Cell 'Plotted Attacks' on U.S., French Missions in Egypt
[An Nahar] An al-Qaeda-linked cell broken up in Egypt at the weekend planned to bomb the U.S. and French embassies in Cairo, state news agency MENA quoted Sherlocks as saying on Wednesday.

"The accused planned suicide boom-mobileings outside the embassies of La Belle France and the United States in Egypt," MENA said

In the case of the French mission, the motive was to register a protest "against French military intervention in Mali," Sherlocks were quoted as saying.

The news agency did not say why the American embassy was to be targeted.

On Saturday, Egyptian Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim said police had tossed in the clink
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
three members of a "terror cell" involved in a transnational plot to bomb a Western embassy and other targets.

Ibrahim said they were captured with 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of fertilizer, and a computer containing instructions on bomb-making.

MENA said the three were Egyptian and quoted security sources as saying they had been among prisoners who managed to escape from prison during the 2011 uprising against former president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...

Two of the suspects had been extradited in 2009, one from Algeria and the other from Iran, the agency said.

The three admitted having been in contact with al-Qaeda but denied plotting any attacks, the agency added.

On Saturday, Ibrahim said they had been in touch with Kurdi Dawud al-Assadi who is "the head of al-Qaeda in some west Asian countries."

One of them associated with al-Qaeda members in Algeria and received training from the loose-knit hard boy organization in Pakistain and Iran, Ibrahim said.

The suspects' lawyer said he attended their questioning on Saturday and claimed the prosecution had no evidence, including disputing that they were caught with explosives.

"This is just a case of the security apparatus trying to assert its worth," Mamduh Ismail told Agence La Belle France Presse.

MENA said on Saturday prosecutors had ordered two of the suspects, from the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, tossed in the clink
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
for questioning for a renewable 15-day period, and that the third was under house arrest.

Two of the suspects had also traveled to Mali, where French troops battled al-Qaeda-inspired hard boys, MENA reported.

According to Ibrahim, Assadi had instructed the suspects to coordinate with two other alleged faceless myrmidons before their capture last October after a firefight that killed a gunman in a Cairo apartment.

Those two, also alleged to have al-Qaeda links, are now on trial.

Fuad Allam, a retired interior ministry general who helped crack down on Islamist faceless myrmidons in the 1980s, said he believed faceless myrmidons identifying with al-Qaeda have begun to coalesce after the Arab Spring uprisings.

"The terror cells (in the region) are beginning to gather, they seem to have an organization."

One of the suspects arrested in October allegedly had links to an attack last September 11 on the U.S. consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi that killed ambassador Chris Stevens.

Egypt has previously announced arresting al-Qaeda-linked faceless myrmidons in the country, which has seen a low-level Islamist insurgency and hard boy attacks on tourist sites over the past three decades.

Some veteran Egyptian Islamist faceless myrmidons are now in Al-Qaeda's leadership. Most prominent is Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
, who heads the hard boy organization founded by the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now beyond all cares and woe...
Others had been tossed in the clink
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
and recanted violence before their release following the 2011 uprising.

Students protest against 'state of chaos' in Benghazi
[Libya Herald] Students at the University of Benghazi staged a protest yesterday against what they said was a state of chaos and absence of security in the city.

The protest, which took place on the university campus, was a reaction to the car kaboom near Benghazi's Jala hospital on Monday, according to Libyan news agency LANA. The blast was originally reported to be a car-bomb but the Ministry of Defence has since said that forensic evidence points to the accidental kaboom of a vehicle transporting tank ammunition.

The students called for the government to immediately activate the police service to restore safety and security to streets. Banners bearing anti-Chief of Staff Major General Yusef Mangoush slogans were apparently raised at the protest.

TV presenter slapped with fine for insulting Brotherhood's El-Erian
[Al Ahram] The 6 October Misdemeanour Court on Wednesday fined television host Jihan Mansour LE10,000 for "insulting" and "defaming" Essam El-Erian, vice president of the Moslem Brüderbund's Freedom and Justice Party.

The court ordered Mansour to pay LE10,000
...about US$1,500, in case anyone wonders...
in "compensation" to the veteran Moslem Brüderbund member.

Last October, El-Erian accused the Dream TV host of taking money to insult him and the Brotherhood on her television programme.

The crisis with Mansour began last year when she produced an episode of her show, Sabahak Ya Masr ('Good Morning Egypt'), following festivities in Tahrir Square during which Brotherhood members reportedly attacked anti-government protesters.

El-Erian called the show on air to comment on the accusations, asserting that Mansour had been paid to attack the Islamist group.

In the same show, Mansour threatened to take legal action against El-Erian, accusing the leading Brotherhood figure of speaking to her in "an unprofessional manner."

Christian teacher faces blasphemy charges in Egypt
CAIRO — Egypt’s prosecutors on Tuesday referred a Christian schoolteacher to trial on charges of blasphemy, judicial sources said. Dimiana Abdel Nour, who was arrested on Wednesday, was accused by her Muslim students’ parents of blasphemy.

Alongside the political and economic turmoil Egypt has endured since Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in February 2011, tensions have risen between Muslims and Christians, especially since the election of President Mohammed Mursi in June. Christians make up about 10 per cent of Egypt’s 84 million people and have complained that the authorities have failed to protect them since Mubarak was ousted, giving radical Islamists a free hand.

Abdel Nour will appear in a court in Luxor next Tuesday, a judicial source said. She was free on bail of 20 thousand Egyptian pounds ($2,900) pending her trial.

‘Imams promote grooming rings’, Muslim leader claims
Dr Taj Hargey, imam of the Oxford Islamic Congregation, said race and religion were inextricably linked to the recent spate of grooming rings in which Muslim men have targeted under-age white girls.

Earlier this week seven members of a child sex ring from Oxford were found guilty of forcing under age girls to commit acts of "extreme depravity".

Their victims, aged between 11 and 15, were groomed and plied with alcohol and drugs before being sexually assaulted and forced into prostitution. They targeted "out of control" teenagers.

Dr Hargey said that the case brought shame on the city and the community and is a set back for cross community harmony.

But worse still is the refusal to face up to its realities, he wrote in the Daily Mail.

In retrospect, Bush's decision to deny late model F-16's to Taiwan may have been a wise one. In a fight over Okinawa, I expect JSDF and USAF bombing runs over Taiwan, which is quite a shift from the WWII history of the Japanese and US air services facing off against each other.

UN: 14 Iranian exiles moved from Iraq to Albania
The first group of exiles from an Iranian opposition group has moved to Albania from a former U.S. military base near Baghdad as part of a relocation process, the United Nations mission to Iraq said Thursday.

In a statement, U.N. envoy Martin Kobler said 14 members of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq arrived in Albania late Wednesday, the first of 210 set to travel to new homes in Albania.

Last year about 3,000 MEK exiles were moved from their decades-long home in northeastern Iraq to a refugee camp outside Baghdad at the former U.S. base, part of an effort to ensure their peaceful departure from Iraq.

The MEK, or the People's Mujahedeen of Iran, opposes Tehran's clerical regime. It carried out assassinations and bombings in Iran until renouncing violence in 2001. Several thousand of its members were given sanctuary in Iraq by dictator Saddam Hussein, who was deposed in 2003.

Chaos in Turkey as police use tear gas and water cannons to put down rioters protesting over Syr
Dozens of demonstrators were faced with tear gas and water cannons by police in Istanbul today as they protested against the Turkish government's policy towards Syria.

Two groups of protesters were marching to Besiktas district near the Dolmabahce Palace on the European side of the city when officers blocked their path, reports the state-run Anatolia News Agency.

Some of the demonstrators, said to be mainly students, tried to climb barriers while police used water cannons and tear gas on the groups. Others took refuge in the historic Dolmabahce Mosque.

The crackdown followed similar scenes in Ankara yesterday, where clashes between students and security forces using cannons and gas saw 30 arrested and two injured.

Crowds in Istanbul and Ankara were protesting against prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's funding and support for the Syrian rebels against President Bashar Assad.

Syria has accused the Turkish government of facilitating the flow of arms, explosives, vehicles, fighters and money to rebels across the border.

Turkey, a Nato member, has hosted opposition leaders, rebel commanders and thousands of refugees since the Syrian civil war began.

#1  I wonder how much money actually gets to the rebels. This is a cash cow for Turkey. Not near enough with all their economic problems. Top heavy like Putin having about 2 billion himself. The oil business has been very good for Russia. Europe will need every drop of oil and gas next year if mini ice age hits next year as the Russians predict. Stable Syria as soon as possible is very necessary.

Boston Marathon bombings suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev wrote message in boat: report
Accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was found hiding in a boat days after the blasts, left a handwritten message describing the attack as retribution for U.S. wars in Muslim countries, CBS News reported on Thursday.

The CBS News report, citing anonymous sources, said that Tsarnaev used a pen to write the message on an interior wall of the boat, where police found him bleeding from gunshot wounds four days after the April 15 bombing.

The note summed up with the idea that “when you attack one Muslim, you attack all Muslims,” CBS News reported.

"Basically, the note says ... the bombings were retribution for the US crimes against Muslims in places like Iraq and Afghanistan and that the victims of the Boston bombing were 'collateral damage,' the same way innocent victims have been collateral damage in US wars around the world," said CBS News reporter John Miller, who is a former spokesman for the FBI.

Seven cited for trespassing at Quabbin Reservoir
[FoxNews] Massachusetts state police say they and the FBI are investigating a trespassing incident at the Quabbin Reservoir but have no evidence of terrorism. The central Massachusetts reservoir supplies drinking water to Boston.

State Police front man David Procopio says Tuesday night that a trooper saw two cars parked at a reservoir park entrance at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, then saw five young men and two young women walking toward them from the reservoir.

Procopio said they are from Pakistain, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and Singapore with addresses in Amherst, Cambridge, Sunderland and Northampton, and New York City. He said law enforcement databases show no warrants, detainers or advisories on them.

The men told police they are recently graduated chemical engineers curious about the reservoir.

The trooper determined the people were trespassing and in violation of the no trespassing law and requested backup. Officers arrived on scene and checked the cars, park area, and the people and did not find any items out of place or of criminal nature.

Following an investigation, the individuals were allowed to leave as there was no evidence of any criminal activity or tampering with the water system; however, the individuals will be summonsed to court for the offense of trespassing.

The investigation is ongoing.
CBS-Boston adds:
Routine checks of public water supplies have been increased following the incident.

...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) Chairman Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems...
has given three days' ultimatum to the Election Commission of Pakistain (ECP) to probe rigging in the general elections otherwise his party would launch protests across the country against the ECP.

Imran issued the warning through video-link in a presser held at a local hotel on Wednesday. He further said that PTI believes in continuation of democratic process and would cooperate with all political forces. He said that the PTI will play the role of effective and responsible opposition in parliament and would protect the rights of the people. He added that the ECP has failed to meet the expectations of the masses.

The PTI chairman said that NADRA has all the resources to verify the voters' lists. "Rigging has been reported from 25 constituencies across the country," he said, adding that it was the duty of the election commission to listen to the complaints of the people, otherwise they would lose faith in the democratic process. Imran further said that voter turnout in 2008 elections was 44 percent and 38 percent in 2002, but in the current general election people had came out and voted for change.

He said that the people are themselves protesting against rigging in the country and this was not a PTI decision. "We demand that ECP investigate rigging allegations in 25 constituencies, including NA-122 and NA-125," Imran said. He also asked the election commission to order recounting with thumb impression verification in six National Assembly constituencies, NA 122, 125, 110, 57, 154 and 239. He said that the PTI will form government in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
and would make it a model province. Imran admitted that "we have strong political differences with PML-N but we would work with all parties in the largest interest of the nation, especially on terrorism and other major issues".

The PTI chairman said, "It is the responsibility of the (election) commission to ensure free and fair elections. We have decided to move ahead to solve the problems faced by the country despite having differences." Imran said he has spoken to army chief General Ashfaq Kayani
... four star general, current Chief of Army Staff of the Mighty Pak Army. Kayani is the former Director General of ISI...
in this regard. The PTI, he assured, would play the role of a genuine opposition in the National Assembly. Imran vowed to cooperate with incoming prime minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
on terrorism and other major challenges. "We have decided that despite severe differences that we have, we will work together to resolve major national problems including terrorism," he said in his video message aired during the presser.

He harshly criticised Nawaz and the PML-N during the campaign for last Saturday's general election and had vowed to go into opposition. Nawaz pledged to work with Imran for the good of the country, after visiting the former cricket star in hospital on Tuesday. Imran is credited with helping to inspire 60 percent turnout at the polls, having galvanised the youth and urban middle class in particular with promises to end corruption, introduce tax reform and stand up to the Americans.

Editors booked over banned outfit claim
[Pak Daily Times] Police has registered an FIR against the newspaper editors and publishers who published the claim of a banned outfit that it had carried out the kaboom at the residence of Balochistan

The case has been registered on the complaint of the Quetta City Police Station SHO, under the anti-terrorism act. The charges include contempt of court, as the provincial high court had barred newspapers and media organizations from publishing and telecasting the statements/claims of the banned outfits.

The media took the common stand that its members are receiving threats from the banned outfits and no institution of the country is capable of defending the lives of newsmen, including editors and publishers. The media organizations, including the APNS, CPNE and PFUJ, and human rights

organizations are expected to take a common stand on the issue once again.

Islamists get less than 5pc votes in twin cities
[Dawn] Islamists could obtain only 4.72 per cent votes in the nine National Assembly seats of Rawalpindi district and the federal capital in the May 11 elections.

Out of the 1.86 million votes polled for the two National Assembly seats of Islamabad and seven Rawalpindi district, the Islamic and sect-based parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
and the JUI-F, managed to bag only 88,101 votes.

The trend showing that Paks do not vote for religious elements or any party representing their sect has been taken as a welcome sign by many even in the religious circles.

"I am happy to see that people vote for the mainstream without considerations to their religion or sect," said Maulana Tahir Ashrafi, the chief of Pakistain Ulema Council.

"People have rejected sectarianism and extremism. Look at Jhang, the centre of Sipah-e-Sahaba. The PML-N candidate has won there," he said.

The two primarily sect-based groups active in the arena of Rawalpindi and Islamabad in the elections 2013 were the Shia Majlis Wahdat Moslemeen (MWM), the newest entrant into politics as it got itself registered only in February 2013.

The other mainly sect-based group was the Muttahida Deeni Mahaz (MDM), which was the only electoral alliance in the general elections, led by Maulana Samiul Haq
...the Godfather of the Taliban, leader of his own faction of the JUI. Known as Mullah Sandwich for his habit of having two young boys at a time...
, chief of his own faction of Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spends more time running his madrassah. Both branches sponsor branches of the Taliban, though with plausible deniability...

The MDM comprised five small groups belonging to the Deobandi school of thought, including Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat
...which is the false nose and plastic mustache of the murderous banned extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain, whatcha might call the political wing of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi...
(ASWJ), the reincarnation of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain
...a Sunni Deobandi organization, a formerly registered Pak political party, established in the early 1980s in Jhang by Maulana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi. Its stated goal is to oppose Shia influence in Pakistain. They're not too big on Brelvis, either. Or Christians. Or anybody else who's not them. The organization was banned in 2002 as a terrorist organization, but somehow it keeps ticking along, piling up the corpse counts...

Both the groups were confident of a respectable finish in the elections.

"Islam has been and will remain the most important aspect of Pak society and you can see that only the Islamists can bring a change in the system which currently is based on exploitation and interest (riba)," Maulana Samiul Haq had told Dawn prior to the elections.

Among the most decorated and confident candidates of the MDM was Maulana Mohammad Ishtiaq Abbasi from PP-1 Murree, because of his religious standing in the area and his sound background. He belongs to the local majority Abbasi clan.

Due to sound financial standing, he was also the only provincial assembly candidate in the country to have aired his own paid advertisements on TV channels.

Despite all these cards and the expected support from the network of Madressahs in the area, Ishtiaq Abbasi of the MDM obtained only 13,757 votes, making him finish at the fourth slot way behind 21,433 of the PTI candidate, 23,498 of the PML-Q and 51,108 of the winning PML-N.

Besides, the combined votes of MDM with other religious parties, including the JI and the Jamaat Ulema-e-Pakistain (Noorani), a Barelvi group, come to 20,462, putting it at number four.

For NA-50, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi of the PML-N, the winner, bagged 133,906 votes followed by 46,819 (PTI) and 44,713 (PPP).

But the four candidates each from the two Barelvi-based small parties (Markazi Jamaat Mushaikh Pakistain and Pakistain Sunni Tehrik
...formed in Karachi in 1992 under by Muhammad Saleem Qadri. It quickly fell to trading fisticuffs and assassinations with the MQM and the Sipah-e-Sahaba, with at least a half dozen of its major leaders rubbed out. Sunni Tehreek arose to become the primary opposition to the Deobandi Binori Mosque, headed by Nizamuddin Shamzai, who was eventually bumped off by person or persons unknown. ST's current leadership has heavily criticized the Deobandi Jihadi leaders, accusing them of being sponsored by Indian Intelligence agencies as well as involvement in terrorist activities...
), JI and JUI-F got a total of 16,324 votes.

"The voters are mature and people go for party-based politics, they understand different things," Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said, cautiously choosing his words not to criticise the religious elements.

Meanwhile,
...back at the laboratory the smoke and fumes had dispersed, to reveal an ominous sight...
the ASWJ blamed rigging by the PML- N for their poor performance and presented justifications for the low vote cast.

"We are a new entrant in politics in this region and the people were not well aware of our presence," said Tayyab Hydri, a front man for ASWJ.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian factions agree to reconcile
After Egyptian-mediated talks in Cairo, the two main Palestinian factions announced yesterday that they would form a new unity government within three months, which would end the six-year split between them. But previous such agreements have run into obstacles that prevented their implementation. Here's a look at the challenges involved in Palestinian reconciliation.

4 soldiers injured as Palestinians mark Nakba Day
Services and protests were held across the West Bank Wednesday to commemorate the 65th Nakba Day, the "catastrophe" of Palestinian displacement resulting from the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
No mention that they brought it on themselves, of course...
Sirens blared at noon for 65 seconds, in line with the 65th year of commemoration, and services were held in Ramallah, Nablus, Tulkarem, Qalqilya, Bethlehem, Jericho, and other locations. Israeli police on horseback dispersed hundreds of Palestinian protesters in east Jerusalem. In Ramallah, thousands marched from the grave of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to the city center. Many wore black in a sign of mourning, holding Palestinian flags and large keys symbolizing the homes they left behind.

"The right of return will not die," chanted the protesters, referring to the demand for millions of descendants of Palestinians who lived in what is today Israel to return to their homes -- a move that would spell the end of the Jewish state. Schools closed at midday and parents brought their children to the demonstration.
Of course it can't die. The UNHCR and UNRWA would both be put out of business. We certainly can't have that...
Rallies were also held in other cities across the West Bank and smaller protests were held in Gaza, which has been under control of the Hamas terror group since it ousted Palestinian Fatah forces in the territory in 2007. About a thousand marched to the UN headquarters in Gaza City.

"We shall return. We will never give up or compromise over our land," chanted the marchers, members of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian factions.
They then rolled their eyes, grimaced most fiercely and made faces...
The Israeli military said Palestinian protesters across the West Bank threw rocks at soldiers who responded with tear gas. Palestinians hurled a fire bomb at a military vehicle near Hebron, causing it to overturn, injuring four soldiers.

In east Jerusalem, Israeli police used water cannon and officers on horseback to disperse an "illegal march," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. Fourteen protesters were arrested, as was a Palestinian suspected of attacking a Jewish man as he walked near the Old City, he said.

In Ramallah, the Palestinian Authority set up a stage near Manara Square in the center of the city, where artists performed traditional dances and songs.

Demonstrators also protested outside Ofer Prison, where many Palestinian security prisoners are held. The site is a common spot for mass rallies.

Several people were injured, including medics, after the IDF fired tear gas and rubber bullets during confrontations with protesters, according to reports on social media sites.

Dozens of Palestinians also threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli security forces in Bitunia and Qalandiya, north of Jerusalem. The IDF retaliated by using riot dispersal techniques and no one was injured, Israel Radio reported.
Predictably the Israelis are criticized for firing rubber bullets but the rock-throwing Paleos get a pass...

#1  An interesting background piece on the origins of the Nakba:

But just three short paragraphs into the Wikipedia article [on Nakba Day] comes this intriguing historical titbit: “Prior to its adoption by the Palestinian nationalist movement, the ‘Year of the Catastrophe’ among Arabs referred to 1920, when European colonial powers partitioned the Ottoman Empire into a series of separate states along lines of their own choosing”.

The footnote there quotes The Arab awakening: the story of the Arab national movement by George Antonius: “The year 1920 has an evil name in Arab annals: it is referred to as the Year of the Catastrophe (cĀm al-Nakba). It saw the first armed risings that occurred in protest against the post-War settlement imposed by the Allies on the Arab countries. In that year, serious outbreaks took place in Syria, Palestine, and Iraq”.

So the Israelis should collect up the rocks that are thrown at them, put them in cannons, and 'throw' them back.

From Petrodollar To Petrogold: The US Is Now Trying To Cut Off Iran's Access To Gold
The US is moving to broaden its 'blockade' efforts of Iran to the movement of pure gold into the Islamic Republic. The US-led embargo of Iranian crude succeeded in slowing the flow of petrodollars into the nation but as Foreign Affairs committee chairman Edward Cohen remarked, there is "no question that there is gold going from Turkey to Iran." While the official line from US elite such as Bernanke remains that 'gold is not money' it appears that increasingly other nations would disagree, as Cohen admitted, "in large measure what we're seeing is private Iranian citizens buying gold as a protection against the falling value of Iran's currency." It would seem somewhat self-evident that the US is admitting, by attempting to embargo this gold flow, that outside the US, the Dollar is becoming increasingly irrelevant (see China's gold demand); and that for many countries the petrodollar no longer exists, having been replaced by 'Petrogold'.

Kerry, Russian foreign minister meet on Syria
[Pak Daily Times] US Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met late on Tuesday for a discussion focused on the war in Syria and plans for an international peace conference, a senior State Department official said.

Kerry updated his Russian counterpart on his discussions with the Syrian rebels and officials from countries involved in the talks and his plans to participate in a meeting in Jordan next week ahead of the international conference, a senior State Department official said.

Russia has been a staunch ally of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

, blocking new sanctions against Syria at the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
and supplying the government with arms.

Kerry had said earlier on Tuesday he expected the proposed peace conference to be held in early June, and denied reports that the Damascus government did not plan to attend.

Syrian Information Minister Omran Zoabi said earlier in the day that Assad's government, fighting an insurgency that threatens to draw in Syria's neighbours, wanted specifics on such a conference before it decides whether to be part of it.

Kerry is visiting Sweden for a meeting of the Arctic Council, a grouping of eight nations with Arctic territory.

Kerry had said earlier the exact timing of the Syria peace negotiations was up to the United Nations, but that he expected it would take place in early June, noting that a great deal of work had already taken place.

Cameron Calls for Peace Talks Pressure on Syrian Rivals
[An Nahar] Britannia's Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
said Wednesday that "urgent" pressure must be put on the rival Syrian sides to propose names for a transitional government.

Cameron said after talks with U.N. leader the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
that he "fully supports" plans for a new international peace conference that could be held in Geneva next month.

The conference would seek to break the deadlock on efforts to set up a transitional government even though Syrian rebels have refused to discuss any arrangement that includes Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Trampler of Homs...

"What is important here is to make sure that we really put pressure on the parties to bring forward the necessary names for a transitional government and that we start proper detailed negotiations," Cameron told news hounds.

"My concern is that we will get into too long a process. Urgent action needs to be taken right now to put pressure on the participants to get together to agree a transitional government that everyone in Syria can get behind," he said.

Cameron also defended moves to soften a European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
arms embargo on Syria.

EU sanctions against Syria to be reconsidered at the end of the month, with La Belle France and Britannia pushing for a lifting of the embargo so rebels can receive weapons.

Cameron said the embargo had already been amended "so that we can give the opposition forces technical assistance, we can help to shape them and work with them and I think that is important."

"If you don't engage with the opposition then we shouldn't be surprised if bad boy elements in that opposition grow and that's not what we want. So we should be engaging and that is the debate that will take place in Europe," the British leader said.

#1  Talk about a pompous wind bag. Does anyone at all think that Cameron has any clout anywhere that actually counts for anything?

This buffoon continues to act in the world and EU as though the British Empire still exists instead of being a small regional enclave within the EUSSR.

U.N. Assembly Slams Syrian Government's 'Escalation' of War
[An Nahar] The U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday condemned the Syrian government's "escalation" of the country's war and backed the role of the opposition coalition in transition talks.

But Russia, Syria's key diplomatic ally, fiercely opposed the resolution, branding it a potential obstacle to peace negotiations expected to be held in Geneva next month.

And only 107 countries in the 193-member assembly backed the text, down from 133 when the last Syria vote was held in August.

The United States, Britannia and La Belle France joined Arab countries in supporting the resolution which expressed "outrage at the rapidly increasing corpse count," now estimated at more than 80,000 by Syrian activists.

Russia, China, Syria, Iran and North Korea were among 12 countries to oppose the resolution. Fifty-nine countries, including Brazil, South Africa, India and Indonesia abstained.

The assembly "strongly condemns the continued escalation in the use by the Syrian authorities of heavy weapons", including "ballistic missiles" against civilians, said the resolution, which was drawn up by Qatar and other Arab states.

On political efforts to end the war, the assembly demanded all sides work to "implement rapidly" a communique agreed by the major powers in Geneva in June last year laying out the steps toward a transitional government.

The resolution welcomed the opposition Syrian National Coalition "as effective representative interlocutors needed for a transition." This phrase infuriated Russia which said it would encourage the opposition to step up "armed actions" against the Syrian government.

The Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
has recognized the coalition as Syria's legitimate government. There was no recognition in the U.N. text but Arab states are said to be planning moves to get the coalition into Syria's U.N. seat later this year.

Russia and the United States agreed to press for a new international conference on the war which is expected to be held in Geneva next month. Russia's U.N. ambassador Vitaly Churkin wrote to all 193 U.N. members ahead of the vote to slam the resolution as "one-sided and biased".

Russia and China have vetoed three U.N. Security Council resolutions, proposed by western nations, aiming to step up pressure on Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
over the conflict.

And Western nations strongly backed the new assembly resolution.

"The consequences of this crisis are growing more dire not only within Syria, but across the region," said deputy U.S. ambassador Rosemary DiCarlo, who added that backing the resolution was in line with efforts to set up a peace conference.

La Belle France's U.N. ambassador Gerard Araud said the resolution would help the opposition to unite for any peace conference.

"This is a substantive draft that reflects the horrific situation on the ground and pushes for a political solution," said Germany's U.N. ambassador Peter Wittig.

#1  What was the escalation? All they did was shoot back.

This idea that war is a gentleman's game where everyone has to use the same equipment and rules is one of the most pernicious ideas to come from the post Victorian world; "self-determination" is probably the other one.

IAEA Says Talks with Iran Failed
[An Nahar] Nuclear talks between Iran and the U.N. atomic agency failed yet again Wednesday, as a top U.S. diplomat said she expected the IAEA to report Tehran to the U.N. Security Council soon.

The IAEA announcement came just as EU foreign policy chief was due to meet Iran's chief nuclear negotiator in Istanbul for the first time since failed six-party talks in April.

"We could not finalize the structured approach document that has been under negotiation for a year and a half," the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency's chief inspector told news hounds.

"Our best efforts have not been successful so far," Herman Nackaerts said, adding that no new date for another meeting had been set.

Iran's envoy in the more than eight hours of "intensive" talks in Vienna, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, was characteristically more upbeat, saying that the next meeting would see a deal finalized.

"The aim of this ... is to bridge the gaps towards a conclusion of the text by the next meeting," he told a joint press briefing.

The IAEA was pressing Iranian officials to grant access to sites, documents and scientists involved in Tehran's alleged efforts to develop atomic weapons, mostly before 2003 but possibly ongoing.

Iran says the IAEA's findings are based on faulty intelligence from foreign spy agencies such as the CIA and Israel's Mossad -- intelligence it complains it has not even been allowed to see.

Nine rounds of talks since the publication of a major IAEA report in November 2011 have produced no breakthrough.

Hezbollah to open 'new front' in Golan Heights
See 'Israel Hints at New Strikes' story below; that warning was in response to this threat by Nasty and the Iranians.
Iran has convinced Syria to allow Hezbollah to open a "new front" against Israel in the Golan Heights, the London-based Arabic-language newspaper al-Hayat reported Wednesday. Tehran, seeking to prevent the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government, asked Damascus if Hezbollah could set up a new military front against Israel in the Golan.

"All Arabs and Muslims" are requested to join the fight against Israel, Tehran said, according to Israel Radio.

The report comes a week after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah vowed to respond to Jerusalem's ostensible aggression against Syria with the help of Syria's advanced "game-changing" weapons. The next stage, he warned during a speech, would be opening up a front on the Golan Heights.

The Palestinian newspaper al-Quds also reported Wednesday that Tehran had persuaded Damascus "to open the door to jihad" in the Golan Heights in an effort enable Arab and Muslim fighters to unite and confront Israel, so that they're "ready" if Israel strikes Syria again.

The al-Quds website wrote that Iran also discussed the issue with other Arab leaders, namely Jordan's King Abdullah, who expressed his own "concerns" about the surge of radical Islamist groups, such as the Jabhat al-Nusra, in Syria.

The Lebanese daily al-Akhbar suggested last week that Iran had "reached a final decision" to respond to Israel's reported strike on Syria by "turning the Golan into a new Fatah-land. The front has become open to Syrians and Palestinians and anyone who wants to fight Israel."

A message to that effect was conveyed to Assad by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on behalf of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, reported al-Akhbar.

Arabic media reports also suggested Syria had allowed Palestinians living there to attack Israel from the Golan Heights. However, Fatah spokesman Amad Assaf dismissed the claim by saying that Palestinians don't take their orders from the Syrian president, according to al-Quds al-Arabi, another London-based paper.

Earlier this week, the Syrian government announced that it reserves the right to invade the Israeli-held Golan Heights at any time, and accused Jerusalem of violating the terms of the 1974 ceasefire that ended the Yom Kippur War.

#3  Syria has long threatened to expand any war waged upon it to its neighbors.

Lebanon is pretty much a no-go; Hesb'allah doesn't want to befoul its nest. Jordan has US forces in place, plus it's militarily capable. Same for Turkey, though indirect action via bomb-attacks on the border towns appear to be the tactique-de-jour. A direct attack on Israel by either Syria or Hesb'allah would be both a tactical and strategic error.

That left an indirect attack, either through the Golan Heights or the Sianai penninsula.

It rather benefits Assad in another way as well, in that a Golan Heights front would possibly siphon off some rebels that are now fighting the Assad government.

Israel Hints at New Strikes, Warns Syria Not to Hit Back
WASHINGTON – A senior Israeli official
...unnamed, of course...
signaled on Wednesday that Israel was considering further military strikes on Syria to stop the transfer of advanced weapons to Islamic militants, and he warned the Syrian president, Pencilneck Bashar al-Assad, that his government would face crippling consequences if it retaliated against Israel.
By 'crippling' I think he means "y'all be dead"...
The Israeli official said: “Israel is determined to continue to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah. The transfer of such weapons to Hezbollah will destabilize and endanger the entire region.”

“If Syrian President Assad reacts by attacking Israel, or tries to strike Israel through his terrorist proxies,” the official said, “he will risk forfeiting his life regime, for Israel will retaliate.”

The Israeli official, who has been briefed by high-level officials on the Syria situation in the past two days, declined to be identified, citing the need to protect internal Israeli deliberations. He contacted The New York Times on Wednesday.
If he's so intent on protecting internal deliberations you'd think he'd keep his mouth shut. Unless Bibi asked him to make the call...
The precise motives for Israel’s warning were uncertain:
That's not true at all. It's completely clear: if you give Hezbollah more missiles we'll whack them. If you resist we'll whack you. What could be clearer than that?
Israel could be trying to restrain Syria’s behavior without undertaking further military action, or alerting other countries to another strike. That would ratchet up the tension in an already fraught situation in Syria, where a civil war has been raging for more than two years.

Mr. Assad and Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, have both said in recent days that the Israeli-Syrian border, which has been relatively quiet despite the more than two years of civil war inside Syria, could become a “resistance front,” in response to Israeli aggression.
Nasty and Pencilneck would so like to distract the world, and their neighbors, and the rebels, any way possible. Playing the Joooo card is predictable...
In his comments, the Israeli official noted that “Israel has so far refrained from intervening in Syria’s civil war and will maintain this policy as long as Assad refrains from attacking Israel directly or indirectly.”

“Israel,” he said, “will continue its policy of interdicting attempts to strengthen Hezbollah, but will not intercede in the Syrian civil war as long as Assad desists from direct or indirect attacks against Israel.”

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declined to discuss the meaning of the Israeli official’s statement. “We’re not going to comment on the story,” he said.
Meaning, "The story and the message are perfectly clear, and we need say nothing further"...
American and Israeli political analysts agree that Israel has little motive to intervene in Syria’s civil war, but is deeply concerned about the transfer of advanced weapons, as well as the danger that Mr. Assad’s stockpiles of chemical weapons could be used against Israel.

Report: Syria Already Has Advanced Russian Missiles
[ArutzSheva] Advanced Russian missile launchers have already been transferred to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
's regime, reports an Arabic newspaper.

Advanced Russian missile launchers that Israel was trying to prevent from falling into Syrian hands have already been transferred to President Bashir al-Assad's regime, the London-based Arabic-language Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper reported Tuesday.

The report was published as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu took off to Russia to convince President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
not to sell advanced Russian missile launchers to Syria.

According to the Al-Quds Al-Arabi report, 200 launchers for advanced anti-aircraft S-300 missiles are already in Syrian hands, and Syrian experts have been fully trained to use the launchers and no longer need Russian supervision.

The report, cited by JNS, was attributed to a Syrian military official.

Israel fears that Syrian possession of the S-300 system, which is able to intercept drones and cruise missiles, will make future aerial offensives by the Jewish state more difficult, in addition to the possibility of Russian weaponry being obtained by the Hizbullah terror group.

"Anyone who provides weaponry to terror organizations is siding with terror," Tourism Minister Uzi Landau said Monday, according to JNS. He accused Russia of destabilizing the Middle East by selling weapons to Syria.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Israel had warned the United States that Russia plans to sell these advanced weapons to Syria, and that Netanyahu spoke with U.S. President Barack Obama

to make him aware of the deal.

Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, subsequently said his country is not planning to supply Syria with any weapons beyond the current contracts that are nearing completion.

Following their meeting Tuesday, Netanyahu and Putin spoke to the press, but Netanyahu did not indicate whether he succeeded in convincing Putin to halt arms supplies to Syria or whether the two leaders reached any firm agreements.

Speaking to news hounds, Netanyahu stressed that his country's task was to "defend its citizens."

"Together we are trying to find ways to strengthen stability and security, we have a remarkable opportunity to directly speak with each other," the Israeli premier was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

Water and Energy Minister Silvan Shalom said on Monday that Netanyahu was "fully determined" to halt sales by Russia of advanced missiles to Syria.

"Such a sale to Syria would alter the balance of forces in the region and these weapons could fall into the hands of Hizbullah," Shalom said.
