[TOI] BANGALORE: A neighbourhood woman peeping into your house may not be all that bad a proposition. M Indiramma, a homemaker from Nandini Layout, North Bangalore, realized this after a neighbour peeping through her window ended up saving her from the clutches of a pair of knifewielding robbers on Wednesday evening.
Indiramma, 40, resident of Coolienagar, near BHEL Circle, Nandini Layout, was alone at home when two men barged into her house through the door that was kept ajar. The men were wielding knives and charged menacingly at the woman.
[An Nahar] A group of nuns in Spain got a New Year surprise when they checked their answerphone machine to discover they had missed a call from the Pope, who left a message asking why they didn't pick up.
"What can the nuns be doing that stops them answering the phone?" said Pope Francis, chuckling, in the message he left on New Year's Eve for the Barefoot Carmelites of Lucena, aired on Spanish radio on Friday. They've already slept through the Last Clarinet.
"This is Pope Francis," he went on. "I wanted to give you New Year's greetings. I'll see if I can reach you later. God bless you." "Who is this really?"
The prioress of the convent, Sister Adriana, told COPE radio station she and the four other nuns were not listening for the phone because they were busy at their midday prayers.
She said the Pope was an old friend of some of the nuns in their group, who, like him, come from Argentina.
They now run the convent in a working class suburb of Lucena, a town near Cordoba in southern Spain.
"When my duties allowed me to go to the phone, I literally wanted to die" on hearing the missed message, Adriana said.
"I took down the message and passed it on to the other nuns. We told ourselves we had just been fulfilling our duty of prayer. We never thought the Pope would remember us."
She frantically called a bishop and other contacts to try and return the call to the Vatican, without success, but Francis called back and managed to talk to the nuns in the evening.

[PhillyNews] MOST TEENAGERS do dumb things. But not trying-to-rob-Joe-Galiano dumb.
Galiano is the owner of Suburban Armory, the gun shop on MacDade Boulevard in Collingdale, Delaware County. There is a giant gun-shaped sign on the roof. Inside, Galiano is surrounded by guns, including the .45-caliber pistol on his hip. Can't miss it.
And the cop shoppe is just around the corner from the shop.
Despite these conspicuous crime deterrents, two teenagers nonetheless decided to throw on burqas and pull a silver handgun on Galiano about 1:40 p.m. yesterday in a botched attempt to stick him up, police said.
This is why sensible societies ban face coverings...
"They had the whole-body Moslem garb," Collingdale Police Chief Robert Adams said. "They came in with the gun and pointed it for a holdup."
Galiano, faced with the incongruous image of a male dressed in female Moslem garb waving a gun around, decided to make use of one of the many firearms at his disposal.
"It doesn't make any sense," Adams said of the attempted robbery. "He carries a gun and it's right out there in the open. He pulled it out and shot."
Cops say Galiano fired one shot at the teens, ages 15 and 17. Neither was struck, but the .45-caliber blast apparently made them see the error of their ways. They ran from the store.
One of the teens hopped onto the SEPTA Route 114 bus toward Chester and tried unsuccessfully to hide in the back. Police apprehended him and found the silver handgun on the floor of the bus.
The other teen was tossed in the clink Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try! behind a trolley stop, covered in mud and sweating profusely. Police say they recovered the burqas, a backpack with duct tape and other evidence between the Suburban Armory and the trolley stop.
Adams said he is not identifying the teens because of their ages. Their parents were called to the station. Pending charges include robbery, possession of an instrument of crime, reckless endangerment and drug possession.

Very weird. A couple years ago two idiots in muzz garb would come to gun shows in western PA and walk around striking poses and smirking. Eventually they were refused admittance to the shows. Any connection? I wonder...

I'd give the story a thumbs up for the Idiots of the Day award. This Dumb and Dumber duo never even got to the duct tape stage of their so-called failed plan. Moral of the story? Galiano should spend a little more time at the range to sharpen up his aim.

A former finance minister, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, won Madagascars first presidential election since a coup in 2009, but his closest rival said the vote had been rigged, raising concerns the nation could remain mired in political turmoil.

The electoral commission said Friday that Mr. Rajaonarimampianina, the candidate backed by the departing president, who took power nearly five years ago, won 53.5 percent of the Dec. 20 vote. Mr. Robinsons camp has filed almost 300 complaints to the electoral court, which has to rule on the commissions provisional result by Jan. 19.
If Mr. Rajaonarimampianina, above, is officially declared the winner, he will be the head of state with the longest family name, at 19 letters, according to a survey by the British newspaper The Guardian. His full name is Hery Martial Rakotoarimanana Rajaonarimampianina.

[Al Ahram] Pope Francis has called for a rethink in the way the Catholic Church deals with the children of gay couples and divorced parents, warning against "administering a vaccine against faith".
"On an educational level, gay unions raise challenges for us today which for us are sometimes difficult to understand," Francis said in a speech to the Catholic Union of Superiors General in November, extracts of which were published on Italian media websites on Saturday.
"The number of children in schools whose parents have separated is very high," he said, adding that family make-ups were also changing.
"I remember a case in which a sad little girl confessed to her teacher: 'my mother's girlfriend doesn't love me'," he was quoted as saying.
The pontiff said educational leaders should ask themselves "how can we proclaim Christ to a generation that is changing?"
"We must be careful not to administer a vaccine against faith to them," the 77-year-old added.
Though the Church has often been in conflict with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community over its opposition to same-sex marriage and to homosexuality, Francis has drawn praise for attempts to be inclusive.
In July he reached out to gays, declaring that "if someone is gay and seeks the Lord with good will, who am I to judge?"
And in December, the Advocate magazine -- dedicated to the gay and lesbian community -- chose the head of the Catholic Church as the "single most influential person of 2013 on the lives of LGBT people."
The reform-minded pontiff has also called an extraordinary assembly of the Synod of Bishops next year to discuss the Church's position with regard to the family, which is expected to address among other issues the problem of divorcees remarrying and children of divorced parents.

Funny but I thought dogs pi$$ed and $hit where other animals and dogs already have. Have had a lot of dogs and pretty certain they don't get lined up magnetically. I'll check with my expert, dog Gertrude and get back with you.

I just glanced at the paper, and didn't check all that statistical params that might suggest B.S or not. However, perhaps it is the dog turds and not the doggies that align themselves with the geomagnetic field. Then, in the same way that it is easier to ride a horse in the direction it's going, perhaps it is easier to pinch a geomagnetic loaf when aligned with the field.
You could check this hypothesis by collecting a large number of dog turds and suspend them from a thread, looking for magnetic alignment.

No thanks Ms. Perry. I cannot accept your carefully crafted apology, and neither should anyone else. The segment setup was flawed from the beginning. Had the photograph not included the Romney's adopted African American baby [Kieran Romney], it would never had ran. Baby Kieran was the central theme and MSNBC's cruel humor. Sickening but hardly surprising.

Bottom line: No amount of privilege, goodwill, Affirmative Action, or Godly intent will erase the victim mentality. Victim mentality is essentially the 'third leg' of the entitlement equation (Black + Poor + Victim = Entitlement). Without it, the entire entitlement and disparity based social justice argument collapses.

You could fill in the word "black" with "woman" or "gay" or "Muslim" any of another fifteen self described victim categories, Besoeker, and the equation holds.
The root problem is that as the government has grown, and government compensation disconnected from actual productivity became not only tolerated but desirable, people sought to become "victims" rather than survivors, take away the government funding for victim status and this problem pretty much evaporates.

She's crying because she got called on it and royally and publicly reamed - and by the likes of CNN at that. I mean how bad to you have to be to have CNN call you on it?
My guess is that she was given a choice of developing a tear or two on national TV or be shown the door.

The panelists are discussing populist sentiment in America as part of a discussion about the election of Bill de Blasio in NYC. The discussion spans a commercial break, and in the second half, Katrina Vanden Heuvel is addressing the idea that Republican populism has been successful in stirring up emotion and movement based on a message of lower taxes and limited government. Vanden Heuvel essentially says that yes, the right has been successful, but because "racist":
But I do think the right-wing populism of the tea party not only became so on obsessed with an anti-government meme, but lets be honest. there is a race racism threaded through the right-wing populism, I mean which is not unusual to American right-wing populism, that has not allowed for coalitions that could be built on behalf of working people in this country against the most powerful interests.
Host Harris-Perry quickly steers the conversation, suggesting that rather than focus on the contemporary Republican party, they look back at populism historically. She says that in the past it was more obvious and accepted and in fact was in the Democratic party, right, where it was happening at that time.
Later in the segment, New York Post editorial writer Robert George suggests that racism played its part in part in both right wing and left wing populism, even calling out the unions, but Vanden Heuvel will have none of it.
