-Short Attention Span Theater-
New Details Emerge about Heroine Munley and Her Training
Army police officer Kimberly Munley arrived at the scene of Thursday's shooting about seven minutes after it began, the head of Fort Hood's emergency service said today.

Munley was outside the Soldier Readiness Center building when the shooter, who officials say is Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, emerged from the building gun in hand, said Chuck Medley, the director of emergency services at Fort Hood.

Hasan ran toward Munley, firing at her, Medley said. Munley returned fire with her pistol, hitting him. Munley was shot in both legs and one wrist but is expected to make a full recovery, Medley said. He did not know how many times she was shot.

Hasan was shot four times, officials have said. He is reportedly in stable condition at an undisclosed hospital.
Good shooting, Officer Munley!
Medley said he visited Munley, 35, in the hospital early this morning and she was in good spirits.

"She's got some surgeries (ahead) but she's stable," he said. "She's the most upbeat injured person I've met."

He said the military is flying her husband, who is stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., to see her soon.

Munley is a civilian police officer with the Department of the Army and serves as a SWAT team member and firearms instructor for the department, Medley said. He said she joined the police force in January 2008 after serving in the Army.

Medley said the Army police department had been doing 'active shooter training' as a precautionary measure since the 2007 mass shooting at Virginia Tech University in which a student killed 32 others before taking his own life.

"When you have an active shooter hurting people, our protocol is to move to the threat and eliminate it. That takes some courage and skill," he said. "If there was a person there to respond, Kim Munley is the one we would want to be there."

Some of Munley's training in how to respond to a mass shooting came from instructors from a Texas State University-San Marcos program called Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training.
This is where I live, and this is a BIG thing for this town
The program, known as ALERRT, teaches police officers and first responders how to engage "active shooters," gunmen whose only intention is to kill.

Commander Terry Nichols of the San Marcos Police Department, who is also an ALERRT instructor, said Munley was part of a group of U.S. Department of the Army police officers who were trained by ALERRT instructors in Killeen. He said Munley attended a class in San Marcos as well.

"First responders have to be ready to engage the shooter, that's what she did," Nichols said of Munley. "She almost sacrificed her life to save others."

ALERRT has trained about 20,000 officers in building entry techniques and rescue and survival strategies, how to deal with explosive devices and in other methods to take on active shooters.

Patrol officers are taught the kind of tactics usually given only to SWAT and the military, including how to get past a barricaded door safely and how to work in low light. Part of the training simulates what it's like to be fired upon in combat -- something many police officers never encounter until it's actually happening,

The idea behind the training was to teach patrol officers how to to take on such shooters or at least minimize the damage until SWAT teams arrive. The methods were developed by members of the Hays County Sheriff's Department, who joined with Texas State in 2004 for research support.

ALERRT has a training facility near the San Marcos Municipal Airport. Officers take classes, fire weapons at a shooting range, practice breaching various types of doors and train in a makeshift house, complete with old furniture and wall decorations. Tuition for the two-day, 16-hour basic course in San Marcos is free, thanks to grant money.

"The training we started in San Marcos was able to help this police officer stop violence, we're very proud of that," Nichols said.

One Gun Bought Legally At Killeen Store
Law enforcement officials say a 5.7-millimeter pistol used in the Fort Hood shooting rampage was purchased legally at a Texas gun store.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.
Then why are they discussing it? I mean, I appreciate the information, but even so.
Records indicate Hasan bought the FN 5.7 at store called "Guns Galore" in Killeen, Texas, well before the attack that left 13 people dead. The pistol has been dubbed a "cop killer" by those who have tried to stop its use.

The most powerful type of ammunition for the gun is available only to law enforcement and military personnel. Gun control advocates call it a "cop killer" weapon because that ammo can pierce bulletproof vests, and its use by Mexican drug cartels worries police.

#1  That works out to .225, not familiar with that as a Pistol caliber, I recently got to see a .17 cartridge, now that's a nasty small slug, BP Vests wouldn't slow it down a bit.

#2  The media is right. The guns ARE cop killers! They sneak out of the store at night, hunt down the poor police officer and shoot them dead! Just like a snipe hunt! Just more of the anti gun media bullshit. If this guy did this off post where everyone carries a gun he would be swiss cheese and the Texans would be calling it target practice!

#3  FNH USA makes this 5.7 x 28 pistol. I saw this in Rifleman a a couple of years ago and was intrigued by it. Indeed the 17 cal. is nasty. Not a big slug but a killer.

Afghanistan
NATO Soldiers are Missing as Taliban Reports Recovery of Two Bodies
KABUL -- Two NATO soldiers are missing in western Afghanistan, and an intensive search mission is under way, a spokesman for the international forces announced here Friday, as a Taliban spokesman said fighters had recovered the bodies of two drowned soldiers.

The soldiers were on a routine resupply mission on Nov. 4, but did not return as expected. When soldiers are missing, the concern is that they have either been captured or killed. "We continue exhaustive search and rescue operations to locate our missing service members. We are doing everything we can to find them," said Capt. Jane Campbell of the United States Navy, a spokeswoman for the international forces.

The Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, speaking by telephone, told the Reuters new agency that the bodies of the drowned soldiers had been recovered on Wednesday in the western Badghis Province. Reuters also reported that the province's police chief, Abdul Jabar, said the two were Americans and that they had drowned during a gunbattle

The last time a soldier was reported missing was on June 30 in eastern Afghanistan. Weeks, later, the Taliban posted a 28-minute video on jihadist Web sites in which the soldier, Bowe R. Bergdahl, identified himself and said he was captured when he lagged behind on a patrol. There has been no public word on his status since.

NATO also announced the death of three troops, including two American soldiers who died after two roadside bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan on Thursday.

[Quqnoos] Villagers in southern Afghanistan say that foreign troops have killed nine civilians, including children, in an overnight strike on Wednesday.

The attack happened in Babaji village of Lashkarga, capital of southern Helmand province on Wednesday night. But government officials and the task forces in Helmand province while confirming the air strike say that only Taliban militants have been killed in the attack carried out by international forces.

Helmand provincial governor's spokesperson, Mohammad Dawod Ahmadi, said that eight militants had been killed and denied that the strike caused any civilians death.

The villagers drove the bodies to the capital Lashkargah said that the strike happened at 7:00pm while the people were harvesting. The angry people called on the government to oust foreign troops from their areas and were chanting "death to America".

"Two of children are among the dead," a protester said.

Video footage shows that at least two teenagers have been among the killed ones and people around the bodies were asking in tears that look "are they Taliban or civilians."

Spokesman for Task Force in Helmand, Lt Col Wakefield the attack carried out after precise reports from the area and killed eight militants who were involved in laying mines.

Bangladesh
4 injured in bomb blast at Gulistan
[Bangla Daily Star] At least four people, including two Awami League leaders, were injured yesterday afternoon in a bomb explosion at Gulistan in front of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra office.

Neither the law enforcers nor the victims could ascertain the motive behind the attack.

The law enforcers failed to collect any evidence from the spot near the Awami League central office.

The injured were identified as Sheikh Nazrul Islam, 43, Bagerhat district AL leader, his friend Nasir Uddin, 44, Kachua upazila unit AL joint secretary, Abdur Rashid, 58, a former accountant of PWD, and shoe factory employee Kartik Das, 40.

All the injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

DMCH sources said tiny pieces of broken glasses were found in the flesh of the wounded people.

Injured AL leader Nazrul Islam said, "We heard a big bang and then I found blood spurting from my body."

Other injured Rashid and Kartik said they were hit by shrapnel as they were waiting for buses at around 2:30pm.

Contacted, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nur Mohammad told The Daily Star, "The motive behind the explosion and the persons behind the attack could not be known immediately."

Major MM Shafiqur Rahman of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-3) said, "We are yet to make sure if the bomb was exploded on any of the injured people."

"So far we have not been able to collect any evidence from the spot and none has been arrested in this connection, he said.

Plot to attack US embassy unearthed
[Bangla Daily Star] Detective branch of police Wednesday night arrested three suspected Lashkar-e-Taiyeba (LeT) leaders from a madrasa in Chittagong in connection with a plot to attack the US embassy in Dhaka.

The detained are identified as Mufti Harun Izahar, 33, son of Mufti Izaharul Islam who is the ameer of a faction of Islami Oikya Jote, Shahidul Islam, 26, and Al Amin alias Saiful.

They have reportedly worked also for Harkatul Jihad al Islam (Huji), another banned Islamic outfit.

One of the arrestees has claimed that he hailed from Bhola district while another from Mymensingh. But they could not show any documents, DB sources said.

Deputy Commissioner of DB (South) Md Monirul Islam told The Daily Star that they had picked up the militants from Lalkhan Bazar Madrasa located on the top of a hill and founded by Mufti Izahar.

The arrestees were taken to Dhaka last night and would be produced before court today.

The DC also said they had caught the LeT men on information provided by an Indian born US national and a Pakistan born US national. They were arrested in the US recently on charges of attempt to attack on the establishments including embassies of the US, UK and India in different countries.

Monirul Islam also said they have the evidence that all the three suspected militants have visited the US embassy area last week as part of their attack plan.

Replying to a query, he also said Pakistani nationals Abdur Rahman, detained in Pakistan this week for militant link, and Abdulla Rehan have transferred Tk 6 lakh to the account of Mufti Harun's brother Faizur Rahman.

The DC said the arrestees had made several calls to some Pakistani militant leaders over their cellphones.

During the primary interrogation, all the three persons admitted their Huji links as well as with the LeT, DB sources said.

DB also said that the madrasa at Lalkhan Bazar played a leading role in putting a bounty on the head of late poet Shamsur Rahman in 1998.

Yet another woman outlaw held
[Bangla Daily Star] Police arrested another suspected woman cadre of outlawed Gono Mukti Fauz (GMF) from a house of Aruapara in the town yesterday, in a second incident after police launched a drive to nab women armed cadres of outlawed parties.

She was identified as Nahid Parvin Champa, 23, daughter of Abu Bakar Siddik, a cadre of GMF.

On Wednesday, police arrested Baishakhi Rahman Chumki, 22, a suspected female GMF activist, less than 48 hours after the arrest of Mahila Awami League (AL) town unit general secretary Taslima Khan Ankhi, her accomplice Rani and three other top cadres of GMF.

Police said the relation among the top brasses of the outlawed parties and the women was confirmed through checking the mobile phone call list of Ankhi and Rani.

Sources in the police said a good number of women involved in outlawed party activities are either members of mainstream political parties or maintain relations with influential political leaders.

Police also said they raided a house owned by Tushar around 3:00pm following information gleaned from Ankhi and arrested Champa where she took shelter to avoid arrest.

Later, Chumki also provided more information about their activities and on some women involved with their ring.

Though police got the names of two sisters -- Champa and Nasrin -- of Aruapara, the latter remains untraced.

Meanwhile, Ankhi and Rani with their three accomplices are being interrogated by district police after Kushtia chief judicial magistrate court placed them on a five-day remand on Wednesday.

"The outlawed outfits are using women -- a safe medium for preserving and transporting their weapons to different places, just before any 'operation' by the outfits," said Alamgir Hossain, assistant police super (headquarters) of Kushtia, also the coordinator of the drive.

According to sources, at least 25-30 women, using veil (Burkha), are active in the outlawed parties' network in the district.

Women cadres reached weapons in a number of killing missions, including Bheramara AL leader murder on August 26, where Chumki carried weapons, police said.

Different sources, including the police, confirmed that a few women are also just used for 'entertainment'.

Asked, Kushtia Police Super Sahabuddin Khan told The Daily Star no political figure can influence their job.

Police seal off Hasan's Killeen apartment
Bell County SWAT teams barricaded and evacuated a downtown Killeen apartment complex where Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan lived before authorities say he killed 13 people and injured 30 more during a massacre at Fort Hood Thursday.

Temple police secured Hasan's residence at Casa Del Norte apartment complex on N. Fourth St. around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

A Killeen police SWAT team converged on the apartment in the evening and blocked the apartment complex with the department's armored vehicle. Officers flanked the vehicle and roamed the streets, while they waited for Fort Hood investigators to arrive and process the scene.

In the morning, neighbors said Hasan handed Qurans and donated his furniture to anyone who would take it.

Neighbors described Hasan as a quiet man who began wearing "Arabic clothing" in recent weeks. Edward Windsor, a neighbor, never suspected Hasan was in the Army. Hasan's rank surprised Windsor who would never have imagined an officer with a rank of major would have lived in an apartment that rents for $350 and houses soldiers ranked as private first class.

"For his rank structure, it'd be highly unlikely for him to live here," Windsor said.

#6  YS - From my own experience (26 years in the Air Force) about the only military who are armed on a US military base are the gate guards (Fort Hood was an open base - no gate guards) and select people guarding highly sensitive areas. After this, that may (and perhaps, should) change.

Sgt Munley did exceptionally well under incredibly difficult conditions.

(Ok, I'll make a slight exception for SWAT-type guys, who really can knock someone off with one bullet to the heart from a hundred yards away if conditions are right. But even they would have a helluva time trying to do that if they were under fire, were trying to take someone out who is actively killing innocents and/or had been shot themselves.)

Fort Hood suspect shouted religious slogan before firing
FORT HOOD -- An Army psychiatrist about to be deployed to a combat zone overseas shouted a religious slogan in Arabic before fatally shooting 13 people -- including 12 soldiers -- and injuring 28 others at this sprawling Central Texas military post on Thursday. Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, the base commander at Fort Hood, said on NBC's Today Show that witnesses heard Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan shout "Allahu Akbar!" before opening fire. The phrase means "God is great!" in Arabic.
Anyone surprised? Didn't think so.
The death toll rose by one overnight when one of the wounded died. Today, Col. John Rossi said all the wounded were in stable condition, including the suspect and the policewoman who shot him. Identities of the dead and wounded were not released this morning as notification of family members continued, Rossi said.

Hasan is accused of attacking his fellow soldiers about 1:30 p.m. at the Soldier Readiness Processing Center, where troops waited to see doctors as they prepared to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan -- or return from combat. Armed with two pistols, he shot more than 40 people before military police and civilian police officers responded, officials said. He was wounded by a civilian policewoman, who was injured in the exchange, police said. The assault lasted about 10 minutes, Rossi said.

Hasan's motives were unclear, and early on Thursday, he showed no signs of worry or stress when he stopped at 7-Eleven for his daily breakfast of hash browns, said Jeannie Strickland, the store's manager. "He came in (Thursday) morning just like normal," she said.

However, surveillance video showed he was wearing religious attire rather than typical civilian or medical clothing. Strickland said that was unusual and she asked him about it, but he replied that he did that sometimes.
Apparently that had become his standard garb a few weeks previous, although it's not clear whether that was just his new version after-work sweats, or if he wore it to work as well.
A few hours later, officials said, the Virginia native began his rampage on the post. Fort Hood, near Killeen, is the largest active duty post in the United States, with 340 square miles of facilities and homes. More than 50,000 military personnel and about 27,000 family members and civilian support personnel live and work there.

Calling it a "terrible tragedy," Cone, the post commander, said officials "believe the evidence indicates it was a single shooter." Cone did not speculate on a motive, but the Army released a statement saying the shootings didn't appear to be an act of political terrorism.
I think I'll leave out what I think about THAT statement....
The man was forty, unmarried, socially awkward, and fairly universally disliked. The kind with a potential for violent explosion irrespective of religious fanaticism, so that was a reasonable first assessment. Given what they now know, the Army's unofficial view has changed, I'm sure.
Two others were questioned and later released.

Federal law enforcement officials told the Associated Press that Hasan had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats. One of the Web posts that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.

"To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause," said the Internet posting. "Scholars have paralled (sic) this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers."

The officials say Hasan appeared to have made the postings, but they are still trying to confirm that he was the author. They say an official investigation was not opened.
Somebody needs to lose their job over that decision
No, it's not right to proceed without better information than that. And until the FBI investigators did, they couldn't go ask his colleagues about the man...
Killeen police officials late Thursday said their officers were at Nidal's apartment on the outskirts of Fort Hood. "We do have officers up there assisting the federal agents," said Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith. Smith also said that the department's SWAT officers were sent to the apartment.

#1  Hasan is accused of attacking his fellow soldiers

It's a travesty to call this POS a 'soldier'. He may have been the Army and he may have been an officer, but a 'soldier' he is not. He's nothing but a coward, the same as his jihadist brothers who maim and murder in the name of their evil religion.

#3  Since the base was virtually unarmed the anti-gun narrative doesn't really play. The media will be reluctant to play up the Islamic angle. I suspect we'll here a lot about the policeWOMAN who shot him and stopped the rampage as the media tries to frame the story in an politically acceptable way.

#4  The only surprising thing in the story is the 7-11 store manager is white (or black).

As a veteran, I have to say that if I ever heard another officer say in my presence they were glad some soldiers were killed, the discussion would get very serious, very quickly. And it would not end with a shoulder shrug and an "Oh Well!".

#7  The phrase means "God is great!" in Arabic

That is well understood by now.

Everyone is surprised by how far Hasan got before he was shot down. Until they hear that practically nobody had a gun, except for security. And Hasan, whose posession of same was a criminal act. Nobody is acting surprised that there have been no random shootings and gun related crime, despite the fact that they assumed everyone there carried a gun.

Speaks volumes.

#8  This POS enlisted in the Army after High School specifically to get the benefits, got college and medical school paid for, and used the Army for a comfortable, sweet ride. He didn't join to serve, he joined to get, and when after six years at Walter Reed doing a poor job, he got transferred to Ft Hood and faced the deployment (to a cushy job at a medical facility in country I might add) he suddenly revealed his Palenstinian roots and went all Muslim-offended by harrassment and insults, and sued to get out of the Army and pay back all the student debt from private practice. When that tactic didn't work and the time to actually serve came due, he went all Jihadi.... This POS was never IN the Army, he just USED the Army.
Now we get to be treated to a month of trial and testimony about his terrible life being a victim of all the anti-Muslim racists in America.
The only good news is that at the end of the day the Army really will hang him at Ft. Leavenworth!

#9  I heard this POS's cousin talking about the harasment this a$$hole put up with. Looked up SGT. Hasan Akbar - of the fragging incident in Kuwait, pre-Iraq invasion. His mom said basically the same thing. This is just page one of the jihadi playbook - claim victim status. I'm hoping for sepsis.

#10  Islam and the US Constitution are incompatible. So is Islam and military service, except in a few exceptional cases. The fraggings, shootings, and other hostile acts by muslims in the US military only tend to highlight these facts.

The US Constitution guarantees religious freedom: Islam doesn't allow other religions.

The US oath of enlistment/commissioning requires that the person "swear or affirm" the protection of the Constitution, and to obey the lawful orders of those appointed over them. Islam requires that the person commit themselves totally to Islam, first, last, and always.

The entire "taqqiyah" thing makes a mockery of any oath a muslim may swear.

Our Constitution and the body of laws created to implement it states that all people must be treated as equals under the law, yet Islam says that only Muslims are "pure", and all others are "infidels" and must be killed.

With this in mind, it would be very hard for me to accept, without significant reservations, ANY muslim in the Armed Forces. I know there ARE exceptions, and each one of them is a valued part of the overall military team. Still, there should be no blanket acceptance of muslims in any role. Let the good ones prove their goodness through both their words and their deeds. In so doing they will help isolate those that are like Maj Hasan, and will possibly help prevent another such atrocity.

Massachusetts man faces new charges in terror plot
A pharmacy college graduate was indicted Thursday on new charges in an alleged terror plot to kill two prominent U.S. politicians and shoot people at American shopping malls. Tarek Mehanna, of Sudbury, Mass., is accused of conspiring with two other men — Ahmad Abousamra, who authorities say is now in Syria, and an unnamed man who is now cooperating with authorities.

Authorities said the men tried to get into terrorist training camps in the Middle East. When that failed, they allegedly talked about killing two members of the executive branch and plotted to randomly shoot mall shoppers. They also allegedly talked about killing U.S. soldiers in Iraq. The 27-year-old Mehanna was arrested Oct. 21 on a charge of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.

The 10-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury and released by the U.S. attorney's office also charges Mehanna and Abousamra with conspiracy to kill in a foreign country, conspiracy to provide false information to law enforcement and making numerous false statements to law enforcement.

Mehanna is being held without bail pending a detention hearing scheduled for Nov. 12. His attorney, J.W. Carney, declined to comment Thursday on the indictment. After Mehanna's initial court appearance last month, Carney said he was "confident that the American people will put aside their fears and instead rely on the fairness guaranteed by our Constitution."

In a memorandum arguing for Mehanna to be held without bail while awaiting trial, federal prosecutors contend that because the new charges carry a possible life sentence, there is a serious risk that Mehanna will flee, as Abousamra did.

Prosecutors said Mehanna traveled to Yemen to seek terrorist training and also tried to support al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations by translating and distributing videos and text that were "intended to inspire others to participate in jihad."

The memorandum listed several pieces of evidence to support the government's claim that Mehanna should be detained, including a copy of a CD he allegedly gave to a cooperating witness that contained data files depicting violent jihad training; a copy of a poem entitled "Make Martyrdom What You Seek," written by Mehanna under an alias; and material taken from a hard drive on Mehanna's home computer that included a file called "39 Ways to Serve and Participate in Jihad" and photographs of Mehanna at ground zero.

Mehanna received a doctorate in 2008 from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston and taught math and religion at a Muslim school in Worcester.

Authorities said he and the two other men never came close to pulling off an attack. The men allegedly told friends they were turned down for terrorist training because of their nationality, ethnicity or inexperience and that the people they'd hoped would get them into such camps were either in jail or on a religious pilgrimage. Federal prosecutors said the men abandoned plans to attack malls because their weapons contact said he could find only handguns, not automatic weapons.

Mehanna was first arrested last November and charged with lying to the FBI in December 2006 when asked the whereabouts of Daniel Maldonado, who is now serving a 10-year prison sentence for training with al-Qaida to overthrow the Somali government.

Gunman kills 12, wounds 30 at Fort Hood
Continues from yesterday...
An Army psychiatrist opened fire Thursday at Fort Hood, Texas, killing 12 people and wounding 30 others before being shot to death, officials told NBC News.
A statement on the teevee a few minutes ago said he was still alive, in custody...
Eleven of the victims died at the scene, military officials said. A 12th died later at a hospital, NBC station KCEN-TV of Waco reported.
Number's now at 13...
NBC News' Pete Williams reported that U.S. officials identified the gunman as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist who had been promoted to major in May. Defense officials said Hasan, 39, arrived at Fort Hood in July after practicing for six years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, which included a fellowship in disaster and preventive psychiatry.

Hasan was scheduled to be deployed to Iraq on Nov. 28. Hasan was reportedly "pretty upset" about his deployment orders.
Hasan was scheduled to be deployed to Iraq on Nov. 28, officials said. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said military officials had told her that Hasan was "pretty upset" about his deployment orders.

The Associated Press, quoting federal law enforcement officials, said Hasan had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats. The officials said they were still trying to confirm that he was the author.

One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog item that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

Medical records on file in Virginia, where Hasan was born and was registered to practice, and Maryland, where he received his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, revealed no disciplinary actions or formal complaints.

Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of the Army's III Corps, said the gunman used two handguns.

Two other soldiers were taken into custody after the shooting. Rep. John Carter, R-Texas, said they were released, but later in the day law enforcement officials told Carter that another person had been detained for questioning.

A senior administration official told NBC News that the shootings could have been a criminal matter rather than a terrorism-related attack
A senior administration official told NBC News that the shootings could have been a criminal matter rather than a terrorism-related attack and that there was no intelligence to suggest a plot against Fort Hood.

Military and local hospital officials said the victims were a mixture of men and women, military and civilian. At least one of those killed was a civilian police officer, Cone said. At least four local SWAT officers were among those wounded, KCEN reported.

'They shot me!'
Among the wounded was Pfc. Keara Bono, 21, of Independence, Mo., who was shot in the shoulder. She called her mother, Peggy McCarty, to let her know she would be OK.

Bono, who works with soldiers dealing with stress, arrived in Fort Hood only Wednesday from her previous posting in Topeka, Kan., NBC station KSN-TV of Wichita, Kan., reported. Her brother, Dustin, told the Kansas City Star that Bono was "mad more than anything."

"They shot me! And I'm still here in this country!" Dustin Bono quoted his sister as saying.

#3  Some aspects of the story that still don't 'fit' to me:
1) How is a guy who supposedly didn't even like to go the the range for his minimal qualifying manage to become so proficient as to be able to fire so effectively?
2) How did a guy manage to fire two handguns until empty, reload both, and continue firing while in a room full of trained and fit soldiers? I'm not even talking about who was armed and shooting back - it had to be close range where people could just charge him and tackle him (like those kids did at that school in Oregon a few years back.) Was his target group a unit of mental health professionals and not regular soldiers?
3) How did the flagrant warning signs get ignored?
4) Some of the wounded may have been cross-fire casualties, and MPs and SWAT people were among the victims - meaning the episode took a considerable length of time, and he could not have been catching later victims by surprise, nor should he have been more heavily armed than the counterattackers by then. Did he have human shield hostage(s)?
5) The 'cousin' who was interviewed by phone on Fox last night ended his call very abruptly - was he real or fake?

APHC leader placed under house arrest
[Dawn] Authorities in occupied Kashmir have placed senior Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, under house arrest and heavy contingents of Indian police have been deployed outside his residence.

According to Kashmir Media Service, a spokesman of the forum patronised by senior Kashmiri Hurriyet leader Syed Ali Gilani, in a statement issued in Srinagar, the arrest was made to thwart his Kulgam programme where he was scheduled to address a public rally tomorrow (Friday) in the third phase of his agitation against the occupation of Kashmiris' private land by troops.

However, he criticised the authorities saying, 'Our rallies are always 100 per cent peaceful so there is no reason why we were being stopped from conducting such programmes.'

The spokesman said the Kulgam programme would be held as per schedule, adding that the veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader would address the gathering and announce the next programme for Kupwara.

'Right of self-determination is the only logical solution to end the Kashmir dispute and our peaceful struggle will continue,' he added.

Militants blow up girls' school in Khyber
[Dawn] Militants blew up a girls' school in the Khyber district on Thursday, the second such attack in the region in four days, officials said.

'Militants used 25 to 30 kilograms of explosives to blow up the two-storey school on the outskirts of Bara town,' local administration official Farooq Khan told AFP.

Khan said the school had 26 rooms in all, including a science laboratory, adding that the explosion completely destroyed eight rooms.

Another senior administration official Shafeer Ullah confirmed the incident.

The new attack came four days after twin bombs ripped through an 18-room government high school for girls at Kari Gar village in Khyber wounding four people in neighbouring homes.

Militants have destroyed hundreds of schools, mostly for girls, in the northwest of the country in recent years.

Nearly 200 schools were destroyed in the Swat valley alone during a two-year Taliban uprising to enforce sharia law in the district.

Authorities last month shut schools across Pakistan following a suicide attack on a university campus in Islamabad, although most have since reopened.

Pakistan arrests three suspects in Iran bombing
[Al Arabiya Latest] Pakistani security forces on Thursday arrested three Iranians suspected of planning a suicide attack in Iran's southeastern region last month which killed 42 people, officials said.

Mainly Shiite Iran says the Sunni rebel group Jundollah (God's Soldiers), which has claimed responsibility for the Oct. 18 attack, operates from across the border in Pakistan.

The attack in Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan province killed 15 Iranian Revolutionary Guards, including six senior commanders, and 27 others.

The ethnic Baluch men were arrested by the paramilitary Frontier Constabulary troops in a raid on Thursday in Turbat, a district in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province on the Iranian border, intelligence and paramilitary officials said.

"They are Iranian Baluch and are suspected to be involved in the planning of the suicide bombing in Iran last month," an intelligence official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. He gave no further details.

The arrests came two weeks after Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar visited Pakistan to demand it hand over Abdolmalik Rigi, the militant group's leader.

Pakistan has condemned the bombing and vowed to help Iran track down those responsible, but says Rigi is in Afghanistan, according to their information.

After the attack, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, spoke on the telephone and stressed the need for cooperation in confronting and eradicating "criminal terrorists".

Pakistan launched a long-awaited offensive against militants in its northwest on Oct. 17 after a string of bomb and suicide attacks rocked the country, including one on the army's headquarters early that month.

Iran-Pakistan ties have generally been good recently, but tension has risen since Iran said the October attack would affect relations and some Revolutionary Guard commanders have said they should be able to pursue Jundollah in Pakistan.

Iran accuses the United States and Britain of backing Jundollah and has suggested it has links with Pakistani intelligence. Washington, London and Islamabad have all denied involvement.

Army captured Laddah Fort, 28 militants killed
[Dawn] Troops captured the strategically located Laddah Fort in the Mehsud heartland on Thursday.

'It's a major success,' a security official told Dawn. In early 2008, about 300 security personnel had remained under siege in the fort for 40 days when an operation against Baitullah Mehsud was under way.

They had repulsed 14 major attacks by militants amid fears that a hostage situation and a massacre could take place if the fort collapsed.

The fort, which lies on the main route connecting the area with Wana, Kaniguram and Makin, was eventually ceded to Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan for setting up a dispensary in exchange of safe withdrawal of the marooned security personnel. According to the official, 28 militants were killed on Wednesday and Thursday and five others were captured.

Four soldiers and an officer were killed and two others were wounded in a blast in Sararogha.

The official said the operation was progressing well. He rejected Taliban's claims about having made a tactical retreat and said that anyone making a tactical withdrawal would not leave large quantities of arms and ammunition.

About the Taliban claim that security forces had walked into a trap, he said the reality was the other way round. 'The strategy of first capturing heights in the mountainous terrain is working well.'

He said the retreating militants would not succeed in moving out of the area in large numbers and would eventually have to face troops.

Besides capturing the Laddah fort, troops have also secured the northeastern area of Shashak and cleared Bangel Khel. According to the ISPR, the area around Asman-Manza road up to Gadawai has also been cleared and troops are consolidating their positions.

Militants fired rockets at Mangora Sar and Ghundai Gar and during an encounter seven militants were killed.

On the Jandola-Sararogha axis, troops are consolidating their positions around peaks.

On the Razmak-Makin axis, security forces conducted a search and clearance operation in areas around Spin Qamar, Wucha Kauna Algad and Lugar Manza. A large quantity of arms and ammunition has been seized.

Meanwhile, nine truckloads of ration and 7,641 cash cards have been distributed among displaced families of Waziristan.

US drone kills four in NWA
[The News (Pak) Top Stories] Four persons were killed when a US pilotless plane struck a house with missiles in Naurak village of North Waziristan Agency on Thursday.

Tribal sources said the CIA-operated drone fired two missiles at 1:25 am at a house of a tribesman named Musharraf in Naurak, 12 kilometres from Miramshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan, killing four persons.

The political administration confirmed the attack but denied any casualties. However, independent sources confirmed the killing.Unnamed security officials were quoted by the foreign and local media as claiming that those killed were militants.

Figures of six and seven casualties were also given by different media organisations. These reports also mentioned that some other persons were injured in the missile strike.Sources in the village, however, insisted that only four persons were killed. The names and identities of those killed weren't available.

Villagers said two vehicles parked in the house were destroyed in the attack. The sources said the area was sealed off by the militants and irrelevant people and reporters were not allowed access to the spot.

Hakimullah warns Taliban fighters against fleeing
[The News (Pak) Top Stories] Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Hakimullah Mehsud has urged his fighters to stand fast against the military offensive in South Waziristan, warning them in an intercepted message obtained on Thursday that cowards will go to hell.

"Remember this is the commandment of God that once fighting starts with the enemy, you cannot leave the battlefield without permission from your commander, and don't look for excuses to run away from the fighting," Hakimullah told his followers in a speech on Tuesday broadcast over a wireless radio network. Of those, who do run away, he warned, "Such people will go to hell."

The intelligence officials shared a recording of the speech with The Associated Press, to show that the militant leader is concerned about desertions in the ranks. "We are in Jihad and we should not pay heed to the whispers of Satan. We should sacrifice our lives for Islam so that we can feel pride on the day of judgment," Hakimullah said.

Irfan Burki & Daud Khattak add from Wana and Peshawar: Twenty-eight militants and five soldiers, an officer among them, were killed as security forces continued battling their way into the Taliban strongholds of Ladha and Makeen on the 20th day of the operation Rah-e-Nijat in South Waziristan on Thursday.

Five more militants were arrested while two soldiers suffered injuries in clashes with the insurgents, claimed the military officials, who said the troops were consolidating their positions in areas vacated by the militants.

Taliban, on the other hand, said their withdrawal from their former strongholds was tactical and that they were planning to launch scattered attacks on security forces. Talking to a local journalist by telephone from an undisclosed location, Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq admitted they had vacated some areas but under a strategy. He claimed that they had started attacking security forces from Wednesday and their men had carried out some attacks in different areas of Ladha and Makeen.

Both sides were issuing conflicting claims about gains in the fighting. Earlier, the Taliban had admitted the death of only 11 of their men since October 17, while the death tally among the Taliban by the Army troops since that period has surpassed 400.

The political administration officials said the troops had advanced some 30 kilometres from the Wana direction so far. They had captured some strategically important areas of Ladha Tehsil, which will facilitate their advance on the town.

According to officials, security forces have got control of Garde Serai mountain after consolidating positions in Ladha and the freshly captured Ladha Fort, which was abandoned by the Frontier Corps (FC) after immense pressure from the militants more than a year ago.

Sources said the FC fort was mostly destroyed by the militants, but its capture would leave considerable psychological effects on the advancing troops and the retreating militants. A clash was reported in Shamerai village near the Ladha bridge. Officials said seven militants were killed and some others sustained injuries in the firefight. They said the rest of militants fled the scene.

The troops also captured Sheen Sar and the Hanrai Tangi area in their advance from Jandola towards Srarogha. From the Razmak side, the troops have seized the control of Panj Plorai and Ashkar Kot to reach the Taliban stronghold of Makeen.

A statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said a blast near Srarogha killed five soldiers, including one officer. Two more soldiers suffered injuries. The explosion occurred as the troops were busy in a clearance operation and consolidating their positions on the Jandola-Srarogha axis.

The troops have captured the areas of Shashak and Bangalkhel on the Shakai-Kaniguram axis. Seven militants were killed in retaliatory fire from security forces in Mangora and Ghundai Ghar. The troops secured the road from Asman Manza to Gadawai, said the official statement.

Security forces conducted a house-to-house search in Spin Kamar, Wucha Kauan, Algad and Lugar Manza on the Razmak-Makeen axis. Five militants were killed in a clash in the Lita Sar area on the same axis. Arms and ammunition were also recovered during the search.

I presume he will be demonstrating leadership and showing them how it's done? Like William Wallace?

#2  Brave Sir Robin ran away.
Bravely ran away, away!
When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Sir Robin!

Egyptian forces shut down Gaza tunnels
[Ma'an] Egyptian authorities raided three tunnels and seized a large number of goods in the Gaza Strip on Thursday morning, Egyptian security forces said.

Egyptian forces said they raided the Gaza-Egypt border after receiving a tip off concerning the location of three illegal smuggling tunnels. The Egyptian forces additionally seized a car loaded with glass blocks near the tunnels in question, they said.

The second tunnel was discovered inside a storehouse belonging to Ayoub Halaweh near the Salah Ad-Din border, sources added. After storming the warehouse, Egyptian forces stated that they located the tunnel and large quantities of iron and cement that were prepared for smuggling.

The third tunnel was discovered near the border but no goods were found.

#1  Can't help but think Israel should take the front in volunteering Mossad and training to these hinterland areas. Yeah it would be a propoganda tool for the Jihadi but the Israeli's experience can't hurt and it would help provide some good public relations for nations that otherwise couldn't find Israel on the map.

Fort Hood MP Tells His Story Of Being On Scene
FORT HOOD -- Accounts are starting to emerge from Thursday's shooting at Fort Hood, from first responders to health care providers at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center.

Sgt. Andrew Hagerman, a Fort Hood military policeman, escorted in a police car the first ambulance on scene. That ambulance would transport Kimberly Munley, the first officer to respond who shot the suspect, Maj. Malik Hasan.

Munley was shot, too, and Hagerman said it was in the upper leg and thigh region. He didn't know how many times Munley was shot, he said today.

Hagerman was also on scene as medics treated Hasan. He said the suspect was unconscious and in handcuffs, and they were then removed so care could be administered. Hasan's two handguns were laying on the ground beside him, Hagerman said.

He pointed out that regardless of whether Hasan was a suspect, the medics did what they had to do to save a life.

The sergeant is a soldier in the 89th Military Police Brigade who has deployed to combat in 2005 and 2007, and described the scene as controlled chaos.

When Hagerman first heard shots, he said his ears perked up and he started moving toward the fire. A soldier's training comes into play, he said. "That's what you do. That's what you're trained for."

There were a lot of moving pieces at the scene, with soldiers helping other soldiers, he said. Though he wouldn't identify what unit patches soldiers at the site wore, he said they were from across Fort Hood.

Hagerman described the scene in relation to what he's seen in combat and said one wouldn't usually see that many dead and wounded, adding it is expected "more in combat than you do here."
