The International Court of Justice said the U.K. should hand back to Mauritius control of an Indian Ocean archipelago where a key U.S. naval base is located.
"The U.K.'s continued administration of the Chagos archipelago "is an unlawful act of a continuing character," court President Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf said in The Hague. "Accordingly the U.K. is under an obligation to bring an end to its administration of the Chagos archipelago as rapidly as possible," Yusuf said.
The United Nations in 2017 sought an advisory opinion from the ICJ, its principal judicial organ, on the legal status of the archipelago.
Chagos is part of the British Indian Ocean Territory, which has been administered by the U.K. since 1965, when it paid the then self-governing colony of Mauritius 3 million pounds ($3.9 million) for control of the islands. Between 1967 and 1973, hundreds of inhabitants were removed to make way for the Diego Garcia U.S. military base, which has been used to launch bomber jets for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth in August obtained the backing of the African Union and about 30 other countries in his bid to have control of the archipelago returned to Mauritius. The request to the ICJ excludes Diego Garcia, he said. So the question is: will giving back the other islands present a security threat to facilities on Diego Garcia?

Researchers conducted the study with the goal to find recurring traits in those who enjoy extreme privilege in America. "We found that if an individual spends their time doing things like sitting around on Twitter telling white people not to eat Thai food, or men to quit trying to get jobs, or Asians to quit getting such good grades, then there is a good chance they are the beneficiaries of a highly privileged society," said lead research administrator Susan Perry. "The consistent through-line we found was boredom. Privilege leads to boredom, which leads to looking for things to gripe about, and many people choose to gripe about perceived privilege issues," she added.
"We’ve uncovered a loop. The more privilege people have, the more unprivileged they feel," said Prentice Henson, another researcher on the project. This privilege loop has become known by researchers as the "spoiled bunch of crybabies" effect. "It turns out if you are looking at your insanely wealthy, free society that is full of opportunities for all, you should take a deep breath, quit your whining, and be thankful."
"There is a consistent pattern of joylessness, boredom, and self-hate at work here," said psychologist Carl Menton, who helped write the study. "These people just can’t stand themselves. What they need most is probably a hug, if they didn’t find hugs so micro-aggressive."

Sheriff Andy Louderback of Jackson County, Texas, said border security efforts need to focus more on disrupting the cartels.

Mexican cartels, otherwise known as transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), show continued signs of growth in the United States, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in a 2018 report.
The cartels control lucrative smuggling corridors, primarily across the southwest border, and maintain the greatest drug-trafficking influence in the United States, states the DEA.
"They continue to expand their criminal influence by engaging in business alliances with other TCOs, including independent TCOs, and work in conjunction with transnational gangs, U.S.-based street gangs, prison gangs, and Asian money laundering organizations," the DEA said.

I've heard a lot of progressives claim that most illegal narcotics shipments are smuggled through legal ports of entry so a wall will not stop them. But if they're not stopping those shipments, how do they know how much is coming across the border, and how do they know at which points along the border they're coming? After all, the whole point of smuggling is to get it across the border without ICE knowing about it. I don't understand how these progressives know so much.

From 1990-1995 I was the Active Duty Commander of the California National Guard Counterdrug Program, and among other things, had senior command for the unit constructing the initial border wall, the improved road network and observation posts along the border, as well as manpower support for inspections at the 5 ports of entry along the California portion of the US-Mexico border. We worked extensively with the US Customs Service and the Border Patrol during that period focused on counterdrug interdiction. Althou0gh a quarter century ago, I am confident that my information still has validity, given my subsequent years in Criminal Justice policy and Homeland Security in California. The cartels use both POE and between the POE routes, and move most quantities in small bulk, so seizures don't become too costly. And they are flexible and cunning, flooding a zone with smaller loads and mixing in illegals to overwhelm sector personnel and resources. And when enforcement is heightened, they shift the volume to other lesser enforced areas. To argue that enforcement at the POEs would solve the problem is either uninformed or disingenuous since it would merely move primary routes between the ports. Both are essential, and the physical barrier enables the limited number of BP agents to be more effective at the reduced number of incursions. The same reasoning applies to the silly argument about the wall and ladders or tunnels. While both can overcome a physical barrier, the numbers of those who do so are massively diminished, again making BP enforcement more effective. Sorry for the long post but I an deeply trou0bled by the way this isn't being countered with common sense/ There has been a crisis for decades, and the Democrat resistance is about political power, cloaked in silly reasoning to guile the public, vile and destructive motives!

[Free Beacon] Senate Democrats voted to ensure that babies who survive abortion can die without care on Monday evening.
Democrats blocked the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act in a Monday roll call vote, which would have made it mandatory for doctors to provide medical care to babies who are born alive during an abortion. The bill needed 60 votes to pass, but fell on a 53-44 vote. Democrats voted in favor of the position outlined by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam in a radio interview defending legislation defending abortion.
"The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable," Northam said. "The infant would be resuscitated if that's what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother."
The legislation sponsored by Sen. Ben Sasse (R., Neb.) had nothing to do with Roe v. Wade and the ability to obtain an abortion, but only babies outside of the womb‐like those described by Northam. The bill is overwhelmingly popular with voters, including a vast majority of those who identify as pro-choice; 70 percent of Democrats, 75 percent of independents, and 86 percent of Republicans support providing care to abortion survivors, according to the McLaughlin & Associates poll commissioned by the pro-life Susan B. [AlAhram] Ottoman Turkish police on Monday launched operations to detain 110 more individuals, mostly soldiers, suspected of ties to the group blamed for the 2016 coup attempt, the Ankara public prosecutor's office said.
Tens of thousands of people have been held over alleged ties to US-based Moslem preacher Fethullah Gülen ... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world... since the failed coup while over 140,000 public sector employees have been sacked or suspended.
Although Ankara has come under heavy criticism from its Western allies and human rights ...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless... defenders over the scale of the crackdown, Ottoman Turkish officials stress that the raids are necessary to remove Gulen's influence in state institutions.
The prosecutor's office said Monday that among the latest suspects sought were 43 lieutenants and 50 sergeants from the Ottoman Turkish land forces.
The prosecutor's office said 67 of the suspects were active duty soldiers.
The prosecutor also issued warrants for nine civilians -- of whom it said eight had already been taken into custody on Monday -- who had worked or were working in the health ministry or hospitals.
The suspects are accused of having links to Gulen who Ankara says ordered the attempted overthrow of President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First ... Last week, prosecutors in Istanbul, Ankara and the Aegean province of Izmir issued arrest warrants for over 600 people as part of multiple probes into the Gulen movement.

Paris (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi President Barham Saleh said on Monday that the trial of Islamic State detainees who were handed over to Iraq last week by the Syrian Democratic Forces will be held in Iraq.
“They are accused of having commanded operations against Iraqis and Iraqi installations in Iraq, and they will be tried according to Iraqi law,” Reuters quoted Saleh as saying at a press conference in Paris with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. “We are acting within the confines of international law on this matter.”
Saleh did not explicitly say whether the detainees were French.
“All those accused of having committed crimes in Iraq, against the Iraqi people or against Iraqi installations in Iraq, we will seek to prosecute them,” the Iraqi president said.
Macron, meanwhile, said that it would be up to the local government in Iraq to decide whether to prosecute the Islamic State detainees there.

[Rudaw] At least 130 Iraqis held on ties to ISIS by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were transferred to Iraqi Security Forces over the weekend, increasing the most recent figure to 280.
The alleged ISIS member were handed over to the Iraqi Army "to take legal action," according to a statement from the Iraqi Security Media Cell (SMC).
It detailed that in total, the SDF have detained 500 Iraqis in Syria. Upon their return to Iraq, their identities are verified, checked into a database, submitted to the judiciary and arrest warrants issued when required.
Only Iraqi nationals were included in the handover.
Previous transfers have occurred in the Euphrates River Valley near the Iraqi city of al-Qaim in Anbar province and near al-Boukamal in Deir ez-Zor governorate, including a 150-person transfer last week.
The move comes amid an announced US military pullout from Syria that was slowed on Friday following an announcement by President Donald Trump that a few hundred US forces would remain with the SDF in Syria.
The United States has repeatedly called on countries to repatriate ISIS suspects and bring them to justice through their own court systems.
The SDF claims it holds around 20,000 alleged ISIS members and their families hailing from primarily Syria, Iraq, Europe, and Russia.

[DAWN] Britannia on Monday said it will ban the political wing of Hezbollah, making membership of the movement or inviting support for it a crime.
The decision follows outrage over the display of the Hezbollah flag, which features a Kalashnikov assault rifle, at pro-Paleostinian demonstrations in London.
"Hezbollah is continuing in its attempts to destabilise the fragile situation in the Middle East," Home Secretary Sajid Javid said in a statement.
"We are no longer able to distinguish between their already banned military wing and the political party. Because of this, I have taken the decision to proscribe the group in its entirety," he said.
The ban is subject to a vote in parliament this week.
Hezbollah is a Shia bully boy movement established in 1982 during the Lebanese civil war.
Its capture of two Israeli soldiers in 2006 sparked a 34-day war in which 1,200 people were killed.
The movement, now a major political party in Leb, holds three cabinet posts.
"It is clear the distinction between Hezbollah's military and political wings does not exist," Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said in Monday's statement.
"This does not change our ongoing commitment to Leb, with whom we have a broad and strong relationship," he said.

[DAWN] PESHAWAR: Public and private hospitals have reserved beds and ambulances after government’s directives to stand alert for ’national cause’, a reference to the tension with neighbouring India.
On February 22, health department ordered hospitals to reserve 25 per cent beds on a special directive of government for ’national cause’. "The institutions have been directed to reserve a minimum of 60 beds and the department should be informed immediately the same day," it said.
The directive was issued day after the National Security Council held a meeting with prime minister in the chair on February 21 to examine the country’s overall security situation in view of tension with India.
Health Secretary Dr Syed Farooq Jamil told Dawn that he was not concerned if the order was issued in view of tension with India, but the hospitals were well-equipped and staffed to cope with any health emergency. "Our hospitals in immediate response have reserved beds and other services in line with the directive came from the centre," he added.

[DAWN] The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced the date the first astronaut from the Gulf Arab nation will go into space.
The UAE said on Monday it will send either Hazza al-Mansoori or Sultan al-Neyadi to the International Space Station on September 25 aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket.
Organisers had earlier said they would announce the astronaut who was going but instead gave just the launch date.
Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum had already announced the astronauts' names last September.
The UAE has a fledgling space program with big ambitions. It launched its first locally made satellite KhalifaSat from Japan in October. It wants to launch a probe to Mars in 2020.
The UAE also says it wants to colonise Mars by 2117, with a fully functioning city of 600,000.

The Israeli military detected and blocked an attempt by Iran to infiltrate its missile warning system in 2017, preventing a potentially life-threatening situation in which Israeli citizens could no longer rely on the sirens that alert them to an incoming attack, a senior cyber defense official told the Bloomberg news outlet on Monday.
The Iranian effort was first spotted in 2017 and, once its target was understood, the Israel Defense Forces worked to block the cyber attack and track the hackers, Brig. Gen. (res.) Noam Sha’ar, the outgoing head of the cyber defense division of the military’s Cyber Defense Directorate, told the website.

[Mil Times] The Supreme Court decided last week not to review the case of a retired Marine who was court-martialed and convicted of sexual assault in 2015, upholding the Pentagon’s authority to prosecute retirees for crimes they commit even after leaving the service. When you retire it's not the same thing as a discharge. You go into retired reserve. You can be recalled to active status or request reactivation. I worked with a lieutenant colonel in 2004-05 who was on oxygen, but who had requested recall post-9/11. My own request was declined since my background was Russian and Vietnamese and my security clearance had been expired for almost ten years.
The decision leaves the possibility open for retirees to face punishment, such as sailors involved in the Navy’s "Fat Leonard" scandal and retired Army Gen. David Petraeus ‐ who pleaded guilty to providing classified information to his biographer.
On Feb. 19, the Supreme Court chose not to hear the case of retired Marine Staff Sgt. Steven M. Larrabee, who left the Corps after 20 years of service but continued to reside in Iwakuni, Japan, his final duty station, where he managed two local bars.
On Nov. 15, 2015, after a night of drinking, Larrabee sexually assaulted a bartender at one of the bars he managed and used his cell phone to record the incident.
Larrabee "was subsequently convicted by a court-martial, pursuant to his pleas, on one count of sexual assault and one count of indecent recording in violation of Articles 120 and 120c of the Uniform Code of Military Justice," according to court records.
The military judge sentenced Larrabee to eight years’ confinement, a reprimand, and a dishonorable discharge. As part of a pre-trial agreement, however, his prison term was reduced to 10 months.
In September 2018, Larrabee filed a petition for his conviction to be overturned on appeal based on the argument that he should have been tried as a civilian. However, the Supreme Court has denied that appeal, upholding the past standard that retirees are still subject to the UCMJ.

Unmentioned was the question of 'who' prosecutes. Often times the question is rather local law enforcement or military enforcement is to be employed. Unless unusual circumstances are involved the SOP is to defer to civil authority upon request. In 'civilized' areas, the question is who can render the stiffest punishment.
The individual is still protected against double jeopardy. The subject may not be prosecuted in both courts for the same crime. However, military law is not civil law. Something that is not a crime under civil law may be a crime under military law. Thus the associated events to the crime may fall under military law that are not covered or prosecuted under civil law.

If I am still subject to the UCMJ, why am I not eligible to all the benefits of active service? Why Medicare and Tricare-for-life as the supplement, (Which causes my wife and I to pay over $2500 a year in SS deductions, and $11 copays for meds, {so much for free healthcare for life, the 1968 promise when I enlisted in the USMC}) Why no legal, or travel benefits, etc. You can't have it both ways, either I'm subject to all the rules of active duty and get all the benefits, or I'm an annuitant, outside the umbrella of service? You can't be some of each? At least not in a place where honest contracts apply....

It effects 'retirees' not prior service personnel. As noted in the piece, retirees go into the retired reserve subject to recall. You are on standby. Retirees get a monthly check, get commissary and AAFES access, space availability on transportation, some medical coverage (certainly not like it was in the 60s and 70s, but neither do the families of active duty personnel). You just don't get orders shipping you to different 'exotic' locations every three years or so, you get to choose your career specialty and any job related management to work for or with. Till they call.
Back in the early 70s when I was added to the rolls, I signed a Regular Army accession. I read it. Said I could be recalled to active duty at anytime afterwards. Did you read your contract carefully?

As a retiree I understand I am subject to recall to active duty. My question is how as a member of the Retired Reserve I am subject to the UCMJ in my daily life in my retired status.

[Berkeleyside] UC Berkeley police have identified a man suspected of punching a right-wing activist on Sproul Plaza on Tuesday but he has not been arrested yet, nor have police released his name. No, of course not.
Videos of the incident went viral this week, after they were shared by conservative groups and figures calling the assault a leftist attack on students’ free speech. UC Berkeley has said, however, that neither the activist or the man suspected of punching him are students, and there is no indication the man is affiliated with any left-wing groups.
The most-viewed video begins in the middle of an altercation between two young men, one of whom was recruiting on Sproul Plaza for Turning Point USA, a national nonprofit that organizes right-wing college students.
In the video, the Turning Point recruiter is holding his phone out, appearing to film the other man. The man walks into the recruiter and swings his sweatshirt at him.
"Put your hands on me again, motherfucker," he says to the recruiter. "Racist little...bitch." He then punches the recruiter in the face and walks off, continuing to curse at him.
UCPD Sgt. Bryan Sato said Friday that the department received a report of battery around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, and is continuing to investigate the incident. UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof and UCPD sent a statement Friday afternoon announcing a suspect had been identified. His name was not released.
UCPD also sent out an alert Wednesday, saying two men had initially approached the Turning Point table, according to the report police received.
"A physical confrontation ensued when one of the two men slapped the phone out of the victim’s hand," the alert said. "The suspect then knocked over the table the victim was at and the two men struggled over the phone. During the incident, the suspect punched the victim several times causing injury to the victim’s eye and nose."
UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ sent a campus-wide statement Thursday about the incident.
"Let there be no mistake, we strongly condemn violence and harassment of any sort, for any reason," Christ said. "That sort of behavior is intolerable and has no place here. Our commitment to freedom of expression and belief is unwavering."
The videos have been shared by numerous right-wing accounts and groups, including the Berkeley College Republicans and Ben Shapiro, the conservative writer who spoke amid controversy and heavy security on campus last year. Turning Point’s video tweet has racked up a quarter of a million views, with the organization calling the footage evidence of "LEFTIST VIOLENCE ON CAMPUS!"
"A Leftist Thug Violently Assaulted A Conservative Student," Turning Point said in its tweet. "This Is How Violent & Intolerant The Left Has Become On Campus!" Numerous other conservative accounts promoted the same idea, resurfacing messages that were spread during frequent and often violent clashes between the far-right and far-left on campus and city streets in 2017 and 2018.
According to the libertarian publication Reason, the Turning Point recruiter is part of the Virginia-based Leadership Institute, a training program for conservative activists and students.
The recruiters had signs on Sproul Plaza that said, "Hate crime hoaxes hurt real victims" and "This is MAGA country," according to Reason.
Turning Point also provides training, funding and supplies to right-wing students on college campuses, claiming on its website to have a "a stronger, more organized presence than all of the left-wing campus groups combined." The organization maintains a "Professor Watchlist," targeting leftist faculty members. Four UC Berkeley professors are on the list.

Checkers at a West Bank crossing arrested a truck driver and his passenger on Sunday evening, after finding a gun and large amounts of ammunition hidden inside the vehicle, the Defense Ministry said.
The two men "aroused the suspicion" of a security officer at the Te’enim checkpoint between Israel and the northern West Bank, the ministry said in a statement.
During an initial search of the truck, checkers found a large number of bullets, packed in plastic bags. A police sapper who was then called to assist in the search also found a locally produced makeshift submachine gun, known as a Carlo, which had been hidden inside the side panels of the truck, the ministry said.
Both the driver and his passenger were placed under arrest and handed over to the Shin Bet security service for questioning. The gun and bullets were also given to the Shin Bet for study.
Sunday’s thwarted smuggling came as Israeli police announced that they had foiled an apparent plot to smuggle handguns into Israel from Jordan earlier this month, details of which were kept under gag order until this week.
On February 7, Border Police officers spotted the primary suspect, a Paleostinian man from the Nablus area, as he attempted to cross the border into northern Israel from Jordan wearing a large backpack.
The border guards, assisted by the Israel Defense Forces, arrested the man shortly after he crossed into the northern Jordan Valley and found inside his bag 37 pistols of various types, police said.
The police arrested three other Paleostinian suspects ‐ all from the Nablus area ‐ whom they believe were planning to pick up the suspect after he crossed the border.
"We noticed a few suspicious cars driving around the road and after a few hours of activity, using advanced means and special technologies, we spotted the suspect cross the Israeli border into Jordan and, a few hours later, we saw the suspect cross back into Israel with a bag on his back," the commander of the Border Police unit said in a statement.
"At that point, I ordered troops to arrest the suspect and the suspects that were in the cars. In the bag, we found 37 pistols of different types and we thereby succeeded in thwarting the smuggling," he said.

According to the document seen by Focus, Ammar met Amri a day before the attack, and took photos of the market in its aftermath, which he sent to an unknown phone number two hours later.
Ammar may even have helped the attacker to escape; CCTV footage mentioned in the document showed a man "with the appearance of Ben Ammar" hit a man on the head with a piece of wood in order to clear a path for the escaping attacker. The man is still in a coma now, Focus reported.
All this would be new evidence for the parliamentary committee tasked with investigating the attack, whose members have no knowledge of the video, though they did not rule out that it exists.

Speedy deportation was favored because the circumstances (Ben Ammar had assumed 12 identities in Germany) of the case would lay the foundation for 'incitement' i.e. for valid and devastating criticism of Merkel's political decisions.
Also it was revealed that, for unknown reasons, German federal police was ordered to stop looking for Ben Ammar from November 26 2016 onwards. This order was given at the request of the Berlin's state police's islamism department.

In overnight raids, Israeli forces detained Khader Adnan and Tariq Qa’adan in Arrabeh, southwest of Jenin.
The Shin Bet said the two men were arrested "for their activities with the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad," without elaborating on the nature of the suspicions against them.
Adnan, 40, has long been accused of being a spokesperson for the Iran-backed terror group. He has been arrested several times in recent years and served several prison sentences in connection with his work with the PIJ.
According to the Shin Bet, Qa’adan serves as a senior officer in the Gazoo-based PIJ’s West Bank wing.
The arrests came the night after the terror group released a video threatening to attack with missiles that can reach "from the Gazoo Strip to Tel Aviv and Netanya." The detention of Adnan and Qa’adan also followed a recent period of increased tension between Israel and Paleostinians over access to the Temple Mount.

In raids elsewhere in the West Bank overnight, Israeli troops arrested eight other Paleostinian suspects.
The military said the detainees were believed to be involved in terrorist activities, rock-throwing, and riots against Israeli civilians and security forces.
Israeli soldiers also found and confiscated a locally produced makeshift submachine gun, known as a Carlo, from the village of Beit Ummar, north of Hebron, the army said.
The 10 suspects were handed over to the Shin Bet for questioning.
The Paleostinian Islamic Jihad group made its threat about missiles reaching Tel Aviv and Beyond in a documentary film, broadcast on Iranian television on Sunday, that included footage of various projectiles, other weapons and missile launches.
The missile in question was made with help from PIJ’s patron, Iran, the group said. The Islamic Jihad, which is the second-largest terror organization in Gazoo after Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw,, said the "first missile" it launches toward Tel Aviv will be Iranian-made.
The documentary also included a claim by PIJ that it had developed precision-guided missiles.
"We managed to develop a missile that can reach from the Gazoo Strip to Tel Aviv and Netanya," a PIJ front man says in the clip, adding that its range could even extend beyond that.
The terror group already fired Iran-made missiles toward Tel Aviv more than six years ago, during Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012. In the new documentary, it said its engineers had succeeded in renewing its missile arsenal, which was largely destroyed in previous military confrontations.
The group warned it would "surprise" Israel "in response to any crime it makes in the future."
"The enemy’s act of stupidity against the Gazoo Strip and its residents will turn the occupied cities and communities into hell, God willing," the front man said. "The occupation has no place on the land of Paleostine. It will either withdraw from it or suffer harmful blows."
It was an apparent reference to the Israeli military’s response to large-scale protests organized weekly near the Israel-Gazoo border, during which many Paleostinians have been killed or maimed over the last 11 months, most recently a 15-year-old boy said by Hamas to have been shot on Friday.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the protests have seen thousands of Paleostinians rioting along the border, throwing rocks and bombs at Israeli soldiers and trying to breach the fence.

State Sen. John Moorlach's vision for a Golden State version of Germany's famed Autobahn ‐ a stretch of pavement where you can drive as fast you want ‐ is just the latest in a series of moves by states to put the pedal to the metal when it comes to speed limits. "It's the law!"
It's happening even as safety experts try to throw on the brakes on speeds that have now reached legal levels they view as somewhere between risky and downright dangerous.
"We have routinely seen studies that show when states raise speed limits, they can expect higher deaths," said Maureen Vogel, spokeswoman for the National Safety Council.
Seven states ‐ Idaho, Montana, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming ‐ have allowed 80 mph speed limits on select highways. One, Texas, has 85 mph on a section of State Highway 130. Legislatures have upped limits as cars have become safer and more powerful and the price of gas has tumbled, lowering concerns about the poor fuel mileage that high-speed driving can bring.
Yet the resulting higher speeds haven't made much of a statistical dent in highway deaths, the Governors Highway Safety Association reports.
In 2017, there were 9,717 speed-related deaths from among 37,133 total road fatalities. Those speed-related deaths were down 574 from 2016, were about the same as in 2015 and up 434 from 2014.
Back when the Autobahn had minimum rather than maximum speed limits, those who preferred driving more slowly stayed in the right lane, while the center lane went a bit faster, and in the left lane they’d drive at the maximum the car was capable of — whether just to pass or as a permanent position. If the car coming up behind in the left lane was going faster than oneself, one simply moved to the right for the few moments the other took to pass.

From what I've heard about German gas stations, maybe someone can confirm this, the cars get much more thorough service than at our self-serve quiki-marts. We have a lot of nice, fast cars out here but we have a lot of clunkers too and if the clunkers get out on the autobahn it's gonna be a problem...not to mention the dumbass drivers. The biggest problem we have is congestion and I don't see how this is gonna help. How can you go 100 mph when the dumbass five cars ahead of you is going 45? If our Highway Patrol was worth a damn they'd be on the lookout for slow pokes so they could pull them over and cite them for obstructing the flow of traffic. That'd help a lot. But the only time you see those guys is when there's an accident.
I'd settle for more lanes, NOT HOV lanes, so we could do 65. Most of the time on Interstate 5 it's so congested you're lucky if you can get up to 40.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have slowed down their offensive on the final pocket due to the presence of civilians, with just a scrap of the IS "caliphate" remaining from a territory that once spanned Syria and Iraq.
An AFP correspondent saw more than 46 trucks crammed with men, women and kiddies, approaching an SDF outpost, 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of the jihadist redoubt.
One vehicle was packed with women clad in black and men who covered their faces. Wounded people were also among the latest evacuees.
Holdout IS fighters and civilians, mostly relatives of jihadists, are trapped in less than half a square kilometre in the village of Baghouz near the Iraqi border.
The Kurdish-led SDF evacuated nearly 5,000 men, women and kiddies from the jihadist redoubt on Wednesday and Friday, but none over the weekend.
Earlier on Monday, SDF front man Mustefa Bali, told AFP that thousands remained inside the IS pocket.
"According to what we heard from those who have left, there are nearly 5,000 people still inside," Bali said.
At the SDF screening point outside the village, SDF fighters expressed hopes that Monday’s arrivals would be the last one.
The SDF screens those exiting at an outpost outside the village to weed out potential IS fighters.
After being vetted, women, children, and men not suspected of belonging to the bully boy group are transported north to the Kurdish-run camp of al-Hol, while suspected jihadists are sent to SDF-held detention centres.
The Observatory on Monday said that 1,400 people, mainly IS relatives, were secretly transported from orchards on the outskirts of Baghouz to neighbouring Iraq over the past 24 hours.
The Kurdish foreign affairs official did not confirm the transfer, but denied that the SDF was responsible.
"In principle, we do not hand over any person passing through our territories to Iraqi authorities or any other party," Omar said.
Such transfers can only happen if they were trucked from Baghouz "by another party", he explained, without specifying.
Baghdad on Sunday said the SDF have transferred 280 Iraqi nationals accused of fighting alongside IS to Iraqi authorities.
Fourteen suspected French jihadists were among those transferred, an Iraqi government source told AFP on Monday.
Hisham al-Hashemi, an Iraqi expert with intimate knowledge of the issue, said the transfer had taken place in coordination with the US-led coalition fighting IS.
CRITICISM OF INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE
The mass outpouring of men, women and kiddies from the IS foothold has overwhelmed the Kurdish-run al-Hol camp, six hours north of Baghouz.
"The international community is not currently taking responsibility towards the large number of people leaving the last IS pocket, especially children," Omar said.
The International Rescue Committee said Friday that new arrivals had pushed the camp’s population to over 45,000, exacerbating already dire conditions at the crammed facility.
At least 78 people, mostly children, have died on the way to the camp or shortly after arriving in recent weeks, the IRC said.
A warehouse fire on Friday caused by a gas cylinder kaboom "destroyed 200 family tents" and five larger ones and injured 16 workers, it said.
The UN’s humanitarian coordination office OCHA on Friday warned the camp was struggling to keep up with the flood of evacuees.

All Warren could muster, despite officially announcing her candidacy in Lawrence ‐ in the shadow of the Granite State ‐ was a disappointing 9 percent. No one else registered more than 6 percent.
Warren did score the highest in one poll category ‐ most polarizing. Twenty-six percent of those surveyed indicated they would not vote for her if she became the party’s nominee, the highest negative the field.
Warren’s poll numbers follow a discouraging pattern.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces on Monday handed over 14 foreign Islamic State militants to Iraq, a security source was quoted as saying.
Speaking to Iraqi website Baghdad Today, the source said that the IS fighters are of French nationality.
It was unclear if they will be deported to their country, the source added.

In a major breakthrough, the NIA on Monday said the owner of the vehicle used in the Pulwama terror attack has been identified and he has joined the Jaish-e-Mohammed terror outfit. An official front man said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a significant breakthrough in the investigation by identifying the vehicle and its owner after piecing together remnants of the car recovered from the scene of the blast.
The NIA Sherlocks, with the support of forensic and automobile experts, have been able to identify the vehicle used in the blast as a Maruti Eeco having chassis number MA3ERLF1SOO183735 and engine number G12BN164140. The vehicle was sold to Mohammed Jaleel Ahmed Haqani, a resident of Heaven Colony in Anantnag in 2011, and subsequently it changed hands seven times and finally reached Sajjad Bhat, a resident of Bijbeharain in South Kashmire.
The vehicle was purchased on February 4, the front man said, adding Sajjad was a student of Siraj-ul-Uloom, Shopian. Raids were conducted by a team of NIA and police at his house on Saturday but Sajjad was not present. He has reportedly joined Jaish-e-Mohammed and his photograph also appeared on social media where he is seen holding weapons.
Forty CRPF personnel were killed when a jacket wallah rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a bus carrying jawans in Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmire on February 14.

[DAWN] The Pak armed forces are fully prepared to give a "befitting response" to India if it resorts to any aggression or misadventure, the military's media wing said on Monday.
The statement was the outcome of a meeting between the army and air chiefs of the country, which followed a visit by Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa to the Air Headquarters in Islamabad.
During their meeting, Gen Bajwa and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan deliberated upon the operational environment in the region including "threat and response", said a tweet by Inter-Services Public Relations chief Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor.
"Pak Armed Forces are fully prepared for a befitting response to any Indian aggression or misadventure," the tweet said.

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces thwarted on Monday a plot by the Islamic State militant group to infiltrate into the country’s largest oil refinery Baiji in Salahuddin province.
“A group of Islamic State militants launched an armed attacked on the refinery, which is located 130km north of Baghdad, in the wee hours of Monday but the Popular Mobilization Forces were able to repel the attack,” eyewitnesses told the Arabic-language Al-Mawqif Al-Iraqi news website.
The attack left a number of civilians, who works at the oil refinery, wounded, the eyewitnesses added.
Government forces retook the facility and the city of Baiji in October 2015 after fierce clashes with the Islamic State jihadists but the severe damage kept the refinery closed.
Baiji was particularly hard hit by the devastation wreaked by Iraq’s campaign to reclaim its towns and cities from Islamic State.
In 2016, it was declared a disaster zone by the national parliament.
