Afghanistan
Victoria Cross - posthumous
A hero soldier who died saving seven comrades from Taleban gunfire has been awarded the highest recognition for gallantry, the Victoria Cross. Corporal Bryan Budd, 29, of Ripon, North Yorkshire, was killed when he single-handedly stormed a Taleban position in Afghanistan, in August.

It is the first posthumous VC to be awarded since the Falklands war.

He had a daughter aged two and his wife gave birth to their second child a month after he was killed in action.

A member of the 3rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment and originally from Scunthorpe, he was the 20th UK serviceman to die in Afghanistan since the start of operations in November, 2001.

He had been in the Army for 10 years, serving in Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone, Macedonia, Iraq and Afghanistan. He was about to be promoted to platoon sergeant.

His commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Tootal, said at the time of his death he was a natural leader. "Bryan died doing the job he loved, leading his men from the front - where he always was," he said.

The Victoria Cross was created in 1856 to honour soldiers of the British Empire during the Crimean War who showed gallantry in the face of enemy attack.

Cpl Budd's wife Lorena, 23, a clerk with the Royal Artillery, said after the announcement: "Bryan will always be remembered by me as a loving husband and father to our two beautiful daughters, Isabelle and Imogen. "The exceptional act of valour and the subsequent award of the Victoria Cross is representative of the sort of man Bryan was. "He was a proud and passionate Parachute Regiment soldier and he was someone who was prepared to make the very highest sacrifice to save the lives of others."

*smiles through tears* I just turned on the computer for the first time today, Shipman... It looks like others beat me to it -- he sounds like a husband and a father and a comrade and a countryman to be proud of. The Victoria Cross gains additional shine when given to such a man. Rest well, Corporal Budd, you've done your bit to change the world into what it ought to be.

#1  My brother is a B-1 navigator, deployed a few times to the area. He's flown air support a few times. Sometimes he didn't need to drop any ordinance. Two supersonic passes 3000 feet over the enemy holed up in a farmhouse, and a subsonic pass dropping flares, convinced them to surrender.

#6  C'mon Eric: if the callsign exceeds the RB's patented "Risqu-O-Meter" the duty mod will sinktrap it. And being Air Force, I am sure it will almost come up to the average "Risqu-O-Meter" value pegged by any number of Naval Avaitors' callsigns. But the AF does have better ascots ( or dickeys, or whatever they are called).

#7  True story: I was up in the foothills of the N. Georgia mountains, when a B1B flew overhead. We were in a cow field (one of my friends' farms), when it flew probably 200 or so feet over my head (I could literally see the pilot's eyes/goggles as he zoomed over). I didn't even hear him, until he was past me (he came from behind me). I said WTH? My friend replied, "Oh, we're used to that up here. They fly training runs for "under the radar" up in the foothills up here from Dobbins AFB." I've never come so close to soiling my drawers as I did that day. After I calmed down, I thought to myself, how many people get to be on the (peaceful) side of seeing power in action like that? Quite the spectacle....can't imagine what they're like providing close air support in the mountains of Afghanistan.

In any case, I don't want anyone comparing him to one of those 'fake Marines' we've seen stories about. He's getting promoted to Lt. Col. next year. On the other hand, he has stories about those French…

#13  One of the (many) highlights of my military career was being on a SAC base during an exercise, when all the B-52s and tankers left the field as fast as they could get off the ground. It was like one continuous thunderclap for about 45 minutes, as BUFFS and KC-135s left the runway about every 45 seconds. It was 3:15 in the morning, but we were all outside watching. Quite an inspiring sight!

Over 2000 "militants" killed in Afghanistan since 9/1/2006
This is supposedly from the wires, but couldn't find it via google. So, I linked to my local newspaper's website. Mods feel free to move to WoT Background if needed, as this is a summary of Our/NATO's "activities" since 9/1/2006. May I add that I love the name "Operation Medusa" too!
BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Almost 2,100 militants have been killed in Afghanistan since Sept. 1 in operations involving coalition special forces soldiers, a U.S. Army spokesman said.

That means more than half of the country's insurgency-related deaths this year have come in the last three months. About 900 of the 2,077 deaths came during Operation Medusa, a major offensive in September in the province of Kandahar.

Suicide bomber kills 8 in Afghanistan
KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN Dec 13 — A Taliban suicide bomber killed eight people inside an Afghan provincial governor's compound Tuesday, officials said, and President Hamid Karzai accused neighboring Pakistan of being the Taliban's "boss."

The bomb, which went off in a parking lot, did not injure Helmand Gov. Mohammed Daoud, but a district chief was among the dead. Eight people were injured. It was the second deadly attack near Daoud's office in the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah, in less than three months.

Taliban militants have increasingly targeted government officials. Since September, they have killed one provincial governor, narrowly missed another, and killed several district-level police, intelligence and administrative chiefs.

The attacks are aimed at undermining the government of Karzai, who Tuesday directly accused Pakistan's government of supporting the insurgency.

"The problem is not Taliban. We don't see it that way. The problem is with Pakistan," Karzai said in an interview with foreign journalists during a trip to Kandahar, the Taliban's former stronghold.

Asked whether Pakistan was essentially the boss of the Taliban, Karzai responded, "Absolutely. That has been the case from the very first day. That is how the Taliban came into being. It's more than a boss.

"The state of Pakistan was supporting the Taliban, so we presume if there is still any Taliban, that they are being supported by a state element."

Pakistan has denied that it falls short in countering the Taliban, though it has signed an agreement with militants to withdraw troops from an area near the Afghan border.

Taliban militant killed, 8 others injured in W Afghanistan
(Xinhua) -- One Taliban insurgent was killed and eight others were wounded by police in Farah province of western Afghanistan Wednesday morning, the provincial police chief told Xinhua. About 25 Taliban militants attacked a police post in Bala Buluk district, said Sayed Aqa Saqib, adding the police fought back and caused the Taliban casualties. There were no casualties of the police, he added. Farah province, a relatively calm region, has occasionally witnessed Taliban-linked attacks or clashes.

Four militant bases destroyed in Chechnya
(Interfax) - Russian Interior Ministry units have found and destroyed four military bases in Chechnya over the past 24 hours. "One of the destroyed bases was located in the vicinity of the village of Galaity in the Nozhai-Yurt district. Another two bases were found a kilometer and a half from the village of Meskety in the republic's Nozhai-Yurt district. The largest of them consisted of three dugouts capable of accommodating up to 50 people," a source in the headquarters of the Combined Federal Forces in the North Caucasus told Interfax by phone on Wednesday.

Ammunition, improvised explosive devices and army uniforms were confiscated from the bases, he said.

Home Front: WoT
Authorities Probe Foreign Student Seeking Commercial Truck-Driving HAZMAT License
By Liza Porteus
NEW YORK — Mohammed Yusef Mullawala wanted a license to transport hazardous materials and to learn how to drive commercial tractor trailers. There was nothing unusual about that, until he told his teacher that he only wanted to learn how to drive forward, and he wanted to learn fast.

That was enough to raise a red flag with Darleen Crawford, president of the Nationwide Tractor Trailer Driving School in Smithfield, R.I., where Mullawala took driving classes.

Federal and state authorities are investigating why Mullawala was seeking a commercial trucking license after his behavior raised flags at the Rhode Island driving school. Crawford said he was also insistent on taking the test necessary to earn a license to transport hazardous materials.

Mullawala, a 28-year-old citizen of India who is of Pakistani descent, is now in federal custody in Massachusetts on immigration violation charges.

"We are still digging into his background, digging into where he lived in Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey," Major Steven O'Donnell with the Rhode Island State Police told FOXNews.com on Wednesday. "A lot of still doesn't make any sense, why he would be doing what he was doing."

Crawford said Mullawala came to the school with a Rhode Island driver's license inquiring how to obtain a commercial driver's license within a month. It normally takes around eight weeks for a student to go through all of the required courses before he or she obtains a permit, she said.

"We've been doing this for quite a long time and a lot of things just didn't add up," Crawford said.

Crawford started documenting suspicious activity: Mullawala lived in New York City but traveled to Rhode Island for the driving classes; he missed his first day of classes; and he was very insistent on getting his hazardous material transport license.

But the fact that he only seemed interested in driving forward was the most concerning.
You don't say.

"We tell them from Day One, 'you will be backing up,' 'you'll be backing up every single day,'" Crawford said, adding that it normally takes two to three weeks of practice backing up before drivers get road permits and learn how to drive forward, among other things.

The situation was reminiscent of when some of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers told their flight-school instructor they were only interested in how to fly planes at certain altitudes, not so much how to land or take off.

"He was just really pushing to get out of here," Crawford said. "I've been doing this for 30 years so you just sort of know when something doesn't feel right."

After Mullawala took two classes, Crawford contacted Highway Watch, which had conducted an anti-terrorism and safety program at her school.

Jim Sutton, director of the Highway Watch's Information Sharing and Analysis Center, said it was the "calibrated judgment" of his five-person staff of former military, national intelligence and security officers that caused them to pass Mullawala's information on to federal authorities.

"Over a period of time, you learn that certain indicators are very valid, that they just stand out," Sutton said. "They're so anomalous to the norm that you say to yourself, 'there is something here. We need to pursue, we need to follow up.'"

In Mullawala's case, Sutton said, "there was a sense of urgency he had in finishing the course."

"Well, you don't learn those type of mechanical skills very fast," he added.

The ISAC contacted the Department of Homeland Security, which contacted Rhode Island state police.

A joint investigation was then launched by investigators from the Rhode Island State Fusion Center, the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) in Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey and the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Investigators learned that when Mullawala obtained his driver's license from the Rhode Island Registry of Motor Vehicles, he gave a false statement indicating he was a Rhode Island resident. ICE then determined he was a citizen of India and in the United States on an expired temporary student visa.

On Tuesday, Mullawala went to state police headquarters thinking he was responding to another matter. He was then apprehended and turned over to ICE.

He's being held in the federal Suffolk County detention center in Boston until his immigration hearing in Boston, which is expected to be sometime within the next few weeks. He will be charged with overstaying his visa and is facing possible deportation back to India.

O'Donnell said his department, as well as the New York and New Jersey JTTFs, are investigating Mullawala's background and the residences he had in those three states.

Authorities have not yet turned up the names of any other specific individuals Mullawala may have been conspiring with.

"He didn't have family, he did have friends," O'Donnell said, adding that authorities are trying to track down people Mullawala was associated with in New York, where his most recent address is located.

That address is 161 84th Road in Jamaica, Queens, according to Rhode Island police. He also has a residence on Carpenter Street in Providence, R.I., which he apparently hasn't lived at since 2003.

Police are also studying a computer taken from one of Mullawala's residence, O'Donnell said, adding that the man apparently was a computer expert. They will look at his e-mails, as well as any Web sites he frequented. Any potential overseas connections will be handled by the FBI and DHS, O'Donnell said, although none have yet turned up.

An official at the New York JTTF office contacted by FOXNews.com said he could not comment on the status of this or any ongoing investigation.

More than 500,000 transportation workers — including school-bus drivers to mass transit workers — call in tips as part of the Highway Watch program, said spokesman John Willard. The Highway Watch ISAC vets the calls to determine which ones are substantial enough to pass on to federal authorities.

"We get a few hundred [calls] a month," Willard said. "They range from anything from 'there's a guy in his car on the side of a road' ... to 'I'm witnessing a crime' ... to 'there's this person who seems suspicious.'"

He added: "We've gotten a few of those we believe have led to very credible investigations."

The Highway Watch ISAC was first established by DHS in March of 2004. The original Highway Watch was set up in 1998 as a safety program and run by the American Trucking Association up until 2004. It added an anti-terrorism and security training program in the spring of 2002, which almost every major trucking company in the United States is now mandating for their drivers, Willard said.

The course teaches drivers how to keep themselves safe by always keeping their trucks locked, and not keeping the vehicles running when they're not in them. It also provides various emergency contact and tipline numbers.

But it also tells people what kinds of activity to be on the alert for.

"Casing," for example, can include activities such as an individual inquiring about details, of hazardous material deliveries. There was one situation in Florida where a man was seen videotaping hazardous material dropoffs, Willard said.

"We talk to them about how a typical terrorist act is carried out," he added. "Terrorists typically don't wake up on Tuesday morning and blow something up on Tuesday afternoon. It normally goes through an extensive process of targeting, casing, etc… The first thing we do is make drivers aware of that process."

I don't know, gorb. Methinks these aren't the brightest bulbs in the pack or the sharpest knives in the drawer. The 9/11 goon's thingy about only learnin' to fly after takeoff was spread far and wide in the media. Anyone who does something analogous to that at a trucking school is an idiot (even if it were an 80 year old Irish grandma asking it). But, especially after last week's wake-up call with the imams "flying while Muslim", I'm beginning to think the average Joe out there "gets it", even if you can't say it aloud because of P.C. Much like the idiot in the '93 WTC bombing, who went back to the truck rental company to get his deposit back (said it was stolen, when it was still a smokin' crater in the parking deck). NOT very bright!

Terror Fears as Blind Sheikh Faces Hell 'Medical Emergency'
The imprisoned al Qaeda spiritual leader known as the "Blind Sheikh" suffered a "medical emergency" at the Springfield federal prison last week, and the FBI is warning his death could lead al Qaeda to launch terror attacks against the United States in reprisal.
it's been 5+ years of empty threats. the death of another ignorant boat-buggerer masquerading as a holy man is only going to make 72 virgins mad.
According to an FBI bulletin, obtained by ABCNews.com, the 68-year-old Omar Abdel-Rahman began to spit up blood on Dec. 6, and was rushed from prison to the emergency room of St. John's Regional Hospital in Springfield, Mo.
Hope the pain is unbearable.
"He accepted a needed transfusion to replace lost blood. While he was under examination, medical authorities also discovered a tumor on his liver," the FBI situational awareness bulletin noted.
Make sure and tell him the blood is Kosher.
Omar Abdel-Rahman, convicted in 1996 of conspiring to blow up New York City landmarks, has long suffered from diabetes and heart ailments and has spent much of his imprisonment at the Springfield Medical Center for federal prisoners.
We take care of the islamocockroaches better than our own. That's really sad. What he deserves is a daily cattle prod where the sun don't shine.
The FBI bulletin reminded authorities that the sheikh had previously called for reprisal attacks in the case of his death in prison. The bulletin cited what it said was his last will and testament distributed at an al Qaeda press conference in 1998.
I want my entire estate split between my two goats and a sheep.
"My Brothers...If they [the Americans] kill me, which they will certainly do – hold my funeral and send my corpse to my family, but do not let my blood be shed in vain. Rather, extract the most violent revenge, and remember your brother who spoke the truth and died for the will of God...The Mujahid Sheikh Omar Abdel al Rahman. In the name of God the kind and merciful."
Personally I would like Freddy Krueger to be tbe mortician. What he deserves is for his rotting corpse to be left for the vultures.
The FBI bulletin also notes, "During Ramadan of this past year, al-Qa'ida in Iraq (AQI) released a videotape encouraging all Muslims in Iraq to exert efforts in capturing Western personnel so that they may be exchanged for the release of the Blind Sheik, suggesting that the Blind Sheikh remains a significant source of inspiration for AQ and their sympathizers."
He's a source of inspiration for the demonic and mentally deranged jihadi movement...which is similar to the bowel movement.

India-Pakistan
ISI hems in ailing Dawood Ibrahim

NEW DELHI: India’s most wanted fugitive, Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar, is under pressure to leave Pakistan and may have suffered a heart attack.

Intelligence sources in New Delhi said the gangster, who is the prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, suffered the attack a couple of weeks ago and was taken to an Islamabad hospital. But no details were available.

The report about the heart attack comes amidst indications that Pakistan is finally tightening the screws on Dawood. His men are also under intense pressure elsewhere, especially in the UAE, their erstwhile safe haven in the Gulf, from where 10 members of his gang were deported to Mumbai on November 21.

The gangster, who has a new look after cosmetic surgery last year, is under constant pressure from government agencies in Pakistan to leave, the sources said. If he does leave, he is expected to seek refuge in some African countries. He has mining interests in northern Africa and investments in Australia.

After the media glare on his daughter’s wedding with Javed Miandad’s son last year, Dawood moved to Islamabad, where he has been leading a quiet life. A couple of months ago, Indian agencies reported that he visited Mecca on a pilgrimage.

The pressure on Dawood to leave coincides with Pakistan’s efforts to control the influx of terrorists in Kashmir. Indian intelligence agencies are yet to form an opinion if these are tactical moves by the Pervez Musharraf regime to impress the global community.

Afzal Guru moves SC against his death sentence
The 2001 Indian parliament attack convict Mohammmad Afzal Guru on Wednesday moved a curative petition in the Supreme Court here against his death sentence even as the opposition stressed the urgency for his immediate hanging. The petition was moved amid official ceremonies in Parliament House to mark the fifth anniversary of the attempted attack on the Indian parliament building.

Families of security personnel killed on December 13 while gunning down terrorists, marched to the Rashtrapati Bhawan and returned gallantry medals awarded posthumously to the personnel. Home Minister Shivraj Patil asserted in the Rajya Sabha that the families had already received financial help and rejected BJP-Shiv Sena’s demand for Afzal’s immediate hanging pointing out that it takes up to seven years to decide on clemency petitions. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for a post-lunch session after opposition members began shouting slogans against Guru.

Patil added to the fury of the protestors by pointing out that many clemency petitions were kept pending even during the NDA regime. Referring to an earlier detailed statement in Parliament on the fate of numerous clemency petitions, he pointed out that it took six to seven years before a decision could be taken on such petitions.

COALITION FORCES USE A PRECISION GUIDED MUNITION TO DESTROY INSURGENT POSITION

CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq – Coalition Forces used a precision guided munition to destroy a building from which insurgents used to fight Wednesday in Ramadi.
Love these ROE!

Coalition Forces were attacked by small arms fire from insurgents in a building and returned fire. When the attack did not cease, Coalition Forces used a precision guided munition to destroy the building. Two insurgents were killed.
At least we think there were two - found four feet.

Iraqi Police Fend Off Ambush in Ramadi, Arrest 26
CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq – Iraqi Police in western Ramadi fought through an ambush and cleared three buildings Sunday.

More than forty Iraqi police responded quickly to reports of kidnappings of university students by Al Qaeda insurgents in the notorious Tameen neighborhood. As the police force approached, insurgents attacked them with rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire from three buildings.

The police exchanged gunfire with the insurgents and entered the buildings, searching them from room to room. An Iraqi Army patrol responded to the policemen’s call for back-up and joined the firefight against the insurgents. Coalition Forces also responded to the call for back-up and assisted with security in the area.

The police, based out of the Al Huriyah Station, searched and secured the buildings themselves while Coalition Forces provided security. The fight lasted for three hours.

An Iraqi Policeman was killed in action and four civilians were wounded in the crossfire. The wounded were evacuated to the nearest Coalition medical center. The Iraqi Police detained 26 suspected insurgents and returned to their posts in the city.

Iraqi Troops Free 23, Arrest Six, Wax One
BAGHDAD – Iraqi Soldiers, with the support of coalition forces, found 23 hostages and arrested six kidnappers when conducting ongoing operations in a western neighborhood of the Iraqi capital Dec. 11.

The 4th Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division team observed two vehicles that had stopped a local national bus, forcing the passengers off the bus at approximately 10:40 a.m.. The Iraqi Army Soldiers pursued the suspects who got back into the two vehicles and drove off in separate directions.

The Iraqi Army soldiers stopped one of the fleeing vehicles west of an established checkpoint in the area. One kidnapper was killed and two others wounded due to the small arms fire used by the Iraqi soldiers to stop the fleeing car. In the trunk of the stopped vehicle, one kidnap victim was found.

The other car, a white Daiwoo, was also followed from the location where passengers were forced from a bus. The Iraqi Army pursued this vehicle until it stopped in front of a house nearby. Two additional kidnap victims were freed from the trunk of the vehicle and 20 more kidnap victims were found inside the house. Six kidnappers were detained from this incident.

After further investigation, most of the kidnapped victims are believed to be Shi’a and predominately from Abu Ghraib and Ramadi. Some of the victims showed signs of abuse; they had been badly beaten.

All 23 rescued victims have been transferred to the 4/1/6 IA Headquarters and are receiving medical treatment.

The kidnappers have been identified as Sunni’s. The kidnapping cell leader, a Syrian named Abu Mousan, escaped capture.

The incident is still under investigation.

Peace Accord Signed in Eastern Baghdad
FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq – In an historic meeting in the Tuwaitha Village area of eastern Baghdad, members of the Jisr Diyala Nahia (council), Iraqi security force officials, and local Shia and Sunni leaders reached an initial agreement to work to end the sectarian violence in their neighborhoods.

The meeting, first discussed after a recent spike in sectarian violence in the area, is a starting point for a future peace accord for the entire region.

The summit ended with the Shia and Sunni sheiks shaking hands with one another, planning another meeting to sign a formal peace agreement at a later date.

Seven car bombs kill 29 people in Iraq
(Xinhua) -- Seven car bombs exploded across Iraq during the past 24 hours, killing 29 and wounding dozens of others, seen as a setback for Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's plans to curb sectarian violence in the war-torn country.

At least 10 people were killed and 26 others wounded when a car bomb went off near a Shiite mosque in Kamaliyah neighborhood in southeastern Baghdad. Two more car bombs went off in quick succession near the Sunnial-Samarraie mosque in the Baghdad al-Jadida neighborhood, killing five people and wounding 10 others.

In a separate incident, two suicide truck bombs went off at abase housing the Iraqi army's 1st Brigade tasked with protecting oil infrastructure in the Rayadh area, 60 km southwest of Kirkuk, killing 10 soldiers and wounding 13 others.

Also on Wednesday, a car bomb detonated near a pharmacy close to the al-Yarmouk Hospital in western Baghdad, slightly wounding two.

Late on Tuesday, a suicide car bomber drove his car into an Iraqi army base on the main road between Tikrit and Kirkuk, killing four soldiers and wounding 14 others.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Haniyeh’s bodyguard killed, son wounded in convoy attack

Hat tip to liberalhawk
Palestinian PM’s bodyguard killed, his son, another bodyguard and political advisor wounded when gunmen open fire at their convoy as it leaves Rafah crossing; PA official: Abbas; presidential guard responsible

A Palestinian official said one of Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh's bodyguards was killed when his convoy came under fire as he left Rafah Thursday night. Another bodyguard, the prime minister's son and a political adviser were wounded, the official said, holding members of Abbas' presidential guard responsible.
This should heat things up just slightly.
The son was not seriously wounded, officials said.
Too bad, it might make the terrorist kingpins think twice if their families started getting offed. Time for them to share in the pain.
Hamas followers of Haniyeh exchanged fire with rival Fatah forces several times during the day, and the gunfire continued as Haniyeh’s convoy passed through the checkpoint from Egypt after a long wait. Israel had banned him from entering Gaza with millions of dollars in cash.
At least Israel is regrowing some of its brain tissue.
Earlier it was reported that Haniyeh's passage from Egypt into Gaza was delayed due to the fact that European monitors, who eventually approved his entry into the Strip, refused to make their way to the Rafah crossing for fear that the thousands of Hamas supporters who had gathered there would attack them.
And they were probably right. Especially as Haniyeh was coming back empty-handed.
As word of the drama in Rafah spread throughout the Strip, Hamas leaders called on thousands of the group’s supporters to make their way to the crossing and assist in taking it over.
It speaks volumes that the Egyptians simply didn't begin hosing down the assembling crowd with automatic gunfire. Their hatred of the Jews blinds them to even their own national security. Cairo will pay for this if ever Israel is forced to employ the Sampson Option.
During the gathering, exchanges of fire took place between Hamas gunmen and members of Mahmoud Abbas’ Presidential Guard; additional gun battles erupted between Hamas gunmen and Egyptian security officers, who attempted to prevent the crowd from reaching the border fence.
"Popcorn, get'cher hot buttered popcorn, right here!"
Hamas supporters chanted curses and threats against the European monitors, accusing them of cooperating with Israel to prevent Haniyeh’s entrance into Gaza.
You'd think that by now Europe might have noticed what a fickle bedfellow Hamas is.

Without denying that Jewhatred probably exists in Egypts security services, I could come up with several reasons for them not mowing down the Hamasniks

1. Fear of a revolution by the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt
2. Incompetence
3. Cowardice
4. A preference that Hamas and Fatah kill each other off
5. Attempts to maintain influence as "honest broker"
6. Bribery

#7  Anyway, isnt the egyptian side of the border desert, or surrounded by desert? Its not like it would be that easy for anyone from Gaza to sneak into El Arish, let alone across the Canal. And the boomers in Sinai seem to be locals - sure it wouldnt be GREAT to have them have easy contact with Gaza, but its not a threat to Cairo the way that Gaza access to Israel is a threat.

#8  its not a threat to Cairo the way that Gaza access to Israel is a threat.

Which is something that really needs to change. Egypt's flaccid opposition to terrorist operations needs to carry a much bigger price tag. I was more than amused to see hints tossed out that Israel's Sampson Option might include some European targets (with a big nudge, nudge to all the folks at home in France). Somehow, Egypt needs to be given a dose of salts regarding exactly what their continued complicity with Palestinian terror operations will reap for them. I'm especially disappointed that our own government does not do more to make Egypt feel Israel's pain.

Egypt is waiting for another round of dhimmi carter negotiations which amounts to nothing more than protection money paid by the USA taxpayer for the right not to have their ass handed to them by Israel.

It's really not that difficult to see why countries like to create problems for America. We pay them off to behave. It's like giving candy to a three year old so that he'll stop crying. There's no surer way to get a three year old to cry.

Hamas gunmen go on rampage injuring 13 and killing one

At least 13 Palestinians, including son of Palestinian PM and his political adviser were wounded and one of his bodyguards was killed Thursday at Gaza's Rafah border crossing after Hamas gunmen went on a rampage waiting for prime minister Ismail Haniya to cross back into the strip after being detained by an Israeli closure.

Gunbattle Prompts Gaza Crossing Shutdown
The gaza-meltdown goes on, see stories below, summarized here.
By Casper the friendly ghost IBRAHIM BARZAK Associated Press Writer

RAFAH, Gaza Strip - Hamas terrorists militants, angry that Israel had blocked the Palestinian prime minister's return to Gaza, burst into the Rafah border terminal Thursday and engaged in a gunbattle with guards before it was closed. After dark, two loud explosions rocked the area and police said terrorists militants blew a hole in the border fence about a half-mile from the crossing.

During the shootout at the Rafah border crossing, travelers dived for cover and a top Hamas official furiously tried to persuade the militants to disperse. Later, European monitors said the border would not be reopened Thursday. Two Hamas gunnies militants were wounded in the gunbattle.

Haniyeh, a senior leader of Hamas, cut short a lengthy trip abroad to try to quell the factional violence at home. But Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz ordered the border closed to prevent Haniyeh from bringing in tens of millions of dollars he raised abroad for his cash-strapped government, Israeli security officials said.
Heh, and they knew Haniyeh was a pack-mule this time.
Haniyeh headed to the border yesterday in a second attempt to cross, this time without the money, which was left with Palestinian terrorists officials in the Sinai town of el-Arish, said Palestinian official Hani Jabour, who was with Haniyeh.
"Sure Izzy, we'll keep the money safe for you! No problemo!"
"How do I know you'll be honest?"
"Pshaw, Izzy, we're just like you!"
"Like I was saying ..."

#1  Top Hamas officials have recently smuggled in millions of dollars to help keep the government afloat. A Palestinian official said Haniyeh was carrying $35 million he raised during his recent trip, which included stops in Syria and Iran. Hamas militants waiting outside the Rafah terminal grew impatient waiting for Haniyeh's the money's return and broke into the compound, shooting in the air.

There. Fixed it.

Gunbattle breaks out in Gaza city as police try to arrest militant IBRAHIM BARZAK GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip

(AP) - Palestinian intelligence officers trying to arrest a Hamas-linked militant Thursday morning came under a hail of gunfire in a Gaza City neighbourhood in a battle that wounded three police officers and underscored the growing violence between rival Palestinian groups in Gaza.

The arrest came in connection with the killing Monday of the three young children of a Palestinian security chief allied with Fatah, an attack that sparked a new round of internal Palestinian violence and damaged efforts to form a national unity government between the rival Fatah and Hamas groups.

IDF, GSS Crack Extensive Islamic Jihad Network
by Nissan Ratzlav-Katz

Released for publication: Israeli security services have cracked, over recent months, an extensive network of Islamic Jihad terrorists in the Hevron Hills. Dozens have been arrested.

The network consisted of several cells operating from within various Arab villages in the area of Dura in the southern Hevron Hills. Thus far, about 50 members of the Dura-area Islamic Jihad network have been arrested in joint IDF-General Security Services (GSS) operations. Seven of those arrested were intending to commit suicide bombings against Jewish targets inside Israel's pre-1967 borders.

Among the terrorists recently arrested were senior Islamic Jihad leaders from Dura, Muhammad and Yusuf Fakeyeh. The two were students at An-Najah University in Shechem, from where they organized Islamic Jihad activities aimed at the establishment of an explosives factory in their hometown. The two were also responsible for organizing terrorist attacks, including the drafting of plans to infiltrate Jewish communities, execute suicide bombings and carry out kidnappings.

During the counter-terrorist raids smashing the Islamic Jihad network, IDF forces discovered materials and components used in the making of explosives. Also confiscated were computer discs containing information about producing explosives and constructing explosive devices.
And pr0n. Lot of pr0n.

GSS sources said that the uncovering of the Islamic Jihad network, and the swift arrest of those involved in planning and organizing terrorist attacks, prevented the establishment of a dangerous terrorist infrastructure. Without intervention, they said, the network could have become operational and carried out serious attacks against Israelis.

The sources noted that the very existence of the Dura network indicates the strong resilience of the Islamic Jihad, inasmuch as there have been several IDF operations that successfully broke up Islamic Jihad cells in the same region in recent years. Cells of the organization in the Hevron Hills have carried out many terrorist attacks against local Jewish targets, including fatal attacks against Israeli civilians.

The current Islamic Jihad network in Dura was revealed during the interrogation of arrested terrorist Hani Rajoub in July. Rajoub, from Dura himself, was among those tasked with reorganizing and expanding an Islamic Jihad terror network in the Hevron Hills following a wave of arrests of the organization's local members in May and June of 2005. Along with co-conspirators, Rajoub recruited many terrorists from among local Arab civilians and assigned them the task of recruiting others in their hometowns. The network's leaders and initiates also began seeking out weapons and secluded areas for training, as well as starting experiments for the production of explosives.

The leadership of the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization is based in Damascus, Syria, from where it also receives funding. The group's principal financial support, however, is from Iran, and it has heavily allied itself with the Iranian-backed Hizbullah terrorist organization in Lebanon.

Prominent Hamas Rebel Is Killed as Palestinians Renew Infighting
JERUSALEM, Dec. 13 — In renewed fighting among Palestinians, gunmen forced a prominent Hamas militant to his knees on Wednesday, then shot him dead outside a courthouse where he worked, in the southern Gaza Strip.

Hamas, the militant Islamic group that leads the Palestinian government, said a “death squad” from the rival Fatah faction was responsible for the killing of the militant, Bassam al-Farra, in Khan Yunis. Fatah denied involvement.

The shooting occurred just two days after unidentified gunmen in Gaza City killed three sons, ages 3 to 9, of Baha Balousha, a senior Palestinian security officer and Fatah member. “This is a very dangerous situation,” said Fauzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman. “There has been an escalation in the violence and the chaos.”

Jail sentences confirmed for Iraq rebel recruiters
The State Security Court on Wednesday confirmed jail sentences against seven Jordanians accused of recruiting men to fight US forces in Iraq after an appeals court approved them. The suspects were handed reduced jail sentences in March and their lawyers appealed the verdict but the appeals court backed the decisions taken by the military tribunal, an AFP correspondent said.

In March, alleged ringleader Ziad Horani and co-defendant Khaled Sarqush each received five years of hard labour. Their sentences were reduced to four years to allow them to “improve themselves.” Four others were sentenced each to five years, with their terms reduced to three years for the same reason. The final defendant saw his sentence reduced to 20 months from three years and four months.

The suspects were indicted in July 2005 for “carrying out an activity not approved by the government, which jeopardised Jordan’s relations with another country,” namely neighbouring Iraq, court papers said. Defence lawyers initially demanded that former foreign minister Marwan Muasher testify as to whether the suspects had actually done anything to harm ties with Iraq, but finally dropped the demand. The suspects were specifically accused of recruiting fighters in Jordan and then sending them to neighbouring Syria to receive military training and then eventually infiltrate across the borders to Iraq.

Hamas-linked suspects plead not guilty
Three Jordanians accused of plotting terror attacks in the Kingdom on behalf of Hamas pleaded not guilty at the start of their trial. They face the death penalty on charges of “conspiracy to carry out terrorist acts” as well as “illegal possession of explosives and weapons.”

The tribunal also dismissed arguments by their defence lawyers that the trial was political and does not fall under the jurisdiction of the State Security Court. The presiding judge backed the state prosecutor, who insisted the case was related to state security and therefore should be heard by the military tribunal. The trial was adjourned to December 27.

The suspects were arrested in April and May as part of a sweep that netted 20 people. On May 11, they confessed on state television that they had plotted to kill senior officials in the intelligence services. At the time, Ayman Naji Hamadallah, a 34-year-old identified as the plot’s mastermind, spoke of his links to Hamas and said he had staked out the home of an intelligence officer who was to be targeted. Hamadallah, who said he made frequent trips to Syria, added that after his arrest he tipped off the authorities about a weapons caché in northern Jordan. Footage of the seized weapons, including Iranian-made Katyusha rockets, was also shown on television. The other two suspects are Ahmad Abu Rabieh, 27, and Ahmad Abu Diab, 29, the latter described as a Muslim preacher from Mafraq, a town on the Syrian border.

Three jailed for seeking to join Iraqi insurgency
In another case yesterday, the court jailed three men for trying to join Iraq rebels and acquitted two others. Judicial sources said Mahmoud Abdul Aal and Yousef Shafei were sentenced to three years in jail each, while Khalil Ennabi was sentenced to one year. Ayman Khawaldeh and Jamil Rayan were acquitted of any wrongdoing, the sources added.

The five defendants faced between three to five years in prison on charges of “carrying out activities that undermine Jordan’s security and its ties with a foreign country,” according to court papers. Their trial opened in June, three months after they were arrested when they returned home from neighbouring Syria, from where they had hoped to travel to Iraq to join insurgents fighting Iraqi and US-led coalition troops.

Hamas, Fatah militants clash in central Gaza Strip
Red-on-Red once again at the Paleo Theater.
(Xinhua) -- Armed clash between the ruling Hamas movement and its rival Fatah movement erupted again in central Gaza Strip on Wednesday evening, wounding at least one Palestinian, local witnesses said.
There they go erupting themselves all over the place.
They said that the clash broke out after a gunman hurled a homemade hand grenade at crowds of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) supporters who were demonstrating in the Nuseirat Refugee camp in central Gaza Strip against an earlier killing of a judge and a senior Hamas figure in southern Gaza Strip. The explosion triggered immediately the exchange of fire between Hamas and Fatah militants, they added.
"We had to get Dire Revenge™! We just had to, anyone can understand that!"
Earlier Wednesday, a 45-year old judge of a Palestinian court in southern Gaza Strip named Bassam el-Farra, who is also a member of Hamas movement, was shot dead by unknown gunmen on his way to the court in the city of Khan Younis.
Yup, unknown hard boyz, nobody saw nothing, nobody knows who they are: Fatah, Islamic Jihad, Crips, Bloods, Lutherans, Esquimaux ...
The assassination against the Hamas member came two days after Monday's killing of three children of an intelligence officer loyal to Abbas, who is the head of Fatah.
Kids paid for the sins of the father.
Since then, the revenge killings between the two rival movements are running high in the Gaza Strip, where six Palestinians have been killed and eight others wounded in the spiralling wave of chaos.

Southeast Asia
Jihadis kill two at municipal office in southern Thailand
Six suspected Muslim insurgents stormed into a local government office Thursday and opened fire, killing two people and injuring one, police said. The gunmen arrived on motorcycles, entered the Krong Pinang municipal office in Yala province and started firing, said police Lt. Wannawut Saengsenya. A member of the local administrative council was killed, along with an employee who managed the office storeroom.

Both men were Buddhists, who are among the targets of insurgent violence that has gripped Thailand's three southernmost Muslim-majority provinces — Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat — since January 2004. More than 1,900 people have been killed.

#10  who are we rooting for - well it depends on your POV.

If youre true lefty loon, you believe Hamas won fair and square in the elections, banning them cause of terror is just western imperialist hypocrisy, so you root for Hamas.

If youre Sec Rice, Amir Peretz, or (I think) Ehud Olmert, you root for Fatah. While their rank and file includes some nasty folks, your main problem with Abbas has been his unwillingness to go to the mattresses with Hamas, which a fight with Hamas ipso facto negates. If he wins you get negotiations with somebody sane, and maybe a decent peace agreement, which leaves you free to focus on Iran and Syria and Al Qaeeda. Oh, and the fact that some of the nastier folks in Fatah may die in the course of this is a side bonus.

If youre Bibi Netanyahu, or (I suspect Mark Steyn, etc, etc) you dont really root for anyone, I think. You fear an Abbas victory that will entice Israel (pressured by Washington) into negotiations with Abbas, as much as you fear a Hamas victory.

#13  We don't want to bring on bad karma, but it would seem to me that we wish for the most violent, self-destructive civil war in Paleo-Land. The warring factions need to deplete and totally exhaust themselves. In that way, the worst of them will be gone without Israel's help. Hamas is overt. They want Israel and her people destroyed. That is their program. Fatah has the same objectives, but they do it in a devious way, promising the moon and peace, but never delivering. Bottom line---they are the same untrustworthy souls, bent on Israel's destruction.

Israel can play Charlie Brown, Lucie, and the Football delusional game, or they can quit the game and make their actions based upon the self-defense needs of Israel's people. Fatah offers promises and does not deliver on anything. Israel honors its promises and provides water, sewer, and electricity to the Paleo Rocketeers, to boot. Right now, who is the dumb one and who is the smart one?

Wall off the ghettos from Israel and let the Paleos sort it out in their own cultural way. No interference unless Israel is attacked, which also means rocket, and for that, use JDAMS and airpower. Keep the troops out of the Paleo hellhole.
