[Intelligencer] The Congressional Black Caucus has extended an invite to the parents of Tyre Nichols to attend President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address on February 7. Per the group’s executive director, RowVaughn Wells and Rodney Wells, Tyre’s mother and stepfather, have accepted the invitation.
The invitation comes just days after the city of Memphis released video footage of the brutal attack on 29-year-old Nichols by police officers following a traffic stop earlier this month. Nichols was hospitalized in critical condition and died three days later. Five Memphis police officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith — were fired for their role in the beating, then subsequently charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping, among other charges.
The CBC has also requested a meeting with Biden personally to "push for negotiations on much needed national reforms to our justice system — specifically, the actions and conduct of our law enforcement." The group is also urging its congressional colleagues to make more progress in discussions concerning criminal-justice reform.
"We are calling on our colleagues in the House and Senate to jumpstart negotiations now and work with us to address the public health epidemic of police violence that disproportionately affects many of our communities," the CBC said in a statement.
There are signs that Nichols’s death is prompting more urgency among some in Congress to get some legislation passed to address criminal-justice reform. Politico reports that Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey intends to reintroduce the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in the Senate soon. The bill, which was passed by the Democratic Party—led House twice, has been stalled in the Senate due to a lack of votes despite attempts at bipartisan talks.

I understand three of the cops had their body cams disabled. What, did the other two forget?

Just another black guy who got himself killed resisting arrest...another cause celebre for Democrats, BLM and Antifa. All the cops involved were black but it's still the fault of systemic racism.
But what to do when it becomes impossible for any cop anywhere to arrest any black man for any crime whatsoever?

I am not exactly sure what these protests are about? The cops were fired, arrested, charged…. Is that not what is suppose to happen in a society that values the rule of law?

Food stamps don’t interest me because there is no way to win a jackpot associated with them. They should do something like the McDonalds Monopoly gambit. Spice it up a little. I have probably qualified for them somewhere in my life, but they always seemed like an annoying way to back up the checkout aisle. If they included collectible rookie curling cards or a way to match figurines to win smokes or booze, I might be interested. Free garbanzo beans isn’t enough to addict me to the government handouts.

President Biden claimed Monday that he had an Amtrak train key when he was a senator and would ride "about 15% of the time" with engineers on trips home to Delaware.
The 80-year-old president shared the memory in Baltimore while touting $4 billion from his $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure law that will be used to build a pair of train tunnels in the city to replace a passage from 1873.
"I can say it now since there’s different leadership. I used to about 15% of the time ride with the engineers, for real. And I’m the only guy that I’m aware of — when I stopped riding Amtrak — that had a key to get in the back," Biden said.
It’s unclear if Biden has told the story before, though he regularly shares personal anecdotes that fall apart under scrutiny.
Amtrak spokespeople did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
Biden noted in Baltimore that he regularly rode Amtrak home to Wilmington while in the Senate.
