NN2N1,
Last I heard - which was apparently just before this happened - the word was that Marinette was likely to be stuck in Cleveland until spring. Now the word from home is that the community was going to be looking out for the crew; and I'd expect nothing less from my hometown.
The issue, though may have been that the USN was planning on making the entire crew stay there until she could get clear - no leave, definitely no home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Apparently the idea of rotating a skeleton crew was shot down, and nothing else was going to be allowed. Can't help but wonder if CDR Volkle may not have already been in a bad place for some reason, and being effectively confined to the ship for the next 5-6 months wasn't the last straw.

Well, he was a deck officer on the Fitzgerald and the McCain (both had collisions when he had moved on) and been given command of an LCS, and all of them are destined for the scrapyard.
Not a pleasant career trajectory, even if none of it was your fault.

I'm sorry to hear that, but I thought it was because he gave up trying to figure out which pronouns to use and when to use them...
[LawEnforcementToday] "Ever since an unhinged "trans" female opened fire at a Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee, last April, ...people have wondered why the so-called "manifesto" of the shooter was being hidden from public view.
We know the Transgender shooter, left behind the manifesto, yet for unknown reasons at the time, the Nashville Police Department refused to share it with the public."
Last week we finally saw "part" of the manifesto and it was clear it the Transgender Mentally Ill shooter, was Anti-White & Anti-Religion. So now we understand the likely greater reason, is likely WOKE, that the Nashville Police Chief John Drake refused the release and why he was supported the powers that be higher up.

Maybe Bill is trying to buy Earth, like that guy in The Man Who Sold The Moon but bigger. If so, we will have to wait for Earth 3.1 before things kinda sorta work again.

Yes, it happens all the time in Los Angeles and San Diego as well...under freeways or in river valleys and canyons. These fires may not always be associated with homeless encampments but they usually are. Most of the time they're like the fire in this video, small and quickly extinguished. Most of the time they don't even make the news. It's just another day in paradise.
And I like palm trees. I really do. But when they grow that close to a freeway or any other structure and their dry fronds have never been trimmed, they provide great fuel for fires and great habitat for rats.

In San Diego we've had several deaths from trimmers on Washingtonia (Mexican) Fan Palms: heavy frond skirts, rats and possoms as noted, but the trimmers get smothered by the skirts when doing it wrong

[AFRICANEWS] Nigerian President Bola Tinubu's approval of a supplementary budget earmarking millions of dollars for a presidential yacht and sport utility vehicles for his wife and top government officials has again stoked anger among ordinary Nigerians over what they see as a growing economic disparity.
Tinubu on Wednesday signed into law the budget that allocates $38 million for the presidential air fleet and other renovations. With the senate's approval, politicians assigned some $6.1 million budgeted earlier for the yacht to "student loans" — with the senate's approval.
The country's navy said it had taken delivery of the yacht, but "it has not been paid for."
Presidential spokesperson Anjuri Ngelale defended the supplemental budget as serving to "strengthen Nigeria's security architecture and address Nigeria's critical infrastructure deficit, amongst other considerations."
The spokesperson said about 30% of the money would be spent on security, and another 35% on "provision of critical infrastructure."
Recently, the country's 460-member national assembly confirmed that all politicians will reportedly get a new SUV at a cost of more than $150,000 each. The politicians said the vehicles would help them do their work better.
Nigeria, one of the world's poorest countries, is seeing food prices continue to soar to record highs. Also soaring is the frustration of ordinary Nigerians who see politicians earn huge salaries while others like medical professionals often have to go on strike to protest meagre wages.
"It is by the grace of God that I can eat. It is hard," said Nduka Omeje, a trader in Apo resettlement in Nigeria's capital city, Abuja.
Labour unions struggled to get the government to raise the minimum wage for civil servants from a monthly $67 a month. The 2019 pay increase came after workers staged protests.

[AFRICANEWS] An opposition activist in Zim-bob-we has been found dead after being kidnapped while campaigning ahead of by-elections, his party announced on Monday.
This is the third incident in recent weeks denounced by the Citizens' Coalition for Change (CCC), the country's largest opposition group, which accuses the ruling Zanu-PF party of conducting a vast campaign of intimidation against its supporters.
At the end of October and beginning of November, the CCC announced that one of its MPs and a former MP had been kidnapped in Harare, tortured and then found naked and maimed in the case of the former, and with his head shaved in the case of the latter.
The CCC said on Monday that the body of Tapfumanei Masaya, kidnapped in broad daylight by gunnies last Saturday in Harare, had been found on the outskirts of the capital.
"We call on the police to investigate this heinous crime and bring the perpetrators to justice", the party said on X (formerly Twitter).
The police confirmed that a body had been found without confirming its identity, which they said had yet to be established.
Contested elections in August returned President Emmerson Mnangagwa to power.
Parliament has since declared vacant the seats of 15 elected CCC MPs, who denounced the decision as "fraudulent", and by-elections are scheduled for December to fill them.
Tapfumanei Masaya was campaigning for a CCC candidate in Mabvuku, a suburb of Harare, when he was forced into a vehicle, according to his party.
The "illegal" and "fraudulent" cancellation of the elections for our MPs "led to (his) death", the CCC wrote on social networks. In August, CCC leader Nelson Chamisa, 45, was defeated by President Mnangagwa, 81, in general elections that also gave Zanu-PF a majority in parliament.
According to international observers, these elections failed to meet democratic standards. The forthcoming by-elections could hand Zanu-PF, which has been in power since independence in 1980, a two-thirds majority in parliament, which is needed to amend the Constitution.
According to some analysts, Zanu-PF could take advantage of this to allow Mr Mnangagwa, who came to power after a coup that overthrew President Bob Muggsy Mugabe Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case. [ZERO] In October, the secondary market for pre-owned Rolex and Patek Philippe watches reached its lowest point in two years, primarily due to high interest rates crushing demand and increasing supply returning to the market. The combination of the two is accelerating the bust cycle in the luxury watch market.
The Bloomberg Subdial Watch Index, which tracks prices for the 50 most-traded watches by value on the secondary market, fell 1.8% in October, stumbling to its lowest level since 2021.
Subdial data shows a Patek Philippe Nautilus Travel Time 5990/1A-001 has crashed 42.5% since peaking at $271,000 in March 2022.
"We are seeing growing downward pressure in the market, which could lead to a further downward drift in prices as dealers cut valuations to chase sales," Christy Davis, the co-founder of Subdial, wrote in an October market report.
According to Subdial data, the number of used watches hitting the secondary market has increased 5% since August. More supply is adding downward pressure on an already fragile market.
"With more watches available at a wider spread of prices, what we're seeing is people dropping prices to chase sales going into the holiday season," Davis said.

...FWIW, one of our oldest and most consistent customers is an outfit that makes boat trailers. For us, they're the canary in the coal mine, because if people are still buying boat trailers that means they can still afford boats, so there's money out there.

Our local grocer watches what he calls 'The Snack Food Index'. (He owns a chain of some pretty sizable stores. Business all started by his dad in a storefront 80+ years ago.)
When folks start buying more snack foods, the economy is usually worsening. He figures that folks start staying home more and this 'index' has proven itself out over the last 30 or so years. The increase in liquor sales usually follows by a month or so.
I talked to him a couple weeks ago and "Snack Foods have been on the rise for the last 5-6 months."

[HotAir] There are a few more things roiling the waters as far a the oceanic shipping industry is concerned that I thought were kind of interesting.
I’ve already covered the continuing Panama Canal issue, but that low water and reduced traffic is causing it’s own corollary inflationary issues. While the traffic snafu continues unabated…
…and the reduction in the number of ships being allowed to make the transit heads towards 18 by the end of February, some operators are taking extraordinary measures to ensure their cargo gets across the isthmus.
They are ponying up the cash, and not just the extra required to make the day’s cut – they’re buying a license to jump the line entirely. Liquid natural gas carriers are in a time crunch, and I had never before known they needed to be.
It turns out, if they sit around too long, their cargo boils off.
It’s really interesting. Before LNG became the fuel of choice, vessels would actually use the naturally occurring “boil off” – which has to, to relieve pressure – to partially fuel the ship itself.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers are burning more dirty fuel oil than normal after the price of their super-chilled cargo soared above that of oil, trade and shipping sources said.
LNG tankers often use some of their cargo, stored in liquid form at minus 163 degrees Celsius, for power, as a small portion tends to evaporate or “boil off” during transit and needs to be removed from the tanks anyway to avoid a build up of pressure.
Older LNG tankers run on steam turbines that burn a combination of fuel oil and boil-off gas, while vessels built after 2014 have more efficient dual or tri-fuel diesel engines that burn a mixture of marine gasoil and boil-off gas.
When gas prices were lower, operators chose to boil off more of their cargoes over using fuel oil to power the ships.
But the price of LNG is so high that they are trying to avoid using more than necessary of the stored gas and are instead relying on cheaper fuel oil, the sources told Reuters.
The boil-off rate with a vessel sitting in the warm tropical sun waiting to cross through the Canal is, I guess, significant enough that it’s worth paying literally millions to get that boat floating along.
At the prices LNG is going for and with demand as high as it is, the operators can afford to pay the additional passage fee, but that is a crippling amount of money for your average shipper.
…“You are getting close to $4.5 million to use the canal, so that is pricing out a lot of ships,” Oystein Kalleklev, chief executive officer of Flex LNG Ltd. and Avance Gas Holding Ltd., said during a conference call Wednesday when asked about the state of the canal.
What does that do to the LNG price on the backside? I’m not sure how those markets are traded and where the shipping is added to the cost. Things have been so unstable, I know now in a lot of industries there aren’t locked in contracts with shipping included. Now you either pay it yourself, or eat the freight the wholesaler hits you for when he ships. However they dock you for it, the costs are hitting the consumer’s bottom line in the end.
Finally, thanks to the appearance of a tropical storm that formed over Panama, Gatun Lake is projected to fill a bit – providing a little breathing room – but the long term outlook is still dreary. Again, because of that forecasted robust El Niño that is also set to bedevil refilling our Mississippi River.

Part of the 'unexpected' problem that they're having at the Panama Canal is the new locks are bigger, longer, wider, and use eight times as much water as the older locks (that are still in use) with every cycle. Plus they're having a drought, and they didn't widen the Galliard Cut (the narrowest part) all that much.
So, they're using more water, and not getting as much as they need.

When it comes to his friendship with former President Donald Trump, UFC head-honcho Dana White treats it almost like a badge of honor. In fact, he’s so serious about it, he has no interest in putting "big sponsors" and whatever they want above it.
While speaking to Theo Von on his podcast, "This Past Weekend," White said a big sponsor of the UFC demanded he take down a post on social media that featured the Trumpster himself. Yeah ... White wasn’t playin’ that, telling the sponsor, "Go f*ck yourself."
"One of our big sponsors called and said, ’Take that down,'" White told Von. "I said, ’Go fuck yourself.’ You vote for whoever you want to vote for, and I’ll vote for whoever I want to vote for. That’s how this works. I don’t even care who you’re voting for. It’s none of my fucking business. Fuck you."

[Breitbart] LEESBURG, VA — Voters in Loudoun County, Virginia, ousted Soros prosecutor Buta Biberaj, replacing her with Republican Bob Anderson as county attorney of the closely watched county.
George Soros has wreaked havoc nationwide by funneling enormous sums of his vast wealth into lower-profile public offices with an outsized impact on the direction of the nation. Almost 20 years ago he started his SOS Project, focusing on electing leftwing secretaries of state because they are chief elections officers of their respective states, resulting in major reinterpretations of elections laws. This accelerated a leftward shift in voting laws that would result in pushing ballot harvesting, automatic voter registration, same-day registration, forbidding voter ID and blocking other election integrity measures.
In the past few years, his network has shifted to county prosecutors, resulting in repeated outrages in leftwing enclaves like New York City (Alvin Bragg) and Los Angeles (George Gascon). They have also been a major focus in the Virginia counties surrounding Washington DC, like Arlington (Parisa Dehghanti-Tafti) and Fairfax (Steve Descano).
But all those jurisdictions are solidly blue. Just past Fairfax to the north and west is Loudoun County. More than a decade ago it was ruby red (as was Fairfax not many years prior to that), but now it is clearly purple — and gets outsized media attention, as it appears to be both a microcosm of the fight for Virginia but also a flashpoint for battling over parental rights and schools, especially on issues like Critical Race Theory and transgender issues involving sports and student safety.

Misleading headline. One of the problems with the first test was it was too hard to get the rocket to explode. When it was obviously going nowhere due to engine failures, the destruct system was triggered, but it just punched holes in the structure. The rocket kept pinwheeling around for a while before suffering a structural failure and then it partially exploded. The FAA required the destruct system to be beefed up (more kaboom!) before the upcoming test.
