#1  Any place next to pakistan is a dangerous place!

I would like to see the figues for the amount of insurgents who are pakistani which must be alot more than the amount of insurgents in Iraq from our other ally Saudi!

#2  You would think that people making propaganda would make their fighters look like something other than a bunch of yahoos yelling Allahu akbar, perhaps even showing one or two aiming at something. Girls at a laser tag facility look more threatening than these bozos. Different ROE and they would be wiped off the face of the earth.

Ontario colonel among those killed in Kabul attack
Col. Geoff Parker, 42, died Tuesday when a car bomber attacked a NATO convoy, killing 18 people, including five U.S. soldiers and 12 civilians on a nearby public bus in rush-hour traffic.

Parker had been with the Canadian Forces for 21 years. He is thought to be the highest-ranking member of the Canadian Forces to die in Afghanistan. He also died in the deadliest attack NATO troops have suffered in Kabul this year.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said "there were casualties among the NATO forces as well as among civilians -- women, children and schoolchildren." The deadly blast wrecked nearly 20 vehicles, including five SUVs in the NATO convoy.

Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid claimed in a telephone interview with The Associated Press that the bomber was from Kabul and carried 750 kilograms of explosives in his car. The bomber had been deliberately targeting the NATO convoy, Mujahid said.

Parker was commanding officer of 2nd Battalion, RCR, based at CFB Gagetown. He was in Kabul to interact with international organizations to prepare his team for their upcoming mission.

Insurgents attack Bagram Air Field
KABUL, Afghanistan – Insurgents launched a brazen pre-dawn assault Wednesday against the giant U.S.-run Bagram Air Field one day after a suicide bomber struck a U.S. convoy in the capital of Kabul, killing 18 people. The Kabul dead included five American troops and a Canadian and was the deadliest attack on NATO in the Afghan capital in eight months.

A U.S. statement said seven insurgents had been killed so far during the "ongoing attack" on Bagram, which included rockets, small arms and grenades. Five service members have been wounded, the statement said without specifying whether they were Americans.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on Bagram, 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Kabul. Taliban spokesman Zabaiullah Mujahid said 20 suicide attackers carried out the attack.
Capt. Chris Sukach, a U.S. spokeswoman at Bagram, said a "noncritical building" had been hit in the attack, which began about 3 a.m. Another U.S. spokeswoman, Ali Bettencourt, said sporadic explosions could be still heard around the base hours after the attack.

Taliban Car Bomb Strikes U.S. Convoy in Kabul
KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban struck here at the heart of the Afghan capital Tuesday, with a suicide bomber steering his explosives-laden Toyota minibus into an American convoy as it moved through the thick of rush-hour traffic. The attack killed 18 people, including 5 American soldiers and an officer from Canada, and wounded at least 47 civilians.

The assault, which brought mayhem and carnage to one of the capital's main thoroughfares, comes as Afghan leaders and NATO commanders are preparing to launch a major offensive in the southern city of Kandahar, the Taliban's spiritual home. If nothing else, the attack seemed intended to remind American and Afghan leaders of what the next several months might hold in store as the offensive unfolds.

The blast sent a fireball billowing into the air, set cars aflame and blew bodies apart. Limbs and entrails flew hundreds of feet, littering yards and walls and streets. The survivors, many of them women and children, some of them missing limbs, lay in the road moaning and calling for help.

The Taliban took responsibility for the attack in a posting on its Web site, saying the group had dispatched a young man named Nizamuddin, a resident of Kabul. The Taliban said that Nizamuddin's bomb weighed more than 1,600 pounds.

Bombers who have struck in the past have sometimes cruised the capital looking for targets, holding off on the detonator before they have found their marks. Intelligence officers often receive reports that car and suicide bombers have entered Kabul, some of them with no particular targets in mind. That may have been the case Tuesday morning, when Nizamuddin, if that was his name, steered his minibus into the line of American cars.

It was the worst attack in Kabul in weeks. The insurgency is a largely rural phenomenon in a largely rural country, and on most days the capital is calm. The peace in the city, such as there is, is kept almost entirely by the Afghan police and army, with the Americans and NATO standing back.

While the Taliban were quick to congratulate themselves for killing the American and NATO soldiers, their statement made no mention of the dead and wounded Afghan civilians. The attack was condemned by the United Nations, NATO and the American Embassy, which accused the Taliban of “callous disregard' for the lives of ordinary Afghans.

The bomber struck at 8 a.m., when the streets were filled with traffic. The American convoy, which contained a number of armored S.U.V.'s, was moving down Dar-ul-Aman Road on the southern edge of the city. The road leads up a hill to the Afghan Counterinsurgency Academy, one of the principal centers for teaching tactics to Afghan officers and enlisted men.

The school, also known as the COIN Academy, sits just behind the Dar-ul-Aman Palace, a grand building built by King Amonullah, an Afghan monarch, early in the 20th century. In the 1980s, the building served as a club for Soviet military officers. It still sits atop the barren hill, riddled with bullet holes and shell holes, a gutted husk.

As the chaos unfolded, ambulances converged on the scene, and a pair of Black Hawk helicopters swooped in to take away the dead and wounded NATO soldiers.

#1  That thing weighed almost a ton. You'd think someone would have notices something as it went through a checkpoint because a ton is a lot for a minibus.

Maybe the brakes were straining when it stopped. Maybe the suspension was low and the tires looked loaded. Maybe the engine was straining when it pulled away.

They can stiffen up the suspension and put air in the tires, though.

So maybe cars going through checkpoints need to be weighed. Or maybe have the air pressure in their tires checked with a hammer or air pressure gauge.

Yemen court sentences six Somali pirates to death
DUBAI - A court in Yemen sentenced six Somali pirates to death for hijacking a Yemeni oil tanker in April 2009, killing one Yemeni crew member and leaving another missing, the Defence Ministry said on Tuesday. Six other pirates were sentenced to 10 years in prison in the hijacking, which also wounded four crew members of the “Qana' ship that was heading to the port of Aden.

Part of Tuesday's ruling by a criminal court requires the convicted pirates to pay the company that owns the hijacked vessel, Masafi Aden, a sum of 2 million Yemen riyals ($9,200).

The Defence Ministry's online newspaper said the court would require Masafi Aden to pay a certain portion of the reparations to the Yemeni victims' families.

Saudi forces rescue two German girls held in Yemen
RIYADH - Saudi Arabia's security forces have rescued two young German girls held hostage for nearly a year in neighbouring Yemen, Riyadh said on Tuesday, but a family spokesman said their toddler brother was likely dead. The girls, reported to be between 3 and 6 years old, were members of a German family of five who have been held by kidnappers the Yemeni government believes have links to al Qaeda. The pair were said to be in a good condition.

“Saudi Arabia has retrieved two German children kidnapped in Yemen,' a Saudi interior ministry spokesman said. “The two children were in a border area between the two countries.'

The German family was among a group of nine foreigners taken hostage in northern Yemen in June, of which three women — two Germans and a South Korean — were later found dead. Three German family members and a Briton remain missing.

“We received good news and bad news,' Reinhard Poetschke, the mother's brother, was quoted telling the Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung newspaper according to an advance release. “Both daughters are free but the son is probably no longer alive. We don't know anything about the fate of the parents.'

He said the family in Germany was informed about the rescue on Monday afternoon. “Now we're making preparations for the girls' return home,' he said.

The German foreign minister said the rescued girls were in relatively good health and would return home on Wednesday, but he remained concerned about the remaining German hostages.

Home Front: WoT
Shahzad hauled into court
Over the last two weeks, the naturalized Pakistani immigrant charged with driving a crude car bomb into Times Square settled into something of a strange daily routine: He signed a piece of paper waiving his right to a lawyer and a speedy court appearance. Then he continued to talk to federal authorities, providing what they have called valuable intelligence.

On Tuesday, that extraordinary routine — which has kept him out of a courtroom, away from a lawyer and out of the public eye — was interrupted. The immigrant, Faisal Shahzad, whose unsuccessful attempt to detonate the car bomb on May 1 wrought chaos among thousands of people in Times Square, appeared in court for the first time, represented by a lawyer.

But the tension and drama that led up to the brief proceeding, including a sweep of the packed fifth-floor courtroom that cleared mobs of reporters and spectators so the room could be secured, far overshadowed the substance of the hearing, which lasted less than 10 minutes.

Indeed, Mr. Shahzad, 30, a former financial analyst who was raised in a military family in Pakistan and earned degrees from the University of Bridgeport, spoke only one word — “yes' — during his appearance in Manhattan federal court, confirming that the information in a financial affidavit was the truth. He seemed calm and looked intently at Magistrate Judge James C. Francis IV, who at one point read him his rights and warned him that anything he said could be used against him.

The judge ordered Mr. Shahzad detained without bail at the government's request, and he is now being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

The hearing came after Mr. Shahzad indicated he was ready to stop waiving his right to a speedy court appearance, people briefed on the matter said. The proceeding is known as a presentment, or an initial court appearance on a complaint. Mr. Shahzad was not asked to enter a plea, and he did not do so.

Mr. Shahzad, who had been held at an undisclosed location since his arrest, was arrested on May 3 at Kennedy International Airport aboard a plane that was about to leave for Dubai. He began cooperating with prosecutors and F.B.I. agents and police detectives from the Joint Terrorism Task Force a short time later.

The day after the arrest, he was charged in the complaint with one count each of attempting acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries; attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction; using a destructive device in connection with an attempted crime of violence; transporting explosives; and attempting to destroy property with fire and explosives. The first two charges each carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

India offers talks if Maoist rebels stop attacks
One hopes this is just the interlude before gob-smacking the Naxalites ...
NEW DELHI: India is willing to begin peace talks with Maoist rebels, but only if the insurgents halt all attacks for 72 hours, the home minister said on Tuesday.

The offer followed a rebel ambush on Monday of a bus in central India that killed 31 police officers and civilians and highlighted the Maoists' strength despite a government offensive aimed at ending one of Asia's longest rebellions. The rebels, who have tapped into the rural poor's growing anger at being left out of the country's economic gains, are now present in 20 of the country's 28 states and have an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 fighters, according to the Home Ministry.

Home Minister P Chidamabram said in a TV interview on Tuesday that the government welcomes peace talks, as long as the insurgents halt attacks. “The Maoists should say, ‘we abjure violence from any date they fix for 72 hours, he told the CNN-IBN news channel. The government would then convene talks with the insurgents, he said.

The CNN-IBN news channel quoted Ramanna, a Maoist leader in Chhattisgarh state, as saying over the phone that the government should first withdraw thousands of paramilitary soldiers deployed to fight the rebels and create peaceful conditions for talks.

In a sign the government is also losing patience with the ongoing rebel attacks, Chidamabram expressed a willingness to authorise the use of air power in the fight.' The security forces, the chief ministers want air support,' he said in an earlier interview with NDTV. When asked why he cannot convince the union cabinet to authorise air strikes, Chidamabram said, “I will try'.

Top Indian officials have been reluctant to escalate the fight, arguing it is inappropriate to use air strikes against India's own citizens. The home minister said the government would need to revisit its policies after a spate of recent insurgent attacks. Last month, the rebels ambushed a paramilitary patrol, killing 76 troops.

#2  AP: A Pakistani army major was arrested Tuesday in connection with the failed Times Square car bombing on May 1, The LA Times reported Wednesday.

The major’s link to suspect Faisal Shahzad, was unclear but Pakistani law enforcement sources confirmed to the newspaper that the pair had met in the capital Islamabad and that they were in cellphone contact.

The sources did not provide further details of the meeting or calls and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The report was later denied in a statement to the media from the Pakistan Army's Inter-Services Public Relations unit. It said the officer, identified by some local newspapers as Signal Corps Major Adnan, was sacked and arrested for insubordination unconnected to the New York Terror attack.
