Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's son charged with stabbing his 60-year-old neighbor seven times' over trash can.
[ABC7] In the June 9 incident neighbor Ray Winsor, 60, got into an argument with Adam about helping his grandmother take in the trash cans. Adam responded by stabbing Winsor seven times, resulting in a fractured skull.

On Tuesday he was charged with three felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and a felony count of carrying a dirk or dagger. If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum sentence of nine years and eight months in state prison.

Prosecutors say Abdul-Jabbar argued with his 60-year-old neighbor, with whom he shares a driveway, on June 9. The neighbor had confronted Abdul-Jabbar about not taking in the trash cans for his elderly roommate, and Abdul-Jabbar allegedly stabbed the neighbor several times with a large hunting knife.

'I sort of got on him because the lady who takes care of him is 83-year-old, he doesn't do anything for her and it just bums me out, she's in a walker taking her trash cans down,' said to Eyewitness News in June.

#2  Evil aside, why is it this fellow could not calculate the obvious consequences of such an act and reject it out of hand? What power is it that overrides common sense and good judgement? What is the missing element of the thought process? Acts like this appear to be all too common. Someone trained in these matters must have the answers.

#3  Years ago, lefty journalist Kevin Drum wrote a piece about how ingestion of lead--context of lead paint in old buildings--before age five results in deficient impulse control. Irreversible. Nobody wants to take on the question of various populations with a disproportionate number of people who might just "go off".
So if you're wondering "what was he thinking?", maybe he wasn't thinking.

The Intense Rules for US Marines Who Protected Mail from Gangsters
[Military.com] "When our Corps goes in as guards over the mail, that mail must be delivered," wrote Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby. "Or there must be a Marine dead at the post of duty. There can be no compromise." It was the Golden Age of the Gangster, when bank robbers were folk heroes, cheered on by citizens who were suffering under the weight of Prohibition and the Great Depression. But when the mail started getting robbed by these hoods, the Postmaster General asked President Harding to send in the Marines.

In October 1921, gangsters hit a mail truck in New York City, making off with $2.4 million in cash, securities, and jewelry — $34 million dollars when adjusted for inflation. That wasn't the only high-stakes robbery. Between April 1920 and April 1921 alone, thieves stole more than six million dollars in U.S. mail robberies — $85 million when adjusted for inflation. So when the Postmaster asked the President for the Marines, the Commander-In-Chief was happy to oblige.

Harding instructed Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby to meet with Commandant of the Marine Corps Maj. Gen. John Lejeune to "detail as guards for the United States mails a sufficient number of officers and men of the United States Marine Corps to protect the mails from the depredations by robbers and bandits."

For a smile. One smart stray

[Ananova] The incident was filmed by Tania Santos Coy, 32, in the city of Piedras Negras in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, and the footage was later shared on Facebook where it has gone viral with 3.1 million views.

According to local media, the cat is well known in the area and frequently waits out the Oxxo supermarket for shoppers to come along. The clever feline then leads them inside the supermarket and over to its favourite range of products.

Tania said: 'One day I noticed that he had many injuries and I decided to follow him to find out if he had a home.' When they got to where the cat was sleeping she realized it was living in an abandoned house.

Tania and her partner decided to adopt the cat, and now call it Rabbit because they think it looks so much like one.
For others who have taken one of these in. Feral cats can make the most loyal, grateful, smart pets.

Stars Attending VMAs Granted Exemption To Cuomo Quarantine Rules
[WIRED] Celebrities from out of state attending the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in New York will not have to entirely quarantine themselves for 14 days, as most others traveling to the state are required to do at threat of $10,000 in fines and up to 15 days behind bars.

According to The New York Post, celebrities attending the award show have been granted special exemptions to coronavirus-related quarantine rules from the New York State Department of Health.

A spokesperson for Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the stars can "participate in the production of the show, but they will only interact with other members of the cast and crew and will quarantine when not working," the Post reported.

The VMAs "agreed to police itself with ’rigorous safety protocols including testing and screening and compliance checks by a special compliance officer,'" the report added.

If you are not a celebrity attending the VMAs, or offered some other exemption, and are traveling from any of the dozens of states Cuomo has deemed a coronavirus "hot" zone, you’ll have to fill out a form disclosing your travel and agree to quarantine for 14 days. If you fail to report yourself, you could find yourself facing a $2,000 fine and potentially "ordered to complete mandatory quarantine."

"All out-of-state travelers from designated states must complete the form upon entering New York," the state’s health department travel guidance says. "Travelers who leave the airport without completing the form will be subject to a $2,000 fine and may be brought to a hearing and ordered to complete mandatory quarantine. Travelers coming to New York from designated states through other means of transport, including trains and cars, must fill out the form online."

According to the Post, some "415,000 travelers flying or driving into New York since June 25 after visiting one of the 34 restricted states have ’voluntarily’ filled out health forms as of Friday, state officials said."

Fears in Russia that head of Tuva region has been re-infected with coronavirus - news follows similar case in Hong Kong

[RT] The leader of Siberia's remote Tuva Republic has been flown to Moscow for treatment after apparently becoming infected with Covid-19 for the second time. He was initially diagnosed with coronavirus in early summer.

Sholban Kara-ool said that this time the symptoms of the disease are different, complaining of a splitting headache, rather than the chest discomfort he experienced the first time round. "I am once again here, in an infectious diseases hospital. It's Covid-19 once again. I am ill for a second time," Kara-ool said in a video uploaded to his official page on the VKontakte social network, and also shared on Instagram.

"Maybe, my workload prevented antibodies, immunity from developing after the first infection," he wrote. During the previous hospitalization, the region's chief was discharged from hospital on June 4. Kara-ool said that he was sure that it was impossible to get sick with coronavirus a second time, but "apparently, this self-confidence let me down."

The first confirmed case of Covid-19 re-infection was reported on Tuesday by scientists at the University of Hong Kong. According to their research, the patient has been affected with a different strain of coronavirus, rather than the one he contracted a few months earlier. The first time the patient had mild symptoms, but they are more severe in the second instance.

So far, 966,189 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Russia, with 779,747 patients having recovered from the disease, and 16,568 deaths, according to official figures.

Mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke 'is over': Writings and remains reveal 'vanished' English settlers simply went to live with local tribe

[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] It is one of America's oldest unsolved mysterious, but a hobby archaeologist believes to have uncovered the truth behind the Lost Colony of Roanoke.

In 1587 a group of English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island to start a new life, but three years later more than 100 of the colonists vanished — leaving only the word 'CROATOAN' carved in a wooden post.

Scott Dawson has spent decades investigating their disappearance and stands firm on the idea that the group integrated with the Croatoan tribe on Hatteras Island - and has uncovered writings that support this theory.

John White, one of the settlers who returned to a deserted camp in 1590, wrote he was never able to search Hatteras Island because of weather and dwindling supplies, but his writings indicate he took solace in the message carved into the post.

'I greatly joyed that I had found a certain token of their being at Croatoan where Manteo was born,' reads the passage.

Manteo, a leader of the Croatoan tribe, befriended the Lost Colony settlers before traveling back to England with the explorers. 'They were never lost,' Dawson told PilotOnline. 'It was made up. The mystery is over.'

The settlers are said to have lived happily among the tribe and had mixed families that carried on for generations.

John Lawson, another English explorer, landed in what is now Charleston, North Carolina about a century after the lost colony and to his surprise encountered natives with blue eyes who could 'speak out a book,' according to his personal records.

Russia Releases Footage Of A 100 Megaton Nuke Test From 1961
[Zero Hedge] - Russia has for the first time released full declassified footage of the Soviet Union's monster nuclear bomb known as the 'Tsar Bomba' hydrogen bomb (codenamed "Ivan").

Widely considered to be the most powerful nuclear weapon ever created and tested, it was detonated 4,000 meters above a sparsely populated archipelago in the Barents Sea on Oct. 30, 1961 as part of a secretive test nevertheless detected by US intelligence.

The bomb had a yield of an estimated 50 megatons, or the equivalent of 50 million tons of TNT, and though poor-quality images had already been released, just days ago the Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation published a 40-minute full documentary featuring the new declassified video of the bomb detonation after being dropped by a Tu-95 Bear bomber on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Russia’s nuclear industry.
I'm wondering what that test site looks like now.

Megaton - now that's a heavy metal band name if I ever heard one.
Posted by: Raj || 08/26/2020 12:03 Comments || Top||

#8  Apparently the design allowed for a final fast fission stage.

The very fast neutrons emitted by fusion stage would have triggered fission of U238 which would have contributed the other 50 megatons, at the price of massive contamination with radioactive fission products.

Since they would have used depleted or natural uranium critical mass wouldn't have been an issue.

#9  The 'covert' Soviet test ended up not being so secret after all, given reports say the blast and resulting mushroom cloud were visible up to 621 miles away, further shattering windows in nearby Finland.

Widely considered to be the most powerful nuclear weapon ever created and tested, it was detonated 4,000 meters above a sparsely populated archipelago in the Barents Sea on Oct. 30, 1961 as part of a secretive test nevertheless detected by US intelligence.

Navalny poisoned with cholinesterase inhibitor, Charitéreports
[EN.ALGHADEER.TV] Opposition activist Alexey Navalny was poisoned with a substance from a group of cholinesterase inhibitors. It is not yet known which one exactly. The intoxication is indicated by clinical data, says the blurb of the Berlin clinic Charité, where the politician was recently taken.

Berlin doctors specify that another examination is scheduled for a more accurate identification of the substance. The action of the toxin has been proved several times in independent laboratories, the report says.

Navalny is in an artificial coma with no serious threat to his life. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
doctors do not rule out long-term negative consequences of the poisoning, "especially in case of the nervous system," while the outcome of the disease remains unclear.

The group of cholinesterase inhibitors includes many compounds, including domestic and agricultural insecticides (such as dichlorophos), as well as chemical warfare agents. The latter include the Novichok, which, according to the British authorities, was used to poison former GRU colonel Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

After Charité’s statement, Navalny’s spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh tweeted that the words of the opposition leader’s comrades-in-arms about his poisoning were now confirmed by tests. Anastasia Vasilieva, the politician’s doctor, in her turn, believes that the patient could have been saved much faster.

When asked to comment on this statement, Vasilyeva said she couldn’t add anything to it.

The Ministry of Health of the Omsk region states that the doctors at the clinic where Navalny was placed are ready to provide their colleagues from Charité with "both the results of laboratory tests and samples of the patient’s biomaterials," which will allow us to "track the entire clinical dynamics of his vital signs".

At a presser, Alexander Murakhovsky, chief physician of Omsk’s BSMP-1, was unable to answer the question of the Dozhd journalist about the "people in civilian clothes" who worked on the territory of his hospital. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
he called Alexei Navalny a "political patient".

"I can’t say that they were doing anything there. Yes, they arrived. Everything’s okay? Yeah, fine. And they were gone," said Murakhovsky.

In the morning of August 20, Russian politician Alexei Navalny was returning to Moscow from Tomsk from the shooting of another investigation. In Tomsk and Novosibirsk, he also supported his supporters in local elections. Before his flight, the opposition activist had tea in a cafe at the Tomsk airport. His spokesperson Kira Yarmysh said that Navalny did not drink anything else on the plane and had not eaten anything since morning.

Falwell Jr claims wife's illicit affair and 'fatal attraction' situation threatened to ruin family
[FOXNEWS] Jerry Falwell Jr. purportedly agreed on Monday to resign as president of Liberty University following a series of personal scandals that have overshadowed his tenure as head of the conservative Christian college in Virginia.

An official at the school, speaking on the condition of anonymity, claimed Falwell Jr. had agreed to step down - something that would be made official Monday evening - but Falwell Jr. appeared to flip the narrative at the last minute and told multiple media outlets he would not go.

The murky back and forth just added to an already muddled set of circumstances that has come to define Falwell Jr. as of late.

Falwell Jr., who took over the post from his late father in 2007, had been on thin ice following allegations he broke the evangelical university's code of conduct after posting a picture of himself with a young woman on a yacht whose zipper was undone.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
opposition to his presidency came to a dramatic head after a Miami man claimed he had been in a sexual affair with Falwell Jr. and his wife Becki for years.

Falwell Jr. said he and his wife befriended the man and allegedly went into business with him but that the relationship had soured after the man, identified as Giancarlo Granda, became obsessive and that the situation turned into a "fatal attraction."

Falwell Jr. claimed Granda had threatened to expose the affair his wife had eight years ago and that the threat triggered an emotional roller coaster for his family ahead of his suspension from his collegiate post earlier this month.

On Friday, the Virginia-based private university said it was investigating "rumors and claims" about Falwell Jr.

The 58-year-old father's fall from grace has sent shockwaves through the school.

A formal announcement from Liberty University on his exit is expected later Monday, according to a school official.

Elon's Neuralink - High Precision Neural Interface
[Hot Air] There some big news allegedly coming out this Friday from Elon Musk. This time, however, it’s nothing to do with his SpaceX rocket program, his Tesla electric cars or even the Boring Company, which is trying to create train tunnels across the country. This is yet another of Musk’s many brainchildren, with a significant emphasis on the "brain" part. Elon has an outfit named Neuralink which is hoping to perfect the technology required to have a functional interface between machines and the human brain up and running in the very near future. And this week he’s promised a demonstration that will show it’s not just some pie-in-the-sky dream. He’s going to show neurons firing in a human brain in realtime.

Squaw Valley ski resort to drop ‘squaw' from name
"When the resort is named in conversation, what Fillmore hears is a barrage of slurs, she said. "All of a sudden people are asking if you ski and telling you about how they’re going to go ski, racial slur. ’Let’s go ski, racial slur,’" she said. 'People don’t even think twice about how that word is impacting the person they’re talking to.'"

So maybe Fillmore should consider identifying as something that is outrage-proof. But that would probably be attention-proofed as well.

Rantburg health tips: Erectile dysfunction drugs may help reduce early death from colon cancer, study finds
[FoxNews] The risk of premature death significantly decreased by 18% among colon cancer patients who took the ED drugs.

Viagra, Levitra and Cialis typically treat men who suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED), but a new Swedish study says these ED drugs may also help prolong the lives of men diagnosed with colon cancer. The observational study published recently in Nature Communications found the risk of premature death significantly decreased by 18% among colon cancer patients who took the ED drugs, researchers concluded.

PDE5 inhibitors, such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis, have an anti-cancer potential and may improve the prognosis of those with colorectal cancer, study author Wuqing Huang, a Ph.D. student at Lund University, said in a news release.

“Available preclinical evidence suggests that PDE5 inhibitors could slow down the tumor growth and progression in mice, but it is still unknown whether PDE5 inhibitors can hinder the proliferation of cancer in humans," she stated, noting that researchers decided to explore this notion.

Breweries apologizes for naming beer after Hindu deity

#4  The beer first came to the attention of a Nevada-based Hindu activist named Rajan Zed, according to the report.
According to his website, Zed, who is president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, thanked the companies for discontinuing the beer. He also suggested that each company send senior executives to training for religious and cultural sensitivity.
