kelp is in no way able to support weight, nor does even Giant Kelp, which, off San Diego, grows 1.5' a day grow close enough together to allow this "pathway". They need sunlight, big time, and growing that dense and close in an arctic/aleutian environment is pure nonsense

Frank, I suspect that the "following an ocean highway" means that said humans were boating their way across the kelp highway, and surviving off of an unusually dense ecosystem - you know, all the critters that would be feeding off of the blooms.

Most of those facing eviction are said to be war veterans who took part in Zimbabwe's independence struggle in the 1970s and subsequently served as shock troops for the government-led land invasions that displaced thousands of white farmers.
Occupancy of such farms in Masvingo is being challenged by senior officials, sources said. Land reform has left many farms in the hands of top government officials. Sources close to the situation said officials pressing ahead with the evictions include Higher Education Minister Stan Mudenge, Masvingo Provincial Governor Willard Chiwewe and traditional chief Fortune Charumbira.

A three hour gun battle ensued between the war veterans, some of whom were armed with automatic weapons, and Olds. Olds was wounded in the shoulder, chest and legs. According to one report the stand-off ended when squatters threw molotov cocktails into the house. Olds' home started to burn and when the heat became too intense inside he stumbled out into the hands of the veterans. They beat him severely with iron bars and then shot him twice in the face at close range. When the police found Olds body it was riddled with bullets. He had bullet wounds in the face and both legs. His head had been severely battered with blunt objects. According to homicide officers of the CID who collected his body three hours after his death, the veterans had riddled Olds with bullets and then finished him off with iron bars and other weapons such as axes.. "They killed my son," said Gloria Olds, Martin's mother. "They beat him to a pulp."

Brazzaville - A court at Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo sentenced two human rights activists Wednesday to a suspended prison term of one year and fined them $601 each for fraud. Christian Mounzeo, president of the Rally for Peace and Human Rights (RPDH) and Brice Mackosso, executive secretary of the Roman Catholic Church's Justice and Peace Commission in Congo, were convicted of fraud, using forged documents and abuse of trust, said their lawyer Laurent Ngombi.
The two men were arrested and jailed for three weeks in April on a charge of embezzling funds at RPDH, which they have both denied, in a case that has roused heated debate in the central African country. Their supporters say their trial was really motivated by politics. Many non-governmental organisations and some political parties hold that Mounzeo and Mackosso were detained because of their leading role in a coalition called Publish What You Pay, which has targeted the Brazzaville government for a lack of transparency regarding the management of Congo's oil industry and oil income.

The combat broke out before dawn around villages north of the city of Goma, capital of Congo's North Kivu province, said Lieutenant Colonel Didier Rancher, spokesperson for the UN force in the central African country. Up to 2,000 Britons a year are applying to join the Australian Army rather than the British Armed Forces because they get a more attractive lifestyle as well as better pay and conditions. Figures supplied by the Australian Army show that it receives as many as 1,800 applicants from the UK every year, of which 200 are recruited.
Col Tim Collins, a former commanding officer of the Royal Irish Regiment who fought in the 2003 Iraq war, said that there had been a tradition of Australians joining the British Army, often because they would not have been able to get operational experience if they joined their own army. But he added that the "tide had turned", and the Australian Army had become an increasingly attractive proposition, mainly because of the conditions and the open-air lifestyle that Australia could offer.
In addition, recruits could also now expect to see active service overseas because Australian troops were being deployed in conflict zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Col Collins added: "In the British Army, the leadership is poor and continues to be poor. There has been a selfishness at the top, while jealous civil servants have eroded the conditions of troops serving in the Army.
"Payment for being away from home for long periods has become intolerable. The Ministry of Defence, famously, could not give a toss about servicemen."

That's like saying a Toyota can be bought for $20,000. Which Toyota model? Chery's low-end Chinese model is the QQ. In China, the cost is about $5,000, at current exchange rates. It's being exported to Malaysia, but with a bigger (over 1000cc) engine than its Chinese equivalent, which is sub-1000cc. Any US model would have a bigger engine still, than the Malaysian model. I'm thinking in the region of 1500cc (1.5L). We're probably looking at a $10,000 American QQ, after engine size and safety-related changes are factored in. It might have a future here - the JD Power survey (in China) gave the QQ a better rating than the GM model it was copied from (although this might just be Chinese nationalism at work - on the part of the survey respondents).

Spanish Muslims said on Wednesday that they have appealed to Pope Benedict XVI to be allowed to pray in the Cathedral of Cordoba in southern Spain, which was once an ancient mosque. I suppose. As long as Christians are free to pray in Muslim mosques.
In a letter to the pope, Spain's Islamic Board said senior Spanish Catholic clergy had rejected requests for Muslims to be allowed to pray inside the Cathedral, which was converted into a church in the 13th century. They stressed that Muslims want the mosque to turn into an ecumenical temple, where Christians, Muslims and believers from other faiths might all be worshipping the same God. "Just like in Arabia!"
They wrote a similar letter to Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero earlier this year.

I'm sure they will be every bit as "ecumenical" as their co-religionists are over on Jerusalem's Temple Mount, with their undisputed civility and kindness towards their fellow worshipers of the Jewish persuasion over by the Wailing Wall.
Besides, they are perfectly free to pray in the Cathedral right now. There's just a few house rules they have to obey.
1) No shouting "allahu snackbar" or "death to the Jews!" during the homily.
2) No yelling at the women that they gotta get to the back of the Cathedral, and that they have to put on a burqa while they are at it.
3) We have images of saints, sinners, and other assorted humans on the walls and in the stained glass. Some of them are in various states of undress. Deal with it.
4) Keep your shoes on, and get up off of the rug. We just vacuumed the damn thing! There are pews with kneelers available for your use.
5) Don't interrupt the Apostle's Creed to ask where Mecca is. We don't know. (Some of us are still drunk/hungover from the night before and barely know where home is.)

Strictly speaking, the church is a very, very small part of the Great Mosque. The mosque is huge, as big as a city block, and just a forest of pillars, inside. The church is just sort of shoehorned into one quadrant of it... frankly, they could pray in almost any part of it and not even be noticed in the church!
Yeah, but I think Zappy should ask a couple of pointed questions about Christians praying in Saudi Arabia, anyway.

Sen. Tim Johnson turned 60 on Thursday, two weeks after emergency surgery to repair a brain hemorrhage that has left him in critical condition.
Julianne Fisher, a spokeswoman for the South Dakota Democrat, said Johnson won't be present in the first days of the new Congress next week but is continuing to improve. She said he is responsive to directions from his wife but has not yet spoken.
It's too early to tell how long recovery will take, Fisher said. how long will the citizens of South Dakota be without full representation, Julianne?
In a statement Thursday, Johnson's doctors said he remains in intensive care at George Washington University Hospital. They have released few new details about Johnson's condition and prognosis since the days after the Dec. 13 surgery to stop bleeding in his brain.
Dr. Vivek Deshmukh, head of Johnson's surgical team, said in a statement that the South Dakota senator's overall condition has improved and he is gradually being weaned off sedation to help his brain heal.
The statement said Johnson is expected to undergo more tests in coming days.
Johnson's wife, Barbara, said her husband "continues to give us great hope" and that two of the couple's three grown children were at the hospital to be with him on his birthday.
"While we were both looking forward to celebrating his 60th birthday with our family and friends, I know the celebration is just postponed," she said.
Johnson was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation, a condition, often present from birth, that causes arteries and veins to grow abnormally large, become tangled and sometimes burst. He was rushed to the hospital after becoming disoriented on a call with reporters and had surgery hours later.

Happened to me once. Only my dress was black and hers was dark blue, she was taller, I more muscular (retired swimmers just don't look like retired gymnasts!) and I had higher heeled shoes. We both looked better, to tell the truth, and had great fun wandering about together seeing who preferred which. Of course, we weren't wearing $8500 dresses which were promised to be exclusive...

I tend to think of cash as anonymous, but I heard recently that use of individual notes is tracked, presumably they go through a scanning process when they go through a financial institution. Apparently, its a very useful tool in tackling international crime.
As the article suggests, the Euros popularity as cash may result from its popularity with criminals.
Fast growth in the highest denomination notes, especially the 500 note, has raised suspicions that they are popular among criminals, although the ECB plays down this factor.
I've never lived there, but it's my understanding that financial transactions are much more automated (electronic) than in the U. S. Thus there was no domestic need for a 500 note. The exclusive purpose of this was to gain an $800 billion interest free loan from drug runners.
Somebody should tell Kimmie to stop printing chump change.

Run a comparison of public spending and debt and deficit spending by the governments against the GDP.
Crooks like Kimmie are going to find it easier to deal banks Euros than the dollar cause the owning governments are far less able/willing to hammer with effectiveness the banks money launderers.

The article ignores the fact that circulating cash is a small part of the money in circulation. By far and away the largest part is demand accounts: checking, bearer bonds, etc. The oil companies don't lug around suitcases of dollars or Euros to pay for a shipload of oil, it's all bearer bonds (and all electronic these days). And so far, the biggest chunk of all that is in dollars.
