Los Angeles Officially Declares ‘Sanctuary City' Status for Criminal Illegal Aliens
What's changed?
[Breitbart] The city of Los Angeles, California, has officially declared itself a “sanctuary city” to shield criminal illegal aliens from arrest and deportation by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency — a decision that will enshrine the policy into its municipal code.

This week, the Los Angeles City Council made the official move to codify the region’s sanctuary policy, whereas prior directives were merely symbolic and thus subject to changes.

The sanctuary city designation, which mirrors California’s sanctuary state law, dictates that no city resources are used for federal immigration enforcement — barring local agencies from cooperating with ICE agents to turn criminal illegal aliens over for deportation.

The policy also requests Los Angeles officials to create routes for agencies to avoid sharing data with ICE agents.

Already, Los Angeles had been imposing a sanctuary policy that has local law enforcement releasing 75 to 100 criminal illegal aliens from its custody every day, according to data revealed in 2019.

California, today, has the nation’s largest illegal alien population, with nearly 3.3 million illegal aliens residing across the sanctuary state. This is an illegal population larger than the resident populations of 20 states, including Nevada, Idaho, Arkansas, Kansas, New Mexico, and Iowa.

10 Tips for Father's Day - Looking After Your Husband at Home
[Epoch Times] While strong husbands have always held the wolves at bay, women have, since time immemorial, held the home together with their awesome grace, their love, their strength of spirit.

A tree is known by its fruit. The fruit of the past produced our mothers, our grandmothers, our great grandmothers, as well as their beautiful, timeless, feminine charm. This popular excerpt has often been cited for its contrasting societal norms of past decades and those of the present day, though its denoted origins have also been contested. We now share it with you, our reader, for whatever truth lives inside it.

Hate it. Or love it. We leave it to you.

1. Have dinner ready

Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal—on time. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home, and the prospects of a good meal are part of the warm welcome needed.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
June 10 is the day of memory of Russian Colonel Yury Budanov
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Text taken from the V Kontakte page of Strelkov Igor Ivanovich
[
[ZPolk] On June 10, 2011, Yuri Budanov was killed. Hero of two Chechen wars, holder of the Order of Courage. A hero who courageously accepted and endured martyrdom for the sake of "pacifying Chechnya." He was killed brazenly, cynically, like a bandit - in front of his wife, in the very center of Moscow, in the middle of the day.

Three months before his death, he warned law enforcement agencies about surveillance. And what? They couldn’t (or didn’t want to?) protect him from a treacherous bandit bullet in the back. The enemy could not destroy the soldier in open battle, for a long time he tried to break the spirit of the Russian soldier with a string of courts, prison, and persecution. And, as a sign of his impotence, he killed.

Yuri Dmitrievich Budanov was born on November 24, 1963 in a small town in the Donetsk region. He graduated from the Kharkov Higher Command Tank School in 1987 and served in Hungary and Belarus. After the partition of the Soviet Union, he refused to serve in the troops of independent Belarus - in vain, probably.

The Russian army sent him to the very wilderness, to Transbaikalia. Budanov did not mind, and from the company commander of the 160th Guards Tank Regiment he rose to the rank of regiment commander, graduating from the Combined Arms Academy of the Armed Forces along the way. Participated in two antiterrorist campaigns in Chechnya. He proved to be an excellent leader.

His regiment practically did not suffer losses, and peaceful Chechens were never subjected to any violence by his subordinates. He himself received three severe contusions, but always remained in the ranks. Hundreds of officers like him passed through Chechnya during almost ten years of hostilities in this region of Russia. Why did the black lot fall on Budanov?

Back in the first extravagant war in the North Caucasus, Budanov saved a group of special forces who found themselves in a hopeless situation. Someone betrayed the scouts, they were trapped, the ammunition was running out, the weather was non-flying, the "turntables" could not help. Fortunately, part of Budanov was not very far away, his tankers pulled the special forces on their armor from pitch hell. Then it turned out that the regiment commander acted almost contrary to some orders from above. Perhaps there were forces that did not like such an initiative by the tanker.

The scouts were saved, none of the civilians in the villages along which Budanov's tanks were moving died. There was nothing to judge him for. However, a certain mark on it, quite possibly, was put just then.

The second Chechen campaign began with Shamil Basayev's attack on the peaceful villages of Dagestan at the end of the summer of 1999. The attack was repulsed, the troops of the Russian army entered Chechnya. In early August of the same year, Chief of the General Staff Anatoly Kvashnin decided to make an inspection trip to Dagestan, to the Botlikh region, taking with him many generals and colonels. The visit of the National School of Staff was prepared and passed with observance of all secrecy measures. Alas, the highest military officials of the Russian army were already waiting.

Four kilometers from the landing site of a group of Kvashnin helicopters, a firing point of an anti-tank guided missile system - ATGM was equipped. As soon as the helicopters landed, the militants opened fire. But General Kvashnin and the generals accompanying him managed to leave their Mi-8s.

Two helicopters were destroyed, killed: Hero of Russia Mi-8 pilot Yuri Naumov, helicopter navigator Alik Gayazov and spetsnaz intelligence officer Sergei Yagodin. As experts later found out, a real master shot. From the actual maximum range of a guided missile, only a sniper could hit helicopters, which in the world can be counted on the fingers.

A few months later, the location of the Budanov regiment was subjected to a similar attack. On the hill, four kilometers from the duty group of tanks, a Niva appeared. A group of people in camouflage came out of it, businesslike and quite calmly began to install the ATGM launcher. The militants were calm: there were old T-62 tanks in the Budanov regiment, which had no guided missiles in their ammunition load, and four kilometers was an almost limiting shot for a tank gun, it was considered simply impossible to hit a point target from such a distance - the Niva.

The very first shot of a guided anti-tank missile set fire to one of the T-62s. Fortunately, there was no crew. And then this is what happened. Yuri Budanov rushed to the duty car, pushed the commander out of it, clung to the sight himself, aimed the gun at the distant Niva. And with the very first shot of a high-explosive fragmentation projectile, he smashed to smithereens both the SUV, and the rocket launcher, and everyone who fussed next to it.

Colonel Budanov personally destroyed the one who killed the Hero of Russia pilot Yuri Naumov, navigator Alik Gayazov and intelligence officer Sergei Yagodin. He eliminated the potential killer of the Chief of the General Staff - only a combination of circumstances saved Anatoly Kvashnin.

The destruction of one of the best snipers in the world, who worked on the ATGM, could not be forgiven for Budanov. I wonder who hasn't forgiven?

We do not know, but the process of destroying the colonel's guard was launched. On January 6, 2000, an NTV film crew appears at the location of the Budanov regiment. The TV people are courtesy itself, they are their own guys, they provoke the colonel to a beautiful shot. Cannons hit militant bases in the mountains, and “dirty and cheerful Colonel Budanov,” as one of the newspapers recalled the day after the officer’s death, shouted “live: Merry Christmas to you.”

True, the journalist of the newspaper for some reason decided that Budanov's regiment was firing at the peaceful village of Tangi-Chu. He shot at the mountains, at the mountains! It is worth quoting from a journalist’s article that sheds light on the idea: “Everyone, including the Moscow generals, saw this report, and no one lifted a finger, no one was distracted from Christmas barbecues, bathhouses and whores.

So the "public diagnosis" Budanov was made. He is a crazy Russian officer, from whom you can expect all sorts of abominations. Indeed, it is too trivial to simply kill Budanov in retaliation for the master of rocket shooting he destroyed. It was necessary to smear the guardsman in the mud and in his face - all the officers of the Russian army.

Colonel Budanov was one of the best commanders of the regiment, he was in the thick of it, but suffered the least losses during the Second Chechen campaign. And at the moment when his regiment was withdrawn from the combat zone, they suddenly found themselves under fire from a sniper. The sniper acted like a fanatic - he first shot in the groin, and then in the heart or head.

As a result, they were looking for a female sniper, and suspicion directly fell on the deceased Elsa Kungaeva. Budanov's only mistake was that, having captured the suspected sniper, he did not wait for the arrival of the prosecutor's office investigator from Grozny, but began the interrogation himself. You can understand him: the commander, who valued the life of each of his soldiers, suddenly faced maximum losses outside the combat zone. Let me remind you that back then conscripts were called up to Chechnya - 18-year-old guys ...

“As people who know the circumstances of the case told me, during the interrogation Budanov received a phone call, and at that moment Kungaeva rushed at him, trying to take possession of his service weapon. Defending himself, Budanov struck her with a blow incompatible with life - he broke her cervical vertebra.

Then it was already invented that he allegedly raped her, although all the examinations showed that this was not the case. And all these human rights activists, especially Sergei Adamovich Kovalev and the liberal media, simply savored what scoundrels Russian officers were, excitedly competing who would pour more lies and dirt on Colonel Budanov.” - General Shamanov.

Neither the General Staff nor the Ministry of Defense stood up for one of their best officers; on the contrary, they made statements that predetermined his guilty verdict. - Fear of responsibility. Fear of Western opinion. High officials considered it advantageous to find an extreme one on which to hang all the dogs ... Imagine, neither a curfew nor a state of emergency was even introduced on the territory of hostilities, although it is obvious that this had to be done and this would put the legal status in order actions of the Russian military.

Who is to blame? Who didn't? political leadership of the country. There was no ban on the movement of residents of Chechnya in Russia - why, they are citizens of Russia! They were not seized from the so-called. "civil population" trucks, dump trucks and other heavy vehicles, although it is obvious that

Even being in prison, even being defamed, Budanov retains the honor of a Russian officer and loyalty to the oath. He was told: Colonel, keep in mind that your early release from prison will cause a bad response in the leadership of the Chechen Republic, and if we refuse to grant you pardon or amnesty, this will cause a bad response in the Russian officer environment and the public, so you better not ask any petitions at all. serve. And Budanov withdraws his petition for pardon, covering up the political leadership of the country to his own detriment.

In 2006-2007 an arbitrary decision of the court repeatedly denied the parole of Colonel Yu.D. As a pretext for refusing to release the court, the court determined the circumstance that “the statement of the convict about the confession of guilt in the crimes committed, about repentance for the deed, are of a formal nature, not confirmed by anything. Despite the fact that the court did not make a decision on compensation for the harm caused to the victims, the lack of attempts on the part of the convicted person to compensate for the harm caused to the victims in any form, to mitigate the consequences of the suffering suffered by the victims, indicates that the restoration of social justice in the case has not been achieved, and the fact that the correction of the condemned has not been achieved.

In the decisions of the courts against Russian officers, there is a hidden political motive associated with the relationship between the federal government and the authorities of the Chechen Republic, with attempts to appease ethnic bandits.

In early 2009, Colonel Yu.D. Budanov was released on parole. As a provocation to the media, false information was spread that the colonel would have to go back to jail in the case of the kidnapping of three people. The information was disseminated by representatives of the investigative department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for Chechnya.

The case was initiated back in 2000, and Budanov's involvement in it arose just at the moment of his release. The previously closed case was reopened for provocative purposes at the end of 2008 - after the appeal of the Chechen Ombudsman Nurdi Nukhazhiev, as well as statements from the relatives of the victims. Nukhazhiev and relatives of the victims of the kidnappers suddenly began to assert that Yuri Budanov was involved in the crime. Witnesses confirmed the guesses of the investigators at the identification procedure carried out on the basis of a photograph of Budanov,

The media used the release of Colonel Budanov to repeat their dirty fabrications about the officer who fought for the Motherland and was sent to prison for this. The fabrications were again raised that Budanov was drunk during the arrest of Kungayeva, that he raped her and then killed her. Budanov never denied the fact of the murder, he always regretted it, and the investigation has already responded negatively to the fabrications of the slanderers. None of the colonel's subordinates, despite pressure and threats, testified against their commander.

As one of the leaders of gangs operating in Chechnya, Kadyrov could not calmly endure the fact of the release from prison of Colonel Yuri Budanov, who spent 8.5 years behind barbed wire on fabricated reasons.

Kadyrov slandered a Russian officer: "Budanov is a schizophrenic and a murderer." “Budanov is a recognized enemy of the Chechen people. He insulted our people. Every man, woman and child believes that as long as Budanov exists, shame has not been removed from us. He insulted the honor of Russian officers. How can you protect him? What judge could let him go free? Behind him are dozens of human lives. I think the federal center will make the right decision - his place in prison for life. Yes, and this is not enough for him. But a life sentence will ease our suffering a little. We do not tolerate insult. If the decision is not made, the consequences will be bad. I will strive, write, knock on doors, so that he gets what he deserves. And our army, our strong army of a strong state, must also throw off this shame from itself.”

Such statements are a direct insult to all Russian people. The fact that the federal government does not make personnel decisions and does not remove a bandit from power testifies to the collusion of the highest leadership levels of this government with terrorist groups. authorities, courts, journalism, "human rights" environment. The systematic nature is explained by the personal position of Budanov, who, in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda, stated that before committing the crime, he considered himself an officer of the Russian army. Not Russian, just Russian.

Today we understand that the authorities have betrayed everyone! But we have “Heroes of Russia”! A year later, approximately, after the trial of Colonel Budanov, the Chairman of the Government of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov in 2004 was awarded the title "Hero of Russia"! Having gone over to the side of the federal government, together with his father, a prominent supporter of the independence of Chechnya, R. Kadyrov fought with Russian troops from 1996 to the end of 1999! And Colonel Budanov fought, as befits a military officer, on the orders of the military command of the Russian Federation, which, in turn, carried out the will of politicians!

In an address to his loved ones on the eve of the new year 2000, Colonel Yu.D. Budanov said: “Please take my word for it, we live normally. We ourselves are already in this war, but we need to fight it, this is our job ”The simple words of a military officer about his work that needs to be done and he did this war until his very last breath, until the very last minute. He fought, even after coming from the war, she did not leave him and the executioner's bullet stopped the heart of the Russian hero, but did not stop our hearts, ignited by the shed blood of Russian soldiers and officers, abandoned to destruction by traitors and enslavers of the Russian people and our Motherland - Russia.

Colonel Yu.D. Budanov will forever remain in the hearts of the Russian people and his feat of resisting the forces of evil, his confession of the Orthodox faith in front of a pack of corrupt politicians, lawyers, military leaders, judges will find its place in the glorious history of the Russian people and Russia.

And today, Colonel Budanov reminds (he said on the day of his release from prison): “Yes, it’s a shame, but I swore to serve the people. I did and continue to do this work. And if you understand that the people of Russia are in danger, that we are all surrounded - don't wait for the order, maybe no one will give it. You know what to do.

George Soros' Last Bet: Destroy Russia and Fool China
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Petr Akopov

[RIA] George Soros has long become almost synonymous with the most radical wing of the Anglo-Saxon globalists, that is, the group of supranational elites who are sure that the Atlantic model of globalization is not only the best, but the only true path for all of humanity. And for the sake of its triumph, it is necessary to remove without hesitation all the obstacles that arise in the way, so Soros's position on the Ukrainian issue was initially as anti-Russian as possible.

Now Soros is looking forward to the great success of the Ukrainian offensive, and in anticipation of it, he shares his thoughts on the main threats to humanity. In a recent Project Syndicate article, Can Democracy Survive the Polycrisis?" The most interesting thing is not that the billionaire puts the Ukrainian crisis only in third place in terms of importance, giving the first two threats emanating from artificial intelligence and climate change, but what expectations he has about the defeat of Russia.

With artificial intelligence, Soros is simple: he is for control over it, because "AI helps closed societies and poses a deadly threat to open societies. The reason is that AI is especially good at creating tools of control to help closed societies monitor their subjects."

This, to put it mildly, is debatable (even if we compare today's levels of control over the average citizen in the West and in Russia with China), but for Soros, who portrays everything that happens in the world as a struggle between democracy and totalitarianism, it would be strange not to use such a discussed topic, as a threat from artificial intelligence to promote their favorite idea.

There is nothing surprising about global warming either: it, according to Soros, is accelerating, and narrow-minded German farmers do not want to give up their cows, protest and even win elections (there are, however, oil companies that he mentions along with farmers).

Soros does not have a recipe for dealing with the first part of the polycrisis (artificial intelligence), but he does have recommendations to implement everything that has already been invented to combat global warming as soon as possible. But with regard to the Ukrainian crisis, everything is clear to him, and new important nuances appear in this clarity.

No, the course towards the defeat of Russia is unchanged, moreover, Soros believes that the Ukrainian army’s exit to the Crimea and the destruction of the Crimean bridge will be the beginning of the collapse of our country.

Dreams about the collapse of Russia are nothing new either for Soros or for that part of the Atlanticists who staked on victory over our country on the Ukrainian battlefield. The removal of Russia from the world stage would be their greatest victory, finally opening up to them the path to world domination, which they hastily considered free after the collapse of the USSR.

But even if Russia gets out of the way, the Atlanticists will have to face China - it is no coincidence that almost all of them call China the main threat to the Western world order, and Soros is especially active in attacking Xi Jinping . But it turns out that one can pretend that all this is reversible: “The end of the war in Ukraine will be a positive shock for the world. Biden will have the opportunity to reduce tensions betweenThe US and China, which is itself in an economic downturn, is making President Xi Jinping more receptive to the idea of seeking an understanding with the US. Biden is not seeking regime change in China; all he wants is to restore the status quo in Taiwan.

The defeat of Russia in Ukraine and the reduction of Sino-American tensions will provide the necessary space for world leaders to focus on combating climate change that threatens to destroy our civilization."

So here it is: the defeat and collapse of Russia will open up the opportunity for the United States to negotiate with China! World tensions will subside, and everyone together will finally seriously engage in the fight against global warming.

It’s not even clear whether to laugh or cry with laughter: who in the world (not to mention Beijing ) is able to believe that the United States only wants China to leave Taiwan alone? Someone forgot that the Taiwan issue was deliberately swayed by Washington last year?

Moreover, this was done largely for the sake of putting pressure on China against the backdrop of hostilities in Ukraine - the Americans wanted to demonstrate their determination to the Chinese in this way, warning them against strengthening relations with Russia. Neither of them succeeded, so now they have to turn back in an attempt to somehow stabilize their deteriorating relations with China. And against this background, George Soros comes out with dreams of a thaw in US-Chinese relations after the defeat and collapse of Russia!

The problem is not that the 92-year-old billionaire is out of touch with reality: after all, even the much more adequate and experienced century-old Kissinger already believed that Ukraine would be in NATO . The problem is that the ideologists of Atlantic globalization make mistakes not only in their general strategy (as is the case with the globalization model itself), but also in specific tactical calculations. On the other hand, betting on the defeat and collapse of Russia, the belief that China can be swindled and deceived (by convincing it of the absence of a containment strategy and plans to crush it) is, it seems, the only bet of the globalists. And the last one.

Russophobia. A Brief History of Hate
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Egor Kholmogorov
Russian publicist, member of the Writers' Union of Russia. Author of works devoted to Russian nationalism, the history of Russia, the Russian Orthodox Church, conservative thought; documentary filmmaker and film critic.

[Regnum] Why is Europe hostile to Russia? - such a question was asked in 1867 in his work "Russia and Europe" by a biologist and philosopher, a wonderful Russian thinker Nikolai Danilevsky . He pointed out the hypocrisy of Western politicians and society, who unleashed the Crimean War against Russia in 1854, accusing our country of violating the European order, and when Prussia and Austria attacked little Denmark in 1864 to take away two provinces from it, no one in " enlightened Europe" was not indignant at such a robbery.

"What's the difference?" Danilevsky asked. Russia will always remain a stranger to the West.

“An unconscious feeling, a historical instinct makes Europe dislike Russia. Where does the impartiality of the gaze go? Everything that is distinctively Russian and Slavic seems to her worthy of contempt... A Russian in their eyes can claim the dignity of a person only when he has already lost his national image...

Read articles about Russia in European newspapers that express the opinions and passions of the enlightened part of the public; finally, trace the attitude of European governments towards Russia. You will see that in all these various spheres the same spirit of hostility reigns, taking, according to circumstances, the form of incredulity, malevolence, hatred or contempt ...

A satisfactory explanation of both this political injustice and this public hostility can only be found in the fact that Europe recognizes Russia and the Slavs as something alien to itself, and not only alien, but also hostile.

Danilevsky gave an answer to his own question: the difference is that Russia and the West are two separate, in many respects alien to each other civilizations. It is to the Russian thinker that the honor of a great discovery in historical science belongs - the idea of the plurality of human civilizations and the multilinear nature of historical development .

Rejection of Russia as a different civilization
Gradually, this idea of the multiplicity of variants of historical development was also mastered in Western historical science, which refused to level the whole world according to the Western standard. However, this did not lessen the Russophobia of the West - while reluctantly recognizing the right to independent development of China, India, the countries of the Middle East, the West still denies Russia's right to be itself.

This has to be connected with the fact that Russia has always thought of itself not just as one of the civilizations, but as the guardian of the sacred world order, the heir to the Roman and Byzantine Empires, the Third Rome. And this position of Russian civilization is contrary to the plans of the West for the eternal retention of world hegemony.

It is no coincidence that the main motive of anti-Russian propaganda in the world is the imaginary “unworthiness” of Russia, its inferiority and inferiority in comparison with the West and the alleged threat to the world coming from it.

So, at the heart of Western Russophobia lies the rejection of Russia as a different, independent civilization compared to the West and the rejection of Russia as a threat to the world domination of the West.

The development of European Russophobia begins with the era of the formation of the Russian national state , when Orthodox Moscow, under Grand Duke Vasily II, rejected the Florentine union with Roman Catholicism, and under Ivan III turned into a great power.

"Amazed Europe, at the beginning of Ivan’s reign, barely aware of the existence of Muscovy, squeezed between the Tatars and Lithuanians, was stunned by the sudden appearance of a huge empire on its eastern borders, and Sultan Bayezid himself, before whom Europe trembled, for the first time heard the arrogant speech of a Muscovite," Karl Marx wrote, who himself held Russophobic views.

At first, the West's acquaintance with Russia in the reviews of Western travelers was dominated by balanced, interested, and sometimes commendable reviews. However, there were forces in Europe that were directly interested in the spread of Russophobia - these are the countries neighboring Russia: the Polish-Lithuanian state and the Livonian Order, which owned the lands taken from Rus' in the difficult XIII century and feared demands for their return.

The invention of "Muscovy"
The Polish king Sigismund I , after Russia returned Smolensk to its structure in 1514, began to distribute propaganda materials in Europe, which claimed that Poland was a defensive line of Europe, protecting it from the threat from "Moscow barbarians, Asians and heretics."

Polish propagandists launched the term "Muscovy", trying to prove that Russia has nothing to do with Rus. They tried to force authors in European countries to apply the term "Russia" only to Galicia, which was in the possession of Poland, and to call our country and people exclusively "Muscovy" and "Muscovites."
Rus is a Russian poetic rendering of the name Russia, similar to calling the United States America.
Russophobic hysteria in Europe became especially active in the era of the Livonian War of Ivan the Terrible, when Russia liquidated the Livonian Order and advanced on Poland, liberating the Belarusian lands. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Sweden and Denmark were simultaneously in a state of hostilities against Russia. In Europe, Russophobic “flying sheets” began to actively spread, which depicted “Moscow barbarians” who were cracking down on Livonian inhabitants, shooting women hanging from trees with bows.

To deny Russia's rights to Livonia, the thesis began to spread that power in Russia is a "tyranny," headed by a "cruel despot" Tsar "Ivan the Terrible," who tortures both his own and other people's subjects. However, sympathy for the subjects of the imaginary tyrant was also not shown, since they were declared "slaves", unworthy of freedom and statehood.

During this period, the main line of European Russophobia was formed - Russia is a country with a barbaric people and a cruel government, which does not have the right to pursue its own policy in Europe and must be restrained in Asia by the forces of its neighboring countries, which should be helped by all of Europe.

However, attempts to resolve the Russian issue by force, with the help of direct intervention in Russia in the era of troubled times, failed. In the 17th and early 18th centuries, Russophobia in Europe did not have a pronounced character. While fighting with Russia for Ukraine, Poland was never able to win even Catholic Europe to its side.

The propaganda attempts of Charles XII during the Northern War to appeal to the “barbarism of the Muscovites” were not successful, although in Sweden itself, Russophobia went through the roof during this period.

"Nature itself gave them a base and slavish disposition," the Swede Johan Jerne, who visited Russia, gurgled.

"Testament of Peter the Great"
A massive surge of Russophobia in Europe was associated with the policy of the French cabinet in the middle of the 18th century.

"You know, of course, and I repeat it very clearly, that the sole purpose of my policy towards Russia is to remove it as far as possible from European affairs. Everything that can plunge her into chaos, the former darkness, is beneficial to me," King Louis XV reported in a dispatch to a French agent in St. Petersburg.

With the outbreak of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, hostility towards Russia, the main opponent of France's revolutionary and imperial conquests in Europe, only intensified. The caricatures in the French press of that time on Alexander Suvorov look especially absurd, in which the Russian field marshal was portrayed as a huge bearded cannibal.

The famous fake was launched into the world press - "The Testament of Peter the Great", in which, on behalf of the Russian emperor, plans were laid out for Russia to establish world domination through continuous wars.

The appearance of this fake in Europe was attributed to the French transvestite spy Chevalier de Eon, who performed spy missions, including at the Russian court during the reign of Elizabeth Petrovna. However, the final form of the fake was given by the Polish Russophobic ideologue Mikhail Sokolnitsky (who first launched the term “Empire of Darkness” in relation to Russia). Sokolnitsky's fakes were useful to Napoleon Bonaparte for the propaganda justification of the invasion of Russia in 1812.

"Napoleon planned to throw back the colossal power of the tsars to Asia in order to make Moscow the gates of European civilization and place there the revived and powerful Kingdom of Poland as an advanced guard," said propaganda brochures during the invasion of Russia by the combined forces of Europe led by Bonaparte .

The behavior of the French in Moscow, the looting and desecration of churches, terror against civilians directly followed from the postulates of Russophobic propaganda. However, the French army suffered a crushing defeat in Russia. Now it was the turn of the Russian cartoonists to ridicule the crow-eating French.

And the French press needed to explain the coming of the Cossacks to Paris, as well as the fact that the Russian army was humane and disciplined. The explanation was found in the fact that the most severe discipline reigns in Russia, which only allows the Russians to achieve victories, besides, the Russians fought dishonestly - "General Frost" was on their side.

"Russia in 1839"
During the period of Russian hegemony in Europe after the Patriotic War of 1812, Russophobic propaganda needed to undermine its authority. Its most notable product was the extensive book of the French Marquis Adolphe de Custine (one of the most famous open homosexuals in Europe at that time) Russia in 1839.

Custine's book is a paradoxical fusion of hateful Russophobic declarations (“Russia is a camp discipline instead of a state system”, “However vast this empire, it is nothing but a prison, the key to which is kept by the emperor”) and enthusiastic descriptions of his immediate observations.

Here, for example, is how Custin described Moscow and the Kremlin:

"A huge number of church domes, sharp as needles, spiers and bizarre turrets burned in the sun above clouds of road dust ... Each dome is crowned with a cross of the finest filigree work, and the crosses, sometimes gilded, sometimes silvered, are connected with the same chains to each other.

Try to imagine this picture, which cannot even be conveyed with paints, and not what our poor language has! The play of light reflected by this airy city is a real phantasmagoria in broad daylight, which makes Moscow the only city that has no equal in Europe ... The Kremlin is worth a trip to Moscow!

This is not a palace, of which there are many, but a whole city, having, as they say, a mile in circumference. And this city, the root from which Moscow grew, is the line between Europe and Asia. Under the successors of Genghis Khan, Asia rushed to Europe for the last time; leaving, she hit the ground with her fifth - and from here the Kremlin arose.

Do you know what the Kremlin walls are? The word "walls" conjures up in the mind the idea of something too ordinary, too small. The walls of the Kremlin are a mountain range… If the giant called the Russian Empire had a heart, I would say that the Kremlin is the heart of this monster."

Almost everything in Russia arouses interest and admiration in Custine, he is especially attracted by something that does not look like Europe, which speaks of an original Russian civilization. However, the French writer drowns this admiration in strained and aggressive Russophobic declarations.

However, in the 19th century, the capital of Russophobia was not Paris, but London.

"There are no measures against the plans of the British against us"
English Russophobia was closely associated with racism and colonialism. The idea of the British about the "burden of the whites", which allegedly gives them the right to rule the world, spread a sense of racial superiority not only to the colored peoples of Asia and Africa, but also to white Russians.

"Every Russian is the sweetest person ... like an Asian, he is charming. And only when he insists that the Russians be treated not as the most western of the eastern peoples, but, on the contrary, as the easternmost of the western peoples, does it turn into an ethnic misunderstanding, which, really, is not easy to deal with," said the English poet- mason Rudyard Kipling .

He was the closest associate and like-minded of another prominent Russophobe - the oligarch Cecil Rhodes , the creator of the Round Table, an organization of the British elite that sought to strengthen the rule of the British Empire on the basis of Masonic ideology.

England perceived the Russian Empire as the main threat to its geopolitical power.

“There are no measures against the plans of the British against us, and if the execution stops in this, then this is nothing more than powerlessness to harm us,” Emperor Nicholas I emphasized.
And then he invaded the Balkans in 1854.
Russophobic rhetoric dominated the English press. Demonstrative contempt for Russia and the Russians, exploiting the image of the "Russian bear", in her side by side with the fear of increasing her power.

British Prime Minister Viscount Palmerston was credited with the phrase: "How hard it is to live when no one is at war with Russia." Even if this saying is legendary, Palmerston's authentic letters reveal his fear of Russia:

“Sooner or later, Russia will become a power as powerful as the ancient Roman Empire. She will be able to become the mistress of Asia (with the exception of British India) whenever she wishes. When ... the railways shorten distances, her power over people will become enormous, her funds will be gigantic, and her ability to transport troops over long distances will be awe-inspiring, ”the English politician complained in a letter in 1865.

A feature of the Russophobic propaganda that was spreading in the Anglo-Saxon countries was the active use of revolutionaries from Russia for it.

"A smart nation would conquer a very stupid one"
Beginning with Alexander Herzen, the publisher of Kolokol, who was financially supported by the banking house of the Rothschilds, Western Russophobic propaganda is increasingly beginning to penetrate into Russia itself. Russophobia becomes an indispensable part of the views of a “progressive” person who is hostile to Orthodoxy, autocracy and nationality.

The great Russian poet Fyodor Ivanovich Tyutchev wrote to his daughter Anna in 1867, that is, after the reforms of Alexander II :

“It would be possible to give an analysis of the modern phenomenon, which is acquiring an increasingly pathological character. This is the Russophobia of some Russian people - by the way, very revered.

They used to tell us, and they really believed that in Russia they hated lack of rights, the lack of freedom of the press, etc., that it was precisely because they love Europe so dearly that it undoubtedly possesses everything that is not in Russia. And what do we see now?

As Russia, seeking greater freedom, asserts itself more and more, the dislike of these gentlemen for her only intensifies. And on the contrary, we see that no violations in the field of justice, morality and even civilization, which are allowed in Europe, did not in the least reduce addiction to it. In a word, in the phenomenon that I have in mind, there can be no question of principles as such, only instincts act here.

Blaming the liberal Westerners, Tyutchev wrote the lines: “No matter how you bend before her, gentlemen, / You will not win recognition from Europe: / In her eyes you will always be / Not servants of enlightenment, but serfs.”

This image of servility to "Europe", servility under it, became the key to the characterization of Western liberals by Russian patriots and Slavophiles. It was no coincidence that Fyodor Dostoevsky put the Russophobic passage that has become a classic in the mouth of the footman Smerdyakov:

“It would be good if these same Frenchmen conquered us then: a smart nation would conquer a very stupid one and annex it to itself. There would even be other orders, sir.”

The internal Russophobia of the liberal intelligentsia was seen precisely as a symptom of lackey consciousness.

"Society of Friends of Russian Freedom"

An important component of anti-Russian propaganda was the change in public opinion in the United States towards Russophobia. The Americans were friendly towards Russia, which supported the United States both during the war for independence and the civil war. However, since 1887, the activities of the American journalist George Kennan began to expose the "monstrous conditions of royal exile" in which the revolutionaries were.

The Russian representative in the United States, Botkin, described Kennan's Russophobic agitation as follows :

“He said that he came from Siberia, brought with him valuable materials to prove the inhumanity of the Russian authorities and the failure of the state system in Russia. Kennan began by placing sensational articles in newspapers and magazines about the life of convicts in Siberia. Then he began to travel around America and lecture. He went on stage in shackles, dressed as a convict, through a magic lantern he showed various horrors and weaved incredible nonsense about Russia.

Objective modern researchers have discovered Kennan's direct financial connection with the New York oligarchs who hated Russia, in particular Jacob Schiff, the future sponsor of Japan's war against Russia. At the initiative of Kennan in 1890-1891. in London and New York, the "Society of Friends of Russian Freedom" arose, which took over the coordination of anti-Russian propaganda in the West.

The most important role in them was played by Sergei Stepnyak-Kravchinsky , a terrorist who fled to London after the murder of the chief of the gendarme corps. Over time, the Society moved from propaganda to direct support for terrorism against Russia during the events of 1905-1907.

"Eradication of Asian Influence"
The October Revolution of 1917 made it possible to strengthen Russophobic propaganda, adding to it the exploitation of the fear of the Western inhabitants before the invasion of the Bolsheviks and the activities of the Comintern. And the death of the Russian Empire was used for statements about the inferiority of Russians, incapable of self-government, and therefore in need of external conquest.

“The Russian spirit as such, apparently, is not adapted to creative creative activity; almost everything that Russia has created in external and internal affairs, it owes to the Germans who were in the Russian service, or to the Baltic Germans, ” said a school textbook published in Germany in 1925.

And almost the same word for word was repeated in his essay “My Struggle” by the Nazi Fuhrer.

Russophobia was one of the most important components of Hitler's propaganda, unfolding especially widely with the German attack on the USSR. The goal of the war was openly proclaimed to be the destruction of the state (and not only the Soviet, but in general any statehood in Russia), and Russian culture, and the genocide of the Russian people.

The order of Field Marshal Walther von Reichenau read:

"The main goal of the campaign is the complete defeat of state power and the eradication of Asian influence on European culture ... No historical and artistic values bin the East matter."

For agitation among German soldiers, brochures were published with portraits of Soviet prisoners under the characteristic title "Underhuman". “A Russian sees a higher being in a German,” the German Secretary of State Herbert Backe taught the future occupiers in June 1941.

"Moscow"
During the Cold War, Russophobic propaganda reached its highest intensity and sophistication.

Its principles were formulated by George Frost Kennan, the great-nephew of the ideologue of American Russophobia. In his "Long Telegram" to the US State Department, which formulated the ideological principles of the Cold War. Kennan called on the West to "contain" Russia from a position of strength.

A significant part of the Russophobic propaganda of the West was now directed at the Soviet Union itself - both to form pro-Western sentiments among the Soviet intelligentsia, and to provoke "titular" nationalism in the union republics.

In 1959, the US Congress passed the "Enslaved Peoples Act", in which the US administration was charged with supporting the "fight for freedom" from the "enslaved by the imperialist policy of Russia" peoples, among which were named Lithuania, and Ukraine, and the fictional Cossackia and Idel- Ural, and even Tibet.

During this period, not without the help of Western radio voices, Russophobia for domestic consumption began to actively spread in the Soviet Union itself, largely succeeding the pre-revolutionary “smerdyakovism” and official Russophobia of the first years of Soviet power.

This phenomenon was described by academician Igor Shafarevich in his work "Russophobia". In particular, he made a selection of typical Russophobic statements: “Russia has brought more evil into the world than any other country”; "Byzantine and Tatar imperfections"; “The stench of messianic “election”, the centuries-old pride of the “Russian idea”; “A country that has been swelling and spreading over the centuries like sour dough”; “The fact that the Russians in this country are the worst of all is logical and fair” ...

And as a summary of everything: the only path available to Russians to happiness and freedom is the American occupation. However, Russophobia inside Russia is a separate big topic, let's not digress.

Washington-sponsored propaganda of Ukrainian separatism has reached a special intensity. It was the Ukrainian Nazi ideologists who made up the most aggressive detachment of Russophobia.

A typical example is the book by Pavlo Shtepa "Muscovite" published in 1968 in Canada, which became a real textbook of Ukrainian Russophobia. “Laziness and vagrancy of a Muscovite”, “Theft of a Muscovite”, “Godlessness, debauchery of a Muscovite”, “Slavery and despotism of a Muscovite”, “Creative barrenness of a Muscovite” - these are the headings of the chapters of this book.

Let us pay special attention to the thesis about the “creative barrenness” of Russians, which is repeated in both Nazi and Ukrainian propaganda, so contrasting with the reality of the great Russian culture, which gave the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, the music of Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev, which led man into space. All the countless achievements of the Russians are declared to actually belong to representatives of other peoples or "meaningless historical accident."

The particular fixation of Russophobes on the idea of “Russian mediocrity” is due to the fact that the most important motive of Russophobia is the denial of the fact that Russian civilization is original and is not one of the subdivisions of the Western one.

"We did not let ourselves be robbed"
The end of communist power in Russia did not lead to the curtailment of Russophobic propaganda in the West. In this propaganda, only an additional contemptuous undertone appeared. Russia was seen as the "loser" in the Cold War and called for to finish it off.

Russophobic rhetoric became especially aggressive after the reunification of Crimea with Russia in 2014 and the imposition of Western sanctions.

US President Barack Obama proudly declared that the Russian economy was torn to shreds by the sanctions. And Republican Senator John McCain, one of the most prominent Russophobes, called Russia "a gas station pretending to be a country."

In 2022, “a gas station country with an economy torn to shreds” withstood the heaviest Western sanctions. However, Russophobic propaganda continues. There are fakes about “Russian war crimes” and calls to “cancel” Russian culture.

Back in the spring of 2014, Venice was hung with such posters: “Help fight the Russian Empire by abolishing culture”, “Russian culture has cherished superiority over other peoples for generations”, “Stop being fascinated by their culture: every Dostoevsky is followed by a rain of rockets”, “ Refuse the funding, the support that you provided to Russian artists and musicians. There should be no space for their work. The press should not mention them”, “Support the culture of Ukraine - a truly free European nation”.

Russophobia has been a constant phenomenon in world history for several centuries. It is based on fear of the greatness and power of Russia and hostility to the fact that it is a separate civilization, living and creating not at the behest of the West.

“One of the reasons for the centuries-old Russophobia, the undisguised malice of these Western elites towards Russia is precisely that we did not allow ourselves to be robbed during the period of colonial conquests, we forced the Europeans to trade for mutual benefit. This was achieved by creating a strong centralized state in Russia, which developed and strengthened itself on great moral values ... on Russian culture and the Russian word open to all, ” Vladimir Putin emphasized in his speech on September 30, 2022, dedicated to the admission of Donetsk to the Russian Federation. and Luhansk republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.

Western Russophobia has never been able to cause significant damage to Russia, except in those cases when the West has been able to successfully export Russophobia to Russia itself, undermining our values, destroying our home from within. It is precisely this, the most dangerous kind of Russophobia, that should be resisted first of all.

PS

Of course, in a short article it is impossible to cover the whole picture, so I refer the interested reader to other works: the book by Guy Mettan “The West is Russia. Millennium War. The history of Russophobia from Charlemagne to the Ukrainian crisis” and the book by Natalia Tanshina “Scary Tales about Russia. Classics of European Russophobia and not only. Well, do not forget about the classic study of our internal Russophobia, written by the wonderful Russian thinker Igor Shafarevich.

Maybe because the Ottoman Empire who Russia attacked was considered a major power and thus a question of 'balance of power' among the other major players. Denmark was not a major power that could influence the balance of power game the big boys were playing. Interesting the Germans rationalized then, as Moscow is doing now, that a large ethnic population in the territories justified the annexation. Now where was Russia when the Germans did that?

#2  No mention is made of: Oriental Despotism: A Comparative Study of Total Power, by Karl Wittfogel (1896–1988), Yale University Press, 1957. The book offers an explanation for the presence of despotic governments in "Oriental" societies, including most importantly Russia and the Soviet Union. As valuable today as the day it was published.

#6  It's one thing to dislike Russians or to fear Russians. But you should remember their troubles with Western Europe have almost always been instigated by Western Europeans. If you feel the need to exterminate Russians, you are no better than the most famous of these Western Europeans, Adolph Hitler.

I don't want to hear about democracy either. Not from the home of Joe Biden.

#9  I don't pretend to know what goes on in Putin's mind, whether or not he aspires to resurrect the Soviet Union. But I do not believe he has the wherewithal to threaten Western Europe. If he was to invade any of the Baltic countries or Poland he would be met with the full force of NATO and rightfully so. He would be defeated.

But the spheres of influence established after WWII seem now to be in a state of flux with NATO's continual expansion to the East. I believe NATO has gone far enough and has no business whatsoever in Ukraine. Joe Biden has no legitimate business in Ukraine any more than Victoria Nuland, John McCain or Lindsey Graham did. The CIA has no business in Ukraine.

If Putin fears a U.S. Naval base in Sevastopol, ruthless dictator though he may be, he has good reason and he is taking action to prevent such a development.

#10  But you should remember their troubles with Western Europe have almost always been instigated by Western Europeans.

Russia has been expanding for hundreds of years. Beginning from Muscovy before the Mongol invasion, into Europe, the arctic, Ottoman empire, the Stans, Mongolia, Siberia, and the far east reaching a peak that stretched from Berlin to the Kuriles (before selling to USA, Alaska) conquering 200 distinct ethnicities. Hardly a peace loving people.

Taking more recent history into account, during WW1, it was Russia who invaded into Germany (East Prussia) while Germany was attacking France. The Russians got their asses handed to them at Tannenberg.

It was Germany and Russia together who started WW2 in Europe by jointly invading Poland. After the war, the Cold War began when the Russians reneged on the Yalta Conference agreement for free elections in Europe, holding the conquered nations in a Communist vise grip until 1989.

After the dissolution of Soviet Union, there were two invasions of Chechnya, one of Georgia and two of Ukraine. Each to grab and annex territory. I will concede the first Chechen invasion was justified because of Chechen terrorism, but Russia lost that war.

Pence Makes Some Surprising Remarks Supporting Trump, Demanding Garland Justify Indictment
[Red State] I wonder if Mike Pence got the message that many of us thought he did in his campaign with the recent remark he made about Ukraine.

Now, granted, he didn’t have much of a campaign to begin with. But he had even less of one when he said that he had a problem with Joe Biden because he wasn’t providing aid to Ukraine quickly enough during his CNN town hall. That said to so many in the Republican base that he didn’t give a darn about their concerns on the matter or why there seems to be no end in sight to the endless pouring out of money to Ukraine.

Pence made some remarks at the North Carolina GOP convention on Saturday about the Trump indictment, and they made me wonder if he’s trying to get some of the base back by talking about the weaponization of the government against former President Donald Trump.

Trump Names Hunter Biden As His Running Mate So DOJ Will Stop Investigating Him
[BEE] PALM BEACH, FL — Former President Donald Trump seemed to have outsmarted federal prosecutors once again, as reports out of Mar-A-Lago indicated the 45th President and current 2024 candidate had chosen Joe Biden's son, Hunter, as his running mate, leading the Department of Justice to halt all investigations against Trump.

"It really is a brilliant, ’4D chess' type of move," said disheveled political analyst Steve Bannon after Trump made his announcement. "There's no way the DOJ or the FBI will do any investigating when Hunter Biden is attached to the campaign. Checkmate, losers!"

Within minutes of naming Biden his new running mate, Trump was notified by the government that the indictments against him were being thrown out, leading Trump to make a celebratory post on his Truth Social account. "TRUMP WINS ONCE AGAIN," he said. "I REMAIN UNDEFEATED AGAINST THE CORRUPT DEEP STATE'S EFFORTS TO TAKE ME OUT. HUNTER BIDEN IS MY NEW RUNNING MATE, MAKING ME INVINCIBLE TO ANY INVESTIGATION. HE'S EVEN MORE TRUSTWORTHY THAN MY PREVIOUS RUNNING MATE. SO MUCH WINNING!"

Unable to continue their quest against Trump, DOJ officials admitted defeat. "It's over," said a source within the department. "We're not allowed to go anywhere near Hunter Biden, so Trump and his campaign can now run roughshod. Much like the women Hunter hires at night, our hands are tied."

At publishing time, new vice presidential candidate Hunter Biden, who had last been seen passed out in an alley after a 3-day crack cocaine bender, was unavailable for comment.

Transgender individuals at greater risk of mental health problems
[YALE School of Public Health] Correction: The article "Reduction in Mental Health Treatment Utilization Among Transgender Individuals After Gender-Affirming Surgeries: A Total Population Study," published in The American Journal of Psychiatry on Oct. 4, 2019, has been corrected following a review of the study’s methodology and some of its conclusions. This news item has likewise been corrected to reflect that the authors’ original conclusion was too strong in suggesting that the study’s findings support providing gender-affirming surgeries to transgender individuals who seek them.

The original news item contained the heading "Mental Health Outcomes Improve for Transgender Individuals After Surgery, Study Finds." In a letter published in the August 2020 issue of The American Journal of Psychiatry, the study authors write that, although this study fills important gaps in the research, "Our conclusion based on the findings at hand in the article, which used neither a prospective cohort design nor a randomized controlled trial design, was too strong."

The study, which reviewed 10 years of medical data for the entire population of Sweden, is one of the only analyses of transgender individuals’ mental health treatment for depression, anxiety disorders, and suicide based on an entire country’s population.

In this study, the researchers analyzed medical outcomes between 2005 and 2015 for 2,679 individuals in the Swedish population who had received a diagnosis of gender incongruence.

The study found that transgender individuals who had received a diagnosis of gender incongruence were:

  • six times more likely to have a mood or anxiety disorder than the general population.
  • three times as likely to be prescribed antidepressants and antianxiety medications.
  • more than six times as likely to attempt suicide resulting in hospitalization.

The study also found that transgender individuals who had undergone gender-affirming surgery were significantly less likely to seek mental health treatment for depression and anxiety disorders as a function of years since the procedure.

#8  The military used not take recruits on anti-depressants. The trans folk are predominantly taking them. Perhaps targeting them as priority recruits is working against readiness.

Crashes Involving Tesla's Driverless-Assistance System Are Far More Numerous Than Originally Reported
[PJ] Tesla’s autopilot system is far more dangerous than previously reported. In June 2019, regulators reported only 217 crashes of the driverless-assistance system with three fatalities.

But a recent study by the Washington Post shows that since 2019, there have been 736 crashes directly linked to Autopilot, including 17 fatalities. These statistics have raised questions about how safe the driverless system is.

Tesla’s creator, Elon Musk, insists the system is safe and that he had a "moral obligation" to deploy it.

"At the point of which you believe that adding autonomy reduces injury and death, I think you have a moral obligation to deploy it even though you’re going to get sued and blamed by a lot of people," Musk said last year. "Because the people whose lives you saved don’t know that their lives were saved. And the people who do occasionally die or get injured, they definitely know — or their state does."

But former NHTSA senior safety adviser Missy Cummings, a professor at George Mason University’s College of Engineering and Computing, isn’t so sure.

"Tesla is having more severe — and fatal — crashes than people in a normal data set," she said in response to the figures analyzed by the Post. She said that one likely cause is the expanded rollout over the past year and a half of Full Self-Driving. This brings driver assistance to city and residential streets. "The fact that ... anybody and everybody can have it. ... Is it reasonable to expect that might be leading to increased accident rates? Sure, absolutely."

#3  Yeah. It's like nobody has bothered to research why some things that people across a broad range of the intelligence spectrum can do with relative ease but even powerful computing hardware can't.

#4  You can feed the AI all the training data you want. There will always be new corner cases, or combinations thereof, that the AI can't handle. Even if/when emergent properties arise in the AI, any fault will now be the liability of the car maker, not the driver. The lawyers will have a field day.

Mr. Bean Actor Says The Electric Car 'Honeymoon' Is Over
[ZERO] The actor and comedian behind the popular Mr. Bean character has called on drivers to hold off buying an electric vehicle (EV), saying the environmental benefits do not stack up.

Rowan Atkinson, a long-time motor enthusiast with a degree and master’s in electrical engineering, said current EV technology was more harmful to the environment than it was worth.

"Increasingly, I’m feeling that our honeymoon with electric cars is coming to an end, and that’s no bad thing: we’re realising that a wider range of options need to be explored if we’re going to properly address the very serious environmental problems that our use of the motor car has created," Atkinson wrote in The Guardian newspaper.

He pointed to figures released by automotive giant Volvo revealing that greenhouse gas emissions during the EV production process were 70 percent higher than building a petrol car.

    "How so?" Atkinson said.

"The problem lies with the lithium-ion batteries fitted currently to nearly all-electric vehicles: they’re absurdly heavy, huge amounts of energy are required to make them, and they are estimated to last only upwards of 10 years.

    Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Turkey is cementing its occupation of Afrin through settlement construction
[NPASyria] For the past three years, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
has pushed for the construction of dozens of settlements across areas it occupies in Syria. In late 2022, North Press counted 19 such constructions in the region of Afrin and over 100 across all of Ottoman Turkish-occupied Syria and Idlib. The latest count features at least 28 settlements in Afrin alone. The Ottoman Turkish government recently announced that it would build housing units for nearly a quarter of a million Syrians within the next three years. What explains the rise in settlement construction?

Turkey’s settlements in Syria are particularly concentrated around Jarabulus, al-Bab and Azaz (the so-called ’Euphrates Shield’ area), where North Press counted 45 settlements in mid-2022, as well as Afrin, which the Ottoman Turkish army and its proxy forces, the Syrian National Army (SNA), occupied in 2018. The invasion led to the exodus of up to 300,000 Kurdish inhabitants, according to the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES). Whereas the region was once 97 percent Kurdish, only one-third of the indigenous population now remains, UN statistics show.
