#3  A different Virginia Hall you should know about.

Virginia Hall MBE DSC (April 6, 1906 - July 14, 1982) was an American spy during World War II. She was also known by many aliases: "Marie Monin", "Germaine", "Diane", and "Camille."[1] The Germans gave her the nickname Artemis. The Gestapo considered her "the most dangerous of all allied spies."[2]

She was born in Baltimore, Maryland and attended prestigious Radcliffe College and Barnard College (Columbia University)[3], but wanted to finish her studies in Europe. With help from her parents, she traveled the Continent and studied in France, Germany, and Austria, finally landing an appointment as a Consular Service clerk at the American Embassy in Warsaw, Poland in 1931. Hall hoped to join the Foreign Service, but suffered a terrible setback around 1932 when she accidentally shot herself in the left leg while hunting in Turkey. It was later amputated from the knee down, and replaced with a wooden appendage she named "Cuthbert."[4] The injury foreclosed whatever chance she might have had for a diplomatic career, and she resigned from the Department of State in 1939.

Afghanistan
2 Rockets Hit Herat City
[Tolo News] Taliban Insurgents launched rocket attacks on Herat city, the picturesque provincial capital of the western Herat province said on Tuesday night

The front man to the governor of Herat, Naqibullah Arween, and the province's deputy commander of police, Delawar Shah Delawar, confirmed the news adding that the attacks were carried out around 08:00pm last night, which had no casualties.

"The rockets were aimed at the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team's office, but the rockets hit residential areas, only smashing windows," said Delawar Shah Delawar.

No anti-government armed group has so far grabbed credit for the attacks.

Police officials in Herat say they have discovered and defused another rocket that was also set to be launched on the city.

Insurgents have escalated their attacks to target government institutions in different parts of the country, and just recently carried out several attacks during the Afghan parliamentary polls to disrupt the elections.

30 Taliban Militants Killed in ISAF Attacks
[Tolo News] At least 30 Taliban bully boyz were killed in ISAF ground and air attacks in the southeastern Khost province on Tuesday night, ISAF says
One of these years they'll match the totals of Iraq, and the world will have been made that much better a place.
These bully boyz were killed in the province's Separi district after a failed attack by the Taliban on an ISAF military base in the province, head of ISAF Press Office in the south-east told TOLOnews.

No ISAF service members and Afghan civilians have been killed or maimed in these operations.

Afghan and coalition forces have escalated their counter-insurgency operations in the country's volatile regions to wipe out Taliban.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
the Afghan Ministry of Interior reports about the arrest of 8 people convicted of smuggling drugs in the south-western provinces of Helmand and Uruzgan.

These men were jugged in five separate military operations in these provinces, a statement released by the Ministry of Interior said.

Police has reportedly seized more than 115 kilograms of drugs in these operations.

Police has also seized more than 17 kilograms of drugs in Kakaran area of Nimroz province in similar attacks.

US runs Afghan force to hunt militants in Pakistan: official
A very clever idea, I think. Someone in the CIA is to be congratulated for coming up with the idea, and then keeping it secret until the president's people spilled the beans to dear Mr. Woodward..
[Dawn] The Central Intelligence Agency runs an Afghan paramilitary force that hunts down Al-Qaeda and Taliban Islamic snuffies in covert operations in Pakistain, a US official said Wednesday.

Confirming an account in a new book by famed reporter Bob Woodward, the US official told AFP that the Counterterrorism Pursuit Teams were highly effective but did not offer details.

"This is one of the best Afghan fighting forces and it's made major contributions to stability and security," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The 3,000-strong paramilitary army of Afghan soldiers was created and bankrolled by the CIA and was designed as an "elite" unit to pursue "highly sensitive covert operations into Pakistain" in the fight against Al-Qaeda and Taliban sanctuaries, according to The Washington Post, which revealed details of the new book.

US President Barack B.O. Obama has sought to pile pressure on Islamic exemplar havens in Pakistain through a stepped up bombing campaign using unmanned aircraft as well as US special forces' operations in Afghan territory.

The administration also has pressed the Mighty Pak army to go after the Taliban and associated groups in the northwest tribal belt.

Revelations about a US-run unit operating in Pakistain are sure to complicate Washington's ties with Islamabad as well as Kabul's difficult relations with Pakistain.
Still more violations of the hallowed Pak sovereignty...
The US military's presence in Afghanistan and its secretive dronezaps across the border are the subject of loud bitching and moaning and suspicion in Pakistain.

Based on interviews with top decision makers, including Obama himself, Woodward's book describes the US president as struggling to find a way to extricate US troops from the Afghan war amid acrimonious debate among advisers and resistance from the military.

Al-Qaeda claims French kidnappings
[Al Jazeera] Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has claimed the abduction of five French nationals in Niger and said that it will make demands to France regarding them.

"In announcing our claim for this operation, we inform the French government that the mujahedeen will later transmit their legitimate demands," a voice claiming to be AQIM front man Salah Abi Mohammed said in an audio message released on Tuesday.

"We also warn [the French government] against any sort of stupidity," he added, in reference to a possible military operation, as French military planes patrolled the desert on Tuesday in an effort to locate the group.

The statement, which did not mention the two African hostages, added that Abdelhamid Abou Zeid, an Algerian, led the kidnap operation.

"Following the promise of our emir, Abou Moussab [Algerian Abdelmalek Droukdel], a group of heroic mujahedeen last Wednesday, under the command of Sheikh Abou Zeid, succeeded in penetrating the French mining site at Arlit in Niger," the message said.

France confirms claims

France has authenticated the claim, and says it has good reason to believe the hostages are alive.

"We are in a position to confirm the authenticity of the claim," Romain Nadal, a French foreign ministry front man said on Wednesday.

"We have not received proof of life, but we have good reasons to believe the hostages are alive."

He said he was not aware of any demands from the hostage takers.

AQIM, which is active in the Sahara and the arid Sahel region, has been increasingly targeting French interests.

The claim came hours after Niger's government front man, Mahamane Laouali Dan Dah, said the hostages - also including a citizen of Togo and another from Madagascar - were still alive.

He did not say what that information was based on.

All seven hostages had worked at a huge uranium mine in northern Niger run by French state-owned nuclear power giant Areva. They were kidnapped by gunnies last Thursday.

Polisario militiamen arrest top security chief
[Al Arabiya] Polisario top security official Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud was jugged on Tuesday evening by the militia of the Western Sahara's Polisario Front upon his arrival in the border post leading to the Tindouf camps, coming from the Mauritanian territory, international media reported.

Polisario militiamen, who were on board of two vehicles, jugged Ould Sidi Mouloud, in the region of Mhiriz, before taking him to unknown destination, according to Al Arabiya sources.

Ould Sidi Mouloud had, earlier in the day, made statements addressing the international public opinion, in which he expressed determination to defend his convictions despite the state of terror the Polisario leadership seeks to impose in the camps to muzzle consciences and prevent them from proclaiming the truth.

He also urged the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society and all international human rights organizations to support him to preserve his right of free speech and his physical integrity.

Ould Sidi Mouloud had announced, early August in the southern city of Smara, his intention to return to the camps of Lahmada to defend Morocco's autonomy proposal.

6 soldiers, 2 al-Qaida fighters killed in clashes in Yemen besieged Hota
(Xinhua) -- At least six soldiers and two al- Qaeda gunnies were killed in fierce clashes on Wednesday between the Yemeni government troops and al-Qaeda forces of Evil in the suburb of the besieged southeast Hota town, a local security official said.

"Among the two confirmed killed al-Qaeda forces of Evil is a son of terrorist Abdullah al-Mihdhar who was killed nearly seven months ago in clashes with the security forces in Hota," the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"Hota town of the southeast province of Shabwa is definitely empty now of local residents who decamped yesterday (Tuesday), and there will be a massive offensive including air strikes to flush out the area and bring inevitable death to those 300 subversive beturbanned goons who holed up in the town," he said.

On Tuesday, a provincial security official told Xinhua that a combined force consisting of more than 1,500 Yemeni soldiers from counter-terrorism units, security foot soldiers and army infantry are tightening siege on the al-Qaeda gunnies holed up in Hota in preparation to strike them.

"The back-up combined force arrived at the area Tuesday afternoon and were deployed around Hota, the third biggest town in the southeast of Shabwa picturesque provincial capital of Ataq, after a total of 20,000 local residents decamped their homes in the morning to dodge the imminent battle," the official said, adding "the town is empty except al-Qaeda gunnies."

According to intelligence reports, as many as 200 al-Qaeda forces of Evil arrived in the town during the past three nights from northeast province Marib and southern province Abyan, bringing the total number of al-Qaeda gunnies there to about 300, he said.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of al-Qaeda network leader Osama bin Laden, has witnessed a series of deadly attacks by al-Qaeda group since late last year.

The Yemeni government has intensified security operations and air raids against terrorist groups after the Yemen-based al-Qaeda wing claimed for an attempt to blow up a U.S.-bound passenger plane last December. Enditem

Bangladesh
Court orders arrest of 4 policemen
[Bangla Daily Star] A Dhaka court yesterday issued arrest warrants against the then Officer-in-charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman of Ramna Police Station and three other police officials for implicating and torturing a Dhaka University student for "attempting to kill" Prof Humayun Azad.

The three other officials are sub-inspectors Rezaul Karim and Naser Ali of Ramna cop shoppe and Sergeant Anwar Hossain who was in charge of Nilkhet police box.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan Talukder passed the order after Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police submitted a report.

The court also directed the OC of Ramna cop shoppe to submit a report by October 26 on execution of arrest warrants against the then OC and three other accused.

Ehsan Uddin Chowdhury, CID inspector and investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the probe reports on Tuesday saying that the charges brought against the four police officials were primarily proved and they should be brought to justice.

But the IO excluded detained former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar from the charge finding no connection of him.

A gang of myrmidons attacked Prof Humayun Azad in front of Bangla Academy when he was on his way back home on February 27, 2004 leaving him seriously injured.

Later on February 28, police jugged Mohammad Abu Abbas Bhuiyan, Mass Education Affairs' secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League central committee for attacking Humayun Azad. Later, he was remanded and taken to Ramna cop shoppe where the police tortured him for giving confessional statement.

But police pressed charges against Jama'atul Mujahedin Bangladesh members in the case while dropping Abbas' name from the charge sheet on November 15 of 2007 after a probe.

After getting bail from the court, Abbas, also a student of Political Science of Dhaka University, filed the case with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on March 5 of 2008 accusing Babar, Mahbubur Rahman and three other police officials for torturing.

After the hearing, the court directed detective branch (DB) of police to submit a report after an investigation. But DB had earlier submitted a final report finding no evidence about the torture on the victim.

Later on July 23 last year, the court had directed CID to probe the matter and submit a report on it. The CID investigated the matter and recorded statements of several people including some accused who were in Ramna cop shoppe and found their involvement in torturing Abbas.

Britain
British Imam Begins Legal Proceedings against Kuwait Shiite who Insulted Prophet's Wife
[Asharq al-Aswat] Egyptian Islamic Dr. Khalid Fikri, Secretary-General of the Committee Defending the Prophet's Honor in Britain issued a statement revealing that his organization have begun legal proceedings against Kuwaiti Shiite activist Yasser al-Habeeb, who insulted the Prophet's wife Sayyida Aisha, who is also known in Arabic as the mother of the faithful. In the statement issued by the Committee Defending the Prophet's Honor, which Asharq Al-Awsat obtain a copy of via Director of the al-Maqreze Center for Historical Studies, Dr. Hani al-Sibai, Dr. Fikri said that "I personally, accompanied by a number of lawyers, issued a complaint against Yasser al-Habeeb to a cop shoppe in north London the day before yesterday."

The statement issued by the Committee Defending the Prophet's Honor added that this organization "is made up of a number of scholars, sheikhs, preachers, and Islamic Shariaa law students, as well as a number of lawyers, politicians, and academics."

In this statement, Dr. Fikri added that "in the complaint issued at the cop shoppe, I informed them that al-Habeeb has incited sectarian unrest between the Sunnis and Shiites, and has angered the Sunni Mohammedans in Britain, causing them to reach a state of boiling point."
"Nice little country you have here. Be a shame if something happened to it."
"We will resort to the legal channels in order to stop this crime and prevent it from being repeated. I have called on the authorities, in my capacity as the Imam of the Sahaba mosque in north London, to take strict action against the figure who insulted Sayidda Aisha, and to arrest him and put him on trail for insulting the Islamic religion, the Prophet's honor, and the honor of the Prophet's wife, as well as for inciting hatred and violence...and causing sectarian unrest between the Sunnis and Shiites, and threatening the social peace in Britain."
Dr. Fikri said that "In my lectures and my Friday sermon, I clarified that we will resort to the legal channels in order to stop this crime and prevent it from being repeated.
Send some Irishmen round to break the honourable imam's legs. That'll calm him down.
Dr. Fikri graduated from the University of Cairo's Faculty of Medicine in 1980; serving as the Faculty of Medicine Student President from 1977 to 1978. He was jugged in Egypt in 1981 as part of the security crackdown on religious hard boyz ordered by President Anwar Sadat, although he was later acquitted by court in 1984. Following this, Dr. Fikri travelled to Kuwait where he worked as a private physician from 1985 to 1997. Dr. Fikri was granted political asylum in Britain in 2005.
It seems to me all asylum cases of the Labour years should be reviewed, and all those connected to extremist organizations should be sent home, along with any family members acquired in the meantime.
The Egyptian Islamist also said that preparations were underway to hold a general conference to discuss this issue on Sunday following midday prayers at London's Hyde Park.

For his part, Director of the al-Maqreze Center for Historical Studies, Dr. Hani al-Sibai, told Asharq Al-Awsat that "there is turmoil in the hearts of Mohammedans in the UK following the crime that was carried out by the Kuwaiti Shiite Yasser al-Habeeb." He added that "during the holy month of Ramadan, whilst Mohammedans were worshipping and preparing to celebrate the historic anniversary of the Battle of Badr which took place on 17 Ramadan...Yasser al-Habeeb -- during a [Shiite] celebration held on the same day to mark the anniversary of the death of Sayyida Aisha -- made insulting remarks about her...inciting the feelings of more than a billion Mohammedans." Dr. al-Sibai added that "the Shiite al-Habeeb insulted the mother of the faithful, Aisha bint Abu Bark al-Siddiq, whose purity and innocence are known throughout the seven heavens."
They may be known throughout the seven heavens, but they aren't here, and we really, really don't care. Do please shut up and go away.
The statements issued by Yasser al-Habeeb, aged 31, on 23 August 2010, have resulted in sectarian unrest throughout the Mohammedan world, especially in Kuwait. These statements also resulted in Kuwaiti authorities withdrawing al-Habeeb's Kuwaiti citizenship, accusing him of abusing religious symbols and attempting to trigger sectarian tensions.

Europe
Italy seizes huge explosives cache
[Al Jazeera] Italian police have seized seven tonnes of the powerful RDX explosives from a container ship believed to be on its way to Syria, according to authorities.

Anti-mafia police found the explosives hidden in a shipment of powdered milk at the port of Gioia Tauro in southern Calabria, Italian news agencies reported.

Carmelo Casabona, the region's police chief, said investigators are not yet sure of who was in control of the shipment, but it appeared that it originally travelled from Iran.
Iran to Syria via Italy. Happens all the time ...
Also known as T4, RDX is a powerful military grade explosive that has been used in several devastating attacks believed to have been carried out by the Italian mafia in past years.

It was most notably used in the assassinations of anti-mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the former being blown up with his wife and three bodyguards after a bomb exploded under a motorway.

Casabona said the cargo had "the involvement of international criminal organisations," but ruled out the involvement of local mafia, know as the Ndrangheta, saying the shipment was too large.

The cargo was reportedly found on a Liberian-registered ship called the Finland, which is owned by an Italian-Swiss company, MSC. However the company has not yet confirmed the story to the media.

#7  It is probably not practical to be self-critical in a blog designed to express hyperbolic patriotism. Nevertheless any group of people even remotely respectful of “well reasoned discourse” is bound to have a good number of members with enough sense of decency to find the saga of Dr. Siddiqui too horrible and too soul shaking to become a contributor in the torture and injustice dished out to her, by ignoring the many facts that belie the prosecutorial charges. Least among them being the fact that she was never charged with terrorism despite having been in U.S. custody and under interrogation for many years.

The fact that she was under nourished and weighed less than 100 lbs at the time of her alleged (now convicted) crime gives many a pause to think. The fact that she left home (allegedly for terrorism) in 2003 with three children including an EIGHTEEN MONTHS OLD make the story against her sound downright ridiculous.

How do I know what I have written here will not be lost to the readers of this blog? I see that only four people have harshly commented on her whereas 21 4 have read this article so far. I thank the fans of Rantburg for their decency and to those who may not be fully informed of this matter I suggest the following link:

#8  Ms. Siddiqui got off easy. She should have been shot on the spot the moment she pointed the weapon at our soldiers, our countrymen.

Hyperbolic patriotism, probably, but if our people are getting shot at, I want our side to win.

Another protester dies in unrest in Srinagar
[Dawn] One more young man maimed during protests against Indian rule died Wednesday as thousands of troops enforced a rigid curfew for the 10th straight day in the troubled Indian-administered Kashmir, police said.
There were no fresh street protests, a rare breather in almost daily protests.

However,
The infamous However...
the 20-year-old protester maimed in a street battle with government forces on Sept. 13 died in hospital in the main city of Srinagar, a police officer said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

Kashmir has been rocked by deadly civil unrest since early June, with at least 107 people killed in protests and clashes with government forces - mostly teenage boys and young men in their 20s.

Human rights group Amnesty International has urged Indian authorities to investigate the killings and stop using lethal force against the demonstrators.

Last Friday, the government deployed the army for crowd control as protests by Kashmiris escalated in the region.

Thousands of armed troops enforced the round-the-clock curfew in Srinagar and other major towns in Kashmir on Wednesday. They put up razor wire and iron barricades and asked people to stay in their homes in announcements over loudspeakers fitted to their armored vehicles.

People were allowed to stock up on food and other items during a brief relaxation in the curfew on Tuesday.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
nearly 40 lawmakers from major Indian national parties concluded a three-day visit to the region on Wednesday.

Led by Indian Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram, the delegation came from New Delhi to find ways to address long-standing demands of Kashmiri Mohammedans for self-rule or a merger with a predominantly Mohammedan Pakistain.

Kashmiri separatist leaders met some of the lawmakers on Monday, but they dismissed the visit as grandstanding by the Indian government.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Jerusalem flare-up after Israeli kills Palestinian
An Israeli security guard killed a Palestinian in an Arab area in Jerusalem,
I wonder what the Palestinian had done to get himself killed. Israelis don't generally kill random strangers just for the fun of it.
triggering clashes between police and rioters, including in the al-Aqsa mosque compound.

Police said they entered the plaza to push back Palestinians who had thrown rocks at the nearby Jewish prayer site the Western Wall.
From above, which is where the al-Aqsa mosque is. The brave, brave Lions of Islam, dropping rocks on the heads of those praying below.
The Palestinians withdrew into the armory mosque, Islam's third-holiest shrine, and there were no immediate reports of casualties or further confrontations, a spokesman said.

Palestinian officials said the killing of a 32-year-old resident of East Jerusalem and subsequent police response had undermined nascent US-sponsored peace negotiations.
Which weren't going anywhere anyway ...
Israeli authorities said the guard, who provided government-funded protection for a small Jewish settlement in the Silwan district, opened fire on dozens of Palestinians who had blocked and stoned his car before dawn.
This is why we do not harass someone openly carrying a gun, ladies and gentlemen. Darwin wins again.
"It was his life or theirs," said Ariel Rosenberg, spokesman for Israel's Construction and Housing Ministry.
Stones can kill. No one in the MFM ever seems to remember that.
Silwan residents took to the streets after the incident, overturning two cars, torching two others and throwing rocks at police and passersby. Police said they responded with teargas, water cannon and stun grenades.

At least seven Israeli civilians and a policeman were hurt in the clashes, police said. Silwan residents said two Palestinians were wounded in the initial shooting and more in later confrontations, but exact figures were not available.

Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of the dead man, who had 5 children, and confrontations spread to the nearby Old City, where the al-Aqsa mosque abuts the Western Wall.

#1  An awful lot of al-Asqa crap would end if the Israelis just did what many other countries have done, and nationalize the "holy sites".

They can be very liberal with lease terms, but if say the Wahabbis cut up rough, they can cancel their lease, and turn management of the mosque over to the Sufi sect.

The mere threat of doing this would make the Wahabbis poop themselves.

Southeast Asia
Gunmen kill trader, wife in S Philippines
(Xinhua) -- Gunmen killed a local trader and his wife Wednesday morning in front of a Roman Catholic-run school in the southern Philippines, police said.

Noni Luminog and his wife, Mylene, were attacked by two armed men while they were about to leave the parking area of Notre dame School along Sinsuat Avenue in the southern city of Cotabato, police said.

The attackers immediately left the scene after confirming their targets were dead due to fatal bullet wounds in their heads and bodies, said Senior Superintendent Willy Dangane, a local police commander.

"The couple had just brought their children to school when the assassination occurred," Dangane said.

Police have started investigating the incident.

In July 2009, six people were killed when a bomb exploded in front of a Catholic church in Cotabato.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran arrests 2 over Mahabad attack
[Iran Press TV] Police say they have jugged two people in connection with a terrorist attack in northwestern Iranian city of Mahabad, which killed 12 people and maimed scores of others.

The blast took place during a military parade in West Azarbaijan Province on Wednesday. Provincial officials say ten of the victims are women.

The bomb was planted inside a pine tree near the site of the parade as people were commemorating the 1980-1988 Iraqi-imposed war on Iran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast strongly condemned the bombing and blamed it on Israel.

"The terrorist attack in Mahabad is the reaction of Israeli agents and the supporters of the Zionist regime [of Israel] to the country's defensive prowess in the Sacred Defense Week and the successes of the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran's active diplomacy in the biggest international arena in New York," he said.
That last would be where the UN translators refused to use the canned English speech that didn't match "Dr." Ahmadinejad's Farsi one? My dear, you do realize everyone is laughing about that, don't you?
He said that the enemies are targeting the Iranian nation's resilience, but they do not know that such measures have no effect on the will of the people and the officials of the Islamic Theocratic Republic.

Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar condemned the attack and said the perpetrators of the bombing would be identified and brought to justice.

Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said the enemy sought to create division between Iranians by this attack but they were mistaken to think that they could reach their objective.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has denounced the terrorist attack saying, "I condemn the bombing targeting Iranians attending a parade in Mahabad today and offer my sympathy to the families and loved ones of those injured and killed."

Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah also condemned the "terrorist attack which targeted innocent people and is against the tenets of Islam and humane values," in a message to Iran's diminutive President Mahmoud Short Round Ahmadinejad.

Russia will not supply Iran with S-300 missiles
[Al Arabiya] Russia has dropped plans to supply Iran with S-300 missiles because they are subject to international sanctions, a top general said on Wednesday, in the strongest confirmation yet of the leadership's intentions to put the controversial sale on ice.

"A decision has been taken not to supply the S-300 to Iran, they undoubtedly fall under sanctions," the chief of the general staff Nikolai Makarov said in an apparent reference to U.N. sanctions, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

"There was a decision by the leadership to stop the supply process, we are carrying it out," Makarov was quoted as saying.
