Obama can be sued over insulting film: Iran official
A senior Iranian official says US President Barack Obama could face legal action in connection with the production of an anti-Islam movie by an American Jew.

“A complaint could be filed with US courts against Obama for his violation of articles 18 and 27 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) calling for respect of faiths,” Javad Mohammadi, the deputy head of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution (SCCR), said on Sunday.

“Article 18 and 27 of the ICCPR, adopted by the United Nation, stipulate that the religion and the rights of the minorities should be respected,” Mohammadi said.

The US government is a signatory to this covenant and has to respect it. Therefore, an individual or an NGO (non-governmental organization) can file a lawsuit against the president of the country for breach of the covenant, he added.

Mohammadi heaped praise on the Muslims for their massive protests against the movie, noting “Protest against insults to religious sanctities should not be limited to time, place and customary reactions and we should undertake legal measures.”

“The world’s elite know pretty well that Islam is a divine religion and Muslims have always respected divine religions and messengers and would never remain silent vis-à-vis any desecration,” the official said.

Leading Sunni Clerics Demand Global Ban on Insults to Islam
Six months after declaring that all churches in the Arabian peninsula should be destroyed, Saudi Arabia's top cleric called at the weekend for a global ban on insults targeting all religious "prophets and messengers," a category that, from a Muslim perspective, includes Jesus Christ.

Saturday's demand by Saudi grand mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh came on the same day that another of Sunni Islam's most prominent figures, Egypt's Al-Azhar University grand imam Ahmed el-Tayyeb, made a similar appeal.

Both men were reacting to an amateur video satirizing Mohammed, whose emergence on the Internet has been blamed for protests targeting American diplomatic missions across the Islamic world. According to wire services at least 12 deaths have been linked to the protests since Thursday, with deaths reported in Tunisia, Sudan, Pakistan, Yemen, Lebanon and Egypt.

The two clerics' calls are a new salvo in an unremitting campaign by Islamic political and religious leaders, spearheaded by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to pressure non-Muslims to treat Islam with deference.

In a statement released by the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Asheikh "appealed to all countries and international organizations to criminalize acts ridiculing all prophets and messengers (peace be upon them)."

The kingdom's Arab News pointed out that he was referring to such figures as "Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Mohammed."
Well, that last line of prophets would make the liberal artists in New York eligible for a Islam beheading. Let me be the first to tell the cleric to fuck off and he can take his goofy ass moon god and shove it up his ass along with Mohammed's beard.

Aristocracies always have bags of second (third, fourth ...) sons who tempt fate and earn some sort of glory for themselves or die trying.

Give the man the space to earn some sort of self-respect, in lieu of being King.

#1  Control of Jerusalem is pivotal in Biblical proportions. The loss of Jerusalem was for told in Biblical scripture (70 AD). So was the restoration of the Israel (1948 AD). The next major Biblical milestone will be the complete annexation of Jerusalem into Jewish hands. That signals the end of the Age of the Gentile (70AD to when all of Jerusalem is claimed by the Jews). Then comes the wrath of the world upon the Jewish state.

The forces of evil seek the total destruction of the Jewish nation. The resurgence of Israel after two millenium is unsettling to the forces of evil and this will hasten the near annihilation of mankind, the deaths of as many as 1/3 of mankind in possibly nuclear holocaust (2 billion people).

#5  During a House subcommittee hearing examining fairness in voting rights enforcement, Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitution, referenced an article detailing a meeting between top Justice Department officials and Islamist advocates, where the advocates reportedly lobbied officials for “a legal declaration that U.S. citizens’ criticism of Islam constitutes racial discrimination.”

Later in the hearing, Franks brought up the issue again, asking Perez pointedly, “Will you tell us here today that this administration’s Department of Justice will never entertain or advance a proposal that criminalizes speech against any religion?

When Perez didn’t answer the question, Franks said, “Now that’s not a hard question.”

Obama’s Middle East Delusions
VDH via Instapundit
Globalization certainly did not bring the premodern world of the Middle East closer together with the postmodern West — despite Barack Obama’s 2007 narcissistic vows that his own intellect and background could bridge such a gap. If anything, the more we know about each other, the more we sense we are back to Lepanto and the siege of Vienna. Since the 9/11 anniversary attacks, the Obama administration has seemed bewildered, petulant, and more or less shocked in Casablanca-style fashion about the hatred shown the United States — whether overt among the Arab Street, or implicit among Arab governments’ wink-and-nod inability to protect U.S. embassies. It apparently forgot some basic rules about how to deal with radical Islam, and instead regressed back to the old familiar appeasement that led to 9/11/2001.

I. Pretexts
Mr. President, do not obsess over the pretext of the day. Terry Jones is only as crude as Andres Serrano and his Piss Christ, which I don’t recall warranted a personal call from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs to the artist to cool it, much less a federal effort to detain a Coptic filmmaker. Sometimes Muslims will rage at a Rushdie novel, sometimes at a papal reference to a Byzantine letter, and at other times at a supposedly flushed or torched Koran. Or maybe a grainy amateurish video will be set them off to kill a nun, blow up a priest, burn down an embassy, or assassinate a Western ambassador. There are three-hundred-million-plus free-thinking Americans, and thus at least that many possible “slights” — if you choose to go down that road of blaming free expression rather than the primeval mind that objects to it.

-Election 2012
How Republics Fall
The Fourth Estate's degrading hero worship trivializes an election.

The weird ecstasy of the media-political complex at the convention in Charlotte last month was the first sign that its attachment to President Obama, always fawning, had become morbid.

In spite of the anemic economy and a real unemployment rate above 11 percent, the high priests of pontificating liberalism were giddy with euphoria. The Democrats "put on a nearly flawless convention," Paul Begala opined, and it was soon all but incontrovertibly established that, come November, the president -- beautiful, magical, and lovable as he was -- would vanquish his boring opponent.

The media savants sympathized with the delirium of Charlotte because they worship at the same altar and feed at the same trough. Two and a half centuries ago Edmund Burke said the reporters' gallery in Parliament was an estate "more important far than" the other three put together. Today America's Fourth Estate is not merely predisposed, as it has been for generations, to favor a particular political party: It is deeply engaged in the hero worship of a particular political leader.

The closeness of mainstream journalists to President Obama has debauched their integrity. Some of them give the White House veto authority over their stories. Others look to be rewarded with plum jobs or stimulus-funded ads. This abasement before power presages a return to a time when political writers, among them Swift and Defoe, were the professed protégés of statesmen and relied on Whig or Tory patronage for their bread; it also leaves the country vulnerable to the distortions of ostensibly neutral journalists who are too fervently committed to the leader to tell the truth about him.

Regulatory Tsunami To Hit Business If Obama Wins Second Term
Last fall, President Obama decided to cancel a hugely expensive new EPA rule designed to cut smog levels across the country. Obama said he did so out of concern about the rule's impact on jobs.

It was just one of many costly regulations the Obama administration has put on hold or delayed in the run-up to the election, as the president tried to dispel the impression that he's anti-business.

"I have continued to underscore the importance of reducing regulatory burdens and regulatory uncertainty," Obama said when he put the brakes the smog standard, "particularly as our economy continues to recover."

But if Obama wins re-election, all these postponed rules, along with a host of other costly regulations, will likely hit the economic shores.

Using official government sources, the National Federation of Independent Business calculates that there are more than 4,000 federal rules in the pipeline, and that just the 13 biggest ones would, if imposed in an Obama second term, cost businesses a total of more than $515 billion over four years.

That tally doesn't include the more than 100 still-to-be-written regulations needed to enforce the Dodd-Frank financial reform law, or the mountain of regulations required by ObamaCare. The health law has already resulted in thousands of pages of rules, including 18 pages simply to define what a "full-time employee" is.

Among the most expensive new rules now waiting in the wings:

Smog rules. Although Obama canceled those extremely tight new standards -- which would put most of the country out of compliance and cost $90 billion a year to meet -- he promises to revisit the issue in 2013 and could easily reverse course.

Food safety rules. The Food and Drug Administration finished up vast new food safety rules by the end of last year, but they've been held up by the White House. The cost isn't clear, although the administration admits that the price tag for the rules dealing with imported food "will be significant."

Auto mandates. The Department of Transportation wants to require all new cars to include a rear-view video camera that turns on when cars are backing up. The cost? $10.8 billion over four years.

Greenhouse gas rules. The EPA had planned to release new rules limiting greenhouse gas emissions from oil refineries by this November, but now says it won't issue the rules until next year at the earliest. The oil industry says that, depending how the EPA writes the rule, it could be "very expensive."

Gasoline rules. The EPA's so-called tier 3 rule, which would cut the sulfur content of gasoline, is also in the works. The oil industry figures it will cost refiners $9.8 billion up front and more than $2 billion a year, boosting gas prices as much as 9 cents a gallon.

Fracking rules. The Interior Department says it will issue rules regulating hydraulic fracturing on public lands by the end of this year. The industry expects the rule will cost $1.5 billion a year.

Clean water rules. Last year, the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers drafted a guidance document that could give it vast new authority under the Clean Water Act. The proposal is currently awaiting the White House's approval. A House bill to block this effort has attracted more than a dozen Democratic co-sponsors.

Other regulations in the works include those covering coal ash, toxic pollutants, cooling water intakes at power plans, sunscreens, fine particles, new efficiency standards, and various workplace rules.

Despite the recent administration pause in issuing new rules, and the regulatory review Obama ordered in January 2011, the president has, by every measure, been an aggressive regulator.

In the first 3 1/2 years, his administration issued 37% more "economically significant" regulations -- those costing $100 million or more -- than had the Bush administration in his first 3 1/2 years, according to data from the White House Office of Management and Budget.

A broader analysis by the Heritage Foundation that includes independent agencies found Obama had imposed nearly four times as many new regulations as Bush in his first three years, with a combined price tag of $46 billion a year.

And Obama has added more than 11,000 pages (or 7%) to the Federal Register -- the guidebook containing all the federal rules.

Businesses, meanwhile, have been complaining loudly about the growing intrusiveness of federal regulations. An August study by Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation found that the cost of major regulations has climbed an average 7.8% a year since 1998, while industry output has climbed a mere 0.4%.

A Gallup survey earlier this year found that almost half of small businesses cite worries about new government regulations as a reason they're not hiring.

The results prompted Gallup's chief economist, Dennis Jacobe, to suggest that lawmakers "place a moratorium on new regulations for some period of time," which he said would help "get the economy growing at a pace the average American can recognize as an economic recovery."

For his part, Romney has promised to overturn Dodd-Frank and ObamaCare, "tear down the vast edifice of regulations the Obama administration has imposed" and require congressional approval of new "major" regulations.

-Election 2012
For Barack Obama, it's 1979 all over again ("It's déjà vu all over again" redux Jimmy Carter).
Images of Muslim extremists storming an American embassy recall the Iranian revolution and force the US president to focus on foreign policy.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- His eye fixed firmly on securing a second term, President Barack Obama had hoped that the rest of the world would wait until after the election if it had to grow restless and demand his attention.
It doesn't appear the rest of the world has decided to wait.
The eruptions in the streets of the Arab world, inflamed by an anti-Muslim video made in the US, mean Obama can put it off no longer. The protests are testing the president's foreign policy skills and giving voters a pre-election view of how he handles a crisis.
Er, er, er I vote Present.
The turmoil also offers an opportunity -- a risky one -- for Obama to appear presidential in the midst of the election campaign, to contrast himself with a challenger less experienced in foreign policy and to illustrate that being president is not just about being a steward of the economy.
Empty chair symbolism comes to mind.
Even with a rebellion in Syria and tensions over Iran's nuclear ambitions, no international image can be more searing and demand more public attention than that of a US embassy under attack and American civilians in peril. This week's angry demonstrators, flag burnings and imperiled civilians already were drawing comparisons to 1979, when Iranian revolutionaries stormed the US Embassy in Tehran and took 60 hostages and held them for 444 days, helping erode President Jimmy Carter's public support.
The barbarians are at the gates.
For Obama, the timing of the violent demonstrations less than two months before the election creates further complications.
Well, there's the golf and my meetings with Pimp with the Limp, Beyonce, and Morsi.
His rival, Mitt Romney, jumped on the administration for what he claimed was a feckless response to the breach of the US Embassy in Cairo. A favored and popular US diplomat, the ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, was killed along with three other Americans in an attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. And protesters in the capital of Yemen stormed the US Embassy compound there and burned the US flag.
Let me remind you, "I am the President" but I'll have more flexibility to attend to pesky issues after the election. Fast and Furious didn't work. We'll figure out some other way to go after that pesky, annoying 2nd Amdendment. Osama is dead and Govmint Motors is alive.
"I know that it's difficult sometimes seeing these disturbing images on television because our world is filled with serious challenges," Obama told supporters Thursday in Golden, Colo. "It is a tumultuous time that we're in. But we can and we will meet those challenges if we stay true to who we are, and if we would remind ourselves that we're different from other nations."
"Yes, it is a tumultuous time that we're in." I didn't have anything to do with that. I inherited all my problems from someone else.

Panetta Warns of War Between China and Japan Over Disputed Islands
This is not getting much attention
Exchanging warnings but avoiding confrontations thus far, Chinese and Japanese ships have come within less than half a nautical mile of each other in an ongoing dispute over the sovereignty of contested islands.

Amid deepening tensions in a long-running saga over the uninhabited islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned Sunday about the possibility of war between the two Asian countries.

“What we don't want is to have any kind of provocative behavior on the part of China or anybody else result in conflict,” he told reporters accompanying him on a trip that includes stops in Japan, China and New Zealand.

“My purpose will be to urge that they engage in the effort by the Asian nations to try to work out a format for resolving these issues,” he added, referring to a code of conduct developed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in a bid to manage unconnected territorial disputes between China and ASEAN members in the South China Sea.

Asked again about the concerns, Panetta said he was worried that “when these countries engage in provocations of one kind or another over these various islands, that it raises the possibility that a misjudgment on one side or the other could result in violence and could result in conflict, and that conflict would then, you know, have the potential of expanding.”

“We’re going to face more of this, countries are searching for resources,” he added. “There’s going to be questions raised as to who has jurisdiction over these areas. There has got to be a peaceful way to resolve these issues.”

Any conflict between Japan and China could risk drawing in the United States.

Although the U.S. position is that is does not take sides in the territorial dispute the Obama administration, like the Bush administration before it, has confirmed that the islands fall within the scope of article five of the 1960 U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security – an appraisal rejected by Beijing.

The treaty’s article five states: “Each Party recognizes that an armed attack against either Party in the territories under the administration of Japan would be dangerous to its own peace and safety and declares that it would act to meet the common danger in accordance with its constitutional provisions and processes.”

The Senkaku/Diaoyu islands, located about halfway between the Chinese mainland and Japan’s southernmost island of Okinawa, have been under disputed Japanese control since the late 19th century.

China is nowhere near needing that type of distraction and Japan is willing to go toe to toe at the moment. Resources can be negotiated and the Chinese and Japanese know this and will work it out quietly behind the scenes while the public faces scream and yell.

Actually, China badly needs a distraction from the coming economic meltdown. Plus there is an upcoming leadership change in the Party and some associated revisions to the constitution.

Couple that with the territorial issues that gromky mentions upstream, some historical animosities, China's sense of Manifest Destiny, and you have all the ingredients.

#13  Pragmatically, the PLAN may have acquired a number of new modern warships, but these are still mostly inferior to older ones of the JMSDF, let alone Japan's new AEGIS or Super-AEGIS-centric stuff.

Unless China resorts to using its Nukes, Analysts predict Japan will prevail in a major conventional war between the JSDF + PLA, although Japan will have a hard fight on its hands.

Perhaps more importantly, CHINA'S ULTIMATE INTENT IS NOTSOMUCH RE-C0NQUEST OF THE DIAOYUS ANDOR RYUKYUS [Okinawa archipelago] FROM NIPPON, BUT TO "FORCE OPEN" PERMAMENT + "UNCHALLENGED" PLA AIR-NAVAL STRATEGIC ACCESS FROM NE ASIA INTO WESTPAC, VEE OKINAWA-TAIWAN CORRIDOR = "DRAGON TRIANGLE".

IOW, NILBLOGS = In China's mind, any Sino-Japanese conventional war oer the disputed Diaoyus/Senkakus will also be a battle or war for control, dominance of Okinawa, Taiwan, Korean Peninsula, + northern PHIL.

IMO the JSDFS must be ready for at least a SINO-JAPANESE LIMITED NUCLEAR = LIMITED TACTICAL NUCLEAR WAR SCENARIO(S) vee China + PLA.

Either that, or Japan must renounce its sovereignty of the Diaoyus + prolly Okinawa to China.

Europe
Greece fears new Syrian migration wave
Greece must "fortify" itself against illegal immigration, fearing a new wave from conflict-torn Syria, the public order minister said on Monday as officials reported pressure on maritime borders.

"Measures were discussed... to fortify the Aegean Sea," Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias told reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras that also included the ministers of defence and shipping.

"A migration wave is starting to show, it has not yet reached Greece in large numbers, currently it is heading to Turkey, Jordan and Iraq, but the country must be ready," Dendias said.

More than 250,000 Syrians have fled to neighbouring countries to escape the 18-month violence that has killed more than 27,000 people according to activists.

Turkey currently hosts some 80,000 refugees in several camps in the southeast bordering Syria. But it has warned it can handle no more than 100,000 refugees.

Greece, battling a five-year recession and insolvency and already home to hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants and asylum seekers over the past decade, is also unable to cope with the strain.

Police reinforcements have been sent to Greece's northeastern border with Turkey, the main overland route used by migrant smugglers, but the flow appears to have switched to the Aegean Sea islands facing the Turkish mainland.

"I wake up every morning and say, 'Has anything happened to Syria today?'" the prime minister told the Washington Post over the weekend.

"If something happens in Syria, thousands of people would be flowing into Greece. Illegal immigrants are already a very big problem for us. We are already taking big steps to disallow illegal immigrants from coming in. Imagine if that number is multiplied by 10," Samaras said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
West's rebel worries leave Syria strategy struggling
France may be considering arming Syria's rebels but the U.S. and other Western powers have yet to find opposition figures they genuinely trust as they worry over growing jihadi and sectarian forces.

The attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya's Benghazi that killed its ambassador and anti-American demonstrations elsewhere this week over an obscure video that ridiculed the Prophet Mohammad might have no Syria links but will make nervous governments even more cautious.

Western officials say there is little doubt a growing number of foreign jihadi fighters are entering the fray, although it is far from clear whether any have direct links to Al Qaeda. But It is just one worry amongst many.

"This is not a situation where the U.S. can do much to shape what happens," says Mona Yacoubian, a former State Department official and now fellow and Syria expert at the Stimson Centre. "There has always been a lot of caution within the Obama Administration on Syria and if anything things are getting more complicated."

Working with Libya's initially notoriously disorganised rebels, officials complained, was hard enough; but the opposition to Syrian President Bashar al Assad seems even more diffuse.

That makes policy-making much more complicated and supplying weapons, or even choosing who to talk to, more of a gamble.

"We badly need to identify some political and military leaders who can make clear that they seek a political settlement to bring all fighting to an end," said one Western official on condition of anonymity. "Without that the blood letting reinforces the worst aspects of sectarianism and makes a soft landing ever less likely."

Iran: Saboteurs cut power lines to underground nuclear site
Explosives were used to cut power lines from city of Qom to Fordow underground uranium enrichment plant last month, Iranian nuclear chief claims; says "terrorists, saboteurs" have infiltrated UN nuclear watchdog.

Explosives were used to cut the electricity power lines to Iran's Fordow underground enrichment plant last month in an apparent attempt to sabotage Tehran's atomic advances, its nuclear energy chief said on Monday.

It was believed to be the first time Iran has mentioned the incident, which Iranian atomic energy organization chief Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani said took place on Aug. 17.

He also told the annual member state gathering of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that "the same act" had been carried out on power lines to Iran's main enrichment plant near the central town of Natanz, without giving a date.

Abbasi-Davani made clear his view that sabotage would not be successful in slowing Iran's nuclear program, which the West suspects is aimed at developing an atomic bomb capability but which Tehran says is purely peaceful.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Netanyahu: Iran will have 90% of enriched material for a bomb in six months
In which Bibi hits the American Sunday news talk shows.
[Times of Israel] Netanyahu: Obama and Romney 'equally committed' to stopping Iran.
He has to say that, though everyone paying attention knows it's not true.
'People are trying to draw me into the American election, and I'm not going to do that. We cherish the bipartisan support for Israel in the US'

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu renewed his call on Sunday for the United States to set "red lines" on Iran's nuclear program, and seemed to acknowledge differences between the Israeli and American assessments of the timetable for the development of an Iranian nuclear weapon.

The Iranian regime is "moving very rapidly to complete the enrichment of the [uranium] they need to complete a nuclear bomb," he told CNN's Candy Crowley on Sunday. "In six months or so they'll be 90 percent of the way there."

"They're in the red zone," Netanyahu told NBC's Meet the Press, "in the last 20 yards, and you can't let them cross that goal line, score a touchdown, because that would have unbelievable, grievous consequences for the peace of us all."

For that reason, he said, "I think it's important to place a red line before Iran."

Netanyahu added that he believed red lines would lessen the chance of a conflict in the region. "I think that actually reduces the chance of military conflict, because if [Iranian leaders] know there's a point, a stage, in the enrichment or other nuclear activities that they cannot cross -- because they'll face consequences -- I think actually they'll not cross it," he told CNN.

Netanyahu's message to millions of American viewers follows a week during which President Barack Obama
Ready to Rule from Day One...
, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as For a good time at 3 a.m. call Hillary and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another John Marshall ...
and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta
...current SecDef, previously Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Panetta served as President Bill Clinton's White House Chief of Staff from 1994 to 1997 and was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1977 to 1993....
all publicly disagreed with Netanyahu's call to set "red lines" for Iran's nuclear program.

The prime minister seemed to acknowledge disagreement with the B.O. regime Sunday, noting, "I know people value flexibility. I think that's important."

But, he argued, "at this late stage of the game, I think that Iran needs to see clarity. I'm not sure I would have said this three years ago, two years ago, one year ago, but as we get closer and closer to the end game, I think we have to establish that. That's becoming important."

When Crowley noted that Obama has already promised to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, Netanyahu replied that "implicit in that is that he'll stop them before they get a nuclear weapon, which means he'll draw a red line somewhere. I think it's important he communicate that to them."

Pressed on the apparent gap between the sense of urgency in the Israeli government and the American administration's stated willingness to wait for economic sanctions and other efforts to bear fruit, Netanyahu pinned the differences on the two countries' strategic calculations.

"You're a big country. You're several thousand miles away. You have a stronger military capability," he told CNN. "We're a smaller country. We're more vulnerable. They threaten our very annihilation. Obviously, we have different capabilities and different clocks.

"But," he added, in a reference to recent Iranian efforts to move their enrichment capabilities to underground bunkers, "the difference between our capabilities is becoming less important, because Iran is fast approaching a point where it could disappear from our capabilities of stopping them. 'Our capability' means not only Israel."

David Gregory, host of Meet the Press, pressed the prime minister about the election-season timing of his call for "red lines," and about Republican contender Willard Mitt Romney
...former governor of Massachussetts, currently the Publican nominee for president. He is the son of the former governor of Michigan, George Romney, who himself ran for president after saving American Motors from failure, though not permanently. Romney has a record as a successful businessman, heading Bain Capital, and he rescued the 2002 Winter Olympics from the midst of bribery and mismanagement scandals. More to the point, he isn't President B.O...
's assertion that Obama had "thrown allies like Israel under the bus."

Netanyahu declined repeatedly to comment on the elections or on differences between the candidates.

"What's guiding my statements is not the American political calendar, but the Iranian nuclear calendar," he told Gregory. "I have no doubt [Obama and Romney] are equally committed to preventing" an Iranian nuclear weapon. "It's a vital American interest."

He went further on CNN, noting that Israel enjoyed bipartisan support in the United States.

"People are trying to draw me into the American election, and I'm not going to do that. But I will say that we value, we cherish the bipartisan support for Israel in the United States, and we're supported by Democrats and Republicans alike. This is not an electoral issue. It is not based on any electoral consideration. I think that there's a common interest of all Americans of all political persuasions to stop Iran. This is a regime that is giving vent to the worst impulses that you see right now in the Middle East."

America's ambassador to the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
, Susan Rice, responded Sunday on CNN by saying there is "no daylight" between the US and Israel and saying Obama "will do what it takes" to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. But, she said, "we are not at that stage yet."

"Our bottom line -- if you want to call it a red line -- the president's bottom line has been that Iran will not acquire a nuclear weapon, and we will take no option off the table to ensure that it does not acquire a nuclear weapon, including military," Rice later said.

Olde Tyme Religion
Muslim violence round-up
Hundreds violently protest in Afghanistan, police use tear gas to disperse crowd in Indonesia, several thousand rally against anti-Islam film in Pakistain, crowd burns an American flag and an effigy of Obama
How many are rent-a-mobs, how many boys just having fun because they have no jobs anyway?
[Times of Israel] Hundreds of Afghans burned cars and threw rocks at a U.S. military base as a demonstration against an anti-Islam film that ridicules the Prophet Muhammad turned violent in the Afghan capital early Monday.

And in Jakarta, Indonesians angered over the film clashed with police outside the U.S. Embassy, hurling rocks and Molotov cocktails and burning tires outside the mission. At least one police officer was seen bleeding from the head and being carried to safety by fellow officers.

The U.S. Ambassador to Libya was killed during an attack on the consulate in Benghazi last week; protesters have also stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tunis and held violent demonstrations outside posts in Egypt and Sudan. The U.S. has responded by deploying additional military forces to increase security in certain hotspots.

In Kabul on Monday, the air was thick with smoke on Jalalabad road -- a main thoroughfare into the city center where the crowd burned shipping containers and tires. At least one police vehicle was burned by the mob before they finally dispersed around midday, according Daoud Amin, the deputy police chief for Kabul province.

Earlier in the morning, men lobbed rocks from the pavement and lobbed them at Camp Phoenix, a U.S. military base that lies along the road. More than 20 coppers were slightly injured -- all from being hit by rocks, said Gen. Fahim Qaim, the commander of a city quick-reaction police force.

"Death to America™!" and "Death to those people who have made a film and insulted our prophet," shouted the crowd. Police officers shot into the air to hold back about 800 people and prevent them from pushing toward government buildings downtown, said Azizullah, a police officer at the site who, like many Afghans, only goes by one name.

As the Jalalabad rally was broken up, demonstrations picked up elsewhere in the city. In the southeastern part of Kabul, about 50 protesters gathered in front of a mosque, shouting "Death to America™," said police officer Ahmad Shafiq but there were no signs of violence.

Protester Mohammad Humayun, 28, called on President Barack Obama
Ready to Rule from Day One...
to bring those who have insulted the prophet to justice.
And the director was indeed arrested. For parole violations or something entirely unrelated, but arrested he was nonetheless. Even if it really is protective custody, the optics are shameful.
"People around the world are angry," he added.
Skinless people in a sandpaper world.
"It is the responsibility of all Mohammedans to show reaction whenever they hear any disregard and disrespect."
Big difference between letters to the editor and dragging the body of the ambassador through the streets. Y'all are busily confirming every bad thing the world believes of you people.
Wahidullah Hotak, another protester, said the rallies will continue "until the people who made the film go to trial."
Destroy your country around you. As you can see, we won't stop you, but it is you that will have to live in the rubble afterward. Enjoy.
A number of Afghan religious leaders urged calm.

"Our responsibility is to show a peaceful reaction, to hold peaceful protests. Do not harm people, their property or public property," said Karimullah Saqib, a holy man in Kabul.
A lovely thought. But mobs are prone to violence as the sparks to fly upward.
Outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, people also tried to ignite a fire truck as Molotov cocktails went kaboom! against a fence surrounding the embassy compound. Police used a bullhorn to call for calm.

The demonstration started off peacefully as the group of several hundred protesters, many dressed in white, marched toward the mission. The U.S. Embassy has issued an emergency message to American citizens, saying about 1,000 people were expected to demonstrate in front of the mission with about 1,500 police on hand.

Demonstrations were also held Monday in the Indonesian cities of Medan and Bandung. Over the weekend in the central Java town of Solo, protesters stormed KFC and McDonald's restaurants, forcing customers to leave and management to close the stores.

In neighboring Pakistain, around 3,000 students and teachers rallied Monday against the film in the town of Chaman in southwestern Balochistan

How creative.
Teacher Abdul Malik said it was an obligation of all Mohammedans to protest the video, while Abdul Waris, a 12-year-old student who attended the rally, said his teachers told him the U.S. and Israel produced the film. The teachers canceled classes and told the students to go protest

#2  While I typically favor the pointing out of double standards on the Left and Right, virtually every example of right-wing suppression of free speech cited by GG is directly connected to the Obama administration in some way. Curious.

Regardless, GG misses the larger point, in my opinion. Free speech should be exactly that, free. However, the fundamental question not being asked here is this: When does tolerating the intolerant become intolerable? At what point do you have to take someone at their word and take the necessary steps to protect yourself?

Arabia
Strategy Page: Al Qaeda in Yemen Fleeing UAVs For Safety In Syria
Key graphs:
The U.S. believes, based on intercepted communications, interrogations of captured cut-throats and reports from informants on the ground that al Qaeda is sending more and more of its personnel to Syria. There, it is safer (no American UAVs and missile attacks) and the cut-throats expect the Assad dictatorship to fall and the new government to reward al Qaeda (who are doing a lot of the fighting) to be given a sanctuary in Syria. That has happened before but usually did not last as some Islamic terror groups could not help attacking the secular Assad government. A post-Assad government will be no different in the eyes of some hard-core al Qaeda men. Getting out of Yemen isn't easy for known al Qaeda members (who need false documents and such), and even those who can easily pass as just another Yemeni need money and coordination with al Qaeda groups in Syria. So not as many al Qaeda men can travel to Syria as quickly as they would like.

The American UAV campaign has been a huge success, killing dozens of key al Qaeda personnel and many lower ranking terrorists. In the last two weeks at least three dozen al Qaeda have been killed by these attacks and so far this year about 200 have died. Many more al Qaeda have been killed or captured by the army in the south, which is out there daily looking for groups of al Qaeda trying to hide while planning more terror attacks and an eventual comeback.

French Jewry alerted to watch out for 'fake Jews'
Local security services say terror groups may try to conduct reconnaissance and gain access to community buildings

JTA -- The security service of La Belle France's Jewish communities has alerted French Jews to "individuals pretending to be Jewish to gain access to community facilities."

In a statement released Sept. 14, the Service de Protection de la Communauté Juive, or SPCJ, also declared a state of elevated alertness during the High Holidays.

"This year we have noticed in La Belle France various suspected cases of intelligence gathering on Jewish targets," the communiqué read.

"The new [Jewish] year will be celebrated at a time when the threat from terrorist attacks is particularly high," it added. SPCJ requested French Jews exercise vigilance at synagogue, at Jewish schools and at community gatherings.

On March 19, an Islamist turban killed three children and a rabbi at Otzar Hatorah school in Toulouse
...lies on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Toulouse metropolitan area is the fourth-largest in La Belle France...
. SPCJ documented more than 90 anti-Semitic incidents in the 10 days that followed the shooting.

In its announcement, SPCJ also referenced the July 18 terrorist attack in Bulgaria.

The perpetrator killed himself and six other people -- five of whom were Israelis -- in a pre-planned attack at Burgas airport. Israel said Hezbollah was behind the attack.

#3  the National Socialists

This is one of my pet peeves lately. Everyone "knows" the commies are left-wing and the Nazis are right-wing. (we learned it in school!). Yeah, maybe compared to each other, but the name Nazi came from National Socialist German Workers' Party. They were into national socialism (duh!) vs the commie's international socialism. Nazis, commies, call it what you want, but it's still socialism and still a left-wing ideology.

#5  "I, on the other hand, have been striving for twenty years with a minimum of intervention and without destroying our production, to arrive at a new Socialist order in Germany which not only eliminates unemployment but also permits the worker to receive an ever greater share of the fruits of his labor.

The success of this policy of economic and social reconstruction of our people, which by systematically eliminating differences of rank and class, has a true peoples' community as the final aim of the world."
-- Adolf Hitler

Living in the grinding poverty of the Vienna slums, Hitler soon realized that a wholesome national pride could not be aroused in men who lacked the necessities of life. Hence his interest in social betterment, which ultimately brought the word 'Socialist' into the name of his party. Like William Morris, he turned to Socialism as a necessary preliminary to the dissemination of his great idea. Morris became a Socialist, bent on improving the living conditions of the English masses, in order to make them listen to his artistic gospel. Hitler became a Socialist (in his sense of the word) so that the German masses would listen to his gospel of nationalism.
-- Nicolas Fairweather, The Atlantic, March 1932

"We have backed the wrong horse in Spain. We would have done better to back the Republicans. They represent the people. We could always have converted these socialists into good National Socialists later. The people around Franco are all reactionary clerics, aristocrats, and moneybags – they've nothing in common with us Nazis at all!"
-- Adolf Hitler, April 1938

Pakistan tests nuclear-capable missile
Pakistan on Monday conducted a successful test fire of the indigenously developed multi tube Cruise Missile Hatf-VII (Babur), having a range of 700 kilometers.

Babur Crusie Missile is a low flying, terrain hugging missile, which can strike targets both at Land and Sea with pin point accuracy. It carries stealth features. Equipped with modern cruise missile technology of Terrain Contour Matching (TERCOM) and Digital Scene Matching and Area Co-relation (DSMAC), it can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads.

The missile was launched from a state of the art Multi Tube Missile Launch Vehicle (MLV), which significantly enhances the targeting and deployment options of Babur Weapon system.

The test was witnessed by Director General Strategic Plans Division Lieutenant General (R) Khalid Ahmed Kidwai, Chairman National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM) Mr. Muhammad Irfan Burney, senior officers from the armed forces and strategic organizations.

In today’s test National Command Authority’s fully automated Strategic Command and Control Support System (SCCSS) was once again employed. It enables robust Command and Control capability of all strategic assets with round the clock situational awareness in a digitized network centric environment to decision makers at National Command Centre (NCC). The system has the added capability of real time remote monitoring of missile flight path. The test consolidates and strengthens Pakistan’s deterrence capability and National security.

Egypt's Morsi defiantly receives Sudan's Al-Bashir in Cairo
[Al Ahram] Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi on Sunday received Sudanese counterpart Omar Al-Bashir at the Presidential Palace in Cairo's Heliopolis district, where they agreed to inaugurate an Egypt-Sudan highway and the Sudanese branch of Egypt's National Bank by the end of this week.

The Sudanese leader arrived at Cairo International Airport on Sunday afternoon, where he was welcomed by Egyptian Vice-President Mahmoud Mekki.

According to presidential front man Yasser Ali, the two heads of state agreed at the meeting that the Sudanese branch of the Egyptian National Bank, as well as an Egypt-Sudan highway, would be opened on Thursday during an upcoming visit by Prime Minister Hisham Qandil to Khartoum scheduled for 19 and 20 September.

Amnesia Amnesty International has called on Egypt to withdraw its invitation to Al-Bashir or arrest him when he arrives, in accordance with an arrest warrant issued against the latter by the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
in The Hague for his alleged role in crimes against humanity in Sudan's turbulent western Darfur region.

Ali also noted that the Organisation of the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
was still revising the arrest warrant and that Egypt was committed to its final resolution.

Al-Bashir took power in 1989 backed by the Sudanese branch of the Moslem Brüderbund.

Boy killed, eight injured in explosion
[Dawn] A 12-year-old boy was killed and eight others, including a four-year-old girl, were maimed in a powerful kaboom inside a shop in Nazimabad's Bara Board area on Saturday, police said.

The blast also damaged a nearby parked rickshaw and a neighbouring shop, the police said.

They added that the bomb disposal unit of the Sindh police found that the victim boy, Muhammad Babar, who worked at the Waheed Kabari House, had carelessly blended several chemicals and acids in a drum, which caused the kaboom.

The boy was struck down in his prime and other injured were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.

An official at the Pak Colony cop shoppe said that the boy poured various chemicals that included hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, sulfuric acid, caustic soda in a 20-litre drum and started blending them.

He said that some witnesses noticed sparks before the kaboom.

He said the scrap shop was badly damaged in the blast that also affected the parked rickshaw and its neighbouring tea shop.

The shop owner was among the injured and he was being questioned for selling chemicals without due safety measures in place, he added.

"Among the injured there is four-year-old girl who was playing with other children near the shop. The injured are said to be out of danger," said the police official.

Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.

Though the ICU Vice Chancellor Ajmal Khan's appeal for release still remained unheard, as the government seemed unwilling to meet Taliban's demands in return for his freedom, Mohibullah, the TTP front man Ihsanulla Ihsan said had been released in exchange for Taliban prisoners.

Speaking to Dawn.com after his release in Peshawar Mohibullah said; "I don't know about their demands and the reason why I had been set free but I am really happy to be back home and pray for the professor's early release."

To a query if they were kept in Wazoo by the Taliban he said: "I don't know where they were keeping us, we were moved from one dark room to another, blindfolded so its really difficult to tell the exact place but I can say for sure it was a really cold place, the weather was very cold even in the month of June and July and it was very chilly a few days back."

"No we were never forced to do anything, we were on our own, nothing unusual but yes the armed Taliban did keep us under watch," he replied, when asked if they were ever tortured in captivity.

"Ajmal sahib is alright, we had been together all the time in captivity. I was separated from him three days back and on Saturday they put me on a vehicle and in the evening I was freed near Scheme Chowk on Kohat Road from where I called my brother and now I am home," he said while narrating his journey to freedom.

#3  It reads as a chilling examination of how war changes man

No, no and no. When their comanders make them clear that some actions will make soldiers shot, when they know their comrades will loath their actions and report or even frag them then there will be few atrocities.

But when, like the Wehrmacht in Russia, high command implicitly allows rape of women, murder of civilians or prisoners, when the soldier has been told he is a an ûbermensch who can do what pleases him to untemenschen, when he nows hos comrades share these thesis and will support him then you have what the Wehrmacht (all of it not only the SS) did in Russia

And if you want to know why the Russians after massively surrendering in 1941, fought like devils at Stalingrad despite a life expectancy of mere hours it is because they had seen first hand what the Germans had done and because they were being told of articles in the German press telling of future market slaves where robust Russains would be sold for agricultural work and the prettiest girls would be sold to Hamburg's brothels. These articles were not fakes manufactured by Red Army's political comissars, they were authentic and published in publicaklly sold newspapers. When such papers are sold without scandal then don't wonder about war crimes since an Army is the mirror of the country who fields it.

About the massive rapes perpetrated by the Red Army in Germany it was not merely vengeance: "Krasnaia Sviezda" the Red Army's journal was running articles inviting soldiers to "break the racial pride of the German woman". Again it was no accident and again it was not "war changes man". It is some armies who change man, not war

(1) Former soldier Heinrich Boll, writes in "Portrait of a group with Dame", about a column of Soviet POWs marched without food and water, a five years old girl is sent by her parents tries to bring them some. No warnings, no tries to restrain her, no attempts to frighten her, no nothing: Bang, Bang, Bang. Five years old dead.

#4  My mother-in-law is a survivor of the holocaust. She lived in Poland. Her father and mother and four of her siblings were murdered. The children who were murdered were but children--not even teens. Similarly for my father-in-law, he lost his mother and father and others in his family. They were shuttled around to various concentration camps during the war until they were liberated by American soldiers. She still keeps in touch with one of these soldiers and feels a deep debt of gratitude to the Americans.

My background is Catholic and Irish and I never had much knowledge of the holocaust except through newsreels as a kid. However, I can remember being shocked as a kid upon seeing newsreels of showing bodies of people in concentration camps stacked like so much cord wood while others ended up as ashes in huge ovens.

I wouldn't expect much better from the islamists than the Nazis.

#5  You should Google the English translation of the speech Hitler made to the German nation when he declared war on America publicly 12/11/1941, even though he declared war on America privately on 9/11 of that year.

He lied through his teeth almost as bad as Obama lies now. Only Hitler was, at that time, 8 years after being in power, much more militant in his speeches than Obama is at the moment.

Update and Analysis of Alps Murders - Rantburg Exclusive
by Raider

This is an in-depth analysis on Rantburg.com.

The following analysis looks in more detail at the unusual series of murders that took place in the French Alps on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sep 5 (2012). As a few more details have trickled out about the killings, it is possible to start to piece together the "tactical jigsaw puzzle".

----------------
OVERVIEW: The crime occurred on a remote mountain road near the town of Chevaline in the French Alps. The murder scene was in a parking lot off a road ... the road itself is a dead-end street that leads to an overlook. Four adults were killed, one 7-year old girl was seriously injured, and one 4-year old girl was unhurt (but traumatized).

Three of the dead adult victims were discovered inside a red BMW station wagon. Killed inside the BMW were: Saad al-Hilli (50) a British citizen originally from Iraq, his wife Iqbal (47) who was a dentist from Iraq, and his wife's mother who was a Swedish citizen.

Al-Hilli's station wagon was parked at the back of a quiet parking lot, surrounded mostly by trees. All three adults had been shot at least 3 times, including two shots to the head for each victim. The victims were shot with a low-caliber pistol, probably a 32-cal or a 7.65 mm. That would imply that the murder weapon was probably a Walther-PP series handgun or a Tokarev. Quite possibly a silencer was used on this gun, since no people nearby reported any loud noises.

Al-Hilli was in the drivers seat (dead). The two adult women were in the back seat (dead) and they apprently threw themselves over al-Hilli's 4-year old daughter Zeena who was still alive. The women did such a good job at concealing the young girl that she remained terrified - but undiscovered - for many hours after the crime was committed.

Also involved in the attack was al-Hilli's older daughter Zainab (7) who was badly injured but not killed, and a cyclist who was shot dead. Zainab was found outside the family vehicle. She was shot once in the shoulder, then pistol whipped hard on the head - she collapsed on the asphalt in the parking lot. The cyclist was Sylvain Molliere (45) from Grenoble, France. Grenoble is about 25 miles from the crime scene. Molliere was a rider in a bicycle race taking place in the area. He was shot 5 times, then collapsed to the pavement. His body and his bicycle were nearby the vehicle.

The crime scene was discovered by another British cyclist and reported to the police. The police found many shell casings from 32-cal ammunition near the BMW. The engine was still running, and the rear wheels were still spinning in the dirt when the British cyclist arrived (he turned off the ignition).

Interviews with people in the area established that three suspicious vehicles had been seen recently: a white Peugeot driven by a man in a dark shirt which was seen speeding down the road away from the murder, a green 4x4 vehicle, and a motorcycle.

COMMENTS: A variety of early theories emerged about this killing, including the possibility that it was a mafia hit, or a murder by an upset relative, or the work of robbers, or a strange case of espionage. However, police were puzzled as to why professional killers would leave shell casings at the scene - and not pick them up. In addition, no-one could explain why the daughters were not killed by the hit men. And finally, if this murder was associated with a clandestine meeting - why on earth did al-Hilli take his family to the rendezvous point? As deeper details were uncovered about the backgrounds of the people involved in the Alps incident - the plot became much more complicated.

AL-HILLI was a mechanical engineer working for an aerospace company in Britain that did secret satellite work. The company produces satellite imagery for high-profile customers and various foreign governments. Al-Hilli and his wife lived in an expensive home, but his income may not be fully adequate to meet all his expenses. He had some private ventures going - but they showed low profits on the books. It has been reported that al-Hilli's bank accounts show large deposits that seem inconsistent with his normal work and projects. Al-Hilli was also known as an outspoken critic of Israeli policies and frequently voiced strong opinions on internet chat rooms.

SYLVAIN MOLLIERE, the cyclist, also worked with confidential information. It has been reported that Mr Molliere was a metallurgist who specialized with nuclear technology. He had a deep understanding of the alloys and coatings needed to produce fuel rods in nuclear reactors.

There appears to be no known relationship between al-Hilli and Molliere ... at least none that police have identified or made public at this time. The unusual backgrounds of these two individuals lead to two possible scenarios about the Alps murders - which I will elaborate. Leading scenarios revolve around espionage and the leaking of hi-tech secrets. The main difference between the two scenarios is simply ... which man was the primary target in this murder??

------------

SCENARIO A: Under this scenario, al-Hilli was the primary target of the hit men and the cyclist Molliere was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time (although as it turns out, Molliere acted bravely). Since al-Hilli worked with secret satellite imagery, it is plausible that he may have used this access to sell information on the black market. Information is a commodity like everything else ... and it is most valuable when it is in high demand. Since the countries of Iran and Israel are currently locked in a military struggle, al-Hilli may have been selling sensitive information to the Iranians. The relationship is plausible because al-Hilli was a Shiite Muslim, and was strongly opposed to Israeli policies. Therefore he could have been approachable by Iranian agents. This kind of deal would be lucrative to al-Hilli, but if he was offered high-resolution satellite photographs of Israeli installations then this would put him at the top of "persona non grata" for Mossad. This is one speculation about motive. But it is also possible that al-Hilli was killed by an Iranian hit squad who feared that he would compromise their on-going espionage relationship. Finally, it is conceivable, though less likely, that al-Hilli was killed by some other competitor/customer in the information business, since satellite imagery can be very valuable for certain commercial activities.

Scenario A: al-Hilli was probably under surveillance from the time he entered France. The hit men no doubt knew his itinerary, and the Alps would make a good place for a quiet kill. It is possible they looked for opportunities to kill al-Hilli as an individual (without his family), but could never get him separated from his family. So the decision was made to kill al-Hilli as a high-value target, and to kill all the adults to eliminate witnesses. On the day of the murder, it may have gone something like this. Al-Hilli decided to take a quiet drive with his family into the mountains. However, he was being shadowed by agents using a motorcycle and a 4x4 vehicle. During the drive al-Hilli's older daughter needed to make a restroom stop. So al-Hilli pulled off the road to let the child go and relieve herself. The hit men who were trailing al-Hilli recognized this location as an excellent kill zone. They needed only a motorcycle and a larger vehicle to do the job - the large vehicle would pin al-Hilli's car into the parking lot and the assassin on the motorcycle would kill the driver and passengers. Al-Hilli saw the danger coming at the last moment and attempted to reverse - but the BMW's rear wheels became stuck in a soft dirt embankment. The motorcycle rider began shooting the adults in a very calm and professional way (through the side windows, close range), starting with al-Hilli. Meanwhile the driver of the 4x4 vehicle had to get out of his car and chase down Zainab ... al-Hilli's older daughter. In the pursuit he fired his gun but only shot her in the shoulder. Then he pistol whipped her to the ground. Quite possibly Zainab would have been killed at this point, but by sheer coincidence the cyclist Molliere was passing by and noticed the girl was under attack. He rode in to help and was shot repeatedly. The hit men could not risk the possibility that the cyclist might call the police, who would then seal off their escape routes. The actions of Molliere might truly have saved the life of the oldest daughter - who would otherwise have been shot. After this, the hit men finished killing the adults. However, their concentration had been rattled by the the older daughter being outside the vehicle and the arrival of the cyclist. In addition (see later comments), it is possible that a third witness saw the killing and drove away. Hence the hit men fled the scene quickly before anyone else could see them. The 4-year old daughter posed minimal risk since she had seen nothing, and the older daughter may have appeared to be almost dead at that stage. It is a quick hop for the hit men to cross back into Switzerland - that is a viable escape route with false passports.

Special Comment: The white Peugeot. This vehicle was seen driving quickly away from the scene. There are several possibilities. One idea is that the white Peugeot was acting as a surveillance vehicle that was tracking al-Hilli as he drove through France. Certainly possible, since the assault vehicles (green 4x4, motorcycle) were too readily identifiable. The second idea is that the Peugeot was driven by a tourist who had just happened to visit the lookout at the end of the road where the murder took place. The tourist was returning and noticed the entire murder scene unfolding. He then panicked and floored the accelerator of his car to escape. If the latter possibility exists, then there is an additional (frightened) witness who saw the murder scene. This would also explain why the hit men fled the parking lot and never retrieved the spent bullet casings.

-------------

SCENARIO B: Under this scenario Molliere was the primary target of the hit men, and al-Hilli's family was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. Molliere had technical knowledge that would certainly be valuable to the Iranians - particularly as they are trying to develop their own nuclear reactors (producing plutonium as well as electrical power). The exchange of information would be lucrative to Molliere, but would require meetings with Iranian agents. Israel has acted proactively to remove highly-placed technical personnel within the Iranian regime who are accelerating the country's nuclear progress. But could this rationale be extended to a citizen of another country ... it is a big leap - but maybe if the knowledge from Molliere was critical to Iran's progress.

Under Scenario B, Molliere was under surveillance and the bicycle race provided a quiet spot in the Alps to make the kill. On the day of the murder, it may have gone something like this. Molliere was being trailed by a motorcycle and a larger vehicle. At some point the motorcycle pulled alongside him and several shots were fired. Due to the low-caliber bullets, he had a few moments of life left in his body. By chance he happened to be near a pull-out, and Molliere raced his bicycle into the parking lot. Being in a panic, he noticed a car parked in the pull-out and tried to get their assistance. However, he collapsed on the ground and died before anyone could do anything. The disturbance of the cyclist aroused the attention of al-Hilli's older daughter, who jumped out of the car and tried to help. At this moment the hit men doubled back from the road - they had seen Molliere go to the BMW parked there. They were forced to eliminate all the witnesses. The motorcycle rider fired repeated shots into the BMW to kill the adults - and was not even aware of the 4-year old in the back seat (covered by the women). The driver of the other 4x4 vehicle got out, put more bullets into Molliere to ensure a certain kill, then shot Zainab - but only hit her shoulder. He then pistol whipped her very hard. And at that point the hit men rushed out of the kill zone and went into their exit strategy. As mentioned before. there is some possibility that a white Peugeot passed by while this action was taking place - causing the hit men to leave in a great hurry.

-------------

It appears that French police believe that Scenario A is closer to the truth - since they have passed the momentum of the investigation over to British police. It is not clear if the UK authorities have embraced this option fully. Further background investigations may help to clarify which scenario is more plausible.

The actions of the hit men may be described in the following terms: bold, coldly logical, brutal, very lethal. These terms paint a certain "character" to the tactical execution of the job - which may also suggest which agency was involved in the killings. At this stage the investigation is still ongoing ... but progress may be slow as the trail goes cold. If professional agents were involved, the trail will go cold quickly.

#1  Thanks Raider!

The fact Saad al-Hill worked for an "aerospace company in Britain that did secret satellite work", along with Steve White's post this morning "Iran Starts Work on Advanced Radar" is all very interesting. Yes, seperate disciplines, but they share some common technological links.

#5  Or Al-Hilli was meeting with the cyclist, unknown to his tracker, who didn't have enough ammo for the extra hit. The girl was pistol-whipped, being of low priority after the adults were taken care of and the possibility of another eyewitness kept him from cleaning up the casings. A shoulder hit by a professional who would also have known that Al Hilli had 2 daughters may imply a glimmer of conscience, leaving the innocent to live another day. Mossad?

#6  Shooter(s) not knowing how many were in the Saad al-Hilli party (hidden child not discovered), may indicate the targets were not surveilled or followed from their point of departure. If this was the case, the al-Hilli travel itinerary and destination may have been known in advance.

Monday is the one year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, and organizers have a big day of demonstrations and marches and swarms planned.

You can download the full plans for tomorrow here, but the following two pages give you the gist of what's going to go down. For those working in the Financial District, best to plan accordingly.

#5  According to the Washington Examiner, there were more than 100 Occupy Wall Street arrests in NYC.

Occupy Wall Street protesters celebrated the movement's anniversary on Monday by clogging intersections in the city's financial district, marching to the beat of drums that were a familiar refrain last year.

Protesters roamed around the lower Manhattan financial district all morning in groups of a few dozen each, from one intersection to another and back again, chanting loudly about the ills of Wall Street. In total, there were a few hundred protesters scattered throughout the city. More than 100 of them were arrested by midafternoon, mostly on disorderly conduct charges.

Canada shuts embassies in Cairo, Tripoli, Khartoum
[Al Ahram] "We take the safety of our personnel and our missions overseas very seriously," Foreign Ministry official Rick Roth told AFP.

He said Canadian authorities were monitoring events closely and taking appropriate security measures, but refused to give details on the latter.

Canada's decision to close its embassies in the capitals of Egypt, Libya and Sudan came a day after the United States withdrew all non-essential personnel from Sudan and Tunisia in response to the wave of angry protests sweeping much of the Middle East over a US-made film that lampoons the Prophet Mohammed.

Dearborn Imam Demands Government Enforcement of Sharia Censorship
H/T JihadWatch
As anger flared across the Muslim world Friday over an anti-Islam video from the U.S., the religious leader of Michigan's largest mosque slammed Islamic extremists for attacking U.S. embassies and urged Muslims not to react violently to attacks on their prophet.

And he urged the U.S. to do more to stop the people behind the video and those who are promoting it.

"Somehow, they should be stopped," said Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn. "The U.S. response should be much more stronger than verbal condemnation."
I.e. free speech should be suppressed forcefully.
"This is not what Islam preaches," Al-Qazwini said of the fatal attacks. "There is no way we can tolerate killing."

At the same time, he said we can't "sit and watch" as the anti-Islam video is promoted.
"Silence, I kill you!"
"We can do more to stop inciting violence," he said. Allowing the movie has "broader ramifications for our troops, diplomats and Americans abroad."
One could interpret this as a threat...
The filmmaker and those who support the movie, such as Quran-burning Pastor Terry Jones of Florida, "have blood on their hands," he said.
So the government should neutralize these criminals.
Speaking during Friday prayers -- the most popular gathering time of the week for Muslims -- Al-Qazwini said he was dismayed to see Islamic extremists take down the U.S. flag at an embassy and replace it with an Al-Qaida flag.

"Al-Qaida is the last organization that speaks for Muslims," Al-Qazwini said.
I actually believe he was dismayed. He's an islamofascist of the Shi'ite persuasion.
Al-Qazwini told the congregation that Muslims "should not be quiet" when their prophet is attacked.
Infidels however are to be seen, not heard.
But "we cannot be violent" in responding, he said.
If the government enforces their will they don't have to be violent.

This is not just a random crackpot. Even though he's strongly linked to the Iranian theocracy (studied in Qom 1980-1992) he's politically connected. On October 1, 2003 he delivered the opening prayer for the 108th Congress. This guy is mainstream US Islam.

#4  Here's a link to the original Detroit Free Press article re the Imam's remarks.
Sorry for the omission!

Note the the headline "Dearborn imam: Violence not what Islam preaches". Apparently the reporters didn't not comprehend at all what this guy was actually saying.

Any diligent reporter would have asked his Enormity about the exact definition of a "much more stronger response" and how exactly those with "blood on their hands" "should be stopped."

Here's a religious leader connected to Iran's theocracy and the US political establishment, apparently openly calling for the overthrow of the constitutional system.

As much as e.g. Terry Jones is an unfashionable bitter clinger on the fringe, Al-Qazwini is mainstream.

This should be a BFD.

Apparently he was studying in Qom while Americans were held hostage.

MILF rejects attacks on US over Islam film
The Phillipines’ largest Moro terrorist insurgent group yesterday rejected al Qaeda calls to attack US targets supposedly over an anti-Islamic film that has caused protests worldwide.

The MILF’s chief political officer Ghazali Jaafar said that they have told its 12,000 members to observe a ceasefire pact with the government, and not to attack US targets in the country. Jaafar said, "We do not live in the dark ages, there are rules and laws that need to be followed. We have an existing ceasefire with the Philippines, and we will not violate that."

He called the killing of the US ambassador to Libya and three other Americans in Benghazi a "senseless act of violence."

"Even in war, there are international norms that need to be accepted, including the protection of diplomats and embassies," he said, while condemning those behind the amateur film.

Jaafar said the MILF would monitor other Moro groups adding, "We will inform government negotiators of any impending terror attacks."

Saudi shuts male-staffed lingerie shops
[Al Ahram] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
's labour ministry has ordered the closure of around 100 lingerie shops in the capital for having men on their sales staff, a newspaper said on Sunday.

Al-Eqtisadiah quoted a ministry official as saying all shops in Riyadh which violate a decree on the "feminisation and nationalisation of jobs" would be shut down. The measure aims to "provide a safe environment for working women," he said.

The ministry at the start of the year banned male assistants from working at lingerie shops, as a first step to be followed by women-only sales assistants at cosmetics outlets.

King Abdullah issued a decree in June 2011 limiting work for females at lingerie shops to Saudi women only in a bid to reduce high female unemployment in the conservative kingdom.

Unemployment among women in the oil-rich state is estimated at 30 per cent.

Six killed in Dagestan clash
Five terrorists militants and one police officer were killed in fighting in Dagestan on Saturday. Security forces exchanged fire with terrorists militants they discovered in the basement of a kindergarten in a village near Russia's border with Georgia. One police officer was killed and three others were injured in the clash with the terrorists militants, four of whom it said were wanted for killings in the area over the past two years.

Most of the fighting took place after the terrorists gunmen took refuge in a home in the village of Khutrakh.

The Last 14 Days Will Go Down As A Turning Point In The History Of Economics
Whew. Those were a crazy couple of weeks we just wrapped up.

Morgan Stanley's interest rate strategist Matthew Hornbach writes:

When the history books are written or market participants look at charts three months from now, the past two weeks may go down as the most important of 2012 -- aside from how the US government handles the fiscal cliff (which may not occur this year anyway). The ECB introduction of the Outright Monetary Transactions (OMT), China's approval of construction projects to spur growth, the German Constitutional Court decision that paved the way for Germany to ratify the ESM and fiscal compact, and the Fed's decision to introduce an open ended purchase program -- which may one day include Treasuries -- represent a bazooka blast of monetary and, to a much lesser extent, fiscal policy support.

#2  The piece says the story is developing; however, recent history would indicate this is a mob in a frenzy with thoughts of Allen and murder on their minds. Fallujah bridge, Mogadishu (dragging and abusing the corpses of our guys), Lara Logan, our own troops caught in remote outpost attacks come to mind also. There's a pattern of violence, torture, and abuse of the alive as well as the dead by our enemy.

We have not really gone primitive on the jihadists and released our dogs of war. We do have that in us. Well, maybe the second battle of Fallujah did get serious--something like 50-60% of the buildings in Fallajuh were leveled often with terrorists in them. Probably should have leveled them all with carpet bombing first and then mopped up whatever was left over--if there was anything.

I'm listening to our idiot Ambassador Susan Rice who is pitching the administration line that it was the movie that caused the murder of Stevens. As long as we have idiots like this and the people who appointed her and a complicit press, we won't do anything until someone loses a city to the religion of death.

The Japanese took few prisoners--they viewed surrender as dishonor. They often beat to death or beheaded prisoners on death marches. Our Marines took the lesson seriously. They burned and blew them out of their caves and they took no prisoners.

We are still playing nice and make friends. Woe is the day for the islamists (or whatever the PC term of the day is) when we lose our patience and decide to do differently.

Something doesn't make sense here. Why the repeated and vehemant claims that this (and the other attacks) were spontaneous mob reactions to the movie when they OBVIOUSLY were not? I feel like there must be some underlying motive for the storytelling, that it cannot just be knee-jerk lying (well, I guess it could be but ...) - could there be some kind of diplo-BS going on in order to try to protect the less extreme (MB) elements from their even more wacko flanks?

The problem is we've been meddling in these countries for decades and before us it was the British and the French. It was all about oil, of course and they sure didn't mind taking our money. But now it's time we develop our own resources or else learn to do with less. Then we can get the hell out of all of the Arab countries and leave them to their own devices. If we don't have embassies in their countries we won't have any more scenes like this one in Benghazi. If they still wanna sell us their oil, fine. If they don't let them eat it. No more foreign aid. Iran’s Shahed 129 UAV capable to fire missile
Chief Commander of the Iranian Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (IRGC) Mohammad Ali Jafari said during a press conference in Tehran that Iran's new-manufactured Shahed 129 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is capable to be equipped and fire missles, Fars News Agency reported on Sunday.

"Shahed 129 can fly 24 hours permanently and has reconnaissance and fight capabilities," he said, adding with launching new missile on this UAV, firing on that long distant targets is possible.

Earlier, deputy of Iran's defense minister said Iran is equipping its unmanned aerial vehicle Karrar with missiles, Fars News Agency reported on Sep.2. Mohmahhad Eslami said that the flight radious of Iranian homemade Karrar drone is 1000 km.

Iranian official's statement about plans for equiping the UAVs with bomb and missile came while official Tehran announced the production of two homemade UAVs with bombing and reconnaissance capabilities in February 2011.

Iran Commander Warns Israel, US Against Attack
The top commander in Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard warned Sunday that his country's missiles will ensure "nothing will remain" of Israel if it takes military action against Tehran over its controversial nuclear program.

Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari also warned that Iran might close the Straits of Hormuz if it is attacked, withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and hit U.S. bases in the Middle East.

Such warnings and references to Israel's destruction have been made before by Iranian officials. But Gen. Jafari's comments to a Tehran news conference were an unusually detailed, strongly worded and comprehensive listing of the means that Iran says it has to retaliate against a strike on its nuclear facilities.

The U.S. and Israel have left open the possibility of such a strike if Iran does not back down from what they say are a push to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

"Our response to Israel is clear: I think nothing will remain of Israel (should it attack Iran). Given Israel's small land area and its vulnerability to a massive volume of Iran's missiles, I don't think any spot in Israel will remain safe," he said.

Christiane Amanpour: West Is Extreme, Not Islamists
Amanpour blasted:

... clearly the film showed him (Mohammad) as a womanizer, a pedophile, a thug, and generally denigrated Islam.
....er huh, we're waiting. Truth or fiction, which is it?
Now, there is, obviously, freedom of expression in this country. There is also 100-year law by the United States Supreme Court which says you can't cry fire in a crowded theater.
Lawyers? Mooslin Lawyers. Call some quickly will you!!
So, now, one has to, really, try to figure out the extremists in this country and the extremists out there who are using this and whipping up hatred.
I think I've figured it out and it is YOU!
The extremists out there using this film are the jihadis, the Islamicists and most importantly their controllers in the mosques and quiet country houses. They're the ones whipping up the rubes. Now then, Christiane, we can either violate our own principles and silence our own citizens, or we can deal with the very clever Islamicists who are whipping up the war against the West. I think I know which side of that argument you're on...

#14  Seems that the original script had nothing to do with islam or mo. The version that was later dubbed had some to do with Mo (and consequently islam). It appears the actors were duped as to what the film was about. Some Egyptian guy edited the original version. It is not entirely clear what his religious beliefs are or even his name as he has a number of aliases. He is being looked into as a federal parole violator. The trailer appears to be something some kid would put together with a video camera--very amateurish and frankly cheesy. If the muslims are bent out of shape about something like this, they better take a look at their religion and their attitudes. IMO the video has been around for awhile, the uprisings have been planned for sometime and the video was used to stir up the rent-a-crowds as cover. Susan Rice, and the administration are also looking for a meme to explain a failed to non-existent foreign policy regarding the Mideast other than selling out Israel for the Paleos and muslims, appeasement of the muslims, and continuation of the muslim apology tour. Couple all this with announcement of departure dates in Iraq and Afghanistan and your have a disaster upon us here and Israel in the Mideast. A real example of a Washington made man-made-disaster.

Arabia
Call for burning US embassies, killing US ambassadors & operations in the West.
On 15 Sep. 2012, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) issued a written statement calling for the burning of US embassies and the killing of US ambassadors and envoys. The statement said, "the incident is a major one when the various efforts should collaborate in order to aim to expel the embassies of the United States from Muslim countries, to continue the demonstrations and protests as happened in some Muslim countries, and to set fire to these embassies as our zealous people did in Egypt and Yemen. Whoever, from among our Muslim brothers, captures US ambassadors or envoys, he may follow in the footsteps of the grandsons of Umar al-Mukhtar in Libya who set the best example by killing the US ambassador, may God reward them for their adherence to Islam. The step of expelling the embassies and consulates is a step toward liberating Muslim lands from US hegemony and arrogance."
No mention made of "spontaneity" or of evil films, but note the instruction "capture US ambassadors".

Science & Technology
Japan tooth patch could be end of decay
[France 24] Scientists in Japan have created a microscopically thin film that can coat individual teeth to prevent decay or to make them appear whiter, the chief researcher said.

The "tooth patch" is a hard-wearing and ultra-flexible material made from hydroxyapatite, the main mineral in tooth enamel, that could also mean an end to sensitive teeth.

"This is the world's first flexible apatite sheet, which we hope to use to protect teeth or repair damaged enamel," said Shigeki Hontsu, professor at Kinki University's Faculty of Biology-Oriented Science and Technology in western Japan.

"Dentists used to think an all-apatite sheet was just a dream, but we are aiming to create artificial enamel," the outermost layer of a tooth, he said earlier this month.

Researchers can create film just 0.004 millimetres (0.00016 inches) thick by firing lasers at compressed blocks of hydroxyapatite in a vacuum to make individual particles pop out.

These particles fall onto a block of salt which is heated to crystallise them, before the salt stand is dissolved in water.

The film is scooped up onto filter paper and dried, after which it is robust enough to be picked up by a pair of tweezers.

"The moment you put it on a tooth surface, it becomes invisible. You can barely see it if you examine it under a light," Hontsu told AFP by telephone.

The sheet has a number of minute holes that allow liquid and air to escape from underneath to prevent their forming bubbles when it is applied onto a tooth.

One problem is that it takes almost one day for the film to adhere firmly to the tooth's surface, said Hontsu.

The film is currently transparent but it is possible to make it white for use in cosmetic dentistry.

Researchers are experimenting on disused human teeth at the moment but the team will soon move to tests with animals, Hontsu said, adding he was also trying it on his own teeth.

Five years or more would be needed before the film could be used in practical dental treatment such as covering exposed dentin -- the sensitive layer underneath enamel -- but it could be used cosmetically within three years, Hontsu said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran starts production of advanced radar system
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps started mass-production of a highly advanced air-defense radar system named, Ra'd (Thunder), IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari announced on Sunday.

"The Ra'd air-defense system, which is more advanced than the Buckeye system has recently been developed and is now being mass-produced," Jafari told reporters in a press conference here in Tehran today.

"In ranges up to 50km and in altitudes from 25 to 27km (70,000 feet), Ra'd is ranked as a mid-range radar system," added the General. "The air-defense system will boost the Islamic Republic's ability to counter aerial threats."
Want to bet the Israelis already know how to turn it off?
In May 2012, Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Commander Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said Iran is mass-producing Ghadir Radar systems in great numbers, adding that the radar system covers areas over 1,000km in distance.

"This radar system can cover areas around 1,100 in range and its designing and production project ended early last (Iranian) year and is now being mass-produced," Hajizadeh told FNA at the time.

In June 2011, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps put into operation the new home-made long-range Ghadir radar system that enables its forces to monitor low-altitude satellites. The Ghadir radar system which covers areas (maximum) 1,100km in distance and 300km in altitude has been designed and built to identify aerial targets, radar-evading aircrafts, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles as well as low-altitude satellites.

Roadside bomb kills 14 in Lower Dir
[Dawn] A roadside kaboom killed 14 passengers in a van and maimed 12 others in northwest Pakistain near the Afghan border on Sunday, police said.

Officials said they did not know who set off the bomb, but such attacks are common in the country's remote tribal regions, where gunnies from both Pakistain and neighboring Afghanistan are active.

The vehicle was hit in the Jandol area when it was taking people from a border village to the town of Munda early in the morning, said Ejaz Abid, police chief in Lower Dir district where the attack took place.

He said the bomb was planted in a dirt road and apparently detonated by remote control. The injured were rushed to a hospital, where some remained at death's door.

Local government official Mahmood Aslam said two children were among the dead. He said that the vehicle was not carrying any tribal elders, militia commanders, or others from the area frequently targeted by turbans. "I don't understand why the passenger vehicle was targeted," he said.

Dilawar Khan, a survivor, said he heard a huge blast, and the passengers suddenly dived to the ground.

"There was a big bang and we all were lying here and there ... I was listening to people's cries but unable to see anything as dust and smoke engulfed the air ... Then I found myself in the hospital with my leg and hand bandaged," said Khan.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
For the first time, Iran acknowledges the presence of Iranian Guards in Syria
The commander-in-chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, said Sunday that members of his elite special operations unit, the Quds Force, are present in Syria and Lebanon, but only to provide counsel in military issues.

"Because of the special situation in Lebanon and Syria, some members of the Quds Force, who are responsible for foreign operations, are in these countries. This does not mean that we have a military presence there," Jafari said

According to him, Iran dispatched advisors to Damascus and Beirut several times.

Jafari also said that Iran is proud of defending Syria, a member of anti-Israeli resistance, by providing them with experience while other countries are not shy of supporting terrorist groups as the so-called "Free Syrian Army."

However, this is the first time the Guards publicly acknowledge the presence of Quds members in Syria.

The Quds force is a special unit responsible for all extra territorial operations and is particularly active in the Middle East.

Last month, the Free Syrian Army said that Al-Quds Force's commander, Maj. Gen. Qassem Suleimani, who has made several trips to Damascus to meet with Assad and his top commanders since January of this year, was killed in Damascus bombing along with six members of Assad's inner circle.

At that time Damascus and Tehran denied this news, With Iran saying that no forces are present outside Tehran.

Meanwhile, a Free Syrian Army spokesman told AFP news that after Col. Abdel Jabbar from the Free Syrian Army held a Skype discussion with international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, the Free Syrian Army believes Brahimi's mission is pointless and doomed to fail.

"We are confident that Brahimi will fail like the other envoys before him, but we will not be responsible for this failure," Jabbar, the Free Syrian Army chief of Aleppo province in north Syria, said by telephone.

"We discussed the general situation in Syria, including the destruction caused by the regime," he said, adding that the talks are "preliminary."

On the ground, violence that raged from early Sunday killed at least 70 people, mostly civilians. The data was provided by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Activists also said that 20 bodies, including a woman's, were found by residents in the neighbouring district of Tadamon that had been overrun by Assad regime forces.
We don't know why Iran announced that it has figures from Al Quds forces in Syria, which is considered to be the most important force in the Revolutionary Guard and the Iran's military wing abroad.

Apparently, Iran is not concerned about the reaction of this statement at the international level. This is unlike the eagerness of the international community, which despite the massacres and killings, says it does not want to support free Syrian Army with weapons.

The important point here is that the new international envoy communicated, for the first time, with the military opposition. He is not like Annan, who met with political opposition only. This is an achievement in favor of Free Syrian Army.

Today News stated that a high-ranking officer, Yousef Assad, a relative of President Bashar al-Assad, has announced his defection from the Damascus regime.

Although there is a video confirming this, I heard from private sources that the Free Syrian Army intelligence is suspicious about the honesty of this man. He is under the observation of the Free Syrian Army until truthfulness is proven.

Libya arrests 50 after US envoy’s killing
Libyan authorities have arrested about 50 people after last week’s killing of US ambassador Chris Stevens in a mob attack in the city of Benghazi, Libya’s parliament chief said Sunday, saying it was planned by foreigners.

‘The number reached about 50,’ Mohammed Al Megaryef, president of the Libyan National Congress, told CBS News in an interview.
"Round up the usual suspects!"
Stevens and three other Americans were killed on Tuesday when suspected militants fired on the US consulate in the eastern Libyan city with rocket-propelled grenades and set it ablaze.

Megaryef said ‘a few’ of those who joined in the attack were foreigners, who had entered Libya ‘from different directions, some of them definitely from Mali and Algeria.’

‘The others are affiliates and maybe sympathizers,’ he added.

Megaryef said the government has learned the attack was not the result of a spontaneous outburst of anger over a US-made anti-Islam movie which has triggered sometimes deadly protests in the Arab and Muslim world.

‘It was planned, definitely, it was planned by foreigners, by people who entered the country a few months ago. And they were planning this criminal act since their arrival,’ he told CBS.

Obama 'measured' on Mideast crisis: Top US official
[Al Ahram] President Barack Obama
The Cambridge police acted stupidly...
has been "incredibly calm, incredibly steady, and incredibly measured" in his handling of the anti-US protests in the Mohammedan world, a top official said Sunday.
The robust defense of the president from US ambassador to the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
Susan Rice follows criticism from Republican opponents that Obama's leadership is weak and has encouraged beturbanned goons to exploit the Arab Spring.

"What we've seen is that the president has been incredibly calm, incredibly steady, and incredibly measured in his approach to this set of developments," Rice told ABC's "This Week" program.

"His interventions, his leadership, has ensured that in Egypt, in Yemen, in Tunisia, in Libya, and many other parts of the world, that leaders have come out and made very plain that there's no excuse for this violence."

called for greater "moral clarity" in Obama's foreign policy.

Romney toned down his rhetoric Thursday after several negative headlines and complaints from within his own party that he had made an ill-timed mischaracterization of Obama's handling of rapidly escalating events.

But on Friday Romney's pick for vice president, Ryan, led a withering attack on Obama's foreign policy, accusing it of diminishing America's global standing and of emboldening bully boys.

"Peace, freedom, and civilized values have enemies in this world, as we have been reminded by events in Egypt, Libya, and Yemen," Ryan told the conservative Values Voter Summit in Washington.

Bomb kills three Yemeni soldiers, wounds 6
[Al Ahram] Three Yemeni soldiers were killed and six others maimed in a roadside kabooming that targeted the convoy of a security chief in the southeastern city of Mukalla on Sunday, a security official and witnesses said. The bomb went off as a three-vehicle convoy passed through the Huwaysh neighbourhood of the coastal city, witnesses said.

It targeted the convoy of Colonel Abdulwahab al-Waeli, head of Central Security in the city, the security official said. It was not clear who was behind the attack but Al-Qaeda remains active in the south and east of impoverished Yemen.

Al-Qaeda loyalists have carried out a spate of deadly attacks against security forces and their militia allies since President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi came to power earlier this year pledging to crush the hard boys.Al-Qaeda took advantage of a nearly year-long uprising against Hadi's predecessor, veteran strongman President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh

Catholic school in Mindanao agrees to lift hijab ban
A Catholic school will soon be lifting its controversial ban on the the hijab, after talks between Christians and Muslims in Zamboanga City.

A joint statement by Pilar College and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) said the decision was based on "common values" such as hospitality, communion, respectful service, openness to dialogue, and sensitivity to the signs of the times.

The statement did not specify when the ban will be lifted. It said the school will do so after introducing "programs toward the voluntary wearing of hijab".

Sister Maria Fe Gerodias explained that the school has banned the hijab for over a century -- not just recently, as reports said -- because some Muslims had experienced discrimination over the veil.

She said, "The Christians do not really understand very well the value and the need for the hijab. That's why we need to conduct a formative program, educative program, for our Christian parents, to educate students and teachers. And I think that's also needed for the Muslim communities, because they themselves have varying interpretations of the use of the hijab."

The NCMF, for its part, will assist the school in implementing the programs, and assign a qualified female representative to regularly participate in implementing the school's interfaith programs.

Four dead after attack on military vehicle in southern Thailand
Gunmen ambushed a military vehicle in southern Thailand on Saturday, leaving three paramilitary rangers and a housekeeper dead. The 6 a.m. attack occurred in Yala province a few hours after a clash in Pattani province in which one suspected terrorist militant was killed and another arrested.

Witnesses said the rangers and housekeeper were on their way to a market when the gunmen opened fire from nearby woods. After killing them, the attackers set fire to the truck and fled. Police believe the gunmen are members of a southern separatist movement led by Abdul Roseh Jarong.

Afghanistan
Afghan Defence issues culture guides to tackle Afghan insider attacks
Don't take offence if NATO soldiers exit the shower naked or ask to see a picture of your wife -- it is normal and no reason to open fire, intone new cultural guidelines from the Afghan defence ministry. Five thousand copies of a hastily written 28-page brochure have been distributed among 195,000 members of the Afghan army, most of them illiterate, in the latest attempt to clamp down on a phenomenon known as insider killings.

NATO attributes around 75 percent of the attacks to grudges, misunderstandings and cultural differences, so the Afghan ministry has taken matters into their own hands with avuncular advice for soldiers, even if they can't read. More than 10 years after NATO troops came to Afghanistan, Western habits -- like winking, swearing and raising the middle finger -- need to be spelt out to make sure Afghan troops in the deeply religious country do not feel offended.

"Even minor cultural differences can cause friction and misunderstanding," says the "Brochure for Comprehending the Culture of the Coalition Forces" before listing taboos in Afghan culture that are seen as perfectly normal in the West. "Remember all misunderstandings are unintentional," it warned.

And advice for heated moments was simple.

"If you or your ISAF colleagues become angry, stay away for a while until the situation becomes normal. In that case, tell your commander to help you, and to mediate or reconcile between you and your ISAF partners," the pamphlet reads.

to protest the latter's refusal to remove a controversial anti-Islam film from its online video platform YouTube.

The short film, which denigrates Islam and the Prophet Mohamed, sparked violent demonstrations across the region last week.

"Is someone really calling to boycott Google? I didn't think this could be done by someone who realises we're in the 21st century," El-Sayad declared via Twitter on Saturday.

Somali Forces, AMISOM troops Capture Bibi Town
(Sh.M.Network)--Somali government forces with the support of AMISOM troops have captured the strategic town of Bibi in southern Somalia.

During the 12:30pm operation, the forces faced little resistance from the Al‐Qaeda affiliated terror group, Al‐Shabaab. An assortment of weapons and ammunition was also recovered from the fleeing bad turbans.

Three Somali soldiers sustained minor injuries during the engagement and have been accorded the necessary medical attention. AMISOM forces did not suffer any casualties. Bibi is an important town situated at a road junction linking it to Beles Quoqaani and Afmadow.

AMISOM Force Commander, Lieutenant General Andrew Gutti, said the capture of the town would help enhance security for the population in the area. "AMISOM is committed to supporting the people of Somalia as they endeavor to rebuild their country." He said.

"We will continue to do all in our power to ensure their hopes and dreams for a better future are not frustrated by the terrorists." He added.

Iranian foundation increases bounty on Rushdie's head
An Iranian religious foundation has upped its reward for killing Salman Rushdie, supposedly in response to an anti-Islamic film sparking protests across the Muslim world.

Hassan Sanei, the foundation's head, in a statement reported by the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said, "I am adding another $500,000 to the reward for killing Salman Rushdie, and anyone who carries out this sentence will receive the whole amount immediately."

The reward offered by the state-linked foundation now stands at $3.3 million, according to the report.

Sanei, who is also the foundation's representative to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said, "Surely if the sentence of the Imam (Khomeini) had been carried out, the later insults in the form of caricatures, articles and the making of movies would not have occurred."

Rushdie, appearing on British radio before the news of the bounty increase, called the film "idiotic ... a piece of garbage" but also condemned mob violence against it as "an ugly reaction that needs to be named as such".

Israel's El Al 'looks to end Cairo flights'
[France 24] Israel's El Al airlines is seeking to put an immediate end to its weekly flight to Cairo for the first time since the signing of the 1979 peace treaty with Egypt, the Maariv newspaper reported on Sunday.

The plans were laid out in a letter sent by El Al's chief executive to Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, which pointed to heavy security requirements and high operational costs, rendering it not economically viable.

"Operating the flight route to Cairo and maintaining the necessary infrastructure for that requires a large amount of security and operational resources, and heavy economic expenditure which amounts to hundreds of thousands of dollars annually," wrote CEO Eliezer Shakedi.

"Without any commercial justification and in light of the high economic cost of operating this line, El Al cannot continue to bear these heavy expenses, and therefore is intending to stop operating the route to Cairo immediately," said the letter, excerpts of which were published in Maariv.

The airline was not immediately available to comment on the report, but a front man for Lieberman confirmed receiving the letter. "The matter is being looked into," Irena Etinger told AFP.

El Al has been flying the route between Tel Aviv and Cairo for more than three decades, running at least one flight per week, Maariv said.

But since the overthrow of president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
in February 2011 and the unrest which followed, the airline decided to operate the service on a reduced basis according to commercial needs in order to fulfil government demands, Shakedi wrote.

The flights, he said, were almost empty, and if the airline were to continue operating them, it would need assurances about which government body would help foot the bill.

"In a situation like this, and given the sensitive security situation in Egypt, El Al would have to make special arrangements which would have substantial costs," he wrote.

In light of Israel's strained ties with Egypt's new Islamic President Mohammed Morsi, the foreign ministry fears the flights may never be reinstated.

"Any element of normalisation between the two countries that is stopped, simply won't be reinstated," a ministry source told the paper.

Saudi sheikh: Women can log in online without 'guardian'
[Al Ahram] A Saudi scholar has played down an Islamic fatwa (ruling) that forbids women from logging in online without an escort.

"The law for internet usage for men and women should be the same, even if the internet has useful and harmful websites," said Sheikh Mohamed El-Aly, professor of Islamic law at Imam Mohamed Ben Saud University to Al-Youm Online, a Saudi news website, Sunday.

According to Islamic law, women are not allowed to travel without a male escort who is either her husband or a close relative she couldn't marry, including uncles, father-in-law and adult nieces.

In 2010, Sheikh Saad El-Ghamdi issued a fatwa banning women from logging in online without a chaperon sitting at her side.

"Women are similar to other beings, yet they are weak and emotional, which drags them towards what is against God's rule ... The internet is full with tempting things that will be very hard for the weak woman to avoid ... Thus an escort who is aware of her weak psyche, which is prone to sex and emotion, is to accompany her while being online," said Sheikh Saad El-Ghamdi in 2010.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
Sheikh El-Aly has different views on women. "God blesses the Moslem woman with righteous thinking by which she distinguishes between what is good and bad for her," he told the Saudi press Sunday.

The 2010 fatwa spread widely on social media sites. Sheikh Saad Ghamadi is a Saudi who graduated from the College of Sharia of the Islamic Imam Mohamed Ben Saud University.

US embassy shuts down consular services in Yemen
[Al Ahram] The US embassy in Yemen has suspended all consular services for two weeks, the mission said in a statement on its website, after four people were killed in violent anti-American protests in Sanaa.

The statement, published Saturday, said the embassy will be "closed for all consular services through September 29," warning citizens of the "potential" for protests near the mission.

An angry mob of protesters tried to storm the embassy grounds and clashed with security forces on Thursday, leaving four dead.

In response, the US ordered the deployment of a Marines anti-terrorism unit to Yemen to help protect the American embassy, a move that was condemned by the Yemeni parliament.

The embassy also renewed an existing travel warning to Yemen and called on Americans in the country to leave. "The security threat to all US citizens in Yemen remains critical," it said.

Church in Niger ransacked in riot over anti-Islam film
In Niger, several Christian leaders are being held in protective custody after demonstrators angry at an anti-Islamic film ransacked a major Catholic church. Hundreds of protesters stormed the cathedral in Niger's second-largest city of Zinder after Friday prayers, and set fire to US and British flags.

The Islamic Council of Niger, the top religious body in the country, condemned the film, but also appealed for churches to be spared.

A policeman was injured in clashes that erupted during the protests in Zinder, situated near the border with Nigeria, and about a dozen demonstrators were arrested.

A local radio journalist said, "After Friday prayers, hundreds of protesters broke down the door of the church and totally trashed it, before setting fire to all the documents and breaking a statue of the Virgin Mary."

"Several Christian leaders are being held by the police to ensure their safety," he said, adding that security forces have been deployed to prevent further attacks against churches.

Egypt trade balance deficit surges for sixth time in June
[Al Ahram] Egypt's trade deficit saw yet another surge in June, growing a whopping 49 per cent over the same month last year, latest data from Egypt's official statistics body CAPMAS showed Sunday.

The trade deficit reached LE17.6 billion in June 2012 versus LE11.9 billion a year earlier. On a monthly level, the trade deficit dropped from LE19 million in May.

A drop in exports was behind the increased deficit, the former falling 17.6 per cent in June to sit at LE14.7 billion.

The CAPMAS report attributed the exports drop to a decline in overseas demand for Egypt's petroleum products, garments, fertilisers and electrical wires.

Extremists among Muslim rioters at Sydney protest
Al-Qaeda sympathisers were among those involved in violent weekend protests in Sydney, which saw Muslim men engage in a series of clashes with security forces.

Several of the hundreds of protesters who marched on the city's US consulate were carrying the black flags adopted by the proscribed terror organisation and its splinter groups, including the Islamic State of Iraq. Many others wore headbands which said: "We are your soldiers, O Mohammed."

Muslim leaders denounced the violence yesterday, saying the protest had been "hijacked" by a group which called itself the "Sixth Pillar".

One of the six men arrested on Saturday, 29-year-old champion boxer Ahmed Elomar, appeared in court yesterday wearing a T-shirt with the words "Sixth Pillar". Some sources suggested the group were associated with controversial Sydney sheik Feiz Mohammed.

The president of the Lebanese Muslim Association, Samier Dandan, said they were not part of any of the Australia's established Islamic organisations. He said, "Where and how they operate we still don't know."

Six people have been charged in relation to the violence, in which four people were hospitalized, while police have created a strike force to analyze footage of the demonstration in order to track down others involved.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said, "This is a no-nonsense engagement. If you want to act like you are extremist criminals, we will treat you like you're extremist criminals. I can guarantee those extremists who caused these problems, they will be joining those already charged. If you were sensible, you would come forward now and speak with police."

A second police operation will monitor the aftermath of the protest, including social media websites thought to have been used to orchestrate Saturday's violence.

There are fears a second peaceful protest against the video planned for next weekend could be disrupted.

Julia Gillard yesterday called the video "truly repulsive".

"(But) there is never any excuse for violent behavior. To anybody who wants to replicate that behavior today, I just want to say very strongly that this kind of conduct has no place on the streets of our country," the Prime Minister said.

Tony Abbott said the protests were not "an acceptable face of Islam ... Newcomers to this country are not expected to surrender their heritage, but they are expected to surrender up their hatreds".

He added, "I think all Australians need to give a very strong message ... violent protest is never acceptable in a country such as ours."

Keysar Trad, founder of the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, was appalled to see children at the protest holding up signs that read "Behead all those who insult the prophet".

He said, "Our prophet would be sitting in heaven wondering are those really my followers?"

Flood havoc in Balochistan 600,000 marooned in two districts
[Dawn] Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
Chief Secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh Mohammad has said that floods triggered by torrential rains have marooned almost 600,000 people in Naseerabad and Jaffarabad districts.

The floods have caused at least 22 deaths, destroyed crops on 24,866 acres and swept away about 4,000 houses.

Naseerabad, Jaffarabad, Sibi, Jhal Magsi and Kachi are the worst affected districts.

"Dera Allahyar, Dera Murad Jamali, Sohbatpur, Manjopur and Manjoshori are under two to six feet of water. Thousands of families are in distress," the chief secretary told news hounds at the Provincial Disaster Management Authority's office after supervising the despatch of relief goods to the affected areas.

He said the government had sought assistance from the Army and the Frontier Corps to step up the pace of relief work.

Fateh Mohammad said he had asked his counterpart in Sindh not to divert water from Jacobabad towards Balochistan because it would aggravate the problems manifold. "We are in touch with the Sindh government to avoid more losses in Balochistan."

The chief secretary called upon international organizations, the federal government and philanthropists to help the provincial administration in transportation of essential commodities to the flood-ravaged region.

He said all resources were being used to stop the spread of water-borne diseases and to meet shortage of food and drinking water.

Electricity supply to the main towns in Naseerabad and Jaffarabad districts had been restored and efforts were afoot to repair the damaged roads.

"The irrigation department's engineers are at work to plug breaches at 13 places," Balochistan's top bureaucrat said. Six army helicopters and 18 boats have been pressed in to move affected people to relief camps.

In reply to a question, he said the losses caused by floods in northern and southern Balochistan were so huge that the provincial government would not be able to cope with the disaster on its own.

He said the chief minister was coordinating the rescue operation by PDMA, the provincial government, the Army and the FC.

The Balochistan government has decided that every member of the provincial assembly will release Rs20 million out of the funds granted to him for the affected people, Fateh Mohammad added.

Protestors go on rampage in Karachi
[Dawn] One person was killed and nine others were maimed after protestors led violent protests in front of the US consulate in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, DawnNews reported.

The protestors were voicing their anger in relation to a anti-Islam video, which has led to uproar in other Mohammedan countries.

Police fired bullets in the air and used tear gas and water canons to disperse some 1,000 people at a rally organised by Majlis-e-Wahadatul Mohammedaneen, a Shia religious organization, according to an AFP photographer.

A senior local police official, Asif Ijaz told AFP: "The police had to fire tear gas shells after the protestors refused to pay any heed to our warning."

At one stage protestors broke through security cordons and got close to the heavily guarded US consulate, pelting stones at the building.

They chanted "Down with America", "We will sacrifice our lives to safeguard the honour of the Prophet" and "Hang the film maker."

Richard Silver, a front man for the US consulate, said: "There has been no damage or injury to any of our personnel at the consulate."

DawnNews also reports that protestors have torched two vehicles near M.A. Jinnah Road.

Activists from the Majlis-e-Wahadatul Mohammedaneen have also protested at Numaish Chowrangi, where police had to resort to gun sex to disperse the crowds.

News reports said that four police vehicles, a petrol pump and a bank were also set on fire by protestors.

The Shia Ulema Council have called for three days mourning in response to the death of an activist in Bloody Karachi.

The martians spacecraft sat off in the distance:

Libya Protest 'Hijacked' by Extremists, U.S.'s Rice Says
[Bloomberg] The protest in Libya that killed U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans last week appears to have begun spontaneously and was "hijacked" by myrmidons, United Nations
...When talk is your weapon it's hard to make yourself heard over the artillery...
Ambassador Susan Rice said.
No, Ms. Rice, it was a professionally planned terrorist attack. There were no 'protesters' on scene, and it was not 'spontaneous'. Either you know this and you're lying, or you don't know this and are clueless. These are not exclusive possibilities...
Intelligence so far shows the protest began as "a spontaneous, not a premeditated, response" to demonstrations in Cairo over a "very offensive video" criticizing Islam, Rice said yesterday on ABC's "This Week" program. "As that unfolded, it seems to have been hijacked, let us say, by some individual clusters of Death Eaters who came with heavier weapons."

"We do not have information at present that leads us to conclude that this was premeditated or preplanned," she said, speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation." She said on ABC that a Federal Bureau of Investigation probe aims to determine what happened in the Sept. 11 attack at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Even so, Arizona Senator John Maverick McCain
... the Senator-for-Life from Arizona, former presidential candidate and even more former foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution...
, the senior Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, disputed the contention that the attack on the Benghazi consulate was largely spontaneous.

"How spontaneous is a demonstration when people bring rocket-propelled grenades and heavy weapons?" McCain asked on CBS yesterday. He said there was "no doubt" the attack was waged by "extremists," though he didn't know how long it had been planned.

'Turning Point'

Mohammed Yussef Magariaf, the recently elected head of Libya's General National Congress, said in an interview in Benghazi that the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate "is a turning point for the country."

"Confrontation is necessary and inevitable with these elements," Magariaf said. "Today, it is the Americans, tomorrow it is going to be the Libyans."

Magariaf said the assault on the U.S. mission was part of a wider campaign to destabilize Libya, and the forces of Evil must be "confronted" by pro-government forces. He said that communications intercepted by the U.S. ahead of the attack linked al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb to another Islamist brigade known as Ansar al-Shariah.
...a Yemeni Islamist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends...

He said separately on CBS's "Face the Nation" program yesterday that about 50 arrests have been made in connection with the attack.

Taking an oath is now just another meaningless spouting of gibberish to these people, because it is all about power and influence and prestige and future jobs, not actual public service with the good of the nation uppermost in their mind. This smug jackass actaully thinks she is credible as she tells people that know better that it was all, spontaneous. Mortars, RPGs and automatic weapons, site plans, compromised safe hous locations and photo surveillance all were "spontaneous" and she cites an investigation by the FBI, who were afraid to land because no one has secure the crime scene on AMerical sovereign territory becasue its "too dangerous". We need to get these creatures out of Washington, and then cauterize the mold they left in the civil service and courts.

Basque leader apologises to ETA victims in book
[Al Ahram] The cooled for a few years
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
leader of the Basque independence movement, Arnaldo Otegi, apologises to victims of the bully boy separatist group ETA in a new book, according to extracts published Sunday.

For the first time the leftwing independent leader offers "his most sincere apologies" for exacerbating the "pain and humiliation" of victims of ETA, which announced last year it had abandoned its armed struggle but has not formally disarmed or disbanded.

Arnaldo Otegi was cooled for a few years
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
for six years in 2009 for attempting to reform Batasuna, the separatist party banned in 2003 and considered the political arm of ETA.
In the book compiled from interviews, "El tiempo de las luces" ("The time of light"), which comes out on September 28, the Basque leader said he wanted to make amends, according to extracts published in the Gara newspaper.

"If as front man (and I speak in the name of all spokesmen of Batasuna), I have added in any way to the pain, suffering or humiliation of the families of the victims of armed actions by ETA, I want to present here my most sincere apologies, accompanied by an 'I am sorry' from the heart," he wrote.

Pelosi says Medicare will help Democrats win majority in House
[LA Times] House Minority Speaker Nancy San Fran Nan Pelosi
Congresswoman-for-Life from the San Francisco Bay Area, born into a family of politicians. Formerly Speaker of the House, but it's not her fault they lost. Really. Noted for her heavily botoxed grimace...
laughed off the chances of a Willard Mitt Romney
...former governor of Massachussetts, currently the Publican nominee for president. More to the point, he isn't President B.O...
presidency, while trumpeting the possibility that Democrats will retake the House of Representatives, during an interview aired Sunday on CNN.

Pelosi, speaking with host Candy Crowley on "State of the Union," pointed to one issue in particular that she thinks will deliver the House to Democrats: Medicare.

"We have been saying there are three important issues in this campaign. And in alphabetical order, they are Medicare, Medicare, Medicare," she said.

"On August 11, when Gov. Romney chose [Rep. Paul D.] Ryan, that was a pivotal day. That is the day things really changed," she added, attributing the Wisconsin congressmen's own controversial Medicare proposals with bringing the program back to the forefront of the election-year debate, and in her opinion, putting the ball back into the Democrats' court.

"We were on a path. I would have said to you then we were dead even. Well, the momentum is very much with us, the Medicare issue in this campaign. We have the message, we have the messengers, we have the money, we have the mobilization. We have a very excellent chance to take back the House," Pelosi said.

As for the likelihood that Pelosi and congressional Democrats would work together with a Romney administration, regardless of a return to a majority in the House, Pelosi refuted the possibility.

"Mitt Romney isn't going to be President of the United States," she said with a laugh. "Everyone knows that."

#2  Hmmmmmmmm...

As published in Forbes and originally published in the journal Social Psychology and Personality Science, Botox takes away or dampens the emotional feelings in a particular situation. That may be due to less interaction between facial muscle movement and brain. According to David Neal, a psychology professor at the University of Southern California, “if muscular signals from the face to the brain are dampened, you’re less able to read emotions.”[64]

One way botox might affect emotional feelings is by dampening the relay of signals from the face to the amygdala and brainstem centers for autonomic arousal.[65]

The mental effects of botox may extend beyond emotional feelings to the ability to understand language about emotions. An experimental study suggests that cosmetic use of botulinum toxin for treatment of glabellar lines affects human cognition. As reported in the L.A. Times,[66] Havas and colleagues (Havas, Glenberg, Gutowski, Lucarelli, & Davidson, 2010 [67]) asked subjects to read emotional (angry, sad, happy) sentences before and two weeks after botox injections in the corrugator supercilii muscle used in frowning. Reading times for angry and sad sentences were longer after botox injection than before injection, while reading times for happy sentences were unchanged. This finding suggests that facial muscle paralysis has a selective effect in human cognition, and shows that botox hinders the ability to understand language. According to the lead researcher in this study, "botox causes a kind of mild, temporary, cognitive blindness to information in the world, social information about the emotions of other people."

#8  Some people, like Pelosi, think they can talk to old people as if they were children. But I think there are a lot of old people with enough teeth left in their heads to be insulted by it. They know where the money comes from and they have a pretty good idea about how it gets wasted and squandered by the likes of Madam Pelosi.
