In the "just plain bizarre" category, some "dude," as our colleague Chris Cillizza, a.k.a, "the Fix," tells us, got on today's conference call with Hillary Clinton's chief campaign strategist Mark Penn, communications director Howard Wolfson and deputy communications director Phil Singer and asked whether Clinton could "talk sexy" in her ads so he could "pinch the squid."
The unidentified man then said he thought Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has "nice ears."
Needless to say, the conference call crasher was ignored LOL - sorry for the diversion, just too funny/weird to pass up

Ever wonder what it's like for women that wear hijab - or the head scarf? I certainly get some crazy questions sometimes. And after you wear the Muslim garb, wear a swastika armband for a day. You would want Nazi ornaments to be treated as well as those of the religion of peace.
"Do you take a shower with that on?" is pretty common.
And so is, "Do you wear that because you're bald?"
That one's my favorite.
I certainly don't mind the questions, and I am happy to answer them whenever I get them. But, now it's your turn. I challenge the women on this campus to walk a day in my shoes. I challenge women to wear hijab for a whole day on April 25, 2008 and then talk about the experience afterward.
Whether you think Muslim women are oppressed or whether you respect the hijab, you all have something to gain from the experience.
I have to admit, the idea wasn't really my own. Montclair State University's Muslim Students Association recently sponsored the same type of event. The idea was to get girls to wear hijab, show them how to wear it for a day and at the end of the day, come together and discuss their experiences.
Muslim women wear the hijab because it is a commandment of Allah, or God, in the Quran. And since Muslims believe the purpose of life is to worship the creator alone, they must follow all the commandments in the Quran, and who better to tell a person what's good or bad for them than the one who created them?
The hijab also protects women.
... from having the crap beaten out of her by the local hard boys ...
"I remember one girl who was enthralled by the entire experience and saw it more as something that strengthened the bond between women more so than for religion itself. I just thought that was a really interesting observation on her part," said MSU English student Hafsa Khan...

I think this should be an especially illuminating experience -- people will ask these women "What's the matter, can't think for your self?" "What's it like to be chattel?" "What are you doing out unescorted?" and my personal favorite "Where's your black eye -- don't you have a husband?"

I'd suggest - merely to "gain the experience" of normal American women - that Ms. Elmasraya wear normal American female college clothing for a day (outside in the real world, not just in her room). That would include short skirt, sandals, low-cut sleevless tank top (exposed midriff optional), and of course loose hair.
Then we can talk (if her male fellow religionists haven't beaten her to death).

My understanding is there is nothing in the koran about wearing a hijab. She's just another mind numbed koranimal. I'm really getting tired of this BS. Would Shirien ever consider meatless Fridays or donning a yarmulke? I didn't think so, so tell ya what missy? I've some advice that's a helluva lot better than what old Mo (piss be upon him) has to give: STFU already!

Even riskier: wear a "Glenn Dorsey Sucks" t-shirt in Baton Rouge.
Seriously, though, the arrogance of this chattle is beyond me. What happened to "when in Rome, do as the Romans?" Especially in Baton Rouge, Ms. Elmasraya should get an "eye-full" during Mardi-Gras in cajun country, not ask other females to don her yoke.

Counter protest that would be approved by all the young men... spend the day in string bikinis.
The Colorado Department of Transportation has exhausted a fund set up to cover overruns in its budget for snow removal this season.
It expects costs to reach a record $71 million by the time the season ends. CDOT originally budgeted $43 million for snow and ice control this winter, but it had already spent $53 million through mid-March. Still getting snow in "foot" (not inches) amounts up in the high country. Looks like Arapahoe Basin ski park will be open into June, easily.

I might just have to make the trip to A-basin sometime in May. It's been 9 long years since I've been to "the base" but with the year they are having out West, I imagine the spring skiing conditions will be phenomenal.
The Isakhel police caught an Afghan couple fleeing a refugee camp on Thursday night to marry by choice after reaching Afghanistan, on suspicions that they were terrorists.
The couple was travelling on a minibus towards a destination where they could lead a happy life according to their aspirations when the police held them at Dara Tang check post, some 70 kilometres away from here, on MianwaliLaki Marwat boundary between the provinces of Punjab and NWFP. The Kalabagh police are detaining the couple, without formally arresting them, possibly on two counts; first, the police are yet unable to ascertain what crime the couple had committed involving police cognisance, and second, what would be the fate of the boy and the girl if they are released.
In case they are handed back to their elders at the refugee camp, it is very much likely that their heads will be chopped off according to Afghan traditions and customs.
Feroze Shah and his 16-year-old cousin Bibi Ghaman developed an affair while residing at Kot-Chandna Refugee Camp but circumstances prevented them from exchanging vows publicly. Thus, they decided to flee the refugee camp and travel to Helmand town in Afghanistan to live a free yet happy life.
Pretty sad when moving to Afghanistan is what guarantees you a 'free yet happy' life ...
They boarded a coach from Kot-Chandna and when the vehicle they were travelling on reached Dara Tang check post, the Isakhel police personnel frisked the passengers and considering the duo potential terrorists held them and told them to abandon their journey and join preliminary interrogation. Later, they were handed over to Kalabagh police for further investigations.
During initial probe, it was revealed that they were not terrorists and in fact they were lovebirds.
The police are now in dilemma to decide the couples fate. Sources said that in first instance, the police intended to hand over the couple to their elders at the refugee camp. At that moment, Prof. Ziaullah, an activist of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, who was present at the police station in connection with some personal affairs, resisted the move on the plea that Afghan tribesmen would certainly kill the couple according to their social norms.
He also referred the last month unnoticed incident in which a couple was shot dead at a refugee camp for committing similar blunder.
Inspector Zulfiqar Ali Chheena, the Kalabagh station house officer (SHO), told Dawn that the couple would be handed over to their parents only after ensuring the safety of their life. However, the SHO did not agree to shift the girl to Mianwalis Darul Aman (shelter house). He also did not disclose under what law the police were detaining the couple, especially when they had neither committed any offence nor they were wanted in any case.
There's a modern thought, and it must be snuffed out ...
Kalabagh Circle DSP Fida Hussain told Dawn that any decision in this connection would be taken according to the law and guidelines issued by the police and administration high-ups. Sources said that Afghan elders too are pressing the police to hand over the couple to them and then they would decide their fate according their customs.

A court in Saudi Arabia has reportedly sentenced a Canadian teenager to spend one year in prison and receive 200 lashes for his involvement in a schoolyard brawl that left a man dead. Mahmoud Al-Ken, a reporter for a Montreal Arabic radio station, said the family of 17-year-old Sultan Kohail told him the teen had been sentenced on Saturday. In a prior ruling handed down March 3, Kohail's 23-year-old brother, Mohamed, was sentenced to death by beheading for the same incident.
The Kohails have maintained that they're both innocent. Their family says Mohamed Kohail didn't get a fair trial, with the entire case consisting of 10 brief court hearings totalling about 90 minutes. Also, the court refused to hear any defence witnesses, the family maintains. Earlier this week, Mohamed's lawyer was kicked out of court after he tabled documents for the 23-year-old's appeal. The judges, the same ones who sentenced Mohamed, also threatened to revoke the lawyer's licence.
Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day's department has urged Saudi authorities to overturn the death sentence. Sultan and Mohamed Kohail were detained in January 2007 after a brawl in which an 18-year-old Syrian student died of internal injuries. A third accused, a Jordanian national, has also been sentenced to death.
The fight apparently began when one of the men claimed Sultan had insulted a girl. "I didn't even talk to the girl," Sultan insisted Thursday in an interview with the Canadian Press. He said he was surrounded by a gang of almost a dozen men as he left school that day and that one of them tried to beat him on the head with a stick.
The Kohail family immigrated to Canada from Saudi Arabia in 2000 and had been living in the Montreal suburb of Dollard des Ormeaux before they moved back to their homeland temporarily in 2006.

This whole story sounds like concocted crap.
Under Saudi law, as far as I understand it, diyya applies.
If so the blood money to be paid is 100,000 riyals (US$26,667)
The family is probably trying to screw the Canadian Government AKA Canadian taxpayer, into paying the money for them.

These fools didn't learn from another Canuck who had the misfortune to run afoul of the Muzzies. Remember the Iranian/Canadian female reporter who got raped, beaten and murdered in Iran in 2004? In response to the torture and murder of one of its citizens, Canada sent a strong diplomatic note. That scared the Mullahs so badly that IIRC, they didn't even bother responding to it. Formally, that is, although the Mullahs probably grabbed their packages and said something in Farsi like, "I got yuh response RIGHT HERE, INFIDELS!"
I was in Canada at the time and heard Canadians openly admitting that Canada had no choice but to take it because their military weakness meant they had no way to do anything about it. Same thing applies here. The Kohail boys are screwed, quite probably literally so but most assuredly figuratively. The most helpful thing their parents can do for them now is send them a few industrial-size jars of Vaseline.
All the Canucks who come on the 'Burg telling us all about how right-wing Americans are all stupid warmongers should pay attention to the difference in the way Americans and Canucks are treated in Muzzie countries. Americans they may hate, but at least our potential for retaliation is known and feared.
Canucks are also hated as infidels but they're despised as well. Their troops are fighting hard in the small conflict going on in Afghanistan and doing a good job, but it's no secret that A-stan has them stretched to, and probably almost past, their limit. They have nothing with which to put leverage on the Saudis, and both sides know it. Therefore, these Canucks are toast.
An additional sessions judge (ASJ) here on Friday handed down death sentence to a man for killing his mother-in-law over a domestic issue about two and a half years ago. ASJ Rana Masood Akhtar sentenced Muhammad Ikram to death, who killed Kalsoom Bibi in the Waris Khan Police area on November 2, 2005. The convict will have to pay Rs100,000 as fine and in case of non-payment, he will undergo one year imprisonment.
"Yez killed yer mother-in-law, Moe. That's the death sentence in these here parts!"
"Everything around here's the death sentence!"
"No, it ain't! Some things are the death sentence and a Rs100,000 fine! This is one of 'em!"
"You're gonna hang me! Why should I pay a Rs100,000 fine?"
"'Cause if you don't, it's a year in jug!"
"Before or after you hang me?"

Nipah virus is a new and deadly brain and lung disease that emerged from Singapore and Malaysia ten years ago. It is now spreading into rural India and Bangladesh killing up to three-quarters of the people who become infected in some outbreaks, scientists heard April 3, 2008 at the Society for General Microbiology's 162nd meeting.
"People are catching this disease by drinking date palm juice or probably by eating fruit contaminated by the virus, or through contact with infected animals. We have seen nine outbreaks in Bangladesh since 2001, which killed 40-100% of the people who were infected", says Dr Jahangir Hossain, a scientist working in the Dhaka Hospital at the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research in Bangladesh (ICDDR,B).
Fruit bats are a natural reservoir of Nipah virus, and the first outbreaks in Singapore and Malaysia started when pigs on farms ate fruit which had been bitten by infected bats and dropped near their pens. The pigs developed coughs and breathing difficulties, and an epidemic spread across the Asian peninsula due to the pig trade. Pig farmers and abattoir workers became infected from sick pigs.
"Three outbreaks in Bangladesh were caused when people ate fresh date palm sap, a local sweet delicacy, which had been contaminated by bats." says Dr Jahangir Hossain. "Because both people and animals in Bangladesh often eat fresh date palm sap and fruits which have been bitten by bats, contaminated food and domestic animals form an important transmission pathway for Nipah virus to infect people."
The researchers have been trying to discover the way Nipah virus outbreaks start and to identify the factors which could help prevent virus transmission in the future. The large outbreak in pigs in Malaysia and Singapore caused the biggest outbreak in humans so far. In one outbreak in Bangladesh, people became infected after contact with sick cows, and close contact with pig herds was associated with virus transmission in another outbreak.
"We are working with local date palm sap collectors to learn about traditional practices that prevent bats from getting at and contaminating the sap", says Dr Jahangir Hossain. "If we can identify the factors that allow the virus to be passed from bats to humans so frequently, we might be able to help intervene and interfere with the transmission pathways. Current efforts should focus on restricting the consumption of fruit bitten by bats, restricting human contact with sick animals, and protecting date palm sap from contamination by bat secretions."

I notice how no real absolute numbers are given. So in order for "between 40 and 100%" to die, I would say that a reasonable number would be 5 cases of the disease and somewhere between 2 and 5 die.
Seriously, because they don't mention any actual numbers of cases, it is my experience that number of cases is so low that it would not be a sensational news story if it was included. I have a feeling we are likely talking less than 100 people, in a world of billions.

"From September 1998 - April 1999, there was a large outbreak of encephalitis in Malaysia. During the investigation of this outbreak, Nipah virus, a previously unrecognized virus, was identified as the causal agent. A total of 265 people were infected, of whom 105 died. Ninety-three percent of cases had occupational exposure to pigs."

In Asia people eat fruit bats. I was once in Borneo with a couple of locals who were trying to shoot down fruit bats with a shotgun. They told me it used to be easier, but the bats had learned to fly higher out of range.

Clooney, 46, directed and starred in "Leatherheads," a $58 million farce set in the early days of American professional football. He claims he also rewrote much of Duncan Brantley and Rick Reilly's script, which had been languishing for 17 years, introducing its screwball tone. But his request for credit was denied by the Writers Guild of America and he resigned from the union as a voting member in protest.
Critics have savaged the film, particularly the script. According to Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com), a Web site that aggregates reviews, only 36 percent of top critics liked the film.
Despite his fame and fortune, Clooney is a risky box office bet. He was last in theaters with "Michael Clayton," which earned $10.4 million during its first weekend of wide release in October. The acclaimed legal thriller finished with a disappointing $49 million but did pick up seven Oscar nominations.

I've actually liked some of Clooney's films. Three Kings was pretty good, for example.
But as an advocate of the loonie left and a proponent for gun control, Clooney should keep his big, freaking, uneducated mouth shut.
What gives people who act in Hollywood, make millions of dollars, and don't even have a college degree think they're God's gift to to the masses?
George, I love yer' acting. Now, shut up and act, and stop trying to be anything you are not (ie, you're an actor, nothing more, nothing less, and that doesn't make you an intellectual or give you the right to lecture me or anyone else in America, ya' halfwit).

A multi-volume chronology and reference guide set detailing three years of the Mexican Drug War between 2010 and 2012.
Rantburg.com and borderlandbeat.com correspondent and author Chris Covert presents his first non-fiction work detailing
the drug and gang related violence in Mexico.
Chris gives us Mexican press dispatches of drug and gang war violence
over three years, presented in a multi volume set intended to chronicle the death, violence and mayhem which has
dominated Mexico for six years.
Rantburg was assembled from recycled algorithms in the United States of America. No
