Burglar caught red-handed in air conditioner

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Police arrested a suspected burglar who got stuck in the casing of an air conditioner that had been removed, his head and arms dangling out of the grocery store wall with the rest of his body inside.

Police said the 39-year-old man was found stuck in the hole in the wall on Wednesday in the New York City borough of Queens with his with pockets full of cash. He was charged with burglary and possession of stolen property.
Because idiocy is not legally actionable, even in NYC (where it should be.)

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Today in History II
The Four Chaplains were four Army chaplains who gave their lives when the USAT Dorchester was hit by a torpedo and sank on February 3, 1943. They helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their life jackets when the supply ran out. 230 men of the 902 aboard survived the attack.

The chaplains were Lieutenants Rev. George L. Fox (Methodist); Rabbi Alexander D. Goode (Jewish); Fr. John P. Washington (Roman Catholic); and Rev. Clark V. Poling (Dutch Reformed). The four chaplains were all sailing on the USAT Dorchester troop transport ship on 3 February 1943 when the vessel was torpedoed by the German U-Boat U-223. As the vessel sank, the four chaplains calmed the frightened soldiers and sailors, aided in the evacuation of the ship, and helped guide wounded men to safety. The chaplains also gave up their own life vests.

Today in History
The Day the Music Died (February 3, 1959), was the day of the plane crash that killed three popular American rock and roll musicians. Early that morning, at approximately 1:05 AM Central Standard Time, a Beechcraft Bonanza airplane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, crashed in a farmer's field en route to a concert near Fargo, North Dakota, killing all three performers as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson. The phrase "The Day The Music Died" was coined by Don McLean in his 1971 song about the crash, "American Pie".

And the three men I admire most: The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast the day the music died.

Nurse lists 20 doctors as potential fathers to her baby
Sarajevo’s Kosevo hospital was rocked by a sex scandal when a nurse handed over to the director a list of 20 prominent doctors as potential fathers to her baby son, a Sarajevo weekly magazine reported on Friday.
Wudn't me. I wuz outta town that month or two. I think it was the one with the hat, myself...
The nurse, identified only as Rhonda Roundheels Friendly Mable Merima F, who gave birth to a healthy boy last month, asked the hospital management to investigate and determine who fathered the child, Slobodna Bosna magazine reported. “These rumours exist, but here at the hospital the word is that 15 (not 20) doctors are on the list.
Oh, well, if it's only 15 then what's the fuss?
However, we do not have any official information to share with the press and are looking into the case,” Biljana Andric, spokeswoman for the Kosevo hospital told The Associated Press.

Gym to introduce 'Naked Sunday'
Self-conscious about what you wear while working out? A Dutch gym plans to introduce "Naked Sunday" for people who like to huff and puff in the buff.
Oh, just what I need: Not only would I get to huff and puff and cause my protesting body to ache from head to toe, but I'd get to ogle a 60-year-old guy's bunghole while I did it. No, thanks. The occasional comely maiden doesn't make up for the majority of hairy, sweating guys.
Patrick de Man, owner of Fitworld gym in the town of Heteren, said he got the idea in part from two of his customers who are "avid nudists."
I'm not an "avid nudist" because I own a mirror. Nobody wants to see the remains of my once gorgeous body, especially since it was never that gorgeous. Based on empirical observation, I'm in the majority.
"I heard that some other gyms are offering courses on 'pole-dancing' as a sport, so I thought: why not bring something new to the market?" de Man said.
What's the matter with sweat? And maybe strategically placed oxygen bottles. I go to the gym and I spend more time catching my breath than I do exercising.
He said the response had been overwhelming, "both positive and negative."
I'd guess the positive is made up primarily of people who've never seen fairly random selections of adults nekkid. Yes, gents, there are occasional comely young maidens, but if you stare at them too hard they're not gonna show up on Naked Sunday. Yes, ladies, there are body builders to be found at the gym. They're a definite minority.
The Dutch Federation of Naturists, with 70,000 members, was curious to see if Fitworld's plan would work, spokesman Bernd Huiser said. "We recently conducted a large survey among our members, and most prefer to exercise with their clothes on," he said. "The most popular activities (for nudists) are things you do outdoors, like walking on the beach, or swimming in a lake, or maybe gardening."
Kinda lets out the gym, dunnit?
De Man said the first question Fitworld customers were asking was whether it would be sanitary. Nude exercisers would be required to put towels down on weight machines and to use disposable seat covers while riding bikes, he said. All machines would be cleaned and disinfected afterward. "We clean them every day anyway," he said.
Don't go leaving skidmarks on my weight bench, dammit!
He said there was no need to advertise, as Fitworld has been deluged by interview requests from Dutch newspapers and TV stations. One person calling himself Kees who visited the club's Web site wrote: "What a ridiculous idea, what kind of nutjob comes up with a plan like naked exercise?"
The Greeks and the Romans used to do it all the time. Prob'ly it'll cause a nice surge in business at first, with a leveling off later. This time next year they'll need another gimmick.
Another, calling himself Ron the Nudist, said: "Hi people who can't appreciate naked exercising ... Just because you are ashamed of your naked bodies doesn't mean naked isn't nice."
Naked, like most things, is neutral. If you're ugly with your clothes on you'll be ugly with 'em off.

#8  as an avid weightlifter and cyclist I may point out that most of the exercises that I do cannot, and should not ever, under no circomstances, no, absolutely not, no way jose, be done in the nude , because at some point some very important dangly bits, that I am very attached to both phisically and mentally WILL get in the way , Murphy's law will insure that that point comes at the exact moment I make a full extension with a 120 kg barbell.

And that my friends will suck bigtime.

#2  Low winter snow levels effects water tables, where drinking water is drawn. Apparently, Sydney, Australia and environs are now so dry that it is a desert region. On the other hand, West Coast ski destinations are having one of their best seasons in memory.

#3  Great, just great. I left Michigan to get out of the snow; moved to Washington and this year we have had what has been described as 100+ year storms. Little sister sent some pictures of snow in the Battle Creek region: ice covered streets, downed power lines, etc, so evidently the disaster isn't state wide.

Floods inundate Indonesian capital
Two days of severe rains have caused the worst flooding in five years in the Indonesian capital, washing into thousands of homes and forcing residents to flee, witnesses and officials said. Filthy storm water inundated markets, hospitals and businesses as residents used inflatable rafts to retrieve belongings from their houses. Waters were four-metres deep in some places in Jakarta, home to some 12 million people.

With many of the city's roads inaccessible, commuters spent several hours in gridlock trying to get to work. Many were unable to reach the central business district and returned home. City officials said almost 80 districts where faced with serious flooding with more rain forecast. "It has not been this bad since 2002," when the Presidential Palace in the upscale Menteng area flooded, said Anom Nurcahyo of Jakarta's Flood Crisis Centre said "We cannot say yet if the water will get higher."

Africa Subsaharan
Women, not men, choose spouses on island
ORANGO ISLAND, Guinea-Bissau - He was 14 when the girl entered his grass-covered hut and placed a plate of steaming fish in front of him. Like all men on this African isle, Carvadju Jose Nananghe knew exactly what it meant. Refusing was not an option. His heart pounding, he lifted the aromatic dish, prepared with an ancient recipe, to his lips, agreeing in one bite to marry the girl.

"I had no feelings for her," said Nananghe, now 65. "Then when I ate this meal, it was like lightning. I wanted only her."

In this archipelago of 50 islands off the western rim of Africa, it's women, not men, who choose. They make their proposals public by offering their grooms-to-be a dish of distinctively prepared fish, marinated in red palm oil. Once they have asked, men are powerless to say no.

To have refused, explained Nananghe, remembering the day half a century ago, would have dishonored his family — and in any case, why would he want to choose his own wife? "Love comes first into the heart of the woman," he explained. "Once it's in the woman, only then can it jump into the man."

#1  In the cultures where there is free choice, women still pick the men. The game is more subtle, no marinated fish involved, but the result is the same... although men are convinced it's them who made the choice. I, too, was convinced, but in retrospective, I do see things clearly layed out before me. ;-)
