[AlAhram] Egyptian security forces killed 17 Lions of Islam during a raid on their hideout in the North Sinai capital of Arish, the interior ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
The raid came after security forces received information that a group of gunnies were using the hideout in the Obeidat district to launch violent attacks targeting police and army personnel, the ministry said.
The Lions of Islam exchanged fire with security forces, leading to the death of 11 terrorists. Others fled to an abandoned house in the Hous district and were followed by security forces, resulting in the death of six others.
The Lions of Islam were found in possession of machine guns, three improvised bombs and two suicide belts.
Earlier this week, the military said it had killed ten gunnies as it thwarted a terrorist attack on a security checkpoint in North Sinai.
Egypt is fighting an Islamist militancy based in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula that has gained pace since 2013.
Hundreds of security-forces personnel have been killed in attacks claimed by bad boys, while the military has killed hundreds of Lions of Islam as part of an extensive campaign to crush the militancy in the border region.
[Jpost] Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... said on Tuesday that it was behind Sunday's attack on an Algerian military barracks near the country's border with Mali that killed one soldier.
The Death Eater group sent the bomber in a vehicle rigged with explosives, but a sentry stopped him before he could enter the compound and the blast killed both men, according to a Defence Ministry statement. The group's Algerian leader is a 47-year-old Death Eater known as Abu Walid el-Sahrawi."The martyred brother Omar al-Ansari ... entered the base and went kaboom! his car against them," the group said in a statement.
Algeria, in common with other countries in the Sahel and Sahara regions, is growing increasingly concerned about the risk of Death Eater groups taking advantage of the escalating conflict in Libya and chaos in Mali to expand their presence.
In Mali, the government has said it is ready to talk with jihadist groups in the hope of ending an insurgency that has made swathes of the country ungovernable and stoked ethnic violence.
In Libya, chaos in parts of the country since the 2011 revolution has created space for Islamic State, which launched a cross-border attack against a Tunisian town in 2016, but which is now mostly active in Libya's south.
"We need to focus on both Libya and Mali," a former Algerian counter-terrorism officer told Rooters. "This attack could be a preparation for what might come if we don't contain the threats."
Algiers has been discussing how to stem the rising Death Eater threat in the Sahel with Mali in recent days, and has offered it some humanitarian assistance. It shares more than 1,500km of mostly remote, desert border with Mali and Libya.
Sunday's attack was the first in Algeria for several years. In 2013, an Islamist Death Eater group linked to al Qaeda staged an attack on the Tiguentourine gas processing facility in southern Algeria that killed dozens of people, including foreigners.
That was the deadliest spasm of Death Eater violence in Algeria since a 1990s civil war between Islamist groups and the state in which more than 200,000 people died.
Algeria is already wrestling with a major political crisis after a year of mass protests that helped oust the veteran president and have continued, with demonstrators now demanding the ruling elite be fully replaced.
The country also faces economic problems, with declining energy sales contributing to a fall in state revenue and planned cuts in public spending this year.
[Jpost] Two Iranians were arrested in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito after attempting to travel to Spain with fake Israeli passports, according to Ynet.
A man and a woman in their 20s were attempting to travel to Madrid when they were discovered with the forged travel documents. They reportedly arrived in Ecuador with the fake passports at the end of January and attempted to travel once more. They also had Iranian passports.
It is unclear why they had the fake passports or if they were affiliated with Iran's intelligence services. Israeli passport holders do not require an entry visa to visit Ecuador, so the forgeries may have been used for that purpose.
In March, two Iranians were arrested in Argentina ...a country located on the other side of the Deep South. It is covered with Pampers and inhabited by Grouchos, who dance the Tangle. They used to have some islands called the Malvinas located where the Falklands are now. They're not supposed to cry for Evita... with forged Israeli passports that contained multiple spelling mistakes in Hebrew.
That’d be this story of a couple arrested as Iranian or Hezbollah spies who had arrived in Buenos Aires from Turkey via Spain. Could we be seeing ratlines going in both directions, used by both Shiite spies and Muslim colonists?
Department of Military Intelligence of Iraq issued a statement to confirm the arrest of the jihadist who previously served as the commander of Islamic State’s air defense division.
According to the statement, the IS commander was captured at a security checkpoint near Mosul after days of monitoring his movements.

He's trying to play both sides. Sentiment and anger are turning into action on the ground I bet, so he's "side-promoting" the blue caps. Bet the replacement is called Green Caps!

[IsraelTimes] Overturning a previous sentence of community service, the Supreme Court sends Mohammed Milhem to prison for a year for providing assistance to Nashat Milhem, the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. -inspired terrorist who killed three people in a shooting in Tel Aviv on New Year’s Day, 2016.
The Haifa District Court had sentenced Mohammed Milhem to 300 hours of community service for purchasing a cellphone for Milhem while he was on the run from security forces, despite the fact that the latter admitted to him that he had carried out the shooting.
Nashat Milhem killed two people in a shooting attack outside the Simta Bar on Tel Aviv’s busy Dizengoff Street. Shift manager Alon Bakal, 26, and patron Shimon Ruimi, 30, were killed in a hail of bullets as the gunman opened fire with a submachine gun. Seven people were also maimed.
Milhem later rubbed out taxi driver Ayman Shaaban as he expeditiously departed at a goodly pace. He abandoned the taxi on a road in northern Tel Aviv, before taking a bus to Ar’ara. He was eventually tracked down by security forces a week later after a massive manhunt and rubbed out after he opened fire.

Turkish-backed Syrian opposition forces strike back against Russian-supported government forces making gains in their campaign to eradicate the last opposition strongholds in northwest Syria.https://t.co/J53RXbmFBG
[Jpost] Turkey said on Tuesday 51 Syrian soldiers were killed in northwest Syria as Turkish-backed rebels struck back against Russian-supported government forces who had made gains in their campaign to eliminate the last insurgent bastion in the country.
The Turkish Defense Ministry cited sources on the ground for the information, adding that two Syrian tanks and one ammunition store were destroyed as well.
Hours before, a war monitor reported that Syrian government forces seized control of the main Aleppo-to-Damascus highway running through the embattled northwest province of Idlib for the first time since the early days of the civil war in 2012.
But Syrian state media made no mention of this and rebel sources later said fighting was continuing in some northern areas near the M-5 highway, which links Aleppo with the capital Damascus and ultimately Deraa in the far south.

[IsraelTimes] A Syrian military helicopter has been downed by Ottoman Turkish in Syria’s war-torn province of Idlib, killing both pilots, a war monitor group says.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the aircraft crashed near the village of Qaminas, southeast of Idlib city, after being hit by a rocket fired by Ottoman Turkish forces.
Ankara, which supports Syrian gangs in the rebel enclave in northwestern Syria, acknowledged the attack but did not claim responsibility.
The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... ’s defense ministry said it had obtained information that "a helicopter belonging to the regime has crashed" without specifying who was responsible.
