US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is glad to be home after being discharged Wednesday from a Baltimore hospital, the court said.
Ginsburg, 87, spent one night at the Johns Hopkins Hospital to receive nonsurgical treatment for an infection caused by a gallstone. She participated in court arguments by telephone from her hospital room Wednesday.
She will return to the hospital for outpatient visits over the next few weeks and will eventually have the gallstone removed, the court said. The procedure does not involve surgery.
The court’s oldest justice has been in the hospital twice since November because of infections. She also received outpatient radiation treatment in New York in August for a tumor on her pancreas.

[WANDTV] All Illinois shoppers out and about during the pandemic are asked to tip their masks in order to avoid confusion and anxiety between the public and business owners.
The "Tip Your Mask" initiative is a coordinated effort involving multiple Illinois police departments. With store owners concerned about people hiding their faces and potential crimes being committed, people are asked to slightly lower their mask and briefly show their faces when they enter a store to let employees know they are simply there to shop.
People are asked to wash their hands and sanitize as soon as they can after tipping their masks.
Gov. JB Pritzker is mandating Illinoisans wear face masks in public beginning May 1. The CDC currently recommends people do this.
Reverend Wonder Harris, founder of the Village of A Thousand Elders, told NBC affiliate KWQC business owners in East Moline told him it would ease their minds if people would tip their masks and show they were just in the store to buy things.
"If people were to commit a crime, they wouldn't tip the mask because they'd be caught on camera," Harris said.
In comments to KWQC, Pastor Darryl Thompson said he and other minorities might feel concerns about racial bias and could be hesitant to wear a face mask in public. He told his son to only wear a mask once he's inside of a business due to fears of what other people might think about a black man wearing a mask.

At least 4,813 people have died from COVID-19 in the state’s nursing homes since March 1, according to a tally released by Gov. Andrew Sonny Cuomo’s administration late Monday that, for the first time, includes people believed to have been killed by the coronavirus before their diagnoses could be confirmed by a lab test.
Exactly how many nursing home residents have died remains uncertain despite the state’s latest disclosure, as the list doesn’t nursing home residents who were transferred to hospitals before dying.
The revised list shows that 22 nursing homes, largely in New York City and Long Island, have reported at least 40 deaths.
Parker Jewish Institute in Queens and Isabella Geriatric Center — one of New York City’s largest nursing homes with 705 beds — have reported the highest number of deaths: 71 and 64, respectively.
Audrey Waters, a spokeswoman for Isabella Geriatric Center, said in an email last week, "Isabella, like all other nursing homes in New York City, initially had limited access to widespread and consistent in-house testing to quickly diagnose our residents and staff. This hampered our ability to identify those who were infected and asymptomatic, despite our efforts to swiftly separate anyone who presented symptoms."
In many cases, the state’s new figures reveal many more deaths than previously reported at nursing homes: Isabella Geriatric Center had 13 COVID-19 deaths reported as of May 1, and now reports the deaths of 21 patients who were confirmed to have COVID-19 along with 43 deaths of residents presumed to have COVID-19. And Ozanam Hall of Queens now is reporting a total of 53 deaths, up from just 10.
Several veterans homes have been especially hard-hit by the virus: The Long Island State Veterans Home has reported 53 deaths; including 48 confirmed and five presumed COVID-19 deaths. The New York State Veterans Home at St. Albans in Queens has reported 33 deaths while New York State Veterans Home at Montrose in Westchester says 22 residents have died.
Cuomo promised on March 2, when only a handful of coronavirus cases had been reported in New York, to make a "special effort" for nursing homes and congregate homes housing senior citizens. The state directed nursing homes to screen visitors and consider modifying visiting hours on March 6, and later suspended visits to nursing homes statewide March 12.
But the governor is facing criticism over his administration’s role in overseeing and supporting New York’s overwhelmed, state-regulated nursing homes as many have struggled to treat COVID-19 patients, amass enough personal protective gear or ensure adequate staffing.

"If hotels are making a distinction among people classifying housed and unhoused differently in terms of accommodations that they’re going to be repaid for, that the city and county will pay for with reimbursements, then I think there’s a potential civil rights violation," Councilman Mike Bonin said. "If the problems are on the hotel end, the public should know why, and then we should consider commandeering as they’ve talked about in other cities."

The council also plans to investigate if hotels refusing to house homeless have received tax breaks from the city recently.
The motion, co-authored by Bonin, says, some hotels have been "unwilling to participate, reneged on initial interest, citing security concerns, liability issues, objections from corporate management or fear of lost revenue from being branded a 'homeless hotel,'" according to KABC.
"It would seem to me to be a complete justification that we expect something back especially during an emergency," Councilman Mitch O’Farrel said of hotels that have received tax breaks.
The Ritz Carlton in downtown Los Angeles, which has luxury condo residences, was among those resisting.
The hotel has received millions of dollars in tax breaks from the city over the years, according to FOX 11.
The condo residence’s homeowner’s association cited security, health and property value concerns in a letter to homeowners saying they would resist housing the homeless.
Art Avaness, broker and owner of RE/MAX DTLA who manages six units in the building, told FOX 11 they were "shocked and offended" the hotel might be forced to participate.

"In theory, it’s a great idea, I support the program but in practice specifically for this property, it just isn’t, because you want to house hundreds of homeless people in a structure that’s literally in the same building with 224 homeowners?" he told FOX 11. Avaness told KABC the average price for a one-bedroom unit is around $1 million. "Minimum one million and goes all the way up to $40, $42 million," he said.

Chris, I think that argument could be made; forced quartering of state agents. In fact, 'during wartime' would be a subgroup of 'during emergency'.
To create the illusion of private property rights, many question must still be asked: accordingly what is the substitute for fair trade lodging fees? Who does the maintenance if residents are not allowed outside? What is the compensation if/when residents are released to de-con the structure and/or replaces fabrics? Food? What about damages due to the various forms of cabin fever, cuz if they can't keep drugs out of prisons this is an impossibility? Who is liable for the eventual theft, rape, medical emergency, or fire? What happens when a group decides they have had enough and decide to leave - lock the doors, armed guards?
No way should they sign onto this and expose themselves legally to any and all misdeeds with a poor-faith business partner with the full power and protection of law on their side. Say one of these places burns down, hundreds dead included those who actually paid to stay. Lawsuit. State: oh, well your residence wasn't up to fire code. It was a campfire! Ah, so you admit your rooms were not properly constructed for any residents. This building wasn't designed for homeless people! Ah, discriminatory and negligent, and racist. Tsk, tsk.
Place is going to be ruined, you on the hook, no make them take it, maybe have your day in court but avoid the hanging.

The chickens are coming home to roost. All this time Garcetti and his ilk thought it was OK to let these people sleep, pee and poop on the streets instead of incarcerating them in tent cities or barracks out in the boondocks like any responsible government would do to vagrants and the mentally ill. Well, it was OK until it wasn't. If I had to stay in a Los Angeles hotel, which I hope I never do, I'll be sure to look for the ones that the LA City Council identifies as being "unwilling to participate" in this cockeyed scheme of theirs.

[Forbes] - Sweden’s coronavirus death toll now stands at 2,854. As the total accelerates ever higher than its Nordic neighbors, the Swedish Public Health Agency (FHM) is now looking at why the infection has hit the country’s elderly care homes so hard.
The Swedish capital Stockholm has been the epicenter of the outbreak in Sweden so far, accounting for almost half of all deaths recorded. According to data released last week, 630 of the 1,406 coronavirus deaths in Stockholm were people in elderly care homes. Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported that at least 541 care homes across Sweden have had at least one case of the coronavirus. If there is one, there is more.
