Armada of naval power massing in the Gulf as Israel prepares an Iran strike
Battleships, aircraft carriers, minesweepers and submarines from 25 nations are converging on the strategically important Strait of Hormuz in an unprecedented show of force as Israel and Iran move towards the brink of war.

Western leaders are convinced that Iran will retaliate to any attack by attempting to mine or blockade the shipping lane through which passes around 18 million barrels of oil every day, approximately 35 per cent of the worldÂ’s petroleum traded by sea.

A blockade would have a catastrophic effect on the fragile economies of Britain, Europe the United States and Japan, all of which rely heavily on oil and gas supplies from the Gulf.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the worldÂ’s most congested international waterways. It is only 21 miles wide at its narrowest point and is bordered by the Iranian coast to the north and the United Arab Emirates to the south.

In preparation for any pre-emptive or retaliatory action by Iran, warships from more than 25 countries, including the United States, Britain, France, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, will today begin an annual 12-day exercise.

The war games are the largest ever undertaken in the region.

They will practise tactics in how to breach an Iranian blockade of the strait and the force will also undertake counter-mining drills.

The multi-national naval force in the Gulf includes three US Nimitz class carrier groups, each of which has more aircraft than the entire complement of the Iranian air force.

The carriers are supported by at least 12 battleships, including ballistic missile cruisers, frigates, destroyers and assault ships carrying thousand of US Marines and special forces.

The British component consists of four British minesweepers and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Cardigan Bay, a logistics vessel. HMS Diamond, a brand-new £1billion Type 45 destroyer, one of the most powerful ships in the British fleet, will also be operating in the region.

In addition, commanders will also simulate destroying Iranian combat jets, ships and coastal missile batteries.

#2  September surprise? Telegraph story; haven't seen much in the U.S. media but that would be no surprise. They are too busy beating up on Romney. Article says Obama has meeting with Netanyahu today. The article was posted on 9-15. There is a lot of firepower being concentrated in the Gulf.

#5  Iran's main retaliatory response will likely be ala proxy Regional + International Terror, most certainly agz the US + Israel + now UK, + all other Govts-States determined by Iran to had supported the attack agz them.

Again, IFF THE US DIDN'T WANT TO INVADE IRAN BEFORE, IT WILL HAVE TO INVADE NOW AFTER ANY ATTACK(S) BY IT ANDOR THE ISRAELIS AGZ IRAN, e.g. 2003 Iraq.

I have no doubts there will be major TerrOps launched agz Washington + London [Royals].

#6  Well the first word of this article being Bullcrap aside, it would make sense given the protests and attacks. I have no doubt Iran could have given support to Al-queda for the various embassy attacks and the Taliban attack in Hemland.

Giving Champ something to think about for his re-election maybe? I'm not convinced Obama wouldn't shoot down an "unidentified" Aircraft heading to Iran.

Panetta: 'Little red lines' on Iran a political ploy
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is attempting to pin US President Barack Obama into a corner by demanding the US president delineate "little red lines" which if passed would prompt US military action against Iran's nuclear facilities, US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta claimed Friday night.

In an interview with Foreign Policy's National Security Channel, Panetta dismissed Netanyahu's engagement of Obama on the issue of preemption, saying, "The fact is [that] presidents of the United States, prime ministers of Israel or any other country - leaders of these countries don't have, you know, a bunch of little red lines that determine their decisions."

"What they have," Panetta asserted "are facts that are presented to them about what a country is up to, and then they weigh what kind of action is needed to be taken in order to deal with that situation. I mean, that's the real world. Red lines are kind of political arguments that are used to try to put people in a corner."

Despite the apparent friction between the US and Israel over Iran, Panetta dismissed the notion of a rupture in relations between the two countries.

More details on Stevens' last moments
Benghazi, Libya -- Three days before the deadly assault on the United States consulate in Libya, a local security official says he met with American diplomats in the city and warned them about deteriorating security.

Jamal Mabrouk, a member of the February 17th Brigade, told CNN that he and a battalion commander had a meeting about the economy and security. He said they told the diplomats that the security situation wasn't good for international business.

"The situation is frightening, it scares us," Mabrouk said they told the U.S. officials. He did not say how they responded.

Mabrouk said it was not the first time he has warned foreigners about the worsening security situation in the face of the growing presence of armed jihadist groups in the Benghazi area.

The main building in the compound is in charred ruins. The suite where the body of the ambassador was found was protected by a large door with steel bars; the windows had steel bars. His body was recovered after looters broke into the room. It appears his security detail left him in the room while they tried to deal with the attack.

There are numerous questions about what happened at the consulate where protesters had gathered to demonstrate against the film "Innocence of Muslims," which reportedly was made in California by a filmmaker whose identity is unclear.

Chief among the questions is what happened to U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, who went missing during the attack.

The State Department has not released details about how Stevens died, though numerous media reports have said the ambassador was taken from the consulate to the Benghazi medical center by locals. He arrived at the hospital, according to the reports, unresponsive and covered in soot from the fire. A doctor was unable to revive him and declared him dead, the reports said.

According to one of the Libyan security guards who was stationed at one of the gates armed with only a radio, the assault began simultaneously from three directions. Heavy machine guns and rocket -propelled grenades were used, according to the guard. He said masked men threatened to kill him at gunpoint for 'protecting the infidels. He declined to appear on camera for fear of repercussions.
That might be a cover story for the guard; he might have been in on the operation. Just speculating...
The February 17th Brigade -- a militia connected to the government but not part of Libya's armed forces -- was closely involved in the rescue of the American staff trapped after the attack Tuesday night.

After the consulate was attacked and set on fire, a number of Americans escaped to a safe-house in another part of the city. But that came under attack too.
So the safe house wasn't. Bad guys had pretty darned good intel. Makes me wonder how long our procedures had been compromised, and who the bad guys had on the inside...
Mabrouk said he received a call from an official in Tripoli, who said he had been called by a "terrified" American in Benghazi. The official was at the safe-house. Mabrouk says the Brigade asked the Americans if they needed help -- but were told that while the situation was dangerous, it was under control.

A few hours later, Mabrouk said he received another call from Tripoli about the arrival of a U.S. team at Benghazi airport that needed transport into the city. He met the seven Americans, who were heavily armed but not in military uniform, on the runway and provided them with an armed escort, he said.

As soon as the two vehicles carrying the seven Americans arrived at the safe house, they came under intense attack -- including a volley of grenades and machine-gun fire. The assailants then fled.

The Libyan government has vowed to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice. But on a visit to the heavily-damaged consulate, the country's president said Libya expected help form its friends in the international community. Asked whether the government was not capable of controlling extremist groups, he responded "You are not far from the truth."
I say we take him up on the request: we'll help. Sure we will. In our own special way. We have spec ops guys, paramilitary CIA, etc. Time to give them a hunting license in Libya with no bag limit.

NYT Cuts Pensions for Retirees - Women, Minorities Hit Hardest
The Times Co. said Friday
a busy news day when not a lot of people were likely to notice
it will offer those former employees who are eligible the option to receive all of their pension in one lump-sum payment, equal to the present value of their benefits
calculated using a discount rate of 100%.
They can alternatively start to receive a reduced annuity.
Hemlock is also available, as is the option of receiving benefits in the form of Cracker-Jack prizes.
'Reduced annuity' is also known as a pension payment cut...
A company spokesman confirmed Janet Robinson
who they just replaced with a white male making $8 million
was eligible for the offer.
Betcha she doesn't suffer any...
The offer is aimed at reducing the size of the company's pension obligations
which started the year at a staggering $400,000,000
and "the volatility in the company's overall financial condition," the Times Co. said in a regulatory filing.
Or as Champ would say, the Sulzbergers want to balance their budget on the backs of the poorest and most vulnerable members of the NYT community.
He's not going to sell the house in the Hamptons, greenhorn...
While recent assets sales have helped strengthen the media company's balance sheet, it still is grappling with significant pension obligations.
NYT management noted that the company was operating at a significant pricing disadvantage to its main competition: White House press releases.
Everyone else has to meet their pension obligations, and raise taxes and contributions as necessary to do that, according to Times editorials...

-Election 2012
Romney's Worst Week
Putting aside the back and forth about why Romney said what he did when he did, his best strategy in this election is to talk about the still-struggling economy every day between now and Nov. 6. To purposefully divert from that strategy to engage in a battle on foreign policy — a topic few outside Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor care about — is baffling at best and wrongheaded at worst.
Right. Who cares about a few foreign service guys getting waxed in some third-world poophole? Who cares about hostages held for 444 days? Nobody cares about that country anymore; it just faded away when we ignored it.

#3  ObamaÂ’s Horrible, Gaffe-Laden Week Goes Unreported

The United States and President Barack Obama have suffered a pretty bad week, but for varying reasons. The U.S. was dealt a heavy blow Tuesday when the American Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, was brutally murdered in a coordinated attack on a consulate in Benghazi. But the focus of most of the press has, to their disgrace, been on the appropriateness of the timing of Republican presidential nominee Mitt RomneyÂ’s attacks on the president over this incident. In the space of the last 24 hours, however, the president has committed two offenses against both etiquette and policy that should be reported on extensively.

On Wednesday, in an interview with the Spanish-language network Telemundo, the president was asked about the attacks on two U.S. embassies in North Africa, specifically a breach of America’s embassy in Cairo by crowds of protesters. The Telemundo reporter asked if Obama considered Egypt an ally. Obama replied that the United States did not consider Egypt an ally, “but we don’t consider them an enemy.”

This remark displays a flippant nonchalance about American security policy and a downright antipathy for history and the work of generations of ObamaÂ’s predecessors.

Article goes on to expose how BO (not his dog Bo) "has bucked more than 30 years of American foreign policy in a critical region."
Posted by: Au Auric || 09/15/2012 10:49 Comments || Top||

#4  I read some report that the Obama guys think this is a great opportunity for them. I think they suspect they'll get a rally around the flag momentum out of this the Bush did after Sept 11 but this is different. This was caused by folly and made worse by weakness.

I'm not sure if the left is deluding themselves or lying in order to construct a narrative they hope others will buy. My own take is not the campaign is Romney's to lose.

#5  Meanwhile Bernake has instituted been printing money, and buying up mortgages to securitize investments setting things up for another bubble like the last one--I fear a double dip recession when it breaks. The U.S. has been downgraded again under Champ because of a lack of coherent economic policies.

#6  The world is burning. It's our worst intelligence & diplomatic failure since the 70's. Obama is playing the fiddle. And it's Romney's fault.

Tar. Feathers.

Or better yet, post all those involved with this story to our brand new Libyan embassy! Pack their pockets with dollar bills and secrets. Tell the locals they are gay Christians who eat pork.
Posted by: Iblis || 09/15/2012 11:34 Comments || Top||

#7  It's understood that the MSM will try to make Romney look like a right wing whacko if he tries to tell the truth about these things. But they're gonna do that anyway so he just needs to start telling the truth anyway. The death of our ambassador in Libya can be laid directly at the feet of Hillary Clinton. He should tell it like it is and call for her resignation. He should tell anybody who will listen that he will NOT apologize for the US Constitution. If there is still anybody in this country who cares about the US Constitution that message might just work.

Egypt's MB "Truthers" Need to Change
Bless you Bobby for taking this chore on.
Morsi has not been shy about airing his odious views. In a May 2010 interview with Brookings Institution scholar Shadi Hamid, Morsi dismissed al-Qaeda's responsibility for the attacks. "When you come and tell me that the plane hit the tower like a knife in butter, then you are insulting us," Hamid reported Morsi as saying.
It's a short list that does NOT insult the Broderbund.
"How did the plane cut through the steel like this? Something must have happened from the inside. It's impossible."
Ask Rosie O'Donnell.
Similarly, in 2007, Morsi reportedly declared that the United States "has never presented any evidences [sic] on the identity of those who committed that incident." In 2008, he called for a "huge scientific conference" to analyze "what caused the attack against a massive structure like the two towers."
We have already had 200 engineers and professors look at the structural failures. But there might have been some Juices on that panel.
Mustafa Ghoneimy, leader of the Brotherhood's Guidance Office, said "the Jews" had executed the attacks. "So many Jews worked in these two towers," he said. "And on that day, they were off." Meanwhile, Brotherhood secretary general Mahmoud Hussein pinned the attacks on "one of the intelligence services in America, or the Jews." Spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan speculated that "intelligence services" were behind the attacks, since "it is impossible for immature pilots to execute their ideas. It needs some professionalism to do it."
He couldn't have done it, so it's impossible.
The United States should be willing to extend economic and military aid to Egypt commensurate with the latter's needs and its commitment to partner in advance of common objectives. But in working out the details of this new arrangement, our president should not give his personal imprimatur to leaders who espouse repulsive, abhorrent views that undermine a vital U.S. national security interest.
Mubarak did not believe the six million dead Jews, but maybe he kept his opinions to himself?
To that end, Obama should explicitly condition any meeting with Morsi on the latter's clear and public renunciation of 9/11 revisionism. This position would present Morsi with a stark choice: He can either repudiate the hate-filled conspiracies that he has helped to sow and reap the benefits of Obama's embrace, or he can expose himself as an irresponsible ideologue with whom few members of the international community will want to deal. Failure to lay down a marker with Morsi before he comes to New York means Morsi may never have to make that choice.
I am not holding out hope, let alone my breath.

Feds Interview Calif. Filmmaker
LOS ANGELES -- A Southern California filmmaker linked to an anti-Islamic movie inflaming protests across the Middle East was interviewed by federal probation officers at a Los Angeles sheriff's station but was not arrested or detained, authorities said early Saturday.
Not arrested? Golly, what would the charge be if they did? But the newshound writing this sounds disappointed...
Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was interviewed at the station in his hometown of Cerritos, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Don Walker said.

Federal officials have said they were investigating the activities of Nakoula, who has been convicted of financial crimes. If the probation department determines Nakoula violated terms of his release, a judge could send him back to prison.
Making a film violates his parole?
Walker said Nakoula traveled voluntarily in a squad car with deputies.
"You can come with us in the squaddie or my boys can toss your place. Your call."
"He went to the Cerritos station to talk with probation officers. He's not under any arrest," Walker said. The deputy said he doesn't have information on the interview or how long it lasted. KNBC-TV reported that Nakoula went to the station early Saturday morning.

The TV station said that media had been staking out the home at the end of a cul de sac in the Southern California city when the man emerged wearing a coat, hat, scarf and glasses.
In 48 hours the newshounds will know every facet of this man's life, including all his transcripts and diplomas...
The probation department is reviewing the case of Nakoula, who was previously convicted on bank fraud charges and was banned from using computers or the Internet as part of his sentence. The review is aimed at learning whether Nakoula violated the terms of his five-year probation.
How can you ban someone from using a computer in 2012? Everyone, just about everyone, has one.
Hey, maybe he didn't use a computer... maybe he used a SMARTPHONE! That's not a computer, is it? Or isn't it? Case law, anyone????
Karen Redmond, a spokeswoman for the administrative office of the U.S. courts, confirmed Friday the review is under way.

Federal authorities have identified Nakoula, a self-described Coptic Christian, as the key figure behind "Innocence of Muslims," a film denigrating Islam and the Prophet Muhammad that ignited mob violence against U.S. embassies across the Middle East. A federal law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Thursday that authorities had connected Nakoula to a man using the pseudonym of Sam Bacile who claimed earlier to be writer and director of the film.
So what?
Nakoula pleaded no contest in 2010 to federal bank fraud charges in California and was ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 21 months in federal prison and was ordered not to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.

His attorney cited Nakoula's poor health in a bid for leniency and home detention, stating his client suffered from Hepatitis C, diabetes that require twice-daily insulin shots, and other ailments that required more than 10 medications a day, according to a transcript of the sentencing. Many records in case remain sealed, but prosecutors sought a longer prison term and noted that he misused some of his own relatives' identities to open 600 fraudulent credit accounts. Nakoula apologized during the proceedings and his attorney James D. Henderson Sr. said Nakoula had learned his lesson.
About bank fraud, we hope, which was the point of his conviction and sentencing.
Henderson said during the hearing that his client had been enlisted by another man to open the accounts and had only received $60,000 to $70,000 from the fraudulent transactions. He got involved in the scheme after losing his job in the gas station industry and had been forced to work for a few dollars a weekend at swap meets to try to support his children and an ailing father, Henderson said, according to the transcript.

It could be difficult to establish a probation violation case against Nakoula. In the federal court system, the conditions of supervised release are geared toward the offense for which a defendant was found guilty and imprisoned. In Nakoula's case, the offense was bank fraud. His no contest plea was to charges of setting up fraudulent bank accounts using stolen identities and Social Security numbers, depositing checks from those accounts into other phony accounts and then withdrawing the illicit funds from ATM machines.
As long as he keeps his nose clean in terms of the law and his conviction he's free to do as he likes. If he wants to make a schtoopid film, fine, whatever.
While it was unclear what might have provoked authorities' interest, the filmmaker's use of a false identity and his access to the Internet through computers could be at issue, according to experts in cyber law and the federal probation system. Nakoula, who told the AP that he was logistics manager for the film, was under requirements to provide authorities with records of all his bank and business accounts.

The probation order authorized in June 2010 warned Nakoula against using false identities. Nakoula was told not to "use, for any purpose or in any manner, any name other than his/her true legal name or names without the prior written approval of the Probation Officer."

Federal prosecutors had charged that Nakoula used multiple false identities in creating his fraudulent accounts. Several, Nicola Bacily and Erwin Salameh, were similar to the Sam Bacile pseudonym used to set up the YouTube account for the anti-Islamic film. Other pseudonyms used in the accounts ranged from Ahmed Hamdy to P.J. Tobacco.

Nakoula was also told he could not have any access to the Internet "without the prior approval of the probation officer." Nakoula was ordered to detail any online devices and cellphones to authorities and was told his devices would be monitored and subject to searches.

Jennifer Granick, a criminal defense lawyer who specializes in online crimes, said authorities might not have been aware of Nakoula's online activity even if monitoring devices were placed on his computers. "That may be very hard for a probation officer to catch ahead of time."

Granick also noted that Nakoula's conviction for financial crimes might provide a basis for probation officials to review bank and other monetary records. "Somebody charged with a financial crime might receive some supervision categories where they might re-offend," she said.

There are indications that "Innocence of Muslims" may have already been under way as a film project when Nakoula was arrested. A casting call for actors and crew for a film called "Desert Warrior" ran in Backstage magazine, based in Los Angeles and New York, in May and June 2009. The casting call described the film project as a "historical Arabian Desert adventure" and listed a "Sam Bassiel" as producer.

One notice identified "Pharaoh Voice Inc."as the film's production company. California state records show Pharaoh Voice was incorporated in September 2007 by a "Youssef M. Basseley." The principal address for Pharaoh Voice in Hawaiian Gardens, a southern California community, is the same location where Nakoula lived until 2008, according to state records.

During an interview with AP, Nakoula denied that he was Sam Bacile, but acknowledged knowing him.

Arabia
Al Qaeda in Yemen urges Muslims to kill U.S. diplomats over film
DUBAI (Reuters) - The Yemen-based branch of al Qaeda urged Muslims to step up protests and kill more U.S. diplomats in Muslim countries after a U.S.-made film mocking the Prophet Mohammad which it said was another chapter in the "crusader wars" against Islam.
Now they'll use the film as an excuse...
"Whoever comes across America's ambassadors or emissaries should follow the example of Omar al-Mukhtar's descendants (Libyans), who killed the American ambassador," the group said, referring to Tuesday's attack on the U.S. consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi.

"Let the step of kicking out the embassies be a step towards liberating Muslim countries from the American hegemony," a statement posted on an Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) website on Saturday said.

"The film published in America which insults our Prophet Mohammad, peace be upon him, comes as part of the continuing crusader wars against Islam," AQAP's statement said, referring to European wars in the region some 1,000 years ago.
Which happened just yesterday in their brains...
"The incident is so huge that the resources of the nation should be pooled together to kick out the embassies of America from Muslim lands," it said.

Praising the attacks by angry demonstrators in Libya, Egypt, Yemen and Sudan on U.S. and other Western missions as "natural responses to a huge insult", the statement said that American embassies should be burned and diplomats killed. It said defending the Prophet's honor was a "religious duty and obligation to the Muslim nation, each according to his ability".

The group also said that Muslims living in the West have an extra duty to be involved in attacks on key targets. "They are more capable of doing harm and reaching the enemy is easier for them," it said.

Afghanistan
British troops help fight off Taliban attack on Afghan military base
British troops were involved in the firefight to repel the deadly Taliban terrorist attack on the military base in Afghanistan where Prince Harry is currently based, it was revealed this morning. At least two US Marines were killed in the terrorist strike on the base in Helmand province, which houses American and British troops among others.

Major Adam Wojack, a spokesman for International Security Assistance Force in Kabul, confirmed British forces had been involved in repelling the attack, alongside American troops. He said 18 terrorists attackers were killed and another one was wounded and being given medical treatment.

The sprawling base was now secure, he said, but it was unclear if operations were still ongoing outside the wire. Maj Wojack said: "The base is secure and we are assessing damage."

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence in London said: "After swift action by ISAF forces, which included UK personnel, the terrorist incident was contained." It is understood that the British troops were directly involved in the exchanges of fire.

A number of aircraft, hangars and other buildings at the base were hit and badly damaged by insurgent fire.

A Taliban terrorist spokesman said the attack was in revenge for an amateur film that mocked Islam, and because Prince Harry was known to be at the base.

The Prince, who was deployed recently, is not believed to have been involved in the fighting, which came after the Taliban fighters managed to break through an outer fence and attack the airfield inside the base.

The coalition base comprises the British Camp Bastion and the American Camp Leatherneck, and accommodates more than 21,000 people. Camp Leatherneck itself, which was built to cope with the extra US troops, measures 13 sq miles. British troops are understood to provide security for the main runway on the American camp. The forces said Bastion had not been breached.

Three policemen killed in Dagestan
Three policemen were killed during a security operation in the Russian republic of Dagestan on Saturday. Earlier, it had been reported that one officer was killed and two others wounded.

Local police reportedly came into contact with terrorists insurgents in the village of Khutrakh while conducting a search operation. The terrorists insurgents have blocked themselves inside a building on the outskirts of the village.

Russian army bombs school mistaken for terrorist base

An army unit that rained mortar rounds upon a Dagestani school was aiming for terrorists insurgents hiding elsewhere in the area. Several rounds exploded at a boarding school in the city of Buinaksk on early Thursday, injuring no one, but damaging the building.

At first, the incident was blamed on military exercises, but the Defense Ministry later said none were being held in the area at the time.

An investigation showed that the army was hunting Islamist terrorists rebels around Buinaksk on Thursday night. The squad commander gave the wrong directions to the mortar crew, which fired at the school instead of the terrorist militant hideout.

No terrorsts militants were reported killed in the vicinity of Buinaksk on Thursday, though the leader of the so-called “Kizlyar gang” was gunned down some 160 kilometers to the north of the city.

Home Front: WoT
The reign of imagination
....FOLLOWING THE September 11 attacks, the US Congress formed the bipartisan 9/11 Commission and charged it with determining the causes of the assault and recommending a course of action for the government to follow to prevent such attacks from happening again. It took the commission members nearly three years to finish their report. In the end, they claimed that the chief failure enabling the attacks was "one of imagination."

Unfortunately for the US, the commissioners had things backwards. It wasn't that imagination failed America before September 11. It was that imagination reigned in America. And it still does.

It's just that the land of make-believe occupied by the US foreign policy elite has shifted.

Until September 11, 2001, the US foreign policy elite was of the opinion that the chief threat to US national security was the fact that the US was a "hyperpower."

That is, the chief threat to the US was the US itself.

After September 11, the US decided that the main threat to the US was "terror," against which the US declared war. The perpetrators of terrorism were rarely mentioned, and when they were they were belittled as "marginal forces."

Those forces, of course are anything but marginal. The Islamic ideology of jihad is the predominant ideology in the Muslim world today.

The rallying cry of al-Qaida - the shehada - is the cry of Muslim faith. Jihadist Islam is the predominant form of Islam worshiped in mosques throughout the world. And the ideology of jihad is an ideology of war against the non-Islamic world led by the US.

Then-president George W. Bush and his administration imagined a world where the actual enemies of the US were marginal forces in Islam. They then determined - based on nothing - that the masses of the Muslim world from Gaza to Iraq to Afghanistan and beyond were simply Jeffersonian democrats living under the jackboot. If freed from tyranny, they would become liberal democrats nearly indistinguishable from regular Americans.

With President Barack Obama's inauguration, the imaginary world inhabited by the American foreign policy elite shifted again. Obama and his advisers agree that jihadist Islam is the predominant force in the Muslim world. But in their imaginary world, jihadist Islam is a good thing for America.

Hence, Turkish Prime Minister Recip Erdogan is Obama's closest confidante in the Middle East despite his transformation of Turkey from a pro-Western secular republic into a pro-Iranian Islamic republic in which secularists are jailed without trial for years on end.

Hence Israel - the first target of jihadist Islam's bid for global supremacy - is a strategic burden rather than an ally to the US.

Hence the US abandoned its most stalwart ally in the Arab world, Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, and supported the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood to power in the most strategically vital state in the Arab world.

Hence it supported a Libyan rebel force penetrated by al-Qaida.

Hence it is setting the stage for the reinstitution of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Sue French Magazine over Topless Pics
[An Nahar] Britannia's Prince William and his wife Catherine on Friday launched a lawsuit against French magazine Closer for printing topless pictures of her, the royal family said.

"St James's Palace confirms that legal proceedings for breach of privacy have been commenced today in La Belle France by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge against the publishers of Closer Magazine La Belle France," a spokeswoman said.

The grainy pictures of the couple on holiday in the south of La Belle France show Catherine, 30, wearing just the bottoms of a black and white bikini and having suncream rubbed onto her by William by the side of a swimming pool.

The royal couple were said by aides to be furious and hugely saddened over a "grotesque" invasion of their privacy, which evoked painful memories of press harassment of William's late mother Diana.

The legal suit was lodged with a court in Nanterre in the Gay Paree suburbs, near to where the glossy magazine has its headquarters, according to sources close to the case.

3 Killed, 28 Hurt in Attack on U.S. Embassy in Tunis
[An Nahar] Three people were killed on Friday and another 28 maimed in festivities at the U.S. embassy in Tunis, which was stormed by an angry mob protesting a film mocking Islam, official media said, citing the health ministry.

Two of the injured were in a critical condition, the same source said, without giving any details about the victims.

Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, from the ruling Islamist party Ennahda, said he was "deeply troubled" by the attack, official media reported.

"Hamadi Jebali has said he is deeply troubled by these events" and "has returned immediately to Tunis," after earlier saying he would be away on holiday for Friday and Saturday, the TAP news agency said.

Protesters also set fire to an American school adjacent to the embassy compound, and firefighters were prevented from approaching by the large crowd. Thick columns of black smoke wafted through the neighborhood. The group that breached the embassy's outer wall was pushed back outside by police and special forces.

A Tunisian employee of the embassy with an injured leg was taken out by stretcher to an ambulance.

Crowds angry over an anti-Mohammedan film ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad have assaulted U.S. embassies across the Middle East.

Tunisia holy mans, at mosques in the capital, had earlier called for protests outside the embassy to denounce a film mocking Islam posted on the Internet that has sparked anger across the Islamic world.

The amateur American-made video called "Innocence of Mohammedans," in which actors have strong American accents, portrays Mohammedans as immoral and gratuitously violent.

The IJT activists had gathered on the road to demonstrate against the Punjab government and the police for failing to arrest the killers of Punjab University law college student Awais Aqeel.

The student-activists blocked road to traffic for a while, demanding that the police arrest the killers of Awais Aqeel. Chanting slogans, they moved from the Campus bridge and marched towards the Mohammedan Town cop shoppe to stage a sit-out.

A contingent of police baton-charged the protesters who retaliated, only to be tossed in the clink
You have the right to remain silent...
and stuffed into small cop shoppe rooms. PU IJT Nazim Rai Haq Nawaz negotiated with the Mohammedan Town police (the cop shoppe also houses the Iqbal Town SP office) and got all activists freed.

IJT front man Malik Arif Husain claimed that four of the protesters were maimed during the clash.

The IJT activists, on their way back, stopped a public transport bus on Wahdat Road (Bhekewal Morr) and set fire to it after letting the crew and commuters disembark. Firefighters took some time to tame the flames.

Earlier, the IJT activists were charged with torching two buses on May 18, when they had staged a protest demonstration against the murder of Awais Aqeel at the PU New Campus hostel on May 13.

DIG (Operations) Rai Muhammad Tahir said the police would register a case against the IJT activists for torching the bus.

Motorbikes banned in Bajaur
[Dawn] The administration has banned use of cycle of violences for travel in Salarzai tehsil of Bajaur Agency, aka Turban Central
...Smallest of the agencies in FATA. The Agency administration is located in Khar. Bajaur is inhabited almost exclusively by Tarkani Pashtuns, which are divided into multiple bickering subtribes. Its 52 km border border with Afghanistan's Kunar Province makes it of strategic importance to Pakistain's strategic depth...
, while rustics say the decision is unjustified and would create more problems for them.

The residents said that the political administration on Thursday imposed ban on cycle of violence rides in Salarzai area.

"The announcement was made by levies officials at different trade centres," a resident Habib Khan told Dawn.

Justifying the decision, the administration officials said that the step was taken for security reasons.

"Riding cycle of violence has been banned in Salarzai tehsil from Friday (today) and strict action will be taken against the violators," said an administration official. He added that the decision was taken in the larger interest of people, as snuffies could use cycle of violences for anti-social activities in the area.

Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, the SWAT team had finally arrived...
rustics from different areas of Salarzai tehsil expressed resentment over the decision, saying the ban would create problems for them.

"This ban is unjustified, as the rustics are already affected by Death Eater activities," said Noor Mohammad, a resident of Baro Salarzai.

Malik Fazal Rabi, Malk Noorzada and Aslam Khan said that snuffies had never used cycle of violence for their activities in the area and the ban would only affect people of areas having no facility of public transport.

Use of cycle of violence for travel in parts of the agency including, Khar, Nawagi, Chamarkand, War Mamound, Lovi Mamound and Utmankhail tehsil, had been banned since 2007.

U.S. Marines Sent to Yemen over Anti-American Unrest
[An Nahar] The United States has sent Marines from the Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team to help protect its embassy in Yemen during demonstrations, the Pentagon said Friday.

"A FAST platoon is now on the ground in Sanaa," front man George Little told news hounds, describing the deployment of the 50-strong unit as a "precautionary step" amid anti-American unrest in the Middle East.

Little told news hounds there were no immediate plans to evacuate the Yemen embassy, but that security would be stepped up.

Earlier, Yemeni security forces had fired warning shots and water cannon to disperse hundreds of protesters trying to reach the U.S. embassy in Sanaa after Friday prayers.

The protesters, angered by a film produced privately in the United States and deemed insulting to Islam, gathered about 500 meters (yards) away from the embassy compound and burnt the American flag.

Similar protests were also underway outside Yemen in other cities with large Moslem populations, including Cairo, Khartom, Tunis, Lahore and Mumbai.

Salafist Protestors Burn U.S. Flags in Morocco's Sale
[An Nahar] Hundreds of Salafists
...Salafists are ostentatiously devout Moslems who figure the ostentation of their piety gives them the right to tell others how to do it and to kill those who don't listen to them...
burned U.S. flags in Morocco after Friday prayers in protest over a U.S.-made film that mocks Islam and has sparked unrest in several Arab countries, an Agence La Belle France Presse photographer reported.

The protest took place after weekly prayers at a mosque in the poor Rahma neighbourhood of Sale, twin town to the Moroccan capital Rabat.

Around 200 of the hardline Islamists gathered, shouting anti-U.S. slogans including "American satan," before trampling on two U.S. flags and then ripping them up and setting them ablaze.

The security forces were not in evidence.

Anti-American protests have spread across the Arab world and to many Moslem-majority countries following the spread on the Internet of the amateur American-made video called "Innocence of Moslems."

The film, in which actors have strong American accents, and which portrays Moslems as immoral and gratuitously violent, also pokes fun at the Prophet Mohammed and touches on the themes of paedophilia and homosexuality.

Between 300 and 400 Moslem activists gathered outside the U.S. consulate in Morocco's largest city Casablanca on Wednesday, amid a heavy police presence, protesting against the film and shouting anti-U.S. slogans.

Indonesian Protesters Say Anti-Islam Film Declares War
[An Nahar] More than 350 Moslem fundamentalists and their supporters staged an anti-U.S. demonstration in Jakarta Friday, spewing anger at America over an anti-Islam film.

Outside the U.S. embassy in the Indonesian capital, the protesters -- men and women with children in tow -- carried banners that read "We condemn the insult against Allah's messenger", and the Koranic verse "There is no God but Allah".

A speaker from the pro-Caliphate organization Hizb ut-Tahrir that organized the protest, told the crowd: "This film insulted our prophet and we condemn it. The film is a declaration of war."

The crowd shouted back: "holy shit! Allahu akbar!" (God is greatest), while police clad in riot gear stood guard nearby.

Another speaker declared: "The U.S. does not deserve to stay here," as the crowd roared that Americans be expelled from the world's largest Moslem nation.

Protests have erupted since Tuesday outside U.S. diplomatic missions in several Arab and Moslem states against the low-budget movie "Innocence of Moslems", made in the United States and deemed offensive to Islam.

Washington has sought to keep a lid on the demonstrations by spelling out that the controversial film which sparked the violence was made privately by a small group of individuals with no official backing.

As the Hizb ut-Tahrir protesters dispersed, another group of 100 demonstrators from the country's minority Shiite Moslems took their place, shouting "death to America", and demanding that the film's director be executed.

"Under Islamic law, the film director must be punished by death. We will keep protesting until the U.S. government bans the film, apologizes to all Moslems and prosecutes the film director," Khadijah, one of the Shiite protesters, told AFP.

Jakarta police front man Rikwanto, who goes by one name, said about 400 coppers had been deployed to guard security around the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta. A strong police contingent, including dozens in riot gear, stood guard before the embassy grounds.

The embassy posted a new security message for U.S. citizens on its website, saying that in light of the protests "we strongly encourage you to follow good personal security practices, maintain a heightened situational awareness, and remain vigilant of your surroundings at all times".

The U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three other Americans were killed when heavily-armed snuffies launched a sustained four-hour attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi late Tuesday.

In the Yemeni capital, police on Thursday rubbed out four protesters and maimed 34 others when they opened fire on a crowd attempting to storm the US embassy.

In the Egyptian capital Cairo, police fired tear gas to disperse protesters outside the embassy, injuring more than 200 people, the health ministry there said.

The Grand Turk
Meanwhile, back in Turkey: Erdogan's long-term plan
Turkish PM systematically imposing Islamic law; sense of helplessness, rage spreads

The recent Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in Istanbul was amazing, but the audience was angry. Thousands of fans gathered outside the venue until the last minute to consume as much beer as possible, in a silent rage over the government's decision to ban the sale of alcohol inside.

The excuse was that the concert venue is located near the sacred Eyup mosque. Anti-government chants were heard here and there. Others checked the distance between the venue and the mosque using their smartphones - a little more than four kilometers. One of the fans voiced his concern over the fact that the distance between the mosque and the bustling, alcohol-filled Istiklal Street is almost the same as the distance between the mosque and the concert venue.

A friend of mine who manages a nearby restaurant told me that before a previous concert at a local university, Prime Minister Erdogan phoned the university's rector and instructed him to ban the sale of alcohol during the event, despite the fact that there are no mosques in the area. I told my friend that this would never pass in Israel. He said that in Turkey no one would dare defy Erdogan, who, according to my friend, employs mob-like tactics. "The government can always arrest some professors and deans and claim that they assist the underground Ergenekon organization," he told me.

A sense of helplessness is spreading among the old Turkish elite, as is the rage over the government's efforts to change the country's character. It is becoming more and more apparent that Erdogan has a long term 'human engineering' plan. He is working quietly, slowly and systematically. Recently Erdogan expanded compulsory school education from eight to 12 years. The goal was to circumvent the constitution and pave the way for middle school students to attend Islamic schools. It is difficult to bring high school students 'back to religion.' The alcohol ban at rock concerts is part of this trend, as are the attempts to reduce the sale of alcohol on beaches and discourage women from getting abortions.

Following three terms as prime minister, Erdogan is widely expected to seek the presidency in 2014 in order to concentrate all the powers in his hands, just as Putin did in Russia. His chances are great in the absence of a charismatic secular opponent. It appears that Erdogan will continue implementing his plan patiently over the next six years.

As a historian I consider all long-term 'human engineering' plans, from the kibbutz in Israel and the Soviet Union to the Islamic revolution in Iran. All 'human engineering' attempts have failed, apart from the great enlightenment of the French and American revolutions. Does Erdogan's traditional-conservative version have a greater chance of success in a 21st century that is slowly being engulfed by darkness?

Nigeria Troops Fire Shots to Disperse anti-U.S. Protest
[An Nahar] Nigerian soldiers fired live rounds in the air outside a mosque in the flashpoint city of Jos on Friday to disperse a crowd planning protests over a U.S.-made anti-Islam film, a front man said.

The soldiers "had to fire some warning shots in the air, but there were no casualties," Captain Salihu Mustapha, military front man in Plateau state, told Agence La Belle France Presss, putting the crowd at several hundred. "The placards they were carrying were denouncing America."

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has warned that "hard boyz may attempt to target U.S citizens and other Westerners."

2 Killed at U.S. Sudan Embassy as Islamists Storm German, British Missions
[An Nahar] A second protester was found dead outside the U.S. embassy in Sudan on Friday, his clothing soaked in blood, an Agence La Belle France Presse journalist said after a demonstrator was killed earlier when he was hit by a police vehicle.

The body was found at the foot of the compound's outer wall, but it was not immediately clear how he had died, the news hound said.

He said there were burning tires in the road to the embassy, while some trees alongside had also been set alight by protesters angered by an anti-Islam film made in the United States.

As the demonstrators began slowly to disperse, members of the security forces continued to target small groups of protesters with tear gas, the news hound said.

Around 5,000 protesters also stormed the embassies of Britannia and Germany, which was torched and badly damaged, an AFP news hound said.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters as several of them scaled the roof of the German embassy and others attacked its facade and tore down the flag to replace it with a black Islamist one, the news hound said.

The mob, furious over an anti-Islam film produced in the United States that has triggered similar violence in other parts of the Arab world, then set fire to the building.

They blocked the road to prevent the arrival of firefighters, prompting the security forces to fire more tear gas.

Eventually the firefighters were able to reach the building and began to extinguish the blaze, as the protesters then headed towards the American embassy, the AFP news hound said.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said staff at Berlin's mission were safe.

"The German embassy in Khartoum is currently the target of attacks by violent demonstrators. The embassy staff are safe. The crisis cell at the foreign ministry (in Berlin) is meeting and is in contact with the embassy," he said in a statement.

Westerwelle said the Sudanese ambassador to Germany had been summoned to his ministry on Friday and "unequivocally reminded of his government's duty to protect diplomatic missions."

Demonstrators also attacked the British embassy nearby, as the Foreign Office in London said it was monitoring the situation.

"We can confirm an ongoing demonstration outside the British embassy in Khartoum, and Sudanese police are at the scene," a Foreign Office front man told AFP.

Protests over a trailer for the anti-Islam film on YouTube first broke out Tuesday in Egypt and Libya, where the U.S. consulate in Benghazi came under attack by an armed mob which killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

The protests have since spread across other Arab and Moslem countries.

The low-budget movie "Innocence of Moslems," in which actors have strong American accents, portrays Moslems as immoral and gratuitously violent.

It pokes fun at the Prophet Mohammed and touches on themes of pedophilia and homosexuality, while showing him sleeping with women, talking about killing children and referring to a donkey as "the first Moslem animal."

It was not immediately clear why the German embassy in Khartoum was attacked, although Islamists frequently deplore the country's military role in Afghanistan.

Syrian army jets, helicopters batter Aleppo
[An Nahar] Syrian regime forces on Friday used fighter jets and helicopter gunships to pound the city and province of Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
, where fierce festivities raged around a military airport, monitors said.

Fighter jets bombarded the rebel-held towns of Al-Bab and Marea near Aleppo city, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, adding that army forces and rebels battled around Minnigh military airport.

Rebels have staged multiple attacks on military airports in past weeks, focusing on the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, Idlib in the northwest and Aleppo, the key battleground province of northern Syria.

As the army has increasingly employed fighter jets and helicopters in its attacks, the rebel Free Syrian Army has made military airports a strategic target, an FSA front man told AFP on Thursday.

Despite shelling by regime forces, as seen in videos posted online, residents of Marea, Aleppo city and towns across the northern province came out for anti-regime demonstrations after the weekly Moslem prayers, activists said.

The demonstrations were held under the slogan "Idlib: Cemetery of the planes and symbol of victory."

Demonstrations were also reported in the provinces of Damascus
...Capital of the last overtly fascist regime in the world...
, Idlib, Daraa in the south and Hama in central Syria where an unknown number of protesters were killed as regime forces opened fire in Hama city, the Observatory said.

In the central Aleppo district of Midan, regime forces carried air strikes on two cop shoppes which the rebels had taken over, according to Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

"Whenever the rebels take a cop shoppe, the regime destroys them," Abdel Rahman told AFP by phone. "Now no one controls these posts," he said, adding that "regime forces have deployed throughout Midan to try and push out the rebels."

In the Hanano district in the northeast of Aleppo city, air strikes destroyed another cop shoppe in the hands of the rebels, Abdel Rahman said.

Just south of Damascus, the army fired live ammunition at an anti-regime demonstration in the Paleostinian refugee camp of Yarmuk, according to the Local Coordination Committees -- a network of activists on the ground.

Near the capital, at least 15 soldiers were killed or maimed in an attack on their vehicle in the restive town of Douma, where festivities broke out near the municipal building, the Observatory said.

Also in Douma, northeast of Damascus, two non-combatants were killed as gunfire and army shelling broke out before dawn, while two others, including a woman, were killed in nearby Harasta.

In Damascus itself, three large kabooms were heard in the late morning, according to an AFP news hound. The Observatory said that security forces swept its southern districts of Midan and Nahr Aisha.

At least 16 people were killed on Friday, according to the Observatory, with the highest toll in Daraa province where eight civilians, including three children, were killed in air strikes on the town of Bosra al-Sham.

86 Arrested in U.S. Consulate Attack in India
[An Nahar] Eighty-six people were jugged
You have the right to remain silent...
on Friday after a group of several hundred Mohammedan protesters threw stones and smashed windows at the U.S. consulate in the Indian city of Chennai, police said.

"They smashed the window panes, surveillance camera and tried to scale over the compound wall, but we dispersed them while exercising restraint," a police brass hat said. "We made 86 arrests."

The violence flared during a protest organised by the Tamil Nadu Mohammedan Munnetra Kazhagam, an Islamist movement, against an anti-Islam film which has triggered similar protests in large parts of the Mohammedan world.

The protesters also burnt an effigy of U.S. President Barack Obama
Why can't I just eat my waffle?...
and an American flag, police said.

One group hurled stones, while others lifted iron barricades placed in front of the main gate to smash windows, police said.

"We have tightened the security and the situation is well under control," J.K. Tripathy, the police commissioner in the southern city, told local news hounds.

One of the organisers said that what had been planned as a peaceful protest was hijacked by bad boys.

"We wanted to organise a peaceful demonstration to express our dismay over the film, but the youngsters, who could not hold their nerves, ran and attacked the consulate office," Gunangudi Hanifa told Agence La Belle France Presse.

A front man for the consulate, who did not give his name, said that no staff had been hurt in the attack.

"No one was injured and all the staff members are safe," he said.

Malaysian Muslims protest anti-Islam film
[Al Ahram] Moslems held demonstrations across Malaysia on Friday, calling for the United States to prevent distribution of an anti-Islam film they said was part of a plot by "Christian beturbanned goons".

Violent protests that began in Egypt and Libya on Tuesday over the amateur, privately-produced US movie "Innocence of Moslems" had already spread to several other Moslem countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

But Friday marked the first, albeit peaceful, demonstrations in Moslem-majority Malaysia.

They included a group of about 30 people representing various Islamic organizations who marched to the US embassy in the capital Kuala Lumpur.

They handed over a memo to an embassy official calling for the US to take the clip off YouTube, prevent it being released, and to try the filmmakers for "crimes against human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
" and "inciting Moslems".

"They have insulted the Prophet Mohammed, portraying him as a sex maniac and gay," said demonstrator Aminuddin Yahya.

However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
he said the protesters were not against Christianity and condemned violence in Libya that lead to the deaths of the US ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three other Americans.

A crowd also held a demonstration at the Batu Caves, a popular tourist spot outside the capital, and Malaysian media reported another protest in the northern city of Ipoh.

The opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party said protests would be held at other cities around the country but AFP could not immediately confirm how widespread they were. There have been no reports of violence.

The low-budget movie portrays Moslems as immoral and gratuitously violent, pokes fun at the Prophet Mohammed and touches on themes of paedophilia and homosexuality.

Angry demonstrators have stormed the US embassy in Yemen and stoned Washington's mission in Cairo.

At least 60 percent of Malaysians are Moslems, but there is also a sizeable Christian minority.

There is mild tension between the two communities, with some Islamic groups in recent years accusing Christians of a concerted effort to proselytise Moslems, which is illegal in Malaysia.

No Protests Before Consulate Attacked, Says Guard
A Libyan security guard who said he was outside the U.S. consulate here when it was attacked Tuesday night has provided new evidence that the assault on the compound that left four Americans dead, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, was a planned attack by armed Islamists and not the result of anger over an online video mocking Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.

The guard, interviewed Thursday in the hospital where he is being treated for five shrapnel wounds in one leg and two bullet wounds in the other, said the consulate area was quiet -- "there wasn't a single ant outside," he said -- until about 9:35 p.m., when as many as 125 armed men descended on the compound from all directions.

The men lobbed grenades into the compound, wounding the guard and knocking him to the ground, then stormed through the facility's main gate, shouting "God is great" and moving to one of the many villas that make up the consulate compound. He said there had been no warning that an attack was imminent.

Many in Cuba thought Castro would not go Communist because of a large Catholic population in Cuba. However, in 1961 he declared Cuba communist and eliminated elections. Terrorists kill three in Mindanao robbery
Suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf terrorists militants shot and killed three employees when they held up a rubber buying station on Basilan island in Mindanao.

Mayor Roderick Fungay of Lamitan in Basilan said the five suspects arrived on board two motorcycles shortly after the three employees opened the station in a remote village of the town.

Fungay said that, at first, the suspects pretended to be customers, but moments later they drew out their handguns and announced a holdup. He said the gunmen shot the caretaker when he refused to hand over a bag with $10,000 in cash and then turned their guns on his two other companions before they fled.

In a related development, the military announced the arrest of two suspected Abu Sayyaf militants linked to the kidnapping of 20 people from a high-end resort in Palawan in May 2001.

Trove of classified docs missing from U.S. Consulate
The US administration is now facing a crisis in Libya. Sensitive documents have gone missing from the consulate in Benghazi and the supposedly secret location of the "safe house" in the city, where the staff had retreated, came under sustained mortar attack. Other such refuges across the country are no longer deemed "safe".

Some of the missing papers from the consulate are said to list names of Libyans who are working with Americans, putting them potentially at risk from extremist groups, while some of the other documents are said to relate to oil contracts. ...

Eight Americans, some from the military, were wounded in the attack which claimed the lives of Mr Stevens, Sean Smith, an information officer, and two US Marines. All staff from Benghazi have now been moved to the capital, Tripoli, and those whose work is deemed to be non-essential may be flown out of Libya.

U.S. Command MFO Base in Sinai under attack: Report of dead inside compound
From 'The Times of Israel'
The headquarters of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in the Sinai was attacked on Friday night by dozens of Bedouin Salafi gunmen, Israel's Channel 2 News reported.

Dozens of gunmen, in some 50 vehicles, surrounded the base and then 60-70 of them burst in, storming into the base amid heavy gunfire. Exchanges of fire were continuing into the night, the report said.

First reports of the attack surfaced a little after 8 p.m. local time. Half-an-hour later, Channel 2 reported that Egyptian troops had arrived at the base, to try to help to restore order.

The TV report cited conflicting accounts of casualties. One source indicated that three people had been killed. Another said there were no fatalities, but that three Colombian members of the force had been injured.

The attackers were described as Bedouin jihadists, possibly affiliated with Al-Qaeda. First reports said Al-Qaeda flags were seen flying at the base after the attack.

US forces dominate the MFO's 1,650-strong personnel. The MFO's mission is to oversee the arrangements for securing the Sinai as agreed by Israel and Egypt in their 1979 peace accords.

#5  Well, herded into starvation. The Navajo were relocated to Santa Rosa which worked till the Army moved even more tribes into the area overloading the available food supply. For the Sioux, the Army moved during the winter a real * of time to be in the field on the Northern Plains, but they could do it while the natives couldn't who found themselves without food or shelter. That forced the braves with their families to turn themselves in at the forts or starve/freeze.

On the other hand, tribes like the Crow readily aligned themselves with the Army for payback to their old tormentors, the Sioux. Allying with locals/natives was also a factor in consolidating the region.

Terror in Tamaulipas: 16 die

A total of 16 unidentified individuals have died in ongoing drug and gang related violence in Tamaulipas state, according to Mexican news accounts.

In a post on the website of El Sol de Mexico news daily, nine unidentified individuals were found hanging from the Colosio Bridge in the border city of Nuevo Laredo Friday. Security forces were alerted to the presence of the dead through social media, such as Twitter.

Mexican news reports say the dead were taken from a bar and from two homes in the city. Official sources have not reported how the victims died, or their identities.

Last May, nine dead bodies were left hanging from a bridge in Nuevo Laredo only hours after 14 other victims were found mutilated. It later transpired that many of those dead were innocents caught up in a gruesome struggle between the Los Zetas and Gulf drug cartels.

Nuevo Laredo is the only border/river crossing held by Los Zetas, and has come under an intense struggle as Sinaloa aligned Gulf Cartel has attempted to eject Los Zetas from their home turf.

Meanwhile in San Fernando municipality, seven unidentified men were found executed Friday morning by a Mexican Army unit operating in the area, according to a news item posted on Animal Politico website.

The army unit had been conducting a raid at around 0850 hrs at a location on Kilometer 18 of the San Fernando to La Carbonera road when soldiers found the victims. The dead were in their 50s and 60s, and had been bound, then shot to death using rifles.

Thai army talks with two top terrorists
The army is negotiating with two top terrorist separatist leaders to try to persuade them and their group to end their campaign of violence in southern Thailand.

The move follows this week's surrender of 93 terrorist insurgent suspects, led by Waeali Copter Waji, alias Jeh Ali, a suspect in the Jan 4, 2004 arms heist at the 4th Development Battalion.

Army sources say 4th Army commander Lt Gen Udomchai Thamsarorach has dispatched officers to negotiate with Sapaeing Basor and Masae Useng, leaders of the BRN Coordinate terrorist separatist group.

The officers accompanied several community leaders for the secret talks. Both terrorist separatist leaders are based abroad. Mr Sapaeing hopes to be prime minister of a Pattani state and Mr Masae its defense minister or army chief if their goal of independence is ever achieved.

The negotiations cover demands relating to their possible prosecution. The terrorist separatist leaders are also waiting to see how the authorities will deal with the 93 former terrorists militants.

Protests across Pakistan against anti-Islam film
[Dawn] Hundreds of people demonstrated in cities around Pakistain on Friday to denounce an anti-Islam movie, with some urging death for the film-maker and others demanding the expulsion of US diplomats.

The low-budget movie, entitled "Innocence of Moslems", which has sparked fury across the Moslem world, pokes fun at the Prophet Mohammed and touches on themes of paedophilia and homosexuality.

Police beefed up security around US missions in Pakistain after violent attacks on American consulates and embassies in Egypt, Libya and Yemen this week, but protests in the country's major cities on Friday passed off largely without incident.

Saeed -- who has a $10 million US government bounty on him -- urged the Pakistain government to summon the American ambassador to protest over the film.

"We condemn this conspiracy of producing (an) anti-Islam film. Such blasphemous acts are intentional conspiracies from the US and we will not tolerate it," he told the rally.

Around 400 protesters rallied in front of Islamabad's Red Mosque after Friday prayers, following a call from JI.

They called for the handover of Terry Jones, an American Christian pastor linked with the film, who has drawn protests in the past for burning the Koran.

"Terry Jones should be handed to us for a trial in the sharia court," a speaker at the rally told the gathering. Sharia courts try defendants according to Islamic law.

Another speaker called for closure of the US embassy and the expulsion of the US ambassador and other diplomats from Pakistain.

Elsewhere in the capital, there were two smaller demonstrations against the film, one of which led to brief scuffles with police.

Basseley was convicted in 2010 for bank fraud and released from prison on probation last June.

Eight terror suspects 'on the loose'
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Police have issued a fresh terror alert, saying eight suspects who are on the lam are planning to carry out deadly attacks in the country.

It followed the arrest of a Kenyan and Somalia national they said had been dispatched by Al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
to execute the plan, part of which was thwarted on Friday after the officers recovered a cache of explosives they intended to use.

The deadly weapons were found in a house Mr Abdulmajid Yasin Mohamed, 26, and Mr Suleiman Aden, 24, had rented in Nairobi's Eastleigh estate.

They included four suicide bomb vests, 12 hand grenades, four AK-47 assault rifles, 480 rounds of ammunition and two home-made bombs.

"Eight suspects are believed to be part of the syndicate and we shall be circulating their pictures so that anyone who recognises them can give the information to police," Police front man Eric Kiraithe said.

A detective close to the investigation but requested anonymity (because he is not authorised to give information to the media) said that beturbanned goons planned to detonate the explosives in churches and other public places Nairobi, Nanyuki and Kisumu.

Besides the kabooms, the attackers also planned to spray bullets on those who would survive the bombings as well security officers who would respond to the incidents.

The sting operation was carried out at 1am by a crack squad of the Special Crime Prevention Unit. The suspects did not put up any resistance when the officers surrounded the storey building, knocked at their door and ordered them out.

According to police, the recovered jacket wallah vests were similar to the ones used in the July 2010 bombings in Kampala, Uganda, in which 76 people died and many more injured.

Egypt's Brotherhood Withdraws Call for Nationwide Protests
[An Nahar] Egypt's Moslem Brüderbund on Friday withdrew calls for nationwide protests in response to a film that mocks Islam's Prophet Mohammed, saying they would instead participate in a "symbolic" demonstration.

"In light of the events of the last two days, the Brotherhood has decided to participate only in a symbolic protest in Tahrir Square, so that there is no more destruction to property, or injuries, or deaths, as has happened in the past," the group's secretary general Mahmoud Hussein said in a statement.

Thousands had protested angrily outside the American embassy on Tuesday against a low-budget U.S. film the "Innocence of Mohammedans" which ridicules the Prophet Mohammed, with one group scaling the embassy wall and tearing down the flag.

Since then small groups of demonstrators-- many of whom in their teens or even young children-- have been clashing with police and security forces trying to keep them away from the U.S. mission.

On Wednesday the Brotherhood had called for nationwide protests outside the main mosques in all of Egypt's 27 provinces "to denounce offenses to religion and to the Prophet."

The letter also said the homes of US consulate staff members may also be targeted. It further stated that suicide kabooms and remote control devices could also be used in a possible attack.

Maldives Stamps Down on 'Indecent' Dancing
[An Nahar] The Maldives on Thursday moved to limit dancing in public between men and women, an official and a report said, amid signs of the growing influence of the nation's hardline religious party.

The Islamic affairs ministry sent a circular "to all government institutions banning the holding of any mixed-gender dance events", the private Minivan newspaper said, quoting guidelines issued on Thursday.

The ministry also ordered a ban on events where adolescent girls were required to dance, the report said, adding that the directives were intended for both state bodies and individual citizens.

It was not immediately clear if the move was legally enforceable under existing regulations, and Minivan said there were exemptions.

"Events such as children's activities, performances exhibiting military skills, parades, playing the national anthem, boy scouts and girl guides performances... were acceptable forms of entertainment," it said.

There was no immediate comment from the president's office or the foreign ministry, but Youth Affairs Minister Mohamed Shareef said the "guidelines" were only targeting "indecent" behaviour.

"There is a public debate on music and dance and what is permissible according to religion and culture," Shareef said when contacted by telephone. "What the guidelines are saying is that if people are dancing in an indecent manner, it should not be allowed."

The move came as a Twitter account purporting to be from the religious Adhaalath Party, a part of the government, said "music and songs" were harming young people in the nation of 330,000 Sunni Moslems.

The party said in a brief text message it had nothing to do with the Twitter account that shared the name of their party, and that the party did not endorse the views expressed by on the feed, but did not elaborate on the new measures.

The Maldives is an Islamic republic known for its liberal lifestyle.

However authorities have been concerned about rising extremism in recent years and have resisted calls from Orcs and similar vermin to shut down luxury tourist resorts, which serve alcohol and pork.

Militia behind Kenya's Tana River Killings, Say Villagers
[An Nahar] Villagers targeted in a recent wave of tit-for-tat killings in southeast Kenya say trained militia, including men from outside the region, are behind the raids. And they suspect politicians may have brought them in.

The killings have pitted the Pokomo, a farming community, against their Orma pastoralist neighbors in the Tana River region. Clashes between the two tribes are normally attributed to disputes over water and grazing rights.

But local people say the latest violence -- in which more than 100 people have been killed in less than a month -- is largely fueled by politics.

"We were born into the conflict between Pokomos and Ormas," Kadze Kazungu, a Pokomo, told AFP in front of the blackened walls of what was once his house in Chamwanamuma village. "We have fought over land and water before.

"But whenever that occurs, elders from both tribes always find a way of resolving the issue," Kazungu added.

"This time it is not about land. It is politics. Bad politics."

On Wednesday an MP from the region was charged with inciting violence. Dhadho Godhana, the MP for Galole in the Tana River delta, denied the charges and was released on bail pending another hearing set for October 2.

But he has been dropped from his cabinet position as assistant livestock minister.

Kazungu's house was torched on Tuesday when Ormas launched attacks on several villages, killing four people and burning hundreds of homes.

The attacks were in retaliation for what was described as an attack on the Orma by the Pokomo they day before. But the villagers targeted say the assailants were not all Pokomo -- and were not all local people.

"Amongst the attackers were Pokomo boys I've known since they were small...," said Hadija Guyo, an Orma woman in one of the villages targeted told AFP.

"But the majority of the attackers were people we had never seen," she added. "Most of them did not even look like Pokomos."

The attackers were not villagers angered by a group of pastoralists, she said: "They attacked us with so much precision and in so little time. These were trained people."

The raiders came from all directions to surround the village, she recalled.

"The few who had guns were at the front, those with machetes behind them and then those with petrol and matches at the back," she said.

Another witness, who asked to remain anonymous, described how the assailants used whistles to coordinate the attack.

"They would whistle and a group would change direction and attack houses in a different area of the village," he said. "They would whistle again and those with the guns would move back a bit as the ones with machetes moved to the front."

A policeman, who was at the scene and who also spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP the raiders had stretchers made of branches and blankets with them.

"Their aim was to leave no man behind," he said.

For him, that meant that the assailants did not want any of their men who might be injured or killed to be identified.

Guyo accused the Mombasa Republican Council, a Mombasa-based secessionist group that was until very recently outlawed, of being behind Monday's attack, in which 38 people were killed.

It is believed that while the Pokomos are sympathetic to the secessionist cause of the MRC, the Ormas and other pastoralist tribes are against the group.

But Kazungu was cautious about such accusations.

"I cannot comment on the involvement of the MRC," he told AFP. "All I can say is that sympathizers are amongst us."

The MRC has denied any involvement.

"Those are rumors, we are not myrmidons," MRC secretary general Randu Nzai told AFP.

"We do not have a militia and we do not kill. We are a peaceful group and do all our lobbying through the court," he added.

Hadi Offers Apology over Events at US Yemen Embassy
[Yemen Post] President Abdrabu Mansour Hadi offered personal apology to the US President Barack Obama
This is a teachable moment...
and the US people after a large mob of Yemeni people stormed the US embassy in protest against a movie offending the prophet of Moslems, Muhammad, Saba reported Thursday.

"Those who attacked the US embassy in Yemen were a 'demagogic mob' that could not realize the Zionist aim, especially after a Jewish author published the offending movie," Hadi was quoted as saying.

"The mob sought to harm the Yemeni-US relations and, of course, they took advantage of improper security measures amid persistent divisions inside the security systems that were caused by the 2011 political crisis," he added.

According to eyewitnesses, the protesters flowed to the US embassy's HQ, broke into one of its external yards and burned some cars and other equipment.

They also burned tires on the streets and threw stones to inside the embassy. The authorities controlled the situation driving out those who broke in and now tense calm has been reported around the embassy. Eyewitnesses also said coppers at the heavily guarded building fired bullets in the air injuring people.

President Hadi warned that such acts will affect the good relations between the Yemen and US peoples, Saba said, pointing out that he has formed a panel to investigate the events at the US embassy and punish those involved.

One of the protesters said they all wanted to get inside the US embassy in Sanaa to send a message that offending Islam and its symbols such Prophet Muhammad is 'completely unacceptable'.

"Islam teaches us to respect the religions, messengers and beliefs of the others. But the Western countries which allege protection and respect of other religions continue to offend the Moslems," Talal Al-Khateeb said.

Answering how the movie has offended Muhammad, Talal said the prophet was pictured as sexy and killer and the movie also degraded the Moslems in general.

The US increased its aid to Yemen this year and is one of the sponsors of the power-transfer deal that was reached after the last year's uprising.

Obama vows to stand fast against anti-US violence
[Dawn] President Barack Obama
I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody...
vowed Friday to "stand fast" against anti-US violence in the Arab world, as he witnessed the return to US soil of the remains of four Americans killed in Libya.

"Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, we will bring to justice those who took them from us. We will stand fast against the violence on our diplomatic missions," Obama said at Andrews Air Force base outside Washington.

US ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, information officer Sean Smith, and former navy seals Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were killed when a mob torched the US consulate in Benghazi on Tuesday.

Their remains were carried, one-by-one from the belly of a C-17 transport aircraft by seven marines in dress uniform, in transfer cases draped in the US flag into an aircraft hangar at Andrews Air Force base outside Washington.

A band played somber music as the cases were lifted into four black hearses parked inside the hanger before family members of the dead, officials and other dignitaries.

Obama cited the Bible verse that "greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends," as he said the four "American patriots"loved their country and served it well.

"They didn't simply embrace the American ideal, they lived it, they embodied it, the courage, the hope and, yes, the idealism, that fundamental American belief that we can leave this world a little better than before."

Earlier, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as The Heroine of Tuzla and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Walter Q. Gresham ...
said that the "people of Egypt, Libya, Yemen, and Tunisia did not trade the tyranny of a dictator for the tyranny of a mob."

This is pretty much their version of the same concept with manpower doing with what we do with technology. Embassies don't have the mobility that their targeted agents have. Makes the intel gathering and tracking a lot easier. Even more easy when one has sympathetic agents in the local government. Of course, the idiots at State think its all a grand game, till it bites them hard on the a**.

#10  We're STILL not playing "strong horse", so we'll keep getting kicked around. My solution to the current situation is to ARCLIGHT the he$$ out of Cairo and Alexandria (with the carriers of the 6th fleet taking out the air defenses so nothing interrupts the lesson), then nuke the Aswan High Dam with the biggest, dirtiest nuke in our arsenal. Egypt will be uninhabitable for 100 years, at minimum. At the same time, tell Israel we'll sit back and watch as they wipe out all Islamists in Gaza and the Sinai, and give control of the Suez Canal to them. Also tell the UNIFIL crowd they need to evacuate post haste while Israel constructs a nuclear "Hezbollah-free" zone from just north of its borders to just north of Beirut, and all of the Bekaa Valley. THAT would be a lesson the Islamists could understand. Nothing else is going to get past the "Islam will win" filter they possess. Stacking dead bodies 20-high has a way of affecting one's memory, especially if they fear they could be added to the pile any minute. I am beginning to hate anyone even remotely Arab, and I'm fast adding Persians, Afghanis and Pakistanis to the list.

Threatening posters panic people in Peshawar suburbs
[Dawn] The display of Taliban's posters at prominent places in Matani Bazaar on the outskirts of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
has panicked local people, especially traders, who have demanded beefing up security in the suburban areas.

The residents of the area told Dawn that three posters ostensibly pasted by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain in the bazaar remained displayed for two days till Wednesday's night.

"The display of intimidating posters in the bazaar is a direct threat to the lives and properties of the people. It shows that beturbanned goons are active in the area without any check on them by the law enforcement agencies," said shopkeepers in the bazaar on condition of anonymity.

They said that a blast in the bazaar on Aug 31 had already frightened people. They expected that administration would take effective steps for protection of people but again threatening posters started appearing in the area, they added.

A frightened shopkeeper said that most of the people avoided talking about the posters because they looked upon each other as informers of bad turbans. That's why they could not devise a plan to protect themselves from bad turbans, he added.

The shopkeeper said that one of the posters was a direct warning to those people, who were supporting anti-Taliban peace committees. The other posters carried a message for those peace volunteers, who had helped police in setting up a checkpost in the bazaar, he said.

The shopkeeper said that the third poster appreciated the people of Matani for not supporting anti-Taliban peace bodies. The poster said that Taliban could get information about happening of everything in the area and it would be better for the people to focus on their business, he said.

"We are used to such threats but common people, mainly businessmen, are really worried because they are vulnerable to attacks and kabooms," Fazl Malik deputy chief of Adezai Qaumi Lashkar, told Dawn on Thursday. He said that beturbanned goons could not display posters in the bazaar without help of local people. He said that they informers of Taliban in the area kept them
informed about movement of peace committee workers and government officials otherwise they were not in a position to attack anyone in broad daylight.

Mr Malik said that movement of suspected beturbanned goons had increased in the suburban areas of Peshawar. He said that they were also informed about presence of would-be jacket wallahs in the areas.

He said that Taliban were asking people to avoid supporting police and forming peace bodies against them. He said that volunteers of his peace body were ready to face Taliban.

An official of Matani cop shoppe said that they got information about display of the posters but he avoided sharing details with this scribe. He said that station house officer himself visited parts of the bazaar but could not find any poster.

"Police are put at red alert to keep vigilance on the movement of suspected elements," the official claimed and added that situation in the area was under control.

Iraq
Iraqis Burn U.S., Israeli Flags in Anti-Islam Film Demo
[An Nahar] Iraqi protesters burned U.S. and Israeli flags as thousands of people demonstrated for a second day Friday in cities and towns across Iraq against an anti-Islam film that has sparked outrage in the Moslem world.

In the biggest protest, thousands of people turned out in the southern port city of Basra, carrying Iraqi flags and shouting slogans including: "There is no freedom by abuses to the feelings of two billion Moslems."

The protesters burned American and Israeli flags, an AFP correspondent said.

Hundreds of people also protested in the Sunni-majority Adhamiyah area of north Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
after Friday prayers, while dozens of people, mainly from various Shiite parties, also demonstrated in the capital's Tahrir Square.

In Karbala, Abdul Mehdi al-Karbalai, the representative in the city of top Iraqi Shiite holy man Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, said during his Friday sermon that "these repeated abuses could threaten peaceful life, especially among (religiously) mixed peoples."

He also condemned violence in response to the film, which portrays the Prophet Mohammed and Islam in a negative light, and sparked deadly fury in Libya, where four Americans including the ambassador were killed on Tuesday in a mob attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

In Sunni-majority Ramadi, west of Storied Baghdad, hundreds of people demonstrated against the film.

Hamid al-Fahdawi, one of the protest organizers, told AFP that demonstrators want the Iraqi government to dismiss the U.S. ambassador and cut economic ties with the U.S.

Dozens of demonstrators also turned out in the former Sunni cut-thoat stronghold of Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
also west of the Iraqi capital.

Sadr al-Din al-Qubanchi, a senior Shiite holy man who leads Friday prayers in the shrine city of Najaf, called for the United States to apologize to Moslems and surrender all those who worked on the film to a special Islamic court.

The governor of Nineveh province, Atheel al-Nujaifi attended a demonstration against the film in djinn-infested Mosul, in north Iraq.

There were also protests in various cities in Diyala province, and in other cities and towns including Hilla, Amara and Nasiriyah.
