The Justice Department lent its support on Thursday to students who are suing Harvard University over affirmative action policies that they claim discriminate against Asian-American applicants, in a case that could have far-reaching consequences for the use of affirmative action in college admissions.
In a so-called statement of interest, the department supported the claims of the plaintiffs, a group of Asian-Americans rejected by Harvard. They contend that Harvard has systematically discriminated against them by artificially capping the number of qualified Asian-Americans from attending the school in order to advance less qualified students of other races.
"Harvard has failed to carry its demanding burden to show that its use of race does not inflict unlawful racial discrimination on Asian-Americans," the Justice Department said in its filing.
No drama as far as the health status of the ISS and crew are concerned, but this was the first time I've heard a real disagreement between the US and Russian sides on the Station. I'm sure they've had other disagreements, but not live over the loop like this. https://t.co/O3xOWo5MCC

IF they were unable to fix this leak (and they are fixing it already), the leak rate as it stood would have meant they would have run out of air in 18 days.
Sounds dramatic, but more a point about how small the leak is.

The Ad Kann organization revealed documentation from a Combatants for Peace organization tour where residents of the a-Dik village in western Samaria claim that area settlers release wild boar into the village.
An Ad Kann secret plant documented leaders of the tour, held four years ago in the village, describing how the settlers come at night with trucks full of of wild boar and release them in the village, and the damage that the animals cause residents and their crops.

If the Jewish settlers have the cajones to catch and corral wild boars, then actually get them into trucks, I'd just STFU.

So, it'll cost four to six times as much as advertised?
[LA Times] - The Los Angeles City Council voted to rename Rodeo Road as Obama Boulevard in honor of former President Obama, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced in a tweet Tuesday night.
"We’re thrilled that Angelenos and visitors will forever be reminded of the legacy of President @BarackObama when traveling across L.A.," he said in the tweet.
City Council President Herb Wesson proposed the name change in June 2017.
Not to be confused with the upscale Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills (dodged a bullet there! - ed), Rodeo Road is a 3.5-mile street that runs from near the Culver City border east to Mid-City.

[American Thinker] As a native Illinoisan, I can appreciate the wildly corrupt nature of this story. New York Governor Mario Cuomo received a $25,000 donation from the law firm representing Harvey Weinstein just six days before he called off an investigation into the movie mogul's behavior.
The explanation from the law firm for the donation could have been lifted from a Chicago alderman's playbook.
Page Six:
"Neither Mr. Boies, nor anyone from his firm, ever discussed Harvey Weinstein or Mr. Vance with Mr. Cuomo, or anyone from his office, at any time," the spokesperson told online political publication Capital and Main. "Mr. Boies is a longtime supporter of Mr. Cuomo and his contribution in June was consistent with his contributions to Mr. Cuomo over years past."
"Mr. Boies" is David Boies, a principal in the law firm of Boies Schiller & Flexner. Why would Boies even have to mention Weinstein? Cuomo knew Boies was representing Weinstein. Boies knew Cuomo knew. It's the old wink and a nod campaign contribution where no words are necessary. Cuomo knew why Boies was giving him the $25K and the governor knew what it was for and what he had to do for it.
Presto! Six days later, the prosecutor is told to drop the investigation.
Boies is going lower and lower...

Perhaps if Cuomo were a conservative Republican, there would be a feeding frenzy from the media that would dig up every last scrap of dirt that could be unearthed.
[Daily Caller] A Plainfield, Indiana Chick-fil-A owner plans to keep his employees busy even while the store is being remodeled this fall ‐ by paying them to do community service.
The restaurant will be closed for the remodel from the end of September through sometime in November, but its 100 employees will be "deployed throughout the area, serving with non-profit organizations including schools, parks and recreation, and Active Grace, a center that helps the homeless transition back to work," Fox 59 reports.
To owner Chris Spires, it’s just a way to give back to a community that has given so much to him.
"For the past 14 years, I have served the Plainfield community side by side with some amazing Team Members," Spires told Fox 59. "The support of our amazing community is the reason we are able to expand and renovate our restaurant. We are thrilled to spend some time while we are closed supporting organizations that make Plainfield and the surrounding areas such a wonderful place to live and do business."

[Breitbart] Barack Obama warned supporters that politicians had "monkeyed around" with elections, during a campaign speech at Kent State University in New Philadelphia, Ohio, on September 3, 2008.
Then-Senator Obama (D-IL) said (0:29 in the video below): "I come from Chicago. It’s not as if it’s just Republicans who have monkeyed around with elections in the past. Sometimes Democrats have, too. You know, whenever people are in power, they have this tendency to try to tilt things in their direction."
Obama called for establishing a "voting rights division" within the Department of Justice (DOJ) to combat "voter fraud" and what he said were efforts to "discourage people to vote."
On Wednesday, Florida Republican gubernatorial nominee Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) advised Floridians not to "monkey this up" by selecting a "socialist agenda" via a Democrat governor.
News media outlets such as The Hill and CNN framed the comment as racial, given that DeSantis’s Democrat opponent, Andrew Gillum, is black. Emphasis added.

My dad, of a time and place and service where racism didn't bother with code words, often used Obama's phrase ("Don't monkey around with that until it dries!"). Lord knows I was listening critically (cue Silver Haired Daddy), and it never even occurred to me that it might be racist.
This "monkey it up" thing, though, struck me instantly as a bigtime clanger (or baiting... NTTNAWWT). Is it common and benign (eeek!) in y'all's experience?
[Aljazeera] The US shouldn't count on Russia to force Iran out of Syria any time soon.
Speculation about tensions in Russian-Iranian relations after the collapse of the nuclear deal earlier this year has been circulating for a few months now. Tehran appears to be fearing a "betrayal", as Moscow is trying to negotiate with the United States on a variety of issues, including recently imposed economic sanctions.
In an August 22 press conference during a visit to Israel, US National Security Adviser John Bolton appeared to suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin approves of the withdrawal of Iranian forces from Syria.
"President Putin... had said it to me three weeks before. ...What he was saying was that Iranian interests in Syria were not coterminous with Russian interests in Syria and he would be content to see Iranian forces all sent back to Iran... we were talking about the complete return of both regular and irregular Iranian forces," Bolton said.
The following day, Bolton met his Russian counterpart, Nikolai Patrushev, head of Russia's Security Council, and it turned out that after all there wasn't such solid mutual understanding on the issue.
Following the five-hour meeting, Bolton told journalists that the issue, which had been previously discussed in Helsinki by Putin and US President Donald Trump, was brought up again but no major progress had been made. According to him, Patrushev offered the "geographic restriction of Iranian forces" in exchange for the suspension of oil sanctions on Iran; the offer was rejected outright by the Americans.
[Aljazeera] Donald Trump's comments referring to "large scale killings" of white farmers in South Africa last week may have mobilised the lunatic fringe in America and served the US president's narrow racist interests, but in South Africa, they backfired for the organisation that claims it "played a role" in his tweet.
Trump is held in such low regard among reasonable people outside the US that his endorsement signalled a setback for Afriforum, the fascist organisation that toured the US and the UK earlier this year in a bid to call attention to what it calls "the plight" of white farmers.

A snippet from a Forum article by Ernst Roets entitled 'The truth about apartheid, crimes against humanity and the use of the old flag.'
There is a new tyranny in South Africa. It is a tyranny of political correctness, a tyranny of distorted political thinking. We are dictated what our political thinking should be and if we do not comply, we are accused of evil conspiracy and oppression. The problem is that this very prescribed political ideology is nothing but a house of cards. It is an ideology that was not only built on a distortion of the past, but which depends on that distortion for its continued existence. It is an ideology that can be destroyed by common facts. Therefore, for this ideology to survive, it became necessary that the facts are swept under the carpet and that all kinds of fabrications of the past are being forced down our throats. If we resist, we will be denounced as apartheid apologists. However, to be falsely denounced as an apartheid apologist – despite our own unambiguous criticism of apartheid – is better than subservience to a false political ideology.

Makes a person wonder about every other world leader who had said nothing.
First time I heard of a home having a 'safe room' or 'panic room' was about some white SA farmers who made it to their room yet were still captured and mutilated; the room got breached somehow. This was some fifteen years ago. That is when I figured the attacks were not just about looting.
As I understand it, this petition was the last best chance to stop things from going south fast. Hope it sticks.
Whites are racist - Whites deserve violence - turn in your firearms - racism is against the law - the government owns your property. Pretty easy to see where this was going.
[Washington Examiner] There are 640 million people in Africa who have no access to electricity. And extreme environmentalists in the West aren’t pleased with the methods Africans are using to lower that number.
A recent report from the group Oil Change International laments the progress African nations are making in utilizing more fossil fuels, in part thanks to funds from China and the World Bank Group.
Many countries in Africa are confronted with issues of energy production. Algeria and South Africa have reserves of shale gas ‐ much cleaner than coal ‐ which could be extracted via fracking.
Affordable energy is the lifeblood of a healthy and growing economy, yet Oil Change International would rather Africa not develop its own affordable energy, despite the benefits for these needy countries. The group describes oil, gas, and coal as sources of "global warming, human rights abuses, war, national security concerns, corporate globalization, and increased inequality." Unfortunately, even the United Nations warns against shale gas extraction in Africa ‐ empowering environmentalists in their opposition.
In short, left-wing First World activists want to govern Africa their way ‐ heaven forbid they give way to what the locals want.
And it’s not just with energy. Food is another area. Hunger and starvation affect an estimated 230 million Africans. One success in the United States has been the advent of genetically modified crops, which can be bred for traits such as drought resistance. But this technology is also the bane of ideological environmentalists, who view it as tinkering with nature.
Genetically modified crops have struggled to maintain a foothold in Africa, despite their ability to help alleviate the famine, pest, and disease issues that ravage the continent. One environmentalist group, ActionAid, has a hand in poisoning the debate through its scare tactics directed at Africans. Representatives have warned of the "serious risks" accompanying genetically modified crops and claimed the crops would surrender the African farmer’s "sovereignty over the food system to the corporates."
However, multinationals are not attempting to control the food supply. A representative of one biotech firm clarifies that their work is being done for the public good. "We put the technology in open pollinated plants so that the farmers can save their seed, do their own crosses. There isn’t going to be a tech fee or royalty associated with it."
After Zambia’s president declared genetically modified food as "poison" and banned genetically modified food relief received from other countries, the country endured a famine. A significant example, this should encourage environmentalists to consider human lives the next time they make their recommendations.
The Left’s paternalism also extends to wildlife management.
Recently, strident animal liberation groups, led by PETA and the Humane Society of the United States, were in uproar over a Trump administration decision to allow the import of a small number of safari trophies, reversing an Obama-era ban.
Safari hunts are a controversial topic. At first glance it seems counterintuitive, but trophy hunting has actually been beneficial to conservation efforts in Africa. A century ago, the white rhino population of South Africa was pushed to the brink of extinction and then carefully brought back up to 800. Subsequently, managed trophy hunting was introduced, creating an incentive for landowners to have rhinos on their land and increase and protect their habitat. If there’s no reason to protect them, many Africans view animals we love ‐ elephants, lions, etc. ‐ as pests that destroy crops and prey on livestock.
Today, there are 20,000 white rhinos in South Africa ‐ one of the biggest conservation success stories on the continent. If PETA had its way, this never would have happened.
Africa has suffered a great deal due to its history of being at the mercy of colonial powers. Today's Left, with its twisted and patronizing form of neocolonialism, think they know what’s best for Africa and want to impose their vision on the continent.
But Africans deserve the right to self-determination, free of misguided Western do-gooders.

Hunger and starvation affect an estimated 230 million Africans.
It's not genetically modified food. It's the kleptocracy of their rulers. Rhodesia was once the bread basket of Africa. Stealing the land the competent farmers worked to pay off supporters who weren't farmers results in the usual non-productive consequences.

[American Thinker] What if this wasn't actually a hack? Instead, what if Mrs. Clinton allowed the Chinese to access her server, knowing full well that she was giving a foreign adversary full access to communications at the highest levels of the U.S. government?
Why would she do that? Conspiring with a foreign government or serving as an agent of that government is highly illegal. How ironic if Mrs. Clinton is doing what the Deep State and the media are accusing president Trump of having done. That's called projection.
Given the Clintons' pattern of behavior, one must assume they were being paid for giving the Chinese access. This is just another form of "pay to play." Mrs. Clinton would be paid not directly, but instead through her money laundromat, the Clinton Foundation.
The report also indicated there were limitations of a forensic investigation which was carried out in 2017 by the Boston FBI Field Office’s Inspection Division, stating, the structure of the investigation “and treatment of the investigation as a traditional espionage matter rather than a criminal investigation significantly hindered the ability of the investigative team to obtain full, accurate and timely information.”
Investigating domestic espionage is actually the J-O-B of the FBI.
[BBC] In our series of letters from African journalists, Elizabeth Ohene considers the controversial proposal to limit women to having three babies in Ghana.
Among the Ga, the people who are indigenous to Ghana's capital, Accra, a woman is entitled to a live sheep on the delivery of her 10th child. The word for it is "nyongmato".
I am not making this up even though it does sound like the kind of apocryphal story that is regularly made up.
Lots of very important people among the Gas can testify to this. Unfortunately, I have not met any woman who has actually got a live sheep for having given birth to 10 children.
Indeed, I have never met any woman who has had 10 children.
I don't know if I have been moving in the wrong circles, because I don't even know any woman who has had five children. OK, as soon as I wrote that, I realised I was wrong.
Actually, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is considerably more generous than 'nyongmato' (Ghanaian goat program), and far less restrictive.
[Townhall] t’s adorable when people talk about the rule of law. OK, let’s assume that Donald Trump broke the law under some bizarrely convoluted interpretation of the hateful and unconstitutional (in a world where our Constitution was properly understood) thicket of campaign finance statutes that somehow makes the guy who is being extorted a criminal for paying off the aging bimbos shaking him down. Why should we care? Because we don’t care. MSNBC can howl "impeachment" 300 times an hour and we still won’t care. Even if this was an actual crime and Donald Trump was guilty of it, we don’t care. Did he illegally pay off weather-beaten pole-clinger Stormy and also the one from Playboy who was actually hot? Don’t care.

[Townhall] While we don’t know all the details yet, I guarantee this new trade deal will save us tens of billions, perhaps hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade. Since the wall with Mexico costs about $25 billion, Trump just forced Mexico (whether they know it or not) to pay for the wall. Once again, Trump accomplished what establishment politicians of both parties said could never be done.
But with Donald J. Trump there are no such words as "never" or "impossible."Trump has chutzpah. Trump has cajones. Trump aims for the moon. Trump is combative and aggressive. Trump is driven to do what others say cannot be done. Trump is an eternal optimist. He accepts nothing less than #WINNING. I call those traits "The Trump Rules." He proves they work every day!
You can bet he’s gotten Mexico to pay for the wall- his No. 1 promise of the election. You can bet we will now begin building the wall. Just as I knew his popularity would go up after the terrible week of guilty pleas and nonstop media assaults last week.
Writing a book on the remarkable, one-in-a-billion "Trump Rules of Success" is easy. The book just keeps writing itself. Every week comes a new victory none of Trump’s critics ever believed possible. Trump just keeps writing the book for me!
Thank you, Mr. President. You really are THE GREATEST!

[RedState] Earlier this month, state and federal agents raided a compound near Taos, NM. There they found five adults, eleven malnourished children, and the corpse of a dead child who’d gone missing from Georgia. In addition, federal agents said there was evidence that the children were being trained to carry out school shooting.
In what was a surprising outcome in a case that involved an obvious homicide of some type, the judge hearing the case allowed all the defendants to go free on what amounted to their own recognizance. (And no, New Mexico law does not require kicking dangerous felons loose without bail.)
...Judge Emilio Chavez ruled to dismiss child abuse charges against 3 defendants because they didn’t have a preliminary hearing in the 10-day time frame required by New Mexico State law for defendants held in custody. I always say that it's not the Muzzies who are dangerous - we can cure them of their tendency for terrorism in a week, it's their "liberal" enablers.
#2
Not surprising at all if you had been paying attention.
The Judge was compelled by state law.
I would guess that the DA either refused to hold the hearing or was prevented from doing so - perhaps some three-letter-agency was holding onto the evidence?
They sure had no problem destroying the camp quickly.
This whole thing smells fishy. Even without a tinfoil hat.
#10
This one rests fully on the prosecution. They knew they had a deadline and blew it, leaving the judge absolutely no choice, the law was quite cleear. DA deserves a kick in the nuts and a boot in the ass on his way out of office. DA sheer incompetence, or maybe malfeasance - you decide.

The attempt to turn the Stormy Daniels unpleasantness into a campaign finance violation ‐ a weak attempt as it tuns out ‐ is starting to come into focus as a new Federal Elections Commission (FEC) complaint filed by The Committee to Defend the President alleges the Hillary Victory Fund (HVF) was "us[ing] state chapters as straw men to circumvent campaign donation limits and launder(ing) the money back to her campaign."
...HVF solicited six-figure donations from major donors, including Calvin Klein and "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, and routed them through state parties en route to the Clinton campaign. Roughly $84 million may have been laundered in what might be the single largest campaign finance scandal in U.S. history.
...On top of that, six-figure donations either never actually passed through state party accounts or were never actually under state party control, which adds false FEC reporting by HVF, state parties, and the DNC to the laundry list.
...Finally, as Donna Brazile and others admitted, the DNC placed the funds under the Clinton campaign’s direct control, a massive breach of campaign finance law that ties the conspiracy together.
Democratic donors, knowing the funds would end up with Clinton’s campaign, wrote six-figure checks to influence the election ‐ 100 times larger than allowed.

A new study has found that feminist theory research is 20 percent less likely to be funded than research on racial and ethnic theory, a funding disparity that may be even greater when feminist research is compared to academic research at large.
Polish researcher Aleksandra Cisłak-Wójcik published her study "Bias Against Research on Gender Bias" in the most recent issue of Scientometrics, an international academic journal that focuses on the quantitative issues surrounding scientific research.
While previous studies have looked at feminist theory research more generally, this is the first to use a comparative approach -- comparing the publication outcomes of feminist theory research to those of another social justice topic: racial and ethnic issues.
The researchers catalogued nearly 1,000 studies published in journals dedicated to either racial justice or feminist theory. Then they determined if each article had received funding, and how prestigious of a journal the article was published in.
Cisłak-Wójcik was not surprised that the results showed feminist theory was 20 percent less likely to get funded. And that, if the research was funded, it was placed in a much less prestigious journal than expected.
For Cisłak-Wójcik, this points to an "underappreciation" of feminism. Journals assessed included Gender and Society and Sex Roles. They publish articles on issues such as gender non-conformity and masculinity.

[Breitbart] Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, who was Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)’s running mate in the 2008 presidential election, has been excluded from his funeral.
Breitbart News has independently confirmed an earlier report in People magazine, which reported that Palin was not sent an invitation, and was told through intermediaries to stay away from the ceremony.
McCain fundraiser Carla Eudy confirmed to People that Palin had not been invited — possibly, People speculated, at the behest of the McCain family.
The news comes on the tenth anniversary of the date in 2008 when Palin was announced as McCain’s pick for Vice President.
Palin now joins President Donald Trump on the list of those barred from the funeral.
But unlike Trump, Palin never feuded with McCain and never criticized him.

...I have managed to hold my tongue about John McCain so far, but it's getting pretty damned hard to continue doing so.
The man displayed sublime courage as a POW and should rightly be held up as an exemplar in that context - but his actions before and since leave a lot to be desired as a commissioned officer and politician. His family (wife's family, actually) has more than enough money to be considered 1%, and by excluding Governor Palin from the funeral his family is showing exactly what they think of the people that he claimed to be a part of.

[VictoryGirls] The Russia Hoax, by Gregg Jarrett, is a tautly written book that is a vigorous defense of the Rule of Law. Does it defend President Trump? Yes, because the facts expose a two-tiered justice system which should disturb anyone regardless of political loyalties.
THE RUSSIA HOAX IS WORTHY OF TOM CLANCY
In 286 pages, Jarrett precisely lays out the facts of what is an unfolding soft coup attempt. With copious notes sourcing the narrative, he lays out a clear chronology. While many of the key facts are public record, Jarrett pulls together the disparate parts into a cohesive whole. The too-close-to-be-coincidence of significant events and the close relationships of the players reads like a political thriller. The book begins where unraveling this whole sordid mess of corruption must begin ‐ with Hillary Clinton.
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A 15-year-old Tunisian girl was gang-raped after she was kidnapped from her home in the town of Goubellat in the Beja governorate, northwest of Tunisia.
Unidentified men stormed the girls’ house and attacked her grandmother, 80 years old, and her mother, 55 years old, and then kidnapped the girl to later sexually assault her.
The grandmother was severely injured during the attack and she passed away on Tuesday evening in a hospital in Tunis. The girl’s mother is still being hospitalized.
The girl was later found dumped in a valley that’s about five kilometers away from her house, the interior ministry said, adding that before slipping into a coma, the victim told them that she was attacked and sexually assaulted by a group of men.
According to the ministry, four suspects have been detained. It is an ongoing investigation as the authorities are waiting for the lab and the forensic examination results.
The horrific crime shocked Tunisians and many social media users have voiced the importance of executing those involved.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the government pledged to arrest all the perpetrators and try them. Meanwhile, ...back at the barn, Bossy had come up with a new idea, one that didn't involve kerosene... Prime Minister Youssef Chahed tasked Minister for Women, the Family and Children Neziha Laabidi with visiting the family’s house and supervising the necessary measures to provide the needed psychological and medical support for the girl and her mother.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The histrionics of former Iranian president Mahmoud Short Round Ahmadinejad never end with the most recent one being his glorious defense of tennis player Serena Williams’ right to wear the full-length skin-tight black cat-suit.
The French Tennis Federation deemed it as dress code violation and said it would no longer be allowed at the next French Open tennis tournament.
Ahmadinejad, who while delivering an address at the UN, famously said that Imam Mahdi appeared to him and he was surrounded by a halo of light, wrote on Twitter: "Why is the French Open disrespecting Serena Williams?"
He then added the more important message: "Unfortunately some people in all countries including my country haven’t realized the true meaning of freedom."
One of the last things one can believe is that a Khomeini project, that has been so deeply immersed in his ideology, since early days, cares about the freedom of women in La Belle France or America.
This is a joke that cannot be taken seriously. It is as if you believe that ISIS’s Baghdadi cares about protecting white dolphins or black seals in the North Pole from being hunted.
The truth remains that the former Iranian president is not preoccupied with the design and color of Serena’s outfit, the African-American tennis player, but with arguing with the authorities.
He has decided to shift to the role of the opposition figure and the people’s hero and ride the wave of popular anger against corruption and decline of the Iranian authority, beginning with the Supreme Leader Khamenei himself.
Prior to that, Ahmadinejad posted a video calling on Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to resign. "Mr. Rouhani, the people do not accept you. You, the fundamentalists and the reformists are all accomplices in what’s happening."

The midget hasn't posted any solutions to any problems has he...? Like maybe outlining some things that would have turned out any differently had HE been in charge?
He is just against how the other guy did it? They are both swimming in the same "stuff". One is swimming around the other one but the "stuff" is all over them both and it...well...it stinks just the same.
Back stroke or broad stroke, kick kick kick. Smells like Islam to me, how about you?
Go on and shut the Straites of Hormuz, midget. Even France will join the coalition as soon as you do. And you will get an insight into Saddam as soon as you do. He wound up hiding in a toilet and dangled from a rope while everybody took pictures and laughed. See how well, you do.

Imam Mahdi told him that Serena Williams should be allowed to wear the full-length skin-tight black cat-suit. I'm thinking Short Round has secret desires cloaked in religious mumbo jumbo--He's got a stalker or at least a lurker profile.

I once went to a barber who had a number of photos of Serena Williams in his shop. In some of them she was wearing tenniswear, in some beachwear (yes he was black).
I wasn't offended at all.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] India’s top court ordered on Wednesday that five prominent rights activists enjugged Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw! for alleged Maoist links be kept under house arrest instead of police custody until it rules next week on a petition challenging their detention.
Police, meanwhile, broke up a protest in southern India against the arrests and detained about two dozen people.
Attorney Prashant Bhushan said the court order will prevent police from taking the five to the western city of Pune, where authorities are investigating their alleged links to Maoist rebels in various parts of the country.
The Supreme Court also ordered the federal and state governments to provide detailed reasons for their arrests by Sept. 5. It set Sept. 6 for the next hearing in the case.
Those arrested on Tuesday were Telugu-language poet Varavara Rao in Hyderabad, Vernon Gonzalves and Arun Farreira in Mumbai, and Gautam Navalakha and Sudha Bhardwaj in New Delhi and a neighboring town.
Police accused the five of delivering speeches that triggered protests and violence between low-caste Dalits and right-wing groups near Pune in December.

[USATODAY] Former mayor Ray Nagin, the businessman-turned-politician who became the worldwide face of the city after Hurricane Katrina, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday.
Nagin, 58, was ordered to report to federal prison Sept. 8 and to pay restitution of $82,000. He was found guilty Feb. 12 of fraud, bribery and related charges involving crimes that took place before and after Katrina devastated the city in August 2005.
Prosecutors immediately objected to the sentence, which falls well below typical guidelines that called for 15-20 years.
"What Ray Nagin did was sell his office over and over and over again," Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Coman said outside the courthouse. "The damage that Ray Nagin inflicted upon this community ... is incalculable. We as a community need not and should not accept public corruption."
Coman said a decision on whether to appeal will be made by U.S. Solicitor General Donald Verrilli.
Judge Ginger Berrigan determined that Nagin did not have a leadership role in the criminal conspiracy, saying all defendants are "equally culpable."
"Mr. Nagin's crimes were motivated in part by a deeply misguided desire to provide for those closest to him," she said.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) ‐ Two civilians were maimed Wednesday in a kaboom in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a security source was quoted as saying.
According to the source, an explosive charge went off near the industrial zone in al-Taji district in northern Baghdad.
"The kaboom left two people maimed, and both of them were transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment," the source said, adding that a probe was opened into the attack.
[IsraelTimes] Intelligence minister provides few details, but implies most detainees are dual nationals; Tehran adds it foiled several terror bombing plots
Tehran said Tuesday that it had locked away Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages! dozens of spies in Iranian government organizations, as tensions rise in the Islamic Theocratic Republic over reimposed US sanctions.
"The intelligence ministry’s anti-espionage unit has successfully identified and arrested tens of spies in different governmental bodies," Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi told the ISNA semi-official news agency, according to Rooters.
He didn’t elaborate on when the arrests took place or the nationality of the detainees.
"I have repeatedly asked people to inform us if they know any dual national," Alavi added, seeming to indicate that many over those arrested have dual nationality.
Iran does not recognize dual nationalities, so detainees cannot receive consular assistance. A UN panel in September described "an emerging pattern involving the arbitrary deprivation of liberty of dual nationals" in Iran, which Tehran denied.
Analysts and family members of dual nationals and others detained in Iran say hardliners in the Islamic Theocratic Republic’s security agencies use the prisoners as bargaining chips in negotiations with the West.
Alavi also said his ministry had foiled a number of terror plots involving plans to detonate bombs in metro stations and universities, Rooters reported, without specifying when that had happened.
He added that in August, security forces had disbanded a terror cell in northern Iran, and had separately arrested a member of the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... terror group in the country’s south, the report said.
The Islamic State terror group carried out twin attacks last June on Iran’s parliament and the tomb of revolutionary founder Ruhollah Khomeini, killing 17.
Iran, a majority Shiite country, is considered a primary enemy by Sunni jihadist groups such as al-Qaeda and Islamic State ‐ and has directly fought these groups in Syria and Iraq.
The United States said in May that it was abandoning the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposing sanctions on Tehran in two phases, in August and November.
Since then the Iranian rial has slipped to record lows, which has consequently led many in the authoritarian country to explicitly call for an end to the rule of Iran’s Islamist leadership.
Protests have sprung up in several major cities including Isfahan, Shiraz, Mashhad and Tehran, driven by concerns over the economy as well as wider anger at the political system.

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) had another productive day in the southern region of Syria this week, as their troops liberated a great deal of territory from the so-called Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Led by their 1st, 3rd, and 10th divisions, the Syrian Arab Army began the day by storming the northeastern and western axes of the strategic al-Safa region in the eastern countryside of the Sweida Governorate.
According to a military source in Sweida city, the Syrian Arab Army liberated several points between the western and northeastern axes of al-Safa region, resulting in the government troops meeting up with one another in this mountainous area.
The source added that the Syrian Arab Army advanced a little over 1.5 kilometers through the al-Safa region, leaving less than 20 percent of the mountain still under the Islamic State’s control.
ISIS reportedly suffered more casualties during this assault, including heavy losses to their military equipment.
The Syrian Arab Army is now attempting to persuade the remaining Islamic State forces of Evil to surrender their positions before they launch another big assault to capture the al-Safa region.

Led by their 1st and 3rd divisions, the Syrian Arab Army managed to liberate the Islamic State’s last water source in the al-Safa region after breaking through the terrorist group’s main defensive line along the northern axis of the mountain.
According to a military source in Sweida city, the Syrian Arab Army killed over 15 Islamic State turbans during the short battle in the al-Safa region on Wednesday morning.
With virtually nowhere to retreat and very little provisions, the Islamic State is likely to surrender their remaining positions in the coming days.
The Syrian Arab Army has already rejected the Islamic State’s terms of surrender because they were not favorable; however, with pressure from the families of the kidnapped civilians of Sweida, the government will likely cut a deal to get the terrorist group to release the prisoners.

Led by their 1st and 3rd divisions, the Syrian Arab Army kicked off the day by storming the Islamic State’s defenses at the Hawi Awad area, which is located in the northern part of the Sweida Governorate’s al-Safa region.
According to a military source in Sweida city, the Syrian Arab Army’s assault would prove successful, as their troops managed to liberate the strategic water dam in the Hawi Awad area.
This is an important advance for the Syrian Arab Army because it ultimately cuts off the Islamic State’s last water source inside the vast Syrian Desert.
With no water and limited provisions, the Islamic State will not likely hold this part of the Sweida Governorate for much longer.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Both Conservative and liberal critics have chided CNN for refusing to issue a correction that US President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... did not have prior knowledge of the Russian Trump Tower meeting.
This comes as Trump’s lawyers speaking publicly on his behalf and his longtime "fixer"-turned-foe Michael Cohen have been fumbling the facts of late.
Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis, spent recent days walking back his bombshell assertions that his client could tell the special counsel that Trump had prior knowledge of a meeting with a Russian lawyer to get damaging information on Perennial Presidential Campaigner Hillary Crooked Hillary Clinton ... former first lady, former secretary of state, former presidential candidate, Conqueror of Benghazi, Heroine of Tuzla, formerly described by her supporters as the smartest woman in the world, usually described by the rest of us as The Thing That Wouldn't Go Away... "I should have been much clearer that I could not confirm the story," Davis said Monday, attempting to clean up his comments in interviews last week after Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations, tax evasion and bank fraud.
Sara A. Carter, a national and international investigative news hound, took to her website to call out CNN for refusing to follow other major US news outlets in issuing a retraction or correction of the reporting.
"Davis changing his story has prompted many of the news outlets to issue a retraction or correction of the reporting, with only one holdout remaining, CNN. As of Tuesday evening, CNN has not issued any corrections, rather it has decided to further stand behind its reporting," Carter wrote.
Liberal writers like Glenn Greenwald also pitched in, writing in The Intercept that "it’s certainly possible that CNN had other sources for this story besides Davis, who now repudiates it".
"It’s hard to see how CNN’s story could be true given that Davis, Cohen’s own lawyer, explicitly says that Cohen has no information that Trump had prior knowledge of the Trump Tower meeting, that Cohen cannot and will not tell Mueller that this happened, and that Davis’ prior claims about Cohen’s knowledge and intentions are false," Greenwald said.

Maybe we can return to the written Constitution where all men have equal standing before the courts, doing away with the fiat of the judiciary that there are private and public persons when libel is done, so to have one standard for us all. Then watch the consequences of unconstrained character assassination.

Trump doesn't feel the need to retract his own false postings. He had a sticky Tweet up about Google not advertising his SOTU addresses on Youtube. A simple search of the Wayback Machine proves that this is not true. Does Trump post a correction? Of course not. The tweet is still up and viewed by millions.

EC, this is Rantburg, not the Daily Screamer. Most of us have for decades taken it for granted that Trump is a liar, but we're hoping that 1) he knows he's a liar, 2) he's a smart liar, and 3) his lying is motivated at least partly by the tactical utility of his lying, and of being perceived as a simpleminded, egomaniacal, shamelessly lying loose cannon.
If these things are true... we're in the presence of history-warping genius. If not... well, it's not as if we had much choice, and as left-menacing bogeys go, Trump's more "meanest Teletubby" than Hilter, no?

"The presidential election is a vote of conscience," he asserted, saying politicians are bound to vote for him based on what their conscience tells them.

[DAWN] The Ottoman Turkish lira weakened on Tuesday as investors weighed up The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... ’s efforts to manage its rift with the United States after Finance Minister Berat Albayrak warned US trade sanctions against Ankara could destabilise the Middle East.
The row with Washington over an American evangelical Christian pastor detained in Turkey on terrorism charges has accelerated losses in the lira, which is down about 38 per cent against the dollar this year.
More broadly, investors are worried about the direction of monetary policy under President Tayyip Erdogan. The president, a self-described "enemy of interest rates" has repeatedly put public pressure on the central bank and picked Albayrak, his son-in-law, as finance minister.

[DAWN] A former Israeli soldier who fatally shot a maimed Paleostinian attacker who was lying on the ground says he "has no regrets" in his first interview since leaving prison three months ago.
Elor Azaria told the Hebrew-language daily Israel Hayom on Wednesday that if he could relive the March 2016 incident in the West Bank city of Hebron, "I would act exactly the same, because that's how I needed to act."
Azaria served two-thirds of a 14-month reduced sentence after being convicted of manslaughter.
The combat medic was filmed shooting a maimed, incapacitated Paleostinian attacker. Israel's military pushed for his prosecution, saying Azaria violated its ethics. Azaria says in the interview that the military "abandoned" him, echoing sentiments of many Israelis, particularly on the nationalist right, who defended his actions.

Dutch police on Tuesday tossed in the calaboose ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... a man suspected of planning an attack against far-right politician Geert Wilders after he said he intended to hold a Prophet Muhammad cartoon competition.
Police said in a statement they arrested the still unidentified suspect at the main railway station in The Hague.
He was being questioned and was expected to appear before a judge on Friday, the statement said.
Police said they had been alerted by a video on Facebook in which the 26-year-old man talked about attacking anti-Islam MP Wilders, as well as the Dutch parliament.
Wilders, who announced plans for a competition of Muhammad cartoons earlier this year, said he had been told about the plot by the Netherlands’ counter-terrorism police, NCTb.
"I was told by NCTb this morning that a man on Facebook had said that he had arrived in the Netherlands for the purpose of killing me," Wilders said via his Twitter account.
"Fortunately, he has been arrested. It is madness that this is happening because of a drawing contest and that it is raining death threats."
In June, Wilders tweeted that he had received clearance to hold the competition in his party’s parliamentary offices.
The contest is to be judged by American cartoonist and self-defined "recovered Moslem" Bosch Fawstin,
...Eisner Award-winning cartoonist and ex-Muslim of Albanian stock..
who won a similar contest in the US in 2015. Two gunnies opened fire on a security officer outside that competition, and were subsequently killed.
The head of the Netherlands’ Party for Freedom or PVV, Wilders is known for his virulent anti-Islam statements.
Last week, Pakistain expressed objections to what it described as the "blasphemous" cartoon competition and summoned a high-ranking Dutch diplomat in Islamabad to protest.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte also described the competition as "disrespectful" and "provocative," even though he defended the principle of freedom of expression.
Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok also insisted that the competition was not a government initiative.

[AlAhram] The Netherlands has "expressed its regret" to Egypt over a Dutch politician’s intention to organize a cartoon contest depicting anti-Islam cartoons, Egypt’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
In an official statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry said Minister Sameh Shoukry received a phone call from his Dutch counterpart Stef Blok, who expressed his country’s sorrow over controversial Dutch nationalist politician Geert Wilders’s plan to hold the anti-Islam cartoon contest inside parliament.
Wilders' Dutch Party for Freedom, known for their hatred and opposition to Islam, is the second-largest party in the Dutch parliament.
Blok said Wilder’s plan does not in any way represent the positions of the government or Dutch community, stressing his government’s refusal to all manifestations of hatred, incitement, and disrespect of religions.
Shoukry affirmed the necessity that freedom of expression should not be confused with the adoption of hate and incitement speech.
He described it as a mix up which would have a dangerous impact on the relations between nations and people with different religions.
Shoukry also said that the world needs to support and spread values of tolerance and respect of other’s opinions, as well as a respect of beliefs and religions to repel religious extremism, terrorism, and violence.
Since Tuesday, the Netherlands has distanced itself from the competition to several Islamic majority states opposing the contest, yet defending the right to hold it on foundations of freedom of expression.
Pakistan has been leading the line of opposition to Wilder’s contest, calling for an emergency session by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) over the contest.
The outrage comes after protests and riots made 13 years ago in several Arab and Muslim countries after a Danish newspaper published several offensive cartoons of Islam Prophet Mohamed in 2005.
In 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten provoked protests across the world and riots in some Muslim countries by publishing several cartoons of Muhammad, including one depicting the prophet with a bomb in his turban.
In 2015, two French militants killed 12 people at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo’s offices as revenge for the printing of cartoons of the Islamic Prophet Mohamed in the past.
[ALMASDARNEWS] As the battle for the jihadi-controlled Idlib draws near, jihadists continue to arrest more civilians for promoting reconciliations with the Syrian government.
Up to 30 people were nabbed Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'! in the towns of Barisah, Tall Sheih, Halbeh, tall sheikh and Maasran for allegedly communicating with the Syrian authorities.
The security campaign is launched across the province and led by the National Liberation Front; a newly-formed alliance of jihadi groups established to counter the Syrian Army attack.
[ALMASDARNEWS] The planned chemical weapon provocation in the Syrian province of Idlib is aimed at maintaining the presence of bandidosgunnies in the area, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
The Russian FM, who met his Saudi counterpart, Adel al-Jubeir in Moscow on Wednesday, compared the terrorist presence in the province with an "abscess" that should be swiftly removed.
"Idlib is now the last remaining hotbed of the terrorists, who try to speculate on the area’s status of de-escalation zone; try using the population as a human shield and try repressing the gangs that are ready for talks with the government," he said.
The Minister also noted that the overall goal in Washington with regard to war-ravaged Syria, was not really helping the country, but to push for regime change.
"It’s not the first time the US ‐ no matter the administration ‐ has prioritized the task of changing dissident regimes above the common goals of eradicating terrorism and extremism. It happened in Iraq and Libya. Now they’re trying to do the same in Syria. To phrase it more correctly ‐ they tried to do it in Syria, but failed," Lavrov said.
The chemical attack issue and "the threats that are put forward against the Syrian government, are used with the sole purpose of preventing the expulsion of the bandidosgunnies from the de-escalation zone in Idlib," Lavrov said.
In this case, the Trump administration is simply following the policies of Barack Obama I am the change that you seek... , under whom "the Americans tried to use all means possible to shelter Jabhat al-Nusra ...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ... , with hope of using it in the fight against, what they call, the regime," he added.

[RT] Firefighters in the central German city of Wiesbaden removed a controversial golden statue of Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First ... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey... overnight. Local authorities said "security could no longer be guaranteed."
Public broadcaster ZDF reported that police had to "protect" the statue from angry residents, as well as separating some Kurdish and Ottoman Turkish Germans following a "fierce confrontation."
Footage obtained by Ruptly shows at least two dozen coppers in protective gear walking from the statue towards a group of demonstrators in order to push them away from the square on Tuesday night. Firefighters then arrived to remove the statue using a crane and flatbed truck shortly after midnight.
Tensions between the president’s supporters and opponents had resulted in a "slightly aggressive atmosphere" throughout Tuesday, a police spokesperson told DPA news agency.
The four-foot edifice of Erdogan was erected in the city’s German Unity Square (Platz der Deutschen Einheit) on Monday as part of the Wiesbaden Biennale art festival. It was intended to stay in place until the end of the festival on September 2.
Crafted in a pose that resembles the famous statue of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein that was pulled down by US troops during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, organizers had hoped it would provoke public debate about this year’s festival theme of ’bad news’.
But the debate erupted right on the surface of the statue. It was vandalized with profanity and male genitalia on the night of its erection, with graffiti saying "f*** Erdogan" and "Ottoman Turkish Hitler."
Erdogan represents a polarizing figure in Germany, which is home to at least 3 million people with Ottoman Turkish roots. His crackdown on political opponents, civil servants, and journalists in the wake of 2016’s coup against his regime has garnered much criticism from European nations, including Germany.
After reaching a diplomatic low point with EU members in 2017, when Ankara accused both the Netherlands and Germany of "Nazi practices," diplomatic relations have been moving towards normalization.
Erdogan is set to visit Berlin next month, where the agenda sets out a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, military honors, and an official state banquet.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] At least eight people were killed and 12 maimed in a suicide car-kaboom on a security checkpoint in western Iraq, the local mayor said on Wednesday.
The attacker drove a car rigged with explosives into the checkpoint in Qaim district, which was jointly manned by the army and Shi’ite militias, Mayor Ahmed al-Mehlawy told Rooters.
Five snuffies and three non-combatants were killed, Mehlawy said. Some of the maimed were in a critical condition, he said. The Iraqi military put the initial corpse count at seven.
"Security forces in the Qaim district noticed a suspect Kia vehicle and shot at it after it turned out to be rigged and driven by a suicidal terrorist, which led to its kaboom and the death of seven people, including four from the security forces and three civilians," the military said in a statement.
ISIS grabbed credit for the attack and said it killed 28 people, contradicting the official corpse counts.
Iraq declared victory over ISIS in December, dislodging the group from all the territory it held after its self-proclaimed caliphate, which also encompassed part of Syria, collapsed earlier in 2017.
Security forces retook Qaim, which lies 300 km (185 miles) west of Baghdad in the Sunni province of Anbar, on the border with Syria, in November. It was one of the last remaining territories in the country held by ISIS.
The group’s fighters have since then waged a campaign of kidnappings and killings.
Anbar (IraqiNews.com) – The corpse count from today’s suicide car kaboom on a security checkpoint at al-Qaem district in Anbar rose to 10, including six army troops and four members of the Popular Mobilization Forces, a security source was quoted as saying.
The attack, in which a bobby-trapped vehicle was used, left 14 security personnel maimed, Iraqi website BasNews quoted the source as saying on Wednesday.

But, but, "Don't monkey around with electing a socialist" is a racial dogwhistle! To racially-obsessed dogs
[TampaBay] The Tallahassee Democrat report came just days after the FBI issued a new subpoena in the drawn-out case investigating corruption in Tallahassee's city government.
Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum went on a luxury Costa Rica vacation in May 2016 with a group of lobbyists, friends and investors, the Tallahassee Democrat reported Friday.
But that's not all: during the trip, Gillum received a calendar invite via email from Adam Corey, an investor in Tallahassee's Edison restaurant, to set up a meeting at The Edison with supposed "developer" Mike Miller, according to the Democrat's reporting. Miller was actually an undercover FBI agent.
The story also reports that Corey, who has been friends with Gillum since college, was on the trip along with another Edison investor Sean Pittman and other lobbyists and business associates.
The trip and the subsequent meeting came at the height of a still-ongoing FBI probe into corruption in the Tallahassee city government that produced a new subpoena on Thursday.
Corey was a prime target of that new subpoena, with the FBI seeking documents about him and the Edison, which was granted $2.1 million in taxpayer money by the city's Community Redevelopment Agency to help with the restaurant's Cascades Park renovation and construction.
Corey also served briefly as Gillum's campaign treasurer during his 2014 run for mayor. The mayor has since cut ties with the developer.
Gillum, who is running for governor as a Democrat, has repeatedly said that law enforcement has assured him that he is not the focus of the probe. But the calendar invite represents the first reported connection between Gillum and the undercover agents, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
"This is not new news," said Geoff Burgan, Gillum's campaign spokesman, directing requests for comment to Gillum's chief-of-staff's remarks in the Democrat. "The meeting that they're referring to was reported on extensively before."
Though he acknowledged the story was not helpful, "this investigation is clearly closing in on someone else in the city, and the campaign is focused on the issues. That's what voters care about."
In the story, ethics experts and watchdogs cringed at the trip, which they said had the appearance of impropriety even without the FBI link. Gillum and his friends insisted to the Democrat that no official business was discussed and he paid for all of his and his wife's expenses.
The group reportedly split a $1,400-a-night luxury villa on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, according statements made to the Democrat.
It is against the law for officials to accept gifts from people trying to influence their vote or other official action, or accept any gift over $100 from lobbyists or groups that conduct official business with the person's office.
No matter what, the repeated news about the feds' investigation of Tallahassee is likely not good for Gillum, who is trailing behind the other Democratic candidates in terms of fundraising.
Burgan dismissed the idea that the story could hamper future fundraising, saying: "The biggest chilling effect on fundraising is that Andrew's the only one who's not a millionaire."

[DAWN] Tehrik-e-Labbaik Pakistain (TLP) on Wednesday started its march from Lahore to Islamabad ‐ a form of protest against Dutch Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders' announcement to hold a competition of blasphemous caricatures ‐ as its demand for the expulsion of the Netherlands' ambassador to Pakistain from the country remained unfulfilled.
After the party's supporters gathered at Data Darbar, the TLP rally kicked off its journey reciting na`at and chanting religious slogans. The group has crossed Kala Shah Kaku on the G T Road and is closing in on Gujranwala.
Upon its arrival in Kamoke ‐ some 25km from Gujranwala ‐ the Khadim Hussain Rizvi-led rally was given a welcome by its supporters.
Following the rally's departure for Islamabad, Prime Minister Imran Khan ... aka Taliban Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five... formed a four-member committee to resolve the matter.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] US President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... believes he has a good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un ...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished... and there is "no reason at this time to be spending large amounts of money on joint US-South Korea war games," the White House said on Wednesday.
The White House, in a statement sent on Twitter by Trump, said the US president believes North Korea is under "tremendous pressure" from China but that Beijing also was supplying Pyongyang with "considerable aid," including fuel, fertilizer and commodities.
"This is not helpful!" the statement said.
"China makes it much more difficult in terms of our relationship with North Korea," Trump said at the White House, though he insisted his ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping were "great."
He also noted his "fantastic relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, whom he met in Singapore in June.
"Part of the North Korea problem is caused by the trade disputes with China," Trump said.
Beijing is Pyongyang's sole major ally, and the main transit country for any goods entering the North.
Trump has suggested that China -- angered by US moves on trade -- is no longer being as tough as it could be on North Korea.
The Republican leader reiterated his wish to fundamentally alter the trade status quo between the United States and China, the world's top two economies.
He said he needed to take a tough stance with Beijing on trade "because it was really not fair to our country," Trump said, throwing shade on his predecessors who "closed their eyes" to the issue.
In June, Trump and Kim pledged to work toward the "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula."
But those efforts stalled several weeks ago, and last week, Trump ordered Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to cancel a planned trip to Pyongyang.
Pompeo said Tuesday that Washington remains ready to engage "when it is clear that Chairman Kim stands ready to deliver on the commitments that he made at the Singapore summit to President Trump to completely denuclearize North Korea.

[DAWN] Four coppers were rubbed out while security forces killed two suspected rebels in India-held Kashmire (IHK) on Wednesday as tensions rose before a major Supreme Court hearing on the troubled region.
Five coppers who had stopped near the southern Kashmire town of Shopian to repair their vehicle were ambushed, Inspector General of Police Swayam Prakash Pani told AFP.
"Four of the police were killed. One who was inside the vehicle at the time of the attack is safe," Pani said.
Separately, two suspected rebels were killed in a shootout with government forces not far from the attack on the police, officials said.
The Moslem-majority Himalayan region has seen a resurgence of hostilities in the past two years.
Security officials say at least 144 rebels have been killed this year, while more fighters have joined their ranks. There are an estimated 250 active underground fighters, they say.
Separatist groups have called a general strike for Thursday and Friday before the Supreme Court hearing, which they fear could allow Indians from outside Kashmire to buy property in the state and get government jobs.

[DAWN] A special court on Wednesday resumed hearing the high treason case against retired Gen Pervez Perv Musharraf ... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ... and sought assistance in proceeding with the case if the former military dictator continues to abscond.
Secretary Interior Yousaf Naseem Khokhar, present for the hearing, told the two-member bench led by Justice Yawer Ali that a letter had been written to Interpol for Musharraf's repatriation, but Interpol officials had refused to issue a red warrant, saying that Interpol does not deal in political cases.
"How can the court decide the case if Musharraf avoids turning up on the next hearing?" Justice Ali asked.
He asked authorities to inform the court on the next hearing if they can record Musharraf's statement via video conference or if the case can be pursued without recording a statement.

Iran doesn't HAVE any friends who will actually DO anything to help.
The US will go after Khuzestan Province ( examine that strategically if you are perceptive ). And we can stand off and reduce Iran to bouncing marbles. The Iranian people will do the rest. They are already biting each other now. Iran will become a cage full of dog crap ad white eyeballs. And we may never give Khuzestan Province back..we may give it to the Saudis. Let them "adminster" the place.
And Iran can adapt to the reality and eat all the rosewater flavored ice cream ( Allah loves it ) they can spoon in a bowl.
A picture of something decidedly military that may be the BMP-3 can be seen at the link.
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The First shipment of the Russian BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle has arrived to Iraq, news reports said on Wednesday.
The Iraqi army previously mentioned that the personnel were trained on operating the BMP-3 in Russia.
The Russian vehicle will be used along with the T-90 tanks.
There has been an agreement between Russia and Iraq over sending Russian Т-90С / СК tanks to the Iraqi army in 2017.
Uralvagonzavod, the manufacturer of T-90 tanks said Iraq will 73 tanks, in accordance with the contract.
Previously, news reports said Iraqi army received fighter jets and other items from Russia.
Russia had previously pledged to maintain military assistance to Iraq in its war against Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. In 2016, It opened a military command center in Baghdad and provided Iraq with tons of anti-chemical weapons kits in 2015.
However, a hangover is the wrath of grapes... Moscow has not partaken in the U.S.-led military alliance backing the Iraqi forces in their campaign against IS which has run since 2014.

But just think, it's more modern than a T-72 so it MUST be awesome! We all know how horribly scary russian military equipment is! Never mind that the T-72 was unable to penetrate the front armor of M1-A2's with dedicated anti-tank rounds from 500m, yet the A2's can punch right through the front of a T-72 from over 4000m.
Honestly they aren't a bad choice for places like Iraq as was said. If it shares brake fluid commonality with the T-72, hopefully they remind the crews not to drink it. Just because it acts like booze doesn't mean it won't kill ya.
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Ghazni police commandment has promised strict actions against the perpetrators involved in looting the properties of the people during the Taliban ...Arabic for students... attack on the placid provincial capital of the province.
According to a statement released by the Police Commandment of Ghazni, a number of the local residents of Ghazni city also looted the properties of the people besides the Talibs who looted the government and commercial properties.
The statement further added that the security forces have received some documents regarding the involvement of certain people in looting the public properties, vowing that the perpetrators would be tossed in the clink Please don't kill me! soon.
The Police Commandment of Ghazni also added that the national defense and security forces are always prepared to protect the lives, properties, and the dignity of the people.
However, there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened... the Police Commandment added in its statement that certain people committed crimes to loot the properties of the people while joining hands with the enemies of the country.
This comes as the Talibs launched a large scale attack on Ghazni city, the placid provincial capital of Ghazni province two weeks ago, sparking heavy festivities that lasted for several days.
Although exact figures are not available regarding the casualties inflicted on hard boys, security personnel, and the civilians, but reports indicate that the ordinary people suffered heavy casualties during the attack besides the public properties were severely damaged.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Israel on Wednesday renewed its threat to attack Iranian military targets in Syria, after the two Moslem allies signed an accord on security cooperation.
"The accord concluded by (Syrian President) Bashir al-Assad and Iran constitutes a test for Israel: Our response will be loud and clear," Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said on Israeli public radio.
"We will not allow Iran to establish itself militarily in Syria," he said.
"We will react in Syria with all our might against any Iranian target that threatens Israel, and if the Syrian army’s air defense intervenes against us, it will pay the price."
Iran’s military attaché to Damascus said Tuesday that his country’s military advisers would remain in Syria under the defense agreement signed the previous day.
"Support for Syria’s territorial integrity and the independence of Syrian illusory sovereignty were also emphasised in the agreement," Brigadier-General Abolghasem Alinejad said.
Tehran has provided steady political, financial and military backing to Assad as he has fought back against a seven-year uprising.
Israel has sought to avoid direct involvement in the conflict but acknowledges carrying out dozens of air strikes in Syria to stop what it says are deliveries of advanced weaponry to its Lebanese enemy Hezbollah.
It has also pledged to prevent its arch foe Iran from entrenching itself militarily in Syria and a series of strikes that have killed Iranians in Syria have been attributed to Israel.

[DAWN] The UN human rights ...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless... chief urged Facebook on Wednesday to more proactively address hate speech but warned against excessive regulation, after US President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... accused tech giants' platforms of bias against him.
Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein's appeal follows a decision by Facebook this week to ban Myanmar's army chief and other top military brass named in a UN probe linking them to a possible "genocide" against Rohingya Moslems.
The social media network is the prime source of news and information for many in the country, but has also been a platform for the army and Buddhist hardliners to spread hate speech against the Rohingya and other minorities.
The site aired support for the military's bloody "clearance operations" last year that forced some 700,000 Rohingya over the border into Bangladesh.
"We felt early on very uncomfortable with what we were seeing in Myanmar, (but) in the early meetings that we had with Facebook, I didn't think they were taking it seriously," said Zeid, who is due to step down from his post as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights at the end of the week.
