But Wangita's lawyer David Spens QC said his previous convictions "don't establish any pattern of committing any offences of violence".
No, never! Used to send his mother flowers and all that! Let's see here: Weapons possession, fraud, threatening behavior. Nope, nope, no pattern of committing any offences of violence there at all. This solicitor needs to spend time having an exceedingly lengthy one-on-one conference with Wangita at his clients new residence.

I hope this isn't the one that his the US last year. It was unusual in that it really nailed small children, causing a lot of severe and lethal respiratory problems.
Hat Tip LGF: Authorities are questioning three men after pulling them from a submersible vessel in the East River in Brooklyn, N.Y., according to reports from ABC affiliate WABC. The men were captured near the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in downtown Brooklyn, near the massive cruise ship the Queen Mary 2, just after 11 a.m. The intent of the three men being held by police remains unclear, but the initial indication is that it did not appear to be terror-related. They have not been identified by police and no charges have been filed.
The orblike vessel, with a circular hatch on the top for entering and exiting, remains moored in the East River in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. It was equipped with oxygen tanks, WABC reported.

Several people are being questioned by police after being stopped apparently attempting to set sail off Brooklyn in a makeshift submarine-type vessel. The handmade wood and fiberglass vessel, at the end of a tow rope tied to an inflatable boat, was spotted by police near the luxury ocean liner docked at the cruise ship terminal in the Buttermilk Channel off Red Hook in Brooklyn. "It was a strange sight," said Coast Guard Petty Officer Angelia Rorison.
Police held the artist, Philip "Duke" Riley, and two other men, both from Rhode Island, for questioning. But there was no indication the trio meant any harm with the replica of the 1776 "Turtle submarine." One of the Rhode Island men claimed he was descendant of David Bushnell, the inventor of the original one-man vessel that inspired the replica, police said. The makeshift sub "is the creative craft of three adventuresome individuals," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a statement. "It does not pose any terrorist threat. ... We can best summarize today's incident as marine mischief."
The brown, egg-shaped wooden vessel was a replica of a submarine used during the American Revolution, Rorison said. The inflatable boat was towing the submarine, authorities said. Rorison said the vessel resembled a diving bell, with a hatch on top, and was about 8 feet long and 4 feet wide. It was propelled by a pedal-operated paddle.
The Coast Guard issued two citations to Riley, 35, of Brooklyn - one for having an unsafe vessel, the other for violating a security zone. The sub came within 200 feet of the bow of the Queen Mary 2, Rorison said. "Basically, the vessel was not safe to sail. It had no lights, no flares. It was not registered," she said. "Instead of safety violations, this could have turned into a search and rescue."
Riley is a sculptor and performance artist whose work "addresses the prospect of residual but forgotten unclaimed frontiers on the edge and inside overdeveloped urban areas, and their unsuspected autonomy," according to his Web site.
The investigation began after a New York police detective noticed the sub and the raft and summoned the Harbor Unit. Rorison said all three men were taken in for questioning by the NYPD.
"All three males are expected to be charged with a number of violations and both vessels will be secured by the Harbor Unit," the NYPD said.

If you think you can take these elephants for a ride, then think twice. Juhi and Anarkali are two she-elephants giving joy rides to tourists at Betla National Park in Jharkhand. However, if forced to work beyond their working hours they simply refuse to budge.
Both the elephants are more than content to take tourists on their backs into the deep forests of the park in the morning hours. But, when the sun is at its peak at noon, they simply refuse to work and take a break.
It is only when shadows lengthen that they are ready to resume. Again, when evening gives way to twilight the two elephants start showing signs of disgruntlement almost as if they want stop work for the day.
A forest official claims that these elephants allow only two rides in the morning. "You cannot force them for a third trip," he said.
Recently, a mahout had tried to force Juhi to go on a third trip and ended up having to pay the price. So enraged was Juhi that she threw the mahout off her back fracturing the poor man's legs. "These she-elephants strictly follow a routine and do not work beyond their regular work schedule. They do not like to work in the afternoon.
If they are forced to work, they react angrily," said the forest official.
These elephants are fed around 70 kg of fodder every day and the State Government has allocated Rs 1.50 lakh for them. This includes the salaries of the mahouts.
Even as these elephants may be giving pleasure rides to tourists there are herds of elephants which are wrecking havoc in other parts of Jharkhand. Often wild elephants invade human habitations and destroy standing crops, houses and attack people.
In the last six years, over 600 persons have been trampled to death by elephants. Experts say that shrinking forest cover is the main reason for such human-animal encounters. More than 70 elephants had also died in the last five years due to different reasons such as electrocution, poaching and disease.

This is basically the BBC version of the newswire story posted by a different Rantburger: Chinese go online to torture, kill corrupt officials.

This isn't subversive at all. After all, these are historical figures long vilified in Chinese history. Whether they were actually corrupt or merely losers in factional court battles is another story. Everyone agrees that corruption is bad. But it is Chinese tradition to impute corruption to disfavored figures.

Tehran Iranian authorities hanged seven people in public on Wednesday, official state media reported while showing images of the men hanging.
Five men were hanged in front of a crowd in the city of Mashad, north-east Iran. State television aired footage of the hanging. The men, all handcuffed, were hanged under a banner which read, "Implementation of justice equals improvement of security. Two other men were executed elsewhere in Mashad, state media reported.
All seven were accused of charges including rape, kidnapping and robbery. Iranian authorities routinely execute dissidents on bogus charges such as armed robbery and drug smuggling.
