[NBSee News] More than 100 people have now reported they got sick with suspected food or something poisoning at a national Food Safety Summit held earlier this month in Baltimore. Nothing says FAIL like a gov't conference.
Maryland state health officials say they still dont know what caused the outbreak of gastroenteritis that left participants suffering symptoms that included diarrhea and nausea. Could be a coincidence.
We are working on evaluating possible exposures and doing testing at the Maryland state public health laboratory to attempt to identify an agent, officials said in a letter to attendees. Caution: This letter should not be opened in an enclosed area.
The conference, held April 8 to 10 at the Baltimore Convention Center, attracted at least 1,300 of the top food safety officials in the nation, including staff from federal agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as businesses such as McDonalds, Tyson and ConAgra Foods.
Health officials have heard back from about 400 of those who attended, so the actual toll of illness might be higher.
City health officials inspected the convention center and its food service provider, Centerplate. The company was issued a violation notice for condensation dripping from one of the two ice machines in the kitchen, a spokesman said. Anyone think to contact The U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) ?

Goin' to Baltimore for a food safety conference... What, was Detroit all booked up?
Any guesses where they'll hold the creative accounting and finance conference? (Vegas, of course.)

[An Nahar] A rebel group in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo ...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material... killed six government soldiers on Wednesday during an attack on the army and the U.N. mission MONUSCO.
The attack was carried out by the Alliance for a Free and Sovereign Congo (APCLS) in the Nyabondo area, around 70 kilometers (45 miles) north of the regional hub Goma in the restive province of North Kivu.
MONUSCO's military front man Felix-Prosper Basse told news hounds in Kinshasa that one member of the U.N. force and three other soldiers were also maimed.
Basse accused the APCLS of opening fire on civilians during the raid, which he said forced hundreds of families to flee their homes and seek MONUSCO protection.
The front man also said the U.N. and Congolese regular forces, who have for months been attempting to clear North Kivu of its myriad rebel groups, had swiftly regained the upper hand.
MONUSCO gunships were brought into action to hunt down the rebels, Basse said.
In mid-March, the U.N.'s special intervention brigade and the Congolese army recaptured the town of Lukweti -- north of Nyabondo -- which the APCLS had used as its headquarters for six years.
The APCLS, believed to number some 500 men, was founded in early 2008, consisting almost exclusively of members of the Hunde ethnic group.
Against a background of land ownership disputes, it battled against the presence of ethnic Tutsis in North Kivu, refusing to recognize their right to Congolese citizenship.
Congolese and U.N. forces are also battling fighters from the ADF-Nalu, a Ugandan Islamist group, and the FDLR, a Rwandan Hutu militia that includes some of the perpetrators of the 1994 genocide.

However, Moscow currently has no plans to retaliate against the "meaningless" sanctions from the West, he said. Sounds a little Nikita Khrushchev-like.
Just saw on the Fox crawl that an uncredited Russian official suggested that we use trampolines to get our astronauts to the ISS. Mr. Obama's inability to spell "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" may have been Freudian?
"...Putin stated that since the US has taken a lead role in resolving the political crisis in Ukraine, it is "telling that they originally were behind this process, but now they just have emerged as leaders" of it.
The "Maidan cookies" [LINK] policy paves the way to a broader crisis, Putin warned, referring to US officials showing up in central Kiev and encouraging protesters during demonstrations.
"It is necessary to understand that the situation is serious and try to find serious approaches to the solution," he said.
Putin said that he has called on Kiev to start an all-Ukrainian dialogue, adding that other countries should not be blamed for the crisis.
'[They should] treat equally the rights of those living in other areas of Ukraine, first of all, I mean, the east and southeast, establish a dialogue, find a compromise," he told journalists while speaking about the measures necessary to put an end to the crisis. "Here's what you need to do; searching for the guilty outside Ukraine is wrong...'"

Careful there Puty, you're starting to sound like liberals who believe everything is racist. Flying low requires skill. When has the WH demonstrated any skill out of stuffing the domestic ballot boxes, a la Chicago?
[An Nahar] Pro-Russian snuffies Wednesday lifted an armed siege of a regional police headquarters in the eastern Ukrainian city of Lugansk after the chief officer agreed to resign, as Kiev said its army is on "full combat alert" against a possible Russian invasion.
A police spokeswoman said the officers inside had refused to give up their weapons to a crowd of some 1,000 pro-Moscow bully boyz led by 30 or so gunnies carrying Kalashnikov assault rifles and grenade-launchers, who had tried to storm the building overnight.
"The chief inspector has resigned. We are awaiting the appointment of his successor. In the meantime, the Lugansk police is functioning normally -- well, as normal as could be expected under the circumstances," the spokeswoman said.
The police HQ was the scene of a tense stand-off late Tuesday between the protesters and the police who had barricaded inside the building in the city of 465,000 people.
Rebels already hold the SBU security services building and the regional administration building.
The protesters tried to smash down the metal door of the headquarters and the police replied with volleys of tear gas and stun grenades.
Late Tuesday, some 30 or so visibly scared police conscripts were led out of the building through a hostile crowd and onto waiting buses. But their higher-paid professional superiors remained inside.
The Western-backed authorities in Kiev have voiced exasperation at what the interim president has called the "inaction" and "treachery" of the police services who have at times stood by while violence raged.
Many coppers in the east -- who receive monthly pay of just $200 -- have done little to stop the rebels taking public buildings. In some cases, they appeared to share the pro-Russian sympathies of the bully boyz they were ordered to square off against.
Kiev has urged civilian volunteers in the east to join territorial brigades to help back the police, but so far there was no sign of that happening.

[DAWN] Four new polio ...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set... cases from North Wazoo and one from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa ... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central... emerged on Tuesday, bringing total number of countrywide affected children to 58, this year.
The Federally Administered Tribal Areas has so far recorded 45 polio cases, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa nine and Sindh four in 2014. Fata and KP together are responsible for 93 per cent of the total cases.
More than 160,000 children risked contracting polio due to their non-vaccination since 2012 when bully boyz banned anti-polio vaccination in the North and South Waziristan Agencies.
No supplementary immunisation activities have been conducted in North and South Waziristan since June 2012.
The four children, who tested positive for polio, didn't receive any dose of the oral anti-polio vaccine. Too bad. Suck it up.

[Ynet] With demolition orders issued against 100 of 170 homes in Diraat Al-Rifaiyya, local authorities plead to be given power to grant building permits.
Except for the elementary school, all of the white stucco buildings in the Paleostinian village of Diraat Al-Rifaiyya, in the southern Hebron hills, are illegal. Piles of rubble, with twisted metal stakes, bake in the unforgiving heat and mark those homes that Israel has demolished.
In one large house, Sheikh Mohammed Mahmoud Al-Adarra, the former mayor and current member of the city council says there are presently demolition orders issued against 100 of the 170 homes in this village of 1,100 residents, including Al-Adarra's own house where he lives with three wives and 16 children.
"We want Israel to stop the demolitions and give us the authority to grant permits to build," Al-Adarra, a burly man with a long black beard, told The Media Line. "They (Israel) hope that if they don't let us build, we'll leave and they can have all the land for the settlements."
Diraat, as it is called, is in Area C, the 60 percent of the West Bank that is under sole Israeli administrative and security control as prescribed in the 1993 Oslo Accords. Here, some 100,000 Paleostinians live among 330,000 Israelis who reside in communities Israel built after acquiring the land in the 1967 war.
A front man for the Israeli Civil Administration, an arm of the Ministry of Defense which supervises planning in the Israeli-controlled areas of the West Bank (Area C), said that in the past year, 373 demolitions have been carried out from a total of 1,288 illegal Paleostinian construction sites. At the same time, he said 147 out of 358 illegal structures in Jewish communities had been demolished.
Israeli activists, though, argue that most of the Jewish-owned structures that were listed as having been demolished were in fact mobile homes placed without government authorization in an attempt to start a new Jewish community. In Diraat, local officials say it's impossible to get a permit.
"Most of us have given up on getting permits," Al-Adarra said. "It costs a lot of money to even apply and then they say no anyway. So we just build and hope that the homes won't get demolished."
Unlike most of the Jewish communities here, Diraat and other Paleostinian villages have no master plans. Without a master plan, it is impossible for the village to build. This week Diraat, backed by several Israeli non-governmental organizations (NGOs) appealed to the Israeli Supreme Court, asking for planning authority in Area C.
"There is discriminatory planning in which Paleostinians have no influence over where they can build legally and where they can't," Rabbi Arik Ascherman of Rabbis for Human Rights, one of the petitioning organizations, argued. "House demolitions don't just destroy buildings -- they destroy families. We see marital tensions, students with straight "A's" whose grades plummet, children who wet their beds, who no longer trust their parents. It has nothing to do with security or law and order, it's all about administration. Paleostinians have no fair chance to build legally."
The court ruled that Paleostinians should have more say in planning in their villages, but said thon the lamr diplomatic issues have also come into play. Earlier this week, the coordinator for government activities in the territories, Maj-Gen. Yoav Mordechai, announced that the government had frozen pending authorizations for master plans for 19 villages. He said the step was taken in retaliation for the Paleostinian Authority's decision to seek membership in United Nations ...the Oyster Bay money pit... agencies and conventions, a move Israel has opposed as unilateral action.
In effect, all Paleostinian building in the West Bank has been halted. At the same time, the dovish Peace Now movement, which opposes Jewish construction in the West Bank, said that Israel approved almost 5,000 new homes during the past nine months, almost half of them in Area C, and the other half in east Jerusalem.
Israeli officials say they are trying to improve life for Paleostinians in Area C.
"In the past years, the Civil Administration has advanced different outline Paleostinian projects, part of them with the cooperation of the Paleostinian Authority and part with the Civil Administration's initiative," Major Guy Inbar, Civil Administration front man told The Media Line.
[Ynet] Iran has canceled a $2.5 billion deal with a Chinese state oil company over what authorities say were delays in fulfilling its contractual obligations, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported Wednesday.
The state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation had signed a contract with Tehran in 2009 to develop the giant Azadegan oil field in the southwest of the OPEC member state.
Iran's oil ministry had given the Chinese company 90 days to meet its obligations or face expulsion from the project. When that did not happen to Iranian satisfaction, IRNA says officials decided to terminate the project.

They wouldn't take them South when I lived in Arizona. They'd take them to the hospital for treatment.
Which they couldn't pay for. And the INS wouldn't come and get them, because if they did, the INS would be on the hook for their care.
So they'd just walk out the door and leave.
It was one of the many benefits they enjoyed being an illegal alien in the US - very, very free health care. Cost the hospital I was at many millions of dollars annually. But it's OK! They vote Democrat!

But I suppose the majority of them, vote Repuglican.
The last statistic I saw was 75% Republican to 25% Democrat, Besoeker. But I can't remember which election that was, my memory having become rather porous over the years.
