Afghanistan
Suicide Bomber Kills 3 Afghans in Kabul
Afghan officials say a suicide bomber has killed three people in the capital of Kabul, while fighting intensified with Taliban militants in the southwestern part of the country. Police in Kabul say the bomber exploded his car near a coalition military convoy as it traveled down a busy street. The blast killed three bystanders, including a child. A coalition spokesman, U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Dave Johnson, says none of the soldiers were hurt.

In southwestern Farah province, police officials say Afghan and NATO forces inflicted heavy casualties in clashes with Taliban militants. They say Afghan troops surrounded the Taliban as they gathered in the Bala Buluk district. NATO forces then called in an airstrike. Afghan officials say 30 Taliban militants were killed. Two Afghan soldiers and a policeman also died in the clash.

Somali Opposition Splits Amid Conflict
Divisions within Somalia's Eritrea-based opposition group have turned into an open conflict amid reports the faction headed by hard-line Islamist leader Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys is seeking to remove moderate Islamist Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed as chairman. Aweys supporters say the move is in response to Ahmed's acceptance of U.N. efforts to initiate peace talks with Somalia's Ethiopia-backed interim government.

The deputy chairman of the Islamist-led opposition Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia, also known as ARS, tells VOA that he and many others in the group are supporting Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys' call to replace the current chairman. The deputy, Jamaa Mohamed Khalib, says Chairman Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed crossed the line when he sent a delegation to Djibouti earlier this month to participate in the U.N.-mediated peace talks, even though Ethiopia, which many Somalis view as an occupying power, has not withdrawn its troops from Somalia.

The pullout of Ethiopian troops had long been a key ARS condition for the start of any talks with Somalia's secular transitional federal government, which took power from the Islamists in late 2006 after a U.S.-supported Ethiopian military intervention.

Khalib says Ahmed had no right to begin negotiating openly without first forcing the Ethiopians to leave Somalia. Khalib says the opposition general assembly - made up of Islamists, former parliament members and members of the Somali diaspora - will vote on June 15 to remove Ahmed from his post.

Meanwhile, Ahmed and the leader of the ARS general assembly, Sharif Hassan Sheik Adan, are in Yemen, reportedly receiving advice from senior Yemeni officials about how best to proceed toward direct negotiations with the Somali government. Ahmed declined to speak to VOA about the growing rift within ARS, but earlier this week, Ahmed accused Eritrea of meddling in the group's affairs.

The two top Islamists in ARS, Ahmed and Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, had an uneasy alliance in the Islamic Courts Union before the movement was ousted after six months in power. The men fled to Eritrea, where they established the opposition group last September. From Asmara, the ARS has led a bloody 16-month, anti-Ethiopian, anti-government insurgency that has killed thousands of people and has displaced more than one million others.

Somali pirates hijack two more ship in Gulf of Aden
(Xinhua) -- Kenya's maritime official confirmed late Thursday that Somali pirates have hijacked two more ships in the Gulf of Aden. Andrew Mwangura of the East Africa Seafarers Assistance Program told Xinhua, "The vessels were seized on Wednesday where the Dutch-owned vessel was hijacked on Monday. We have not received any information concerning the crew members and their nationalities," Mwangura said by telephone.
Betcha they're not Frenchies...
He also said he has no information on who owns the MV Lehmann Timber and the MV Arena or demands by the pirates.

Somali authorities have publicly blamed Western firms for paying hefty ransoms thus encouraging more hijackings. Some pirates have been arrested in connection with the attacks, but that has failed to halt the hijackings. Last month the United States and France introduced a U.N. resolution that would allow countries to chase and arrest pirates off Somalia' s coast. Somalia has no navy and is unable to police its own shores.

Yemen: Authorities close to arresting dozens of al-Qaeda militants
Yemeni security authorities have identified 70 militants belonging to al-Qaeda or to Shia rebel factions loyal to insurgent leader Imam Abdul Malik al-Houthi, and will be arrested in the next few days, pan-Arab daily al-Hayat reported. About 30 of the wanted militants are thought to be very dangerous, as they are reportedly followers of Osama Bin Laden.

Yemeni security officials quoted by the paper said they are confident that in the next few days the wanted militants will be arrested, due to vital information provided by 11 al-Qaeda militants who were arrested in capital Sanaa earlier this week. According to al-Hayat , those arrested were directly involved in terror attacks in Sanaa during March and April and belonged to Jund al-Yemen, al-Qaeda's branch in the country.

In the past, the authorities in Yemen have accused the Iranian government of financing the rebel movement led by al-Houthi.
Among the arrested are six Saudi citizens, three Chadians and two Yemenis. Jund al-Yemen claimed responsibility for the double car-bomb attack near the Italian embassy in Sanaa on 30 April.

Also on Thursday, government troops arrested rebel leader Fadl al-Houthi along with Ahmad Daghsan, another al-Houthi field commander.

The Shia rebels together with the revival of al-Qaeda cells in Yemen represent the most important security threats in the country and have led to the deaths of hundreds of Yemeni soldiers. In the past, the authorities in Yemen have accused the Iranian government of financing the rebel movement led by al-Houthi.

Yemen arrests 11 Al-Qaeda suspects
Yemeni security forces have broken up an 11-member Al-Qaeda cell in the capital Sanaa, the defence ministry's online newspaper reported on Thursday.

"The Saudis are jihadists who originally wanted to go to Iraq but ended up coming to Yemen because of the strict measures taken by authorities in their country for monitoring the border with Iraq."
The suspects, who were arrested over the past few days, revealed during their interrogation "important information regarding terrorist attacks carried out by Al-Qaeda (in Yemen)," the September 26 website reported.

Al-Qaeda's wing in Yemen, which calls itself Jund Al-Yemen Brigades, has carried out a series of attacks in recent months targeting the US and Italian embassies and a residential complex which is home to US oil workers.

Vice-Prime Minister for defence and security affairs General Rashed al-Alimi was due to give a press conference to provide more information on the arrests, it said, without giving further details. "Six Saudi Arabians and three Chadians are among the people arrested," a source close to the inquiry said. "The Saudis are jihadists who originally wanted to go to Iraq but ended up coming to Yemen because of the strict measures taken by authorities in their country for monitoring the border with Iraq."

Charge sheet against Huji cadres Abu Zandal, Gharami
A Satkhira court yesterday framed charges against Zandal and Gharami, operatives of banned Islamist outfit Harkatul Jihad al Islami (Huji), for possession of 44 grenades.

The two accused -- Moin Uddin alias Abu Zandal and Nazrul Islam Gharami -- were brought from Dhaka and produced before the court yesterday amid tight security for hearing of the case.

Judge Ashish Ranajn Das of the District and Sessions Judge's Court passed the order and fixed June 4 and 5 for recording of statements from prosecution witnesses in the case, said court sources.

Zandal, a close aide to Huji chief Mufti Hannan who led the August 21, 2004 grenade attack on an Awami League (AL) rally in Dhaka, was arrested from Gazipur on February 14 this year.

Following the leads gathered from Zandal, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) the next morning arrested Gharami from Nalta bazar in Kaliganj upazila. The same day, upon receiving confessional statement from Gharami, the Rab recovered 44 grenades from a pond at Shimulia village in Debhata.

Rab sources said the grenades recovered from the Shimulia pond are identical to the ones used in the attack on the AL rally on August 21.

On February 15, Tariqul Islam, sub-inspector of Rab 6, filed the case with Debhata Police Station against Zandal and Gharami for possession of the grenades.

Inspector Lokman Hakim, the investigation officer of the case and also officer in charge of Debhata Police Station, submitted charge sheet before the Satkhira Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court against the two accused on March 17.

Australian Terror suspect denied visit to dying Mother
A man facing terrorism charges has been refused permission for further visits to the hospital bedside of his dying mother, the NSW Department of Corrective Services says.
Sounds fair. I doubt if his potential victims' relatives would have gotten a chance to visit them prior to him blowing them up.
Mohamed Ali Elomar is one of nine men facing terrorism related charges being held under tight security in NSW. A corrective services spokeswoman said the NSW Supreme Court granted Elomar, who is on remand, permission to visit his mother on Wednesday.
That was pretty nice of them. Us infidels are like that.
Elomar is being held at the Metropolitan Remand Centre at Silverwater, in Sydney's west. The court refused Elomar's application for a second visit to see his mother.
Usually we're not like that until we run out of patience.
"He applied to the Supreme Court to visit his mother and the court granted his release on compassionate grounds on Wednesday and the Department of Corrective Services Commissioner therefore directed to allow him out to see his mother and then he was returned to custody," the corrective services spokeswoman said. "He applied again today and was knocked back, I understand. His mother is dying."
Gosh. My heartstrings have been ever so-o-o-o-o-o tugged.
Elomar was accompanied by heavily armed officers during his visit to Bankstown Hospital, the Seven Network reported.
Mom,on her deathbed, musta been so proud!
Mohamed Ali Elomar, Bradley Umar Sariff Baladjam, Khaled Cheikho, Moustafa Cheikho, Abdul Rakib Hasan, Mohammed Omar Jamal, Mirsad Mulahalilovic, Khaled Sharrouf and Mazen Touma are accused of conspiring with each other, and others, to do acts in preparation for a terrorist act or acts.

Gujarat: Ban on visitors from Pakistan
The Gujarat government does not want visitors from Pakistan any more. Citing security concerns, the state government has written to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs that visas should not be granted to Pakistani nationals if they express the wish to visit Gujarat.

This move comes in the wake of a spurt in arrests of Pakistanis staying illegally in border districts. All the suspects had visas to visit Delhi. They had tampered with the papers to include Kutch and Banaskantha.

Sources say Gujarat is the first state to seek a complete ban on Pakistani visitors. In the last one month, nearly 30 Pakistanis have been caught staying illegally in border districts of Gujarat and adjoining Rajasthan. The letter sent by the home department has also cited the recovery of three SIM-cards and two mobile phones from a suspected Pakistani terrorist — Shahnawaz Bhatti — in Sabarmati central jail earlier this month.

Bhatti's call records prove that he was making regular calls to Lashkar-e-Taiba contacts in Pakistan.
Bhatti's call records prove that he was making regular calls to Lashkar-e-Taiba contacts in Pakistan. Intelligence Bureau, which intercepted the calls, alerted Gujarat police that LeT was planning a jail break to free Bhatti, who was caught in 2001 with RDX and automatic weapons, and four other Pakistanis lodged in the jail. After the raid in Sabarmati jail, the police scoured the Kutch and Banaskantha districts and caught five Pakistanis with tampered visas, said a senior police official. Just prior to this, the Rajasthan police caught 23 Pakistanis from Barmer.

Following these arrests, the intelligence wing of state police submitted a report to the Gujarat government seeking to block all Pakistanis from coming to Gujarat. "Given the threat perception, we can't let Pakistanis stay illegally," a senior home department official said.

Special Groups Money Man Captured
Hope he kept good account books, and that we have them.
BAGHDAD – Coalition forces captured a key suspected Special Groups financier May 28 in Mahmudiyah, about 15 km south of Baghdad. Intelligence sources led Coalition forces to the residence of the individual believed to be a key Special Groups financier. He is suspected to be the primary financier between Iranian intelligence elements and Special Groups criminals in Mahmudiyah and southern Baghdad and was reportedly distributing funds to weapons smugglers supplying criminals in those areas. In addition, the individual was believed to travel to Iran and Syria to procure funds on behalf of Special Groups senior leadership.

Coalition forces approached the targeted individual’s residence in Mahmudiyah Wednesday night where they detained him without incident. “Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces are targeting Special Groups financiers and the methods they use to facilitate terror against the Iraqi people,” said U.S. Army Capt. Charles Calio, MNF-I spokesman. “We are targeting every aspect of the terrorists’ networks.”

#1  Sounds like a good cockroach stomp by the police, though I am suspcious that this story is not the whole story (if 14 gunmen were killed, the IP didn't do it, or if the IP did it, then they weren't gunmen).

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel uses gunfire to repel Hamas border rally
GAZA (Rooters) - Israeli troops used gunfire and teargas on Friday to keep more than 3,000 Hamas supporters from approaching one of the Gaza Strip's main border crossings with Israel, wounding at least six Palestinians, witnesses said. At least two of the wounded were in a critical condition, Palestinian medical workers said.

Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said the protest at the Sufa border crossing was part of a stepped up campaign to break Israel's blockade of the coastal territory, which the Islamist group seized last June from rival forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. "Hamas will use all means to end the siege ... We will use stronger and more violent means in the future," Abu Zuhri said, though he offered not details, while rolling eyes and jumping up and down.

The Israeli army had posted signs before the protest warning Palestinians that they faced "Danger of Death" if they tried to approach the Sufa crossing, used to bring some humanitarian supplies into the Gaza Strip.

Hamas has mounted several similar protests in recent months, demanding an end to an Israeli-led economic blockade which has increased hardships for the territory's 1.5 million residents. Hamas blew open the border with Egypt earlier this year, putting Israel on heightened alert for similar actions. Israel says the blockade is meant to curb militants who fire cross-border rockets into the Jewish state.

The demonstrators on Friday burnt tires, waved green Hamas flags and chanted "Dismantle the siege".

An Israeli military official said troops shot into the crowd to "make the rioters back off". "The IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) will operate with all its strength to prevent the demonstrators from approaching the security fence or the crossing ... and from entering the state of Israel," the official said.

Separately, Palestinian medical workers said a 65-year-old woman died on Friday from wounds suffered a day earlier. The Palestinians said the woman was hit during an Israeli army raid near her home in the southern Gaza Strip. An army spokesman denied any military action in the area.

Hamas: We do not fear death. We *crave* death. We revel in our glorious martyrdom. Allah Akbar!

IDF: Bang!

Hamas: Ouch! Hey, that hurts. Stop it!

#2  I just don't understand Israel.

Gaza has a border with Egypt and a coast line.

Make the freakin' border solid. No way in or out from Israel to Gaza. If they need humanitarian aid buy a boat.

Bomb explodes in Zamboanga; 3 dead, 18 hurt
Three people were killed and 18 injured when a homemade bomb exploded Thursday in an attack blamed on Islamic militants in a southern Philippine city, police and military officials said.

The explosion occurred in front of a building housing the offices of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), a congressman and the Philippine military's mutual fund in Zamboanga City, 875 kilometres south of Manila. Police Senior Superintendent Lurimer Detran said the building was in front of Philippines' Edwin Andrews Air Force Base, where civilian commuters were massing outside its gate to take a C-130 flight. The explosion was triggered by a 'command-detonated' homemade bomb that appeared to have been hidden in one of the bags of the civilian commuters, Army Colonel Darwin Guerra said. 'This is an act of terrorism,' he said.

Police Director General Avelino Razon ordered police in the insurgency-wracked southern region of Mindanao to heighten alert following the attack, according to regional police chief Director Jaime Caringal. Caringal said checkpoints have been set up in entry and exit points in Zamboanga and nearby urban centres.

Caringal said investigators were looking into the possible involvement of the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf rebel group and the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in the attack. 'The attack could be a retaliation for a recent clash in nearby Basilan province, where the MILF and the Abu Sayyaf suffered casualties,' he said.

Sri Lanka
Tigers kill 13 in Lankan navy camp raid
Separatist Tamil fighters launched a pre-dawn attack early yesterday against a naval camp on an island off northern Sri Lanka, killing at least 13 sailors, a pro-rebel website said.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said its Sea Tiger wing also seized weapons, including a radar, from the camp on Chiraththivu islet, close to the Jaffna peninsula. "At least 13 Sri Lanka navy personnel were killed and many sailors wounded in the raid carried out by a special marine wing of the Sea Tigers," the Tamilnet.com reported, quoting the LTTE. "There were no LTTE casualties in the operation," the report said, adding that the rebels "safely returned to their base" after destroying the navy camp.

However, Sri Lanka's defence ministry said army and navy personnel successfully repulsed the rebels, killing at least 16 LTTE cadres and destroying three enemy boats. "Troops have also mounted heavy artillery attacks towards the fleeing terrorists as enemy fatalities were expected to soar," the ministry said.

Casualty figures given by both sides in the conflict vary wildly and cannot be verified independently.

Elsewhere, according to the military, six civilians were killed and 12 others seriously wounded when the LTTE fired 20 rounds of heavy artillery shells towards two densely populated areas of Jaffna peninsula. The military earlier said four civilians were killed and six injured in the pre-dawn "indiscriminate LTTE artillery attack."

In the northern town of Vavuniya, three policemen were injured when the LTTE triggered off a roadside mine targeting police vehicles, the ministry said. It said air force planes stepped up attacks against suspected rebel positions in the north, providing air cover for ground troops and bombing a rebel training facility.

Meanwhile, A Sri Lankan journalist working in the war-torn northern region and his friend have been hacked to death, a media rights group said Thursday.
