Suicide blast hits NATO soldiers in E Afghanistan
KABUL - A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-packed truck into a government compound in eastern Afghanistan Monday, wounding at least four NATO soldiers and two Afghan police, officials said. The Taleban claimed responsibility for the blast, the fourth in a week in the Yaqoobi district of Khost near Pakistan.

Four NATO troops were evacuated after the attack but the extent of their injuries was not clear, a US military spokesman told AFP. However, none were believed to have been killed, he said. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldiers had been providing security for the compound, a base for the district government, police and army, First Class Sergeant Dean Welch said.

Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan Targeted in Somalia Airstrike
U.S. forces found, targeted and killed in a Somali desert city the senior al Qaeda operative who masterminded the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa and had since spent a decade in hiding, The Washington Times has learned.

Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, who is one of the FBI's most-wanted terrorists, was the target of a U.S. missile strike on a residence in Dobley, a small town in southern Somalia near the Kenyan border, according to a U.S. military official who spoke to The Times on the condition of anonymity because of the nature of the operation. "Al Qaeda has used this region to spill over into other parts of eastern Africa," said a U.S. counterterrorism official, also on the condition of anonymity. "Somalia at a minimum is a place of refuge but for some of al Qaeda it is a place to plot and plan future attacks."

The truck bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, which came just nine minutes apart, killed 12 American diplomats and more than 200 Africans, and also injured 5,000 people.

National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe, who did not reveal details regarding the operation or name its target, told reporters that "the action was to go after al Qaeda and al Qaeda-affiliated terrorists," alluding that more than one person may have been killed in the attack. "They are plotting and planning all over the world to destabilize the world, to inflict terror, and where we find them, we are going to go after them," he said.

The 34-year-old Nabhan and other al Qaeda members are thought to have been killed in the attack, according to sources who spoke to The Times. Several U.S. military officials told The Times that the attack was carried out by Tomahawk cruise missiles, although most were unsure of whether the missile was fired from a submarine or a surface ship.

#1  If we have jets and or AC-130's flying over, why would we use a tomahawk missle. They can't be as adaptable, should the target move?

#2  Yeah, but it is nice that we can strike via multiple modalities. Also, no country has to take the heat of being the place that an attacking plane took off from.

#3  THIS is terrorism. Three women, three children, and 20 others killed in an effort to strike a supposed Al Qaeda militant NOT responsible for any attacks on the U.S., but in fact two *attempted* bombings on Israeli interests. The reference to the truck bombings in this article are misleading, to say the least.

#4  How much are the shiehks paying you, Matthew Troll?
The US embassies were not "an Israeli interest."

As for Nabhan's alleged innocence and the dead innocents in Dobley, we have only your word and that of some other AQ collaborators for that.

The 200+ innocent Africans killed in the embassy bombings, on the other hand, were verified by media, and diplomatic and NGO personnel from all over the world.

Your post is, in short, a massively obvious example of the Big Lie. Goebbels must be smiling up from hell at you.

#11  Tactical Tomahawk” equips the TLAM with a TV-camera for battlefield observation and loitering that allows warfighting commanders to assess damage to the target and to redirect the missile to an alternative targets. Additionally the Tactical Tomahawk is able to be reprogrammed in-flight to attack one of 16 predesignated targets with GPS coordinates stored in its memory or to any other GPS coordinates. Also, the missile can send data about its status back to the commander. It entered service with the Navy in late 2004.

sure be nice to know the particulars and all the players, BUT NOT at the expense of future OPs.

In the last few months, al-Qaeda has been unmercifuully slaughtered in Iraq [GOD IS GREAT]
The U.S. operation targeting Nabhan comes only a month after Abu Laith al-Libi, a known top-tier commander of al Qaeda's combat operations was killed by a missile strike on his compound in the Pakistani region of North Waziristan. A video made by al-Libi supporters, which surfaced on the Internet recently and thought to be authentic, shows al-Libi's grandmother crying over his body

#12  If you can't "live and let live", and make nasty to the West, we will hunt you down and kill you - and your friends and protectors. That should be the message everyone who hears about this comes away with. The biggest problem of American foreign policy is trying to be "liked". Screw being liked. I want the people to either respect us, or fear us, depending upon which way they behave toward us. Being "liked" is for your mother. Teddy Roosevelt needs to ride again, with his Big Stick and his Great White Fleet. Nothing would please me more than to see all the idiots working for the State Department holy-stoning the decks of a half-dozen nuke-powered battlewagons.

US strikes Somali town, targets Al Qaeda
We don't know who got toasted so the accordion lady is out to keep the crowd warmed up ...
The United States bombed a town in southern Somalia on Monday in a strike on suspected terrorists, United States defense officials told news agencies. Six people are reported dead.

Three missiles struck a building in Dobley, a town four miles from the border with Kenya, the Associated Press reported. Remnants of Somalia's Union of Islamic Courts, an organization that ruled much of the southern part of the country until late 2006, reportedly took the town last week. The British Broadcasting Corporation is reporting that the missile strike killed six and wounded 20.

Pentagon spokesperson Bryan Whitman told journalists that the attack targeted a "known al-Qaida terrorist."
Memo to Wazoo: this is what happens when you don't have any sort of government around. It gives us a free hand to do what we feel we have to do, and there's no one of consequence to complain to. We can put a missile or a bomb just about anywhere these days, and for just about any reason ...
Earlier, in the day, a U.S. military official told the AP in Washington, "It was a deliberate, precise strike against a known terrorist and his associates." Reuters reported that a U.S. defense official said that the strike targeted a building that is known to be frequently used by terrorists.

A witness told the AP that three planes were involved in the attack. "We woke up with a loud and big bang and when we came out we found our neighbor's house completely obliterated as if no house existed here," Fatuma Abdullahi said.

Reuters spoke with a man in Kismayu, 140 miles north of Dobley, who said the building destroyed in the attack belonged to him. He claimed his daughter had been wounded in the attack. "We do not know whether the missiles were fired by the American AC-130 plane which is still flying over the city. All we know they dropped from the sky," Mohamed Nurie Salad said. He was planning on returning to Dobley to assess the damage.
AC-130, huh? They'll leave a mark.

#1  Heard one story yesterday that said it was two cruise missiles launched from a sub. Likely the planes were spotting targets for them.

#2  Here it is: NAIROBI, Kenya - A U.S. missile strike early yesterday against terrorism suspects in a remote village of southern Somalia killed at least six people and wounded 10 others, witnesses and local leaders said. The Tomahawk cruise missile was launched from a U.S. submarine off the coast of the African nation, U.S. officials said, declining to identify the target or provide other details.

It is the fourth U.S. military strike in Somalia since Ethiopian troops entered the country in December 2006 to help defeat Islamist militants who had seized Mogadishu and to restore power to a United Nations-recognized transitional government.

Venezuelan man pleads guilty in Argentina cash suitcase scheme
A Venezuelan man pleaded guilty to conspiring to act as an illegal foreign agent in a scheme to cover up smuggling $800,000 in cash supposedly destined for the campaign of Argentina's president, US prosecutors said Monday.

Carlos Kauffmann, 35, a wealthy Venezuelan businessman who has ties to his country's state oil company, entered his guilty plea Friday. Prosecutors said they would seek to drop another related charge after his sentencing May 12, when he faces up to five years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine.

Prosecutors said they could recommend a sentence lower than the maximum if his cooperation helped in the case against three other men still facing charges. Prosecutors said they will also recommend that Kauffmann not be deported to Venezuela, due to "physical safety concerns."

Defense attorneys for Kauffmann did not return phone calls and e-mails. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Mulvihill declined to comment on the plea or discuss possible negotiations with other defendants.

Authorities Believe ELF Members Committed Arson on 'Street of Dreams'
Federal authorities strongly suspect that the Earth Liberation Front is responsible for a series of fires that have destroyed four multi-million dollar show homes in a suburb north of Seattle, sources told ABC News. Officials said the fires are being investigated as acts of domestic terror, but they cautioned that it's too early in the investigation to make any solid determinations. The blazes began before dawn Monday and were still smoldering by late morning. The homes were unoccupied and no injuries have been reported, officials said.

The fires are suspicious because they began at multiple locations in several houses, Snohomish County district seven Fire Chief Rick Eastman told the Associated Press.

The homes were unoccupied and for sale
Each of the five homes was for sale. We thank God that they were unoccupied and no one was injured in these fires. According to an email we received from the listing and selling agents, one home just recently received an offer that had been accepted by the builder, and another home was to receive an offer this week. List prices for each of the homes were in the approximate price range of $1.6 to $1.9 million.

Please pray for the builders
These are challenging times. We hope and pray that the local and federal authorities will be able to apprehend and bring justice to the perpetrator(s).

#7  The story I heard on the local news is that they found a sheet or something with writing on it stating that the fires were started because the houses weren't 'Green' enough and signed 'ELF'. Something about 'Green House? No - Black!" (I'm sure I didn't get that right).
Posted by: CrazyFool || 03/04/2008 10:24 Comments || Top||

#8  There was a sheet found, but of (I think) greater interest, is that there is an arson trial going on involving an ELF member and the fires were set. This is interesting because at a previous ELF arson trial ( in 2001, I think) there was also another series of arson fires; an attempt to get a mis-trial declared. In the current trial, the judge queried the jury about whether the fire would affect their decision to render a fair verdict. The defense att'y had requested a mis-trial, this was the judge's response. I look for an appeal on these grounds, should a guilty verdict come back.

NY court: Saudi billionaire can pursue British claims in the US
The author of a book about financing terrorism cannot prevent a Saudi billionaire from trying to enforce a London libel verdict in the United States, a US federal appeals court said Monday.

The Saudi businessman, Khalid Salim A. Bin Mahfouz, has made claims against authors and journalists more than two dozen times over writings on terrorism and those who fund it, including Manhattan author Rachel Ehrenfeld's 2003 book, "Funding Evil: How Terrorism is Financed - and How to Stop It."

Ehrenfeld wrote that Bin Mahfouz and his family provided financial support to al-Qaida and other "Islamist terror groups."

The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday rejected Ehrenfeld's lawsuit to stop the Bin Mahfouz from trying to collect on a default judgment obtained against Ehrenfeld in London.

#1  So a U.S. court is upholding/enforcing a Brit libel verdict in the U.S. that the Saudi terrorist financier could never have gotten in the U.S! Something is very, very wrong here. Any RB legal beagles out there who can 'splain this one?

#3  If Ehrenfeld was found guilty of a crime in Britain, even of something not a crime in the US, we would extradite, right? When Libyans blew up the plane over Lockerbie the US froze their national assets even though that act wasn't an obvious crime in Libya. Is a civil judgement that different? Ehrenfeld has been found liable by British courts, so does being in the US or having assets in the US shield them from that liability, regardless of the case behind the liability? I don't think the US retries cases decided by courts of allies so I would not bet against the US 2nd Court's decision.

#4  This may be a two-edged sword. While the judge is correct that US England reciprocity agreements have to be permitted to be pursued for enforcement, this might allow the case to be re-opened to some degree.

Since it is a civil case, the author can claim that to award the judgment would be "unconscionable", so terribly unjust that it could be reduced to a nominal sum, like $1, or set aside altogether.

We shall see.

It's time to tell the Brits that they can do anything they want in their country, but any such attempt to force us to obey those decisions will get us back into the same mood we expressed in 1776 and 1812.

#16  Haven't researched this . . . so take it with a grain of salt, or more. My guess is that there are uniform enforcement of judgment provisions that cause US judgments to be recognized in England, and vice versa. So, if the judgment in England is valid under English law, it will be recognized and enforced here in the US.

Best guess is that Ehrenfeld will have to argue against the validity of the English judgment [but it looks like he lost that fight in US District Court and that order was upheld on appeal -- i.e., they would not permit a collateral attack on the judgment]; or, he better hightail it to England and move to reopen the English case under some sort of "excusable neglect" "substantial fairness" theory.

#17  He wouldn't be able to challenge the merits of the judgment here in the US Courts. That horse left the barn in England.

Under the uniform provisions I expect exist, the reverse would be true if a valid US judgment had entered by default in a US Court, and was sought to be enforced in England.

#18  USN - suck it. Boeing pushed a shitty airframe they aren't even going to make anymore, and didn't meet the specs the UASF put out. Typical Boeing arrogance; "we don't care what you want, this is what we build". The idiots went with the 767, which didn't have the range the AF wanted, and Boeing countered with "It can operate closer to the action" from more local bases.

DUH! Tankers job is to stay the hell OUT of those things, operate form the US, drop cargo, gas up planes, and go back home. Boeing kinda said "Screw you we'll tell you how to run tankers". So no wonder the USAF tossed em out.

Had they even a single working brain cell the KC-777 would have been a winner - except for the fact that Boeing's production lines for the 777 are having issues an are falling behind.

Boeing blows and deserved to lose. Boeing should never have let all those MD execs take such a primary role in ruining running the company. Boeing is supposedly a "systems integration" company - and cannot manage the biggest integration job handed them in a while. The same Boeing who was responsible for parts of that failed billion dollar satellite. The same Boeing who couldn't even get a 28 mi segment of "virtual fence" organized for $60 million in contract.

Right now Boeing couldn't integrate a stack of friggen Legos. So they deserved to lose this contract.

So, NG cleaned their damned clock. Grabbed an Airbus design (the only non-Boeing thing left that size) that met the specs, and converted into a tanker that operates exactly how the USAF wanted it to. And FYI, 60% of the aircraft (including the GE engines and all the flight electronics, as well as the boom and tanks and lots of other important stuff) is 100% made here in the US, and 100% of the assembly, spares and maint are here in the US. And money-wise, close to 80% of the money is stateside, which will grow even further when the main contracts come on line.

As for it being Euro? NG is running it. US Company. Maybe you heard of them - they make Aircraft Carriers and other Navy ships, as well as other defense items.

And we have a long history of using parts form other countries when its suitable.

Personally speaking I never had an issue with the M256 Cannon - that is to say the 120mm Rheinmetall smoothbore on the M1A1-2, nor did I ahve an issue with the British derive Chobham armor, nor the Isreali designed reactive armor plates, etc. Those damned foreigner's products got me home safe and killed the bad guys.

And if you think NG is "a whore", then why not piss and moan about the CVN's or Predators they build - or the USS New York, whose workers came back in after Katrina and lived in company provided trailers, pulling 14 hour days - VOLUNTARILY - to keep that ship on schedule.

You stepped over the line.

Back on topic;

I can bet this goes to the supreme court, it gets tossed. No way someone else's libel laws can be enforced here - first amendment blankets a lot of this.

India-Pakistan
8 killed in clash between rival groups near Bara
At least eight people were killed and about a dozen injured on Monday during a clash between members of militant organisation Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) and residents of the village of Bara Shaikhan on the outskirts of Peshawar.

According to AP, the trouble began when dozens of LI activists, who are led by Mangal Bagh and support Mufti Munir Shakir, tried to demolish the shrine of an Islamic saint in Shaikhan village. Local police officer Zardad Khan said the LI men claimed it was un-Islamic to worship at the shrine. He said villagers who revere the tomb resisted, sparking a shootout that led to the death of at least eight people.

The firing stopped when contingents of police and Levies were deployed to the region. Later, area residents staged a protest demonstration by placing the dead in the middle of the Ring Road. The locals’ initial attempts to march towards Peshawar city were blocked by police, angering the protesters. They chanted slogans against the government and Mangal Bagh and asked for action against the attackers. Eventually, the police relented and the protesters were allowed to march towards Peshawar along with the dead.

LI chief Mangal Bagh told journalists in Shaikhan that his men had attacked the region after the political administration failed to take action against drug smugglers of the area. He rejected the reports that LI activists had attempted to raze a shrine to the ground. Police officials at Sarband and Badh Bher police stations were unable to confirm the death toll.

Locals told Daily Times that Shaikhan is home to supporters of Pir Saifur Rehman, who was expelled from Bara last year under immense pressure from the LI. Clashes between his followers and those of Mufti Munir Shakir had killed dozens of people in recent years, AP reported.

Six commanders, key militant among 11 held in Swat
Security forces on Monday arrested a key militant, Mirajuddin, at the Fiza Ghat checkpost outside Mingora city in Swat.

They also arrested 10 suspected militants including six key commanders of rebel cleric Mullah Fazlullah, in Bamakhela area of Matta tehsil. Mirajuddin was allegedly responsible for preparing both cars and suicide bombers for use in suicide attacks, an official source told Daily Times. The source said he was also wanted by security forces in connection with the beheading of six security officials in Charbagh area last year. Mirajuddin owned a workshop from where security forces had last month seized a car being prepared for a suicide attack, alongwith explosives, the official said.
He'll be let off. Not enough proof, even if it comes to trial. Remember, you need six adult Muslim men who're willing to swear they saw the whole thing. And give hostages.
In the second incident, which was confirmed by an ISPR statement, sources told Daily Times the 10 suspects had been moved to an undisclosed location for interrogations. The detainees also included notorious commander Khan Khitab’s son. Khitab had declared himself as Matta governor before last year’s military operation in the valley.
I was gonna declare myself governor of Pennsylvania last year, but then somebody pointed out that you only do that sort of thing in a society that's on its way into the dark ages. So I put my plans on hold, reread Gregory of Tours, and next week I'm declaring myself mayor of Cleveland.

Five 'militants' killed in Mohmand Agency
Security forces fired rockets at a car carrying five suspected militants at the Nahaqqi checkpost in Mohmand Agency on, killing all of them.

A Khasadar force personnel told Daily Times that the security forces and the militants came face to face at the checkpost, 15 kilometres to the northwest of the agency headquarters Ghalanai, when the latter were going to Gandab from Qandharo.

The security forces intercepted the car and tried to search it but the militants refused. The political administration intervened and offered to solve the problem through a jirga but to no avail, following which the security forces fired rockets at the car. An eyewitness said the car was burnt to ashes. The Peshawar-Bajaur Road remained closed meanwhile. The security forces have cordoned off the area.

Police on Monday arrested around 15 suspected terrorists from various areas of the city. Special police teams led by Yasin Farooq, senior superintendent of police (Operations), searched a total of 866 houses in Shah Khalid Colony, Ghareebabad, Rehmatabad and Shah Faisal Colony.

The teams made 15 arrests in view of intelligence reports. A police official said the search operation would continue until intelligence agencies gave clearance, adding that City Police Officer Saud Aziz had directed policemen not to breach the people’s privacy during the search.

Iraq
Police: At least 24 people killed, dozens injured in two Baghdad bombings
At least 24 people were reportedly killed and dozens were wounded Monday when two suicide car bombs exploded in different parts of Baghdad, police said. The US military reported a far lower figure for the deadlier of the two attacks.

Neither of the attacks took place in the areas of the sprawling city where Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was visiting.

Also Monday, the US military reported finding a grave with 14 bodies, believed to be members of the Iraqi security forces executed by al-Qaida in Iraq.

In Baghdad's deadliest attack, a suicide car bomber reportedly killed at least 22 people and wounded 43 in central Baghdad's Bab al-Mudham neighborhood on the eastern bank of the Tigris, according to police and hospital officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press. Associated Press Television News footage showed a 2-meter crater blown into the street by the explosion, which destroyed numerous cars and trucks and littered the area with shrapnel and debris.

Some Israeli forces enter south Gaza
KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip - About 25 Israeli armored vehicles rumbled into southern Gaza and clashed with militants after nightfall Tuesday. A 1-month-old baby was killed in the crossfire, a medical official said.

The Israeli tanks fired shells and attack helicopters fired missiles during the clashes, Palestinian witnesses said. The baby girl was killed by a ricocheting bullet, Palestinian Health Ministry official Moaiya Hassanain said. Eight militants and three civilians were wounded, none of then seriously, he said.

Israeli defense officials said it was a "pinpoint" operation aimed at Gaza militants. It came just a day after Israel ended a destructive and bloody ground operation in northern Gaza against Palestinian rocket squads.

The armored column entered Gaza through the Kissufim crossing, which was the main crossing point for Israeli settlers in Gaza before Israel's 2005 pullout, witnesses said. The soldiers arrested two Islamic Jihad militants and were pulling out two hours after the incursion, witnesses said. The Israeli military confirmed that the operation was over.

"This is a process that always has two steps forward and one step back," Bush said after meeting at the White House with Jordan's King Abdullah II. "We just need to make sure that it's just one step back."

This is crap. The Jews were not armed by the US and British. They had to buy their arms on the black market or from the Soviet Block. The British were actually supporting and arming Jordan's Army, which occupied the West Bank in 1948. More to the point, the war of 1948 was started by the Arabs, who refused to accept the UN Partition Resolution which would have created a Palestinian Arab State alongside Israel.

#20  A people who deliberately target innocent civilians as a mater of state policy does not deserve sympathy or recognition.

A people who have never lived up to any of its agreements for any peace process (see 'roadkillmap') but instead break it by deliberately targeting and blowing up busses filled with innocent civilians are simply not to be trusted.

A people who have been refugees for over 60 years without doing anything to get out of their 'refugee' status (except murder innocent Jews) no longer deserves sympathy.

A people who would elect a terrorist group (Hamas) as their government, of their own free will, does not deserve sympathy.

A people who would send their own children to murder innocent civilians do not deserve sympathy.

A people who react with glee with a pregnant mother and her 4 under 10 year old children are stopped on the highway and murdered in cold blood (simply because they are jewish) do not deserve sympathy.

A people who would use childhood characters much like Micky Mouse and Bugs Bunny to brainwash their children into intense hatred of a ethnic group - and to seek to murder that same group - do not deserve 'sympathy'.

I used to have 'sympathy' for the Palistinians. And if they would ever stop their terrorist methods and actually seek peace maybe something would come of it.

And by the way the 'moderate muslims' are not moderate because they are devout muslims but because they are not devout. That is why the terrorist can use the Koran as justification for their acts.

And Muslims do not seek 'equality' for non-muslims. Dhimmitude is not 'equality'.

Look at the laws of Saudi Arabia and Iran and how they treat non-muslims religions. Ask the Christians of Egypt.

They didn't grab it, they conquered it. In a war. Granted, it wasn't much of a war but you can't pick your opponents. But I suppose if you could, you'd pick Arabs. I would think they wouldn't want to give it back only to have to do it all over again. We've already seen what they get when they give back a place like say...Gaza?

#28  Jesus said" because they refuse to love the truth"

Jaffer is conversing, Jesus is knocking on his door.

Jaffer, what does your heart tell you about the brutality of islam. From the begining to end it is not pretty.

What kind of God would sanction this butality.

Think!

#29  Jaffer, you and the Arab world have a stunning case of cognitive dissonance. Egypt started the war and Jordan and Syria jumped in. Israel WON in six days. WON. As in YOU LOST. That was almost 41 years ago. GET OVER IT! YOU LOST. You have no valid claim. Anything Israel gives up is a gift to you, not a right.

#30  Jaffer,
When I became a Born Again Christian I looked back on my life to see how come it took so long. I discovered that all through my life Jesus had been knocking on my door.Track you life from the begining you will see the same. There is a reason you came here.

#33  Troll land. Tell you what Jaffer if you condemn your pedophile for profit, admit he was a child molester, mass murderer, I'll admit Muslims follow a terrorist hand book called the porKoran.

Trouble is boy these men know more about your own history than you ever will.

#34  How about we give back the Middle East to their original people who Islam conquered it from - you know the Christians, Jews, and others....

As for Turkey and UAE - they prove my point since they are less religious in their government then SA or Iran.

I feel sorry for the Muslims who are born into it and are not allowed (under pain of death) to convert to any other religion or even hear about it (again - under pain of death for anyone who would preach anything else) or any criticism of Islam or Mo. For example the 'MoToons' or Danish Cartoons and the upcoming short film. One wonders why Islam and its clerics are so terrified of a bunch of cartoons. And no, they are not 'offended' - they are terrified.

"As for me, I pity even his slaves..." - one of my favorite lines from from Lord of the Rings

#35  The paleo's chose to leave the human race. Therefore I have no sympathy, mercy, or compassion for them. If they all die, I don't care.

Maybe, when about 10 of them are left, they will decide to rejoin the human race and actually use the help that the US, Europe and even Israel has offered them to become a real nation. But some how, I don't think so.

I think after the cult of Allan is destroyed, future generations are going to bitch-slap us hard in the history books for failing to make the hard choices. Sad thing is, we deserve it.

#36  Jaffer - Cut it with this HOMELAND crap!
Vaterland! Motherland!...

In the US, these days, we are all pretty much mixed...
What's a homeland?
I might have ancestors from Norway and Germany...
The wife China..
The kids all three..
The neighbors - Mexico, .... and and ..
Homelands have no traction in the USA...
Its a totalitarian rallying point...
You get your hitlers with Deutchland Deutchland uber alles.
Your Soviets with the Motherland...
and your Paleos - tribes that wandered all over now yelling homeland..
Totalitarians all!

Israeli kills Palestinian in W. Bank
An Israeli settler shot and killed a 17-year-old Palestinian on Monday near the West Bank city of Ramallah. The settler told police that he opened fire on a group of dozens of masked Palestinian youths who threw rocks at him, fearing that he would be lynched, police reported.

An initial army investigation into the shooting indicated that the settler's actions were warranted. The Israeli resident of the West Bank settlement of Neria told police that he was walking from his house to the seminary he studies in when he was suddenly attacked by a group of 40-50 masked Palestinians throwing rocks and stones, police said. The settler, who felt he was in a "life-threatening situation," told police that he first opened fire with his personal weapon in the air, and only then shot toward the Palestinians' legs, Israel police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

IAF air strike in northern Gaza kills 1 Fatah operative, hurts 3 others

#3  Update IDF kills Gaza Islamic Jihad commander

Sri Lanka
25 killed in Sri Lanka artillery duels
Artillery exchanges left at least 25 Tamil rebels and two Sri Lankan soldiers dead, the defence ministry said Monday after the president vowed to destroy the separatist guerrillas.

Ten soldiers were also wounded in the heavy fighting in the north of the island on Sunday, the ministry said. President Mahinda Rajapakse told a public rally in central Sri Lanka the same day that the government had no plans to halt the military operations against the Tigers. His office said he reiterated that until “every inch of land is captured and the last terrorist is destroyed” his government will not call off “liberation operations against the LTTE.”

Pull-out: There was no immediate comment from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). However, a pro-rebel website reported that the Sri Lankan military had pulled back after suffering heavy casualties following six hours of artillery fire in Mannar. The rebels later seized military hardware after troops withdrew, the website quoted LTTE local commanders. Last month, Rajapakse told the country on the 60th anniversary of independence from Britain that “terrorism is receiving an unprecedented defeat” after the government pulled out of a truce with the rebels in January.

Since the beginning of the year, at least 1,779 rebels and 99 government soldiers have been killed in fighting, according to the defence ministry. Aid workers say over 170 civilians have also perished during the same period. Sri Lanka plans to spend a record 1.57 billion dollars for defence in calendar 2008, up 20 percent from last year, according to figures presented to the national parliament. Rising defence spending and concerns over the island’s human rights record has seen several countries withhold bilateral aid to the island.

Tech update...
I've put the server back the way it was, with the spare on standby (207.114.86.29). I have plans for it. I've spent a lot of time in the past three or four days rewriting a lot of code, and I've found lots of places where I should be writing still more, since my programming style's changed a lot since I first started writing this site.

The attack looks like it's over -- we've got a moderate activity level, much more in keeping with what we've had in the past. If things start up again, I'll put the spare back in for redirect and move Apache behind the hedge.

Long term, I'd like to upgrade to a more capable machine. We've got 2GB of memory that I'd like to see at 4GB at least, and we've got a single Pentium processor that I'd like to see at least dual core and maybe a couple of them side by side. That's assuming the hardware fund ever gets back to the point where it'll buy that. Maybe this time next year...

Thanks for sticking with us through this mess.

Anyway, I guess it's about time to hit the hardware fund tipjar...

#19  Fred if you can get someone to pony up for the board with an Intel dual 771 socket (I suggest a server board by by SuperMicro), I can give you one Xeon dual core 5130 (and possibly a second if I can get it from a salvage machine that I may be able to grab) and maybe 2x 1GB of 240 pin PC2-5300. I also have a line on a pair of 80GB Cheetah 7200.9's and a raid controller.

And don't worry - they didn;t "fall off the back of the truck".

I get stuff from friends who are decomissioning servers - I have some friends whose "enviro" corporate types do not allow them to scavenge them (per their compnay = too much of an opportunity to "steal" company property), nor can they reuse parts since its not under warranty from thier server supplier, and they have to pay for "green disposal".

So I get them a cert for the corpse from a local recycler, and pick it for the parts after I test them. HD's and chips are always 1-2 behind the curve, but a Xeon 5130 is a great starter chip, and a dual core will scream.

Most of the time, I try to refurb them with Linux for charity if they are workable. But I hav no real use for server-class cpus. I just happened to keep this one and some ram to cobble together a server - may as well cobble one together for you.

So all, Thats one Xeon 5130 Dual Core Server CPU Socket 771.

Anyone else want to step up?
