French army quits Mali base ahead of total pullout
[AlAhram] French troops were on Monday handing back a military base in northeastern Mali ahead of a final withdrawal from the Sahel nation, La Belle France's army said, after nine years fighting a jihadist insurgency.

And the UN's emissary there warned that their withdrawal could leave Menaka, where they were based, vulnerable to a jihadist attack.

The departure from the Menaka base "was conducted in good order, safely and in transparent fashion", said French army front man General Pascal Ianni in Gay Paree.

#1  The entire reason they have "terrorists" in the first place is because the government abuse the people and treat them like shit, preferring to steal money and store it outside of the country instead of invest it in their people. Fix this and you fix the terrorism.

But who would want to do that? It's not in anyone's interest. Well, except the people but fuck them amirite? A basket of deplorables.

#3  The Malian government stealing money meant for the people isn't really being "mean", it's more elite sociopathy combined with disdain for the people, but I see what you're trying to get at.

#4  Ah. I thought you meant the terrorists, Pholing Crererong6639. The Tuaregs and such have been smugglers and raiders since time immemorial, as I understand it, and being converted to Islam just added a self-righteous layer of puritanical religious zeal to the exercise.

As far as I can tell, just about everyone is tribal and corrupt in that part of the world, making skimming off the top for the benefit of our tribe necessary to replace what the other guys skimmed off when they were in charge — however long ago that might have been.

But what I think I know is based on what I’ve read here and elsewhere — quite possibly you are responding from personal observation and/or better sources.

Cargo jet with IRGC-linked crew stuck in Argentina due to US sanctions on Iran
[IsraelTimes] Venezuela
...a country in Central America that sits on an enormous pool of oil. Formerly the most prospereous country in the region, it became infested with Commies sniffing almost unlimited wealth. It turned out the wealth wasn't unlimited, the economy collapsed under the clownish Hugo Chavez, the murder rate exceeded places like Honduras and El Salvador. n-owned Boeing 747 with a load of automotive parts and five Iranians onboard unable to depart; local minister says crew have ties to Iranian Quds Force

A jumbo jet-sized mystery has landed in the lap of Argentine officials, who are trying to determine what to do with a Venezuelan-owned Boeing 747 cargo plane with a load of automotive parts and an unusually large crew of 17, including at least five Iranians.

The plane operated by Venezuela’s state-owned Emtrasur cargo line has been stuck since June 6 at Buenos Aires’ main international airport, unable to depart because of US sanctions against Iran
...The nation is noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence...
and suspicions about its crew.

Argentinian Security Minister Aníbal Fernández said Monday that the government and legal authorities are studying the situation.

He said foreign intelligence agencies "advised that part of the crew belonged to companies related to the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guard of Iran," which has been officially listed as a terrorist organization by the US government since 2007.

He also said that the plane’s operators had reported a smaller number of crew members than were actually aboard — an unusually large contingent for a cargo plane. It was carrying parts for an automotive assembly plant, though he did not specify which one.

Until being sold to Emtrasur about a year ago, the plane had been owned by Mahan Air of Iran, a line the US government has sanctioned for allegedly aiding the Quds Force and terrorist activities. Numerous foreign companies over the years have been sanctioned for doing business with Mahan.

A front man for Mahan Air, Hossein Zolanvari, earlier told the state-run IRNA news agency that his company sold the Boeing to a Venezuelan company about a year ago.

"Mentioning Mahan Air in connection with the impounded airplane has aimed at political purposes," he said. He said the plane’s crew also have no connection to Mahan Air.

The plane’s crewmembers have been lodged at a hotel and Fernandez said the Venezuelans are free to leave if they want, while the Iranians can move about in the capital.

Fernandez said the plane had stopped in Paraguay in May. On June 6, it was headed for Ezeiza airport on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, but climatic conditions forced it to stop instead in the city of Cordoba, before finally reaching the Argentine capital, where it attracted the attention of immigration authorities, who confiscated the crew’s passports.

Emtrasur began flying this year, operating out of the Venezuelan military’s Libertador Air Base.

Flight tracking services show the plane also had made stops in earlier months in Mexico and Venezuela.

#1  A normal 747F cargo crew is the Captain, First Officer, Flight Mechanic and Loadmaster (plus a Flight Enginneer if it’s a 100 or 200 series). Usually only 8 seats on the upper deck crew compartment and 5 seats in the cockpit including jump seats. Very unusual to have such a large crew complement

Israeli FM Yair Lapid urges Israelis in Istanbul to leave quickly; several whisked away by Israeli security while Turkey arrests Iranian assassins

Israelis in Istanbul were whisked away as Iranian assassins waited at hotel — report

[IsraelTimes] Tourists warned of immediate threat while out shopping and rushed to airport, report says; Ottoman Turkish intelligence nabs several Iranians suspected of being IRGC operatives

Several Israelis visiting Istanbul were reportedly whisked out of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
last week by Israeli security officials, who were acting on intelligence showing that the visitors were at immediate risk from Iranian assassins.

One woman out visiting a market got a call from a senior Israeli official telling her to not return to her hotel because Iranian assassins were waiting there for her and her spouse, Channel 13 reported Monday.

Instead, a caravan with some 10 Israeli security officers took the couple to the airport, leaving their stuff in the hotel, and then to Israel, where they were probed for clues about the plot against them, the network said.

No further details about the couple were revealed, including whether they were individually targeted for a specific reason or if they were only threatened due to being Israeli. It also was not clear how many people were contacted and told to leave immediately.

According to Channel 13, the government waited until Monday to warn the rest of the public about the imminent threat against Israelis in Turkey out of consideration for local authorities there, who wanted time to deal with the situation. Israel on Monday issued its most severe travel warning for Istanbul over attempts by Iran
...Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979...
to attack Israeli travelers.

Two weeks ago, Channel 12 reported that Israeli security officials called and directly warned more than 100 Israeli citizens in Turkey that they were in Iran’s crosshairs, asking them to return home.

Israel is not currently planning on sending rescue flights for Israelis in Turkey, and many in the country are not planning on fleeing anyway, Channel 13 said. Flight cancellations for those planning trips, however, are starting to pile up.

Despite the warnings, the Walla news site reported that 21 flights with 3,750 passengers departed Israel for Turkey on Monday. Some may be transferring through Turkey; Israeli authorities have said it is still safe for Israelis to have a layover in Istanbul, as long as they stay in the airport.

Separately, the Ynet news site reported on Monday that Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) recently arrested Iranian agents who were planning on carrying out a shooting and kidnapping attack against Israeli tourists in Turkey.

The report did not cite a source, but an Israeli security official told Rooters that Turkey has arrested several people suspected of being operatives of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Ynet said there may be additional Iranian agents on the lam and that authorities’ pursuit of them has not ended.

Ottoman Turkish officials and the Iranian embassy in Ankara did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Israel’s National Security Council on Monday raised the warning for Istanbul to level 4, the highest, meaning Israelis are explicitly told not to visit an area and to leave if they are already there. Countries with the level 4 "high threat" warning include Iraq, Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
, Afghanistan, and Iran.

The authority said it raised the warning level amid "the continuing threat and amid the escalation of Iranian intentions to harm Israelis in Turkey, with an emphasis on Istanbul." Other parts of Turkey remained at a level 3 warning, with recommendations to avoid visiting the country for nonessential reasons.

Israeli security officials reportedly tipped off their Ottoman Turkish counterparts about the plan and asked that they take action to thwart the attack. Hebrew media reports, citing unnamed senior Israeli sources, did not specify the nationality of the alleged agents for Iran, how many were involved, or if any arrests had been made.

Channel 12 said Monday evening that "there are still Iranian cells in the area" and "ongoing cooperation between the Mossad and the Ottoman Turkish [security agencies], impressive cooperation, to thwart this series of [potential] attacks." The unsourced report also said there had been an unspecified number of arrests.

The National Security Council revised its travel warning for Turkey last month to level 3, saying there was a concrete threat to Israelis from "Iranian terrorist operatives" there and in nearby countries.

That warning followed the liquidation of a senior officer in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Col. Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, which Iran blamed on Israel.

Hijab row: Muslim girls seeking admission in Udupi college increases this year
From a few days ago.
[OneIndia] The number of Moslem girls getting enrolled at the college where the Hijab row erupted has increased this year, Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat said on Thursday.

The Government Women's Pre-University College in Udupi was at the centre of a controversy after refusing Moslem girls to wear hijab in the classes in January. There were apprehensions that the number of Moslem girl students will come down due to the controversy, but 40 students have already got admitted to the first year of PU in the college, PTI reported.

In 2005, 674 Moslem girls were enrolled in PU colleges in Udupi district. However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
the number increased to 943 in 2010, 1,169 in 2015, and 1,446 in 2021.

The BJP MLA, who is the president of the college development committee, said that the Moslem students have agreed to remove the hijab inside classrooms. The college recorded good results in the last academic year despite the hijab-related incidents, he claimed.

Six girl students of the college had approached court seeking permission to wear hijab while attending classes. They were insisting on wearing hijab after the Karnataka High Court judgment to adhere to the dress code in institutions. They did not write the final examinations citing the same reason. Though there were apprehensions that the number of Moslem girl students will come down in the wake of the hijab row, 40 students have already got admitted to first year of PU in the college.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Tremulus continued with his speech against Varius and his cohorts, watching as his colleagues dropped off to sleep one by one...
the government first grade college at Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district revoked the suspension of six girls, who were suspended last week for insisting on wearing hijab.

The students have given an undertaking on Wednesday that they will abide by the dress code, college development committee sources said. The students attended classes on Wednesday, the sources added.

Sanjeeva Matandoor, Puttur BJP MLA and chairman of the college development committee, said the students were directed to give the undertaking in writing for revocation of the suspension. The high court in March had dismissed the petitions seeking permission to wear hijab inside the classroom. The prescription of school uniform is only a reasonable restriction, constitutionally permissible which the students cannot object to, the high court had said.

The full bench of the Karnataka High Court upheld the order restricting students from wearing any religious cloths inside educational institutions' premises. The prescription of school uniform is only a reasonable restriction, constitutionally permissible which the students cannot object to, a three-judge High Court bench headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi further said.

Indian Muslim groups urge followers to shun protests over anti-Islam comments
[Dawn] Leaders of prominent Islamic groups and mosques in India appealed to fellow Moslems on Monday to suspend plans for protests against derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) made by two members of the ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party.

The message to avoid big gatherings was circulated after demonstrations took a violent mostly peaceful turn last week, after the police rubbed out two Moslem teenagers while more than 30 people, including police, were maimed.

"It is the duty of every Moslem to stand together when anyone belittles Islam but at the same time it is critical to maintain peace," said Malik Aslam, a senior member of Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
Hind, a Moslem organization that operates in several Indian states.

Early this month, two senior members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party made remarks that offended Moslems. A party spokeswoman made the offending comment in a television debate and a party front man on social media.

The party suspended both of them and said it denounced any insult towards any religion, and police have also filed cases against the two, but that did not stop enraged Moslems taking to the streets in protest.

Police arrested at least 400 suspected rioters during unrest in several states and curfews were imposed and internet services were suspended in some places.

Many Moslems in India have been questioning their place in society since Modi came to power in 2014, playing down his roots in a powerful Hindu-nationalist group to which his party is affiliated.

Critics say his BJP has pursued a confrontational line, promoting the idea that India is a Hindu nation and rounded on "anti-national" opponents, which many Moslems see as an attempt to marginalise them, a community that makes up 13 per cent of India's billion plus population.

Authorities in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday demolished homes of several Moslem men and women part of the protests, drawing condemnation of the state government, led by the BJP, from constitutional experts and rights groups.

Moslems and rights groups interpreted the destruction of the houses as punishment for protesting but state authorities said it was because it was illegally built on public land.

"We are not demolishing houses to stop Moslems from protesting as they have all the right to take to the streets," an aide to the state's hardline Hindu leader told Rooters.

Modi has not commented on the anti-Islam remarks that sparked the protests even as condemnation grew abroad.

Al-Fayyadh: PMF will not be a part of any political conflict
[SHAFAQ] Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces-PMF) will take part in any "political conflict", chairperson Falih al-Fayyadh said on Monday.

In a speech he delivered on the eighth anniversary of the PMF's establishment, al-Fayyadh said, "PMF will not be a part of any political conflict. I am addressing Sayyid Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
...hereditary Iraqi holy man and leader of a political movement in Iraq. He had his hereditary rival, al-Khoei, assassinated only a few hours after the holy rival's appearance out of exile in 2003. "Along with the other forces, the PMF is a protector of Iraq. It will not be a proxy for a political force or soldiers for a government or people. It is a party that preserves peace and security," he elaborated.

Al-Fayyadh stressed that "the PMF will defend the state. We will not allow toppling the state."

Yesterday, Sunday, the leader of the Sadrist movement, Moqtada al-Sadr, called for separating al-Hashd al-Shaabi from the "armed factions" in Iraq.

In a blurb on Monday, the head of the political commission of the Sadrist movement, Ahmed al-Mutayri, said al-Sadr's decision was "a sacrifice to Iraq."

"Al-Sadr has rendered his altruism an eternal life. It is, undoubtedly, a courageous position and a lesson from a leader who is loyal to his people and homeland. It reminds us with his grandfather Imam Hussein's saying 'I would neither surrender to you like a servile, nor concede to you like a slave'."

"Only the greats would make such precious sacrifices for a greater cause. This is not new for the family of al-Sadr," he said.

Al-Khazali: some parties are trying to spread chaos in Iraq
[SHAFAQ] The leader in the Coordination Framework, the villainous-looking Qais al-Khazali
......sinister-looking Iranian stooge, Secretary General of Persian proxy militia Asaib Ahl al-Haq, wannabe Nasrallah......
, revealed that parties working "from behind the keyboard" are trying to spread chaos in Iraq.

Al-Khazali said in a televised interview that some parties were behind hindering the implementation of China's projects in the country, noting that some others worked, during the protests, to hinder the work of the German company Siemens to develop the electricity sector.

"We support the citizens' demands of basic services and right to protest, but solving the country's problems cannot be done through blocking the streets", he noted, "Now that the representatives of the Sadrist bloc have resigned, we entered a new phase."

"We look forward to forming a new government a choosing a Prime Minister who is capable of solving the country's economic problems, as well as other crises like drought", he added.

The leader of al-Fatah coalition, Hadi al-Ameri, called on the supreme religious authority in Najaf to intervene and solve the political crisis in Iraq.

Al-Ameri said in a statement, "The blessed Supreme Marja'iyah, always shows up at the right time to save the day and bring life back to normal."

The President of the Kurdistan region, Nechirvan Barzani, warned of "chaos" in the aftermath of the mass resignation of the Sadrist politicians from the Iraqi parliament, urging the Kurdish parties to join hands.

Barzani tweeted on Monday, "we are watching with concern the latest political updates in Iraq. We hope chaos does not prevail and the parliament represents all the Iraqis."

"I urge all the Kurdish parties to unite," he added.

Loose lips: Three held on suspicion of leaking classified IDF information online
[IsraelTimes] Minor is among suspects who allegedly posted confidential materials on social media for internet cred

Three suspects were arrested for allegedly leaking classified military information on social media, security officials announced Monday.

According to a joint statement from the Israel Defense Forces, Shin Bet security agency and Israel Police, two civilians and one conscripted soldier have been in jug since May 24 over social media posts that apparently contained classified information. The two civilians were indicted on Monday morning at the Lod District Court, while the soldier is to be charged in a military court.

The suspects were accused of working together to release the information to gain credibility or popularity on the internet, and had not been pressured by a bad actor nor acted for monetary gain, according to authorities.

One of the civilian suspects is an intelligence soldier in reserves, and the second is a minor. The adult civilian suspect was charged with obtaining, collecting and holding confidential information, as well as offenses related to transferring such confidential information.

The minor was similarly charged with receiving confidential information from the adult suspect and the soldier, sharing it with acquaintances, and posting some of it publicly.

The IDF said the soldier was suspected of providing and publicizing classified information, and he will be formally charged at a military court following a hearing.

Further details related to the case were barred from publication.

In response, the head of the IDF’s Military Intelligence Directorate, Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, said he would appoint a general to conduct a "thorough" check of the unit’s conduct regarding information security and to formulate recommendations on the matter.

EU seeks Israeli gas as Lebanon protests extraction in disputed field
[An Nahar] European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi were headed to Israel Monday as the EU seeks to wean itself off Russian fossil fuel imports.

Von der Leyen and Draghi are due to hold energy talks in Israel, which has turned from a natural gas importer into an exporter in recent years because of major offshore finds.

Israeli Energy Minister Karine Elharrar and other officials have said their country could help meet EU demand if it can deliver gas from its offshore reserves estimated at nearly 1,000 billion cubic meters, but getting Israeli gas to Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
is fraught with challenges and would require major and long-term infrastructure investments.

Further complicating Israel's offshore gas production is a long-running maritime border dispute with Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...In 2020 Hezbollah blew up a considerable portion of Beirut and many of its inhabitants when its ammonium nitrate facility exploded. They blamed it on... somebody else. It wasn't them though. Trust them on that. And it ain't never coming to trial...
The neighbors technically remain at war but have agreed to U.S.-mediated talks aimed at delineating the border to allow both countries to boost exploration.

Talks broke down last year but Israel has urged Lebanon to re-engage.

Tensions flared this month following a Lebanese claim that Israeli production was taking place in contested waters.

Israel countered that the area was located clearly south of the disputed zone.

chief Jebran Bassil has warned against adopting Line 29 as it may result in "a political, media and perhaps military confrontation."

Bassil said that President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
and Caretaker Prime minister Najib Miqati have agreed on an approach before negotiating with U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein who is due in Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...In 2020 Hezbollah blew up a considerable portion of Beirut and many of its inhabitants when its ammonium nitrate facility exploded. They blamed it on... somebody else. It wasn't them though. Trust them on that. And it ain't never coming to trial...
on Monday.

He added that there is no unified Lebanese stance regarding Hochstein's proposal and that Israel, the U.S. and "those in Lebanon who support Israel" are trying to stop Lebanon from starting extracting its offshore gas.

On another note, Bassil said he won't name Miqati for the PM post as he re-accused him of protecting Central bank Governor Riad Salameh
...Governor of Lebanon'scentral bank, Banque du Liban since April 1993. Salameh was appointed Governor by decree, approved by the Council of Ministers for a renewable term of six years. He was reappointed for four consecutive terms; in 1999, 2005, 2011 and 2017. Salameh chairs the Banque du Liban Central Council, the Higher Banking Commission, the AML/CFT Special Investigation Commission and the Capital Markets Authority. Salameh is a member of the board of governors at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and at the Arab Monetary Fund (AMF). Salameh is the longest-serving central bank governor in the world....
. "On a personal level, I love and respect him," he added.

He named a number of MPs who, according to him, could be appointed to the post, lik Abdel Rahman Al Bizri, Fouad Makhzoumi, Nabil Badr and Rami Fanj. Bassil also mentioned Former President of the U.N. Security Council Nawaf Salam whom he said he does not support politically.

As for the upcoming Cabinet, the FPM chief said he doesn't want to be a minister and that being one in the last government was "a huge political mistake." He also denied having "ever" discussed becoming president with Aoun.

"I only become a candidate for Presidency if I announce it," he said.

Aoun rejects Israel's threats, says Lebanon keen on negotiations
[An Nahar] President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
on Monday said that Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years. It produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. That's three statements. Only the first is subjective....
rejects Israel’s latest threats while stressing that the country is keen on the resumption of talks over sea border demarcation.

"We reject the threats of the Israeli enemy, which is acting in violation of international laws and resolutions," Aoun said, in a meeting in Baabda with reformist MPs Melhem Khalaf, Ibrahim Mneimneh, Rami Fanj, Mark Daou, Waddah al-Sadek, Yassine Yassine and Najat Aoun.

"Lebanon is keen on the return of indirect negotiations with Israel, which stopped after the enemy refused to consider Line 29 a negotiations line," the President added.

Noting that Lebanon had rejected "the Israeli line, or Line 1, and the Hoff Line," Aoun emphasized that the country "will not renounce its right to utilize its oil and gas resources."

"The President is leading the negotiations, and after an agreement is reached, Cabinet will have to approve it and refer it to parliament according to norms, which has not yet happened as to Line 29," Aoun went on to say.

Explaining why drilling has stopped in Lebanon’s offshore block 4, the President said the drilling company "offered unconvincing justifications," noting that "it faced international pressures that forced it to stop drilling."

Responding to a question from the delegation, Aoun pointed out that there is no link between border demarcation and the issue of importing gas and electricity from Egypt and Jordan, nor with the negotiations with the International Monetary Fund."

Geagea, PSP agree on 'unified approach' for govt. formation
[An Nahar] The Lebanese Forces
A Christian political party founded by Bashir Gemayel, who was then bumped off when he was elected president of Leb...
has agreed with the Progressive Socialist Party on a "unified approach" regarding the formation of the new government, LF leader Samir Geagea
...Geagea was imprisoned by the Syrians and their puppets for 11 years in a dungeon in the third basement level of the Lebanese Ministry of Defense. He was released after the Cedar Revolution in 2005...
said on Monday.

"The opposition must unify its efforts in order to stop the ruling camp’s plans," Geagea added, following talks in Maarab with MPs Akram Shehayyeb and Wael Abu Faour of the PSP.

"The delay in the formation of the government is not due to (U.S. mediator Amos) Hochstein’s visit nor due to the formation of the (parliamentary) committees; the reason is that some are trying to seize control of the government to benefit from appointments prior to the presidential term’s expiry," Geagea charged.

"They are trying to consolidate their positions," he added.

He also stressed that "there is only one door for salvation ahead of us, which coordination among the opposition."

"We will leave the naming of a PM candidate to the Strong Republic bloc’s last meeting" before the parliamentary consultations, Geagea went on to say.
