A 40-year-old man was charged on Friday with second degree murder after a fellow passenger was stabbed to death aboard a Greyhound bus on the Canadian Prairies and then beheaded. The killing occurred on Wednesday as the Greyhound moved east on the TransCanada Highway near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, and the gruesomeness of the death sent shock waves across the country.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Vince Weiguang Li of Edmonton, Alberta, has been charged with second degree murder. Li looked down during his first court appearance on Friday, nodding his head when asked whether he was using his right to remain silent, according to media reports from Portage la Prairie, a small city about an hour's drive west of the Winnipeg.
Police have not speculated on a motive, but the charge of second degree murder is usually filed when police do not believe the killer planned the murder or targetted the victim in advance.

Original statement of CBC that has been later "modified":
"RCMP announced Friday morning that they have charged Vince Weiguang Li, 40, of Edmonton with second-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear at the Manitoba provincial court in Portage la Prairie. A Chinese Muslim, Li expressed to investigators that his actions were motivated by the Koran."
A Brazilian man accused of killing and dismembering a British teenager and stuffing her torso in a suitcase bragged to his brother in a text message that she was "in the bag," state police said Saturday.
Mohamed D'Ali Carvalho Santos, whom police and his lawyer said has confessed to killing 17-year-old Cara Marie Burke, sent the message to his brother Bruce Lee, who lives with their mother in London, said a police investigator who declined to be identified in line with departmental rules.
The message, written in English and accompanied by a smiling face symbol, read: "the bitch is in the bag," the investigator said. It was found in Santos' cell phone, which he used to photograph Burke's severed head after he allegedly placed it on top of her torso along with a bloody butcher knife, the investigator added.

Mohamed D'Ali has a brother named Bruce Lee? What were his parents thinking?
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said Friday he wants the United States to be tougher on cocaine traffickers extradited from this South American nation.
In the past, Colombian officials have been more concerned that the U.S. would impose penalties tougher than those provided for by Colombian law. But today, Uribe said, extradited drug suspects too often cut deals with U.S. prosecutors for shorter terms and then leave prison "to live like a king."
Washington's staunchest ally in Latin America, Uribe called the sentences "a joke" and said he plans to ask U.S. justice officials for a "severe minimum penalty."

The four Iowans arrested last Friday for attempting to make a citizen's arrest of Karl Rove
Retired Methodist minister, Chet Guinn, 80, and Des Moines Catholic Workers, Ed Bloomer, 61, Mona Shaw 57, and Kirk Brown, 25, were arrested at a Des Moines country club where Rove was appearing at a Republican Fundraiser.
Shaw was the first called before Polk County Fifth Judicial District Associate Judge William Price.

And a judge making sympethetic comments about a crime isn't that called feloney and shouldn't be that a reason for him at the very list being impeched?

If we cannot find a way to correct these injustices in our country, then we are doomed to a fight for survival against the looney left. No culture can stand with this kind of two faced justice for long. The more we ignore it, the worse and broader it spreads, and finally a point of violent return. A final critical mass reaction to eliminate all things we consider non-American norms. If this reaction does not materialize, then we sink into third world corruption at all levels, and capitalism is replaced by theft, hard work and achievement by connections and favoritism. It won't take long for a culture of various races like ours to decline into paramilitary tribal units who control cities or counties or states separate and apart from the rest.
We must sober up and return to the people described by the founding documents. A good start would be to have a media who tell only facts, and omit nothing.

Most arrests were executed by private citizens prior to the eighteen fifies. Police powers are derivative and conditional. The work product of the average cop is a paltry 2 convictions per month and 2 incarcerations (excluding pre trial arrests) per year. Cops unfound as many as 19 out of every 20 substantiable crime complaints that are given to them. That is one reason why cops should be treated as personna non grata in the gun ownership issue. Support your local police only in so far as they act with public purpose. For a safer tomorrow, buy a gun today.

Wouldn't this be grounds to censure a judge somehow? Removal from the case at least.
I'd save it for when the verdict was rendered. Might be grounds to have the guy dismissed if the next judge throws the case out on its ear.

"Support your local police only in so far as they act with public purpose. For a safer tomorrow, buy a gun today."
And what exactly does that have to do with the attempted kidnapping of Mr. Rove, and the judge's apparent approval of the crime, Ho?

I don't think you can overturn a not guilty verdict though. These four "persons" need to explain why they were trying to arrest Rove, otherwise it is unlawful arrest, unlawful detainment, or something similar. Perhaps even first degree aggravated asshatery.
There are many beliefs and superstitions about the eclipse. While in some places it is considered a bad omen, in others it is considered an opportunity for warding off the evil. Some consider an eclipse as the right time for special treatment for a variety of afflictions.
A practitioner of herbal medicines here says that solar eclipse can do wonders for victims of the crippling disease of polio.
At a time when dozens of children in various parts of the country find themselves afflicted with the disease because they were not given polio drops either because of ignorance of their parents or opposition by some extremist elements, the Hakim took some of his young polio patients to the bank of Indus, near Kotri, on Friday when the solar eclipse set in.

We shoulda attacked while they couldn't firebend.
Outside a Muslim shrine in this dusty Pakistani city, a "rat woman" with a tiny head sits on a filthy mattress and takes money from worshippers who cling to an ancient fertility rite. Nadia, 25, is one of hundreds of young microcephalics -- people born with small skulls and protruding noses and ears because of a genetic mutation -- who can be found on the streets of Gujrat, in central Punjab province.
Officials say many of them have been sold off by their families to begging mafias, who exploit a tradition that the "rat children" are sacred offerings to Shah Daula, the shrine's 17th century Sufi saint. "These are God's children. We are proud to look after her," said Ijaz Hussain, the shrine's government-employed custodian, as Nadia shrieked unintelligibly and put coins in a battered wooden box at her side.
According to local legend, infertile women who pray at Shah Daula's shrine will be granted children, but at a terrible price. The first child will be born microcephalic and must be given to the shrine, or else any further children will have the same deformity.

If you pay attention, you can see people looking like this around the USA, nearly always in contexts suggesting they live in long-term care facilities. News about everyday life in Pakistan is always good for stimulating headlines. It's been a slow summer otherwise.
A multi-volume chronology and reference guide set detailing three years of the Mexican Drug War between 2010 and 2012.
Rantburg.com and borderlandbeat.com correspondent and author Chris Covert presents his first non-fiction work detailing
the drug and gang related violence in Mexico.
Chris gives us Mexican press dispatches of drug and gang war violence
over three years, presented in a multi volume set intended to chronicle the death, violence and mayhem which has
dominated Mexico for six years.
Rantburg was assembled from recycled algorithms in the United States of America. No
trees were destroyed in the production of this weblog. We did hurt some, though. Sorry.
