-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Superstorm to Hit North America
Superstorm Nuri, the powerful remains of a typhoon that surpass the intensity of 2012's Superstorm Sandy, is bearing down on Alaska's western Aleutian Islands and could bring unseasonably frigid temperatures to much of the U.S. next week.

The Associated Press reported the National Weather Service as saying what remains of Typhoon Nuri is moving off the Japanese coast and is mixing with cold air and the jet stream, which will give it the power to produce hurricane-force winds and waves 50 feet high. It could arrive late Friday or Saturday before weakening in the Bering Sea.

The storm potentially could be one of the most intensive to ever hit the North Pacific, weather service forecaster Brian Hurley said. The Coast Guard and Alaska state emergency responders were keeping a close eye on its strength.

The system is expected to push cold air into much of the lower 48 states next week, forecaster Bob Oravec said. By the weekend, high temperatures in Minneapolis will only reach the upper 20s, and mid-30s are expected in Chicago — more than 15 degrees below normal.

Snow also is coming to areas including the northern Rockies and northern Plains.

"It looks like winter's starting early," Oravec said.

-Land of the Free
This Week in Guns: November 8th, 2014

By Chris Covert

Rantburg.com

Washington state voters staggered to the polls last Tuesday in a marijuana induced fog and voted most of their gun rights away. You can thank rich leftists for pouring money into the campaign.

The best part of the new law: no transfers whether for sale or not are allowed, and under the new law both transferer and tranferree can be charged with a Class B felony for violating this latest infringement of the right to keep and bear arms.

Far out!

Mike Vanderboegh of Sipsey Street Irregulars has said that the governor's race in Connecticut will determine whether the chief executives in that state decides to go after those who have defied the registration scheme established. Well, gun rights have lost, and sometime, perhaps as early as this spring, Connecticut governor Mike Malloy will begin armed raids on gun owners who failed to register their firearms.

I don't expect much from gun owners, as risk adverse as gun owners are.

In reference to the coming armed raids against citizens with private property the left wants: practice makes perfect.

Housekeeping: According to the Pennsylvania press, about Eric Frein, whose mug appeared with a large gash over his nose after capture: the cops say that's how they found him. I know I believe that.

Loads.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Prices for pistol and rifle ammunition were mostly steady.

Prices for used rifles were lower across the board while prices for used pistols were mixed.

As an aside, prices for used pistols of all classes in all markets appear to be poised to jump by about between 50 and 100 percent. Dunno why, but that is the current trend. I'd credit the recent election, except that was a swing to the right. We will see over the next month how that holds.

#1  Thanks for the round-up, bad.

That's a nasty little law. Not only can you not let anyone else, including spouse, have the weapon, but to take the weapon in to get serviced requires a background check. Leaving a weapon in your vehicle and somebody being in your vehicle without you is a violation.

What happens if I'm driving to work and get killed in an accident, is suddenly everyone at home in violation of some very serious charges?

DR Congo's M23 Rebels Warn of New Conflict Risk
[An Nahar] The leader of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
's defeated M23 rebels has warned of the possibility of renewed conflict, signaling mounting frustrations among the group's confined-to-camp fighters.

The rebels' 18-month war, during in which they briefly seized the key town of Goma, capital of mineral rich North Kivu province, was brought to an end a year ago by government troops and U.N. peacekeepers, with fighters fleeing into neighboring Uganda and Rwanda.

[Dhaka Tribune] A 15-year-old hearing-impaired girl was allegedly gang raped by three Union Gay Pareehad members in Tangail in the Dashakia Union Gay Pareehad (UP) office premises on October 25.

The victim's mother lodged a case with Kalihati cop shoppe on Thursday night accusing three UP members of gang raping the girl who is from the Dashakia Union in Tangail's Kalihati upazila.

The accused are Md Sahidul Islam, 38, Kurban Ali, 50, and Shahjahan Sarkar, 40, all Dashakia UP members.

Ukraine Truce Vanishes as Government Says 200 Rebels Dead
This story may be bogus. The Ukrainian ATO press center said as many as 200 militants killed.
[BUSINESSWEEK] Ukraine's military said it killed as many as 200 rebels near the eastern city of Donetsk, inflicting the biggest blow by either side in the conflict in more than two months and removing the pretense of a Sept. 5 truce.

Accusing Russia of sending dozens of tanks and other military vehicles across its border yesterday into separatist-held areas, military front man Andriy Lysenko said Ukraine's army was preparing "an adequate reaction." Lysenko said Ukrainian forces used artillery strikes to kill the rebels and destroy tanks and armored vehicles after they came under fire at Donetsk airport after almost daily attacks.

Economy
At $188, is this America's cheapest house?
[USATODAY] Flint, Mich., was one of the hardest hit cities before and during the recession. Once one of the state's largest cities, and a prosperous one when auto production plants were there, it came under the control of an emergency manager, appointed by the governor, during two periods, long before bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit
... ruled by Democrats since 1962. A city whose Golden Age included the Purple Gang...
did. While Detroit may be the home of the $1,000 house, one home in Flint is on the market for $188.

The house does not have much to recommend it. Located at 2518 Dakota Ave., it only covers 1,225 square feet, which accommodates three bedrooms and a single bath. It sits on a lot of just 5,663 square feet. The house was built in 1928, before the Great Depression.

The listing of the house on Realtor.com says it is a:

"Fixer Upper Home, Needs lots of work, has major fire damage, seller selling AS IS"

If Flint's government could afford it, the house might be a candidate to be bulldozed into the ground to make way for a flat field that might be used for a garden, or for nothing at all. The house sits in a neighborhood with similar homes, just off Michigan's Route 59 and not far from I-475, as if anyone might drive there.

Flint's population peaked at over 196,000 in 1960, according to the Census, and fell under 99,000 last year. The median household income in Flint is just above $27,000, compared to the national average of just over $51,000.

The economy is so badly broken that the local Flint newspaper, the Flint Journal, is only published three times a week.

Most cities battered by the recession and the collapse of the car industry have some chance of coming back. Not so for Flint. According to a Detroit Free Press evaluation of Flint:

Thirty years ago, it was the home of 14,000 workers, a sprawling complex of factories that churned out millions of auto parts a day for General Motors Corp.

By 2005, the city had almost been destroyed as more and more manufacturing moved away. The number of auto workers has fallen close to zero.

Is a house for sale for $188 even imaginable to most Americans? It might be when one around the corner is on the market for $210.

#2  With 5% down and 30 year mortgage the payment is about equal to the stamp on the envelope. But add in taxes and security measures then the cost skyrockets.

#3  Oh, a garden, huh. Yeah, gardens still spring up from the ground, no work at all.

Sounds like a great neighborhood. I'd have one rifleman for every 3-4 gardeners, increasing as produce comes into fruition. When produce becomes harvestable, overnights in the pill boxes will be necessary, with noise traps and flares if available.

This is just for the ferel dogs and hogs.

It can take generations for good farmland, gotta get all those clumps of glass and concrete and trash out of the soil so a plow can work easily, and the security to not get jumped or hunted when bent over pulling stuff out of the ground.

Gardens.

Probably not. I'd bet neither house has a scrap of copper inside, plumbing or wire. I've been to Flint with a brother-in-law who was working to set up community gardens. A lot of abandoned, boarded-up homes, often with a scrawled sign saying No Copper to reduce further scavenger damage.

There is already quite a bit of empty space, but as mentioned it needs major work since some of it has been vacant for years. Just cutting through years of grass and weeds to get at the dirt takes a tractor.

#8  $188 is still too expensive in some neighborhoods when this sort of thing can happen:
Detroit – — A likely gas explosion Friday on the city's southwest side damaged at least eight homes and sparked a blaze that spread to seven others, destroying them, officials said.

Joseph Slate said he was sitting on the porch of his home not far from the scene near Oakdale and Vernor Highway about 4 p.m. Friday when he heard a blast.

"I was dizzy, stunned," said Slate, who saw a man emerge from the rubble of the house, which was abandoned, and leave. He believes the man was scrapping.

"He got away," Slate said. "(The fire) caught all the houses up. ... That's putting children and people at risk. All for a $10 pipe?"

[DAWN] Justice Athar Minallah of Islamabad High Court(IHC) on Friday issued contempt notices to four petitioners for not depositing Rs4 million fine with the Pakistain Cricket Board (PCB).

The petitioners were fined for filing frivolous petition against the PCB constitution.

Justice Minallah had dismissed the petition on September 5 and imposed Rs1 million fine on each petitioner while declaring it frivolous litigation.

The four petitioners included retired major Ahmed Nadeem Sadal (Islamabad), Amir Nawab (Abbottabad

Six-year-old Hazara girl murdered in Quetta after attempted rape
[DAWN] Police in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
are investigating after a six-year-old girl was strangled and dumped near a garbage heap after apparently being subjected to rape attempts.

The girl who was from the minority Hazara ethnic group, was found on Wednesday last week in Quetta, the capital of the restive southwestern province of Balochistan.

Hazaras are mostly Shia Moslems and have borne the brunt of the wave of sectarian violence that has swept Balochistan in recent years, mostly perpetrated by Sunni Moslem murderous Moslem groups.

Quetta city police chief Abdur Razzak Cheema said the victim, who was the daughter of a gardener working at an army facility, was found near a dump close to her home. She had been strangled with a rope, he said.

"There were a lot of bruises on the girl's body that show that attempts were made to rape her," he added.

The victim's distraught parents were at a loss to understand the crime.

"We have no enmity with any one," the girl's mother told AFP.

"On the day it happened, our daughter went to throw out rubbish close to the house but did not come back, I went out in search of her, but could not find her."

A neighbour told Bibi her daughter was at the dump.

"She was already dead, with blood from her mouth and nose while her whole body bore bruises," Bibi bemoaned.

The girl's father, demanded the "beast" who killed his daughter be brought to justice.

"When I came back from work, people told me that she had been taken to Combined Military Hospital," said the girl's father who had shifted his residence to Quetta's Zarghoon Road four months ago. "I went straight to the hospital and doctors told me that she had been killed," he cried.

"I had no enmity with anyone and nor do I doubt anyone," said the girl's father. "Allah will give justice and I pray for the immediate arrest of the murderer."

Panic prevailed in the residential colony in the aftermath of the girl's brutal murder as parents have forbidden their kids from going outside their houses. "You cannot see kids outside their homes now," the girl's father said.

No leads in finding culprit
Police have not detained any suspect in connection with the murder of Saher Batool even though a week has gone by since the crime took place.

"We have been clueless in terms of tracking down the culprits," Capital City Police Officer Quetta Razzaq Cheema told Dawn on Friday.

Cheema said an investigation team comprising officers from CIA and the police force has been formed to probe into the cold-blooded murder.

Police dispelled the impression about any sectarian link to the murder of Saher. "People can write anything on social media, our job is to apprehend the culprit," Cheema said.

The girl's father also stated that he had no information about the involvement of any prayer leader in the murder of his daughter.

Olde Tyme Religion
Pope Francis: 'Pagan' Christians 'In Name Only' Are 'Enemies Of The Cross'
[BREITBART] Not all those who claim to be Christians really are, said Pope Francis Friday morning. Some are Christians "in name only," he said. "They bear the name of Christians but live a life of pagans."

In his homily at Mass, the Pope that there have always been two types of Christian, those who truly followed Christ and those who only pretended to. At the time of Saint Paul, there were "worldly Christians, Christians in name only, with two or three Christian features, but nothing more." The Pope called this sort of people "Pagan Christians," whom St. Paul called "enemies of the cross of Christ."

In Paul's time, the Pope said, the two groups of Christians "were in church together, went to Mass on Sunday, praised the Lord, and were called Christians." So what was the difference? He asked. The second were "enemies of the cross of Christ."

The Pope went on to say that "even today there are many! We must be careful not to slip into the way of pagan Christians." These are the ones, he said, who are "pagans painted over with two brush strokes of Christianity, so they look like Christians, but are really pagans."

According to Francis, we all run the risk of becoming "Christians in appearance." We are tempted, he said, to mediocrity, and when Christians become mediocre, "it is their ruin, because the heart cools and they become lukewarm." Francis reminded his hearers that Jesus used strong language to describe this sort of Christians: "Because you are lukewarm, I will vomit you out of my mouth." These, the Pope said, "are enemies of the cross of Christ. They take the name of Christian, but do not follow the requirements of the Christian life."

#3  If you're old enough, you can recall that commercial airlines usually suffered three or four fatal crashes a year. Among the customer services offered at airports were insurance vendors. Snapshot 1960 -

January 6 – National Airlines Flight 2511, a Douglas DC-6B bound from New York to Miami, crashes near Bolivia, North Carolina, when a bomb planted on board explodes in mid-air; all 34 people on board are killed.
January 18 – Capital Airlines Flight 20, a Vickers Viscount, en route from Washington National Airport to Norfolk International Airport crashes near Holdcroft, Virginia due to engine failure caused by icy conditions; all 50 on board are killed.
March 17 – Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 710, a Lockheed L-188 Super Electra en route from Chicago to Miami, Florida, breaks apart at 15,000 feet (4,600 m) and crashes near Tell City, Indiana, killing all 63 on board.
October 4 – Eastern Air Lines Flight 375, a Lockheed L-188 Super Electra, crashes on takeoff from Boston's Logan International Airport into Winthrop Bay, after multiple bird strikes; 62 of 72 aboard die.
October 29 – The Cal Poly football team plane crash: a chartered Curtiss C-46 crashes on takeoff at the Toledo Express Airport in Toledo, Ohio with the loss of twenty-two people including sixteen players on the California Polytechnic State University football team.
December 16 – The 1960 New York mid-air collision: United Airlines Flight 826, a Douglas DC-8, and TWA Flight 266, a Lockheed Super Constellation, collide in mid-air over Staten Island in New York; all 128 aboard the two planes and six people on the ground are killed. This is the first crash in which a flight recorder was used to provide details in a crash investigation. The accident was the deadliest U.S. commercial aviation disaster at the time.

#6  Yep P2k, that they did. They also let anyone in to the gate area to meet & greet or say good bye.

Then you could look out big windows and wave as the planes pushed back. Saw my father leave on any number of business trips in the late '50s & early '60s.
