Study: ADHD meds don't boost severe heart risks
"These data provide reassurance that the thing most concerning – death – is not any higher in users of ADHD medications than non-users," says senior author Sean Hennessy, an associate professor of epidemiology at Penn. "For kids who will benefit from ADHD treatment, the potential risk of a cardiovascular event should not dissuade parents or caregivers from giving a child or adolescent these drugs."
As long as the kid doesn't get overdosed, I suppose.

My kid gets along best at 30mg of Vyvanse, which is one of the better time-released methamphetamine-based stimulants out there today. More than that causes problems, especially if the drug wears off suddenly. Adults usually get along fine on about 40mg. You've gotta be patient for several months then it kicks in good. I've got friends whose doctors are prescribing over 100mg total per day of other methamphetamine-based stimulants. I've gotta wonder about that.

Ben Ali trial begins in Tunisia
[Iran Press TV] A military court in Tunisia has begun the trial of ousted President-for-Life Zine El Abidine Ben Ali,
...who departed by popular demand in January, 2011, precipitating the Arab Spring...
his wife Leila Trabelsi and his Interior Minister Rafik Belhadj Kazem.

The three are accused of plotting against national security as well as inflaming riots and looting in Tunisia, Xinhua reported.

The Tunisian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the former head of the police intervention units, the former director of public security, and the previous chief of special services were also placed in durance vile for their involvement in the case.

Ben Ali is said to have ordered troops to open fire on peaceful protesters.

Tunisian authorities had earlier prepared 18 legal cases against the deposed president. The cases include voluntary manslaughter and drug trafficking.

Ben Ali and his family decamped to Soddy Arabia on January 15 when protests, triggered by economic issues, escalated into mass demonstrations that eventually put an end to his 23-year-long authoritarian rule.

On May 11, a court handed over the file of the former president to the Tunisian military tribunal, in accordance with the current legislation.

Puerto Rico plans natural gas pipeline
[Iran Press TV] The governor of Puerto Rico has proposed a natural gas pipeline project worth USD 450 million that would cut through the territory's most sensitive habitats.

Governor Luis Fortuno dubbed the project "The Green Way," insisting that it is the best and most environmentally friendly way to reduce the country's high utility bills, The News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported.

The government said that the cheaper natural gas would save USD 1 billion per year for an island with a population of 4 million. It also argued that the project would help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 64 percent.

Corruption allegations have emerged that the governor has played favoritism towards a childhood friend, Pedro Ray Chacon, in awarding the largest contract for preliminary studies -- worth USD 9.6 million -- to his construction firm Ray Engineers PSC. This is while the firm has no previous experience in pipeline construction.

Additionally, the bid for contractors was not made public, with Fortuno arguing that preliminary research contracts do not require an open bid.

Environmentalists and other activists also say the 92-mile pipeline will destroy fragile mountain ecosystems and expose local communities to hazards such as dangerous kabooms. It would cross 235 rivers and wetlands, impacting on up to 32 endangered species, including the Puerto Rican parrot, crested toad and boa, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.

Archaeologists pointed out that the proposed project could destroy historic sugar mill ruins and petroglyphs carved centuries ago by Taino Indians.

The nonprofit organization Casa Pueblo de Adjuntas has organized protests and gathered almost 8,000 online signatures in opposition to the pipeline. They claim that up to 23,000 families could be adversely affected.

Seventy-percent of Puerto Rico's power is generated by petroleum. Electricity on the island costs about 21 cents per kilowatt hour, while the average on the US mainland stands at 10 cents per kilowatt.

#1  ...Watch this one carefully. PR is in many ways even more liberal than California, and if this project goes through it may indicate that the environmental types may start finding themselves on the losing end when decisions have to be made between people actually, like, you know, living and wildlife/habitats.

US risks another recession: Obama
[Iran Press TV] President Barack B.O. Obama has warned that the United States may revert to another recession if Congress fails to raise the current debt ceiling.

"We could have a worse recession than we already had, a worse financial crisis than we already had," unless the debt ceiling is raised before it hits its limit of $14.29 trillion in mid-May, Rooters quoted Obama as saying in a pre-recorded interview broadcast by CBS News on Sunday.

Just as the White House and Congressional Republicans are at loggerheads over the debt and deficit, the US president made it clear that he does not expect either side to get everything it wants in the ongoing negotiations and that he must compromise with the Republicans.

Obama, however, noted that Republicans should not associate the debt ceiling decision with the spending cuts as part of deficit-reduction measures.

The debt ceiling set by Congress is a statutory limit imposed on the amount of money the US Treasury Department can borrow and if nothing is done by about August 2, there is a possibility that the government might default on its debt payment.

Even though Republicans have so far refused to increase the ceiling without future spending cuts, Obama said he is confident that Congress ultimately would raise the limit.

On Sunday, US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner added his voice to Obama's calls for Congress to raise the $14.29 trillion debt ceiling, saying failure to do so would drive up interest rates, push down household wealth and cause a double-dip recession.

The debt ceiling will be hit TODAY. Turbo Tax Timmy will start borrowing money from federal pensions to tide US over. This may last US through August 2. The US needs to borrow an extra $4 billion a day to match its deficit spending.

#7  A recession is inevitable when expenditure is shifted from government to the private sector.

But reagonomics 101, the economy and taxes revenues then rise strongly.

I think the US should default on its debts.

Think of a default as a tax on all those countries that have been free-riding on the USA for many years.

#8  I understand that there are good arguments in favor of raising the debt ceiling, but I'm very tired of hearing the argument: "Give me more money or the world as we know it will end, Armageddon will be upon us,and the planet will explode." How is that different from a guy in an alley pointing a gun at me and demanding my wallet?

And if this is so important, why didn't Turbo Tax Tim, BHO, and the rest of the Ivy League masters of the universe do a better job of planning for the possibility that the House would not vote to approve the increase?

Gingrich Blasts House GOP's Medicare Plan
Mr. Gingrich also said he would like to see the mandate implemented at the state level, with states experimenting with alternative approaches. But he said he should apply to all Americans.
Seems about right to me. And for those who can't afford it, they should have to do some kind of service if able in order to defray the costs. Like build a double fence along the US-Mexican border. Or plant mines between the double fences. Or capture alligators for use in the moat between the fences. And for those who do poor quality work, they can feed the alligators.

Huckabee says no to US presidential bid
[Iran Press TV] Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has announced that he will not make a run for the White House in the 2012 US presidential election.

"My answer is clear and firm. I will not seek the Republican nomination for president this year. I'm going to gladly continue doing what I do," Huckabee told viewers at the end of his Fox News program.

Huckabee -- ranking high in polls among Republicans -- lost the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 to John Maverick McCain.
... the Senator-for-Life from Arizona, former presidential candidate and even more former foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution...

He then became an author, speaker and contributor to Fox News, where he makes about USD 500,000 a year in a contract that goes through 2012.

Associates also noted that Huckabee was not a big supporter of fundraising, an essential aspect of a campaign.

"You feel that's all you end up doing," he said Friday on Fox.

The announcement has now added more uncertainty to the US presidential vote.

Others considering a run for the GOP nomination include Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Mama Grizzly Palin,
... the babe libs love to hate ...
Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and real estate magnate Donald Trump.

Newly appointed PML-Q Minister Amir Muqam resigns
[Dawn] The newly appointed PML (Q) Federal Minister for Production, Ameer Muqam resigned on Sunday, ending a standoff between the minister and the government.
"Do you solemnly swear..."
"I quit!"

Muqam's resignation highlighted the increasing rift in 'Q' League, with several members requesting to sit in the opposition contrary to the wishes of the Chaudhary brothers.

Speaking to DawnNews earlier, Muqam said he was against the idea of PML-Q joining the government from the start but that he was forced to take the oath two weeks ago.

He said he was offered a ministry related to "Production" that does not exist.
An interesting way to put him in his place...

#7  "Th is about fear, that people are going to steal my job,” Santana said of the law. “No we ain’t. You don’t clean toilets and clean sheets, stop shucking and jiving.”

Actually, I do clean toilets and sheets, Mr. Santana. (Although what you actually mean is make beds). I rather suspect it's been a great many years since you have.

#8  Good point TW.

What Santana is basically saying is that if we enforce the law on illegal immigration where whould he find someone to clean his toilets and make his bed (and probably clean his yard and perhaps even wipe his smelly old ass).
