[Breitbart] A U.S. federal court sentenced a Salvadoran man to nearly four years in prison for his role in helping his wife and her boyfriend smuggle weapons and ammunition into Mexico. In one of the smuggling attempts, the group tried to send more than 13,000 rounds of ammunition across the Texas-Mexico.
No wonder we’re having a bullet shortage here.
Juan Jose Roque, age 36, went before U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez in McAllen, Texas, who sentenced him to three years and ten months in federal prison on arms and ammunition smuggling charges. Roque pleaded guilty to the charges on April 29. Since he is in the country illegally, Roque faces deportation upon completion of his incarceration.
That’s one of them, anyway, though whether it will really happens will depend on who is in the White House at the time..
The case began on December 17, 2020, when federal authorities arrested 25-year-old Juan Marvin Garcia as he drove to the border in a vehicle loaded with more than 13,000 rounds of ammunition for AK-47-style rifles. The vehicle also contained other types of ammunition and a handgun, the criminal complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas revealed. A federal judge sentenced Garcia to three years in prison.
Agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) learned that Garcia was working under orders of his girlfriend, 44-year-old Brendalit Hernandez, who told him to drive from the Dallas area to Hidalgo, Texas, where he would park the vehicle loaded with ammunition. Hernandez instructed him to call someone in Mexico about the vehicle’s location.
“It’ll be the one riding low on its springs — you can’t miss it.”
From there, Garcia was to ride a bus to his home in Garland, Texas. In June 2021, agents arrested Hernandez for her role as the leader of a gun and ammo smuggling organization. Her sentencing date is scheduled for later this month.
Months later, HSI agents stopped Roque and questioned him about his wife’s arrest. Roque told agents that he would purchase ammunition and weapons for himself and for his wife’s smuggling organization. The man said he also assisted in concealing the items in vehicles that would be sent to Mexico.
“I confess to all! Prison is better than having to live with that bitch when she’s released!”
[TOLONEWS] The remains of Mawlawi Mujeeb Rahman Ansari and 17 others who were killed in a suicide kaboom at Guzargah mosque of Herat ...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns... province were buried on Saturday.
Ansari, his brother, and 16 other worshipers were killed after a jacket wallah blew up himself at Guzargah mosque.
The attack left 23 people maimed.
The residents of Herat voiced concerns over attacks that target civilians in public areas.
"We call on the Islamic Emirate to provide security for the holy mans, so the holy mans will not be killed from now on," said Mohammad Qassim Sabiri, a resident of Herat.
Meanwhile, ...back at the precinct house, Don Calamari's lawyer was getting even redder in the face... the local officials in Herat said that the perpetrators of the attack would be held accountable.
"The brothers were greeting, and then I started greeting them, but then I opened my eyes, I was at the hospital," said Ghulam Hazrat Nizami, a victim of the blast.
"I heard a sound, when I heard it, I lied down but my hands and feet were hit by shrapnel," said Rameen, a maimed person.
Talking at the funeral ceremony of the victims, the provincial governor, Mawlawi Noor Ahmad Islamjar said that the people involved in the attack will be brought to justice.
"They will not be free anywhere in this world," he said.
"Those who committed this crime will be punished," said Mawlawi Khudadad Saleh, a religious holy man.
Many Islamic holy mans have been recently targeted, and in many instances ISIS has grabbed credit.

"Herat’s Guzargah Mosque, where Ansari had long been the preacher, draws followers of Sunni Islam, the dominant stream in Afghanistan, which is also followed by the Taliban.."
"In modern-day Saudi Arabia, the Sunni rulers limit Shiite political participation to "notables", according to scholar Vali Nasr. "

[TOLONEWS] In a presser, Abdul Karim Haider, the deputy minister of justice, stated that Hanafi law serves as the framework for resolving people's problems.
"The holy Koran, the Sunnah of Mohammad (PTUI!), and the jurisprudence of every Islamic country are the basis and the text of the constitution in general and in detail," Haidar said.
"A constitution for any government in the modern era is a crucial and a basic requirement. No government in the modern era can function without a constitution," said Fazel Hadi Wazin, a university lecturer.
Regarding political party activities, the deputy minister of justice noted that given the current situation, there is no need for parties to be active.
Speaking of the work being done by women lawyers in the country, he said that all women would be provided their rights under Islamic law.
"The Islamic Emirate will grant women the rights that Islam has granted them--when the conditions are favorable," Haider said. "Now get in the bag!"
According to ministry officials, the ministry is prepared to prepare the constitution in accordance with Islamic law at the Prime Minister's request.
"We are awaiting Amirul Muminin's direction. when he directs the creation of law. The Hanafi law system, the Koran, and the Sunnah of Mohammad (PTUI!) are its sources, thus we are confident that a comprehensive law will be established quickly to address everyone's concerns, Haidar stated.
The Ministry of Justice added that this organization's revenue over the previous year exceeded 42 million Afghanis.

The UK has bits and pieces -- like the Magna Carta, which made it clear the monarchy wasn't Supreme -- and traditions that USED to be dependable to protect individual liberty.
Sadly, they got convinced that inefficient Healthcare, rationing, and lots of curry outweighed all that.

[Breitbart] Mexico’s lower congressional chamber held a midnight vote that gave ultimate control of their civilian federal police force to the nation’s military. The move sparked much controversy as Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) and his party had campaigned to de-militarizing the country as a way to diminish the rampant cartel violence.
Shortly after midnight on Saturday, Mexico’s chamber of deputies voted in favor of a series of reforms to the nations law that had been proposed by Lopez Obrador. The changes called for turning control of the civilian federal police force called the National Guard over to the country’s National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA), the newspaper El País reported. The controversial vote went along party lines with the members of the ruling party Morena voting in favor of the move.
In August, López Obrador said that he would publish a decree to transfer the command of the institution to SEDENA (Mexican Army). He added that he would also ask for a series of reforms from Congress so that the military could control the budget and administration of the National Guard, El Universal reported.
Lopez Obrador created the National Guard in 2019 as his answer to solving the cartel violence and corruption plaguing the country. Lopez Obrador disbanded the nation’s federal police and moved those agents to the National Guard to bolster the troop numbers. He then moved several soldiers and naval infantrymen over from SEDENA and the Naval Secretariat (SEMAR).
Currently, the Mexican National Guard has 115,000 members nationwide. However, the security body has drawn much criticism for its lack of performance as cartel violence continues to spread throughout the country. This is despite claims by AMLO that crime rates are dropping.
At the time that the National Guard was created, AMLO and the Morena Party agreed with other parties that the command of the National Guard would be civilian and that it would only resort to the Armed Forces in an “extraordinary case.”
The move to militarize the National Guard was fiercely contested by opposition parties which led to fierce debates. They did not have the numbers to win the vote. Jorge Triana, a politician from the National Action Party (PAN), lashed at Lopez Obrador and the move by Morena calling him, “The most militaristic president in the history of the country,” Milenio news reported.
In response, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, a politician from the Workers Party (PT), defended Lopez Obrador claiming that his movement, also known as the Fourth Transformation, would never use the military to repress the people.
“It was you who militarized the country,” Fernandez Noroña said. “It was you who bathed the country in blood. It was you who put the nation in this nightmare. And it is you who, in alliance with drug traffickers, that continue to set the country on fire.”
As Breitbart Texas previously reported, Fernandez Noroña has been a controversial figure for some time after he posted a shirtless photo of himself and reportedly requested nude images from social media influencers.

[KavkazUzel] Collections of hadiths and generally accepted works of Islamic scholars should be included in the list of religious literature that cannot be classified as extremist materials, said the Coordinating Center of Muslims of the North Caucasus after the publication of the collection "Sahih al-Bukhari" was banned.
Sahih al-Bukhari is a hadith collection and a book of sunnah compiled by the Persian scholar Muḥammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari around 846. Alongside Sahih Muslim, it is supposedly one of the most valued books in Sunni Islam after the Quran.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 31, Ramzan Kadyrov demanded to reconsider the decision to include the collection of sayings of the Prophet Muhammad "Sahih al-Bukhari" in the list of extremist materials. In his opinion, the court "turned to incompetent expertise", while "Sahih al-Bukhari" is "a reliable source of the biography of the Prophet Muhammad, which Muslim scholars recognize as second in importance after the Holy Quran."

[IsraelTimes] Group accused of assisting driver of truck who plowed through crowd in 2016, killing 86 before he was rubbed out by police
It was Bastille Day on the French Riviera.
A lawyer was strolling with her mother, friends and a colleague along the beachfront boulevard in Nice to celebrate La Belle France’s national day. Four young sisters from Poland had spent a day of sightseeing. Two Russian students were on a summer break. And a Texas family, on vacation with young children, was taking in some of Europe’s classic sights. The bright lights of the packed boardwalk glittered along the bay like a string of stars.
Those lights would mark a pathway of murder and destruction that night of July 14, 2016. Shortly after the end of a fireworks display, a 21-ton truck careered through the crowds for two kilometers (1¼ miles) like a snow plow, hitting person after person.
The final corpse count was 86, including 15 children and adolescents, while 450 others were maimed.
Eight people go on trial on Monday in a special French terrorism court accused of helping the attacker, Mohammed Lahouaiej Bouhlel,
...described at the time as weird loner who became depressed when his wife left him, but really he was a jihad-curious French resident from M'saken, Tunisia and father of three with a taste for petty criminality, a background of psychological problems — whatever that means — and a vast acquaintance in the jihad-curious world who finally dunnit...
who left a gruesome trail of crushed and mangled bodies across 15 city blocks. Bouhlel himself was killed by police the same night.
Three suspects have been charged with terrorist conspiracy for alleged links to the attacker. Five others face other criminal charges, including for allegedly providing arms to the assailant. If convicted, they face sentences ranging from five years to life in prison. The verdict is expected in December.
Investigators did not find evidence that any of the suspects were directly involved in the murderous rampage on that hot summer night in 2016.
Bouhlel, a 31-year-old Tunisian with French residency, was the lone attacker, and is considered solely responsible for the deaths 86 people, including 33 foreigners from Poland, the United States, Russia, Algeria, Tunisia, Switzerland ...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell... and elsewhere.
The Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... group grabbed credit for the carnage. However, ars longa, vita brevis... French prosecutors said that while Bouhlel had been inspired by the holy warrior group’s propaganda, Sherlocks found no evidence that IS orchestrated the attack.
Eight months before the Nice attack, on November 13, 2015, a 20-member team of battle-hardened Islamic State holy warriors, spread around Gay Paree to mount coordinated attacks on the Bataclan concert hall, cafes and the national stadium, killing 130 people and injuring hundreds. After nine months of trial, the lone survivor of the murderous group that had terrorized the French capital, Salah Abdeslam, was in June convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole for the deadliest peacetime attack in La Belle France’s history.
The trial of the eight suspects in the Nice attack will take place in the same Gay Paree courtroom as the proceedings against Abdeslam. French law mandates trials of terrorism are held in the capital.
The proceedings will be broadcast live to the Acropolis Convention Center in Nice for those victims’ family members and general public not traveling to Gay Paree. Audio of the trial will also be available online, with a 30-minute delay.

[CBS News] At least 10 people are dead and 15 others hospitalized after a series of stabbing attacks in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, police said Sunday. Two suspects were still on the loose Sunday evening, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.
The stabbings occurred in 13 separate locations throughout James Smith Cree Nation and in the village of Weldon, police said.
RCMP said they are looking for 31-year-old Damien Sanderson and 30-year-old Myles Sanderson in connection with the stabbings. Damien Sanderson was described as being 5'7" and weighing roughly 155 pounds. Police said Myles Sanderson is 6'1" and around 200 pounds. Police believe they may be driving a black Nissan Rogue. Look at those faces. Frankly, I don't believe the names.
Rhonda Blackmore, the Assistant Commissioner of the RCMP Saskatchewan, said some of the victims appear to have been targeted by the suspects but others appear to have been attacked at random. She couldn't provide a motive.
Blackmore said police began receiving reports before 6 a.m. of stabbings on the First Nation community. More reports of attacks quickly followed and by midday police issued a warning that a vehicle reportedly carrying the two suspects had been spotted in Regina.
Police said the last information they had from the public was that the suspects were sighted there around lunchtime. There have been no sightings since.
Regina police chief Evan Bray said later Sunday night that the suspects were still at large and police "still believe the suspects are likely in the city of Regina."
"If in the Regina area, take precautions & consider sheltering in place. Do not leave a secure location. DO NOT APPROACH suspicious persons. Do not pick up hitchhikers. Report suspicious persons, emergencies or info to 9-1-1. Do not disclose police locations," the RCMP said in a message on Twitter.
[CNN] Canadian authorities are searching for two men in connection with a mass stabbing Sunday that left at least 10 dead and 15 injured across multiple scene of the crimes in Saskatchewan in central Canada.
Authorities have identified the two suspects as Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson, and are advising the public to take appropriate precautions. The pair are believed to be armed and dangerous and traveling in a black Nissan Rogue with a Saskatchewan license plate 119 MPI.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba are all jointly investigating the stabbings.
"We are dedicating a maximum number of resources to this investigation," said Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore with the RCMP Saskatchewan in a statement.
"Let me be clear, we are still looking for the two suspects. We are asking residents across Saskatchewan and our neighbouring provinces to be vigilant. At this stage in our investigation, we believe some of the victims have been targeted by the suspects and others have been attacked randomly," Blackmore said.
Authorities described Damien Sanderson as a 31-year-old man who is 5-feet-7 inches tall, 155 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. Myles Sanderson is described as a 30-year-old man who is 6-feet-1-inch tall and 240 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
HOW THE STABBINGS TOOK PLACE
Blackmore said the first stabbing report came at 5:40 a.m. local time (6:30 a.m. ET) on the James Smith Cree Nation and within minutes they received multiple calls reporting additional stabbings. Over the next six hours, Saskatchewan RCMP sent out multiple alerts and updates on the stabbings including issuing a Dangerous Persons Alert for Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta.
Authorities said there are 13 scene of the crimes where victims were found across Saskatchewan in the communities of James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon. Several victims were maimed, at least 15 of whom were taken to various hospitals, Blackmore said, adding that there may be additional injured victims who took themselves to the hospital.
Rhonda Blackmore, the Assistant Commissioner of the RCMP Saskatchewan, said some of the victims appear to have been targeted by the suspects but others appear to have been attacked at random. She couldn’t provide a motive.
Blackmore said by midday police issued a warning that a vehicle reportedly carrying the two suspects had been spotted in Regina.
Police said the last information they had from the public was that the suspects were sighted in Saskatchewan’s capital of Regina around lunchtime. There have been no sightings since.

[SHAFAQ] Iraq's adversaries are sparing no effort to undermine its burgeoning political experience via violence, the spokesperson to Iraq's top Shiite authority, Sadredin al-Qabaneji, said on Sunday.
Al-Qabaneji's remarks came during a speech he delivered during the seventh general meeting of "AhlulBayt World Assembly" in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
"Amid huge challenges, Iraq managed to establish a constitutional democratic system based on the provisions of Islam, overcome the attempts to rip and divide Iraq, [achieve] the independence and kick out the invasion in less than five years, end the sectarian war, [achieve] victory over ISIS," he said.
The Shiite holy man commended the peaceful transition of authority in the country, Iraq's role in the Iranian-Saudi talks, fighting normalization with Israel, and reconciling between the components.
"Iraq is facing two choices: peaceful rectification of the experience while preserving it; a choice the authority adopts," he said on forming the government, "forced change apart from the constitution under the title of reform."

So, basically they're fighting over-islamification. Got it.
[Western Standard] The entire operation took less than a minute.
In all, fifteen bullets were fired, leaving Iran's top nuclear scientist dead.
Iran’s intelligence service had warned him of a possible assassination plot but the scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, had brushed it off.
That afternoon, he and his wife would leave their vacation home on the Caspian Sea and drive to their country house in Absard, a sleepy town east of Tehran, where they planned to spend the weekend.
Disregarding the advice of his security team, he often insisted on driving his own car instead of having bodyguards drive him in an armored vehicle — a breach of security that had been noticed.
According to a special report in the New York Times, shortly after noon on Friday, Nov. 27, he slipped behind the wheel of his black Nissan Teana sedan, his wife in the passenger seat beside him, and hit the road.
Since 2007, Israeli agents of the Mossad had assassinated five Iranian nuclear scientists and wounded another.
Most of the scientists worked directly for Fakhrizadeh (pronounced fah-KREE-zah-deh) on what Israeli intelligence officials said was a covert program to build a nuclear warhead.
But the man Israel said led the bomb program was elusive.
In 2009, a hit team was waiting for Fakhrizadeh at the site of a planned assassination in Tehran, but the operation was called off at the last moment, the New York Times reported. The plot had been compromised, the Mossad suspected, and Iran had laid an ambush.
This time they were going to try something new — a killer robot.

[Rudaw] Donations by Paleostinian villagers are funding a new settlement in the Kurdish city of Afrin in northern Syria to house displaced Syrian Arabs, an Istanbul based organization and rights group reported.
Since March 2018, when Ottoman Turkish army and its Syrian mercenaries occupied Afrin after two months of intense fighting with Kurdish forces, an Arabisation policy of the Kurdish land has been ongoing with funds from the Gulf countries and now from Paleostinian residents of a village in Jerusalem whcih was occupied by Israel decades ago.
The Istanbul-based Wafaa al-Mohsenin foundation, which describes itself as "a non-governmental, humanitarian relief and development NGO that works to serve humanity and develop low-income communities," said that it completed the construction of 34 houses for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in az-Za’ayyem settlement in northern Syria without mentioning the city.

[Insider] Many Americans were reminded last week that the United States remains actively engaged in military combat overseas. But this conflict is not in Afghanistan, where the US withdrew its forces last August. Nor is it in Ukraine, where President Joe Biden has gone out of his way to avoid direct military involvement. It's in Syria.
Last week, the Biden administration authorized airstrikes against Iranian-backed militants in response to rocket attacks on bases housing US forces. While the militants' rockets resulted in only minor injuries to US troops, reports indicate that the US retaliatory strikes were quite extensive and deadly.
While the Afghanistan War seemed to last "forever" and the war in Ukraine has "fixated" the public for the past six months, the Syrian war appears to be largely "forgotten."
To be fair, it has generated attention at certain moments, such as when then-President Barack Obama decided not to attack the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in response to the use of chemical weapons in 2013, or when his successor, President Donald Trump, chose to respond with force to a chemical weapons attack in 2017.
There was also much outrage over the brutal killings — including of Americans — by the Islamic State in 2015, as well as angst over the US decision to "abandon the Kurds" — the on-the-ground partners for the US-led coalition that went on to militarily defeated the Islamic State — back in 2019. Even the 2016 vice presidential debate featured a segment on the war.

[IsraelTimes] Scorched area can be seen at end of northern Syria runway; radio navigation system at Damascus airport also hit in subsequent Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... Wednesday
A satellite image taken Thursday showed damage at the Aleppo International Airport in northern Syria, in an airstrike attributed to Israel the previous night.
The image, taken by Planet Labs PBC and provided by Aurora Intel, appeared to show a scorched area near the end of the runway.
Near the damaged area several vehicles can be seen in the image, likely conducting repairs to the runway, said Aurora Intel, a network that provides news and updates based on open-source intelligence. The strike tore a hole through the runway, as well as ignited a grassfire at the airfield.
A radio navigation system, south of the runway, used to aid aircraft in staying on course was also seen damaged in the image.
On Wednesday night, Syria said Israel carried out two consecutive airstrikes, the first on the Aleppo airport and the second near the capital Damascus. The second target was later said to be a similar navigation system used by the Damascus International Airport.
Syria, like many Middle East nations, has dual-use airports that include civilian and military sides.
According to an official notice sent by Syrian aviation authorities, the radio navigation system was out of service at the Damascus airport. Aurora Intel said additional satellite images appeared to confirm damage was caused to the site.
Still, planes continued to land at the airport throughout Thursday.
Another notice, known as a NOTAM, stated that the runway at the Aleppo airport was damaged, along with the navigational system seen damaged in the satellite image.
Aleppo is a major city in northern Syria, near its border with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund... , and is an uncommon — though not unprecedented — target for reported Israeli airstrikes.
According to Aurora Intel, a sanctioned Iranian cargo plane had landed at the Aleppo airport several hours before the strike. It was not clear if the plane, or cargo it was carrying, had been hit in the attack.
Just before the strike, a transponder on an Antonov An-74 cargo plane flown by Iran’s Yas Air sanctioned years earlier by the US Treasury over flying weapons on behalf of the paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps briefly pinged near Aleppo, according to flight-tracking data. The altitude and location suggested the plane planned to land in Aleppo.
Cargo aircraft over Syria often don’t broadcast their location data. A phone number listed to Yas Air rang unanswered.
Iran ...Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979... and Syria’s missions to the United Nations ...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships... did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.
Earlier Thursday, Syria’s Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad ...Syrian foreign minister, formerly Perrmanent envoy to the UN. He replaced Wally Muallem, who died in office at age 79, having been FM since approximately age 12... issued a harsh warning to Israel over the airstrikes. He said Israel was "playing with fire" and risking a wider military conflict, according to Arabic media reports.
There were no reports of injuries in the alleged attacks.
As a rule, Israel’s military does not comment on specific strikes in Syria, but has admitted to conducting hundreds of sorties against Iran-backed groups attempting to gain a foothold in the country. It says it also attacks arms shipments believed to be bound for those groups, chief among them Lebanese Hezbollah.
Earlier this year, airstrikes attributed to Israel caused major damage to the Damascus International Airport, halting all air traffic for two weeks.
Generally, relatively large weapons are thought to be smuggled via Syria on Iranian cargo airlines, which frequently land at Damascus International and the Tiyas, or T-4, airbase, outside of the central Syrian city of Palmyra.
The weaponry is then believed to be stored in warehouses in the area before being trucked to Lebanon Hezbollahstan ...a strong argument in favor of European colonialism, even French colonialism... .

[IsraelTimes] Saudi-owned paper quotes Syrian officials as saying Moscow ordered Iran ...The nation is noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence... to leave bases in areas Russia sees as important, as it seeks stability
Russia has demanded that Iran and its militias withdraw from positions across Syria, amid an apparent uptick in Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... s attributed to Israel in recent weeks, according to a Friday report.
A-Sharq al-Awsat, a Saudi-owned daily published in London, cited Syrian officials as saying Russian officers called on their Iranian counterparts during a Wednesday meeting at the Hama Military Airport in central Syria, to leave several sites in the country.
The report said the three Russian officers demanded they evacuate the Iranian military headquarters in the western Hama province, which is situated next to the Syrian army’s Regiment 49 base.
The base is considered an important military site to Syria, as it is used to store missiles for the S-200 air defense system, as well as other Russian-made military equipment, the report said.
Another site the Russian officers demanded the Iranians evacuate was close to the coastal city of al-Hamidiyah, south of Tartus, the report said. In July, Syria accused Israel of targeting a site in the town, in a rare morning airstrike.
The report said the calls came as Russia was seeking to maintain stability in Syria, and to deprive Israel of targets to bomb in areas Russia sees as important. An airstrike attributed to Israel last month hit several Iranian sites close to Russia’s main naval base in Syria, at the port city of Tartus.
As a rule, Israel’s military does not comment on specific strikes in Syria, but has admitted to conducting hundreds of sorties against Iran-backed groups attempting to gain a foothold in the country in recent years. It says it also attacks arms shipments believed to be bound for those groups, chief among them Lebanese Hezbollah.
A major airstrike last week targeted numerous buildings at a Syrian weapons base in the Masyaf area of Hama. The Scientific Studies and Research Center, known as CERS, has been reported to house an Iranian missile manufacturing plant.
Israeli strikes have continued in Syrian airspace, which is largely controlled by Russia, even as ties with Moscow have deteriorated in recent months. Israel has found itself at odds with Russia as it has increasingly supported Ukraine while seeking to maintain freedom of movement in Syria’s skies.
The most recent airstrike attributed to Israel occurred Wednesday night, when two major airports — one in the northern city of Aleppo and the second near the capital Damascus — were damaged.

[An Nahar] Iranian authorities have introduced defense systems in 51 cities to counter "biological, radiological and chemical threats," deputy defense minister Mehdi Farahi has announced.
The defense ministry has "provided 51 cities in the country with the necessary installations and equipment for passive defense," Farahi was cited as saying on Saturday by Iribnews, the state broadcaster's website.
He added that the ministry is "now able to identify the threats thanks to the infrastructure put in place to confront all sorts of biological, radiological and chemical threats."
The announcement comes as Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. On August 28, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said instructions had been given to the army and the Mossad spy agency to "prepare for any scenario" in the event that the deal is passed.
In March 2021, Iran's former defense minister Amir Hatami had said that the Islamic republic should be ready to defend itself against nuclear, chemical and biological attacks.
"We must be ready to defend our nation against all threats and anything that the enemy could one day use as a tool for attack," he said at an event commemorating a 1987 chemical attack against Iranian Kurds by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
"These include (attacks using) chemical, nuclear and biological weapons," Hatami added, according to Fars news agency.
During the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, Saddam's forces launched numerous chemical attacks on Iran, including the 1987 strike on the Kurdish town of Sardasht in northwestern Iran.
The official toll was 119 dead and 1,518 maimed, but witnesses say thousands more were exposed to what experts say was mustard gas, dropped in canisters from planes.

[An Nahar] Like many people in crisis-hit Leb ...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers... , Elias Skaff used to wait for hours to withdraw cash at the bank but now prefers money transfer companies as trust in lenders has evaporated.
Anyone who relies on traditional banks to receive their money "will die 100 times before cashing it," said Skaff, 50, who has survived Lebanon's three-year-old economic downturn with the help of U.S. dollar payments from a relative abroad.
Once the flagship of Lebanon's economy, the banking sector is now widely despised and avoided after banks barred depositors from accessing their savings, stopped offering loans, closed hundreds of branches and slashed thousands of jobs.
Last month, a local man was widely cheered as a folk hero after he stormed a Beirut bank with a rifle and held employees and customers hostage for hours to demand some of his $200,000 in frozen savings to pay hospital bills for his sick father.
Increasingly, as Lebanon's deep crisis shows no sign of abating, money transfer agencies are filling the gap, also offering currency exchange, credit card and tax payment services and even setting up wedding gift registries.
Skaff said he now receives his money via a Beirut branch of Western Union's Lebanese agent OMT, which says it operates more than 1,200 branches nationwide and handles 80 percent of money transfers outside the Lebanese banking sector.
"We create services similar to those that banks provide at the request of our customers," said OMT front man Naji Abou Zeid.
Lebanon has been battered by its worst-ever economic crisis since the financial sector went into meltdown in 2019. The local currency has lost more than 90 percent of its value on the black market, as poverty and unemployment have soared.
Angry protesters have often targeted banks, trashing their ATM machines with rocks and spray cans.
"We can't even withdraw a penny" from the bank, said 45-year-old Alaa Sheikhani, a customer standing in line at an OMT branch.
"How are we supposed to trust them with our money?"

[MIDDLEEASTEYE] Not since 2006 has the risk of war between Lebanon and Israel been so high.
Since Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah threatened to use force to prevent Israel from unilaterally extracting gas from certain eastern Mediterranean fields, there has been open and secret diplomacy to avoid a conflict whose consequences would be incalculable.
On 13 July, for the first time, Nasrallah explicitly threatened Israel with war if it went ahead with its plans in early September to start operating the Karish gas field, located on the edge of the Lebanese Exclusive Economic Zone.
These threats, repeated several times in recent weeks, were preceded by the launch of three surveillance drones towards the Karish platform on 2 July.
This was followed by the broadcast of a video as part of that psychological warfare, showing a launch pad and Iranian land-to-sea missiles of the Nour type (a modified version of the Chinese C-802 missile) and infrared images of Karish and Israeli production and extraction floating units around the platform, with their geographical coordinates.
THE MILITARY OPTION
At the end of July, Hezbollah operatives, dressed in khakis but without weapons, marched along the Lebanese-Israeli border, a few metres from the Israeli soldiers posted on the other side of the fence.
Nasrallah's threats peaked on 10 August. Addressing the crowd during the commemoration of Ashura, which marks the martyrdom in 680 of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, the leader of Hezbollah asked his supporters to "be prepared for any eventuality... The hand that will touch our wealth will be severed," he insisted.
"By putting the military option on the table, Hassan Nasrallah actually wants to relaunch negotiations on the demarcation of the maritime border at a time when gas extraction in the eastern Mediterranean is becoming a global issue in the context of the confrontation between Russia and western countries," a former Lebanese foreign minister, who requested anonymity, told Middle East Eye.
