[American Thinker] Last year, without even bothering to interview him, the Capitol Police instantly exonerated Lt. Michael Byrd, the man who shot an unarmed Ashli Babbitt in cold blood. Now we've learned that the Washington, D.C. police force's Bureau of Internal Affairs has exonerated a police officer who beat an unconscious woman to death. You know, as I do, that if the two dead women had been Black leftists, instead of White Trump supporters, the outcome of these two investigations would have been very different.
American Thinker has already covered the travesty of Byrd's exoneration, so I won't return to that subject. This post concerns the death of Rosanne Boyland of Kennesaw, Georgia. As you may recall, when the media first reported on her death, they stated that she died of an amphetamine overdose, implying that she was a junkie. Meanwhile, D.C. refused to give her family the autopsy results. Even Vanity Fair, which did manage to get a copy of the autopsy results, eventually conceded that the finding was later clarified to say she died of an "accidental" Adderall overdose, again implying a drug problem. In fact, according to her father, Boyland has safely taken the prescription medicine for a decade.
However, the autopsy seems to have left out something interesting: a Metro police officer brutally beat Boyland with both a steel baton and a large wooden stick:

His attorney filed for a change of venue for his trial and Brooks remains in jail on a $5million bond
Last month, prosecutors presented 'ample' evidence to show Brooks committed the felonies
His lawyer admitted Brooks was high during the killing and refused to look at the victims photos when he was interrogated by police
'In fact, he put his head down, he'd turn his head away from the photos and the videos,' she said at the court hearing on January 14
Brooks is accused of killing six and injuring dozens when he drove his SUV into a parade

Steve Bannon financier Guo Wengui was ordered Wednesday to pay contempt of court fines for moving his yacht out of US waters to avoid debt collection
According to the NY Supreme Court, the Chinese billionaire, a fugitive from the US government, hid billions of dollars' worth of assets on the $28million vessel
Multiple restraining orders had barred Guo, 51, from relocating or selling the boat or any other assets, a stipulation he ignored by hiding it in the Bahamas
Guo is required to pay the $134m within five days, or risk arrest, the court says
[PJ] Since the first of the year, 55 U.S. police officers have been shot in the line of duty, with five killed. "Enough is enough!" National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) President Patrick Yoes said in a statement.
According to CNN, 15 officers have been wounded in the last 24 hours, including nine officers in Phoenix. The incident in Phoenix involved police responding to an emergency call of a woman who had been shot. When a police officer arrived, a man invited him inside, only to turn his gun on him and open fire. The injured officer limped away and called for backup.
Two teen brothers with a raft of prior arrests were ordered held without bail Saturday in the shooting of an off-duty police officer who was attending a memorial service in West Harlem.
Paris Francis, 17, and Prince Francis, 16, of Manhattanville, were in Manhattan Criminal Court to face the music following their Thursday arrests.
Paris Francis is alleged to be the triggerman in the Feb. 5 shooting of veteran policer officer Robert Manley, prosecutors said.
Manley, an off-duty NYPD housing cop, was shot in the foot about 4:30 p.m. after he attended a memorial service for a community member at the Manhattanville Houses in West Harlem.
The Francis brothers were caught on video in the area of the shooting and the footage shows Paris, dressed in a black jacket with a Canada Goose logo on the left arm, with the gun, prosecutors said in court.

[PoliceMag] A Chicago woman has been charged with vandalizing a memorial to fallen Chicago Police Officer Ella French last August. French was shot and killed Aug. 7 during a traffic stop.
Illinois State Police announced Wednesday that Anna Kochakian, 26, has been charged with criminal damage to property for defacement of a police memorial – a Class 4 felony, CBS Chicago reports.
Videos on Twitter, which were posted to a page that has since been deleted, show someone attempting to knock over a memorial inside the Thompson Center with a “Back The Blue” wreath and photo of Officer French. That incident occurred one day after the murdered officer was laid to rest.
When the attempt to knock over the memorial was unsuccessful, the person filming grabbed the photo of French from the stand and balled it up while walking away.
On Wednesday, after a complete investigation, state police obtained an arrest warrant for Kochakian.
The offender was arrested using the handcuffs of Officer Carlos Yanez Jr., her partner. This was a moment of justice for Ella, her family, the Chicago Police Department and all those who knew and loved Ella. pic.twitter.com/9RIoKIFRCG

[RIA Novosti] Presidents of Russia and the United States Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden spoke on the phone for more than an hour, the nature of the conversation was balanced and business-like, said Yury Ushakov, an aide to the Russian leader.
"The conversation took place in an environment of unprecedented hysteria by US officials about Russia's supposedly imminent invasion of Ukraine," the official added.
According to him, "the hysteria has reached its climax."
Ushakov noted that the Americans are artificially escalating the situation, naming "the dates of this invasion," and at the same time, together with the allies, are "pumping up the military muscles of Ukraine."
"To the accompaniment of allegations of an invasion, prerequisites are being created for possibly provocative actions by the Ukrainian armed forces. This is how we view this situation," the presidential aide said.
Biden, as expected, mentioned possible anti-Russian sanctions in the context of the tense situation around Ukraine, but there was no emphasis on this issue.
In turn, Putin reminded his interlocutor of the history of the development of relations between Moscow , Washington and NATO.
"The President of Russia, in particular, noted that during the years of the Cold War, the Soviet Union and the United States were, of course, one hundred percent adversaries.
And, for example, in the 1990s, we seemed to be friends. But even then, the United States and NATO pursued a far from constructive line towards Russia, because it was then that the practical expansion of the scope of NATO's activities began, it was then that new members were admitted, and the alliance approached the borders of Russia," the presidential aide added.
In the conversation, Putin noted that "our two great powers are still competitors, but must do everything to maintain stability" and security throughout the world.
The Russian leader also pointed out that the West is not trying to get Ukraine to implement the Minsk agreements. At the same time, tensions have been escalated around the movement of Russian troops across Russian territory for several months, and in recent days and hours the situation has been brought to the point of absurdity; it is not clear why this should be done.
Moscow calls for doing everything possible to "avoid the worst-case scenario in the context of the current situation around Ukraine," Ushakov concluded.
The conversation between Putin and Biden took place against the backdrop of regular statements by Western politicians and journalists about Moscow's imaginary plans to escalate the situation around Ukraine.
Thus, the Politico newspaper, citing "informed sources", wrote that the US President, at a meeting with the leaders of Western countries, the European Union and NATO, which took place the night before via video link, called the date of Russia's "invasion" of Ukraine on February 16.
Under this pretext, NATO is strengthening its presence at the Russian borders. So, it became known that the United States is additionally transferring 3,000 troops to Poland and sent four destroyers to Europe.
Russia rejects all the plans attributed to it to escalate the conflict in Ukraine and reminds that Kiev does not comply with the Minsk agreements: the Ukrainian authorities have concentrated half of the army’s personnel near the line of contact and fire at the militias with banned weapons.
The Kremlin and the Foreign Ministry have repeatedly noted that the goal of the "aggression" stories is to build up a foreign group near the Russian borders. They also explained that the main reason for the escalation of the situation is the actions of the United States and NATO, which are pumping Ukraine with weapons, thereby pushing it towards military adventures.
As the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov emphasized , the information hysteria of the West is accompanied by a large number of lies and fakes.

There has to be a form of visual evidence to support the way people are giving Jojo things to say and ask and who they are? I cannot imagine that most of the conversation involved any original, cogent thought on Biden's part, but unlike the translator games where there is a third party to modify the worst screw-up, Putie speaks excellent English and can clearly discern script reading from spontaneous conversation.

[Korrespondent] Today, on February 12, in Kalanchak, Kherson region, special tactical exercises of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were held, which were observed by the President of Ukraine. Vladimir Zelensky posted a photo on his Telegram channel.
The President at the briefing urged the Ukrainians to remain calm.
"We are not afraid of anyone and we are not panicking. We are conducting training and keeping the situation under control. Everything will be Ukraine!" Zelensky signed the photo.
The exercises worked out the response to "illegal crossings" of checkpoints and the "liquidation" of armed groups. Which is similar to the exercises the Russian Army does every six months or so, all over Russia

[NewsFrontInfo] The press service of the Southern Military District reported that battalion tactical exercises of a group of the Russian military base of the Southern Military District began at the Tsabal training ground in the mountainous region of Abkhazia.
During the march, as part of a mechanized column, motorized rifle units of the Southern Military District repelled the attacks of sabotage groups of a mock enemy.
In total, 1,500 military personnel and about 200 pieces of military equipment, including Dozor reconnaissance vehicles, Akatsiya self-propelled artillery mounts, and unmanned aerial vehicles, are taking part in the exercises.
In addition, the BTR-82A armored personnel carrier and regular small arms, including RPG-7D and AGS-17 grenade launchers, were used in the firing.
"The purpose of the bilateral battalion tactical exercise is to test the readiness of motorized rifle units of the Southern Military District to perform combat missions, improve their combat coherence in the preparation and conduct of defensive operations, as well as train command personnel to make non-standard decisions in the course of performing combat missions using modern combat experience," noted in the department.

[REGNUM] Russian President Vladimir Putin , during a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron , announced the unwillingness of Western countries to push Kiev to implement the Minsk agreements. This was reported on February 12 on the Kremlin website.
"The unwillingness of the leading Western countries to push the Kiev authorities to implement the Minsk agreements was also emphasized, which was once again manifested in the unsuccessful round of consultations of political advisers to the leaders of the Normandy format states held on February 10 in Berlin," the message says.
As REGNUM reported , the Ukrainian topic, as well as the issue of security guarantees that Moscow is seeking from NATO, were discussed on February 7 during a lengthy meeting between Putin and Macron in the Kremlin.
[REGNUM] Russia essentially received no response from the United States on strategic security guarantees, Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov said on February 12.
"In fact, neither on the expansion of NATO, nor on the non-deployment of strike forces on Ukrainian territory, nor on the return to the configuration of the alliance’s forces to the state of 1997, when Russia’s founding act of NATO was signed, did we receive an answer in essence," he said.
As REGNUM reported earlier, Ushakov said earlier that United States President Joe Biden, during a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, mentioned possible sanctions against Moscow against the backdrop of the situation around Ukraine.
[JPost] Russia's defense ministry summoned the US military attache on Saturday after complaining of an incident in which it said a US submarine violated its territorial waters
A Russian naval vessel chased away a US submarine in Russian waters in the Pacific after the submarine ignored a Russian order to surface, Interfax news agency cited the defense ministry as saying on Saturday.
The Russian ministry called in the US defense attache after complaining that the submarine had entered its waters, the RIA news agency reported. Tensions between Moscow and Washington are already high over a Russian military buildup near Ukraine.
The submarine was spotted near the Kuril islands early on Saturday as Russia was conducting naval exercises with its Pacific Fleet and it was ordered to surface immediately, the Russian ministry was quoted as saying.
It said the order was ignored by the US submarine's crew, leading the crew of Russia's Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate to use unspecified "corresponding means" to make the vessel leave.
"The US submarine ... left Russian territorial waters at maximum speed," the defense ministry was quoted as saying.
There was no immediate comment from the United States.
Russia's defense minister spoke by phone with his US counterpart on Saturday as the United States and other Western nations warned that war in Ukraine could ignite at any moment. US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin started a call later in the day

For weeks now the Biden administration, hopelessly compromised and looking at political annihilation in the coming midterm elections, has flirted with disaster. Desperate to regain credibility and to counter the obvious impotence of the man in the White House, Joe’s mandarins have made all sorts of vaguely threatening pronouncements regarding Ukraine and shoved forward a wide range of U.S. military assets into Eastern Europe.
The obvious danger of stumbling into war has been disregarded. Men who have never heard a shot fired in anger, never put their lives on the line, and have no earthly idea what strategy they are pursuing have put the whole world in danger. We may be about to pay the price for that incompetence.
...This is the way wars start. All it will take will be one exchange of fire. An aircraft will go down. A ship will be torpedoed. Lives will be lost. The clamor to hit back will begin. The men who run the world’s biggest defense contractors will join the push. The prospect of endless profits from another conflict will be too great to resist.
War is an ugly, brutal thing. It ought not to be entered into lightly or without sober reflection. The price for imprudence and incompetence will not be paid by the men and women behind desks in DC. It will be paid, as always, by the young men and women of our small towns, farms and blue-collar neighborhoods.
We are adrift in perilous waters with a senile empty suit of a President who sold his soul to Communist China long ago at the helm. He is surrounded by spineless incompetents who now seek to pose as men of strength and project power. There could hardly be a more dangerous combination.
We will do well to come through this without catastrophe. We stand on the precipice of war.

Seems that a US Virginia-class sub (a fast attack boat) was shadowing a Russian naval exercise when it was detected by Marshal Shaposhnikov, an Udaloy-class anti-submarine frigate. When the Russians encouraged the sub to surface, it deployed a decoy and left the area.
What are the chances a Russian ship could detect a US submarine ?
The Virginia class should be pretty quiet as long as sneakiness is the order of the day and no one is distracted running Pronoun Drills.
We shouldn't be too surprised a sub-hunter found a sub. It would certainly show up if you drove over it with active sonar.
Lately, the USN has been experiencing ship-handling issues. My theory of the crime, based on absolutely no evidence whatsoever, is the sub had issues maintaining periscope depth and breached the surface which reduced its stealthiness.
We put seamen in the Russian waters?
The Ghost of Pappy smiles.

[VK] In Ukraine, they showed new photos of work on fine-tuning the T-64 to the level of T-64BM2 and told new data.
It is in the T-64BM2 that the Command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine sees a tank for the near future.
It is already planned to install a single information panel for the driver instead of traditional sensors on the tank: all indicators of the tank’s operation such as oil-fuel-temperature-speed will be displayed on the screen.
In addition, it will also display the view from the reverse cameras and a map with GPS.
Of course, everything that has recently been installed during repairs on linear T-64BV type thermal imagers, modern communications equipment will also be installed on the tank.
It is expected that from 2022 all tanks that will be supplied to the Kharkov Armored Plant will be brought up to the level of T-64bm2.
“I say “expected” because there is no contract for the T-64BM2 yet, but contracts for the repair of the T-64BV are also no longer being extended, because the BM2 is expected,” says Alexei Bobovnikov.
👉🏻Recall that the T-64BM2 tank received a 1000-horsepower 6TD engine. The engine compartment was completely redesigned.
The modernization was carried out in close cooperation with the Kharkov Armored Plant, KMDB and the Design and Technology Center of the Ministry of Defense.
👉🏻The tank is equipped with a 1G46 sight and other modern components of the fire control system.
👉🏻A thermal imaging matrix was installed in the sight, which made it possible to expand the target recognition range to 3 km at night.
👉🏻A digital secure communication and navigation system has been installed.
👉🏻For protection, he received dynamic protection "Knife" and anti-cumulative grilles at the back.
At the beginning of the year, it was reported that the State Enterprise "Kharkov Armored Plant" mastered the overhaul of this tank.
The first batch of these modernized vehicles has already been transferred to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

[DW] The messaging app Telegram has blocked dozens of channels in Germany, including an account belonging to a prominent conspiracy theorist, the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported on Friday.
The move comes amid increased pressure from the German government and authorities, who have expressed concern over groups using the app to spread disinformation about the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague) ...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men... pandemic and organize protests that have turned violent mostly peaceful.
It is "the first time" Telegram has taken action against the spread of "hate and incitement" on its platform in Germany, the paper noted.
One of the Telegram channels that was closed down belonged to conspiracy theorist and former vegan chef Attila Hildmann, who spread antisemitic messages as well as disinformation about the coronavirus pandemic to his followers on the platform, the paper reported.
It was not immediately clear which other channels were affected.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said she would continue her push to get Telegram to cooperate with German laws.
"Telegram must no longer be an accelerant for right-wing Death Eaters, conspiracy theorists and other agitators. Death threats and other dangerous messages of hate must be deleted and have legal consequences," she said.
Under German law, social media giants must remove illegal content — such as hate speech and death threats — or face large fines. Platforms such as Telegram, however, have been harder to pin down than more mainstream sites like Twitter and Facebook.
GROWING EXTREMISM CONCERNS
Telegram, which is based in Dubai, is a popular app which provides encrypted messaging and has so far largely evaded regulatory oversight.
Experts in Germany have increasingly voiced concerns that the app is becoming a hotbed for Death Eater activity and radicalization. Far-right and Death Eater groups have increasingly turned to alternative platforms like Telegram after being kicked off major social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
[Twitchy] Apparently Toronto police got word that Freedom Convoy protesters were headed to their city, and after possible consultation with Justin Trudeau, the authorities decided to prevent truckers from blocking traffic by... doing it themselves: Well at least the truckers can't block the highway. Classic case of shooting themselves in the foot.
[DW] Protesters blocking a major bridge connecting Canada and the US were ordered to clear the area by a court ruling.
Canadian police on Saturday arrived at the scene of a major protest that had disrupted Canada-US trade, as several trucks blocked a key border crossing between the two nations.
The move comes after a court order had mandated that the demonstrators could not continue to block the Ambassador Bridge in the city of Windsor, Canada.
TWO WEEKS OF PROTESTS
Demonstrators are against Canada's vaccine mandates and other coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague) ...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men... restrictions. But they have also directed their ire toward Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ...hereditary prime minister of the same country that once produced McKenzie King... . In turn, Trudeau has referred to them as a "fringe'' of Canadian society.
But what began as a small, spontaneous act of collective action has lasted more than two weeks, with thousands of people taking part. Protesters at the Ambassador Bridge had shuttered traffic between the US and Canada for five days, threatening bilateral commerce.
Canadian leaders denounced the protesters and their actions.
"The illegal blockades are impacting trade, supply chains & manufacturing. They're hurting Canadian families, workers & businesses. Glad to see the Windsor Police & its policing partners commenced enforcement at and near the Ambassador Bridge," Federal Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne tweeted Saturday.
"These blockades must stop,'' he added.
CONVOY HAS INSPIRED OTHERS ABROAD
Canada's protests have reverberated outside the country, in La Belle France and New Zealand.
On Saturday, police in Gay Paree intercepted at least 500 vehicles attempting to enter the city, in defiance of a police order, to participate in a "freedom convoy." Like the Canada convoy, French protesters are also against stricter rules affecting those who have either not been vaccinated or fully vaccinated.
A convoy of motorists in the US is planning to gather at the waterfront in Port Huron, Michigan, in support of protesters in Canada. Another US group said it would converge this weekend at the Peace Bridge, also a US-Canadian border crossing in Buffalo, New York.
The Ambassador Bridge is the busiest US-Canadian border crossing, carrying 25% of all trade between the two nations.
"We urge all demonstrators to act lawfully & peacefully," Windsor Police said in a Twitter post, asking residents to avoid the areas linked to the demonstrations.
Police in black uniforms with yellow vests rushed behind the protesters' vehicles and formed a line across the bridge entrance.
The number of protesters had decreased from about 200 on Friday night to roughly two dozen early Saturday, as many chose to leave the area after the court order was issued.

[Baltimore Banner] The Baltimore County funeral director worried more with each passing day. The morgue still hadn’t released the young woman’s body for cremation. I blame FEMA body snatchers and computerized toe tag discrepancies.
Her father wanted to see her, just to say goodbye. But nature was already at work. A body refrigerated below 40 degrees can show signs of decomposition after one week.
The funeral director called the morgue every two days. Always the same answer: "Not on today’s schedule." Please be patient. The experiments and tissue harvesting are not yet completed.
More than 200 bodies are awaiting autopsies by doctors at Maryland’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the agency located in downtown Baltimore responsible for investigating deaths statewide. The unprecedented backlog is growing by the day and filling up the morgue refrigerators. Local funeral directors say it’s also worsening the anguish for grieving families, some of whom have been forced to postpone funerals and missed the chance to say goodbye to a loved one. We anticipate a full release shortly after the midterm election.
Feb 11 (Reuters) - Raytheon Technologies Corp (RTX.N) said it is a target of a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into hiring practices in the aerospace industry, the U.S. aerospace and defense firm said in a filing on Friday.
No criminal charge has been filed against the company or its affiliates, the company added. This unfortunate affair can obviously be handled out of court. Massive new contract extensions will soften the blow. It's a little game we play where both sides win.
Raytheon had received a subpoena in late 2019 focused on alleged hiring restrictions between Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of Raytheon, and some of its suppliers of outsourced engineering services. It also included requests regarding Collins Aerospace.
A former Pratt & Whitney employee and some other employees of outsourced engineering suppliers were charged in December for restricting the hiring and recruiting of engineers and skilled laborers in a way that violated antitrust laws. Only the unqualified and WOKE certified need apply.
"Raytheon Technologies is committed to complying with applicable state and federal laws and is cooperating fully with the government's inquiry," the company said in a statement.

Yale University public health professor Harvey Risch has accused the feds of relying on "fake studies" that conflate two very different study populations — hospitalized and outpatient — to portray hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin as ineffective and dangerous.
The feds have consistently messed with the data on both sides: they portrayed the mRNA gene therapy as both safe and effective for all populations when it was and us neither safe nor effective for anyone who's not elderly and/or obese or suffering serious comorbidities. And they have spread and and continue to spread, illegally and outrageously, scurrilous lies about alternative early treatments such as HCQ and ivermectin, which are not just perfectly harmless but also"essential medicines" per WHO. This is a blatant violation of the law, a crime for which they should be prosecuted.
Even now these assholes are desperately trying to find a way to prove that their "boosters" - ie the ridiculous repeated application of the vaccine precisely because it doesn't work - that these failed vaccines are safe and effective for infants and toddlers. Of course, they're NOT safe and effective, which is why we keep hearing about these mysterious "delays" in releasing them.
These people are sick mofos who are endangering the lives and health of our children.

Shafaq News/ Iraqi security forces captured a contract killer charged with more than 20 killings and homicides in the governorate of Maysan earlier today, Saturday.
The Security Media Cell (SMC) said that the arrestee was caught in a raid orchestrated by the govenorate's Operations Commandin al-Mashrah area.
A source told Shafaq News Agency that the arrestee is wanted for long list of charges in accordance with Article 4/Terrorism, 406/Homicide, and 421/Abduction.
The arrestee, Hasan Trad Ghleim from the Sneid tribe, has more than 20 assassinations and 29 arrest warrants in his record.
The source said that Ghleim assassinated Judge Ahmed Faisal al-Saedi who refused to cooperate with him, referred his narcotics case the criminal court, and issued an arrest warrant against him.
He also killed Lieutenant Hosam al-Alyawi who ordered a raid to his headquarters and attempted to arrest him for his involvement in the killing of the educational supervisor Hamid Nehme. Nehme refused to withdraw a case he filed against Ghleim.
The list of Ghleim's victims includes more than 20 persons, including members of the Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement and al-Salam companies, in addition to civil activists, tribal figures, and civilians.
Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq issued earlier today a statement refuting what was circulated by social media users about Ghleim's affiliation to the Iranian-backed movement.
The movement said it endorses the security forces in their quest to fight crime and urged them to execute a full swing campaign against the criminals.

[AlAham] Myanmar's junta on Saturday announced an amnesty for more than 800 prisoners, as it held a parade and show of force in the capital to mark the country's Union Day.
The country has been in turmoil since last year's coup, with mass protests and a subsequent military crackdown that has killed more than 1,500 civilians, according to the UN's human rights One man's rights are another man's existential threat. office.
Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing issued the "pardon order" -- a regular feature of major holidays in the country -- for 814 prisoners, state media said, marking the 75th Union Day.
The annual holiday commemorates an agreement between independence hero Aung San and several ethnic groups to form a Union of Burma independent of British rule.
Those given amnesty will be mostly from prisons in commercial hub Yangon, junta spokesperson Zaw Min Tun told AFP.
He did not say whether Australian academic Sean Turnell -- who has been detained for more than a year -- would be among those released.
The economics professor was working as an adviser to civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi when he was arrested last February, days after she was ousted by the military.
He has been charged with violating Myanmar's official secrets law and faces a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison if found guilty.
About 100 people gathered outside Yangon's Insein prison on Saturday morning hoping to be reunited with loved ones, AFP correspondents said.
Four minibuses left the prison around noon local time (0530 GMT) and drove away, with those inside waving as people in the crowd shouted the names of relatives.
The junta marked Union Day with a show of force in the military-built capital Naypyidaw ...generally translated as royal capital, seat of the king or abode of kings because the general in charge had a massive ego. It was founded in 2002 because Rangoon was worn out. Traditionally, Naypyidaw was used as a suffix to the names of royal capitals, such as Mandalay, which was called Yadanabon Naypyidaw in Burmese... Hundreds of troops paraded alongside civil servants waving national flags in unison, and there were choreographed dances.
Helicopters carrying the country's yellow, green and red flag flew overhead, followed by jets trailing the same colours in smoke.
In a speech to troops, Min Aung Hlaing repeated the military's claim of massive fraud in 2020 elections won by Suu Kyi's party.
He also invited the myriad ethnic armed organizations that have been fighting Myanmar's military -- and each other -- for decades to sit for peace talks.
The Karen National Union, whose fighters have clashed repeatedly with junta troops in the east, said it would not attend talks.
[BenarNews] Armed men ambushed a two-vehicle convoy carrying a Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commander traveling through a southern Philippine village on Saturday, killing nine and injuring three others, authorities said.
How odd. MILF signed a peace agreement with the Philippine government in 2014, thereafter turning their attention to running the transitional government in the now-autonomous Mindanao region. Recalcitrant spin-offs attached to ISIS continue old habits, though.
The men attacked the convoy of Peges Mamasainged, also known as Commander Black Magic, around 8:30 a.m. in Tambunan village in Maguindanao province, according to provincial police commander Col. Jibin Bongcayao.
"The motive of the incident is the long-standing family feud of the involved parties," the police official said.
Feud, not jihad? OK — moved to Page 3.
Mamasainged, a member of the MILF’s inner guard base command, was traveling to a nearby village when he was killed along with five relatives and three unidentified individuals. Authorities did not release details on those who were maimed.
Bongcayao identified MILF members Jordan Mama Lintang and his son, Morsid, as the alleged leaders of the attack. He did not say if any of the attackers were maimed or if members of the convoy fired back.
MILF front man Von Al Haq, meanwhile, said the father and son were not members of the organization. The MILF signed a peace agreement with the government in 2014, ending its long-running separatist insurgency in the region.
In predominantly Moslem areas of Mindanao island, it is not unusual for families to settle differences through clan wars known as "rido." Hostilities could last for decades until a peace pact is signed, usually through mediation by religious leaders along with a cash payment.
Political rivalries, ancestral land claims, disputes over local fiefdoms as well as election-related feuds often spur clan wars in Mindanao, the country’s mineral-rich southern third.
"Police and military personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent escalation of the incident," Bongcayao said.
Al Haq, the MILF front man, told BenarNews the organization’s ceasefire team was on the ground as well to help prevent the situation from getting worse.
"It’s confirmed that those people ambushed were our men. The suspects are not connected with us," he said. "We are checking if it’s election related."
On May 9, Filipinos will vote to elect a new president and vice president, fill 12 of the 24 Senate and all 316 House seats along with about 18,000 official positions ranging from governors to mayors and town councilors.
Philippine elections, especially in the countryside, are traditionally marred by violence. In 2019, 23 people were killed and 50 injured during mid-term polls and as many as 50 people died in poll-related violence during the 2016 presidential election, according to statistics from the national police.
