LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two Egyptian nationals who pleaded guilty to enslaving a 10-year-old Egyptian girl at their Southern California home, making her work long hours serving their family of seven, were sentenced on Monday to prison terms. Perhaps their new roommates will teach them a thing or two about "enslavment".
Abdel Nasser Youssef Ibrahim, 57, was sentenced to three years in federal prison and his former wife, Amal Ahmed Ewisabd Motelib, 43, was given 22 months behind bars by a federal judge. Prosecutors said the pair will be deported after serving their sentences.
U.S. District Judge James Selna also ordered the defendants to pay their victim more than $76,000 in restitution, which represents the money the girl should have been paid during the two years she worked for their family.
"The young victim in this case was subject to inhumane conditions that included both physical and verbal abuse," U.S. Attorney Debra Yang said in a written statement.
"As a result of recent changes in federal law she has been granted a visa that will allow her to stay and hopefully prosper in the United States," Yang said.
In pleading guilty in June the defendants admitted bringing the girl to the United States from Egypt in 2000 when she was 10 under an arrangement with her parents, confiscating her passport and forcing her to work 16 hours a day as a domestic servant.
The girl was required to assist the couple's youngest children in getting ready for school, to prepare and serve food, clean the home, do laundry and work in the yard, according to court papers.
She was not allowed to attend school and was told she would be arrested if she was spotted alone outside their home. The couple each admitted to slapping the girl at least once to get her to work, the court papers said. Authorities did not say how her plight came to light.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A man freed from jail in Belgium last Friday allegedly committed eight robberies before being arrested the next day, the national Belga news agency reported.
The unidentified man was carrying stolen jewels when he was arrested in Jambes, on the outskirts of the southeastern city of Namur, the agency reported Sunday. The agency gave no other details on the arrest or what he was imprisoned for earlier.
Police confirmed an arrest.

here in Santee we have the San Diego County women's jail. A woman was released last week, given a bus token. She promptly went to the 7-11 down the street, and stole goods, running out the door - all the way to the bus stop a block away where she was arrested a short time later....waiting for that bus. Grew up with a guy who went to prison for arson. First thing he did once his sentence was up was rob a bank, then walked accross the street to the police station and turned himself in.
The father of a young football player pulled a gun on his son's coach because he didn't think the boy was getting enough playing time, Philadelphia police said on Monday. Wayne Derkotch, 40, was charged with aggravated assault after getting in a fight with the coach over the amount of time the boy was getting on the field at a game for 6- and 7-year-olds on Sunday morning, said police spokesman Officer Raul Malveiro. "There was a physical altercation about what child should play or not play and then he pulled the gun," Malveiro said. There were no injuries and Derkotch fled before being arrested after a complaint was made by the coach, whose name was not released, Malveiro said.

I didn't see the end of that encounter but I sincerely hope the cop beat both his head and his ass bloody. I'm ready to see the right start physically beating these leftists into jello. NEW MILFORD, Conn. - Investigators were trying to determine who tossed a beer keg into a burning barrel at a party, causing a deadly explosion that sent metal shards slicing through a crowd of people. The explosion early Sunday killed Sean M. Caselli, 22, of New Milford. Seven other people were taken to hospitals with burns and shrapnel wounds, police said. Caselli was struck in the neck by a piece of flying metal. Sgt. Lee Grabner said investigators interviewed witnesses Sunday to try to identify the person witnesses say threw a quarter-keg of beer into the flames, and to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.

This really sucks. Usually, only the clown who says, "Here, hold my beer." pays for his stupidity. In this case, not hauling ass when someone tosses a keg into a fire, especially one within a confined space ideal for creating schrapnel, added numerous low-hangin' victims to the grief. I won't mention they obviously had insufficient IQ stores to handle the 20-40 points lost by drinking. That would be mean.

Proposition 87 would tax oil companies for oil they take from California, raising about $4 billion for use in developing alternative energy sources with a goal of reducing the state's dependence on gas and diesel by 25 percent within 10 years.
It's backed by environmental, health and other groups who say it will reduce foreign-oil dependence while nurturing cleaner energy and mitigating global warming. California is the only oil-producing state without such a drilling tax, they note, but the measure's foes -- funded mostly by San Ramon-based Chevron and other oil companies -- say the state already puts property, sales and other taxes on oil.
No on 87 campaign spokesman Nick DeLuca attended Gore's speech and later Monday said it underscored the ``split between the big picture and the actual initiative.'' Oil companies, business groups and other opponents of the measure agree on reducing foreign-oil dependence and stopping global warming, he said, but the measure poses problems: a tax that would decrease domestic production and increase foreign-oil imports, and a new bureaucracy exempt from competitive bidding and some conflict-of-interest rules.
Oil companies, which face the loss of profits from hundreds of California oil wells, had ponied up $73 million through last Friday to attack Proposition 87 with an advertising barrage that argues that the tax would increase fuel prices.
Chevron, the state's largest oil producer, had kicked in $30 million. Supporters of Proposition 87 said Chevron wrote an additional $5 million check on Monday. The company did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
Proposition 87's supporters have stayed in the fight, largely on the strength of an unprecedented $40 million contribution from a Hollywood producer and real estate heir Stephen Bing. Gore acknowledged Bing's presence at Monday's rally, but he did not speak he's running in '08....I love it

A $10 a gallon tax on motor fuels in CA will really work wonders on decreasing the state's use of such evil substances, not to mention cutting its unrealistic real estate values. People would leave the state so fast, the earth's crust there would rebound.

About 64 per cent of Indians are now meat eaters as compared to just 46 per cent in early 1990s. And, this phenomenon is not restricted to big cities but has spread to smaller towns, the nationwide survey conducted by National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad, has found.
The Chief Investigator of the study Dr Kalpagam Polasa of NIN told Hindustan Times that majority of Indians (about 64 per cent) prefer non-vegetarian food. Except north Indian where only 40.4 per cent people eat non-veg food, in other regions the majority are meat eaters. The percentage is over 90 per cent in the southern region, she said.
The maximum increase has been witnessed in the southern India especially in smaller towns of Tamil Nadu. Meat eating is as high as 98 per cent in some parts of Tamil Nadu, she said. Second to south is the western region but it has lowest hygiene awareness except in Gujarat.
Not only the number even periodicity appears to have increased. While most non-vegetarians prefer eating meat twice a week, the periodicity is as high as four to six days a week for some in coastal belt of southern India. It is most common in areas where fish is easily available and is cheaper than the vegetarian food.
The survey conducted over a period of two years in collaboration with AIIMS, Irwin Medical College and Tata Institute of Social Sciences has found that in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkatta majority of families prefer eating out, mainly on weekends.
Polasa said the trend is increasing at a healthy rate while admitting that it can be due to increase in per capita income in cities. Delhi, for instance, has seen per capital income rising from Rs 18,000 in 1993-94 to 24,450, double the national average. Similar jumps have been witnessed in per capita income of cities like Mumbai, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Indore, Pune, Ahmedabad and Kolkatta, according to latest NSSO report.
The information was generated through questionnaire to mothers in 21,000 households of the 82 districts in 28 states. We targeted mothers as they are chief guardian of food and their knowledge of food safety determines health of a family, Polasa explained. Like most mothers, the National Food Safety study found that Indian mothers prefer cooking fresh meal twice a day, an indication towards their sincerity towards their familys health.
However, on the good health practices rating Gujarat earned the top slot, courtesy the good food safety knowledge of the mothers. The knowledge didnt appear to have percolated in the neighboring Maharashtra, which recorded highest rate of illiteracy (25 per cent) regarding save food practices. In the region wise comparison, food safety awareness was high in the northeastern states as compared to north and southern India.
Irrespective of food quality awareness or not, there appears to be national unanimity that cause of most water borne diseases is bad quality of tap water. Some practices of water filtration noted during study were not found to be safe, she said, while referring to usage of cloth for water filtration.
The study looks into many nutritional aspects with an idea to develop a knowledge base on food safety, institutes director Dr B Sesikeran, noted. For the first time data base on Indians eating habits, food safety practices and consumer habits have been recorded in the three volume report, he said. And, the information will now be used to develop region wise awareness material. We will conduct another survey in few years to analyse its impact, Polasa said.

This points to a future of industrial fish farms.
Probably ships that look like long barges, that go out to where there is an off-coastal current, then anchor, descend nets and raise fish in them. The current takes care of aeration and waste elimination, and the fish gain slightly *more* weight than the feed given them, with natural food again provided by the current.
When the fish are mature, they just reel the nets up, and transport the live fish within the barge to the processing plant. They can do the same if a major storm threatens them.
It is cheaper than using on-land fish farming, and the biggest problem is not technical, it is piracy. A fleet of such ships could work year 'round and provide enough fish for a country.

Researchers also found sexual orientation often determines how the brain reacts to erotic images. Heterosexual women, for example, were more tuned in to pictures of naked men, the same reaction exhibited by homosexual men. But homosexual woman were equally attuned to naked images of both sexes, the report said.
