[AlAhram] Authorities in southwest Nigeria's Ondo state said Tuesday that 22 people were killed and 58 others were maimed in a recent attack by button men at a church.
The violence at St. Francis Catholic Church in the city of Owo during Sunday mass was a rare assault in a region usually considered safer than others in the country, and drew widespread international condemnation.
"Hospitals in Owo were filled with the injured, most of who were at death's doors... Unfortunately the corpse count is 22," Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu said in a broadcast, adding that 56 people were still in hospital and two had been discharged.
"The most unfortunate part is the lives of innocent children cut down in their prime and some severely injured by the mindless attackers," he added.
The governor described the button men responsible for the "vile and satanic attack" as "blood thirsty terrorists".
Police had said earlier that the button men hid among the worshippers inside the church and also opened fire on the congregation through the windows from outside.
"Investigations revealed that some of the button men disguised as congregants, while other gunnies who had positioned themselves around the church premises from different directions, fired into the church," the police said in a statement.
Fragments of explosives and three unwent kaboom! improvised bombs were found at the scene.
Father Andrew Abayomi who conducted the service told AFP that some worshippers managed to close the church door and hide in the vestry with others, including children, for about 20 minutes before emerging to scenes of carnage.
Two days later, the anger is still palpable in Owo, the governor said, urging residents not to take the law into their own hands.
"I can assure you that security operatives have been deployed to monitor and restore normality to Owo," he added.
The state has declared a seven-day mourning period and ordered the national flag to be flown at half-mast in Ondo.
Pope Francis ...Argentine liberation theologist, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He was elected pope in 2013. Rather than setting up shop in Avignon, where he belongs, the first Jesuit Pope chose to reside in the Domus Sanctae Marthae guesthouse instead of the papal apartments. He is big on climate change, against consumerism, and in favor of throwing a blanket over homosexual activity (so to speak) within the clergy. He's not real sure about the Resurrection, about Christ's divinity, and a few other things that would have gotten him burned at the stake a few hundred years ago, but he's hot for a certain South American Earth Mother Goddess... was "deeply saddened" by the "horrible attack", his number two, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, wrote in a telegram to the bishop of Ondo. The pope assures "all those who are affected by this unspeakable act of violence of his spiritual closeness", he said.
The attack came a day before Nigeria's ruling APC party started primaries for its candidate in the 2023 election to replace Muhammadu Buhari, who steps down next year after two terms in office.
Security will be a major challenge for whoever wins the race to govern Africa's most populous country and the continent's largest economy.
Nigerian security forces are battling jihadist groups in the northeast, criminal gangs in the northwest and centre and separatist stirrings in the southeast, among other challenges.
There has been no claim of responsibility for Sunday's attack.
A woman who once lived in Kansas has been arrested after federal prosecutors charged her with joining the Islamic State group and leading an all-female battalion of AK-47 wielding militants.
The U.S. Attorney in Alexandria, Virginia, announced Saturday that Allison Fluke-Ekren,
...mother of five, wife of three jihadis — sequentially, they kept getting killed, first the sniper, then the Bangladeshi drone expert, then the failed defender of Raqqa—teacher, home schooler, fluent in Arabic, Turkish, and Spanish. Two of the kids escaped her clutches, getting themselves to safety with her first husband in America...
42, has been charged with providing material support to a terrorist organization.
The criminal complaint was filed under seal back in 2019 but made public Saturday after Fluke-Ekren was brought back to the U.S. Friday to face charges. Her alleged participation in the Islamic State had not been publicly known before Saturday's announcement.
Prosecutors say Fluke-Ekren wanted to recruit operatives to attack a college campus in the U.S. and discussed a terrorist attack on a shopping mall. She told one witness that "she considered any attack that did not kill a large number of individuals to be a waste of resources," according to an FBI affidavit.
Prosecutors say she was a 'fervent believer' of ISIS ideology
That affidavit from FBI Special Agent David Robins also alleges that Fluke-Ekren became leader of an Islamic State unit called "Khatiba Nusaybah" in the Syrian city of Raqqa in late 2016. The all-female unit was trained in the use of AK-47 rifles, grenades and suicide belts.
In all, the affidavit cites observations from six different witnesses, including some who have been charged with terrorism offenses and some who were held at prison camps for former Islamic state members.
A detention memo filed Friday by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Raj Parekh states that Fluke-Ekren even trained children how to use assault rifles, and that at least one witness saw one of Fluke-Ekren's children, approximately 5 or 6 years old, holding a machine gun in the family's home in Syria.
"Fluke-Ekren has been a fervent believer in the radical terrorist ideology of ISIS for many years, having traveled to Syria to commit or support violent jihad. Fluke-Ekren translated her extremist beliefs into action by serving as the appointed leader and organizer of an ISIS military battalion, directly training women and children in the use of AK-47 assault rifles, grenades, and suicide belts to support the Islamic State's murderous aims," Parekh wrote.
FROM KANSAS TO SYRIA
According to court papers, Fluke-Ekren moved to Egypt in 2008 and traveled frequently between Egypt and the U.S. over the next three years. She has not been in the U.S. since 2011.
Prosecutors believe she moved to Syria around 2012. In early 2016, her husband was killed in the Syrian city of Tell Abyad while trying to carry out a terrorist attack, prosecutors said. Later that year, prosecutors say she married a Bangladeshi ISIS member who specialized in drones, but he died in late 2016 or early 2017.
Four months after that man's death, she again remarried a prominent Islamic state leader who was responsible for the Islamic State group's defense of Raqqa.
She told one witness in 2018 that she instructed a person in Syria to tell Fluke-Ekren's Family she was dead so the U.S. government would not try to find her, according to Parekh's memo.
Photos from a family blog called 4KansasKids show her and her children in the years they traveled between Kansas and Egypt, posing at the base of the pyramids in Egypt and playing in the snow in the U.S.
A 2004 article about homeschooling in the Lawrence Journal-World featured Fluke-Ekren and her children. She told the paper she pulled her kids from public school because she was dissatisfied with how her children were performing in public and private schools. Homeschooling allowed her to teach Arabic to her kids.
Court papers do not indicate how she was captured, or how long she was in custody before being turned over to the FBI Friday.
She is scheduled to make an initial appearance at U.S. District Court in Alexandria on Monday, at which time she would likely be appointed an attorney.
A former US schoolteacher who became a high-ranking Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... official and organized an all-female IS military battalion, pleaded guilty Tuesday to supporting a foreign terrorist group, the Justice Department said.
Kansas-born Allison Fluke-Ekren, 42, admitted to engaging in "terrorism-related activities" in Syria, Libya, and Iraq between 2011 and 2019.
"Fluke-Ekren ultimately served as the leader and organizer of an ISIS military battalion, known as the Khatiba Nusaybah, where she trained women on the use of automatic firing AK-47 assault rifles, grenades, and suicide belts," the department said.
Her husband was a member of the murderous MoslemAnsar al-Sharia ...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libya and Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet... group which attacked the US mission in Benghazi, Libya in 2012, and then became a leader of an Islamic State sniper group in Syria.
The department said the two were involved in murderous Moslem activities across the Middle East after they left the United States in 2011.
Fluke-Ekren was apprehended in Syria sometime after the early-2019 territorial defeat of Islamic State, and flown to the United States on January 28.
The court record indicates that her attorneys and the Justice Department spent months negotiating her guilty plea on a single count, supporting a foreign terrorist organization, a charge which brings up to 20 years in prison.
She is scheduled to be sentenced on October 25.
- BORN ON KANSAS FARM -
Fluke-Ekren married a man named Fluke and had two children. They split and she married Volkan Ekren, a Moslem with whom she had at least three more children.
As Fluke-Ekren, she studied at the University of Kansas and then earned a master's degree in teaching from a college in Indiana.
- JOINING LIONS OF ISLAM -
But the Justice department suggested her husband was already involved with radical Islamists at that time.
They moved to Libya in 2011, the year of the Arab Spring uprisings and the beginning of the Libyan civil war.
They were in Benghazi in September 2012 when Ansar al-Sharia attacked the US mission and CIA office there, killing the US ambassador and three others.
Her husband took documents and an electronic device from the fire-charred compound and Fluke-Ekren helped him analyze the contents for the group, the Justice Department said.
They then moved to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... and Syria, where they became deeply involved with Islamic State, even living in the group's djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... , Iraq stronghold for a time.

[OneIndia] A local court on Monday sentenced terror convict Waliullah Khan to death for serial blasts in Varanasi that killed at least 20 people 16 years back.
District Sessions Judge Jitendra Kumar Sinha convicted Khan on Saturday but had held back the pronouncement on the quantum of punishment for the blasts in 2006 at Varanasi's Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple and a railway station.
On Monday, Khan was brought to the district court from Dasna Jail under tight security, overseen by a deputy superintendent of police.
The court also sentenced Khan to life imprisonment on an attempt to murder charge and ordered him to pay fines. The death sentence ...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead... will have to be confirmed by the Allahabad High Court.
A special task force had claimed in 2006 that Khan was linked to Bangladesh-based terror outfit Harkat-ul-Jehad al-Islami
...(HuJI), along with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) one of the Deobandi jihad groups set up by Pakistan’s ISI to drive the Soviets out of Afghanistan, after which the Bangladeshi branch sent Al Qaeda big turban Muhammad Ilyas Kashmiri to lead its Jammu & Kashmir effort. After he met an inquisitive American Predator, some Taliban big turban took over the assignment. HuJI not only lends personnel to LeT and JeM, but provided ministers to the first Taliban government as well...
and was the criminal mastermind behind the blasts.
The first blast took place at 6.15 pm on March 7, 2006 inside the crowded Sankat Mochan temple in the Lanka cop shoppe area. After 15 minutes, a bomb went kaboom! outside the first-class retiring room at Varanasi Cantonment railway station.
At least 20 people were killed and about 100 injured in the two explosions.
The same day, a pressure cooker bomb was also found near the railings of a railway crossing in Dashashwamedh cop shoppe area.
Khan was convicted in two cases lodged under the Indian Penal Code sections of murder and attempt to murder, and under the Explosives Act, district government counsel Rajesh Sharma earlier told PTI.
He was acquitted in a third case due to lack of evidence, he said.
Lawyers in Varanasi had refused to plead the case and the Allahabad High Court transferred it to the Ghaziabad district court.
In all three cases, 121 witnesses were produced before the court.

Acting on specific inputs about the presence of bully boyz in Panipora forest of the Zaloora area in Sopore, security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation there, a police official said.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the hiding bandidosforces of Evil fired at the security personnel, who retaliated, news agency PTI reported.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir zone, Vijay Kumar said one Pak terrorist was killed in the encounter.
In a Twitter post, Kumar said incriminating material, including arms and ammunition, was recovered from the terrorist, and two foreign and one local terrorist managed to escape from the cordon.

[BenarNews] Filipino government forces killed a man identified as the front man for the East Asia branch of the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... krazed killer group during a raid in the southern Philippines, military officials said Tuesday.
Troops and intelligence units carried out the "special operation" on Monday near Datu Saudi Ampatuan, a town in Maguindanao province, that led to "the death of Abdulfatah Omar Alimuden, a.k.a. Abu Huzaifah," the military said in a statement.
"Aside from being the spokesperson of the ISIS-EA, Abu Huzaifah was also in charge of the financial transactions of the Daulah Islamiyah-Philippines to the ISIS Central," the military said, using an acronym for the East Asia branch of Islamic State and also referring to the Filipino branch of IS.
Troops with the Army’s 601st Brigade, 40th Infantry Battalion and military intelligence units took part in the operation. They launched it based on witness information that the suspect was in a vehicle transporting materials to construct a madrassa, according to authorities.
The military’s Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom), based in Zamboanga city, declined to give more information.
"We are limiting the information about it because of an ongoing operation which we cannot divulge to the media. ... I don’t want to pre-empt our follow-up operation. There are key personalities that we are going after," Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario Jr., the WestMinCom chief, told news hounds.
"That’s all we can say for now, that we conducted a military operation and we neutralized Abdulfatah Omar Alimuden, alias Abu Huzaifah," he said.
Rosario could not immediately say how many IS turbans remained in the country.
"I’m not sure as to their number but definitely they are small. Compared to one or two years ago, they’re smaller. ... Our effort is continuing to end this terrorist group," Rosario said of IS in the Philippines.
Alimuden, a native of Maguindanao, had a second role with IS while serving as the East Asia group’s front man, according to Maj. Andrew Linao, the military’s regional front man.
"He was also the finance officer. The suspect appeared to occupy a high position because he was the conduit in the transfer of financial support to the IS and at the same time considered as a high value target," Linao said.
"The neutralization is a big blow to IS especially in this part of the region and the operation prevented the group from wreaking havoc."
In May 2017, hundreds of local pro-IS fighters, backed by cohorts from elsewhere in Asia and from the Middle East, laid siege to the southern Philippine city of Marawi, transforming it into a battle zone. They intended to turn the lakeside town into the IS caliphate in the Southeast Asian region.
The United States and Australia assisted the Filipino army with intelligence information that helped Philippine government forces bomb IS strongholds around the city, finally dislodging the group on Oct. 23, 2017, after a five-month battle.
The bombings destroyed much of the city. Nearly five years later, many parts remain off limits because the military has not recovered unwent kaboom! ordnance.

[NYPOST] An Iranian scientist who was developing top-secret missiles and drones mysteriously died after a dinner party.
Ayoob Entezari reportedly returned home after the party with food poisoning symptoms and later died in the hospital. Seems like instead of infrastructure, Someone (cough, cough) is going after the personnel
Other reports suggested Entezari was assassinated by Mossad, the Israeli national intelligence agency.
The judicial authorities of Yazd Province, however, said Dr. Entezari was just an ordinary employee of an industrial company and died in the hospital due to “illness”.

I've felt bad after returning home from a party too. But not that bad. Sometimes you're better off bringing your own food and drink.

These things do happen. His first few months in Egypt, Mr. Wife alternated between food poisoning and dysentery until he gave up eating meat — even from the fancy restaurants of the Mena House hotel — and then anything washed and uncooked. But his last attack of food poisoning followed a private dinner party hosted by colleague’s wife in Geneva, and his last attack of dysentery probably resulted from breathing the dust after he landed in Mumbai, before he either ate or drank.
Or it could have been poison. Those Persians are as subtle as Byzantines, ‘tis said.
[AlAhram] The Lebanese military arrested 64 migrants as they were trying to set sail from northern Lebanon on Tuesday in an attempt to get to Europe, the army command said.
According to an army statement, the migrants, Lebanese, Syrians and Palestinians, were all detained and were being questioned, except for one pregnant woman who was bleeding and was taken to hospital.
The migrants were apparently taken into custody before their boat was able to set sail. They were apprehended near the Sheikh Znad area, a few kilometres (miles) from the northern city of Tripoli.
The attempt came weeks after a boat carrying more than 60 migrants capsized on April 23 off the coast of Tripoli, Lebanon's second-largest and most impoverished city.
Seven bodies were recovered in that disaster, with 47 people rescued and some still missing. Survivors at the time blamed the Lebanese navy for causing the accident by ramming into the migrants' boat.
For years, Lebanon had been a country where refugees fled, but since its economic meltdown began in late 2019, thousands of people have left the country by sea, seeking a better life in Europe.
Lebanon is a small nation of 6 million people, including 1 million Syrian refugees who fled the war in their country which erupted in 2011. Lebanon is also home to tens of thousands of Palestinians, most of them descendants of people displaced after Israel was created in 1948.
Migrants usually pay thousands of dollars to smugglers who promise to take them on boats to European Union member states such as Cyprus, Greece and Italy.
