RJ - the medical examiner has to do that. I've often wondered how they count the exact number of stab wounds when there are that many - they must overlap. A lot.

oooh...
She used a screwdriver.
She didn't stab her "partner" directly after ordering a nice tall cool screwdriver...
I find that tidbit both fascinating and puzzling. Seems curious to specifically mention a Phillips-head vs just stabbed with a screw-driver. Is there some significance I'm missing?
Robert Furman, a civil engineer who helped round up German scientists suspected of building the atomic bomb for the Nazis during World War II, has died. He was 93.
Furman died Oct. 14 of metastatic melanoma, the New York Times writes in his obituary today.
As chief of foreign intelligence for the U.S. bomb project in the last two years of the war, Furman coordinated the kidnapping of German scientists, including physicist Werner Heisenberg. Eventually, Heisenberg and nine other scientists were spirited out of Soviet reach and into a detention center in France called the Dustbin, according to the Times.
Under German sniper fire, Furman and his team also seized 31 tons of uranium ore in Belgium that was eventually shipped to the U.S.
Furman worked closely with Nobel Prize-winning physicist Luis Alvarez to track down German nuclear activity. They searched for heavy water water containing a heavy isotope of hydrogen used in the making of bombs in the Upper Rhine and Lake Constance between Germany, Switzerland and Austria, Los Alamos lab historian emeritus Roger Meade told the Times.
Furmans spy team, code-named Alsos, ultimately found that Germanys bomb project wasnt as advanced as the U.S. had believed. Instead of being two years ahead, they were two years behind, historian Robert S. Norris wrote in Racing for the Bomb, according to the Times.
Jamaican-born disco diva Grace Jones said she was sorry Hillary Clinton had failed to make the cut in the US election and that she "can't stand" folksy vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
The 1980s style icon, now 60, told German magazine TV Spielfilm Wednesday that Palin stood for a backward vision of America laden with government restrictions of sexuality and social behaviour.
"I would have loved it if Hillary Clinton had pulled it off," Jones said, in an interview published in German marking the release of her new album. "I can't stand Sarah Palin. I bet a woman like that has no sense of humour."
The androgynous Jones, who conquered dancefloors and runways from New York to Paris in the 1980s and had star turns in blockbusters alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Roger Moore, said she believed in her own form of sexual liberation.
She said she had fallen afoul of feminists for stunts such as "appearing naked in a cage" but insisted she had the right to determine what was artistic or simply exploitative. "I believe a woman can present herself as a sex object if she has fun doing it," she said.
The statuesque Jones attributed her own dominant image to the influence of her grandfather, who served in World War I. "He was strict, even frightening," she said. "Sometimes I think I am possessed by him."

Your opinion of most anything that I can think of is about as useful to me as used toilet paper, Ms. Jones. I didn't know who you were before and not interested in learning any more about you. Don't get me wrong, I am very interested in many people's opinion of Sarah Palin, but they have some knowledge or expertise that will help expand my understanding of her. Just because you are a starlet of some sort doesn't make you a sage on matters outside your field. So, like the used toilet paper, I take your comments, discard and flush. Sorry if I seem a little rough on you, but I've had it with entertainers who spout off on politics or science, exposing me to a disgusting amount of arragant ignorance.

Why do lefties hate Sarah so much? I've never seen a good explanation. Is it just because she is a strong independent woman who doesn't fit the NOW mold?
#9
Geez, Grace, where you been for twenty friggin years? I thought you killed yourself when they closed Studio 54?
Who we gonna hear from next who doesn't like Palin? Mr. Kotter? Horshack?
Simple. NOW, Emily's List, the academic feminists, etc., have built a political model in which they claim to represent the very large majority of women in this country. It's not really true of course but they've managed to sell it inside the beltway. Because they claim to speak for women, politicians have to respect them and their (potential) power.
Condi Rice shook that some.
Sarah Palin would shake it a whole lot more. The NOW can't claim to speak for 'all' women when you have a Vice-President Sarah Palin who is conservative, pro-gun, anti-abortion, pro-family, and a skilled hunter.
Palin undercuts -- no, destroys -- their ability to make political hay in the Beltway. And that's why they went after her.

Why do lefties hate Sarah so much? Some hate all strong believing Christians. A lot of people base their hate of the Republicans on the Christian right, others have abandoned McCain because Palin was brought on board (note the Christian right love her).
Books could be written, and probably have, on where the hatred comes from.

Well put to all of you. I am FAR from the so-called 'Religious Right' and I LOVE Palin. Strong, Independent, Life-Loving and Affirming. I vote for her more than I vote for McCain. Before her I was voting against Obama. It's nice to vote FOR someone as opposed to voting AGAINST someone.

Shelly Mandell the (soon to be ex-) President of the LA chapter of NOW introduced Sarah Palin at a campaign rally a couple of weeks ago. Naturally, it got about zero coverage in the MSM.
OCALA - Twice the temperature dipped to freezing at the Ocala International Airport early Wednesday before it began making a gradual climb to the mid-60s. GORE TO CLOSE FOR OBAMA IN FLORIDA...
Temperatures in the Ocala area dipped into the mid-30s overnight.Though there was a reading of freezing or below throughout northwest Marion County, Wednesday morning's official low temperature was 33 degrees. It was a record for Oct. 29 and the second lowest temperature ever recorded in October since 1850. Ocala's official weather site is at the city water treatment plant on Southeast 24th Street.
Until Wednesday, Oct. 29's record temperature was 37 in 1943 and a close second was 38 degrees in 1957. "It did hit 32 degrees in October 1989," said Mike McAllister, a National Weather Service meteorologist who spent Wednesday morning searching databases to gather official October weather records for Ocala.
The low temperature at unofficial sites owned by private citizens - who then make the readings public on weather Web sites, such as Weather Underground - ranged from 29 degrees in Shady, an area southeast of Ocala, to 36 degrees in southern Marion.
In almost every area of the county at daybreak Wednesday, frost - which came six weeks early - glistened on grass and rooftops. The average first frost in Marion County is Dec. 10, officials said. An early frost can be good in some situations and bad in others.
David Holmes, Marion County's extension agent, said Wednesday that typically an early freeze is good news for hay producers. That's because a freeze often kills harmful pests, mainly the dreaded armyworm, which often eats the grass that farmers turn into hay. An early freeze helps reduce the armyworm, which are larvae that turn into caterpillars that move in groups to find food and cause damage to grass along the way.
Due to dry conditions, the armyworm was already not expected to present a big problem to hay producers.
Marion County has not seen much rain since Hurricane Fay in August. Since Aug. 22, there has been only 4 inches of rain, half the normal average. "Because of the drought, we have not seen the armyworm like we have in the past," Holmes said.
Holmes said owners of plant nurseries covered plants overnight and that he didn't expect any crops to have been damaged by the frosty weather. He said time will tell what kind of damage may have been done to private home gardens. He said some crops, such as green beans and tomatoes, likely would not have survived if they were not covered. Meanwhile, local and state officials said the early frost could mean an early start to the wildfire season.
Bart Walker, a Marion County Fire Rescue division chief, said the frost was not enough to create a threat in the thick underbrush common on the forest floors. "We may see more grass fires," said Walker, adding that grass fires usually do not typically begin until December after the first frost.
Florida Division of Forestry's Gary Beauchamp, supervisor of the Waccasassa District, which includes Marion and Alachua counties, agreed. However, he said if the region begins getting rain that the grass could begin to grow again, especially if temperatures climb back to average or above average. "It could green back up," he said.
For now, Beauchamp said, it will be a wait-and-see game. "It all depends on what happens in the next two to three weeks," he said.
Today the high temperature is expected to climb to 70 degrees. For Friday through the weekend, the lows are expected to be in the mid-50s and the highs in the mid-70s, the National Weather Service predicts.

Snow flurries throughout the night and early morning caused numerous delays for travellers using Switzerland's rail system on Thursday. A heavy, wet snow snapped trees, which fell across tracks. The most affected regions included Zurich, Schaffhausen in the north and the areas around the Gotthard pass in central Switzerland.
Passengers moving between Spiez and Interlaken south of Bern were forced to take buses when rail service there was interrupted around 7am. Broken branches and trees blocked roads.
Farmers in the Bernese Oberland also awoke to snow-related problems. Damaged fences allowed their cows to wander freely.
According to MeteoNews, the Swiss lowlands received the most snow for any October since records began. Zurich received 20cm, beating a record of 14cm set in 1939.

They only have snowfall records for *Switzerland* going back to *1931*? What the fuck? That's the heart of Europe, where they haven't had a war since the first decade of the 19th century! There are good American weather records going back to the 1760s in New England!
Something stinks in this story.

Mitch, I read that as the previous record for October snowfall in the Swiss lowlands was 14 cm in Zurich in 1939. I'm sure the monasteries were keeping some sort of record starting at least in the High Middle Ages.

Yes, they were TW. In fact if you get your hands on a copy of the History Channel program Little Ice Age, Big Chill, they in fact cover a bit about Swiss monastery records and how cold it was [although in the end they undermine the program with the usual quip to Global Warming in the last 10 minutes].

My one trip to Switzwerland, 1985, was interesting because we were there for the largest snow fall in Geneva in 50 some years. Interesting because I didn't know that Geneva doesn't get much snow at all because of it's lack of elevation. In fact they had just sold off most of their snow removal equipment the year before. 30" of snow screwed things up good and proper. Plane from Zurich was cancelled and we caught the last train that made it.

Perhaps he means that if the Helvetti were allowed their route through Allobroges we wouldn't have the dire problems we have today, like trains delayed by snow, hate, and ice cream which melts.

This is good news for the Swiss tourist economy. I was skiing in Crans-Montana (thats in French-speaking Switzerland) last year and the snow conditions were pretty terrible. As a more-or-less annual Swiss visitor (Ive visited three times in the last five years), I can tell you for a fact that their ski-based tourism has been on the decline due to lack of snow fall. Finances willing, Im hoping to go back next year. So I say: Excellent!
A certain number of the Swiss blame this on the much vaulted global warming phenomenon. The more thoughtful simply call it bad weather.

And only genuine Southerners - which you most certainly are NOT - are allowed to use "y'all." With non-Southerners, it's mere pretention.

sadly, I won't send money to help them because I suspect it will never get to those who need it.
The words "Nigerian" and "steal" seem to have married in the past ten years, haven't they?
(SomaliNet) Three Nigerians have been detained after forging the governor's signature to try to steal $27 million from its international account, Ethiopia's central bank, the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), said on Tuesday.
According to the bank, it was informed by Citibank earlier this month of a $27 million drop in its account. "NBE immediately brought to the attention of Citibank, it had not endorsed any payment and that larceny had happened," it said in a statement. Citibank returned the money and a probe ensued.
"Three Nigerian nationals were detained as they allegedly went to a bank in South Korea to withdraw the $27 million, under a forged signature of Tekelewold Atnafu, the governor of NBE," the Ethiopian central bank said.
Ethiopia's foreign deposits are used to pay debt and government procurements, the statement said.

A Bogra court yesterday sentenced two leaders of banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 10 years' imprisonment for possessing explosives and bomb-making materials.
Special Tribunal Judge Khalilur Rahman handed down the verdict to Ashraful and Abu Taher. They were also fined Tk 5,000 each. If they fail to pay, they will have to serve one more year in jail.
According to the prosecution, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested the two militant leaders on January 21, 2006. Acting on their painfully extracted statement, the Rab members also seized a huge quantity of bomb-making materials kept under the ground at Bamunia village in Shahjahanpur upazila.

I happened to kyack past the croc whilst it was hanging around Horseshoe Bay recently....it's got big teeth...so we decided the pub was the safest spot to be.
President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday directed the Sindh government to arrest the culprits involved in Tasleem Solangi's murder case and a report be submitted to him within 24 hours. This picture's ugly on so many levels, starting with the poor girl having dogs set on her and being shot to death as a matter of "honor."
Pak police are apparently enjoined from noticing any crime committed in their districts, to include murder most foul, unless there's been a FIR submitted in quadruplicate and signed by the aggrieved party or their duly authorized representatives. If not, there has been no crime committed.
The Neanderthals inhabiting Pakistain seem to compete with each other in the extremes of mindless brutality they can achieve. Each passing year brings new depths of depravity. We can't even call them "primitives," because with the possible exception of cannibals there doesn't appear to be that much brutality common among genuine primitives.

Muslims in Malaysia may be barred from the ancient practice of yoga if they engage in Hindu "religious elements" during the exercise, a top Islamic cleric said on Wednesday. They kinda have a point there. Yoga's pretty Hindooey.
Controversial cleric from the northern Perak state, Harussani Zakaria, said the government-backed National Fatwa Council would soon release a decree, or 'fatwa', which would decide if Muslims were allowed to practise yoga. "If it involves any faith or religious elements it is definitely not permissible but if it is just a form of exercise that is all right," Harussani said. "Muslims cannot practice yoga in its original form because it involves another religion," he said in response to a call to ban Muslims from engaging in yoga.
Zakaria Stapa, a professor in the Islamic faculty of the National University of Malaysia, had called on Muslims to stop practising yoga, saying it could cause them to "deviate from their faith", news reports said on Wednesday. Muslims in Malaysia practised yoga not just for exercise but also as part of the growing urban lifestyle and involved "chanting mantras while in various positions", he said.
"Why should we look for other alternatives to exercise and search for peace? Yoga could cause (Muslims) to stray from their faith because its movements are according to the style and traditions of Hinduism," he said.
The fatwa council, one of Malaysia's highest Islamic bodies, last Friday banned women from dressing or behaving like men and engaging in lesbian sex, saying it was forbidden
by the religion.
