CIA About To Attack DOD Using NYT
I have just received word that the New York Times is preparing to go public with a list of names of Americans covertly working in Afghanistan providing force protection for our troops, as well as the rest of our Coalition Forces.

If the Times actually sees this through, the red ink they are drowning in will be nothing compared to the blood their entire organization will be covered with. Make no mistake, the Times is about to cause casualty rates in Afghanistan to skyrocket. Each and every American should be outraged.

The Central Intelligence Agency via the New York Times has been waging a nasty proxy war against the Department of Defense over its use of former military and intelligence personnel to do what the CIA is both incapable and unwilling to do: gather the much needed intelligence that keeps our troops safe.

According to Washington Post columnist, David Ignatius, "[T]he U.S. military has long been unhappy about the quality of CIA intelligence in Afghanistan," and the senior military intelligence officer in Afghanistan, Maj Gen Michael T. Flynn went so far as to publish a stunning report calling for "sweeping changes to the way the intelligence community thinks about itself."

The report goes on to quote General Stanley McChrystal, who stated that "our senior leaders -- the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Secretary of Defense, Congress, the President of the United States -- are not getting the right information to make decisions with ... The media is driving the issues."

Through its use of the New York Times, the Central Intelligence Agency has tried to embarrass the Defense Department into shutting down what, by all accounts, has been an amazingly successful program, which has dramatically saved American and Coalition lives and continues to do so on a daily basis.

But thanks to the beating the folks on the 7th floor at Langley and the New York Times have taken in the blogosphere, they are about to go for broke and to do so in a fashion so grotesque that every American should be moved to action.

These morbidly conjoined twins have entered dangerous territory. They are not only putting at risk the lives of the brave men and women working day and night to keep our troops safe (who, along with their families, will surely be targeted for retribution by al Qaeda and the Taliban), but they are also calling down a host of legal woes via the Intelligence Identities Protection Act (made famous in the Valerie Plame affair under the George W. Bush Administration) as the intelligence gathered and reported on by the Defense Department operatives in question is most definitely classified.

So while the New York Times stands ready to once again put American lives at grave risk in order to sell a few more papers, the Central Intelligence Agency appears committed to its misguided "Kappes Doctrine", (so named for Leon Panetta's number-two man, who many in the intel game blame for being the "hidden hand in many of the nation's intelligence failures").

Per the Kappes Doctrine, which was so disastrously tied to the F.O.B. Chapman attack, the Agency is happy to pay foreign intel services to take the risks as long as the CIA can take the credit (and in this case, continue to claim that what the Department of Defense is doing every day on the ground in Afghanistan can't be done).

But fortunately for our troops, it is being done, it has saved countless lives, and it will continue to do so, unless the Times publishes its list.
(The FOB Chapman attack was the suicide bombing of the CIA outpost.)

From The Corner

CIA No. 2 to Retire [Daniel Foster]

Steve Kappes, second-in-command at the CIA, is retiring. Kappes left the CIA once already, in 2004 after a spat with then-director Porter Goss. He returned in 2006 to much internal fanfare, and when President Obama asked him to stay on as Leon Panetta's deputy (even though Kappes had in his official capacity supported and overseen everything from rendition to enhanced interrogation), it was viewed as a morale booster inside the agency.

As likely as not, Kappes' retirement is a personal choice. But there have been some recent grumblings about his stewardship of covert operations, especially in Afghanistan.

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court. The Congress shall have power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.

Empire builders and Silo kingdoms under the command of ass covering blanket-folders have rotted the CIA. DoD is the effective Ops arm anymore, which is why the careerists at Langley are doing stupid treasonous stuff like this.

U.S. forces close outpost in Afghan ‘valley of death'
The last American soldier left the base here Wednesday, surrounded by tall cedar trees and high mountains, a place that came to be called the Valley of Death. The near daily battles here were won, but almost always leaving wounded or dead behind. There were never enough soldiers to crush the insurgency, and after four years of trying, it became clear that there was not much worth winning in this sparsely populated valley.

Closing the Korangal Outpost, a powerful symbol of some of the Afghan war's most ferocious fights, and a potential harbinger of America's retreat, is a tacit admission that putting the base there in the first place was a costly mistake. It is also part of a new effort by Gen. Stanley A. McChyrstal, commander of forces here since last summer, to consolidate and refocus his forces in places where they might change the momentum of what had become a losing contest.

Fighting for isolated mountain valleys like this one, even if they are hideouts for clusters of Taliban, was no longer sustainable. And it did more to spawn insurgents than defeat them. Better to put those soldiers in cites and towns where they could protect people and help them connect to the Afghan government, he reasoned. “There's never a perfect answer,' General McChrystal said as he visited this outpost on April 8 for a briefing as the withdrawal began. “I care deeply about everybody who has been hurt here, but I can't do anything about it. I can do something about people who might be hurt in the future.

“The battle changes, the war changes,' he added. “If you don't understand the dynamics you have no chance of getting it right. We've been slower here than I would have liked.'

Forty two American service men died fighting in the Korangal and hundreds were wounded, according to military statistics. Most died in the three years from 2006 to 2009. Many Afghan soldiers died there as well and in larger numbers since they had poorer equipment. In a war characterized by small, brutal battles, the Korangal had more than its share, and its abandonment now has left soldiers who fought there confronting confusion, anger and pain.

The Korangal Outpost was the third area of eastern Afghanistan where combat outposts closed: In 2007 and 2008 two posts and a smaller satellite base were closed in Kunar's Waygal Valley, and in 2009 two posts were closed in Nuristan Province's Kamdesh region. Along with the main Korangal outpost, five small satellite bases have closed, at least two of them, Restrepo and Vimoto, were named for soldiers who died there.

US Leaves Korengal Valley
Troops redeploying out of this dangerous and isolated area along the Pakistani border. We were supposedly there to try to cut a key weapons smuggling route - can't believe we actually succeeded and are pulling out 'mission accomplished.' Are we doing so because of improved Pakistani cooperation on their side? Because even with our increased force level in the country, we need these men more somewhere else? Because we need their long logistics tail more somewhere else? Or just giving up?

[Bangla Daily Star] Police filed a case accusing 1,500 to 2,000 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir for attack on police at city's Anderkilla Intersection on Monday.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Yunus Mian of Kotwali Police Station filed the case mentioning the names of 29 identified persons among the accused, including former Jamaat lawmaker Mohammad Shahjahan Chowdhury, on the same night.

Earlier on Monday, at least 15 people including four policemen were injured in a clash between Jamaat-Shibir activists and police following interception of their attempted procession by the latter at Anderkilla.

During the clash, Jamaat-Shibir men attacked police with batons, pelted brickbats and hurled cocktail before vandalising four vehicles and damaging two bookshops.

Police picked up 11 Jamaat-Shibir men from the spot.

Later on, six of them were released and the rest were produced before the court yesterday.

The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Anisur Rahman fixed April 18 for remand hearing after police produced them before it praying seven-day remand.

Iraq
Plot to fly planes into Shia holy sites foiled in Iraq
Iraqi and U.S. security officials say Iraqi forces have foiled an Al Qaeda in Iraq plot for a 9/11-style attack to hijack airlines and fly them into Shiite holy shrines.

Two senior Iraqi officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday they have arrested two men allegedly linked to the plan, which shut down the airport in Najaf for days and Baghdad airport for hours last week.

Two senior U.S. intelligence officials in Washington confirmed the plot but said it's doubtful the alleged plotters were very far along in their planning -- or even had the ability to carry it out.

The officials say the plan was aimed at re-igniting sectarian violence.

Liquor store bomb kills three in Baghdad
[Dawn] Iraqi officials say a bomb inside a Baghdad liquor store killed three people and wounded seven, while an Iraqi TV reporter was in critical condition after a bomb planted in his car exploded.

A police official says the liquor store bombing took place around noon Tuesday after a bomb hidden in a black plastic bag left behind by people posing as customers went off.

A doctor at the nearby al-Kindi hospital, where the victims were taken, confirmed the casualties.

Both the police official and the doctor spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Separately, another doctor said al-Baghdadia TV reporter Omar Ibrahim Rasheed lost both of his legs and was in critical condition after a bomb planted inside his car detonated on Tuesday.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Hamas orders Gaza smuggling tunnels shut under Egyptian pressure
Hamas on Wednesday ordered Gaza residents to shut smuggling tunnels along the border with Egypt indefinitely, residents and tunnel operators said Wednesday.

Gaza sources told Haaretz that the decision to close the tunnels was a response to an urgent request from Egyptian security services following warnings of planned terror attacks in the Sinai Peninsula. Closure of the tunnels was temporary, the sources said, adding that Hamas feared Israel would bomb the tunnels if they were not shut down.

The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, normally open on Wednesdays and Thursdays to Gazans traveling abroad for medical treatment, was also closed.

Israel on Tuesday issued a warning to all citizens in Sinai to leave immediately, citing concrete evidence that militants were trying to kidnap Israelis. By midday Wednesday, most of the estimated 650 Israelis in Sinai had returned home.

Forces of the Islamic militant Hamas moved into the border area late Tuesday and ordered tunnel operators to cease operations until further notice. The operators were allowed to retrieve food and other perishable goods, but otherwise barred from the area on Wednesday.

"This is the first time this has happened," said Jasser Younes, a 25-year-old tunnel worker who helps smuggle cement into Gaza. Two other tunnel operators said Hamas security forces warned people they would be punished if they defied the order. They declined to be identified for fear of punishment.

Wednesday's crackdown comes at a difficult time for the tunnel industry. Rafah officials say that Egypt has stepped up a crackdown on smuggling in recent months, setting up checkpoints in the border area and confiscating contraband.

Egypt is also building an underground steel wall to block the tunnels. Rafah officials say about six kilometers of the wall - covering roughly half of the border area - is already complete.

The officials say the Egyptian measures have led to a sharp slowdown in tunnel traffic in recent months, pinching the local economy.

Mosque vandalized as settlers attack Palestinian village
More than 300 olive trees were uprooted and two cars set alight in the West Bank village of Hawara in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Stars of David and the word 'Mohammed,' as well as racist slogans, were also sprayed in Hebrew across the town, including on the walls of a mosque.
What's the Hebrew word for "intifadeh"?
A military official told Army Radio that the army suspected settler violence against Palestinians, part of some settlers' policy of imposing a 'price tag' on a government order to freeze Israeli construction in the West Bank. As part of the strategy, settlers from nearby Yitzhar have launched numerous attacks on Palestinians, including an arson attack on a mosque in December 2009.

The Israel Defense Forces condemned the attacks, promising to investigate and bring the attackers to justice. Shin Bet, the security service, will also open an inquiry into the incident, Haaretz has learned.

"The IDF conveyed a message to the Palestinians through the Civil Administration [which governs Israeli-controlled parts of the West Bank]to reassure them that the IDF takes the matter of harming or vandalizing of holy sites very seriously," the army said in a statement. "It should be noted that the Civil Administration erased the graffiti this morning."

Tensions between Hawara residents the nearby settlements of Yitzhar have flared in recent weeks after two settlers were wounded when stones were thrown at them, one suffering permanent neurological damage.

Southeast Asia
Two attacks leave one dead in southern Thailand
An M79 grenade explosion on Wednesday missed a local home apparently targeted in Ruso district of Narathiwat, damaging an electric power pole instead, but no casualties were reported. The grenade attack damaged an electric pole and trees and caused a small depression in front of the house, the bomb disposal unit reported, and remnants of an M79 grenade were found at the scene.

According to the initial investigation, while a squad of eight soldiers was patrolling near the targeted house, the only residence belonging to Thai Buddhists in that area, the terrorists suspected insurgents fired two shots of M79 at the target. Later on, both military and the terrorists suspected insurgents exchanged gunfire. No one was killed or injured in the incident.

In another attack in Narathiwat, a suspected terrorist group killed a village defence volunteer, identified as Veeranan Api, in Si Sakhon district by slashing his head. Severely wounded on the back of the head, the victim's body was placed under a bridge in the village. Local police presumed that it was the work of terrorists suspected insurgents who wanted to create unrest.

2 dead in Philippines blasts
[Straits Times] BOMB attacks killed two people on Tuesday on a restive southern Philippine island where Al Qaeda-linked militants are known to operate, police said.

The attackers apparently targeted a government building and a church in Isabela city on Basilan island with two home-made bombs, then shot at civilians, provincial police chief Senior Superintendent Antonio Mendoza said.

'Two were killed in the initial blast,' Supt Mendoza told reporters in the port city of Zamboanga, a short ferry ride across the strait from Basilan.

The first bomb went off about 10.30am (0230 GMT, 10.30am Singapore time) outside an education department building, according to Supt Mendoza.

He said the second, rigged to a motorcycle left near a Roman Catholic church, went off minutes later as security forces chased after the suspects. 'It heavily damaged the church,' he said, but added no-one was wounded in that blast.

'The men were shooting at civilians as they fled towards a forested area,' Supt Mendoza said. Authorities said they were yet to determine who was behind the attacks.

6 terror suspects nabbed
[Straits Times] SIX suspected terrorists nabbed in Medan on Sunday included two former convicts suspected of involvement in earlier bombings in Jakarta, and a man who allegedly had received militant training in southern Philippines.

Information released by police yesterday and several news reports said the six men had fled Aceh in the wake of counter-terrorism operations there.

Police officers had stormed a militant training camp in the forest in February, but were unable to capture all the trainees.

To date, more than 40 members of the group have been nabbed alive, while at least seven others, including explosives expert and Jemaah Islamiah leader Dulmatin, have been killed.

Dulmatin, one of the masterminds of the 2002 Bali bombings and a supporter of the Aceh training camp, was tracked down in early March in Tangerang, West Java, based on information from the men detained in Aceh.

Yesterday, Aceh police shot dead one suspect and arrested four more men in two raids.

Abu Sayyaf truck bomb went off early, killing terrorists including commander's brother
*sigh* Terrorists just aren't what they used to be. So many of the talented ones have been killed or arrested, it appears.
ZAMBOANGA CITY--Abu Sayyaf bandits took their campaign of terror to the heart of Basilan on Tuesday, setting off bombs at a Roman Catholic cathedral, school grandstand and three other places, and clashing with government forces in Isabela City.

At least 15 people, including the brother of Abu Sayyaf leader Purudji Indama, were killed in the attacks staged by armed men wearing police and military uniforms, reports said Monday night.

A bomb explosion tore apart a Hyundai Starex van parked beside the grandstand of Basilan National High School in Barangay Eastside at around 10:30 a.m. Killed were two civilians and a man in police uniform, who later turned out to be Indama's brother Benzar.

Prematurely triggered
Citing reports of bomb experts, Mendoza said in a phone interview that an improvised explosives device (IED) inside the van "was prematurely triggered."

Three Abu Sayyaf members on board the vehicle, including Benzar who was seated at the rear portion, were killed in the blast, he said.

He said responding Marine soldiers were fired upon by the armed men. "Two of the Marines were initially wounded and later died," he said.

"Our troops were being fired at by snipers. Some residents told us they saw at least eight armed men leaving the campus," Mendoza told reporters in Manila. The attackers also fired at houses as they fled, he said.

Two more men wearing police uniforms were captured by the soldiers near the grandstand, he told local journalists.

Lt. Gen. Ben Dolorfino, Western Mindanao Command chief, said the armed men belonged to the Abu Sayyaf.

Cathedral explosion
While the fighting was going on, another bomb placed under a motorcycle went off at the rear portion of Santa Isabel Cathedral on J.S. Alano Street at around 11 a.m., Mendoza said.
I suppose the gang had previously placed this one before the workplace accident.
Five people were wounded, he said.

"The cathedral was attacked by rebels ... I call my people to stay calm. I call the men and women in uniform. We need assistance to neutralize the situation in the cathedral," Bishop Jumoad said in an interview over the Church-run Radio Veritas.

"I asked for prayers particularly from the Pink Sisters from the Carmelite monastery that there will be peace so that the problem will be immediately resolved," he added.
There will be peace when your kind has been exterminated, Father.
Or when the Abu Sayyaf kind has been.
Small stores and shops, and at least four vehicles were damaged by the blast, Jumoad said, citing reports from nuns and priests.

Jumoad said three other explosions rocked the city plaza, the house of Judge Leo Principe and the vicinity of City Hall.

Detonated bomb
But police said the bomb found outside Principe's house was detonated by members of the Zamboanga Explosives and Ordnance Disposal Team.
A dud. Looks like they have a quality control problem in their bomb manufacturing. Might want to bring in some TQM consultants or something.
At least five Marines and one policeman, identified only as a certain Morales, were killed, police reports said Monday night.

One Marine was wounded while trying to secure the capitol building, Maj. Gen. Juancho Sabban, Marine commandant, was quoted by The Associated Press (AP) as saying.

Military and police officials refused to disclose the names of the government fatalities.

Five civilians were also among the dead, Mendoza told the Inquirer. He identified them as Enrico dela Luna, Edilberto Villa, Rodelio Francisco, Boy Nabi and one Ivan.
"Boy Nabi"? Like the Boy Wonder? Or Boy, from Tarzan?
Several others were wounded, while five bandits were captured, Dolorfino said.

"Right now, clashes are ongoing near the Tabiawan area," he said, raising fears that the attackers might proceed to Lamitan town.

#1  "*sigh* Terrorists just aren't what they used to be. So many of the talented ones have been killed or arrested, it appears"

Yeah, we've thinned the herd a lot more than anyone in the media will admit. I remember a span of about 3 days in 2005 where we confirmed over 70 killed by our rockets in Anbar Province, but nobody reported it. They won't admit that we're getting better at countering terror tactics either. Of course, it doesn't help that our military and OGA guys go to war wearing handcuffs while the specter of Congressional Spanish Inquisitions looms over every battle and interrogation.

#3  Yeah, we've thinned the herd a lot more than anyone in the media will admit. They won't admit that we're getting better at countering terror tactics either.

Thank you for that, Keeney. I needed some good news today, and am very happy to admit yours. Well done to all the herd thinners and tactic counterers!

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria arms Hezbollah with Scud missiles: Israel
[Al Arabiya Latest] Israeli President Shimon Peres on Tuesday accused Syria of supplying Scud missiles to the Lebanese Hezbollah while publicly talking peace, as Lebanon complained to United Nations over Israel's violation of its territory few days ago.

"Syria claims it wants peace while at the same time it delivers Scuds to Hezbollah whose only goal is to threaten the state of Israel," Peres told public radio.

There have been reports in the past, notably in Arab media and by specialized think-tanks, that Syria was sending some of its arsenal of Scud missiles to Lebanon.

"Syria believes it need do nothing more than let itself be courted by the world, while saying one thing and doing the opposite," said Peres, whose post is largely ceremonial.

He made the comments just hours before flying to Paris, where he is expected to discuss the issue in talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Israel's Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai declined to go into details of the alleged Scud shipment, but said "Hezbollah's firing capacity has significantly improved."

Israel accuses both Syria and Iran of supplying arms to Hezbollah, whose deadly attack on an army patrol in Israel triggered a bloody war in the summer of 2006.

The 34-day conflict with Hezbollah killed 1,200 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and more than 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.

Dinnerjacket was preparing for an earthquake last week--one of the Ayotollahs has taught that a great earthquake accompanies the arrival of the mahdi. He's clearly preparing to provoke chaos and soon. Bibi don't fail us now.
