71-Year-Old Man Shoots Back at Armed Robbers in Philly, ‘Emptied His Gun' During Shootout
[Gateway] A 71-year-old man shot back at armed robbers in North Philadelphia late Thursday night.

The elderly man reportedly had just picked up Chinese takeout along the 2400 block of North 10th Street near Cumberland Street when two men dressed in black announced a robbery.

The unidentified 71-year-old pulled out his revolver and exchanged gunfire with the robbers.

Philly police said the 71-year-old "emptied his gun" during the shootout.

The victim was struck in the leg and taken to a local hospital.

The suspects fled on foot and are still at large.

Portland's mayor turns down Nike's request for help with theft, Walmart closing remaining stores in the city
[HOT AIR] Earlier this week Jazz wrote about an unusual request made by Nike directly to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler. Nike’s store in Northeast Portland has been closed for months because of ongoing retail theft and the company wrote to ask if it could either pay to hire additional cops to patrol the area or pay off duty cops to do so. Today, Mayor Wheeler said no.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has asked Nike to reopen its shuttered community store in Northeast Portland "on a limited basis," even though he says the city can’t meet the company’s request to detail off-duty police officers to provide security...

"PPB does not currently have the capacity to offer secondary employment to any private business in the city," he wrote.

"The Police Bureau currently relies heavily on overtime to reach even minimum staffing levels for regular shifts," Wheeler continued. "A significant personnel constraint persists, which is not driven by a shortage of funding."

That’s a roundabout way of saying the city still hasn’t nearly recovered from its brush with defunding the police, an exceptionally stupid idea that the city embraced in 2020. Defund resulted in experienced officers running for the exits. But the mayor’s response letter also suggested that Nike may be part of the problem by refusing to allow its own on site security to detain shoplifters.

Alex Murdaugh and family linked to three further mysterious deaths
[NYP] Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh started his life in prison for killing his wife and son on Friday, but mystery and scandal continues to swirl around the remains of his family, a prominent legal dynasty that had a lot of influence in the area.

Less than 24 hours after he was convicted on two counts of murder, Murdaugh, 54, appeared for sentencing at Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro, South Carolina, on Friday, cuffed and wearing a khaki prison jumpsuit — a stark representation of how far he had fallen from his former high-flying life.

"Everyone knows [the Murdaughs], and in addition to that, they had a lot of influence here," former friend John Wright said of the family, which had reigned over the Low Country’s legal system for more than a century.

"I thought the jury might be more reticent or fearful about convicting [Alex]."

Former 'Sweetie Pie's' Star Gets Life in Prison for Arranged Killing
[BREITBART] The former star of St. Louis-based television reality show "Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s" was sentenced Thursday to life in prison for arranging the shooting death of his nephew to collect a life insurance payment.

James "Tim" Norman did not speak on his own behalf at the sentencing hearing in the March 2016 killing of his 21-year-old nephew, Andre Montgomery Jr. Both men had starred in the long-running OWN reality show about the family’s soul food business in the St. Louis area.

Norman’s attorneys submitted several letters from family and friends asking for leniency, including from Norman’s mother and founder of the Sweetie Pie’s restaurants, Robbie Montgomery.

"I don’t know whether Tim did what he was accused and convicted of," wrote Robbie Montgomery, who is also the victim’s grandmother. "He is still the baby that I bore, and I love him as every mother involved loves their child."

Prosecutors said Norman took out a out a life insurance policy worth $450,000 on Montgomery and arranged to have him lured to a street in St. Louis, where another man shot him.

Several of Andre Montgomery’s family members, including his mother, Michell Griggs, asked that Norman be sentenced to life, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. U.S. District Judge John A. Ross gave him two life sentences, calling it "a cold-blooded, incredibly premeditated, planned execution of your nephew."

Norman was convicted in September of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit fraud.

Midshipmen warn left-wing politics are infiltrating Merchant Marine Academy: 'Last frontier for woke ideology'
[FoxNews] Multiple current and former midshipmen at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, told Fox News Digital that "woke" ideology has been seeping into the school in recent years and has accelerated under the leadership of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

The highly selective USMMA, which is the only military academy authorized to carry a battle standard because of its 142 casualties during World War II, is under the Department of Transportation and educates leaders "who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States," according to its website.

The academy made headlines in January for a controversy over "Christ on the Water," a historic painting that depicts Jesus Christ walking on the water toward merchant mariners lost at sea. The image painted by Hunter Wood, a merchant mariner whose art drew on his own experiences, has adorned the Elliot M. See conference room located in the school's administrative Wiley Hall for 76 years.

"Aboard the fragile lifeboats, the men [in World War II] placed their faith in a Power greater than theirs, interpreted here by Hunter Wood in perhaps his most ambitious work," reads a description of the painting by the USMMA from the 1970s.

The academy placed a white curtain over the painting after a complaint from the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF). In his Jan. 10 letter to USMMA Superintendent Vice Adm. Joanna M. Nunan, MRFF president and founder Michael Weinstein argued that the painting's display constituted a violation of the First Amendment's clause forbidding the establishment of religion.

After the move prompted a petition and letters to Nunan from figures such as Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., and other members of Congress, the academy announced that the massive painting will be uncovered but ultimately moved to the school's chapel, which multiple sources told Fox News Digital is prone to flooding.

THERE WAS JUST NO HOPE FOR THEM’
One midshipman at the academy who spoke to Fox News Digital on condition of anonymity said Nunan is well qualified for her position and that he remains unsure to what extent she played a role in the Jesus painting controversy, but he noted that many of his friends are frustrated by it because "there are bigger problems going on with the school."

The Jesus painting situation is a symptom of woke-ism that is "absolutely" infiltrating the USMMA, said John Guettlein, a 2022 graduate of the academy who spoke to Fox News Digital from a fishing vessel off the coast of Alaska.

Guettlein pinpointed the school's COVID-19 vaccine policies as the start of the trend, which he claimed drew pushback from many of the midshipmen when the school began cracking down on the unvaccinated in 2021.

"It was basically [get the vaccine] or get kicked out of the academy, and for an entire year, they were picking off one by one," he said, adding that of approximately 140 midshipmen who originally refused the shot, that number was whittled down to four in his graduating class amid threats of possible expulsion and paying back hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship money.

"A lot of the freshmen, a lot of my friends, just straight-up left because they didn't want to get into a school that was threatening that. There was just no hope for them," Guettlein said, adding that he and other seniors were better able to withstand the vaccine mandate because they had already logged extensive time at sea and had "a lot more on the line."

Online platform HoggPool disappears after reportedly swindling billions from Egyptians
[Al Ahram] Appearing in August, HoggPool was an online platform that claimed to offer cryptocurrency mining and trading services for a fee.

It promised high returns on investment and attracted hundreds of Egyptians who deposited money into its account.

HoggPool offered different plans for customers depending on their budget and goals by buying or renting cryptocurrency mining machines starting from $10 with a daily profit of 10 percent.

The platform allowed Egyptians to send the money in pounds instead of dollars at prices that were lower than the official exchange rates by more than 30 percent.

This meant that users would transfer EGP 200 to the platform instead of over EGP 300 in order to rent a mining machine worth $10.

The platform earned users’ trust by posting an image of an alleged Egyptian commercial license on Facebook.

It claimed to use advanced technology and algorithms to mine various cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin.

It also claimed to have a team of experts who could help customers trade their coins on different exchanges.

However,
the way to a man's heart remains through his stomach...
on 24 February, the platform suddenly stopped paying its clients.

Many users tried to contact the platform to no avail.

SCAM VICTIMS
In recent weeks, YouTubers and online content creators had warned the public against HoggPool.

Some pointed out several elements on the platform’s website and mobile app that indicated it was a scam.

"I bought [mining] machines with EGP 85,000... and only received EGP 8,000 [in return]," Nasr Helal, one of the victims, told Malaffat TV programme on Heya Channel on Thursday, saying he joined the platform in mid-February.

Helal said that he and his sons subscribed to the programme and that they would receive the funds via electronic wallet.

Some customers also said on social media that they had invested their life savings or borrowed money from relatives or friends to join the platform.

PONZIS
This is not the first large-scale online Ponzi scheme to take place in Egypt.

In recent years, many Egyptians have fallen victim to similar scams, losing significant amounts of money in the process.

The country's economic crisis has made people more susceptible to these types of scams with some looking for ways to make quick and easy money.

Scams like HoggPool are not uncommon in the cryptocurrency world.

Some criminals use fake websites, emails or apps to trick people into giving them money or personal information.

Dealing in cryptocurrency is illegal in Egypt and is punishable by prison and a fine of up to EGP 10 million.

The Central Bank of Egypt has previously warned the public against dealing in cryptocurrencies.

NAS rebels say concerned over clashes in Juba County
[SUDANTRIBUNE] The opposition National Salvation Front (NAS) has expressed concerns over conflict between land grabbers and the youth in Juba County of South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State.

"On 25th February 2023, in Mori Boma, Gondokoro payam, forces from South Sudan Peoples Defense Forces (SSPDF), Riverine Defense Units, land grabbers and elements from Dinka Bor disguising as displaced persons, together using state resources and influence, looted, displaced, arrested, killed and grabbed land with impunity. Besides this, the SSPDF forces planned and bombarded Gondokoro Island using artillery guns, on the pretext that there is presence of NAS forces in the island, but the reality is that they wanted to displace and occupy the Bari land under this cover," the group said in a statement extended to Sudan Tribune Friday.

"This unprofessional behavior of the regime’s security forces culminated into massive displacement, death, injury, looting, destruction of property and houses," it added.

The hold-out group further said that government intelligence agencies on February 26th sent spies tothe rebel base in Mundri East to spark internal disagreements and possibly cause splits within the group’s rank and file.

"The Leadership of National Salvation Front (NAS) would like to inform its members, the people of South Sudan and members of International Community on the recent security activities of the regime of Salva Kiir and its security forces in Mundri Area Command of Western Equatoria State," the statement said.

"On 26th February 2023, NAS intelligence under Mundri Area Command intercepted activities and movement of South Sudan People’s Defense Forces SSPDF, National Security and some war brokers planning to infiltrate the ranks and files of NAS forces in Mundri Area Command, with the objectives to cause confusion and defections of the forces in the area," it added.

It said that a convoy of government forces triggered fighting with the rebel forces, resulting in the killing of at least 13 soldiers — including the alleged traitors — and capture of ammunitions, among others.

DRC: Fighting continues as M23 withdrawal begins
[AFRICANEWS] The M23 rebels have just taken control of a new town in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
and remained on the offensive Tuesday, a day that should have marked the start of the withdrawal from their positions, local sources said.

According to a new timetable adopted by East African leaders on February 17, "all gangs", including the M23, must withdraw by March 30, at the end of a three-stage process that was to have started on February 28.

Despite this umpteenth demand, the rebels are advancing in Masisi and holding on to their positions in Rutshuru, territories to the west and north of Goma, the lovely provincial capital of North Kivu.

On Monday, they seized Mweso, some 100 km north of Goma, after taking control of Mushaki in recent days and briefly occupying the mining town of Rubaya. According to a security source, fighting continued on Tuesday about 30 km west of Goma.

The M23 is also occupying sections of the last passable road linking Goma to the rest of North Kivu. Three of the four roads that serve this city of more than a million people are now cut off by the rebels.

The fourth, leading to South Kivu, collapsed due to rains in late 2022. This road, which borders Lake Kivu and leads to Bukavu, a hundred kilometers to the south, had allowed part of the army and the population to flee when the M23 took Goma in 2012.

Tens of thousands of people now live in the territories controlled by the rebellion. Like in Mweso, a town of more than 30,000 inhabitants, which is "entirely occupied by the M23", Alphonse Habimana, president of the town's civil society, told AFP on Tuesday.

Until Monday afternoon, fighting in and around the town pitted the M23 on one side against the Congolese army and gangs on the other.

Héritier Ndangendange, front man for one of these groups - the APCLS, the Alliance of Patriots for a Free and Sovereign Congo - confirmed their defeat, while claiming to be "around" Mweso.

According to Mr. Habimana, residents who had fled on Monday "began to return to their homes on Tuesday," despite the presence of the rebels.

The mostly Tutsi M23 rebellion, which has been dormant for nearly a decade, took up arms in late 2021. Kinshasa accuses Rwanda of supporting it, which has been corroborated by U.N. experts, though Kigali denies it.

2 Dead, 79 Police Held Hostage in Colombia in Protest Against Oil Company
[TOLONEWS] A police officer and civilian were killed during violent mostly peaceful protests in Colombia's Caqueta province on Thursday, and 79 officers and nine oilfield workers were taken hostage by members of rural communities, the government said.

The violence erupted like lava from a volcano in part of the San Vicente del Caguan municipality, where members of rural and Indigenous communities blocked access to an oil field and set a fire, national police said, to demand Emerald Energy help fix roads.

President Gustavo Petro, who ordered defense and interior officials to the region, decried the killings on Twitter.

"We have a popular movement which by its exclusion and the influence of groups which want to destroy this government and subsume Colombia in war, has ended up murdering a young policeman," he said.

The attorney general's office should investigate the killings, while the Red Thingy should attend to those being held hostage, he said.

"I expect from the perpetrators the unilateral liberation of government officials before a new escalation of violence is caused," Petro added.

The office of human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
ombudsman Carlos Camargo confirmed in a statement a policeman and a civilian had been killed.

Officials from Camargo's office were accompanying the coppers and Emerald employees who were being held, the office said on Twitter.

The officer and civilian died from gunshot wounds, police sources said, adding FARC dissidents who reject a 2016 peace deal are present in the region and could be involved in the unrest.

Protests in areas close to oil and mining projects regularly occur in Colombia as communities push for companies to build infrastructure including roads and schools.

Rooters could not immediately reach Emerald Energy, a subsidiary of China's state-owned company Sinochem, for comment.

Government Corruption
Congress Quietly Left The Door Open To Funneling More Tax Dollars To EcoHealth Research In China For ‘National Security'
[The Federalist] EcoHealth Alliance — the nonprofit that infamously funneled taxpayer funds into the Wuhan Institute of Virology for bat-based coronavirus research — was given a shocking loophole in Congress’s omnibus spending package to receive money for research in China supported by the country’s communist leadership. Why? Our government won’t tell us.

Back in December, Congress inserted a clause in its omnibus appropriations act that finally defunded the Wuhan Institute of Virology and appeared to defund other similar research in China, but the latter section appears to be hollow. While EcoHealth has been barred from feeding tax dollars directly into the Wuhan Institute of Virology, it still has the power to potentially direct taxpayer dollars into China:
SEC. 8143. None of the funds made available by this Act may be used to fund any work to be performed by EcoHealth Alliance, Inc. in China on research supported by the government of China unless the Secretary of Defense determines that a waiver to such prohibition is in the national security interests of the United States.

What "national security interest" could there possibly be in EcoHealth Alliance directing funds into China for research supported by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)? The Federalist reached out to the Department of Defense and asked that very question but never heard back. This begs another interesting question: What kind of CCP-supported research are our tax dollars going toward that is so secretive the American people can’t be privy to it?

Many know that Dr. Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) approved millions in grant money for EcoHealth Alliance, which the nonprofit used for bat-based coronavirus research and perhaps even dangerous gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

What most don’t know is that the biggest government funder of EcoHealth Alliance is not the NIAID, but the Department of Defense, which since 2008, has allotted EcoHealth Alliance $46 million. What reason could our military have that it cannot go nine months without sending research money to China via EcoHealth Alliance? We don’t know.

Research outsourcing? I doubt it was our military however. Much higher up the food chain than that.

Biden Administration Approved 192 U.S. Trade Licenses Worth $23 Billion to Support Blacklisted Chinese Companies
[Reuters via The Last Refuge] He’s not called China Joe for nothing. This is quite a considerable amount of U.S. tech products delivered to blacklisted Chinese companies. It would be interesting to trace the multinational kickbacks to the Biden administration.

March 3 (Reuters) — The Biden administration approved 192 licenses worth over $23 billion to ship U.S. goods and technology to Chinese companies on a U.S. trade blacklist in the first quarter of last year, according to a document released by a U.S. congressional committee on Friday.

'I'm Begging You...Get Our People Out of Here': East Palestine Residents Erupt at Town Hall
[Townhall] Norfolk Southern sent a representative to attend a town hall event in East Palestine, Ohio, the site of the recent toxic train crash, and the reception was anything but warm. This event was a sacrificial lamb situation since no one had any of what this representative had to say, with any remarks of empathy and regret falling on deaf ears. CBS News captured some snippets of the event, where locals unleashed on the company whose train derailment has left residents fearful. The drinking water might be unsafe. We don’t know the condition of the soil, and the Biden administration has been criminally lethargic in its response.

Let’s not forget that it took them almost three weeks to finally release federal assistance and get Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to the area.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Environmental Protection Agency are present, but updates on the situation are not regularly, leading to high anxiety. Joe Biden will probably not step into the town due to its political leanings; it voted 70 percent for Trump.

Workers at the crash site are filling ill, with even more troubling reports that inadequate protective gear was provided. These rail workers have little to no experience handling toxic chemicals. Simple items, like gloves, were not readily available, adding to the narrative of gross incompetence that infests this administration. Buttigieg’s soporific reaction to the crash is even more alarming since this sort of screw-up could endanger presidential ambition, which I’m sure he still harbors. Blaming Trump isn’t going to cut it. He’s already done that, and it’s fallen flat. The cleanup will take years, though townsfolk in East Palestine and nearby Darlington, Pennsylvania, is less than 10 miles away, and other surrounding localities are at a loss.

Tie your stuff down Grapes of Wrath style and drive the UHaul load to Bucyrus, Wadsworth or Mantua. Just don’t go downriver into the kill zone.

Home Front: WoT
Joe Biden Had Cancerous Lesion Removed From Chest Last Month
WASHINGTON (AP) — A skin lesion removed from President Joe Biden’s chest last month was a basal cell carcinoma — a common form of skin cancer — his doctor said Friday, adding that no further treatment was required.

Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the White House doctor who has served as Biden’s longtime physician, said "all cancerous tissue was successfully removed" during the president’s routine physical on Feb. 16. Biden, 80, was deemed by O’Connor to be " healthy, vigorous" and "fit " to handle his White House responsibilities during that physical exam, which comes as he is weeks away from launching an expected bid for reelection in 2024.

O’Connor said the site of the removal on Biden’s chest has "healed nicely" and the president will continue regular skin screenings as part of his routine health plan.

Basal cells are among the most common and easily treated forms of cancer — especially when caught early. O’Connor said they don’t tend to spread like other cancers, but could grow in size, which is why they are removed.

Biden had "several localized non-melanoma skin cancers" removed from his body before he started his presidency, O’Connor said in his Feb. 16 summary of the president’s health, noting it was well established that Biden spent a lot of time in the sun during his youth.

#6  I had something similar carved off my chest about a year ago because it was making me nervous. The biopsy was negative. The nurse let me know that it was not too dangerous even if it came back positive. She said that the only skin cancer that she sees that gets a little dicey is when some farmer comes in with something on his back that “momma has been doctoring” for several years. Then things can get a little Total Recall.

it also noted a decrease in the prices of tomatoes (67.93 percent), chili powder (7.42 percent) and electricity charges for Q1 (6.64 percent).

The upward trend of inflation continues as Islamabad was taking measures to get the $1.1 billion IMF tranche under the Extended Fund Facility.

Electric Vehicle Sales Short-Circuit
[Epoch Times] American electric vehicle (EV) start-ups are dealing with falling demand, as buyers look elsewhere, or put off purchases entirely. High costs, quality-control issues, and supply-chain problems are taking a toll on the EV sector, according to the latest quarterly reports.

For example, Rivian Automotive reported mixed quarterly results after a second recall in less than six months, reported Fox Business. Over 12,000 electric trucks and SUVs were recalled, or almost 89 percent of all of those produced through September, after a faulty sensor in the front passenger seat was discovered, according to The Wall Street Journal. The company previously saw a net loss of $1.72 billion for the fourth quarter of 2022, compared to the $2.46 billion loss during the same period in 2021.

Rivian’s goal of producing 50,000 vehicles in 2023 fell below previous estimates, as production was hit with supply-chain issues and temporary factory shutdowns to improve production levels at its Illinois plant.

The EV company lost $6.75 billion on $1.66 billion in revenue, for all of 2022, forcing executives to cut spending after two rounds of layoffs and delays in a number of products, reported Fox Business.

The new start-ups took a hit last year when the Biden administration imposed domestic manufacturing requirements and price caps for EV part makers in exchange for receiving federal tax credits to build their vehicles.
I bet GM made out OK on that deal.
It was hoped that federally funded incentives of up to $7,500 per EV made in America would cause demand in the sector to jump, but restrictions on foreign-made parts have put a damper on sales.

Unfortunately, most Rivian customers do not qualify for the EV tax credits.

#1  The shake out will continue and most companies will fail. That will leave orphan products and customers with unfixable vehicles.

What remains will be niche manufacturers with boutique products. Even Tesla.
