Afghanistan
Simple Afghan mission turns deadly for U.S. soldiers
Duty. Honor. Country.
May their commander-in-chief figure it out soon.
The mission was simple. Some 20 U.S. soldiers were to patrol a riverbed in the dead of night, camp until morning, and provide backup to Afghan troops and their Canadian mentors in a clearing operation in Chahar Bagh village, an insurgent hotbed on the outskirts of Kandahar City.

Less than 12 hours later, seven of the soldiers and their Afghan interpreter would be dead, killed by a massive homemade bomb buried deep under pebbles along the dried-out riverbed.

The attack illustrates how a more aggressive U.S. military strategy of going into Taliban strongholds risks mounting casualties as President Barack Obama weighs whether to send thousands more troops to Afghanistan. The initial operation this week passed without incident. Around 200 Afghan soldiers and their Canadian trainers pushed through the village of mud houses surrounded by lush pomegranate orchards. A handful of men were arrested for later questioning.

If I may;
NERO - as in Emperor who fiddled while Rome burned. Not to be confused with a misspelling of the work "Negro", which often times elicits emotional responses as seen above.

#11  And of course Nero used the fire as an excuse to launch a horrific campaign against Christians, whom he made a convenient scapegote for the disaster.

Then he cleared the ruins and expanded his personal palace significantly at public expense.

#12  Nine We Play 4 Keeps
lyrics
Now the streets I run
Is the streets I'm from
And the streets you run
Is the streets you from
And this is for the borough
Verse 1:
I roam in the jungle and
rumble with thugs and
hoods that rob for goods
Weed smokers and
murderers and relations
My daily operation
caucasions hit me wit
persuasions
Be all you can be, fuck that
Be on the block, sell rocks,
stay strapped
Ready to cock back and
blast for my respect
Never neglect and watch
out for my Tech
I got trouble, mad trouble
I drink too much, that's
when I don't give a fuck
who I buck
I get sideways and take it to
the highways
Killin' liars twistin' niggers
like pliars
Day to day strugglein'
jugglein'
Wonderin' where the next
meal comin from
Never happen, nay mean
I'm playin' for keeps that
means I'm keepin' my
cream
We play for keeps
Me and my peeps we run
these streets
We play for keeps
Don't sleep when we creep
Lose your head piece chief
Bring beef lose teeth
We play for keeps x2
Verse 2:
Brand new apparrel on my
ass on the regular
Skypager new ride
equipped wit a cellular
Big ass piece of the pie till I
die
Play for keeps no lie,
wonderin' why
Niggas aint got no
opportunity
Niggas aint got no fuckin
unity
Every man for himself and
kill a man wit the ball
Drink a little Hennesy and
go A-wall
Fuck the bullshit, glock
shots spit where I rest at
Got me asking niggers
where you buy that vest at
Leave my front door like
I'm ready for war
I'm ready to die sometimes,
I can't take it no more
My mantality is twisted
I'm forever blunted forever
wishin' to get lifted and
splifted
I love these streets
That's why a nigga like Nine
play for keeps
We play for keeps
Me and my peeps we run
these streets
We play for keeps
Don't sleep when we creep
Lose your head piece chief
Bring beef lose teeth
We play for keeps x2
Verse 3:
Dark mass forever until the
day I'm gone
I'm gonna put in on my
people
Save it for the sequel, the
root of all evil
Is fillin' up my pocket
makin' me lethal
Only the good die young so
I'm bad as fuck
Pass the buck and be shit
out of luck
Niggas know the routine,
we got it down pat
You ain't getting jack if
your pocket ain't fat
So phat out the realness,
you could feel this
Goin' insane me can't deal
wit diss
I'm under pressure
The ghetto got my mind in
a daze
Duckin' strays, knowin' that
crime pays
Always and forever picture
perfect
Not the Mona Lisa, cuttin'
up niggas like pizza
In slices devices of war
make me hardcore
Over rough beats I play for
keeps
We play for keeps
Me and my peeps we run
these streets

Mauritanian authorities question suspect in Tourine troop beheadings, Leggett murder
[Maghrebia] The primary suspect in the June 2009 murder of American teacher Christopher Leggett was taken to Mauritania's National Security (DGSN) headquarters for additional interrogation, ANI reported on Wednesday (October 28th). The transfer of accused terrorist Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Ahmednah from the Nouakchott Central Prison was reportedly prompted by the recent arrests of five presumed al-Qaeda members. Ould Ahmednah is also suspected of involvement in the kidnapping and subsequent beheading of 11 Mauritanian soldiers in Aklet Tourine in September 2008.

Arabia
Saudis being dragged into Yemen war
Slowly but surely, Saudi Arabia, which has traditionally shied away from conflict in favor of diplomacy and buying its way out of trouble, is being dragged into the Middle East's conflicts as a participant.
Welcome to the sandbox. Grab a pail and a shovel.
It's happening in Iraq and Iran, but right now the main hotspot is Yemen, the poorest country on the Arabian peninsula, wracked by tribal insurrection, southern secessionists and a resurgent al-Qaida.

Things are so bad in Yemen, the most populous country on the peninsula, that it is in danger of collapsing as a state with its wars and insurrections spilling over into Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil producer.
But don't worry. Cap and Trade will grease our way to oil independence.
The Saudis have backed Yemen's beleaguered president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, in his five-year war with Shiite Zaidi rebels in the unruly north, centered on Saada province.

His government in Sanaa says the tribesmen are backed by Shiite-dominated Iran, Saudi Arabia's main rival in the oil-rich Gulf, and its proxies in Iraq and Lebanon.
But The One is talking to Iran and extending the hand of peace to them. There MUST be some misunderstanding.
Tehran denies that. But Sunni-dominated Yemen said in August that it had captured Iranian-made arms, including machine guns and battlefield rockets, from the rebels and intercepted a boat carrying six Iranians, possibly agents or military instructors, off Yemen's coast.
Lonely Planet guidebook was a bit murky here. Guys got lost.
According to Arab officials and Western intelligence sources, the Saudis, who don't want Iran stirring up trouble on their porous southern flank, have been financing Saleh's counterinsurgency campaign to the tune of millions of dollars a week.

There have been repeated reports, largely from the northern rebels who are known as al-Houthis after the clan leading the rebellion, that the Saudi military is aiding Saleh's poorly trained and badly equipped forces with airstrikes against rebel strongholds along the mountainous border.

On Oct. 19 the insurgents claimed Saudi ground forces in the Hasama border region bombarded the main market town
with machine gun and mortar fire. Authorities in Sanaa deny any Saudi involvement.

According to Texas-based security consultancy Strategic Forecasting, "Yemen and Saudi Arabia are now seeking out mercenaries, particularly from Ukraine, to fly Yemen's Soviet-era MiGs and Sukhois in hopes of regaining the upper hand against the al-Houthis and their Iranian backers in this proxy war."
Wonder if they Yemenis bought some ground crews for the jets.
Saleh's forces, ill equipped and poorly paid, have fared badly against the rebels since he launched a major scorched-earth offensive against the al-Houthis in August, supposedly on the ground they broke a cease-fire agreement but more likely because Saleh feels a need to assert his authority as the state falls apart.

In those circumstances, Saudi backing is vital if he is to cling to power and ensure that his son Ahmed, a general who commands the army's special forces, is to succeed him.

Egypt, another Sunni-led Arab state that opposes Shiite Iran, is also reported to be aiding Saleh with arms shipments. According to Strategic Forecasting, "The Egyptians are pushing for sustained airstrikes in … Saada province, greater U.S. assistance and replacement pilots for Yemen's air force.

"The Saudi leadership is expected to consult with the United States on the matter, but efforts already appear to be under way to place more capable pilots in Yemen's combat jets."

A failed attempt by a Yemeni al-Qaida operative to assassinate the Saudi prince who heads the kingdom's counterinsurgency campaign in the Red Sea port of Jeddah on Aug. 17 heightened alarm in Riyadh about the prospect of Yemen falling apart.

The Saudis fear that al-Qaida, which has been rebuilding its forces in eastern Yemen after its campaign in Saudi Arabia was crushed in 2006-07, would exploit the chaos to launch a new offensive against the al-Saud monarchy.

The Saudis also seem to be taking a tougher line over Iran. The disappearance and possible defection of an Iranian nuclear scientist in Saudi Arabia in early June was the first known incident of its kind to occur in the kingdom.

It pointed to a possible joint operation between Saudi intelligence and the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency to get their hands on an Iranian with inside knowledge of Tehran's reported drive to acquire nuclear weapons.

If so, that would be a first. Saudi intelligence, which played a key role with the CIA in arming Islamist guerrillas against the Soviets in the 1979-89 Afghan War, is also now reported to be aiding dissident forces inside Iran to counter Iranian encroachment in Iraq as U.S. forces withdraw.

Yemen seizes Qaeda suspect among six Somalis
[Al Arabiya Latest] Yemen has arrested six Somalis, one suspected of having links with al-Qaeda, the interior ministry announced on Thursday.

The arrests took place in Mokha, in the Red Sea province of Taez, a couple hundred kilometers (miles) from the Somali coast, a statement said.

One of the men, Nur Omar Warsamah, is suspected of ties to al-Qaeda, and a computer and rubber stamps from a charitable organization in Mogadishu were seized at his home.

The statement did not say what led to the arrests, but authorities frequently round up refugees from Somalia to interrogate them.

Yemen has also attracted hundreds of thousands of Somalis seeking security and a better life after fleeing a country torn by fighting between government forces and an Islamist insurgency.

Al-Qaeda has suffered setbacks due to U.S. pressure but its presence in Yemen threatens to turn that country into a dangerous base for training and plotting attacks, a top U.S. counterterrorism official said last month.

Among the concerns are al-Qaeda's links with hardline Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab, which has attracted hundreds of recruits from around the world, said Michael Leiter, director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan finds passport of 9/11 suspect: report
[Al Arabiya Latest] Pakistani forces found a passport of an Islamist militant linked to two hijackers involved in the Sept. 11 attacks during an offensive against Taliban strongholds near the Afghan border, a TV station said on Thursday.

The passport of Said Bahaji, a German of Moroccan origin, was among documents, weapons and jihadi literature seized by the government forces during their operation in South Waziristan and was shown to a group of journalists during an official trip.

"The passport shows he reached Karachi just days before 9/11," Dawn News said, showing a passport purportedly belonging to Bahaji.

Military spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas, who accompanied the reporters on the trip to South Waziristan had no comments to offer.

"I haven't seen the passport. These reporters may have seen it."

Bahaji's name appeared in the 9/11 Commission Report.

The report said Bahaji spent eight months with hijackers Mohamed Atta and Ramzi Binalshibh between Nov. 1998 and July 1999.

"Described as an insecure follower with no personality and with limited knowledge of Islam, Bahaji nonetheless professed his readiness to engage in violence," it said.

Atta and Binalshibh used Bahaji's computer for internet research as evidenced by documents and diskettes seized by German authorities after the 9/11 attacks, the Commission said. Binalshibh was arrested in Pakistan with the help of FBI and CIA in 2002.

Educated in Morocco, Bahaji returned to Germany to study electrical engineering at the Technical University of Hamburg. He spent five months in the German army before obtaining a medical discharge, the Commission said.

11 Taliban killed in Operation Rah-e-Nijat
Eleven more terrorists have been killed in the ongoing Operation Rah-e-Nijat in South Waziristan, while one soldier was martyred and two others sustained injuries, an ISPR press release said on Thursday.

Security personnel consolidated their positions on the Jandola-Sararogha axis and cleared Inzar Kallay of mines, improvised explosive devices and bobby traps. Five terrorists were also killed in Zariwam. On the Shakai-Kaniguram axis, security forces advanced towards Kaniguram. A terrorist training centre was discovered in the northwest of Khaikaeh Narai. The army killed six terrorists and destroyed four bunkers in Kaniguram. On the Razmak--Makeen axis, the army secured Sharakai Sar, Pakalita and Manza Sar.

Separately, during Operation Rah-e-Raast in Swat, security forces arrested four suspects from Nawakilli. The forces also seized the driver of terrorist commander Hussain, along with his vehicle, from Balogram. Forces close in on Srarogha
[The News (Pak) Top Stories] Security forces were only a few kilometres from Srarogha, the stronghold of the Hakimullah Mehsud-led militants, on the 12th day of the operation Rah-e-Nijat in South Waziristan Agency on Wednesday.

Sources said some militants were fleeing to North Waziristan from the Srarogha side and via the Shawal Road from Makeen due to increased pressure from the advancing troops.Local sources said the troops were heading for Srarogha after getting full control of Kotkai and securing the surrounding areas and ridges.

"The next important point is Srarogha, where a tough battle is expected once the troops get close," said a political administration official, who did not want to be named. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said 25 militants were killed and a huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered. Five soldiers suffered injuries in the clashes and in attacks from the militants in different areas, it added.

The ISPR said security forces made considerable progress on the Kotkai-Srarogha axis and secured the area overlooking the Taliban stronghold of Srarogha. Eight militants were killed and three soldiers sustained injuries in engagements in that area.

The statement said 25 Taliban training centres and nine caves were destroyed in Kotkai while another three training centres were overrun in the Murghaband area. According to tribesmen, the village of Kaniguram on the Shakai-Kaniguram axis is a strong base of militants, where mostly Uzbeks were based. The troops secured an important area of Karwan Manza, located two kilometres east of Kaniguram.

The capture of Karwan Manza can also help the troops in securing Karama, which is located southeast of the Kaniguram-Kotkai axis. The ISPR said Karama was the stronghold and training centre of foreign militants.

Security forces continued a search for militants and arms in Nawazkot, the village located on the Razmak-Makeen axis and believed to be an important place from the security point of view.

Local sources said that security forces would be able to capture the high points of Asman Manza after getting control of Kaniguram, which is under siege. Control over Asman Manza and Karwan Manza would enable the troops to advance on Kokatkhel, Karama, Delay, Mashta, Badar and other areas of Tehsil Ladha and Sarwekai, the sources said. They added that troops were busy removing landmines from the Ladha Road.

The sources said six militants were killed and four injured in a clash with security forces in the Sherkot area. They said the troops' advance was steady and they were likely to seize Srarogha in the next few days.

They said fighter planes bombed the Taliban hideouts in Ladha, Maidan, Patwelai and other areas, but there were no reports about casualties. Director General ISPR Maj-Gen Athar Abbas, while addressing a press conference in the federal capital, said Uzbek fighters had made Mehsuds and other tribes hostage, adding that Mehsud tribes were not linked with these foreigners. "As soon as the area is cleansed from terrorists, including foreigners, the Mehsud tribesmen will return to their area to resume their own system," he said.

Answering a question, the military spokesman said through interceptions, it was confirmed that TTP commander Waliur Rehman was present in the area but nothing could be said about Hakimullah Mehsud.

He rejected the impression that the Taliban had made tactical withdrawal from Kotkai to launch another assault, saying that the Taliban leadership was on the run. Answering another question, he said the US-led Nato forces had re-adjusted some of their security posts close to the border with Pakistan. He, however, said Pakistan was still awaiting details sought by it on the re-location of these security posts.

The DG ISPR said the operation against the militants enjoyed public support as well as the support of tribesmen. About the terrorists arrested so far, he said they would be tried by civilian anti-terrorist courts.

Iraq
Iraq arrests senior officers over blasts
[Al Arabiya Latest] Iraq arrested dozens of security officials over bombings that killed 155 people and vowed to arrest more security officers suspected of colluding with the bombers or dereliction of duty, an official said on Thursday.

Two-high profile attacks over the last two months have raised pressure on Iraq's developing military and police, which are taking over security from U.S. troops as Washington draws down ahead of an eventual pull-out in 2011.

" The commission of inquiry into the double attack on Sunday ordered the arrest of 11 officers of various ranks and 50 members of the security forces responsible for the protection of Salhiya "
Army spokesman General Qasim Atta
Those arrested were deployed in the Salhiya section of the capital where the devastating suicide blasts on Sunday targeted government buildings and wrought havoc in the streets, said Atta, spokesman for Baghdad military command.

"The commission of inquiry into the double attack on Sunday ordered the arrest of 11 officers of various ranks and 50 members of the security forces responsible for the protection of Salhiya," he said.

The health ministry said on Thursday the toll from the attacks claimed by al-Qaeda but blamed by the government on members of the outlawed Baath party stood at 153 people killed and more than 500 wounded.

Among those arrested, said Atta, are four senior army officers and seven senior policemen, including the chief of police of Salhiya under whose jurisdiction the justice ministry, one of the targets of the attacks, falls. Also rounded up, he added, are the commanders of 15 security checkpoints in Salhiya.

Baghdad's governor, Salah Abdul Razzaq, on Monday blamed negligence or even collusion by the security forces for the bombings in the heart of the capital, Iraq's deadliest day in more than two years.

"It's a human failure... It can only be negligence or collusion," Razzaq told AFP, noting that footage showed a white Renault truck carrying two tones of explosives driving up to the justice ministry building.

The logo of the Department of Water in Fallujah, a former insurgent bastion west of Baghdad, was painted on the side of the truck, he said. "How did it get from Fallujah to here?"

Trucks are barred from entering Baghdad, especially Salhiya neighborhood, during daylight hours.

Razzaq said that the vehicle that was blown up in front of the other target, a provincial government building, was a Kia minibus.

Defense ministry spokesman Major General Mohammed al-Askari told AFP earlier this week that security forces raided two houses in Baghdad, where they found bomb-making materials, and made arrests, but did not specify how many.

"It looks like the same materials used on Bloody Wednesday," he said, referring to August 19 bombings at government ministries in Baghdad that killed around 100 people.

Askari said the evidence found confirmed the bombers were linked to al-Qaeda and supporters of the Baath Party of ousted dictator Saddam Hussein.

De facto military court sentences PA policeman to death for treason
[Ma'an] Ma'an -- A de facto government military court in Gaza issued its second death penalty ruling in as many months on Thursday, sentencing an Az-Zaitun resident to death by firing squad.

The convicted, identified as 35-year-old Abed Al-Karim Mohammad Al-Abed Sharir, worked for the Palestinian Authority police in Gaza, and was found guilty of treason under articles (131/a), (140/b), (148) of the Palestinian Revolutionary Law (1979).

Mohammad was also found guilty of manslaughter under articles (378/ a) and (88/a) of the same code.

According to article (415) of the penalty procedures (3) for the year 2001, the court said, his punishment would be death by firing squad and can be petitioned.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights earlier noted that the 1979 Palestinian Penal Law "is the Revolutionary Penal Code of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). It is unconstitutional within the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) as it has not been presented to, nor approved by, the legislature."

The U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) recently demonstrated autonomous operations by multiple "swarms" of unmanned air and ground vehicles, unattended ground sensors, video cameras and other devices linked together in an intelligent network powered by EdgeFrontier platform technologies from Augusta Systems, Inc.
The demonstrations were held at a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) facility on Wallops Island, Va.

"This capability of managing multiple swarms of unmanned vehicles and sensors is a significant achievement," said Patrick Esposito, president and chief executive officer of Augusta Systems. "Working with Augusta Systems and its partner, Vector Research Center, NAVAIR demonstrated autonomous operations of multiple, cooperative swarms, including options for dynamic redirection of assets between the swarms."
