Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says illegal immigrants do essential work in the U.S. and he has firsthand knowledge of that because they fix his house. If a 30 year old spoiled brat socialite can dodge felony cocaine possession with just a misdemeanor, the good general can dodge this...
In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," he said a path to legal status should be offered to illegal immigrants in the U.S. because they "are doing things we need done in this country."
He added: "They're all over my house, doing things whenever I call for repairs, and I'm sure you've seen them at your house. We've got to find a way to bring these people out of the darkness and give them some kind of status."
Powell did not say whether he's hired illegal immigrants directly or they showed up with contractors.
The fucking son of a bitch. Honour is one of the things he swore to, when he accepted his commission. This is not honourable. Or am I overreacting, knowing how many illegals are trapped in slavery?
#2
It's quite clear that hiring illegals is not illegal in this country. That went out with Zoe Baird. (That darned old year of 1993 again).
Quote from Powell from Politico:
America is going to be a minority nation in one more generation, Powell said. Our minorities are not getting educated well enough now. Fifty percent of our minority kids are not finishing high school. Weve got to invest in education. We should use the DREAM Act as one way to do it. Whether it should be part of the defense bill or not is something the Congress will decide.
Well, obviously the answer is MORE immigrants that don't finish high school. I'm really despising our "elite" these days. I think Western civilization has no future. They've sold out to the global billionaires who could care less about it.

Living up to the prounounciation of his name COLON when most men named Colin pronounce their name the proper Irish way like "Cah-lin." What a criminal deadbeat.

IIRC, it was Powell who urged Bush I to end the first Gulf War at the 100 hour mark. He was getting squishy because the MSM was babbling about the 'road of death' and 'piling it on' to the retreating Iraqi forces. All of which was small in comparison to what the Allied forces did at Falaise Pocket in Normandy in '44 to the Germans. Just like the forces that weren't destroyed then that turned up later to inflict casualties among Allied forces months later, the Allies of the Iraqi Liberation would face those not destroyed years later. Meanwhile for over a decade the civilian population would suffer under the rule of those who should have been overthrown then and there. He long ago exceeded his Peter Principle level.

I'll grant that illegals do essential work in the US. But why is that so? Is it because legals and citizens can't? No, I did lawn and garden (and even roof) work when I was in jr. high. It's because they won't. And why won't they? Because it doesn't pay well enough and the alternatives do not leave them hungry enough. And because fear of lawsuits has blocked kids from being hired (not much fear of lawsuit from an injured illegal when compared with an injured Coddington Farnsworth IV.)
#12
I lost a lot of respect for this guy & stopped paying attention to what he was saying after he threw in his lot w/wonder boy and tried pulling strings for his son w/the obama admin...this new development does not surprise me.
#15
Which highlights a serious, and largely ignored, social problem, low skilled immigrants undercut the wages of low skilled residents/citizens and drive large numbers into unemployment and poverty, not to mention crime.
#18
Illegal aliens helped to build my house. I know they did because when I was pulling tiles from the roof to look for a leak I found a Tijuana newspaper. I also found some of the sloppiest, shoddiest workmanship you could ever see. The developer had no pride and neither did the people he hired.
But, OTOH, you wouldn't want the general to get his own hands dirty working on his own house, would you?
#20
I sent an email to the White House today, with an impassioned plea to deport illegals and close the border. On the form, I selected to receive a response from the WH and their "most transparent ever" administration. * Crickets* If I do receive one, it will be priceless to hear the canned talking points. I plan on hanging it on my fridge as a reminder to work against the corruption in our government.
Yes. I am quite displeased, ExtremeModerate, and chose language that I thought most efficiently displayed the depth of my displeasure. I try to reserve strong language for really strong feeling, which is why I object to it being wasted as filler in everyday conversation.
#23
C'mon folks...How can we expect a General, Sec of State, author and touring speaker to afford more than $1.50/hour to have his house fixed up? After all, it is up to us rich guys to pay the going rate. (sarc/off)

Normally, TW uses a scalpel with a flair that would make many surgeons envious. But it seems Colin Powell has wandered far enough out into the weeds that she feels a baseball bat is more appropriate. Poor old guy is rapidly approaching jimmuh carter status.
#25
I don't understand the "pi$$ed-off alert" color system. Periwinkle indicates a moderator comment? It seems this is TW's comment. TW you are always usually so unruffled. There are times when strong language serves a useful purpose in communication--there is very little misunderstanding about it. Somehow, I have even more respect for you. We don't have much honesty in the usual public forums. It is refreshing.
#26
Periwinkle is my colour when I'm moderating, JohnQC. Mostly it's for in-lines, to differentiate my in-line comments from the person who submitted the article, which are highlighted in bright yellow. But also if I say something in the comment thread as a moderator,
when it would look like this.
There's a list in the right column of the front page called Meet the Mods; In no particular order... that lists who is what colour. It has nothing specifically to do with me being annoyed, as such.
#28

Well...it certainly raised my eyebrows. I said to myself, self: "TW is some kinda pissed!". I did, that's what I said! ;-)

Gen Powell says there should be a path to citizenship for illegals.
There is:
1) Move back to Mexico
2) Apply for a visa
3) Wait for years (or decades) to have it approved
4) Move back to the US legally
5) Wait the required number of years (5, I think)
6) Pass the standard citizenship test
7) Take the oath.
You notice that this takes many years. Too bad. Anyone who came here legally had to go through the same sort of process. Just because people are from Mexico, and came across the border illegally does not give them any special rights. They do not have the right to jump to the head of the line just because they have managed to escape deportation for years.

One can only hope the ex-general also is starting to show the signs of senility, Ebbang Uluque6305. Otherwise such deliberate breaking the laws of the nation he is still sworn to serve... as you say (and thank you for the very graceful compliment!), a verbal scalpel simply would not serve.
I did, that's what I said! ;-)
Thank you for that note of levity, dear Secret Asian Man, so much needed after the shock of this article. I expect honour from all our men and women in uniform, you see, and have rarely been disappointed. I expect even more from senior officers, who answer not only for their own actions but also for the example they set for those who look to them for leadership; a man like ex-general Powell held in his hands not only his own honour, but the lives and honour of those who reported to him, all the way down to the lowliest private lining up to start basic training. This behaviour creates distrust, driping poison into the bloodstream of our military.
Perhaps I should have used different words -- by all accounts ex-general Powell's mother was the kind of lady we all can aspire to being, but I lack the proper vocabulary.

Um no. You sentiments were echoed throughout America today. By the way, the cheap Bastige backtracked somewhat. Grrrr. So you can include liar as well to his list of accomplishments.
Today:
I dont hire illegal immigrants, he said in the clarifying statement. On Meet the Press yesterday, I referred to illegal immigrants working around my house. I was referring to the many service contractors who work in my neighborhood, using mostly immigrant workers, who do good work. Some may well be illegal.
The original comment sounded like he assumed that non-native service workers were indeed illegal, and that he approved. The clarifying statement merely adds that he did not directly hire illegals, but that he felt no need to confirm his assumption that those funny-speaking men wandering through his house probably didn't have legitimate green cards. It's odd, because I suspect the ex-general's parents came legally from Jamaica.
Yep, General Powell is of Jamaican and Scottish ancestry and grew up in Harlem. In his (auto)biography he certainly chocked several chapters on his humble upbringing, lest you forget, dear reader, that he is not from privilege. Unfortunately, I admit I've read this book cover to cover, which makes his deriliction even more disapointing. Lamer still is that he's gone soft, he should know better than to aid and abet lower wages that illegals are paid.
#35
Powell would never hire an illegal worker, no, how could you ever think that. He has contractors to handle those details and provide plausible deniability, as usual for men in his position.
Illegals aren't legally illegal, anyway. Nothing will get done in this country unless we make them illegally legal. But they have to have legal SS numbers so we can pay them their retirement. Well, hm, so they can pay me my retirement. Hey, what's wrong with illegals?
Im one of your middle-class Americans, and quite frankly Im exhausted. Im exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the mantle of change that I voted for, and deeply disappointed with where we are right now. I had been told that I voted for a man who said he was going to change things in a meaningful way for the middle class. Im one of those people and Im waiting, sir. Im waiting. I dont feel it yet, and I thought that while it wouldnt be in great measure I would feel it in some small measure.

I hope the silly wonk loses every dime her affirmative action, Federal gov't do nothing job has paid her and she ends up putting her offspring into public schools. Maybe next time she votes she'll take time to use some common sense rather than euphoric race based, tribal emotion.
The UK's tax collection agency is putting forth a proposal that all employers send employee paychecks to the government, after which the government would deduct what it deems as the appropriate tax and pay the employees by bank transfer.
The proposal by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) stresses the need for employers to provide real-time information to the government so that it can monitor all payments and make a better assessment of whether the correct tax is being paid.
Currently employers withhold tax and pay the government, providing information at the end of the year, a system know as Pay as You Earn (PAYE). There is no option for those employees to refuse withholding and individually file a tax return at the end of the year.
If the real-time information plan works, it further proposes that employers hand over employee salaries to the government first.
"The next step could be to use (real-time) information as the basis for centralizing the calculation and deduction of tax," HMRC said in a July discussion paper.
HMRC described the plan as "radical" as it would be a huge change from the current system that has been largely unchanged for 66 years.
The chance of widespread mistakes could be high. HMRC does not have a good track record of handling large computer systems and has suffered high-profile errors with data.
The system would be massive in terms of data management, larger than a recent attempt to centralize the National Health Service's data, which was later scrapped. "Paging Mr. Fawkes...Paging Mr. Fawkes. Please pick up the white courtesy phone."

Good idea if you're curious about what a real mob with pitchforks, torches and ropes looks like.
But how about we try it the other way around: everyone keeps what they earn until the end of the year; then we all contribute our fair share to those government programs we consider to have done us some good, sort of like a national telethon.
"Next item: we need five million dollars to refurnish Nancy Pelosi's office. Who's first? Come on, folks, plenty of tax collectors are waiting to take your call!"

This is about the worst idea I have ever heard of.

There is November. And if that fails, and the US/CA politicos get ideas, I am already drilling for defenestration. I need pitchfork guys down under the windows. Everyone does their thing. :-)
Mr. Breitbart asks a single question, over and over: what evidence do you have that your sign is true? Only he does it in front of television cameras, and the union thugs shut up and retreat, sheeplike. Watching that man in action is amazing.
#5
In larger cities, unions such as SIU will go to homeless shelters and pay homeless people to hold signs and to say scripted slogans or to picket. If you ask these people what the protest is about, they either give you a blank look or simply say, "I don't know, I am just doing this for a dollar."
#7
Bretbart makes some very good points. The people there had not idea why they were there. When asked for actual evidence of their signs they can't answer.
I'm sure this will be all over the LSM.... any decade now...

This is how the left will fight their side of the civil war. Beating the unwitting cannon fodder into the fight. The political police will herd them into the killing zones. Feel no guilt, because their master won't.
"There's been no witchcraft since. If there was, Karl Rove would be a supporter now." Nice one. But you're still weird. Any chance I can see you in your "naughty sorceress" outfit?

"dabbled in witchcraft" might be having explored Wiccan spirituality, and realizing it didn't work for her. I think people often explore other spiritual paths, people are curious by nature. But she didn't stick with it.
Besides, who the heck cares? What does that have to do with lawmaking?
#3
And for what it is worth, I know a few people who are Wiccan and have even attended a Wiccan wedding (handfasting). It was actually quite a beautiful ceremony. In fact, Wicca is even now recognized by the US military as a religion. It is basically a modern attempt to recreate a Celtic pagan religion that was practiced before the Romans brought Christianity to the region.
It really isn't all that spooky in that it isn't "evil". One of the key tenants is that what you do comes back to you only stronger. If you do harm, then worse harm will fall on you.

because that's the best the Lame Stream Media can produce...just like wonder boy and his basketball or whatever - will she keep her constitutional oaths i.e. uphold & defend the U.S. Const? Will she be a fiscal conservative and cut spending and taxes? That's all I give a shit about and all I've ever cared about when it comes to politicos on both sides of the aisle - the rest is funny to debate but fairly irrelevant.

More leftard whistling past the graveyard. Do NOT let them escape your wrath Lady O'Donnell, a spell upon them, frogs from their pudgy leftest arsses, perhaps a painful, oooozing pox!
#12
Feeble attempts by a jerk (Bill Maher) to palinize O'Donnell. Too back she's not a witch; maybe she could exorcise the Senate. Who gives a rat hind end what she said in 1999 about a date she had with a wierdo who was into witchcraft which occurred in high school. So we have a donk congresscritter from Illinois, Bobby Seale, who: 1. co-founder (self-styled revolutionary) of the Black panthers, 2. was part of the original Chicago 8 who was on trial for inciting a riot among other things, 3. was accused of murder, and 4. introduced legislation to require everyone to have to register the number of guns owned on their 1040 forms. What about Al "count the votes until you get the result you want" Franken? Barney Frank who helped take down the economy. Maxine Waters? Peolosi? Reid? Rangel? O'Donnell looks damned good compared to this rogue's gallery of donks in Congress.

I find this accusation hilarious, because, to Evangelicals, for someone to have *first* gone astray, and *then* found redemption, is the best possible thing. It validates what they do. It's the whole principle behind the idea of being "born again".
Wicked witchcraft.
And although I know it's strictly taboo
when you arouse the need in me
my heart says "yes indeed" in me
Proceed with what you're lead in 'me to!
It's such an ancient pitch
but one I wouldn't switch'
Cause there's no nicer witch than you!

Directly and indirectly O'Donnell has raised over $2 Million in campaign funds. She should use some of that money and travel to all three Delaware counties and personally apologise for appearing on the Bill Maher show 22 time.
#21
I guess the anti-masturbation thing didn't take. My thought on that was given a choce between her and a self-described "bearded Marxist", most people would choose the one who wasn't a wanker.

I don't get that either. Maybe once but 22 times. I don't like the smarmy, smug, smarter- than-everyone else attitude he projects. His show is about nothing. He strikes me as a dumba$$ elitist who is full of it and himself.

Is "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" one of those instructions that no longer apply?
#27
Is "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" one of those instructions that no longer apply?
Correct, Aris. Because in America the secular law of the land has precedence over the law of any particular religion. Abortionists may not be killed by those claiming their religion forbids such behaviour, either... nor cartoonists like the "Draw Mohammed Day" woman. Those who kill anyway will be tried in a court of law for first degree murder, and generally sentenced to life in prison without parole.
#30
Trailing wife, I'm aware about America's secular law - but same way that Christians may feel morally/religiously obliged to vote for lawmakers that will push for the abolition of abortion, do they feel obliged to vote for candidates that will push for the killing of witches? Or is this like Moses' dietary laws that no longer apply to Christians?

The masturbation thing is silly and the witchcraft thing doesn't matter. Not at all pleased about her stupid harassment lawsuit. Nor her seeming inability to ever hold a real job. Nor her paying herself rather well from campaign funds. The only reason to vote for her is her opponent is an arrogant, power-abusing neo-Marxist, and ugly too. Of course that wasn't enough to beat al-Franken.
