Rape accused given ‘slow poison’ in food
Apparently the cons in Indian prisons have as little love for rapists as is found in American prisons...
NEW DELHI — A defendant on trial over a fatal gang-rape in New Delhi last December is critically ill after being attacked in prison, his lawyer said on Wednesday, weeks after the main accused died in the same jail.

Vinay Sharma was rushed to the state-run Lok Nayak Hospital in New Delhi on Tuesday with chest injuries after he was assaulted in Tihar Jail, lawyer A. P. Singh said, also alleging that his client’s food had been poisoned.

“He was vomiting blood and running a very high fever. He was also suffering from chest pains. He is in a very critical condition,” Singh said.

The chest pains came after Sharma, 20, was “beaten up and thrashed” by fellow inmates at the maximum-security jail, the lawyer added.
Beating and thrashing could certainly cause chest pain, yes...
He said the vomiting had been caused by the “slow poisoning” of his food over a period of several weeks.

“He was being given food mixed with poison since the start of this month.

“He was first admitted to the clinic inside the jail but was later moved to a city hospital. He was shifted again to another hospital when his condition worsened” on Tuesday, Singh said.

The head of the hospital refused to comment on the case, while there was no immediate reaction from authorities at Tihar.

One of Sharma’s co-defendants, bus driver Ram Singh, was found hanged in his cell in the same prison in March. Although an inquest ruled he had committed suicide his lawyers allege that he was murdered. Sharma is one of four adults still on trial for the murder and gang-rape of a 23-year-old student who was attacked on a bus on December 16. The victim died of her injuries in a Singapore hospital 13 days later.

A fifth defendant, who is aged 17, is being tried in a juvenile court. The defendants have all entered not-guilty pleas and their lawyers have accused police of torturing the defendants to obtain confessions.

Prosecutors say they have DNA evidence linking the defendants to the attack in which the student and a male companion were assaulted on a bus as it was driven around the city, having been picked up after a trip to the cinema. The case led to months of soul-searching over widespread sexual crime in India, and resulted in tougher laws to punish rapists.

OR by a severe beating(Including the stomach area) and a few hard hits there.

BUT, that doesn't dit the meme here, so, poison.(Until he's dead and the autopsy shows NO POISON, so, there will be NO autopsy)

Hong Kong Cries Fowl as Giant Rubber Duck Deflates
[An Nahar] The giant inflatable rubber duck which has attracted tens of thousands of visitors since it sailed into Hong Kong two weeks ago was reduced to a sad deflated disc Wednesday in the city's harbor.

Duck mania has gripped Hong Kong since its arrival, with locals and tourists flocking to catch a glimpse of the 16.5-meter-tall (54-feet) artwork, conceived by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman.

But those who made the trip to Victoria Harbor to see it on Wednesday morning were left disappointed as the wind had firmly been taken out of the duck's sails leaving it looking like a floating fried egg.

Organizers said that the duck had been deflated on Tuesday evening as part of scheduled maintenance work and that it would be towed to a shipyard on Wednesday for thorough checking.

"We scheduled a body check for these two days. If everything is fine we can inflate it as soon as possible and the public can appreciate it again," said Andrew Yeung, advertising and promotions manager for waterfront shopping mall Harbor City, which is organizing the duck exhibit.

Yeung added that the deflation had been announced on the Harbor City Facebook page on Tuesday night and also on signs around the piers.

"I know people are disappointed but we need to do the checking the overall condition. We don't want to upset everyone."

Yeung said he did not know when the duck would be re-inflated.

On a grey morning in Hong Kong tearful 45-year-old clerk Mirinna Chan reflected the feelings of visitors to the pier.

"The sky looks like it is crying for me -- I took time off from work just to see the duck, now it is just a blob," she told Agence La Belle France Presse. "It's really our childhood dream, because when we bathed as children, we would have one or two of the rubber ducks next to us."

Hong Kong has taken the bright yellow inflatable bird to its heart since it arrived on May 2 to cheering crowds, with stalls and shops throughout the city selling replicas and restaurants creating special duck dishes.

"The duck represents happiness for us," 30-year-old office assistant Lee Chun-shing told AFP.

"It was the highlight of this place, but now the highlight is deflated, of course everyone is disappointed," he said.

Chad arrests top war crimes suspect
[Al Ahram] Chad has locked away
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
a former political police chief suspected of torture and hundreds of politically motivated killings in the 1980s, the public prosecutors office said Wednesday.

Mahamat Djibrine was in charge of the DDS political police under then president Hissene Habre, who is accused of crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture during his eight years in power in Chad, where rights groups say some 40,000 people were killed under his rule.

Habre fled to Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
after he was ousted by incumbent President Idriss Deby in 1990.

"Mahamat Djbrine was arrested after DDS victims filed a lawsuit," general prosecutor Massingaral Kagah told AFP. "He is accused of torture, acts of barbarism and illegal detention."

The date of his arrest was not immediately known.

He could be extradited to Senegal, which was mandated by the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
to try Habre in July 2006 -- though the country stalled the process for years under former president Abdoulaye Wade.

Uganda threatens to punish media over succession reports
[Al Ahram] Uganda threatened Wednesday to penalise media for coverage of a purported plot aimed at stifling allegations that President Yoweri Museveni is grooming his son for power.

Speculation is growing that Museveni, in office since 1986, is lining up his son, Kainerugaba Muhoozi, to succeed him, a move that would test loyalties in Uganda's ruling elite.

Last week, a newspaper published a private letter by General David Sejusa calling for an investigation into claims of a plot "to assassinate people who disagree with this so-called family project of holding onto power in perpetuity."

The letter by Sejusa, one of Uganda's most senior officers and long regarded as close to Museveni, has sparked public debate on the sensitive and rarely aired question of whether Museveni, 68, will step down at the end of his term in 2016.

Godfrey Mutabazi, executive director of the state media regulator, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), said newspapers and radio stations had given the letter "undue" attention.

"Why give Sejusa headline after headline? ... On airwaves you hear nothing else except Sejusa," Mutabazi told Rooters.

"No, this obsessive coverage is not proper. They're alarming the public, causing insecurity and destabilising the country and we can't allow that ... We'll penalise this behaviour."

Mutabazi did not specify what penalties the UCC would impose. Ugandan journalists say such warnings often herald harassment by security agencies.

Don Wanyama, managing editor of the Daily Monitor, which published the letter, told Rooters that police detectives had interrogated him and two news hounds for over six hours Tuesday.

He said the police had demanded that the journalists hand over an original copy of Sejusa's letter and also disclose how they obtained it. They refused and were threatened with charges, but were later released.

Arabia
Saudi religious police boss condemns Twitter users
The head of Saudi Arabia's religious police has warned citizens against using Twitter, which is rising in popularity among Saudis.

Sheikh Abdul Latif Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh said anyone using social media sites - and especially Twitter - "has lost this world and his afterlife".

Twitter was the platform for those who did not have any platform, he said.

His remarks reflect Riyadh's concern that Saudis use Twitter to discuss sensitive political and other issues.

The conservative kingdom is believed to have seen the world's fastest increase in the uptake of Twitter, says the BBC's Sebastian Usher.
'Losing battle'

The sheikh's comments echo those of the imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca in April who used his sermon - seen by millions on TV - to warn that Twitter was a threat to national unity, our correspondent says.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia's grand mufti, the kingdom's most senior Muslim cleric, had dismissed Twitter users as "fools".

These rhetorical attacks are part of a concerted offensive by the Saudi establishment on the social network site, our correspondent says.

Many Saudis have seized on Twitter as the most immediate and effective way to open little windows into a traditionally opaque society.

Recent protests in the Eastern Province have been tweeted and images of human rights activists on trial have been uploaded directly from courtrooms, challenging many taboos.

In response, the authorities have mooted moves that could inhibit Twitter users by linking their online accounts to their Saudi ID numbers.

A number of web activists have been detained, including at least one for the alleged apostasy, a charge that could carry the death penalty.

However, some elements of the Saudi elite have also warned against moving too hard on social network users.

Billionaire businessman Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, who presents himself as a reformist, has described attempts to restrict social media as a losing battle.

Bangladesh
3 killed in gunfight
[Bangla Daily Star] At least three people, including a UP chairman, were killed and 25 others injured in a battle for supremacy between two groups of people at Jamirtoli village in Laxmipur Sadar upazila yesterday.

The dear departed were identified as Nur Hossain Shamim, 35, Dattapara Union Gay Pareehad chairman, his bodyguard Delwar Hossain, 30, and one villager Mohammedan Uddin, 40.

Quoting locals, Altaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Laxmipur Sadar Police Station, said there had been a longstanding conflict between Asaduzzaman Babul of Jamirtoli village and UP Chairman Nur Hossain Shamim.

Following the conflict, supporters of the two groups clashed and traded bullets yesterday noon.

At one stage, Shamim shot Mohammedan Uddin, who is a loyal to Asaduzzaman Babul, dead. Several people received bullets.

Later, maimed Shamim and his bodyguard Delwar took shelter in a house of Jamirtoli village.

The locals caught them and beat them to death, added the police officer.

Bullet-hit Lokman, Sohag, Azad, Rakib, Jamal, Kamal, Shahid, Sumon, and Shanto were admitted to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital in a critical condition.

On information, police rushed to the spot and fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.

Additional police have been deployed in and around the area to ward off any trouble.

Police also held nine people in this connection.

Life term for 46 Purbo Banglars
[Bangla Daily Star] A Speedy Trial Tribunal of Rajshahi yesterday sentenced life term imprisonment to 46 operatives of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party
...the Proletarian Party of East Bengal, a Maoist party that has seen better days. It supported independence in 1971 and has periodic shootouts and fisticuffs with the Bangla Jamaat-e-Islami, but has fallen on hard times, with many of its leaders rubbed out by the RAB or indignant citizenry. It is also subject to factionalism, to the extent that it may have more factions than it has actual members...
for killing six people at Atrai upazila in Naogaon in 2003.

Judge Ekramul Haque Chowdhury fined the convicts Tk 30,000 each, in default, they would have to suffer one year of imprisonment more, said public prosecutor Entajul Haque.

Of the convicts, 28 were present on the dock during the verdict whereas 18 remained absconding.

The court, however, acquitted 16 accused in the case.

A band of operatives of the PBCP (Red Flag) took part in a killing mission at two houses at Naidighi village in the upazila on April 24, 2003 and killed Jahangir Hossain, Sukbor Hossain, Abdul Jabbar, Shahjahan, Mojammel Haque and Biddyut.

Jahangir's father filed a murder case with Atrai Police Station on the following day accusing 150 unnamed PBCP members.

Police submitted a charge sheet in the case against 63 people on September 30, 2004.

The judge examined 25 prosecution witnesses and pieces of evidence before reaching the verdict yesterday.

One of the accused could not be tried following his death during the trial process.

The plaintiff, Jahangir's father, had already expired.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
Abdul Kuddus, elder brother of victims Sahajahan and Biddyut, in his reaction said they had expected the killers to walk the gallows. He expressed his satisfaction.

PP Entajul said the victims' rivals had hired the PBCP outlaws for the murder, as there was a longstanding conflict over the lease of some water bodies in the village.

Prior to the murder, the PBCP men had also threatened the victims to face dire consequences for being in disputes with Akkas, Ekhlas and Robiul Alam of the village, he added.

The victims took cautionary measures following the threat and started living in a hidden chamber inside their houses.

On the fateful day, the PBCP men, carrying machetes and cleavers, attacked Jahangir's house first around 3:00am and killed him by slitting his throat.

They then moved on to an adjacent house and killed the remaining victims in the similar fashion after getting them out from the hiding place.

The PBCP members also rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud while fleeing the scene.

Britain
Cameron Faces Parliament Showdown over EU Referendum
[An Nahar] British Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
faced a showdown with eurosceptic rebels on Wednesday in a parliamentary vote over his plans for a referendum on membership of the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
.
President Obama has given him advice on the subject, so the science is settled.
Up to 100 disgruntled backbenchers from Cameron's Conservative party are set to vote for a motion expressing "regret" that the coalition government has failed to enshrine in law the promise to hold an in/out referendum.

The vote is non-binding, but if the rebellion is as big as expected it will deal a fresh blow to Cameron's authority and renew concerns among Britannia's international partners and investors about its position in the EU.

The Conservative rift is bad news for the party two years before a general election, and a reminder of how the issue of Europe led to the downfall of late former prime minister Margaret Thatcher and undermined her successor John Major in the 1990s.

Cameron, who will miss the vote because he is visiting the United States, has insisted he is "profoundly relaxed" about it. He has said his MPs have a free vote but ministers must vote against or abstain.

Parliamentary speaker John Bercow approved the motion earlier Wednesday and allowed it to be the subject of a vote.

It expresses regret that legislation promising a referendum was not included in last week's Queen's Speech, in which the government set out its program for the year.

Cameron argues that he wants to renegotiate the conditions of Britannia's membership of the EU and then, if he is returned to power in the 2015 general election, put the question to the people in a referendum by the end of 2017.

White House Backs Laws to Protect Press Sources
[An Nahar] The White House threw its weight Wednesday behind a bid to pass a law to strengthen journalists' rights to protect their sources, amid controversy over the seizure of a news agency's phone records.

to press his support for the bill.

"We are glad to see that that legislation will be reintroduced, because he believes strongly that we need to provide the protections to the media that this legislation would do," Carney told news hounds.

This week's revelation that Sherlocks probing alleged leaks of secret or classified information had secretly obtained phone records for numbers used by News Agency that Dare Not be Named news hounds triggered a political firestorm.

Several commentators and a coalition of media organizations accused Obama's administration of trampling on press freedoms in its pursuit of government leaks and whistleblowers.

Who and how decides what/who is a journalist & journalism? Would Joe Citizen posting on Twitter or FB or a blog be shielded if one found out about mal or misfeasance by the elite?

India-Pakistan
ECP moves against alleged rigging in polls
[Pak Daily Times] The Election Commission of Pakistain (ECP) is mulling a proposal to verify thumbprints on ballot papers in the constituencies where rigging has been alleged.

According to media reports, the ECP has summoned National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) chairman for consultation on the matter and to finalise a strategy. ECP sources say that the commission has received several applications for verification of thumbprints, which prompted the electoral body to take up the proposal for consideration. On the other hand, NADRA has expressed its willingness to verification of thumb impression of voters of any constituency where election results have been disputed, but only upon directions of the election commission.

Meanwhile,
...back at the alley, Bugs Moroni was holding Slats from behind while his brother Greasy Thumb was pounding his face into paste ...
the ECP has announced re-elections on May 21 at certain polling stations of three National Assembly and two provincial assembly constituencies. Re-elections would be held in NA 46 tribal area, NA 269 Khuzdar, NA 41 tribal area, PK 71 Bannu and PK 72 Bannu-II on May 21. Also, with slight difference in demands, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
and Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) have agreed to re-election in the disputed constituency of NA-250. The ECP acknowledged the complaints of both the political parties who had alleged rigging and hijacking of political activities at several polling stations of the constituency.

PTI and Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
had raised the issue after other parties joined the chorus of rigging. However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
the difference between PTI and MQM is the constituencies where they have demanded re-polling. PTI is demanding re-election all over Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
while the MQM wants them in NA-250 only. The ECP has directed re-election in NA-250 constituency on May 19 at 43 polling stations of the area under the supervision of army.

PTI's rigging allegations baseless, says PML-N
[Pak Daily Times] PML-N leaders have rejected PTI allegations of election rigging as baseless, saying that if the leaders of "Imran's party" have any evidence of rigging, then they should produce it before the election commission instead of merely protesting.

The leaders including Zaeem Ahmad Qadri, Mian Naseer Ahmad and others were addressing a presser at the DHA Office of Khawaja Saad Rafiq, who was a National Assembly candidate from NA-125.

They said the PTI was only focusing on DHA polling station, but in the constituency of NA-125 there are several other polling stations including many villages where PML-N have swept in the general election. They said the Lahore High Court has already rejected the petition filed by the losing candidate Hamid Khan, throwing allegations of rigging the constituency.

"People have elected PML-N candidate Khawaja Saad Rafiq on National Assembly seat and also elected Zaeem Ahmad Qadri and Mian Naseer Ahmad on provincial assembly seats because of their work in the constituency as well as in Punjab." They also said that their party built two new colleges and also renovated around 50 schools in the NA-125 constituency.

The PML-N leaders criticised PTI's protest in DHA, saying that the party should accept the mandate of the people who have elected PML-N with a heavy majority. They said that Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five...
should ask the participants of the protest to go back home because other people of the city are disturbed and participants themselves could become a target of terrorists.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Paleos Love KFC
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (CBS Cleveland) - A new company has emerged in the Middle East that smuggles fast food from an Egyptian Kentucky Fried Chicken to Gaza residents through a tunnel.

People in the conflicted region can now satisfy cravings for food from the Louisville-based fast food headquarters by ordering through a company that charges the American equivalent of $30 for smugglers to bring the greasy goods from Al-Arish in Egypt to the doorsteps of hungry customers.

Deliveries take approximately three hours, according to the Christian Science Monitor. But for those who use the business, the end result is worth the wait.

More signs of gas found at offshore drilling site
Significant signs of natural gas were discovered Wednesday at the Karish 1 drilling platform, off the coast of Nahariya.
It gets better and better for the Israelis. There's enough gas in their part of the eastern Med to make them energy independent, and maybe generate some significant cash from the Europeans. Then we'll see how eager the Euros are to turn the whole area over to the Paleos.
Karish 1 is owned in part by business magnate Yitzhak Tshuva, who is also the controlling shareholder of the offshore Tamar field from which Israel started pumping natural gas in March. The Tamar deposit, which was discovered in 2009 approximately 90 kilometers (56 miles) west of Haifa, holds an estimated 8.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

According to discoveries made at the site in recent months, the Karish deposit could contain as much as two trillion cubic feet of natural gas, about one-fourth of the amount of gas contained in Tamar.

On Wednesday evening, Energy and Water Minister Silvan Shalom lauded the announcement as “praiseworthy,” adding that the discovery would help Israel develop its energy market and economy.

“Increasing the supply of natural gas in the deposits will allow us to supply more natural gas to the local market and increase the natural revenue, which will be utilized by investing in education, welfare, health, the Negev and the Galilee, and the citizens of Israel.”

The gas from Tamar is expected to help meet Israel’s energy needs for the next 20 years, and will save the economy some NIS 13 billion ($3.5 billion) per year.

In addition to Tamar, in 2010 an even larger deposit, Leviathan — which boasts an estimated 16-18 trillion cubic feet of gas — was discovered 130 kilometers (81 miles) west of Haifa. It is expected to become operational in 2016, at which time Israel expects to begin exporting natural gas.

Well, the Europeans are "sane" enough not to put the money in Euro banks and investment schemes. The recent upturn in Wall Street is in some circles, being attributed to a corresponding upturn in European investment. I'm sure the recent Cyprus Banking deposit confiscation incident has had little impact on depositor decision making.
