[NYPOST] Bernie Madoff, whose $65 billion Ponzi scheme made him one of the world’s most-hated criminals and destroyed even his own family, died Wednesday at the secure federal medical center in Butner, North Carolina, where he was serving a 150-year prison sentence, according to prison officials.
The News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported the 82-year-old scam king, who had been suffering from end-stage kidney disease and other chronic ailments, died of natural causes.
Madoff would have turned 83 on April 29.
His epic stock fraud, which came to light amid the global financial crisis of the late 2000s and remains the biggest in Wall Street history, left more than 37,000 victims in 136 countries in its wake.

[Koffee Company] For many soldiers and athletes, losing a leg would be the absolute worst thing that could ever happen to them.
But retired Army Colonel Patty Collins chooses to look on the bright side.
After all, it didn’t stop her from jumping out of airplanes and deploying with her unit to Afghanistan. And if she hadn’t gotten hit by a car while riding her bicycle to work in July 2006, fractured her leg and had it amputated a short time later, she would never have competed as a triathlete in the 2016 Summer Paralympics or gone mountain biking in Texas with a group of injured veterans led by President George W. Bush.
[NYPOST] Cambodia condemned images published by US media group VICE featuring newly colorized photographs of the Khmer Rouge "killing fields" victims, saying the images were an insult to the dead because some mugshots had been altered to add smiles.
VICE removed the article and photos later on Sunday, saying they did not meet its editorial standards and it was investigating.
The artist behind the work, Matt Loughrey, declined to comment.
In the article published on Friday, Loughrey said his project to colourise images from the notorious Tuol Sleng prison, or S-21, aimed to humanise the 14,000 Cambodians executed and tortured there. Just part of the project to cheapen everything...

Somebody should add smile to the artist's face - with broken beer bottle.

Read somewhere, not that I can find it now, that Loughrey said he did it for the families. As in, at their request. Wouldn't surprise me if that were true, primitive peoples notoriously having terrible taste in portraiture compared to us smart-focusing filter-rocking post-ironic geniuses.

Fpx; Egypt has seized the container ship that last month blocked the Suez Canal..., amid a dispute over how much compensation the country is owed following the weeklong shutdown of the waterway.
The move turns up pressure on Ever Given's Japanese owner to negotiate a settlement that Egyptian authorities are claiming should be roughly $1 billion for damage to the canal and lost business...

Egypt lost no revenue, only delayed, from ships that were backed up. They only lost money on ships that decided to go around Africa and the cost of freeing that cargo ship.
[All Africa] President Félix Tshisekedi has named a new cabinet, two months after the appointment of Prime Minister Sama Lukonde.
This team of 56 ministers - 41 men and 15 women - is his first cabinet after the collapse of the coalition with former president Joseph Kabila's 'Front Commun pour le Congo' (FCC). The new team that President Tshisekedi calls "the warriors" is tasked with reviving the Congolese economy. It is also expected to address insecurity, particularly in the eastern provinces of the DRC.
The new cabinet will have to be vetted by the National Assembly before Prime Minister Lukonde presents his government's programmes. He said his government's priorities will be security, health, education, justice, agriculture, fisheries and livestock, economy, the electoral process, infrastructure, and the digital economy.

a pandemic program which worked with farmers, farm associations and food distributors to purchase unneeded food that would otherwise be thrown away
That is, food grown and/or pre-purchased for the restaurants, hotels, cruise ships, etc. kitchens which were shut down.
Doesn't really say why, just that the funds will be redirected to food stamps, because $Billions.
Not necessary in states like Florida and Texas (or those who didn't close) which are now open. Probably fuggs the Ag Community in lock-and-chain states like Michigan and California.
[Koffee Company] KYIV, Ukraine — Should Russia invade, a national network of Ukrainian irregular military units is prepared to wage a protracted, guerrilla resistance campaign.
Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces comprise about 100,000 reservists and civilian volunteers assigned to 25 brigades scattered across the country — at least one unit is assigned to each of Ukraine’s 24 regions, or oblasts. These unconventional forces fall under the Ukrainian military’s chain of command.
With the Russian military massing on its frontiers, Ukraine has activated the Territorial Defense Forces in its southern regions. According to Ukraine’s armed forces, those units conducted exercises along the Black Sea coastline and the border with Russian-occupied Crimea to resist an amphibious landing force and "to combat subversive-reconnaissance groups and other hostile forces and irregular armed formations."
Ukrainian Operational Command South — which includes the Vinnytsya, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Odesa, and Kherson oblasts — controls five territorial defense brigades. Each of those units is tasked to defend its respective regional territory and impede the advance of a Russian invasion force so that regular Ukrainian units have more time to maneuver. In theory, the territorial defense brigades can mobilize for combat within one to two days.

Seems like they did this during the Crimea snatch.
IIRC, only one commander ended up being effective and they went and arrested him for conducting war in the Olde Style, instead of the new way of giving up their location by dinking on their phones then catching artillery.
Not too well, especially since Biden won't send them any anti-tank missiles.

I think Russia has claimed that their occupation of the Crimea and eastern Ukraine is to protect ethnic Russians.
As bad as this claim is, there is little ethnic Russian presence in central and western Ukraine.

Well is the Ukraine going to conduct a tactical, strategic , or phycological campaign against the Russian or a combo job of all three. Photo's of dead children can hurt diplomatic relations for Russia, How much pain are the Russians willing to put up with for a warm water port ?

Theoryis to stop the fire while it is small so it doesn't get too big to stop later.
Reality is there is no threat to Western Europe, or to Eastern Europe, but only an internecine former USSR squabble between Russia and another one of the former Soviet republics.
This one happens to be roughly 40/60 Russian and non-Russian (though Slavic and 100% Russian-speaking along with the native tongue that's almost indistinguishable from Russian).
If we intervene in this affair in Russia's backyard, we will have reached the ultimate in globalist hubristic stupidity.
And Putin will wrong-foot us again, just as he wrong-footed Soetoro the Fool again and again and again.
[AlAhram] The United States will deploy an additional 500 troops to Germany, Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said during a visit to Berlin, marking a reversal of former President Donald Trump ...His ancestors didn't own any slaves... 's plans to withdraw about 12,000 troops from the NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis.... country.
A meaningless reversal, but a deliberate insult nonetheless.
"We have ceased planning (for a troop drawdown)," Austin said at a news conference with his German counterpart Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer on Tuesday.
"I think our assignment of an additional 500 troops speaks to the level of our partnership and our commitment to NATO," he added.
[Washington Examiner] The Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide families with up to $9,000 to cover part of the costs to hold funerals for families whose loved ones died of COVID-19.
The agency tasked with natural disaster response began accepting applications for financial assistance from families on Monday. If selected to receive the funds, families will have to provide a record of funeral expenses and the deceased person’s death certificate that confirms they died of COVID-19. The maximum amount that a family can be reimbursed for a single funeral is $9,000.

Why? Why not pay for funerals for everyone? It would be more logical. Though not as logical as paying for no one - it's a discretionary expense, at least for the most part.

"I've died twice now. In addition to that smooth $18k, I also now get three mail-in ballots which, as you know, each get me a $1k pre-paid credit card when the ward heeler comes by and certifies."
[Examiner via Right Scoop] The Pentagon has developed an actual microchip that can detect COVID-19 after it’s implanted underneath the skin:
DC EXAMINER — Pentagon researchers developed a microchip that can be inserted under the skin to detect COVID-19 infection before a person begins showing symptoms.
"It’s a sensor," said Dr. Matt Hepburn, an infectious disease physician and retired Army colonel. "That tiny green thing in there, you put it underneath your skin, and what that tells you is that there are chemical reactions going on inside the body, and that signal means you are going to have symptoms tomorrow."
The technology was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a top-secret unit launched during the Cold War era that studies emerging technologies and how they can be applied for use in the military.
The chip is already in use inside the Pentagon:
H
epburn said that the microchip has only been used inside the Defense Department and can detect a COVID-19 infection before an individual has the potential to spread the disease to other service members.
"We challenge the research community to come up with solutions that may sound like science fiction," Hepburn said.
Hepburn likened the microchip to a "check engine" light on a car, alerting the user of a positive COVID-19 infection and directing him or her to take a test to confirm the result.
"We can have that information in three to five minutes," Hepburn said. "As you truncate that time, as you diagnose and treat, what you do is you stop the infection in its tracks."
DARPA scientists believe the technology will be critical to stopping outbreaks among service members, who often are forced to be in tight quarters together for long periods of time.
A microchip which detects viral infections and goes under the skin? This is all our authoritarian government leaders need keep controlling people. This makes the vaccine passport look like child’s play.
