Home invader drives self to hospital following homeowner kinetic ventilation
[Breitbart] A registered sex offender was shot twice Friday morning after allegedly invading a home in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Fox 8 reported that the registered offender, 38-year-old Tyrell L. Johnson, allegedly entered the home through a back door around 6:30 am. Police indicated that there was a confrontation between Johnson and the homeowner, with the homeowner eventually shooting Johnson twice.

According to CBS 17, Johnson fled the scene before police arrived, driving himself to the hospital. His condition was not reported.

Johnson "registered as a sex offender after a 2008 conviction to second-degree sex offense in Pasquotank County."

WITN reported that Johnson also has a manslaughter conviction.

Two suspects in Baltimore bartender's death will stand trial, while third takes deal
[WBALTV] BALTIMORE —Two suspects in connection with the murder of a Baltimore bartender are going to trial, as the third suspect takes a deal.
There are six million stories in the Naked City. This isn't one. This is in Baldymore.
Tivontre Mouzon, 21, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit robbery with the use of a deadly weapon. After he testifies in trial, Mouzon is expected to receive a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, with the suspension of all but eight years.
Mouzon is a small town in France. Tivontre is a few meaningless sounds.
Tonya Hayes, the mother of Mouzon, rejected a plea offer of 20 years, with the suspension of all but 15 years. Marquese Winston, the boyfriend of Hayes, also rejected an offer to plead guilty to first-degree murder. He would've had all but 70 years suspended.
With all but 70 years suspended, I think I'd go for the jury trial too.

Man who tied concrete to wife, threw her off bridge gets life in prison
[NYPOST] A Texas man who admitted to killing his estranged wife by tying a massive chunk of concrete to her and throwing her off a bridge into a lake has been sentenced to life in prison.
Good idea. A divorce can cost up to $300 in Texas. Better to just tie a 120 pound rock around her neck and throw her off a bridge.
Prosecutors in Fort Worth say Rodolfo "Rudy" Arellano pleaded guilty Wednesday to capital murder. He’ll serve life behind bars without chance of parole.
Maybe he should have double-checked the cost effectiveness of that move.
Just think what he is going to save on rent and utilities, not to mention food.
The 36-year-old man could have faced the death penalty
if convicted at trial.

The body of 28-year-old Elizabeth Arellano was discovered in April 2016 in Lake Worth after police say fishermen reported hearing screams and seeing someone fall from the bridge.

When her body was discovered, a rope was tied around her neck attached to a 119-pound (54-kilogram) hunk of concrete. Rodolfo Arellano was nabbed
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!

Clive Swift aka 'Richard Bucket' - Keeping Up Appearances star gone at 82
[BBC] Actor Clive Swift, known to millions as Hyacinth Bucket's hen-pecked husband Richard in BBC One's 90s sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died aged 82.

Swift, who spent 10 years at the RSC before breaking into television, also acted in such series as Peak Practice, Born and Bred and The Old Guys.

He spent six years playing Richard opposite Dame Patricia Routledge.

The role saw him patiently tolerate her ham-fisted and invariably thwarted attempts at social climbing.

Dame Patricia said she was "deeply saddened" to hear of her former co-star's death.

"Clive was a skilful and inventive actor with wide experience, as his successful career proved," she said.

"I so much admire what he brought to the barely sketched role of Hyacinth's husband and treasure the memories of our happy collaboration."

Off-screen he co-founded The Actors Centre, a meeting place for members of his profession in central London.

Tragic Unassisted Human Flight Failure - T.S.A. Agent, Orlando Airport
[NYT] A terminal at Orlando International Airport was evacuated and incoming flights were grounded on Saturday morning after a Transportation Security Administration officer jumped to his death, the police and witnesses said.

The officer, described by the Orlando police as a man in his 40s, had just clocked out of work before jumping from a balcony of the Hyatt Regency in the airport atrium about 9:30 a.m.

Jenny L. Burke, a spokeswoman for the agency, confirmed that an off-duty T.S.A. employee had fallen from a balcony inside the airport and died. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer’s family, friends and everyone in our T.S.A. family," she said.

The police said on Twitter that "preliminary information suggests an apparent suicide."

The sound of the man crashing to the floor caused passengers to flee unscreened into a restricted area, Ms. Burke said. Crowds of passengers were being rescreened on Saturday afternoon. Officials said flight operations were starting to return to normal about 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Federal Aviation Administration issued a halt to inbound flights that was lifted at 11:30 a.m.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
The Female Spy Who Parachuted Into the Alps to Battle Nazis
[Daily Beast] The year is 1942, and World War II is raging. Odette Sansom decides to follow in her war hero father’s footsteps by becoming an SOE agent to aid Britain and her beloved homeland, France. Five failed attempts and one plane crash later, she finally lands in occupied France to begin her mission. It is here that she meets her commanding officer, Captain Peter Churchill.

As they successfully complete mission after mission, Peter and Odette fall in love. All the while, they are being hunted by the cunning German secret police sergeant, Hugo Bleicher, who finally succeeds in capturing them. They are sent to Paris’s Fresnes prison, and from there to concentration camps in Germany where they are starved, beaten, and tortured. But in the face of despair, they never give up hope, their love for each other, or the whereabouts of their colleagues. Larry Loftis recounts this fascinating story of resistance and romance in Code Name Lise: The True Story of the Woman Who Became WWII’s Most Highly Decorated Spy, from which the following is excerpted:

LONDON
The morning of April 15 Col. Maurice Buckmaster [director of the Special Operations Executive] called Peter into his office. Arnaud had sent coordinates of the drop zone, he said. They retrieved a Michelin map and Peter paused when he saw where he would be landing: atop a mountain of more than 5,500 feet.

"Struth!" He rubbed a hand over his face. "They certainly took you at your word when you said I’d land anywhere."

A parachute drop was simpler than being tossed in a canoe 800 yards off the coast of Cannes, but this was different. His submarine insertion into France on New Year’s Day was controllable; if he capsized, he could always swim. Throwing yourself out of a plane at 200 miles an hour into sheer darkness to hit the head of a pin‐that was a mild form of suicide.

Buckmaster laughed, looking again at the summit. "An Alp all to yourself."

Man catches fire after being tased outside restaurant
Wonder what his BAC % was? Video at link
[NY Post] This is the shocking moment a man caught fire after he was tased outside a restaurant in Philadelphia.

Witness Pat Tackney, who filmed the incident, said he saw the man being confronted outside of Jim's Steaks in the south of the US city.

Pat claims the man refused to leave the restaurant and was forcibly removed.

The video shows two men, thought to be security guards from the restaurant, use a stun gun on the unnamed man before his leg catches fire.

Pat wrote on Twitter: "So I witnessed a man catch fire after being tased last night..."

Good Samaritan Chicago real estate broker books hotel rooms for 100 homeless people
[The Hill] More than 100 homeless people in Chicago were given a warm place to stay with fresh clothes and food as temperatures dived below zero thanks to Candice Payne, a 34-year-old real estate broker from the Windy City.

Payne came into national prominence earlier this week after she not only used her credit card to book 30 hotel rooms for homeless people amid record low temperatures in Chicago, but also organized a caravan of trucks and cars to provide them transportation and made them care packages.

Payne told The New York Times in an interview on Saturday that she made the decision to help in a "spur-of-the-moment."

"It was 50 below, and I knew they were going to be sleeping on ice and I had to do something," she continued.

According to The Times, Payne paid $70 per room for all 30 rooms when she made the booking at the local Amber Inn on Wednesday night. At the time, temperatures in Chicago reportedly reached a low of 25 degrees.

Caribbean-Latin America
American anarchist 'John Galton' shot dead in Acapulco
Cute nym
[Wash Times] An American anarchist who went by the name John Galton was shot dead at his home in the Mexican resort of Acapulco, sending shivers through a tightknit anti-establishment community of expatriates that organizes events in the violence-torn retreat with seminars on topics such as how to make money via cryptocurrencies.
Very tightknit. All 3 of them
A woman describing herself as John's partner, Lily, said via social media that she saw the gunmen go straight for John and his friend Jason Henza, 43. Henza made it to a private hospital with bullet wounds in an armpit, leg and hand. The hospital said he checked out that same day. Mexican police found equipment to process drugs, glass pipes and marijuana plants at the home.
Oops
Lily and Henza both posted videos to Facebook immediately after the shooting. Lily screamed: "I really need help! Somebody please come." In his post, a bearded Henza said in a blood-smattered T-Shirt: "We were attacked. I've been shot three times. I'm not doing so good."

Prior to the shooting, John and Lily hosted weekly "Meat Ups" at a local restaurant where self-professed carnivores dined only on meat. They were also busy recruiting speakers for an anarchist conference set to take place in Acapulco later in February. The dreadlocked couple, both in their 20s, posted a video to Facebook two months ago calling for attendees at the conference.

"We want freedom of ideas," John said from the patio of a house that the couple rented for $400 a month high above the bay of Acapulco. Waves lapped gently far below and roosters crowed as he spoke.
3 Times?
Lily did not respond to request for comment via social media on Saturday. Henza declined to comment. A U.S. Department of State official said the Bureau of Consular Affairs was aware of an investigation into the death of a U.S. citizen in Acapulco, but that it couldn't provide additional information due to privacy considerations
and general apathy

Economy
Vice Media is laying off 10 percent of its workforce
[NYPOST] The ax is swinging at Vice Media.

The Brooklyn-based gonzo news outfit said it will slash 10 percent of its workforce, or about 250 jobs ‐ the latest in a wave of layoffs that have hit a new generation of media companies including BuzzFeed and HuffPost.

The fresh carnage at Vice was announced Friday by Chief Executive Nancy Dubuc, a former A+E chief who was brought in last March amid reports of a frat-house culture at the company under its co-founder and larger-than-life ex-CEO Shane Smith.

Smith ‐ under pressure last spring over a slew of complaints about sexual misconduct at the millennial news outlet ‐ relinquished the reins so that Dubuc could come in and clean up Vice’s culture and lavish spending in order to bring it to profitability.

All Vice departments are expected to have layoffs, as the company eyes redundancies overseas and focuses on growth businesses, including producing commercial spots on TV and the web for corporate clients.

"Having finalized the 2019 budget, our focus shifts to executing our goals and hitting our marks," Dubuc wrote in a memo sent to staff on Friday morning. "We will make Vice the best manifestation of itself and cement its place long into the future."

Vice will no longer divvy up its business country by country, instead organizing it according to larger regions and business lines.

The bloodbath isn’t surprising. Under Smith, Vice had expanded internationally at a fast clip with offices in far-flung destinations like Serbia, Australia, Austria, Denmark, Mexico, Romania and the UK.

At one time, Vice had been seen as the hottest media company in the US with a $5.7 billion valuation. But in 2017, Vice missed its revenue target of $805 million by more than $100 million and the company is still not profitable. Dubuc said last fall that she expects Vice to be profitable "within the fiscal year" thanks to her cost-cutting efforts.

Changes at Vice come amid a reckoning at online media publishers that in recent years have been pumped with billions of venture capital and traditional media dollars.

This week, BuzzFeed laid off 15 percent of its staff, or around 250 jobs. Separately, Verizon slashed 800 jobs at its media unit that owns AOL, Yahoo and HuffPost.

US Manufacturing Unexpectedly Surges in January
[Breitbart] Economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded by more than expected in January.

The Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing index came in at 56.6 for January, easily surpassing economist expectations for 54 score.

This measure of economic activity, which is based on a monthly survey of purchasing managers at roughly 300 manufacturing firms nationwide, had weakened considerably to 54.1 in December and was expected to continue weakening. The unexpected turnaround is another signal that the economy has strengthened recently, defying predictions that it would slow.

The New Orders Index, which had come in very weak in December, registered 58.2 percent, an increase of 6.9 percentage points. The Production Index registered 60.5 percent, 6.4-percentage point increase.

The Prices Index registered 49.6 percent, a 5.3-percentage point decrease from the December reading of 54.9 percent, indicating a drop in prices of raw materials. Critics of tariffs have long been predicting that trade disputes would put upward pressure on the prices of materials used in manufacturing. Instead, raw materials in January saw the first monthly drop in materials prices in three years.

The Employment Index weakened to 55.5 percent, a decrease of 0.5 percentage point from the December reading of 56 percent.

French 'yellow vests' march through Paris denouncing police violence
[AlAhram] Several thousand "yellow vest" protesters marched through Gay Paree and other French cities on Saturday on the 12th weekend of action against the government, despite opinion polls pointing to a recovery in President Emmanuel Macron's popularity.

The protests - named after the fluorescent jackets French motorists are required to carry in their cars - began in mid-November over plans to raise fuel taxes before developing into a broader revolt against the government that mobilised tens of thousands of demonstrators nationwide each Saturday.

The government warned on Friday police would not hesitate to use flashballs in case of violence by demonstrators after it was authorised by La Belle France's highest administrative court.

Protesters in Gay Paree on Saturday paid homage to those injured in the past months, denouncing the use of flashball riot control guns banned in much of Europe.

Between 10,000 and 13,800 protested in the capital according to police and independent media estimates. Riot police used tear gas to disperse some protesters who set bins and a scooter alight, although the situation remained relatively calm compared to previous weekends. Thousands also erupted into the streets in cities, including Tours, Valence, Marseille and Bordeaux.

About 1,000 coppers have been injured along with 1,700 demonstrators since the start of the protests, according to official figures.

"It's true that this intermediate weapon can hurt, but faced with rioters, the police need it to defend themselves against those who attack them," said Interior Minister Christophe Castaner.

Opinion polls show a recovery in Macron's battered popularity rating after he launched consultations, including townhall debates, to try to quell social unrest.

A Harris Interactive poll of 1,000 people on Friday showed Macron gaining 4 percentage points since December taking him to a 35 percent approval rating.

As in previous weeks, protesters on Saturday carried French flags and held signs attacking Macron as out of touch or calling for referendums tabled by citizens.

Protesters injured in previous weeks of violence were put at the front of the protests with some wearing eye patches with a target sign on them.

The Interior Ministry said 80,000 security officials had been mobilised, including 5,000 in Gay Paree.

Jeb Bush Praises Donald Trump's Boost for H-1B Outsourcing Program
[Breitbart] The GOP establishment’s champion in the 2016 primaries, Jeb Bush, is praising President Donald Trump’s upgrade to the H-1B outsourcing program.

"New H-1B rules would result in up to 5,340 more immigrants with a master’s degree or higher getting selected for a visa," Jeb Bush tweeted February 1. "A good change in policy."

Bush’s endorsement is a problem for Trump, who ran against Bush’s pro-Wall Street policies.

In the 2016 campaign, Bush promised to jump-start economic growth for investors by accelerating the inflow of foreign consumers and workers. In contrast, Trump promised to help voters by reforming the immigration system and visa worker programs. On his Inauguration Day, Trump announced his policy of "Hire American."

The "Hire American" policy has successfully pushed down the arrival of migrants and refugees and is forcing employers to hire and pay Americans at higher rates than ever before. In 2018, for example, wages rose by 3 percent, putting Trump on track to raise wages by a huge 10 percent during his first term. The policy is also helping his electoral base ‐ wages for several categories of blue-collar workers rose quickly while wages in the critical Minneapolis region rose by 5.2 percent.

But Trump’s "Hire American" policy has not helped the many professional, college-educated Americans who are losing jobs and careers to a flood of government-subsidized visa workers imported from Indian and Chinese colleges. In November 2018, many of GOP-leaning American college voters backed Democratic candidates instead of Trump’s GOP allies.

#1  Sorry Trump fans, this is a grade A High-Level F-up by President Trump.

Trump, you're DEAD WRONG expanding H-1B. All it does is allow businesses to hire indentured servants and force wages lower. Look what it did to software engineers.

#2  I have to agree with #1. At a minimum Trump should have said "We can take a look at that after you all wise up and fund the border wall. Not one moment sooner..."

#4  In India, a LOT of Masters degrees are bought. It's quite the racket. Trump F'd up big time, he needs to stop listening to his daughter and SiL.

#5  Having his grown children involved in politics was a bad decision from the start. This may be why he s no longer enjoy the wisdom of General's Mattis and Kelly on his staff. Just my opinion and a wild guess.

Iran unveils long-range cruise missile on revolution anniversary
DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran displayed a new cruise missile with a range of 1,300 km (800 miles) on Saturday during celebrations marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, state television reported.

Iran has expanded its missile program, particularly its ballistic missiles, in defiance of opposition from the United States and expressions of concern by European countries. Tehran says the program is purely defensive.

Later on Saturday, a senior Revolutionary Guard commander suggested that pressure by European countries for talks on curbing Iran’s ballistic missiles development could prompt Tehran to expand it beyond current limits.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Defense Minister Amir Hatami said: "This cruise missile needs a very short time for its preparedness and can fly at a low altitude."
