Afghanistan
In Helmand, kaboom murders 11 Afghan civilians. Taliban takes credit.
[Iran Press TV Latest] A roadside bomb explosion has killed at least 11 civilians in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand.

Daud Ahmadi, the Helmand governor's spokesman, blamed the attack on the Taliban and said two women and two children were among the dead. Ahmadi told journalists on Sunday that "a civilian car struck a roadside bomb in Nawzad district" in the north of the province.

Elsewhere, in southern Afghanistan, two separate bomb blasts have reportedly killed six Afghan police officers. Four officers were killed in Khost province, while two others lost their lives in Kandahar. The Taliban has reportedly claimed responsibility both attacks.

Radhika Coomaraswamy, the UN secretary general's special representative for children and armed conflict, said earlier in the month that 346 children were killed in Afghan last year. "131 of these were by aerial strikes, 22 by search-and-raid by Special Forces; 128 were killed by anti-Government elements, including assassinations and suicide bombings," visiting Coomaraswamy added.

Thousands of Afghan civilians have lost their lives since the 2001 US-led invasion, and subsequently occupation, of Afghanistan.

Marines, Afghan troops to stay months in Marjah
More than 2,000 U.S. Marines and about 1,000 Afghan troops who stormed the Taliban town of Marjah as part of a major NATO offensive against a resurgent Taliban will stay several months to ensure insurgents don't return, Marine commanders said Sunday.

Meanwhile, insurgents are striking back by attacking resupply convoys moving in and out of Marjah with roadside bombs, Marines said Sunday. Four convoys have been hit in the last two days, Marines said on condition of anonymity because they were not supposed to release the information. There was no word on casualties.

Two Marine battalions and their Afghan counterparts will be stationed in Marjah and help patrol it as part of NATO's "clear, hold, build" strategy, which calls for troops to secure the area, restore a civilian Afghan administration, and bring in aid and public services to win the support of the population, commanders said.

On Sunday, the 1,000 Marines with the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines Regiment were fortifying positions to the north and west of the town, taking over compounds and building others from scratch to create a small garrison, known as a Forward Operating Base, as well as combat outposts and a network of temporary patrol bases, said Capt. Joshua Winfrey, head of Lima Company.

Another battalion was doing the same to the south of Marjah, Winfrey said. About 1,000 Afghan troops will accompany the Marines, he added. In addition about 900 Afghan paramilitary police are already patrolling Marjah.

Marine spokesman Capt. Abe Sipe said a more permanent military outpost will facilitate a long-term NATO presence in the town.

"We are going to have a presence in Marjah for some time. There's no plans for anyone to pull out," Sipe said. "The idea is to live among the local nationals because we found that's the best way to partner with local security partners to make Afghans feel safe and not under threat."

Marjah residents had told government officials that they preferred NATO troops to be based in the town itself, instead of being outside, to provide better security.

#1  That ought to give the Talibunnies in drag plenty of time to reconsider putting their "uniforms" back on and taking another swing at our Marines (who incidentally, are still wearing their uniforms). That is, if the Talibunnies have anything in their panties.

Somali pirates free vessel
Somali pirates released a Panama-registered cargo ship they seized two months ago, after a ransom was air-dropped on to the vessel, maritime officials said on Sunday.

The bulk carrier Navios Apollon was seized about 1 300km off the Somali coast north of the Seychelles, while sailing from the United States to India with a cargo of fertiliser.

Andrew Mwangura of the Kenya-based East Africa Seafarers' Assistance Programme said: "The last gunman disembarked from the ship last night. She is steaming out to safe waters."

An unspecified sum of money was air-dropped on to the ship as a ransom, maritime officials and members of the gang said.

All 19 members of the crew, one Greek and 18 Filipinos, were safe, Mwangura added. The vessel is managed by a Greek firm, Navios Ship Management.

Al-Qaeda releases message from Italian hostage
[Maghrebia] On the eve of his threatened execution by al-Qaeda kidnappers, hostage Sergio Cicala was heard pleading for his life in an audio clip aired Sunday (February 28th) on Italian television, international press reported. AQIM, which is reportedly holding Cicala in the northern Mali desert region, set March 1st as the deadline for his life if demands for the release of Salafist prisoners jailed in Mauritania were not met. Cicala and his Burkina Faso-born wife Philomene Kabore, 39, were kidnapped in eastern Mauritania on December 18th.

It's my understanding that these engineers were taken from conquered societies and forced to design whatever their new overlords wanted. Do I recall correctly?

As for the collapse of various domes/minarets, can't these dorks just hold their prayer sessions at another venue?

#6  one of the great PC myths is the idea of the enlightened Muslims of the Caliphate making great discoveries while Europe was in the dark ages.

The advances in math and science as well as the technical feats were the products of the conquered non-Muslims. the zero was discovered by an Indian, Algebra developed by a Syriac Christian, and eyeglasses (i believe)by a Copt.

The end of the protracted warfare after the region fell under muslim control brought security (of a sort) to the area, and minds explored new areas. after a couple generations and conversion to Islam, the enforced 'non-think' took hold and the 'Golden age of the Caliphate' came crashing down. The entire economic system was totally dependent on the infusion of wealth (via war booty) and when they ran out of new lands to plunder the gig was up.

#8  The Umma's economic underpinning where slavery and ONLY slavery.

ALL their buildings where designed and erected by dhimmi(slaves) of Christian or Jewish origins.

When Spain's, France's and England's navies got strong enough to deny them the millions of slaves
they kidnapped from Europe and Africa, all their
empires collapsed as muslims are inherently
lazy and stupid.

Islam has the same corrupting effect on the mind as socialism...laziness and obfuscation,
resulting in wars, famines and pestilences!

Chanson d'automne

Les sanglots longs
Du Muezzon
De l'automne
Blessent mon cÂœur
D'une langueur
Monotone.

Tout suffocant
Et blême, quand
Sonne l'heure,
Je me souviens
Des jours anciens
Et je pleure,

Et je m'en vais
Au vent mauvais
Qui m'emporte
Deçà, delà
Pareil à la
Feuille morte.

Bangladesh
6 Hizbut Tawhid men held, one of them a woman
[Bangla Daily Star] Police arrested six operatives of Islamist outfit Hizbut Tawhid including a female Saturday night after they beat up at least 20 locals of Kushtia town.
Sound like either pretty tough operatives or Kushtia's populated by namby wimps.
The arrestees are Siddik Ali, 32, Hossain Ali, 25, Alyea Begum, 19, Ruhul Amin, 22, Abul Hasan, 20, and Shafiqul Islam, 23. They were taken to Kushtia Police Station for interrogation while the injured locals were admitted to a clinic in the town.
"So how'd youse guyz manage to beat up 20 people?"
"It wudn't us guyz! It wuz her!"
"That's a girl?"

According to police, a group of Hizbut Tawhid men gathered at its district office in the town to hold a secret meeting.
"Outta the way, locals! We're holding a secret meeting!"
They started a fight with some locals who challenged their identity.
"This is our territory! Who the hell're youse to hold a secret meeting here?"
At one stage the Hizbut men attacked the locals with hammers and left the scene.
"Look out! She's got a hammer!"
"Aaaaiiieee!"

On information, police rushed to the spot and took the wounded to a nearby clinic. Police in an overnight drive arrested the six from different parts of the town.
"Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!"
Officer-in-Charge of Kushtia Police Station Asaduzzaman told journalists that the arrestees had admitted their link with the organisation but claimed not to be involved in any militant activities.
"No, no! Certainly not!"

5,000 jihadi books, BCL hit list found in Shibir room
[Bangla Daily Star] Police seized over 5,000 'jihadi' (pro-Islamist uprising) books from a Shibir-controlled room at Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall of the university yesterday.

During the raid, the law enforcers also recovered a hit list of seven leaders and workers of the hall unit Bangladesh Chhatra League along with its action plan including attack on BCL men, one photo album, CD disks on campus violence and huge leaflets.

The hall sources said around 10:30 am police aided by the hall authorities raided hall unit Shibir Secretary Shariful Islam's room, which was used as Nomani Memorial Library and recovered the 'jihadi' books.

Ten Shibir-controlled rooms of the hall including the room of hall unit Shibir president Mujahidul Islam were also sealed off during the raid.

In another raid, RU Ziaur Rahman Hall authorities recovered a huge amount of iron rods, some hockey sticks, stones, sticks and leaflets from another Shibir-controlled room at noon.

In the afternoon, police also raided Amir Ali Hall and seized 500 Islamic books including some 'jihadi' books from 11 rooms of the dormitory.

The law enforcers sealed off the rooms including the room of the hall unit Shibir president after two-hour long raid ended at 7:30 pm.

Meanwhile, RU unit BCL yesterday set up an effigy of a Shibir man in front of the university central library and spat at the effigy as part of a protest programme demanding punishment to killers of BCL worker Faruque Hossain.

Bangladesh arrests Pakistan militant suspect
[Dawn] Bangladesh has arrested a suspected Pakistani militant and four of its own nationals who planned to carry out attacks in the country, a spokesman for the elite force that made the arrests said on Sunday.
"Mahmoud! Bring me a bag of number sevens!"
"Yes, Commander!"

Commander Mohammad Sohel of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said the five, aged between 26 and 30, were members of Jaish-e-Mohammad, a Pakistan-based militant group blamed for terrorist attacks in India. "They were picked up from a market in the capital Dhaka. The Pakistani citizen and four Bangladeshis have admitted of being the members of Jaish-e-Mohammad and they were planning attacks in the country," he said.
"Aaaiiieee! Yes! Yes! We were planning attacks in the country! Aaaaiiieee! We killed Jon Binet, too!... Aaaaiiiieeee! We were the second gunmen on the Grassy Knoll!... Make him stop!"
One of the four Bangladeshis has served ten years in prison in India, he added.
"Why do they call you 'Flat top'"?
"I told 'em I could do ten years in stir standin' on me head! They made me stand on me head the whole time!"

In November three Pakistani men were arrested in Dhaka on suspicion of plotting to attack US and Indian targets in the Bangladeshi capital.
"Hrarrr! We're gonna blow up U.S. and Indian targets! We're gonna... Oh. Hello, officers!"
Bangladesh has not witnessed any major attacks by militants since 2005, when a series of bombings shook the world's fourth largest mainly Muslim country. Since then, the RAB has arrested hundreds of members of militant outfits. At least six top militants have been executed and scores more sentenced to life terms.
And plenty of number 3's have died in 3 am 'encounters' ...
Those poor Number 3's -- all that ambition and potential wasted.

Great White North
Canadian guilty of planning homegrown terror plot
A member of a homegrown terrorist group pleaded guilty Friday to participating in a plot to set off truck bombs in front of Canada's main stock exchange and two government buildings.

Jahmaal James entered the plea Friday in an Ontario courtroom. James and 17 others were arrested and charged with terrorism offenses in 2006. The group came to be known as the Toronto 18. The group's members were charged with plotting to set off bombs outside Toronto's Stock Exchange, a building housing Canada's spy agency and a military base. The goal was to scare Canada into removing its troops from Afghanistan.

Having already served more than three-and-a-half years in pretrial custody, James was sentenced Friday to one more day.

"This was a very hard, arduous and difficult time for him but I think now he can look forward to sort of doing things differently," his lawyer Donald McLeod said outside court.

According to court documents, the Muslim convert traveled from Toronto to Pakistan to obtain paramilitary training in November 2005 but he fell seriously ill and the plan to carry out the training was disrupted.

"The (prosecution) does not allege that James actually received paramilitary training," prosecutor James Wakely said.

According to the statement, James became "disgruntled by the reckless manner" in which the Toronto terror group was being led. The court heard he severed ties with the group before his arrest on June 2, 2006.

"He still embraces the religion, but he realizes he may have aligned himself with a portion that was not really to his liking and that's what he disengaged from," McLeod said.

Last month, the mastermind behind the plot, Zakaria Amara, 24, was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty. The Jordanian-born Canadian citizen received Canada's first life sentence for a terrorism offense, and the maximum sentence under Canada's anti-terrorism laws.

As for the rest of the Toronto 18, one man has been convicted and six others, including James, have pleaded guilty.

India-Pakistan
Taliban claim responsibility for Karak suicide attack
[Dawn] The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility on Sunday for a suicide attack on a police station in Karak that killed 4 people including two policemen.

In addition to the dead, more than two dozen people were wounded, most of them police officers, when an attacker detonated a pick-up van on Saturday at the gate of the main police station in Karak.

"We have done this," Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq told AFP by telephone from an undisclosed location.

"Both the police and army are equal for us. Both are our enemies. They are responsible for the cruelties on us. We will carry out more such attacks against police."

Karak lies 150 kilometres (94 miles) southeast of Peshawar, the capital of North-West Frontier Province.

The Taliban have claimed and been blamed for most of the bomb and suicide attacks to have taken place in Pakistan. Such attacks have killed more than 3,000 people since July 2007.

Iraq
Hundreds of Children Found in Mass Grave in Kirkuk
Three mass graves were discovered in the sub district of Dubiz in Kirkuk. Announced the Kurdish daily news paper ASO on Sunday, Feb.21st. These graves are to be excavated by the Ministry of Anfaled and Martyrs of Kurdistan regional government in a near future.

"The graves are holding remnants of children from both Chamchamal and Garmyan areas". Sayd Fazil Amin the head of KRG martyrs office in Kirkuk told ASO, these kids were taken into captivity during 1988 Anfal campaign against the Kurds.

Anfal genocide was a campaign against the Kurds in 1980s. It was aimed at the elimination of the Kurds in Iraq, by destroying and burning Kurdish villages down. Killing and burying alive the people of these villages. It costed over 200,000 lives of innocent Kurds.

"Amanj, my 7 year old son, before taken away was very sick, I asked if I could go with him. They [soldiers] told me, do not worry we will put an end to his sickness, I know how they did it"
The media channels have not yet been invited to publish the unearthing of these three 'out of hundreds of' mass graves. We will soon invite the Arabic as well as other foreign media and officially announce the discovery, added Amin.

"We were jailed in a prison in Dubiz for a while. The only thing we knew then was that of, our crime was being a Kurd. In Dubiz they separated us into men, women and children" Bafraw, an Anfal survivor told Hawler Tribune, "Amanj, my 7 year old son, before taken away was very sick, I asked if I could go with him. They [soldiers] told me, do not worry we will put an end to his sickness, I know how they did it"

Kurds know all their beloved Anfaled ones are dead somewhere in the deserts of Iraq. All they are awaiting for is the return of their remnants. As said Bafraw "Ever since then I have been waiting for him"

A group of experts from ministry of Anfaled and Martyrs are to excavate these graves soon. The graves hold remnants of 272 children and the oldest one among them is a 16 year old girl. A pregnant woman is also among them, added Amin.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Jerusalem teeters on the brink of violent explosion
Israeli defense officials on Sunday warned that Jerusalem and the rest of Judea and Samaria are teetering on the brink of a new Palestinian explosion of violence, and charged "moderate" Palestinian leaders like Prime Minister Salam Fayyad with fueling the unrest.

Four Israeli police officers were wounded on Sunday while battling rioting Muslims atop Jerusalem's Temple Mount. The Muslims had attacked Jews and Christians visiting the site in protest over Israel's decision to add the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron and Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem to its list of national heritage sites. A day later, an Israeli security guard was shot and wounded in the nearby Jerusalem village of Silwan, known to Jews as the City of David.

Fayyad has publicly labeled the decision a "provocation," and Israeli officials charge that behind the scenes he and other Palestinian leaders are encouraging Palestinian youth to take part in anti-Israel demonstrations using low-level violence. That would fit with Fayyad's previous assessment that the Palestinians should return to "popular uprising" in place of organized terrorism, even while pushing for more Israeli concessions at the negotiating table.

Fearful of playing into Fayyad's hands, Israeli security forces have been instructed to practice extreme restraint in the face of Palestinians wielding stones, firebombs and even small arms. Riots in Hebron, Bethlehem and at the Temple Mount on Sunday have been put down with only minimal injuries. But that didn't stop Jordan's King Abdullah II, another regional "moderate," from attempting to make the issue cause for a broad Arab and international campaign against Israel.

Meeting with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in Amman on Sunday, Abdullah described the Israeli police's defense of Christians and Jews atop the Temple Mount as "aggression" and a "dangerous provocation." Abdullah urged the international community to mobilize against what he called Israel's attempts to overrun Muslim holy sites.

I am weary of hearing from "King" Ab and his Paleo princess. Of course the muzzle is off. He can speak freely and openly against Israel now that Barry is in the White House.

#2  Israel could put a stop to this right now by saying that, for every day a riot is fomented at al-Asqa, it will be closed for a week. And if another nation attacks Israel over al-Asqa, it will be razed.

But is anything making sense in that hell hole

#5  Since the Al Aqsa mosque is also the Temple Mount and the Jews were denied visitation for decades (and the Moslems have far holier locations, Even Mohamad called Jerusalem the city of the Jews) they could just say they are considering denying all access until they see some signs of peaceful intent from their Islamic neighbors.

#8  The solution to the Pale question? Give the West Bank back to Jordan. Except, they don't want them, either, which goes to show the level of hypocrisy in operation here.

However, for me at least, the queen is hot, and it's hard to dislike a king that once had a walk-on role on Star Trek.

Bomb maims villager in southern Thailand
A Buddhist villager lost his left leg and right arm when Muslim insurgents detonated a bomb Monday morning. Suchin Kongsaeng, 47, and six neighbours were walking to a rubber plantation in Borkor village in Tambon Kosit of Takbai district at 8:30 am when the explosion occurred. The blast amputated his leg and arm and the other villagers rushed him to the Narathiwat provincial hospital.
