were preparing to set up a checkpoint in front of the shelter when a bomb placed in a 5kg metal box behind it exploded. District police said nearby insurgents had activated the blast using a mobile phone.

Three soldiers, three defence volunteers, one male and two female villagers were wounded in the attack and admitted to the district hospital.

Weera Parnton, 50, a teacher at Pattani Technical College, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Pattani's Muang district on Sunday while standing in front of a laundry about 10pm. Three men on a motorcycle approached Weera and shot him three times before fleeing in a waiting vehicle, witnesses said. Weera was later pronounced dead.

Somphan Lampa, 46, was also attacked by two unidentified gunmen in Nong Chik, although he survived the attack. Mr Somphan was driving a pickup when he passed by two men standing by the road, each wielding a pistol, police said. One fired at Mr Somphan, hitting him in the cheek.

Msia nabs terror recruiter
[Straits Times] MALAYSIA on Monday confirmed it had arrested a man accused of recruiting students for the Al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terror organisation, but played down the threat posed by the group.

'And trust me, when we actually arrested that particular individual that was after many months of monitoring his movement,' the minister said on the sidelines of a regional security conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Syria bans face veils at universities
Syria has banned the face-covering Islamic veil from the country's universities to prevent what it sees as a threat to its secular identity, as similar moves in Europe spark cries of discrimination against Muslims.

The Education Ministry issued the ban Sunday, according to a government official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak publicly.

The ban, which affects public and private universities, is only against the niqab - a full Islamic veil that reveals only a woman's eyes - not headscarves, which are far more commonly worn by Syrian women.
