[NY Times] The French police on Friday killed the two brothers suspected of murdering 12 people at a Paris newspaper on Wednesday and freed their hostage unharmed, the authorities said.
The police launched a simultaneous raid on a kosher supermarket in Paris where an alleged associate of the brothers was holding a number of other hostages. At least some of those hostages escaped unharmed, according to the police.
Shortly after 5 p.m., explosions and gunfire were heard at a printing plant outside of Paris where the two brothers were holding a single hostage.
Moments later, gunfire erupted at the kosher supermarket, on the eastern end of Paris. One woman was seen running from the market as heavily armed police officers moved in, according to The Associated Press.
The French newspaper Le Monde reported that the supermarket hostage-taker had also been killed.
CBS News has more, including this interesting tidbit about the dead jihadi in the kosher supermarket:
CBS News also reports that Coulibaly appears to be connected to the Kouachi brothers as they belonged to the same recruiting ring that tried to get French forces to fight U.S. forces in Iraq several years ago.
Connections all over the place.

From the CBS link: Both were also on the U.S. no-fly list, a senior U.S. counterterrorism official said. The American officials also spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss foreign intelligence publicly.
The timing of the attack, during the newspaper’s hourlong weekly editorial meeting, indicates the attackers knew the editorial schedule of the newspaper and knew it was the one hour of the workweek where all the top editors and cartoonists would be present in one room. And the attackers were able to overcome significant security procedures for a newspaper that was known to be a target and had been firebombed in 2011, including at least one armed police officer assigned to protect the editor because of previous threats.
First strike: Hate speech of an imam. Issue a warning and a hefty fine. Imam banned from further preaching.
Second strike: Another hate speech of an imam. If it's the same imam, he and is family get shipped back to their country of origin within 24 hours. Triple the fine of the mosque, with a final warning.
Third strike: Close the mosque permanently. Seize all assets.

After Australia and now France experienced more terror in only a matter of weeks, I concur with what a talking head said yesterday, "Multi-culturalists are destroying civilization."
With the Jewish people in Paris targeted, it would be interesting to see what Israel's response will be. I suggest more settlements regardless of how our first Muslim President feels about that.

I watched the ABC news report on this. They wondered why all these terrorists attacks were occurring. They just could not figure it out. They even reported that one of the terrorist send they were defenders of the prophet. And now her and never did they say the one word that linked all this together.
ISLAM
It was kind of funny how they twisted themselves around so they would not. Gave to say that one word.
Reminded me of a SNL skid where they did the same thing. Also reminded me of how they did the exact same thing during Beslan where ISLAM IT terrorist took over that school in Russia.

Two separate situations; grocery at Port de Vincennes, Paris, where as many a five have been taken hostage. Report of two killed may be incorrect. Apparently two people, man and woman, possibly involved in shooting of policewoman yesterday.
Second at printing plant (likely did Hebdo) in Dammartin involving the two Hebdo killers. One has contacted the massive police force surrounding the plant, "You know very well who I am." One fellow walked in early in the event and actually shook the hand of the terrorist, thinking he was security. He was allowed to leave, because "We don't kill civilians." He was somewhat taken aback at that.

A senior Yemeni intelligence source told Reuters that one of the Charlie Hebdo shooting suspects met Anwar al Awlaki, a leading preacher for al Qaeda, while visiting Yemen in 2011.
There's that name again. At the center of everything, possibly more so than bin Laden.
And yet there are many who object to his rocketing. He should have been captured and summarily executed while he was still in the US.

Al-Qaeda and jihadi groups worldwide are continuing to point to Hasan as a role model and the Fort Hood attack as a paradigm........... Al-Awlaki stated explicitly in the interview, "Nidal Hasan is a student of mine, and I am proud of this. I am proud that there are people like Nidal Hasan among my students. What he did was a heroic act, a wonderful operation. I ask Allah to make him steadfast, to protect him, and to free him. I support what he did, and I call upon anyone who calls himself a Muslim, and serves in the U.S. army, to follow in the footsteps of Nidal Hasan."

[Ynet]. French Prime Minister Manuel Valls says there were "several arrests" Wednesday night in the hunt for two suspects in the deadly shooting at a satirical newspaper. According to the French Interior Ministry seven people had been arrested surrounding the terror attack.
In an interview with RTL radio Thursday, Valls said preventing another attack "is our main concern," as he explained why authorities released photos of the two men along with a plea for witnesses to come forward.
[UK.NEWS.YAHOO] Fear gripped residents in a wooded region of northern La Belle France Thursday where security forces hunted two brothers suspected of waging a Gay Paree magazine massacre.
Helicopters buzzed overhead as elite police and paramilitary forces in their hundreds combed through an area in the Aisne region where the runaways thought to be behind Wednesday's bloodbath were spotted earlier.
Police searched garden huts, garages and anywhere else they could be hiding.

Abu Hamza, born in Egypt as Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, was found guilty in May of 11 counts, including providing support for al-Qaeda. He argued that because of his disabilities, he would suffer unconstitutionally cruel and unusual punishment if incarcerated at the maximum-security federal prison in Florence, Colorado.
His forearms were amputated after an accident involving explosives and he suffers from psoriasis, diabetes and high blood pressure.
While acknowledging Abu Hamza was convicted of “terrible crimes,” his lawyers, Michael Bachrach and Sam Schmidt, argued a sentence of less than life in prison was appropriate.

[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: The capitals lower court here on Thursday granted bail to the alleged criminal mastermind of the Mumbai attacks, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, against surety bonds worth Rs200,000.
The bail application of Lakhvi was heard in the civil court of Mian Azhar Nadeem, where the counsel, Rizwan Abbasi, argued that his client was wrongly booked in the six years old kidnapping case.
He stated that the case was registered against his client to detain him on the pressure of India after the Anti-Terrorism Court granted him bail following a six-year delay in his trial. He observed that evidence recorded so far was based on hearsay. In response, the judge granted bail to Lakhvi.
When approached, the counsel said the surety bonds would be submitted within three to four days. However, a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package... the release of his client was difficult at the moment as he was detained in Adiala Jail under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) for a month. He may be released after the completion of the time period, he added.
However, Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried... the police and capital administration authorities were of the view that there was little chance of Lakhvi being released. His detention may be extended either by issuing another MPO or seeking his custody for investigation into other cases registered against him. They said that any future action would be taken on the directives of the government.

Rattled by the growing consensus in the country on taking firm action against militant groups to eradicate terrorism, the absconding chief of the outlawed Tehreek-i- Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Mullah Fazlullah ...son-in-law of holy man Sufi Mohammad. Known as Mullah FM, Fazlullah had the habit of grabbing his FM mike when the mood struck him and bellowing forth sermons. Sufi suckered the Pak govt into imposing Shariah on the Swat Valley and then stepped aside whilst Fazlullah and his Talibs imposed a reign of terror on the populace like they hadn't seen before, at least not for a thousand years or so. For some reason the Pak intel services were never able to locate his transmitter, much less bomb it. After ruling the place like a conquered province for a year or so, Fazlullah's Talibs began gobbling up more territory as they pushed toward Islamabad, at which point as a matter of self-preservation the Mighty Pak Army threw them out and chased them into Afghanistan... , has threatened to go after government leaders and senior members of the ruling PML-N.
In a video message released to the media, apparently recorded at his hideout somewhere in Afghanistan, he said that from now the PML-N is our target.
About 800 leaders and workers of the Awami National Party have been killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and other parts of the country during the past few years.

[IsraelTimes]. Furious Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, charges unity being ruined by stalled rehabilitation, tells Abbas it will not await your mercy
Another situation that has nothing to do with Israel.
The Paleostinian unity government will not be able to oversee Gazoos reconstruction drive without full administrative and security control over the Strip, a demand currently blocked by Hamas, the government declared in a statement this week.
Following a rare government meeting in Gazoo Tuesday, the government of Rami Hamdallah said Wednesday that PA civil servants who had left their positions as a result of Hamass violent takeover of the Gazoo Strip in June 2007 must be allowed to resume their posts, a move that would effectively put Hamas appointees out of business.
Hamdallah pledged to compensate the Hamas appointees through microfinancing for small businesses and donor state loans, on top of retirement packages.
No one will be wronged, and no state employee will be left without the ability to obtain reasonable income, he was quoted by official WAFA news agency as saying.
European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... auditors called in December 2013 for the de-funding of thousands of PA employees who were told by Ramallah to stay home ever since Hamass takeover more than seven years ago but have nevertheless continued to receive government salaries. Last June, Hamas physically blocked these employees from entering Gazoos banks, as a financial pitfall left Hamas employees without income.
The government indicated that it would not be able to push forward Gazoos reconstruction without full presence in the Strips border crossings, hinting that international funding had stalled due to Hamass insistence on remaining there.
If the government were to receive the crossings unchallenged, it could impose its control and take responsibility for the reconstruction. This would encourage donor states to fulfill their pledges made in the Cairo reconstruction conference, the statement read.
An incredulous Hamas attacked the government statement, claiming that the unity government had pledged at the meeting to solve all of Gazoos problems within four weeks. Moussa Abu Marzouk, deputy head of Hamass political bureau, published a protocol of his meeting with Labor Minister Mamoun Abu Shahla, according to which Hamdallah promised to solve the pending issue of conflict between Hamas and Fatah and grant job security to all civil servants without exception.
There is no justification for the existence of the government or [Mahmoud] Abbas [as PA president] if they continue dragging their feet vis-a-vis the people and its feelings, Gazoo-based Hamas official Salah Bardawil told Hamas daily Al-Resalah Thursday. Addressing Abbas, he added: Hamas will not await your mercy whenever you choose to bestow it. If you have decided to forsake [Gazoo], we will do whatever we can to avoid the impending disaster, which you wish for.
[Gulf Today] Two armed men on a motorcycle gunned down a female correspondent for a Manila-based tabloid while on her way to work in Bataan province in Central Luzon.
Nerlita Ledesma, 48, the correspondent of the daily tabloid Abante (Advance) was waiting for a ride near her home on Thursday morning when two still unidentified armed men who were apparently waiting for her fired at her, killing her on the spot.
Dabet Panelo, the media co-ordinator of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said police have yet to establish the motive of the killing, adding that in late 2013, gunmen strafed Ledesma’s house that nearly killed her daughter.
Panelo pointed out that Ledesma is the 31st journalist to be killed since June 2010.
During an insurgency-containment operation in Yala's Jor Irong district on Tuesday, two militants were killed when the suspects fired at on-duty rangers.
Internal Security Operations spokesman Colonel Pramote Phromin said about five men in a truck broke through a checkpoint and the rangers gave chase. The truck's tire exploded, so the suspects had to stop four kilometers past the checkpoint. When the rangers approached the suspects, they opened fire and one ranger was hit in the hand.
During the gunfight two suspects were killed and three others fled. One of the killed suspects was wanted for the May 2006 shooting of a Buddhist villager.
[AnNahar]. No deaths recorded as snowstorm halts Syria fighting
A group monitoring Syria's war said Thursday that it had recorded no deaths in the conflict for the first time in three years as a rare snowstorm forced a halt to fighting.
"We did not document any new killings on Wednesday," Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Agence La Belle France Presse.
"While humanitarian needs soared, the snowstorm protected Syrians from battles, gunfire, shelling, rocket fire and air strikes," he said.
Other activist networks also reported no deaths on Wednesday.
The storm hit Syria and other parts of the Middle East on Wednesday, leaving much of the country including Damascus blanketed in snow and causing fuel and electricity shortages.
Fighting and shelling resumed on Thursday as the weather improved, said the Observatory, which relies on a wide network of sources inside Syria to monitor the conflict.
Israel also has shut down because of the snowstorm. Sometimes Mother Nature's cruelty is kind.
[Ynet]. ISIS beheaded a Syria holy man Thursday for "insulting God," an activist group said.
"The IS executed the imam of a mosque from the village of Abu Khuyut near Hasakeh city (in northeastern Syria) at dawn Thursday," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, using an alternative name for the group.
